Benedict Cumberbatch wore jorts & brought a bagged lunch for a library tour

FFN_Cumberbatch_Ben_EXCL_RM_062614_51462701

I hope Benedict Cumberbatch enjoyed his time in Boston. According to People Magazine, he was already doing his “last” trips to various Boston establishments over the weekend, so he might have already left Boston. Noooo!! Won’t someone think of the poor Bostonian Cumberbitches?! Oh well… now he’s free down to the mid-Atlantic. I’ll cook for him. But I probably wouldn’t be able to cook all of the food he now seems to enjoy love from his time in Boston. People Mag says he’s all about seafood. And libraries. And JORTS.

Benedict Cumberbatch is capping off his time in Boston with lobster. The Sherlock star, who is wrapping up filming on Black Mass in Boston, stopped in at the Union Oyster House in Faneuil Hall on Saturday afternoon with his costar Joel Edgarton for a seafood feast.

“He said he was having his ‘last lobster on this trip to Boston,’” manager Jim Malinn told PEOPLE. “He said he can’t wait to come back for more.”

In the restaurant’s autograph book, Cumberbatch signed that he “loved it and never realized I was coming to the home of the toothpick,” which was popularized at the restaurant. In typical Boston style, he capped off his autograph with “Wicked.”

According to staff, the actors were very nice but kept a low profile, and ate shrimp and scallops with their lobster downstairs in the original oyster bar area.

Cumberbatch has been making the rounds while in town. Last week, he headed to the Boston Public Library, where he took a small-group tour of the art and architecture. Wearing casual knee-length jean shorts, a short-sleeved grey button-up shirt, reading glasses and a tweed Ivy cap, he toted a brown bag lunch in his hand as he learned about the historic building.

“He was listening to the two [guides] talk about the history of the building and he interjected with a few questions for them,” said a fellow library-goer.

In late June, the British actor was spotted at two popular Boston restaurants: Carmelina’s and Modern Pastry, where he had his first-ever cannoli.

[From People]

The mental image of a bespectacled Benedict bringing his own bagged lunch on a tour of the Boston Public Library? Perfection. That just hit my nerd G-spot. But my lady bits backed away from this: “Wearing casual knee-length jean shorts…” We’ve seen those before, haven’t we? He wore them during his drive on Top Gear. And they are unequivocally tragic. No man can pull off those jorts. Ever.

Seriously though… it sounds like Benedict always has a great time whenever he’s on location in America. He needs to spend more time here.

He was spotted at The Crucible in London last night, so it’s safe to say he’s already left Boston.

He seems to really enjoy learning about local history whenever he’s on location… That’s oddly adorable lol, no matter if the person is famous or not.

    • Lisa says:

I came to post the same thing. Including the “Oddly adorable” phrase as well. Wild!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I think it’s awesome that he takes the time to sight-see instead of just hiding out in his trailer when he’s not filming. I really respect that.

He seems like he’d be a fun guy to travel with, right?

    • Emma says:

I was there at the crucible, he was sat across the aisle about 3 feet away from me!!

      • Green Eyes says:

        Was he with anyone?

        Inquiring minds and all that.

      • Emma says:

He was sat next to a brunette woman who he was chatting with, but he left on his own (and held the door for me, what a gentleman!!)

      • Patris says:

        With Viki or Anna?

      • Lee says:

Hhhm are your eyes okay because according to other sources he was still in Boston that day wrapping up the film. I’m not sure which is true though.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

@Patris…..who are Viki and Anna please?

      • Raven says:

Kazlock, Anna is a Polish actress who recently told a tabloid that she and Benedict were having a romance. She claimed they met at the film festival he attended this past spring in Poland and took long romantic strolls together while getting to know one another. She also claimed that he flew out to visit her at the Cannes film festival for a half day (nearly impossible considering his schedule at the time), and that they had plans to attend the theatre in London in June (which does not seem to have happened). Her claims have only been mentioned in Polish tabloids and are widely acknowledged as bullshit. She is not a very nice woman, having been arrested for cocaine possession and doing things like grabbing guys’ crotches in red carpet pictures. If Benedict knew what girls like Anna and Katia were saying about him to the press in their home countries, he would die. (I won’t even get into the dire things Katia and her sister have said about him to Russian press).

Viki is a friend of Benedict’s. She is a curly-haired brunette of Greek heritage. She’s been photographed out with him once or twice (most recently at James Rhodes’s concert) and seems to know Tertuis Bune as well since she’s made a few comments on his Instagram that seem to be referencing Benedict.

