Cate Blanchett wears Givenchy, plays with a dragon in Cannes: perfect or blah?

FFN_Cannes_TrainDragonRC_SGP_051614_51415683

I could pretty much watch Cate Blanchett interacting with a giant dragon for the rest of my life. These are pics of Cate and the cast of How To Train Your Dragon 2 on the red carpet at Cannes. Cate is the only one who really posed with the giant dragon on the red carpet. She stroked him, she leaned on him, she rubbed his chin, she gazed admiringly at him, she flirted with him. Look at these photos and tell me La Blanchett doesn’t need a giant dragon on every red carpet from here on out.

Cate wore Givenchy. I have to wonder about her loyalty to the House of Givenchy even now that Kim Kardashian is wearing Givenchy on the reg. Does Cate even know what a “Kim Kardashian” is? Or does Cate just wear whatever she wants and she doesn’t give an eff what anyone thinks? For the record, I like this… from the front. The back is not great (I loathe that illusion netting stuff). But the front part… those look like scales. Like, dragon scales. Hot.

While doing promotion in Cannes, Cate took a moment to bash the idea of women “having it all” and the journalists who perpetuate that line of questioning. Cate said, in part:

“It’s certainly a question that’s never asked of men. The question is only ever directed towards of women. ‘How do you balance? How do you have it all?’ When anyone plays a mother on film, there is a whole raft of judgment in that a mother is a particular archetype or that every mother is the same. That’s complete rubbish. We did discuss a lot about that particular issue because of course there is a judgment on how women parent. The film actually deals with it really beautifully and deeply and emotionally.”

And Ms Blanchett criticised the constant fixation with a woman’s age or beauty, at the expense of more pertinent issues.

“We live in a world where there is still not equal pay for equal work. I still don’t understand in 2014 why that is the case. I’m not just talking about the industry in which we work, it’s every industry. I’m an actress at a film festival. I can cope with the questions, I’m a big girl. But it does surprise me that we’re still asking those questions.”

Word.

Meanwhile, Cate’s costar America Ferrera was “pranked” by that douchebag Vitalii Sediuk, the Ukrainian “journalist” who runs onto red carpets and accosts (re: assaults) celebrities. He was the guy who wouldn’t let go of Bradley Cooper and he was the guy who got slapped by Will Smith. On this red carpet, Sediuk got on the ground, lifted up America’s dress and stuck his head under it. What I like about the photos is that Cate seems extremely protective of America – you can see Cate holding on tightly to America’s wrist, and it looks like Cate is comforting her.

    MOTHER OF DRAGONS!

  2. antisocial says:

    Cate is perfection, always.
Love that while Cate comforts America (double entendre, doesn’t she always!?!), the guys are looking back at Vitool Bag whayeverhisnameis like “MuthaF$@&er, come back and try again”.
Seriously though, Cate + Dragon = Awesome

    • MG says:

Yes! Djimon and Kit look super protective and pissed in that photo…which is sexy as hell!! As for Cate…perfection as always.

    • Liv says:

It seems like America didn’t even noticed that someone got under her dress until the bodyguards pulled him out – so funny. The journalist on the other hand not so much. What a rude thing to do.

  3. Tx says:

Perfection as always. Sigh. She’s just a goddess.

  4. Chinoiserie says:

I love what America is wearing even if I would not wear something with so low neckline myself.

  5. smee says:

CB is a consummate professional. When she’s at Cannes, she’s there to work. Poses well with the main prop from the movie, looks incredible at every event and keep the partying under wraps or for later and even shows compassion (like a real human!) for her co-worker.

  6. Charlotte says:

How much do I want Djimon and Cate to make babies?? Look at his arm remaining protectively around her after the incident. My god, that is a beautiful-looking man. Why isn’t he a bigger deal??

