Mindy Kaling on her breakup with BJ Novak: ‘I was miserable & so beautiful’

Here are some photos of Mindy Kaling out and about in NYC over the past few days. She’s been making the media rounds and hustling for The Mindy Project, which more people should be watching. She’s stopped by Watch What Happens Live, Today, the Howard Stern show and more. And she’s giving great quotes everywhere she goes. Last night, I listened to most of her Stern interview – go here to hear. Stern was really nice to her and he wants to find her a boyfriend. During the Stern piece, she also talked about dating BJ Novak back in the day and how he broke up with her, saying:

“He broke up with me. It was years ago that that breakup happened.” Mindy says she was “so sad” when they split. “Not angry, sad,” she said. “That was the hottest I’ve ever looked because I stopped eating. When I get depressed I stop eating. So I was so miserable and so beautiful. I remember waking up, barely getting out of bed and we worked together but I didn’t care. I had no makeup on…I was real miserable.”

Stern asked if Novak was the best sex she’s ever had. “It was pretty damn good,” Kaling admitted. “Real good. He’s a smart and funny guy.”

When asked if she would have married Novak if he proposed when they were together, she said, “At the time? Oh yeah. I was 24. For the record if anyone asked me to marry me I would have said yes.”

But there’s no bad blood between Kaling and Novak. They are still “best friends” and work together. “I love him, I think he’s a great person but I’m not holding a candle for B.J.” she dished.

[From E! News]

BJ has always been really nice about Mindy in the press, always talking about how cool, talented, smart and funny she is. It sort of sucks, because they are perfect for each other. Sigh.

When Mindy was on Watch What Happens Live, she also revealed that she was up for a role in Bridesmaids – she auditioned for the role that went to Maya Rudolph. Mindy told Andy Cohen that: “I practiced it so much and was so into it and I loved that whole cast. That was one that was a heartbreaker.” She also joked that she’s been offered “a lot of searing dramas, like 12 Years a Slave. I was like, ‘I can’t do it! Tell Lupita to do it. I don’t have the time.’ [Michael Fassbender] was mad. It was a thing.”

Mindy also has a great interview with Time Mag – she’s into Game of Thrones, she adores working with Chris Messina (they have so much chemistry), and she loves reading fan-fiction.

Mindy and I are BFF in an alternate reality.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Me too! I have loved her since I read her book, but oddly enough, I haven’t watched her show yet. I need to sit down with Netflix and make it happen.

If I dvr the new season, but don’t watch it for a while, that won’t help her with ratings, right? I really want to help with the ratings but I can’t handle seeing things out of order.

      • Mari says:

You absolutely must, must, must watcher her show! If you loved her book you will fall in love with the show.
A little Tuesday Tidbit: DVR ratings are factored into the overall program ratings as DVR/TiVo companies actually record and share viewing information with networks. Simply put, they are separate from Nielson ratings but still used to get advertising. So DVR away! :))

      • Tiffany :) says:

        Good to know, Mari! 😀

    • joan says:

These commenters who don’t like her — do they not understand anything she’s done? I think they react against her confidence without realizing she’s done things to be confident about.

      • Betty says:

I appreciate her accomplishments, but I find her portrayal of race on “The Mindy Project” problematic. She’s made a few comments about blacks I find offensive, and the black nurse on the show is really stereotypical. And while she can date whomever she wants, I do take issue with the fact that she’s singularly focused on white men as love interests. And I say that as a black woman in an interracial marriage.

      • Stephanie says:

I wholeheartedly agree, Betty! I want to like the show 100%, but whenever I see an episode where she is making stereotypes about blacks….I just go away from it for months. I have nothing against interracial couples. {I am in one, but have never focused on dating outside my race.} But, I also find it offensive that the only semi-regular black actor on the show is “a sassy girl from the block” who is dating a white guy who talk like he is trying to be black. What happened to her brother? I though I saw an episode with him that was very nice and well written.

    • Abby says:

Yes. I imagine we would be friends, if I lived in NYC and was cool IRL.

  2. krastins says:

awww man, why do I always learn about cute couples AFTER they break up?? 🙁

She’s a smart, funny, beautiful woman who I can’t get enough of, nuff said.

  3. mia girl says:

Mindy and BJ’s exchanges on Twitter are always entertaining.

  4. Erinn says:

    I just genuinely love Mindy.

