George Clooney to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2015 Golden Globes

Why is George Clooney so needy for attention these days? Or is it not like that at all? I can’t make up my mind. It could be that George has just gotten to a point in his life where he’s just sitting back and letting the fame machine churn out stories and he doesn’t really care. Or it could be that he’s the man behind the curtain and he wants everyone paying attention to him. Which is it? Anyway, there are some new pieces of information about Clooney. First off, George is going to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at this year’s Golden Globes. Which means he’ll definitely be attending the Globes this year… with his new wife Amal Alamuddin.

Good things continue to happen to George Clooney. As the famous actor prepares to marry his “love” Amal Alamuddin in Venice, Italy, in the very near future, Theo Kingma, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), has announced that Clooney will be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the live telecast of the 2015 Golden Globes.

“The HFPA is honored to bestow the Cecil B. DeMille Award to George Clooney to celebrate his outstanding contributions both in front of and behind the camera,” Kingma stated.

Clooney’s achievements as a performer and a filmmaker have earned him 12 (!) Golden Globes in nine different categories. He is also being recognized for his humanitarian efforts, such as visiting drought-stricken Darfur, Africa to film the documentary Journey to Darfur, and being designated a U.N. Messenger of Peace, one of eight individuals chosen to advocate on behalf of the U.N. and its peacekeeping efforts, in 2008.

Recent recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award include Woody Allen, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Warren Beatty, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, Gene Hackman, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino and Barbra Streisand. The 2015 Golden Globes will air live on NBC on January 11.

[From E! News]

If you remember correctly, all of this current Clooney nonsense might have been instigated at the 2014 Golden Globes when Amy Poehler and Tina Fey made a funny joke at Clooney’s expense: Gravity “is the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.” That was the beginning of all of this. Because people laughed. And Clooney realized his personal life had become a joke. So, what will Tina & Amy have to say at the 2015 Globes? Ha.

Meanwhile, there are some reports coming out of Italy about the wedding. I’m not sure how much I believe all of this crap, but sure, let’s go through it. Let’s see… the ceremony will be performed by the former mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni. He’s Clooney’s bud, apparently, and many think Veltroni is Obama-esque. The wedding will go on for three days and the ceremony will be held at Ca’Farsetti. Guests will stay at the new luxury hotel, Hotel Aman. Sources say Amal will definitely wear Oscar de la Renta. And Lana del Rey will sing? Which sounds like a very Kimye touch. Allegedly, guests will include Bono, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Sandy Bullock and more.

    We’re gonna need a bigger (barf) boat…

I’m beginning to wonder if there is something faulty in my gossip gene because I’m not really as bothered by all this relationship stuff of Clooney’s. It’s public and showy, but it’s not giving my the upchucks.
Should I go see a Dr? I’m concerned.

      • Tulip Garden says:

It doesn’t bother me at all either! I am actually enjoying the journey. Can’t wait to see the wedding photos.

  2. Jaderu says:

Dawwwww Amal bought him an award as a wedding present.
    *wipes tear*

  3. aims says:

I still say that zing was one of the best ones I’ve ever heard. Brilliant.

    • als says:

      Agreed!
And George did say he’ll find a good one to get back at them!

      • angie says:

Do you think he’ll threaten privately to the producers of the GG that he won’t show up if Tina and Amy are the hosts? That would certainly get back at them, but it would also cost a lot of viewers. They’re the only reason I watch the show.

  4. Etheldreda says:

Isn’t 53 rather young to be receiving a ‘lifetime award’?

    • Jaderu says:

A great archaeologist once said “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage.”

    • Em says:

It’s on the younger side of average-ish for the Cecille B. Demille Award. There have been a few that were younger than him. Plus, Clooney practically was the first modern super star actor.

      • Etheldreda says:

I’m sure you’re right, but to me a ‘lifetime award’ should be for someone who’s retired or close to it, which certainly isn’t the case for Clooney. He could be in the business for another 2 decades or more, easily. Plus, he’s already received plenty of recognition, including 2 Oscars, so it seems a bit odd to me. Also, is it normal to announce this 4 months in advance?

    • noway says:

I think they did it to make sure he and his new wife showed up. God forbid the Hollywood Foreign Press plays to the audience. Also, it would be great to have another zinger from Amy and Tina on George. Can’t wait to hear their new angle.

