Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ trailer: underwhelming?

max1

Back in the summer of 2012, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy went off to Namibia to film Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller’s “prequel” to the Mad Max franchise which starred Mel Gibson. Hardy took the “Mad Max” role and Charlize took the Furiosa role. As I said, that was 2012. It took them months of filming, and then I think they went back and did some reshoots at some point in the past year as well. The whole thing seemed like it was probably a mess – a glorious mess, perhaps, but a mess all the same. It’s not going to be out until 2015.

So at Comic-Con this weekend, George Miller finally revealed a trailer for the film. He was pretty much the only person holding down the fort for Mad Max as well – no Hardy, no Theron, no Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, no Zoe Kravitz, no Nicholas Hoult. You can read more about Miller’s discussion here. Here’s the trailer:

I will say this: Tom Hardy looks GOOD. That haircut, the clothes, everything. He looks good and I kind of want to see more of him. Granted, I’m not super-familiar with the original Mad Max trilogy, but I thought Furiosa was supposed to be, like, the baddest bitch around. Charlize seems rather subdued here. But her shaved head looks good, I’ll give her that. As for all the rest of it… I don’t know. I’m so tired of dystopian fantasies. Blah.

I like the originals and they weren’t that polished but that seemed to work for them (esp. Mad Max and the Road Warrior).

This to me is too finished or too many special effects. I just don’t know. The trailer didn’t sell me.

Tom Hardy does look fine though.

    • Godwina says:

Not polished? YMMV but to me they just don’t look Hollywoodized. That’s a plus for a lot of us, who prefer their films un-botoxed. Miller has craft. But I do agree with you that the new one is loaded with H-Wood smaltz. Let’s hope Miller’s style shines through it all.

    • lisa2 says:

I think that is what bothered me .. all the special affects. And the first look was all explosions and not much dialogue. It gets to visually confusing for me to just see these exploding in millions of pieces. I loved the first 2 movies in the serious. Mel was beyond hot in those films. Hardy looks good; but he doesn’t do it for me on a regular.

Still up in the air if I’ll see it yet.. well next year is along time away.

      • Rose says:

Tom Hardy looks good….jesus, he looks mighty hot and he has a screenpresence that’s quite ecxeptional these days. He’s one of or the best actor around these days!

    • FLORC says:

      This all the way!

There are some movies that are classics and cult classics because they’re unpolished. Then a remake comes along and they overdo the special effects. Some movies just shouldn’t be remade.

And yea. CT looked way too helpful/nice and calm.

  2. black orchid, says:

awesome, Tom hardy is back again

  3. Kiddo says:

Tom looks good in the rendering, but I’m not excited to go see it. Will wait until it’s streaming or free.

  4. Godwina says:

George Miller can direct effing circles around pretty much all the American Hollywood action directors, so I’m optimistic. His best work (Road Warrior, Babe II) owns that amazing Aussie cult-movie know-how and edge and texture that are pretty hard to fake (see also Razorback, Rogue, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Heavenly Creatures,). I’m so relieved this movie is in Miller’s hands. SO much more in tune with my personal tastes. 🙂 Yay!

Cautiously optimistic. Plus, bonus Hardy and *no* Gibson.

    • coco says:

Heavenly Creatures was Peter Jackson but agree with you re: Millers directing skills! Wasn’t expecting anything after all the reported shoot troubles but after seeing the trailer I’m really looking forward to this, Tom looks divine and Charlize looks badass.

    • nico says:

I love Picnic at Hanging Rock. That film is haunting.

  5. Sixer says:

The Bloke ALWAYS looks good. Even when his spare tyre is on view. Can’t say the same for the film or trailer, however. I’m over post-apocalyptic industrial wastelands (and space stations or colonies on Mars). I think the post-apocalyptic narrative should go under the sea or something instead.

  6. T.Fanty says:

The trailer left me completely cold for *this* version, but it does make me want to watch the first Mel Gibson one again.

    • lisa2 says:

Mel was so hot in those movies (damn I miss that Mel). I need to revisit them too.

      • T.Fanty says:

I know! I wonder if it’s on Netflix. I also wonder if it’s possible to re-watch them without them feeling tainted by his awfulness? I hope so.

