Jennifer Lopez was 5 hours late to a music video shoot: diva or standard?

Beyond the Mariah Carey comparisons, I’ve heard some people say that Ariana Grande is trying to be like Jennifer Lopez and do the whole big-haired diva thing. My thought was always “But Jennifer Lopez has a reputation for being relatively pleasant to work with?” I mean, obviously, J.Lo is a handful and she rolls with a huge entourage, but from what I’ve heard, she’s usually on time and she aims for standard professionalism. Unlike Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey, both of whom seem to be competing to see who can be the bigger jackass to the press and to their fans. But! The NY Daily News says that Jennifer Lopez was recently LATE to film a music video with Fat Joe. Like, five hours late. And that’s not all:

Confidenti@l has learned that Jennifer Lopez held up production on a video shoot because she arrived on the set five hours late. We’re told that the shoot for “Stressin’,” her latest collaboration with fellow Bronx native Fat Joe, was scheduled to take place in two locations, with Lopez filming her part at the Griffin nightclub in the Meatpacking District before the rest of the team moved on to the Don Coqui Puerto Rican restaurant in the Bronx. But on-set sources tell us that the singer arrived so late that the second part of the production didn’t begin until an hour before it was scheduled to end.

“(Lopez) was supposed to show up at the shoot at the Griffin at 9 a.m.,” says our insider, “but she didn’t actually arrive until 2 p.m. They were supposed to be at the Bronx location by 5 p.m., and they didn’t make it up there until 9 p.m. By the time they were at the Bronx location, Fat Joe was pretty mad. I don’t know if he was specifically mad about Jennifer, but the time crunch made everything more stressful,” said our insider.

“The crew were saying they were tired because they’d got up so early to start at the Griffin, and then they didn’t get finished until about 1.30 a.m.,” the source added. “Everything was supposed to be finished by 10 p.m.”

To make matters worse, we’re told, the lavish shoot — which features a large cast of extras dancing as Lopez sings from the top of a banquette — is Fat Joe’s “most expensive video ever.”

Of course, the singer has long been accused of being a diva. Earlier this year, Rosie Perez, who was Lopez’s choreographer on “In Living Color,” wrote in her memoir “Handbook For An Unpredictable Life” that dancers on the show had complained that “(Lopez) was manipulating wardrobe, makeup, and (Perez), all to her advantage.”

Last year, model Chrissy Teigen ranted on Twitter about being hassled by Lopez’s aides while backstage watching her husband, John Legend. “I love Jennifer Lopez,” she wrote. “But as I am sitting and watching John perform, I don’t need her people to lay down the j-lo laws … I have never once been asked to leave an area for an artist’s supreme arrival.” A rep for Lopez declined to comment.

[From The NY Daily News]

Has J.Lo changed or was this what she was always like and she just used to be better at PR? I can’t tell. Y’all know I’m a J.Lo apologist and it will piss me off so much if she goes full Mariah/Ariana. I can’t stand when people are late, but I’m one of those compulsively-early people, so much so that it borders on rude. That’s my cross to bear!

She’s always been like this. Always.

  2. Chocolate bunny says:

She has always been a diva!

  3. Birdie says:

5 hours, wow. Why even show up then?

  4. Erinn says:

I can’t HANDLE people being late. I’m one of those people who gets really anxious if I think I’m going to be even 10 minutes late for anything. Unless some kind of uncontrollable circumstance happens, it’s just down right disrespectful.

    • Ryan says:

Totally agree. It really bothers me. My time is valuable and I respect other’s time too!

    • Victoria1 says:

I broke up with a friend because she pulled this crap, always waiting for her to get ready and once showing up 2 hours late to something and not even calling/texting. She wasn’t even sorry. It just screams irresponsibility and entitlement.

      • Erinn says:

We have a set of friends that are always running about a half hour later than the rest of us. If we want to hang out, we’ll say “hey, if you want to meet at our place at 7, that’d work best” and it’ll be 7:40 or so before we see them. And they live about 5 minutes away.

There was one time that we were all waiting to go out to eat, and they showed up like an hour late at our friends house, then wanted to go somewhere completely different. So we indulge them, and go. And the cook had gone home for the night. So we wasted all the time going to this stupid place just to end up where we wanted to go in the first place. they drive me nuts. Luckily, lately they’re either too busy to hang out, or we just show up at their place and avoid the situation all together.