Not saying he doesn’t or won’t deserve it, but I agree he is a bit early for this. They should have an age on this at least late fifties or already deceased.

    • badrockandroll says:

Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman and Robert de Niro are the most recent recipients, and they are all in the same ballpark age-wise and career-wise as Clooney. Clint Eastwood was 58 when he won it in 1988, just before he started directing in a serious way, but at about the time that his long time partner Sondra Locke was making all sorts of allegations against him as a serial womanizer , and abuser, and also at about the same time that it was revealed that while still with Locke, he had fathered two kids with someone else.
And I like that these awards go to people who are still alive and kicking – it makes me sad that people are nominated to Halls of Fame after they die.

      • noway says:

Poor George if you think he is in the same age group as DeNiro(71 ) and Morgan Freeman (77) (even when they won a couple of years earlier). Jodie is close to his age, but she was a child star. George is just 53 and essentially started his career in the mid to late eighties. Jodie, Deniro and Freeman all started their careers in the sixties. It is a lifetime achievement award for outstanding achievement in the entertainment industry. He is just a bit young to me, and although he has done some nice work, most who won it young were more ground breaking: Walt Disney, David Zanuck, Jodie Foster, Judy Garland, Sidney Poitier. Just an opinion.

They seem to only nominate living people, and it is sad when they get nominated after their death for these awards. That is why I think we should get some of the older folks now, and sorry I feel like this was a bit of ratings pull for the Golden Globes considering his wedding.

      • als says:

@noway – I think his latest shenanigans with ‘the love of his life’ is the ultimate proof of his outstanding achievement in the entertainment industry and outside of it. The award is well deserved.

  5. An says:

She’s very old school beautiful. Love her hair.

  6. frisbeejada says:

Oh so it’s going to be a showbiz wedding – with the emphasis on the ‘Show’ and the ‘Business’, I mean really,
    1) projectile vomit +
    2) bucket =
    3) Almalooney (my fave name for these two – congrats to whoever came up with it!)

  7. Pager90 says:

Wow, Last years Big Golden Globes joke about Clooney, really did a number on him.
His PR people sure have been working hard since that Joke went round the world. His ego sure seems to need a lot of soothing.

This way he can return to the Golden globes and stand and be lauded , with his Cecil B. D… Award and his new wife as a married man of substance.

P.S. What’s with Daily Mail all George comments are heavily moderated. I noticed JLAW’s aren’t, and she just went through a big drama, with stolen photos, I’m just wondering why they are afraid to let the public comments through somewhat unfiltered on George?

  8. GiGi says:

WTH is going on here? Is Clooney dying? Is he terminal? I feel like he’s trying to pack in as much as he can, as quickly as he can… it’s freaking me out.

    • Etheldreda says:

I know, it’s weird, isn’t it? He acheived so much success, including 2 Oscars and went from being a medical soap opera hunk to a respected A list actor and producer, without any of this PR malarkey (at least not overtly.) Now, it’s in our faces non-stop. What’s going on?

    • Santolina says:

      Yes, why the desperate urgency?

  9. Hawkeye says:

Tom Cruise in love jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch was more believable than George Clooney in this relationship. I was actually a fan of the Clooney who had casual C and D list girlfriends because I believed that’s who he was and he wasn’t ashamed of it. I get the impression that he found himself a Serious Person to marry out of insecurity, especially because of the teasing at the Globes.

  10. Kim1 says:

So Amy and Tina makes a joke about him only dating younger women and he will bring his new wife who is sixteen years younger than him? Oh yeah he was really affected by the joke.He is marrying a woman he was already dating months before the joke
Congrats George for meeting your soulmate a year ago.