    • JennySerenity says:

I think Andrew Upton might take objection to that. 😉

    • antisocial says:

Right!?! A worthy lead role for Dijimon is a kick starter campaign I’d generously donate to. WTF Hollywood, I like beautiful, talented actors of all colors, would love to see more diversity. It is incredibly disappointing in this day and age that talent like Djimon and Lupita go unappreciated by the Hollywood powers that be.

  7. KodochiiR says:

    She’s very lovely.

  8. Suze says:

I like Cate’s dramatic take on red carpet dressing and I love her answer to the journalist. Shut up already with your motherhood judging!

The reporter is an asshole. Who looks up a woman’s skirt?

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Suze•

Very much agree with what you wrote.

Looking up skirts is something I’d expect from a boy, not a man.

    • Izzy says:

Who looks up a woman’ skirt? Creeps and perverts. The Washington Post has a great article calling out the New York Post for even referring to this little creep as a “journalist,” and in the article WashPo also flat out calls his behavior what it actually is – sexual assault.

How he still gets credentialed for entertainment events is beyond me.

      • Pinky Rose says:

It is really disgusting. I don’t know how he keeps doing that and remains fine.

      • LadySlippers says:

He’s done this more than once?!???? 😳😳😳😳😡😡😡😡😯😯😯😯

      • Jay says:

I was thinking “sexual assault” as soon as I read about it. Shouldn’t the guy be arrested? Do they even need the victim’s testimony with that many witnesses and photographic evidence?

      • Pinky Rose says:

Yeah, Lady S. Most famously to BCoop, Will Smith, JLo and Adele.

      • Sloane Wyatt says:

Arrest this creeper. Jail him. Then after he’s served his time, sentence him to cleaning out urinals for weeks and weeks of community service while wearing a placard that reads “Peeping Tom”.

    • kri says:

She is just an empress! I swear, if I was a young actress in H’wood, she would be my template. I like the dress very much, but what is special about Cate is how she elevates everything she wears. I don’t always love/like her fashion, but I always love her. And really, if someone attempted to stick his head up my dress, he would have a face full of Louboutin. Jerk.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@LadySlippers, who wrote: “He’s done this more than once?!????”

Yes, he’s the same person Will Smith slapped at a Red Carpet event. Will got a bit of ‘shade’ for hitting him, I think because many people thought he’d hit an over-zealous fan. But it was the same creep who put his head under America’s dress.

This man is obviously an attention ‘Ho’ who has a problem with boundaries. I think what he did constitutes sexual assult and he’d probably have been arrested on the spot if he’d done that to some poor lass on the street. What I do’t understand is this: If he gets into these events by flashing ‘Journalist’ credentials, why don’t they just ban his ass? Then, if he used a fake I.D. to get in and displayed similar behavior they could have him arrested.

Also … Cate is the Queen of all things cool and glamorous! I can’t wait to see ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2!” 🙂

      • aquarius64 says:

@kri – my heel would have connected with his face. Why isn’t he in jail?

  9. lisa2 says:

    I adore Cate..

The motherhood shamming happens all the time. And it comes from women a great deal of that time. I have seen actresses asked those questions by other women in interview. I have seen other women sham a women for having help; accusing the help of raising the kids because well “because”. Women are forever judging other women on how they raise their kids.. .MY children would never wear that; I would never do that; I don’t have help raising my (fill in the number) of kids; I have to do this or that an she never has to..

so the Stop the Motherhood shamming has to start with women. How do you expect men to stop doing what women themselves can’t stop doing.

    ****************

that reporter creep should never have been permitted to get that close. I have never seen a reporter on the RC at Cannes. Which is why there are no interviews on the Cannes carpet. Why he is not banned from events is crazy. Maybe this is the final straw.

  10. eliza says:

I love How to Train Your Dragon. Can’t wait to see the new one. Don’t judge!

    • Tulip Garden says:

Oh but I am judging! I am judging that you and I would get along just fine! I am looking forward to the new one too. Also I watched the first one twice!!…..no children present just me and Mr Garden.