    • Diane says:

Agree. That is my pet peeve. People who are consistently late just illustrate how little respect they have for the people who are left waiting, It’s a purely selfish act.

  5. Rubber Ducky says:

In other breaking news, water is wet.

  6. Loopy says:

Lol yes she has always been a diva remember she used to want everywhere she went to be painted white and have white kittens etc However i thought she might have changed in recent times, I mean she seems so likeable on American Idol.

    • msw says:

Yes! A few friends of mine bad the misfortune of crossing her path on a USO tour about ten years ago. She refused to stay at the general’s hotel suite because it wasn’t white enough. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson had no problem with it…

      • Abbott says:

msw I think I heard the same story. She stayed a few hours away at a luxury hotel and then wouldn’t perform until someone went back and got her favorite hairbrush. The hairbrush was hours away at the hotel.

      • msw says:

Hah, I didn’t hear about the brush, but I do know for a fact she rejected the hotel on the premise of it not being white enough and made everything a pain in the ass for everyone by insisting she stay someplace else far away. It was a show for the troops, for Chrissakes, not a trip to placate her whims and ego. I worked for the sister hotel at the time. We all knew each other. That story was upsetting. Plenty of celebs and other people who are way more important than celebs stayed in that suite with no complaints (Hillary and Chelsea Clinton and a number of extremely highly ranked generals–hell, even I stayed there on my wedding night and was more than happy with the place). Its not a five star penthouse suite, but it is certainly nice, and to be so rude and ungracious was really off putting. She totally forgot what she was there for. J Lo is a nasty egomaniac whose main goal in life is to claim as much fame, status and money as possible (see performing for dictators to the tune of a few million dollars).

  7. msw says:

Only a completely self centered person would think it’s okay to have a crew wait for you like that. I won’t even call it diva behavior, that is just straight up a-hole.

The planet some people live on…. No one is doing them any favors by tolerating bs like this.

  8. Nikki says:

It’s a TERRIBLE headache for production folks when someone’s late like this; my son recently got into this business, and I had no idea the number of people who have to go crazy to accomodate a late star. Everyone has to be paid, fed, transportation rescheduled, and any permits for outdoor shooting or any indoor shooting contract renegotiated; and this was a TWO location shoot. It’s incredibly rude!!

  9. truthful says:

she’s always been like this, I am wondering why it was not scheduled later anyway–she probably prefers night times anyway.

maybe Joe wanted a 9am call but I even I know not to call that for JLO

  10. lower-case deb says:

the picture you chose for the front page, i honestly thought someone has crossed Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea. why JLo wants to look like a Poprap Tart is beyond me

  11. CandyKay says:

Maybe she thought she looked bad and they needed time to fix her up to her specifications.

The older you are, the more maintenance and lighting you require.

    • Kiddo says:

      5 hours worth?

    • msw says:

I don’t know if you are making apologies for her or not, but if she does need five extra hours of make up, she can wake her ass up early and do it, or schedule later in the day. There is no excuse to show up five hours late to work, especially in a business where timing is so important to the success of the entire production and the well being of a huge crew. Even if you are J Lo.

  12. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

It looks like J-Lo needs some J-Laws because that is just A-Low Vera.

  13. Nicolette says:

She absolutely comes across as a celeb who wants the seas to part as she arrives, will not tolerate the masses making eye contact with her, and could care less about anyone else’s schedule.

  14. Jayna says:

She’s a professional and a hard worker. She has a strong work ethic. This isn’t LIndsay Lohan habitual behavior, so a non-story to me. It’s a big hold-up and not fair to production, etc., but as far as I know, this isn’t the norm for her

  15. lucy2 says:

JLo does not have the talent to justify her being a diva, IMO.
But being 5 hours late and holding up a huge crew of people isn’t being a diva, it’s being an entitled jerk.

  16. Angie says:

Trying to look 22 when you’re 45 is alot of work people – give her a break! LOL

  17. SamiHami says:

It’s incredibly disrespectful of other peoples’ time. If there were a true emergency it would be forgivable, but to hold up production for 5 hours for no good reason? That’s not “diva” behavior. That’s thoughtless, rude and entitled behavior imho.

    • Kiki says:

Oh I agree with you on this one. It is rude and downright disrespectful to waste everyone time and money, if that was me, in lest than an one hour I would shut the whole thing down and tell whoever manages her that I don’t want to work with her anymore. But the real kicker of them all is J.Lo didn’t have the nerve to at least call first to tell everyone that she was late.

