Kristen Stewart covers Vanity Fair France, talks media, gossip & taking time off

KS cover

Kristen Stewart covers the new issue of Vanity Fair France. VF France released the cover a few days ago and I was waiting until we finally got some quotes from the piece, which dropped yesterday. And my God, there are SO MANY QUOTES. Kristen was interviewed by Ingrid Sischy, who wanted to ask Kristen about every single little detail about Clouds of Sils Maria, the film Kristen is promoting. I really had to cull like a maniac to find the best quotes, but you can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

Meeting French director Olivier Assayas: “We met in a restaurant in Paris. This was the first time Olivier displayed his way, which is not wordless because everything he puts forth is fully pregnant. But we didn’t talk much.”

Her character in Clouds of Sils Maria: “I am Valentine, the personal assistant to Maria Enders, this famous actress in the film [played by Juliette Binoche]. In Sils Maria both of these women represent two very different stages of life. Their perspectives are so different, yet they’re so similar and they can share so much. At the same time everything that brings them together polarizes them. It’s just like this weird f–king emotional thing that they can’t put their finger on. They are not friends. They’re not coworkers. They’re not girlfriends. They’re not mother and daughter or vice versa. They’re just f–king all of it and it’s so weird. That’s why I wanted to play the part. I am her co-conspirator in every way.

On personal assistants: “As actors we get into these isolated positions that can get weird because you tend to guard yourself in a way that limits interactions. So it’s normal for actors to hire friends or somebody to be around. The lines can get really blurred, because they are working for you. They are an employee but they’re also your friend and a creative partner. Then you become codependent and obsessive. It’s this weird unbalanced, but really odd relationship that is so unique and so esoteric in terms of how many people actually experience it.”

Gossip, the internet: “People say how insignificant that stuff is. It is really easy for a pompous person to say it doesn’t mean anything… You definitely do not want to hear anyone in my position harp on the hardships….To speak lightly about it is okay. For people to say it is not a big deal, it is not real life—that is a sentiment I couldn’t peddle more. I completely agree that all of this media stuff, if you’re involved in it, can’t really touch you physically, and it shouldn’t affect you and all that. Yet it does technically affect your life. Obviously in the best ways imaginable. In dreamlike ways it affects your life. But from anyone’s perspective it is nuts and it should totally be acknowledged.

Why she took “time off” after Rupert Sanders: “I was looking around. There are a couple of things that started and stopped that didn’t get off the ground, and I put a lot of time into those things that didn’t go anywhere, which, happens. And after that—this could totally say something about where I was at—it took a special thing… Seriously, I think that after Twilight and after Snow White and the Huntsman, which were such huge movies, that I felt I didn’t want to search for the next ‘big, successful’ thing. One thing that people do with two enormous movies is think that that’s their thing now, to do big movies, and ride that wave. I got off this huge wave and said, “I’m going to go in for a bit.” I’m going to come back out later. That was good. I needed some time off. I needed to get in with my friends. I needed to be back in my life. I needed to like, live in my house and be surrounded by my own s–t and play guitar and write.

[From Vanity Fair]

Kristen also talks about signing up to be a Chanel girl and how much she loves Karl Lagerfeld (no mention of Choupette). Sischy makes several references to the “scandal” involving Rupert Sanders but Kristen didn’t really take the bait, only talking about her career and the media for the most part. I like that Kristen acknowledged that no one likes when celebrities complain about the media – that was in reference to Sischy discussing Gwyneth Paltrow’s statement that she has it harder than women working 9-5 jobs. Again, Kristen didn’t take the bait. She’s learnin’ y’all. But she still has such an awkward way of speaking and phrasing. “Everything he puts forth is fully pregnant“? That’s not a translation either, she really said it.

  1. Sullivan says:

    She looks gorgeous.

  2. Abbott says:

Our favorite mouth-breathing thespian makes sense for once. I have never liked and hated one celeb so much in my life.

    • Sarah123 says:

Could you explain this part to me?

“It’s this weird unbalanced, but really odd relationship that is so unique and so esoteric in terms of how many people actually experience it.”

      Weird, unbalanced, but really odd.

  3. Laura says:

I’m loving Kristins look lately. And her short hair is very cute IMO.
Offtopic but Brad and Ange are officially married??