      • Raven says:

By the way, the only “proof” of Anna and Benedict is a grainy snapshot where they are sitting next to one another in the audience of a screening at the film festival. There are others seated all around them, and the two of them look bored and are not looking at one another or interacting in any way. It’s as if they are strangers who just happened to be sitting next to one another, so it’s not much proof of anything at all. If you translate the comments on the Polish tabloid articles, you will see that even her fellow countrymen think she is a drug addict looking for publicity who is making the most out of a lucky picture with Benedict that someone oh-so-conveniently was around to take. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it…

      • Froop says:

Wasn’t there a Russian journalist who spotted him at Cannes briefly? I heard that somewhere. And he was spotted at the theatre in June multiple times with a brunette which could easily have been her.

      • Sighs says:

I am baffled at how you guys know all this stuff. Who the heck is Viki, how do you know her name and that she’s Greek?
I’m lucky if I remember my own name half the time. 🙂

      • Raven says:

One of the theatre sightings said he was with a short, curly haired brunette. That doesn’t match Anna but does match one of his old friends who he was hanging out with at James Rhodes’s concert around the same time. The other sighting was a super sketchy report from a girl on Twitter who claimed that he was out with Dakota despite the fact that she was in the States at the time. She offered a blurry picture of nothing as “proof” of her sighting.

I think more than one journalist would have seen him if he had really gone to Cannes. With so many starwatchers and people hoping to see him there, it seems really unlikely he would escape notice. Plus he was busy during that time with the Royal Marsden thing on the 14th, the Park Theatre Gala on the 18th, the Chelsea Flower Show on the 19th, and the Monaco Grand Prix with his pals on the 25th. That does leave a few free days before he arrived in Monaco, but…ultimately, I’m just not believing that the idea of spending a secret half day (lol) with this random girl was enough to make him come to Cannes when TIG, Weinstein, red carpet, film screenings and his celebrity friends weren’t. There’s just no way. She talked to the tabloids and spilled “details” so she obviously has an agenda.

      • Felice says:

I find it a tad concerning that people know the names of his non-industry friends but I guess that’s the public eye for you. He seems the type to like the presence of women for both platonic and romantic reasons so it’s whatever. I’m just excited to see non-blurry photos at Comic Con with a nice California tan…

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

Raven, thanks for the explanation. I agree it seems unlikely that he went Cannes…or dated the Anna woman. For how busy he is it seems unlikely there’s a ‘secret girlfriend’ either!I think he enjoys being with friends, and a lot of them happen to be female.

  2. Kiddo says:

Okay, I’m still confused about the jorts designation. Aren’t these shorts simply khaki material or cargo shorts? I thought jorts were related to denim or jeans? Those really aren’t jeans, even if they were full length.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, those are just shorts. Nothing jeans about them that I can see.

    • Esmom says:

I don’t think they captured a photo of the jorts/library excursion, these are other shots of him, as I understood it.

    • kri says:

He can pull of those “jorts’ anytime. Any.time. I love my brilliant British nerdbatch.

    • Green Eyes says:

I am just utterly disappointed that there are no pictures of said “jorts.” I am waiting with baited breath to see him in a pair.

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @ Kiddo,

      Jean shorts = jorts!

I was afraid we might never see those cute, silly jorts again. I’m so relieved.

      • From North of Boston says:

It dawned on me today that the funniest part of this is that it means he actually chose them for his trip to Boston. When he went on Top Gear, he could have just spontaneously grabbed them to wear when he was getting dressed that day.

He took out his suitcase….considered ALL the items of clothing he owns…and decided “these jorts, I’m sure I’ll have an opportunity to wear them in Boston. I must make room in my suitcase, even if it means I’ll have to leave two of my eleven chambray shirts at home”

I also think it’s funny that he wears the same thing to do a speed test around a race track as he does to tour libraries and art exhibits.

  3. allons-y alonso says:

YES! Batch and I are kindred nerd spirits! I’m big on local histories, doing city tours and visiting as many libraries and museums as I can! Even around my own city. It’s one of my favourite things to do. I’m trying to gorge myself on as much of what I haven’t seen of Sydney before I leave for the the UK.

    • Intro Outro says:

I’m another kindred spirit then ^_^ My poor hubby refuses to go on trips with me other than to some seaside resorts because I tend to drag him around all possible museums and on obscure city tours and whatnot 😀 But how else can you actually say that you’ve *been* to a certain city or region??

