  1. word says:

Nicki Minaj’s new video…disgusting. Wasn’t there a debate yesterday in the T.S. post about women being sexualized and objectified? This is the worst I’ve seen so far…and it was done BY A WOMAN.

    • Clever hand says:

I feel the same about Nicki as I do about gaga: yawn. Everyone’s seen your ass nicki. No one cares anymore. I won’t even click cause I’m not a 13 year old boy so I know there is nothing there for me.

      • word says:

I’m not a 13 year old boy either, but I like Drake and I heard he was in the video…so I wanted to see. He didn’t rap, just got a lap dance…which was gross in my opinion.

    • Mike says:

Doesn’t she have the right to exploit herself? Her body; her choice. Not just the choices we agree with

      • word says:

Yes she does. I also have the right to voice my opinion.

      • Rae says:

I have no horse in race, but I would say that depends on whether it IS actually her choice to do so, or if it’s what she feels like she MUST do in order to stay relevant in an industry that as a general rule objectifies women.

      • T.C. says:

        @Rae

Good point. It may not truly be her choice. Behind each of these singers is a male producer pressuring them to be more sexy, show more body parts to sell records because apparently talent is not enough when you are a woman. Male musicians can look like death warmed over and dress in three layers of clothing.

    • Gilmore says:

But it’s her body and she’s allowed to show it off if she wants? Sure it isn’t entirely new, but it’s not anything different then what any other pop star does in their music videos.

      • word says:

I wouldn’t say ALL pop stars do that. Either way, what is the point? It must be for attention, why else? Why can’t people rely on talent anymore?

      • Gilmore says:

The most prominent pop stars that are out now show off their body or sexuality in some way, shape or form is what I mean. There may not be a point to it, but I feel like she’s always made music videos like this from what I understand? This will appeal to her fanbase if that’s the case then. Anyway this is the least offensive ‘famewhore’ move I have ever witnessed, so who really cares? Shaking your ass occasionally doesn’t minimize your talent imo.

      • QQ says:

        Oh
        My
        God
        Lookat
        Her Butt

        *minaj cackleeessss*

      • Clever hand says:

She has every right. All I’m saying is it’s become boring.

      • word says:

@ Gilmore – you have the right to your opinion, but I personally believe being half naked and shaking her ass really minimizes her talent (and others who do the same).

Also, there are a number of female singers who choose not to showcase their bodies like that, or do strip teases and lap dances in their music videos…the problem is THOSE females are not as famous and don’t get the attention.

      • T.C. says:

There have been worse I agree but man EVERY screen shot is of butts being shaken, smacked, or caressed by other women. It’s fine to use sex appeal but there is very little artistic merit to the video IMO. She samples HEAVILY on Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back”. Like 80% of the music is Mix-A-Lot’s song which is an iconic song all by it’s self. Why not come up with her own music when she was shading others for not coming up with their own stuff? It seems lazy to me with the gimmick just being big asses on display. She has nothing else. It’s like sampling heavily from Michael Jackson or the Beatles and passing it off as original.

After the posts yesterday about Swifty demeaning Black women by having them twerking I’m surprised no one is concerned about the 4 Black dancers in the video being shown as just ass. We are all hypocrites one way or the other for giving Nicki a pass.

      • me says:

        @ T.C.

I agree, why is Nicki being given a pass ?

      • Tiffany :) says:

Wading into the thick of things…

I feel like there are three issues at play.
1.) exploitation of the female body in media
2.) over-sexualization of black women in media
        3.) cultural appropriation

In regards to this video, it is my understanding that #1 and #2 might apply, but #3 would not because Nicki is using women of her own race in the video, doing a dance that had roots in her culture. She isn’t using another culture as a prop or gimmick in her video, she is a part of what she is presenting, which is different than Taylor’s video.

I am still mulling over these very important topics, and don’t really have a firm stance on Taylor or Nicki’s videos, but I am just trying to maybe frame the different perspectives that were being shared yesterday.

      • snowflake says:

if nicki is using black dancers to twerk, and swifty was exploiting her black dancers by holding a gun to their head and make them twerk, then i guess nicki is exploiting her dancers too. i think nicki’ s getting a pass b/c people think oh, she’s black, too, so she’s not exploiting them. the dancers in all these videos got paid to twerk, the only diff is swifty is white and people have a problem with her doing it but not nicki. so i guess this is another case of, if you’re black, it’s ok to do it, like the n word is a horrible horrible word but yet, it’s ok if it’s said by a person of color. double standard. sorry, but it’s so offensive, why are you saying it to yourself and other people of color? and it is a horrible offensive word so I don’t get why it’s ok for certain people to use it and others not. if you use it, how can you get offended when someone else uses it? it really aggravates me when I hear my husband and his family use it among themselves (hubby’s mixed). I dont’ want to use it or anyone to use it, because from what i’ve been told it’s a horribly derogatory word. and i agree, so that makes it even harder for me to understand why a person of color wants to use it.

      • Observer says:

        @snowflake
I dislike Nicki doing it as much as I dislike Taylor doing it. Race has nothing to do with it for me personally, and I absolutely hate the use of the N word no matter who says it, be it black or white or whatever. It’s just NOT okay.
I really hate when rappers use it as well. I really don’t believe most of us black people use the N word, I don’t know any black person who use it AT ALL.