  5. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Haha—“Michael Fassbender was mad.” God I love Mindy. And love that she’s got a thing for the Fass……

    • Erinn says:

Not sure if you watch Mindy Project, but there’s been a couple of instances where she’s wanted to work out and the guys help her with motivation by telling her things like “Michael Fassbender’s trapped in a well”

  6. Lexie says:

Love her. When is the show back on?

  7. AuroraO says:

I remember how thin she was during a season of The Office. I can’t believe it was because she stopped eating after being dumped by him. I know how it goes.

  8. Amy says:

They were such a low key couple, I remember wondering if they were an actual couple or just really good friends. I’m glad they are still good friends. Very few people realized they were actually together when they were on The Office.

  9. Tiffany27 says:

There’s something about her I don’t care for, but she’s a successful woc so good for her.

  10. BengalCat2000 says:

Had she been in Bridesmaids, I may have actually enjoyed that movie.
    Love her so much!

  11. AmeliaLynne says:

    Mindy Kaling reads fanfiction! Ahhh

  12. Breebree says:

I always want to like her, but something about her just annoys me. And everyone else adores her, so then I wonder why I don’t too!

    • jen says:

Same. Not sure what the big deal is about her.

    • Tapioca says:

It’s probably that you feel a bit traitorous not finding a plus-size Asian female comic – so many admirable boxes ticked – with her own show all that funny. I know I do.

I admire what she’s achieved and her refusal to conform – without playing the Lena Dunham “woe is me” trolling game – but I still find The Mindy Project about as hilarious as a pap smear with a frozen speculum.

      Or maybe it’s the SHOES!

    • RobN says:

I’m not a fan, either. I always feel like she’s begging for a compliment. Makes her seem kind of desperate for attention and that never feels very comfortable.

    • Elle says:

Same here. I want to like her, but she annoys me.

      • als says:

When I first saw an episode of The Mindy Project I immediately turned it off, I thought her voice was so sweet, it gave me diabetes. However, upon further research the lines are very smart and it is an excellent show. I still have a problem with such a sweet voice, but I think it actually fits the show.

  13. nicegirl says:

    Mindy is beautiful.

  14. Duckie says:

I love Mindy so much; she and BJ were the perfect couple! sigh

  15. TheCountess says:

I was just watching some old episodes of “The Office” (never watched it during its run) and I was struck by how skinny she was. It was referenced a few times (in particular, a throwaway comment about how she wasn’t eating more than a spoonful of something every day) but I was curious if there’d been a backstory to it.

    • Ag says:

i remember that, haha, her character was drinking water with lemons in it or something because she was obsessed with a weight loss challenge.

  16. Tassi says:

I was reluctant to start watching The Mindy Project because I usually don’t like sitcoms. But TMP is one of those shows where I catch myself laughing out loud. I have recommended it to several friends at work & they are all hooked (airplane scene – swoon!). Nothing but love for Mindy from this Canadian!

    • Detritus says:

Just rewatched that episode, sooooo good.
Actually and the Christmas one right before, anything with Messina dancing. Yum.

  17. emmie_a says:

I honestly don’t see or feel romantic chemistry w/her & Messina on the show. They always had more of a brother/sister vibe to me. I stopped watching when they got together. I liked all her past boyfriends on the show but not this one.

    • Petrichor says:

Interesting. I think she and Chris Messina have *amazing* chemistry on the show. I’ve only seen the first 2 seasons because that’s all we have so far on Canadian Netflix, but I’m so invested in their relationship!

But I could.not.stand Casey. His character was so…I don’t know. He changed quickly through his arc from someone who seemed grown up and serious about life to a loudmouth man-child with such manic energy I’d cringe every time he came on screen.

  18. J says:

I want to know MOAR about Mindy’s life. I hope she becomes a tabloid staple but I also don’t because I love her and want her to be well.

  19. BBB says:

She is so cute in her dressed-down look with the plaid shirt and skinny jeans. Her toe popping out of those heels is enraging me.

  20. Shahrizai says:

I love how she portrays herself so much! She seems grounded, cool, funny, and hard working. I want her show to succeed!!

  21. Veronica says:

The show doesn’t really grab me, but I’m happy for her. It’s good to see more POC women getting a foothold in the industry.

  22. khaveman says:

Love her. She is a beautiful person, inside and out — a true inspiration to what people should strive to be. Her interviews are great.

  23. Sarah says:

Love her so much. I can’t wait for S3 of her show tonight. Go Mindy!

  24. Bob Loblaw says:

I’m a fan, her show has been a little inconsistent but I do like the ensemble and I like her so I’ll stick with it.

  25. apsutter says:

Love. Her!! That is all 🙂