    • Faye says:

I’m the same way – the first time I visit a new city/country I love to visit museums and visit historical sites. That and just walking around on your own are great ways to get to “know” a city. It requires a lot of prep and research ahead of time to make sure you do it well, but it’s worth it IMO.

      • allons-y alonso says:

        absolutely

      • kri says:

What else would one do when one goes to a new city? Go to their mall? I mean, museums and historical places/sites are what make a place unique. Miss out on that, and you haven’t really been there (IMHO).

      • Faye says:

@kri – You’d be surprised now many people I know who travel to different places and just go out to eat, shop, their hotels, or beaches.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Thank god both me and my friends love doing everything and organise every trip like: morning – beach, afternoon – museums and historical sites, night – restaurants, bars, clubs… 😀
This, if you go somewhere near the coast, if not, we like to include visits to national parks and nature in general, alongside with the museums and stuff… we even put in some theatre or concerts in the trips… 😀

  4. Lilacflowers. says:

I used to work at the BPL, could give my own fabulous tour of its art, architecture, and crazy stuff. You should have called, Benedict. Yes, I will ask friends there what he was like. And if you are ever in Boston and are into art & architecture, by all means, your the BPL. The murals are outstanding in the world’s first free public library. And they have Shakespeare’s first folios too.

    • Lilacflowers. says:

The official tour doesn’t include the story of the person who died in the space between the 2 buildings or a trip through the crawl space over the Sargeant gallery or gossip about librarians dancing in the fountain during the Billy Bulger-hosted trustees reception. Mine does.

    • Sighs says:

First Folios, you say?? I’ve always wanted to go to Boston. Now I have an even better reason!

    • Kate2 says:

I’m loving that he loved Boston. I’m not a Cumberbitch by any stetch but I get off on famous people coming to my hometown and really enjoying themselves. I loved that Kevin Spacey loved Boston so much he named his new dog Boston. It’s certainly a great place to visit if you’re into history.

Anyhoo, @lilac, what a lucky person you are to have worked at the BPL! My boyfriend is a history nerd like me but he loves libraries as well and drags me into them wherever we go. He’s a NYer, and so on a recent visit we finally went in and took a look around. It’s really beautiful inside. We went to the reading room and stayed till closing.

      • Lilacflowers. says:

@Kate2, I loved working there. I was part time in the old building, working on special collections – all sorts of cool stuff. Made lots of good friends, librarians are not as they are portrayed. As for Kevin Spacey, I gained a whole new respect for him after the marathon bombing. He has visited with the victims several times and donated to the fund and returns frequently to fundraise for the hospitals.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

The Sargent murals are my favorite:

      http://www.sargentmurals.bpl.org/

I truly love that place. I am also glad he hit the Gardner! Man has good taste.

Add me to the list of people who never tire of museums and local history. Boston is a treasure trove. I only wish I didn’t have to work 60 hours a week to be able to afford to live here so I could take in even more.

    • Sunny says:

That sounds AMAZING. I visited Boston again in the spring, and I adored it. It is a city that can appeal to a wide variety of visitors but I found, it really appealed to the nerd in me.

I like to picture Cumby reading in the courtyard of the Isabella Gardner Museum on a rainy Sunday or visiting the Boston Athenaeum.

I wished I had a chance to see the BPL, but that will have to wait til I visit again in the fall. I wish you were the one leading the tour. Your version of a tour sounds can’t miss. 🙂

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        Yay for Boston!

Hope you guys visited Charlestown–it’s the oldest and prettiest part of Boston IMO.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

If he visited the Atheneum, he is my new favorite person. If you ever get a chance to tour that, do. They Washingtons personal library.

    • Janeite says:

I’m still going to call you Lips flowers.

  5. Miss Jupitero says:

Ha! He went to Modern, not Mike’s! Somebody on his team knows something about cannoli! #ilivedonthenorthend

    • Lilacflowers. says:

The owner of Carmelina’s sent them to Modern.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

She had better. Never ever go to Mike’s! Tourist trap! Modern is where the locals go (though you can’t beat Cafe Vittoria for atmosphere).

  6. Zooyork says:

That is a really cute thing to do!

  7. Esmom says:

Most endearing headline I’ve read in a while. I love his interest in the places he visits/works.