    • Wilma says:

I’ve seen worse. Miley Cyrus comes to mind. Also, there’s a certain amount of skill on display in the video that makes me wish I wasn’t as stiff as I am.

      • word says:

Oh I’ve seen worse as well…I meant to say this is the worst Nicki Minaj video I’ve personally seen. Yeah, what can beat Miley straddling a wrecking ball naked? What are these women trying to accomplish by doing this? Is it really about feminism, or is it just about the mighty dollar? Sex sells.

  2. Mia4S says:

Johnny Depp goes the nepotism route. Interesting… So much for raising his minor children away from Hollywood.

    • Mike says:

She is 15 years old. Old enough to decide if she wants to be in show business. At least he is starring in the movie with her so he can protect her and show her the ropes

      • Mia4S says:

15 years old, a minor. That’s the age to decide you want to be in showbusiness? Yeah right.

Look if Depp had always been a Hollywood famewhore it wouldn’t mean much, but he made such a show of being away from it and above it. Just feels a bit…off.

      • lucy2 says:

        She’s 15 already? I feel old…

I have no idea what his kids look like or anything about them, so they did manage to keep them somewhat private. If it were me, I’d want her to wait a bit longer before entering show biz, just for a bit more maturity. As the child of a famous star, she’s going to get a lot of scrutiny and attention for it, way more than most kids just starting out as unknowns do.

    • T.C. says:

It’s disturbing to see more celebrity kids with no acting history getting plum roles because of their parents. It’s embarrassing seeing people like Depp and Will Smith playing that game. I bet Depp’s ex was the one protecting the kids from Hollywood just like Will’s ex brought up his first son away from the limelight.

      • jinni says:

Oh please, I’m sure Saint Vanessa also had to agree to letting their daughter be in that movie, so i doubt this was all Johnny’s doing. Besides Vanessa has had the kids sing on her albums and actually talks about them in mag interviews more than Johnny did. Also, I’ll bet her mother starting out as a child star at a very young age had a big influence on Lily’s desire to be in the business at such a young age.
Lastly, I’m sure this movie is more along the lines of Kevin Smith’s usually small indie type of movie and not some mega blockbuster like the movies with Will Smith’s kid.

  3. Jaderu says:

Just watched the SNL Best of Phil Hartman a week ago! Miss him. I used to almost wet myself laughing at him doing Frankenstein.

    • Renee says:

I LOVED his Frankenstein too, the sketch where he is having the affair with Jane of Tarzan and Jane and attempts to disguise his voice when a suspicious Tarzan demands to know who Jane is speaking to? I burst out laughing whenever I think of that.

    • Mike says:

I loved his voice impressions on The SImpsons

    • eliza says:

      He was THE BEST!

    • mia girl says:

      I adored Phil Hartman.
From everything on SNL, to his time on News Radio and his work on The Simpsons. He was one of the funniest guys on the planet and the heart of SNL during that time.

Do you remeber on SNL a commercial he made for “Colon Blow”. Or when he pretended to be President Clinton jogging and went into McDonalds? I could go on and on.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

@Mia-I have a DVD of the Best of SNL commercial parodies and I’ve watched the Colon Blow one like 8,000,000 times. It is f*cking hysterical.

Dammit! I need to watch it RIGHT NOW.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I loved Colon Blow! I used to endlessly tease my mom because she was into high fiber cereal, and that just summed it up so well.

…I am laughing just thinking about it right now!

      • Kori says:

@Mia OMG–Phil Hartman as Clinton was hilarious. My hubby and I were doing that ‘warlords’ bit just the other day. (For those who haven’t seen the skit, Clinton jogs into McD’s and proceeds to shmooze at all the tables, stealing fries–he talks about Somali Warlords with a mouth full and it’s ‘warwords’.

I loved Darrell Hammond’s Clinton as well but have a real soft spot for Hartman’s. Besides the McD skit, the one sending up COPS with him and Hilary is HILARIOUS.

And Hartman’s Frank Sinatra was classic.

    • Boxy Lady says:

My two favorite Phil Hartman moments:

      1. He was an Eastern European weightlifter in the “All Drug Olympics” and one of the commentators (Kevin Nealon) ran down this laundry list of drugs the weightlifter had taken before attempting to lift something like 2000 lbs. Phil’s weightlifter tried the lift and tore his arms clean off! Kevin Nealon as the commentator said something like,” Oh boy! He’s gonna feel THAT in the morning!”
      2. He was playing Frank Sinatra to Sting’s version of Billy Idol and “Frank” said,” You don’t scare me! I got chunks of guys like you in my STOOL!”

Sometimes these moments randomly pop in my head and I start giggling to myself. 🙂

      • Shelby says:

Thanks for reminding me about that Sinatra bit, that was hilarious!!! I don’t know how he kept a straight face 😉

      • Kori says:

PH as Sinatra! Especially that bit you mentioned. And dissing Steve & Edie as brown-nosers.