Not cool, Jennifer Lopez, not cool.

  18. Adrien says:

Is she still in the position to be this diva-ish?

  19. TWINK says:

Chrissy is so annoying! I’m glad she was asked to leave!

  20. whatsmyname? says:

5 hours? Seriously? There is an entire crew waiting and she straight up don’t give f*ck, it’s completely disrespectful she is messing with other peoples time and money not cool.

  21. Mingy says:

    UGH..The Bronx again? Seriously?!
Yes, we know, you’re still Jenny from the block..my eyes just rolled out..how am I typing?

  22. Mimz says:

I heard diva rumors back in the day but not as of late….
And yes I too am a Jlo apologist but… for a story like this to get out I dont think it’s the norm otherwise we would have heard many many times other (recent) stories such as this one.
I also think that the sources of this story might have made a point of not saying if maybe she was late because she missed a flight/had traffic /was feeling ill and actually made an effort to show up for her friend – Joe is one of her closest friends .
These tabloids and sources leave out the bits and pieces of things to make it a big story.
About the white room in hotel didn’t we agree in another post that celebs want white stuff on their buses and rooms and etc to ensure cleanliness and higiene?
I’m sorry if I had the money I would probably ask the same. Hotel rooms can be filthy with all sorts of unspeakable things ugh!

  23. Brionne says:

    Sometimes chronically late people are
Super disorganized adults with attention deficit disorders. I don’t know if that’s the case with JLo but it isn’t always a case of being selfish or entitled. There are people for whom organization and time management are huge battles that affect their self esteem

  24. tabasco says:

I dunno, I never understand people getting their panties in a twist over a friend being 10-15 minutes late to meet for drinks/dinner/whatever. Maybe they caught all the red lights. Who cares? I just sit there and have a glass of wine and enjoy the little slice of solitude. I find it off-putting when other people get all pissy over someone being late. Like, if you’re in a group and somebody is running 15 mins behind to get there. To me, somebody b*tching about somebody else running 15 mins late is way more obnoxious than the person who is late.

I mean, 5 hours, or leaving your people hanging for 30+ with no word, that’s a different story. But the person who is 15 or so late, even if it’s the person who is always 15 or so late? Maybe they hit traffic. Maybe their tights ripped and they had to change them at the last minute. Maybe they couldn’t get their mother off the phone as they were trying to leave the house. Maybe they’re one of those people who always misjudges how long it takes to get somewhere. Who the F cares. If you really think that person is being a terrible selfish disrespectful person, IMO you probably need to lighten up.

  25. Sea Dragon says:

I’m in that 15 minute “let it go” category as well. I don’t take it personally. As long as someone texts or calls to say they’re ruining late, it’s fine with me. There are too many other things in life to get upset about.

I’m not shocked at Jlo’s tardiness. She’s the center of the Universe, according to her. I remember when Michael Phelps has just won his eight gold metals and Jlo wondered allowed why the swimmer was getting more attention on Good Morning America than her triathlon training routine.

  26. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Let’s face it – she’s just an ugly person on the inside where it counts.

  27. Pager90 says:

1hr for a star would be understandable, things come up, wigs aren’t right, makeup not done right, dress or clothes not working, etc… but FIVE HOURS is just plain ridiculous and RUDE!!!!

I recall reading that Marilyn Monroe would be 3hrs late on set sometimes, because she was so wrought with insecurities…..

Maybe JLO was having some enjoyable downtime with Casper and his hips? 🙂

  28. Kimberly says:

It’s one thing to be 10, 15 or 30 minutes late or possibly an hour……but 5 hours????????!!!!!!!!!!
    She must be f***ing crazy.
Someone on set should of yanked her blonde weave out for that.

    I can’t believe I actually used to LOVE her….UGH!!!!
She has no respect for anyone’s time and money (those involved in this music video)

And she seems selfish………I bet that’s part of reason why her relationships never last and end on a bad note.

  29. TOPgirl says:

I’m sorry but looking at photos of JLO just makes me wonder if she ever gets tired of putting up the facade of trying so hard to look and act like a 20 year old in a 40 year old body. I mean, this woman seems to have an immature state of mind judging from her demeanor and behavior. I always believe that action speaks louder than words and her behavior just does not come off like a woman who is a mother and protective of her children. She’s like a Latina Jennifer Aniston living in the 90’s.