    • cr says:

That was my reaction. It looked good as a trailer, but didn’t make me want to watch it, knowing that there are the earlier ones out there. Didn’t look like it was going to be something different than what had been out there already.

    • Chris says:

Loved the colorful characters in the original and all the quotable dialogue. Virtually every line was gold.

    • FLORC says:

I was wondering why Mad Max has been all over tv lately.
      Cold to this version also.

    • Lady Macbeth (Hiddles F.) says:

I even gave the dvd of MadMax 1 to a charity shop… it was that boorrriiinggg. I liked number two and three though. And yes, Mel Gibson was soooo hot.. he seemed another person compared to the one recently seen at Cannes!

    • j.eyre says:

Its making me want to watch Tina Turner videos

      • T.Fanty says:

Seriously. It’s 9pm and I’m still singing “all I want is life beyyyyyyyyyyyoonnnnnnnnd the thunderdowowome.”

  7. Innie Outie says:

Loved it – the grittiness, the style – and am excited for it! But I’ve never seen the original films, so my virgin eyes and ears might just be very good soil 😛 It also seems like the critics are fawning over it, and I’ve read a couple of reviews (trailer reviews sound weird in themselves but still) which specifically emphasised that the way MM:FR is shot is reminiscent of the way films were made back in 1970’s – most of effects being technical and CGI only enhancing them.

  8. eliza says:

Say what you will about Mel Gibson as a person but he was a good actor and in my opinion, no one can beat his Mad Max movies.

    This seems like a Zzzzzzzzzzz.

I realize actors have lots of commitments and cannot always be promoting at ComicCon, BUT a couple of the actors could have made an appearance for the day. As far as I know, Charlize is not filming at the moment, just walking the pap stroll with her troll every few days.

  9. Sugar says:

Apparently you have to be beautiful to survive in this world.

I’m sick of dystopian movies, too and really question why so many are being made.

    • FLORC says:

It’s almost a contradiction. An uncomfortable world where life is hard and suffering is normal. Yet people take the time to keep themselves clean and make those rags they wear look so fashionable. In a world like that you should (in theory) dress to look the scariest and strongest and not that pretty.

    • FingerBinger says:

Dystopian novels and movies have been around for a long time. This is nothing new. You can go back as far as the 1920’s for dystopian movies. I’ve seen quite a few of these movies and everyone in them isn’t beautiful.

  10. Kali says:

Tom Hardy = Best. Hood. Ornament. EVER.

  11. Maria says:

    Hardy looks good.

    No comment on Theron.

  12. T.C. says:

So much CGI makes it look like a music video of pretty people with firth on their face modeling.

  13. Vesta says:

In the beginning Max killed a little two-headed lizard with his heel?
    That’s not hot.
Ok, even without that scene, I would skip this high-definition effect vomit.

  14. MrsBPitt says:

    umm…no thanks…

  15. Frida_K says:

It seems kind of like the movie 300 or something. Like a cartoon version.

    I am left puzzled here.

Still. Tom Hardy. Will have that, thank you.

  16. Lydia says:

Basically everything with Tom Hardy isn’t as good as I’d like it to be. He’s not that great of an actor, objectively speaking.

    • Rocko says:

You’re so wrong girl. Hardy is a top-notch actor, the best there is and fucking versatile! In every movie, bad or good he steals the show…watch Bronson, Lawless, The Take, Locke etc. etc. and you will be surprised!

  17. JenniferJustice says:

Poops on Theron and her dirty model look. Why does it always have to be the “I’m so beautiful, I can be bald and still look hot?” Just once, once, can’t we have a realistic dirty, scrubby, scabby, crusty chick who like any normal person in these circumstances just looks like she’s a survivor – a normal creaton?

  18. maura says:

How are they ever going to top Mel and Tina Turner singing “We Don’t Need Another Hero”? This could have been filmed at Burning Man!

  19. Sasha says:

Charlize doesn’t look good. She may have though “i’m so beautiful that I can look hot even bald” Nope sister, you look bad. You don’ have the bone structure to go bald. You got a weird nose (maybe too much blow?) And fat, go back to the gym and get some tone.

  20. Rocko says:

WHOOOW…this trailer looks as mad as it should be! Seems to me that Miller did a good job once again..