    • lucy2 says:

He was so great in everything, but SNL will always be my favorite. He could do everything from goofy to gravitas.

  4. Pandy says:

Nicki Minaj is a joke, as is her video. I’m happy these ladies today do not count themselves as feminists. Because they are setting that cause back about a hundred years. The dripping coconut was particularly klassy.

    • Gilmore says:

*sigh*Are you a feminist? If so, I would think you would know that your comment is not at all in the spirit of what feminism represents. Calling someone “not klassy” because of a music video, for embracing their sexuality, sounds like a judging another woman for what she chooses to do with her own body. Just because YOU wouldn’t do it doesn’t make it wrong and it doesn’t set any women back at all. I’m not really a fan of her music, but if you read an interview or two you would know she’s a feminist and makes a lot of interesting points about it.

      • Peanut says:

The imagery in the video is one thing. I actually found the lyrics to the song more disturbing/concerning. Basically it boils down to sex in exchange for Balmain and Alexander McQueen. I don’t find that empowering. At all.

      • word says:

This is “First World Feminism”. Go to a third world country and see what females are really fighting for…real equality. They aren’t fighting for the right to have their asses out and rap about sex in exchange for designer bags. They are fighting for the right to go to school, to not be forced into child marriage, they are fighting for the right to work in medical/legal professions. Calling Nicki a “feminist” is really a slap in the face to women who are really fighting for change and equality.

      • Tiffany :) says:

        Good points, word.

I am not fully siding one way or another, but I do not think that putting your body on display automatically equals an act of feminism. She has every right to do what she thinks is fun, but I am not entirely convinced that she wasn’t pressured into being the sexual character that she has become due to the male dominated YMCMB.

      • word says:

        @ Tiffany

It’s not easy being one of the only females in any field…so I give her that. It’s her body, she can do as she pleases, but please don’t use feminism as your excuse for shaking your naked ass. Why not be honest and just say the real reason…sex sells. She wants to sell records and remain popular.

  5. TheOriginalKitten says:

All the comments about Nicki’s video is reminding me of the video for “Untitled (How Does it Feel?)” that D’Angelo made. If that wasn’t exploiting sexuality…

Also, can we watch that right now?
    HOTTEST. VIDEO. EVER.

  6. Blythe says:

I love the “Anaconda” video. Besides the product placement, I loved everything about it. Nicki is in control of the entire situation. *twerks rambunctiously*

    • Mmhmm says:

I admittedly loved it too…like who clicks on a song by nicki minaj (about ass and sex) and expect anything different? I knew there was going to be Minaj ass everywhere and that’s what I got lol.

  7. Ana says:

I just played that Nicki video for Sir Mix-a-Lot’s song which is one of my fave songs ever. I am not ashamed to admit it. lol 😛 Well ew…they totally tainted that song for me… 🙁

  8. yolo112 says:

..lol.. I don’t care what y’all say, I love it..lol.. I’m totally cool with an ass shakedown every now and again. And either way, love it or hate it, EVERYONE has something to say so…that’s what she was aiming for. She’s crazy.

  9. Dani says:

Why is it not okay for her to shake her ass in a video but Miley can walk around on stage in vadge thongs? Is it because her butt is actually huge? Good for her. She can walk around naked if she pleases. Enough with this setting women back one hundred centuries because of a body part. You know what’s setting us back? The constant need to hate on other women.

    • me says:

Who agrees with anything Miley does? Also, just so you know Nicki has had many beefs with other female artists (especially ones gaining fame). She’s not as pro-female as you think. Her lyrics are also not very “pro female”….unless you like being called a “ho” and “b*tch”. She’s not the only artist to use that language or use her body to sell records, but call it was it is. It’s PR. It’s not female empowerment.

  10. Josefa says:

Woah, Lily Rose looks a lot like her mother. She’s really pretty.

  11. me says:

Some people were up in arms over Taylor’s video yesterday, yet those same people are silent on Nicki’s video. Interesting…

    • Observer says:

Many of us are not silent.

    • AlmondJoy says:

Maybe because the Swifty video had its own thread instead of just a link and Kaiser specifically asked “Does Taylor have a race problem?” Today more people are concered about the Duggar woman’s comments and the situation in Ferguson. Also, the links thread always has less comments than the rest of the headlines, right?

  12. Charlotte says:

Genuine Nicki Minaj quote “I want people—especially young girls—to know that in life, nothing is going to be based on sex appeal.”

    What a load of sh*t!!!

  13. Camille (The Original) says:

I wonder if Kanye will end up with Nicki after him and Kim split. She seems to have everything he could want in a mix of Kim X Beyonce- she has a music career and a large bum. I want to see them together!

    • yolo112 says:

Hahahaa…. well, a- unless kanye has an anaconda, Nicki don’t want none (gotta read that like the song) and 2- I’m pretty sure she would eat him alive. I seriously doubt he could hang with her, she doesn’t strike me as the submissive type.

  14. lisa2 says:

I maybe in the minority.. but I really like Nicki.. I think she is very talented. I don’t like the over sexual things because once you go down that road it is a slippery slope. You have to be over the top all the time. This to me is what happened to Gaga.. she became so boring and try hard.