      • LadySlippers says:

        💐Tulip Dear!!!!!!💐

How the heck are you?!? All the Ladies of the Garden miss you! Please come back soon. 😕

(And stop stealing all the booze and fertiliser — I SO know it’s you ferreting them away in the middle of the night!)

      • eliza says:

        🙂

    • Tig says:

None from me! Will prob watch the new one in 3D-lol! I love Toothless- glad Cate does too!

  11. hunaww says:

Oh my god,Jay Baruchel! I wish there were more articles about him! He voices Hiccup in this movie.

  12. Lilacflowers says:

    Cate’s ring! That is all.

  13. Eden says:

The picture of Cate with Toothless where she is kissing his cheek? That is the best picture ever. Toothless looks like he’s died and gone to heaven, which really, I can’t blame him. Love it.

  14. JH says:

She is such a badass. I love her always.

  15. Ennie says:

There were pics of Cate in a blue shiny gown where she was looking beyond fabulous. I wish you’d posted them, I think it was the best she had ever looked this year.

  16. Ramona Q. says:

I don’t know anything about French law, but in the US, America F. could press charges for that bulls**t.

  17. Lucy says:

You could say she’s the real-life Khaleesi. I mean, Jon Snow is standing pretty much next to her!!!

  18. rtms77 says:

I often wonder if the actors ever are embarrassed by doing some of the thing they have to do on the red carpet. Like pretending to adore a fake dragon or cartoon character etc.

  19. Ficeyes says:

Love Dijimon too and appreciate his looks of concern followed by we’re not having that sh!t look on his face. Sometimes a gal needs costars of the male preoccupancy to keep the jerks in their place.

  20. Pinky Rose says:

I was expecting someone wore that Givenchy and she did it more than justice. The bodice looks like dragons scales, lol.

  21. Poe says:

I don’t really care for the dress (she looks regal and better than a lot of wannabes, ahem Lively, but the dresses she has worn this week are miles better), but holy mother of god that face is too stunningly beautiful. Really, the close ups are gorgeous. And the earrings are drool inducing.

  22. Luna says:

Like someone said above, Cate elevates any dress she wears. She pulls off looks that mere mortals just don’t and looks amazing practically every time she steps out on the red carpet. She takes chances and yes, wears whatever she feels like, and I love her for that! How boring would fashion be if ladies like her always played it safe!

I think this Givenchy looks wonderful on her, and the fact that it’s a bold dress and that the bodice looks like it has dragon scales on it makes it perfect for the occasion!

BTW, she’s just been killing at Cannes! There should be a post just for her with every single outfit she’s worn since arriving! Kaiser, how about it??

  23. LAK says:

    Love Cate. That is all.

    • Tatiana says:

Yup, she is just perfect. I don’t really care about celebs (other than read what dumb things they do) but I can’t help liking her a lot. Having watch and read most of her interviews, she seems very intelligent, interesting, witty, level headed and so damn likable. Yes, she is an incredible actress and deserves every accolade out there, but from the personal point of view, I find her very nice.

  24. JJ says:

I never cared about Blanchett, never really thought she deserved all the accolades as an actress. And since the Woody Allen controversy and how she handled it during the Oscars I think she is just nasty!

    • sim says:

I will never understand people like you… never cared, but still bother to come and write all those things. What a miserable life you live.

  25. lucy2 says:

They all look lovely. Cate is a goddess, and I love her standing up against those questions they always ask women. Those questions aren’t going to stop until more actresses point this sort of thing out.

I’m glad some media outlets are calling what this guy does assault and not “pranks”. It’s disgusting and he needs to face consequences for his actions.

  26. Tatiana says:

She looks very beautiful face wise and has a great presence that you kind of forget what she is wearing.

  27. LAK says:

She looked so amazing in the green/blue sequin dress. She has such regal bearing.

  28. Jeanette says:

Still have a problem with these ppl that wouldnt stand up to Woody Allen. When I see her, I think Woody Allen. If she is so bad ass..prove it!

  29. Blackcat says:

    Love, Love, Love Cate’s dress.