  8. Intro Outro says:

Jorts and lobsters. As acutely news-worthy as cannolis and bullhorns 😀 Good thing that I like Benny as much as I do – and that *he* likes libraries and museums as much as I do – so I will hence bite my tongue 😛

  9. GeeMoney says:

Jorts… ugh. Whomever created those needs to be shot.

Love Benedict anyway… hope he enjoyed his time in Boston.

    • Hello Kitty says:

Jorts are weird and gross but I’m glad Cumby is back to wearing them! No more 70’s/80’s styling for him.

I like that Cumby embraces his inner dork. Jorts and library tours FTW.

    • Jenna says:

To be fair – guys have a pretty limited number of options in today’s fashion world for hot weather. Other then khaki’s or the rare score of a lightweight pair of chinos, what can they were really?

It’s likely why so many of the men I know just have all decided to embrace the ‘screw it, hand me a skirt’ mentality. It’s ALSO why I know too many men who seem determined to find the ugliest, loudest, most in your face horrors of fabric FOR those skirts. Apparently you can go light and airy, but it requires truly ugly skirts to make it ‘manly’.

Damn. Now I want someone to convince the Great Nerd Above to try the skirt thing. And come to a Ren faire with us while we work….

      • Anne tommy says:

Kilts. A man in a kilt is lovely. But he needs to have nice legs, not tree trunks or twigs. Dunno about The Cumberlegs, not a fan of his anatomy…

      • GeeMoney says:

Uh… his calves are to DIE for. *drools*

      • EscapedConvent says:

Cumby has absolutely gorgeous legs. His whole legs. Very muscular. Has he worn a kilt? I’ve never seen a pic of him wearing one.

  10. danielle says:

I liked him in star trek, not a cumberbitch tho. But I find this story to be adorable! Bagged lunch! Library tour! I love visiting old libraries. And new ones, for that matter.

    • Lilacflowers. says:

We never figured out which hotel he was at but many of the local hotels will provide guests with rather elaborate bagged lunches. There is a garden courtyard inside the library where people eat lunch and a park directly across the street and another park just two blocks away.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

The farmers market across from the library is amazing, and Trinity Church is well worth a tour. A few blocks down, Arlington church has Tiffany windows.

      • Lilacflowers. says:

@missjupitero, Copley is my favorite farmers market. Trinity is an amazing structure. The Old South is lovely too. Architecturally, Copley Square is a treasure. I love the Christian Science mother church too with the Monitor building. I want to put Hiddleston in the Mapparium to hear the tricks those crazy accoustics play with that voice. Yes, I love my city.

  11. Mia4S says:

He is such a nerd, it’s precious. 🙂

  12. Beth says:

    THAT’S ADORABLE.
Benny the tourist warms my heart.

  13. Indira says:

Gaiz! I’ve been waiting all day (I’m in India) to post this! Such lol.
    http://the-toast.net/2014/07/14/young-henry-viii-was-benedict-cumberbatch/

  14. Jen says:

One of my friends was an extra on that movie and said his American/Boston accent was ATROCIOUS.

    • Lindy79 says:

Uh Oh. Did she say if the accents overall were poor?

    • Froop says:

Somebody else on here said they’d heard him and it was good. I’m not familiar with the Boston accent but most of his attempts at American accents have been pretty dodgy. I’m looking forward to hearing it and seeing if he’s improved.

    • BetsyC says:

Well that’s odd because I chatted with someone who was an extra in some scenes and he said Bc’s accent was great .

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

It’s SUCH a hard accent to do properly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it sucked but I’m reserving judgment until I hear it for myself.

      • From North of Boston says:

Agreed! About the waiting to hear it before I decide. (Not expecting a perfect accent, but I don’t think it will suck)

And when I read comments about his accent on set, I have to wonder which ‘Boston accent’ they are comparing his to. As mentioned on some previous threads, Billy Bulger’s accent is very specific to his background and upbringing , so someone expecting a stereotypical Boston accent won’t get one.

Plus there’s always ADR later if the actors didnt get it quite right on the day.

    • Nic says:

It’s very strange how one anonymous person can post one comment on an anonymous gossip site and immediately people believe it.

    • Lindy79 says:

I didn’t necessarily believe it, more wanted to see if it was Cumberbatch specifically who the bad accent comment was aimed at. The cynic in me figures if you’re not a fan, you’ll be more inclined to say his alone was bad…and that he looks like a posh alien had sex with a lizard-dinosaur with no chin and sloping shoulders and he is the glorious result.