    • mimif says:

I’m loving her hair too, even tho homewreckers are bad (I read that here). Where’s LAK, we need some Kristin power here before the haters show up.

    • black orchid, says:

agree , she takes gr8 pics and her editorials are always fab , love the pic of her slouching down the wall!

      • Kali says:

That is SUCH a good pic, legs for days in that shot.

Gotta be honest, I’m actually very tempted by that haircut. I think now it’s grown in a little bit, stylists actually know how it sits and what to do with it.

  4. Kiddo says:

Very, very 80’s period looks with clothing and hair? I’m happy she has her mouth closed in the final pic. She looks good here. Her face looks very pretty and ‘soft’ on the cover, which is unusual for her. My only complaint is placement of the hand, relative to the camera and the black polish on the stubby nails. It made me think of this, unfortunately: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QbXXWIIXjo
Not that they are big, just the way the appearance came across. This is more of a comment on the stylist and photographer, for the cover.

    • mimif says:

Lol oh no, not the man hands.

      • Kiddo says:

        Yeah. The man hands.

      • mimif says:

I have (work related) man hands so I’m reporting your comment for spam. I hope no one gets mad.

      • Kiddo says:

I’m going to be reported to the *Passive-aggressive committee, so flagging for spam is overkill, but idle (man) hands are the devil’s work, so click away!

        * The passive aggressive committee chair is John Cleese. Punishment is 50 laps of silly walks. It will be exhausting.

      • mimif says:

Oh shit, I just guffawed. Best comment in days, so much everything in that post.

  5. YourHatIsOnFire says:

I always find myself being so indifferent towards her. Sometimes she will say or do something harmless or cute and I’ll find myself liking her, but then she’ll say something completely arrogant and pompous and I’ll fall off the band wagon again.

As for her incorrect use of words, I can’t harp on her for that as I do that myself. It’s not in an attempt to sound smarter than you are but rather that your brain just connect things together fast enough and you’re always scrambling. For me, anxiety plays a huge part and I’m going to take a gander and assume that that it does for her as well.

    • Kiddo says:

My brain does weird stuff to me, especially if I’m not watching. I wrote ‘police’ instead of polish before. Things like that happen randomly as if someone in my head is playing tricks on me.

    • Dawn says:

      Ditto.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

She’s very bland to me. The only reason she gets any attention from me, is when she says something stupid or idiotic….other than that….nothing about her is really all that interesting to me. I don’t like her acting, and I think she’s cute, but not all that.

  6. Pixelated says:

I just can’t get past the cover. ‘Meeting with the most punk actress in Hollywood’??? Ok…

  7. Jlee says:

I love her hair in these pics. Very Linda Evangelista.

  8. TTMuch says:

None of it makes any sense! Fully pregnant? Is there a way to be kinda pregnant? WITH AN IDEA no less. Being gossiped about and attacked on the internet puts her in a dreamlike state?? Really? I was just waiting for the discussion re: her headspace re: her craft

    • Rice says:

I think she’s trying to say that everything he does is full of meaning or highly significant. Otherwise, I’m really not sure. Anyway, she looks very good in this shoot.

    • Josephine says:

Well, I don’t think she’s very bright, and every interview reveals that.

I don’t find her to be a beautiful girl, but I really like these pics and I think this is among the best pics she has taken. She is interesting, but not quite beautiful. But I do wish she would keep her mouth shut – her interviews are exhausting and horrible.

  9. Mar says:

I always felt like she got the crappy end of the stick for her actions. She’s a young girl that became very famous very fast and she didn’t have a lot of experience yet. Plenty of young starlets make bad choices but they don’t get put display like hers did

    • Jane says:

Plenty of starlets don’t act as if they are above everyone else, constantly complain or f-ck their married directors in public.

      • Bridget says:

Um, its Hollywood. Of course they do, we just don’t see it because they’re not usually high profile enough.

      • aquarius64 says:

@bridget – we saw Stewart’s foolishness because she did it with Sanders on an open, public street. She has more than enough money to get a hotel, let alone a hotel room, or rent a house, to do her shenanigans. Her “time off” statement = my career took a hit because of my Mini-Coopering and I couldn’t get work for a while. She got some indie work, but blockbusters are going to be beyond her reach. Studios are going to think she brings her mess to the job and it impacts the box office.