  11. Patricia says:

What a joke. This guy has not made “an incredible impact” on the entertainment industry. He is not a good actor and the films he has produced are nothing special. No wonder these actors are so full of themselves. And George has aged 5 years since announcing his engagement. I think his body is speaking for his true state of mind – I think the purpose of this wedding is purely for the PR. Men in love are supposed to look better, younger and more vibrant. Not rapidly aged like he has. This Amal woman is sucking the life out of him. George does not look 53. More like 65 or older. I agree with the article – he and his people realised that he’d become a joke at the Golden Globes and Voila – sudden image change and instant wife. Problem solved. Watch him sellout and sell his wedding pictures to People and Hello Magazine. He wants the PR. Even if he claims to donate the money from the pics to charity he will get an equivalent tax deduction which I suspect he needs. He’s trying very hard to sell the image of a man in love. It would have been believable if she was better looking and he’d dated her for longer. But his race to the altar has been too fast and way too public with staged photos released by his PR people of the “love story” every step of the way. He seems desperate to get to the altar like his life depends on it after slamming marriage for 16 years. Something smells and it’s George Clooney’s image makeover. So sick of this guy and would never pay to see any of his movies especially after these PR antics. He thinks we’re stupid.

    • Santolina says:

Well said, and I’m sure it’s true that he wants an image makeover but the frantic hurry suggests something more like fear. A health issue? A threat to reveal his secrets? Money problems? The IRS? It just seems like more than pure vanity is operating and he’s running scared.

    • Ruyana says:

Agree. I’ve been over George for a long, long time. This stunt isn’t helping him.

    • frisbeejada says:

Yeah, ITA I still think there’s a job/public office that he want’s and he’s been told he needs to clean up his image and pose as a happily married man to get a shot at it but time will tell, as Santolina said he may be trying to avoid an expose and is racing against time. Whatever it is he’s up to something and he and his PR must think we are all terminally thick to get taken in by this nonsense.

    • Greata says:

      This!!!

  12. Bubulle says:

Nothing he has done is truly outstanding , feels like the GG are back in full star effing mode.

    • Etheldreda says:

Yeah I agree. He’s done some solid work as both a producer/director and actor – though imho he plays the same role over and over again – but he’s hardly changed the face of cinema or anything. Will anyone be talking about ”The Descendants” or ”Argo’ in 5O, or even 15, years time? I doubt it.

And yes, the sudden PR offensive is strange. Why now, when he’s firmly established as a star? I don’t want to sound all conspiratorial, but you really do have to wonder if something is up.

      • Bubulle says:

You nailed it he made some solid work, but seriously he doesn’t hold a candle to past recipients like De Niro, Spielberg, Scorsese and Eastwood to name a few.

  13. Steph says:

I really don’t get the clooney hype and I feel like awarding this prestigious award to a mediocre actor lowers the award’s value. Clooney is an okay actor but not great like an Anthony Hopkins or an Eastwood.

  14. hmmm says:

I understand that the Hollywood Foreign Press is completely corrupt and anyone can buy an award. Sounds like George greased their palms mightily, with a Master Plan in mind.

  15. Side-eye says:

    I’ll let Tina say it:
    http://gph.is/16HHjYi

  16. siri says:

Well, this award is bestowed to someone who has provided “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” So George is indeed a worthy recipient, since his showbiz engagement & expected wedding spectacle, as well as all his former ‘colaborations’, were highly entertaining, at least to some. There’s your next joke, Tina &Amy! Seriously, I don’t think it’s very much related to age, but I simply can’t see him in a line with people like Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Jodie Foster. Not as an actor, and not as a director, and except for “Gravity”, none of his latest efforts made a lot of profit. And with ‘Gravity’, the success was mostly about the direction of this movie. So there must be some hidden agenda here. Is Clooney pulling some strings? He ALWAYS does. He’s a player at heart.

  17. Kim1 says:

If George was going to get married because of a health issue or scandal he could have gotten married months ago.

    • siri says:

Not really, if he doesn’t introduce the woman to the public for a while, creating a ‘successful profile’ for her as well, the wariness would be even bigger than it is now.

      • Pager90 says:

Just five or six months ago George was in LAS VEGAS partying with friends, getting drunk and having public fights with Steve Wynn, to the point where the other guests were said to cringeing at his behavior. He certainly wasn’t behaving like a man with a supposed soulmate.
Then he was having public fights in the press with Steve Wynn.

The article is right here on Celebitchy.

      • Bubulle says:

I can see him passing out drunk on his wedding night.

  18. Lux says:

How the hell is Clooney getting the Cecil B. DeMill award before Meryl Streep!?

  19. Kimberly says:

They are giving him this award only because politics is involved.
IMO he does not deserve it.