      • Nic says:

I think the hate ridden trolls have now evolved their language and realised that the elaborate insults are losing their impact.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

No I actually don’t think it’s a grand conspiracy caused by people who hate Cumby.

Truthfully, it’s a VERY hard accent to get right, even for people who come from New England but never inherited the accent for whatever reason.

It would be even more challenging if you’re English I would imagine. However, Bale did ok with the accent in The Fighter.
Anyway, I’m excited to see this movie and can’t wait to see how Cumby does with the accent. We might all be pleasantly surprised!

      • Lilacflowers. says:

Depp’s Boston accent in Blow was atrocious although he sure was pretty. Thinking of the accents in this film makes me cringe. I’ve gone over the good/bad Boston accents in film and the accents of various Boston area actors on other threads but for a comparison of two different real Boston accents in the same film, watch The Wizard of Oz. Scarecrow and Tin Man are both Bostonians. Billy Bulger sounds more like the Tin Man.

      • Lindy79 says:

I saw Captain Phillips over the weekend and remembered you’d used him as an example of what not to do. It didn’t seem to come from anywhere I’ve ever heard…

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Lindy, tom Hanks’s Boston accent is Rose Kennedy after a stroke.

  15. dholmas says:

Love Boston. Spent my honeymoon there with my first husband. I have been dozens of times since it is only a couple of hours from my home in Maine. The culture, the food, especially on the North End. I am glad he took the time to do some exploring. Makes me want to go to Portland, a very nice small city with plenty of things to do and a big foodie city, grab Amtrak and head to Boston for a few days.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I love Portland and Maine is beautiful.
I also LOVE Portsmouth, NH (if we’re talking about NE cities).

    • Kate2 says:

@dholmas – Its funny, Boston wasn’t known for being a big foodie place for a long time (outside the North End) but I think its really come around in the last few years, especially in the South End. Tons of places over there that are just awesome.

And I’ve heard wonderful things about Portland, I’m dying to go. My friend went there for her honeymoon (was there for the earthquake, in fact). I have to get up there, its not like its far away from me. And I’ve heard that its a big foodie city as you mention.

TOK – I love Portsmouth too. I’ve been just once and only for an afternoon, but I loved it. Adorable town.

      • NoisyBird says:

I was so happy when I saw this thread. Im from Portland!!! …Oregon. You all should visit! We have a unipiper!
        http://failblog.cheezburger.com/wins/share/62566145

      • Kate2 says:

        @noisy –

I was just speaking with a coworker today that is heading to Portland, OR in a couple of weeks for a wedding. I’ve heard great things about THAT Portland as well and I’d love to visit. Another great up and coming foodie city.

(For the amount of time I spend talking about food on this site you’d think all I do is eat… lol)

      • NoisyBird says:

@Kate2 I do hope your coworker has a wonderful time in Portland!!

    • From North of Boston says:

Portland, Portsmouth, all the ‘port’ towns north of Boston are great to visit 🙂

    • Lilacflowers. says:

@dholmes, love Portland, especially the upstairs bar under the stained glass window and the mini cheeseburger at Grace.

  16. Vesta says:

Public library tour, brown bag lunch & the old jorts combo sounds classic Penny-pinching Benny…

Ahh, all that is missing is me pinching Penny-pinching Benny’s bum.

  17. Miss M says:

So basically we were at the same place and at the same time and I did not see him. Phew! Wait a second… Did I miss seeing Joel?
Ps: I love LOVE Boston public library!

  18. kcarp says:

I am so on the late show. I would have no clue who this guy is if I didn’t read this site. Granted I haven’t been to a movie since my 2 1/2 year old was born.

  19. SophieK says:

This story just makes me smile. Ben letting his nerd flag fly and just sounding generally adorable during his Boston stay. I wish we could see a pic of the outfit he wore. 😉

      • Green Eyes says:

Ooh. My wait is over! Jorts!

BTW, does he have some sort of band around his left ankle?

      • Sighs says:

        Is he wearing an anklet?

      • SophieK says:

The jorts look kind of…awful. What’s around his ankle?? Anklet? Cumbercollective tracking device??

      • Isadora says:

Cumbercollective tracking device!!! Hahahaha… 😀 The poor man.

Or it is a way of communicating with his secret GF.

      • Toto says:

Bracelet on around his ankle, he’s gay?

      • Sighs says:

Communicating with secret GF. Color coded, like the terrorist threat level.
Yellow- keep your jorts on! I’m not with another woman, see?