      • @aquarius64 says:

Sure, which is why Lionsgate paid $7.5 million (a hefty figure for a movie that hadn’t been filmed yet at the time the deal went down) for the distribution rights to her and Jesse Eiesenberg’s action-comedy, American Ultra.

As for “bringing her mess to the job,” she does not have a bad reputation on movie sets. Quite the opposite, she’s known for working incredibly hard and being very passionate about filming, and in just about every movie she does, “lowly” crew members and productions assistants tweet/post on facebook about her being very polite and easy to work with.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Eh, her affair was just the end of a LONG list of crap she pulled. I mean, her getting caught with him, at that moment, was just the icing on the cake. Prior to all that, she was blaming her teachers for failing school, she was talking about how boring her life was and how she wanted something to f-ck her over, whenever she would show up at premieres, she would look like she didn’t want to be there, and on top of all that, she was bragging about how ‘real’ and ‘authentic’ she was…over every other celeb basically…..and then she gets caught getting dry humped by her married director, in broad daylight, in a backstreet…..endangering, not one, but TWO film BO, and future sequels.

And if someone got the short end of the stick with the affair, it was Rob. Beyond Will Ferell calling her a ‘trampire’, who really called her out for the affair in the entertainment media? Who asked her questions about the affair? I don’t really remember any time that she was asked about it (except for maybe now), but Rob was the one who had deal with it. It was David Letterman who kept making allusions to it when he was promoting the last Twilight movie–saying he should keep his chin up. That’s f-cking embarrassing.

And Kristen ruined any goodwill I had for her, when at some film festival, when a reporter asked her if she and Rob were back together….and she said ‘I like to keep ’em guessing’…girl, no.

Basically–I’m not gonna feel sorry for her. She brought it all on herself. She released a half assed ‘apology’, and then played coy about their relationship afterwards. I’m not saying go all ‘Italian Widow’ on people–but show some respect. I don’t feel like she showed Rob any respect–especially since he pretended to be with her for quite a few months afterwards.

    • CTgirl says:

She didn’t get the crappy end of the stick. Was she the more famous of Butch Stew and the Sundance Rupert? Yep. So she’s generally who people talked about but Rupert got hit with the same stick when people remembered who he is. KS was her own worst enemy during that time and still is; she made a sad public apology, she came off as insufferable (still does with her talk of having absolutely no regrets), she’s frequently sullen, the video of her telling paps that they have no right to breathe the same air as her, her inability to form a coherent sentence and her generally surly personality.

    • Josephine says:

I don’t think it was just the affair She is so horribly arrogant and always, always insulted other actors and accused them of being sell-outs and fake right before she accepted her own slew of ad campaigns. I don’t care about who she sleeps with, but her arrogance and ignorance make her so unattractive.

    • Miss Bennett says:

Young girl? She was a 22 year old woman who should have known better. No excuses.

  10. Size Does Matter says:

Here I was preparing my comment in my head about how it must be a bad translation because I couldn’t understand a word about what she said regarding meeting the director, but I guess not.

  11. CTgirl says:

Sigh. Same old, same old. Open mouth poses and an inability to use the her native tongue correctly. She really does need to drop out of movies for awhile and take some English and speech classes so that she can get through an interview without sounding like a nervous 12 year old. She comes across as so immature when she tries to express herself.

  12. Maria says:

still dont like her as a person or actress but she looks great on the cover.
also some foot fetishist bait. i wonder if magazines nowadays want more bare feet pictures because they know of the demand and the possible higher reach because of that.

  13. Judy says:

    My goodness, she is gorgeous.

  14. Tig says:

This selection of quotes is actually quite kind- it’s reported other places, and she’s right back in the “I’m the true artiste” mode. I was waiting for the translation issues excuse to surface. In any event, the clothes are pretty.

  15. Val says:

    WHY!!!

  16. bns says:

    Yuck.

  17. Marty says:

Her personality aside(which is stil meh), this photoshoot is absolutely stunning. Probably one of her best ever.

  18. Ivy says:

She seems to be a very strange person. But she’s very good in “Sils”, she’s actually the best thing of the movie. And she’s beautiful.

  19. Miss Bennett says:

Nope. She still has her head wedged up her own ass.