      • GeeMoney says:

        Actually… that outfit doesn’t look too bad…

He’s British… so I’ll give him a pass on the ankle bracelet… aren’t British guys kind of metro anyway?

        @Sighs
        LMAO

      • GeeMoney says:

Not to mention… wow. He can’t go ANYWHERE without someone reporting it or snapping his picture. I feel bad for him.

      • SophieK says:

@GeeMoney…I know, it’s sad that there is always someone lurking around snapping pictures of him, but such is the nature of things in his world, I suppose.

I would’ve rather it had been a photo that someone had asked him to take with them.

      • Nic says:

        @geemoney

        FINALLY someone says it.

It’s an awful situation for him – I don’t know how he’s not crazy with it.

      • Lindy79 says:

OK I clicked because I wasn’t sure if it was a posed one.
While this picture makes me a bit sad for him, I’d hate anyone taking pics of my arse without my knowing, I also have to say “his back looks AMAZING and I want to run my nails up and down it”

I’ll go back to my quiet indignation now..

      • Encumbered says:

He’s packing quite a good sized lunch, there….;)

My guess on the anklet thing is that it represents having paid for admission and he found it less annoying around his ankle (perhaps?). Can’t say I’d ever think to do that, however….

      • Lilacflowers. says:

@Encumbered, there is no admission fee. It is a public library, whose tag line is “free for all.”
@jammypants, one floor down from where he is walking is a lovely courtyard where many librarians eat their lunch. Or dance drunkenly in the fountain while Billy Bulger sings, as I referenced above.

The question for me is not what he is wearing but why that staircase is so bright in the picture. That’s a dark staircase up to the Sargent Gallery.

The BPL has pictures of some of the murals on its website. Or you can google John Singer Sargent’s Armageddon to check out what he saw. Between the Gardner, MFA, and BPL, he saw a lot of Sargent this past weekend.

      • Green Eyes says:

Maybe his Secret Girlfriend took the picture…

      • Felice says:

the bracelet is to shock her if she gets too close

    • Kate2 says:

I will be eager to hear him talk about his time in Boston when he promotes this movie. I’d be interested to hear what Depp has to say too.

  20. bookwormfoodie says:

I love his nerdiness (which I share) when it comes to local history/sites. It sounds like he had a really enjoyable stay in Boston. The jorts really have to go though. Ugh!

  21. Tessa says:

    Yuk
He looks like every english girl’s weird cousin.
I do not understand the sex appeal.

    • magda says:

Well as an english girl (well, woman), now I can only feel disappointed that I don’t have a weird cousin to take my bagged lunch on a library tour with. Benedict will just have to be my honorary weird cousin.

    • Janeite says:

I wish he were my weird cousin. Not that I don’t already love the ones I have of course! 😉

  22. TotallyBiased says:

Yes, library tours are cool, bagged lunches are cool, BC is cool. But a post about clothes and lunch, after the first Mr. Whippy post in two weeks is closed in less than 24 hours, just seems to beg for hiddlejacking. Just sayin’.

    • Encumbered says:

      Please don’t….

      • TotallyBiased says:

@Encumbered-I hear you. And I’d rather not. Having to r,ummage through BC and now JC threads for a bit of TH conversation gets annoying for both sides, I’m sure. There doesn’t seem to be any other outlet for “thread-closing” frustrations.

@AnneT– you are brilliant. And, I suspect, quite possibly correct. I am off to NI with a selection for his perusal. 😀

    • Anne tommy says:

Maybe if Tom wore some peculiar hats we’d get more of him…

      • Nic says:

Tom hiddleston has nothing to do with Cumberbatch. It’s weird and frankly tiring to have to wade through posts about him on a Cumberbatch thread. Posts are deleted here all the time for no apparent reason, so perhaps that needs to be the treatment for these ENTIRELY OT posts about Hiddleston.

      • 'P'enny says:

Tom has everything to do with Cumberbatch ‘rolls eyes’ they are siamese twins in all things dorky and quintessentially British. Seriously a lot of fans love both and since people can’t chat off forum/thread they share… sometimes. We Hiddles supporters will try and not h-bomb, but if we are starved it’s kind hard not too, especially if things have been happening in the fandom. And the fandom has imploded spectacularly over the last couple of weeks.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

@’P’enny, agreed in everything… they are adorkably siamese…

      • icerose says:

@Anne Tommy -NO NO NO No hats for TW unless they are part of a performance or have met the Hiddle’s style test which is basically no hats unless it is a Furugo Wallaroo Outback UV Sun Hat Natural UPF50+ for sun protecTION

    • jammypants says:

Is it to preserve bandwidth? the post comments do get outrageously long in short amounts of time.

    • Maria of MD says:

      “hiddlejacking”?!
Thanks for the laugh. Love that.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Oh, you’re all stealling my word… Don’t know if happy or sad…
        😉

    • M.A.F. says:

The JC thread from Monday is still open folks.

But it would be nice if the other one had stayed open longer. His keep getting close quicker it seems.

  23. jammypants says:

He’s so precious. I’d love to have bagged lunches with him in the library (or near it if the staff gets pissy about food indoors).

  24. Kazlock 1307 says:

I’m starting to think there isn’t a secret girlfriend. It’s all smoke and no fire.

    • GeeMoney says:

With the way he’s STALKED on Twitter and Tumblr, we would have seen a pic of her by now.

I really do feel bad for him. No one should have to live that way (regardless of their fame and notoriety).

PS – I’d still volunteer to the be gf, though! I’d get used to the cameras. *say cheese!!!*

      • SophieK says:

@GeeMoney…Yep, someone surely would’ve caught him w/ the GF by now. She can’t possibly exist.

    • MissMary says:

Hey, if he’s looking, I’ll be his secret gf, lol.

But yeah, the way he’s celeb-stalked, and the fact many of the British tabs, including the notoriously shark-like Daily Fail, want dirt on him, the “secret” would be out by now.

    • Lindy79 says:

Maybe she’s in the brown bag…is she a Borrower?
Or that princess from that Sinbad movie in the 60’s
      http://images4.static-bluray.com/reviews/681_1.jpg

Goddam it, I’ve figured it out. She’s been living under his hats!!!!
She’s been there the whole time rolling around in the Cumbercurls.

      • MissMary says:

I knew it! He’s not growing them out for Sherlock filming! It’s so his sugar glider-sized secret GF can hide in them!

  25. sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Of course there’s no gf.. and if there is it’s his life, I suppose…
on another note: Sienna Guillory has decided to delete tweet…

    • Kazlock 1307 says:

Who is she? Could she be the secret girlfriend??

      • Froop says:

um no. She’s been married for years. She’s in Ireland working on high rise.

      • MissMary says:

Don’t worry, Kazlock, there’s no secret gf. It’s all just crap floated by some gossip sites to try to flush out a story and it grew legs. People can’t believe an actor who has a fanbase like BC’s could be single so they try to stir the pot.

    • Lee says:

But what has she got to do with this? She’s married and didn’t she tweet about Tom Hiddleston not Benedict.

    • icerose says:

@sonalaceae (Nighty) re Sarah G. The saga continues. After 2 attempts at an apology and another put down on an internet blog she finally deleted the tweet. Free publicity for High Rise. http://www.fashionnstyle.com/articles/22596/20140716/tom-hiddlestons-high-rise-co-star-sienna-guillory-responds-criticism.htm

      • Lindy79 says:

I’ll happily admit that I have often thought the same when I see women/girls at gigs in tiny little dresses and massive heels they can barely walk in, dolled up to the 9s like they’re going clubbing. Mainly because I’m a 34 year old fart who thinks “god I couldn’t be arsed standing/dancing in heels for that long, biker boots are far more comfortable.”

I think it’s a stretch to call it slut shaming as some are though. Bitchy and snarky towards fans, yes, slut shaming no.

      • Isadora says:

I agree. I think her responses and backpaddling were a bit much, but bottom line is: all the people who tweeted her and raged at her.. smh. Hiddleston fans are every bit as bad as those Twihards.

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

There was an overreaction from fans… and media in general…

  26. sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

    I don’t get it either, or maybe I do….

  27. Maria of MD says:

He sounds like a pretty cool guy to just hang with.

  28. jammypants says:

Is Benny doing anything the rest of the year? I know he’s crazy busy next year. He must do more radio plays! I need pleasant voices for my ears during work hours.

    • MissMary says:

I think promotions for The Imitation Game start soon…

      • M.A.F. says:

It is July and the movie comes out in November.

Oh but next week is Comic Con and he could go to TIFF as well but that would be in September. Then the Hobbit in December.

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

Looking forward to that being released. Not keen on Keira Knightly over all,but maybe she’ll up her game in this.Wonder if BC has anything else lined up this year?

      • jammypants says:

oh right, I forgot. I feel like that movie was made ages ago. Glad to see it getting closer to release. I do look forward to it.

      • MissMary says:

With Weinstein et al positioning it for the Oscars, I’d be surprised if we didn’t start seeing TIG-specific interviews and appearances in late August.

      • Katie says:

Richard III/HC starts filming in September.

    • From North of Boston says:

Also, filming for the Hollow Crown/Richard III should be going on sometime in the fall.

And now that you mention radio plays, wonder when the final installment of Cabin Pressure will come out?

  29. melain says:

Just when I thought I couldn’t like him any more, he goes to the library with a sack lunch. Adorable. Can we keep him?

  30. mazomazohyst says:

“The mental image of a bespectacled Benedict bringing his own bagged lunch on a tour of the Boston Public Library? Perfection. ”

I can’t. That is too adorable. Cumberbatches level of adorable is over 9000.

  31. maudfricker says:

I think the final Cabin Pressure is to be broadcast on Christmas Eve

  32. Marcy says:

There is a picture of him at Fenway–on Cumberbatch Web…

    • Lilacflowers says:

And now proof that he has been to the sacred shrine. In other Black Mass cast news, Depp performed a guitar solo during last night ‘s Aerosmith show

    • Encumbered says:

      Dear Benedict,

You appear to have truly enjoyed yourself in this fine American city with a deep colonial history. How interesting it is that you were born in the year of our bicentennial! And now you witnessed the national pride that occurs on our birthday and observed the great American past time (baseball). You have also dined in a fine establishment on the Freedom Trail. Do we dare consider you a potential patriot? We will forgive you your “traitorous” first name if you want to pledge allegiance. And will promise not to dump any more tea in the harbor.

      Signed: We the People….

      • Marcy says:

I continue to rack my brain to determine why this man fascinates me so much, I find his dork-nerd-sweet thing just enchanting…I actually asked my co-worker if she wanted to try and go to San Diego next week just catch a glimpse of him. But hey, it’s San Diego, so, no harm really if I didn’t see him. I’ve got a crap load of work next week so it’s not even remotely possible, but if she said let’s try and do it, I would absolutely go. Of course, sensible girl that she is, she shut me down.

      • SophieK says:

I’m with you, Marcy. I’m way too old to be fangirling over this sweet dork but yet, here I am anyway. Love the pic of him at Fenway. I’m sure SDCC will bring even more levels of Cumby goodness. I will sit patiently, 3000 miles from San Diego and await the updates! 😀

      • From North of Boston says:

        Go Marcy!

San Diego is a great place to visit and spend time in, even without BC sightings!

      • Jane says:

Marcy and SophieK, I hear ya! I’m too old, too, to have a celebrity crush like this, but I’ve fallen under his dorky-nerdy-adorable beyond belief spell. And he’s smart, and kind-hearted and an irreverent smartass, too! Oh, and not bad to look at either.. ;).

    • Patris says:

the photo was taken a 1 month ago

      • Encumbered says:

Probably when the Red Sox played the Minnesota Twins. Sox won: 2 to 1. Hope he cheered them on, ate hot dogs, popcorn and had a beer or two. Looks like he spilled something on his shirt in the picture–assume it was beer!

Also must say he looks a bit….moist.

      • Thora says:

Must say he looksd sexy as hell, moist, sweaty and dirty lol, wamt to eat him up.

  33. Maggie says:

    Happy 38th birthday Benedict.

I hope your day is filled with love, family, good friends, fun and fine food and wine.

    Enjoy!

  34. Katie M says:

“If Benedict knew what girls like Anna and Katia were saying about him to the press in their home countries, he would die. (I won’t even get into the dire things Katia and her sister have said about him to Russian press).”

What kind of comments? Can someone please enlighten me? I really hope he doesn’t associate with her anymore. She is just…ewww.

    • MissMary says:

The Katia comments were just the implications he had “tutored her in acting” and that he was her “special friend” all the while saying “oh but I Have a boyfriend!” and acting offended people dared to insinuate she and BC may have hooked up (she milked it for all it was worth, tbh, and he and his PR team’s silence on the entire debacle really highlighted her fame-grasping). The Anna (the Polish actress) had a story that they went to dinner, had a romantic evening, he flew to Cannes to visit with her for part of the day (which would’ve required some amazing bending of physics as he was demonstrably elsewhere during the alleged visit), and said he had invited her to the theatre in June in London for a date. It was kind of a mess. I’m sure there’s more, and some folks have more detailed info.
