Amal Alamuddin’s parents are ‘paying for most of the wedding’: really?

wenn21688075

Ever since George Clooney proposed to Amal Alamuddin, her family has been invading his life. I say this like it’s a bad thing, when really it just makes me happy. Amal has a sister and two half-brothers, plus both of her parents are living and very involved with her life. Clooney invited the whole Alamuddin clan to Italy, where they’ve been yachting and hanging out at Clooney’s Lake Como mansion. It’s been said before that Amal’s mother has been helping Amal plan the wedding, and it’s also been said that George is turning into something of a bridezilla with all of the wedding details. But now sources claim that Amal’s family has been pulling the strings all along, because they’re the ones paying for it!

Amore — from the Alamuddins! Us Weekly has learned who’s footing the bill for George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s highly-anticipated wedding in Venice, Italy, and it turns out it’s not the two-time Oscar winner.

“Crazy enough,” a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly, “her family is paying for most of it!”

As previously reported by Us, the bride’s parents also had a say in when the wedding would take place. Like Clooney, Ramzi and Baria Alamuddin were anxious to have the nuptials this fall. An insider told Us shortly after the couple’s engagement that the Lebanon-born beauty’s mom and dad were “old-fashioned when it comes to these things.”

Alamuddin’s mother, Baria, is an editor at Lebanese newspaper Al Hayat. She’s previously interviewed foreign leaders on TV, including Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. Amal’s father, Ramzi, is a retired business professor who taught at the Beirut branch campus of American University.

The first source adds that the future spouses are currently putting the final touches on their upcoming Sept. 27 wedding in the Floating City. “It’s all very classy,” the insider says of the black-tie affair.

[From Us Weekly]

Do you believe this? Do you believe a retired professor and a newspaper editor can afford a pricey and Hollywood-style wedding in Italy? I don’t believe it. I’ll believe the Alamuddins are helping out where they can, like buying Amal’s wedding gown and offering to, like, pay for the flowers or whatever. But the details about the wedding are just too Clooney – I think he’s paying for a lot of it. Oh, and “sources” are still saying that Tala Alamuddin, Amal’s younger sister, is going to be Amal’s maid of honor. What do you want to bet that the sisters are fighting over the maid of honor’s dress? Because this is Tala’s style.

Last thing – Rande Gerber was photographed loading cases of tequila onto a plane, so now everyone’s like “George is going to have 100 cases of tequila at this wedding.” Ew, I could not do tequila at a fancy wedding. Tequila is one of those “only when I was young” liquors. If I tried to do a tequila shot right now, I would vom.

Maybe it’s true, in some cultures the parents feel strongly about paying for their daughters wedding, maybe the WHOLE family is chipping in.

    • Mean Hannah says:

If her family is anything like all the Lebanese families I know, I absolutely believe that they are paying for the whole wedding. It’d be a point of pride and honor for them, and they’d do it even if they had to take out a loan.

      • K says:

Yeah, I was going to say this. I have a friend whose parents are Pakistani and she tells me weddings involve hundreds of people, and her parents aren’t rich. It’s just what you do. I can imagine that parents from successful backgrounds would save and save for their daughters’ weddings over the years, and would absolutely not want the groom to pay. And my understanding is that Middle Eastern cultures are pretty similar. Hospitality is a huge point of honour.

It’s also worth remembering something Sting said about his own wedding – that it cost them almost nothing, because when you’re rich and high profile, people fall over themselves to give you stuff. So I would imagine suppliers are competing to be involved with this wedding because the publicity will be off the scale. That should reduce costs considerably.

      • Belle Epoch says:

There are HUGE cultural differences here that Clooney seems eager to gloss over. This may have contributed to his hissy fit with the Daily Mail. Where did I read the brothers were joking about cutting his d*ck off? I really wonder how this will play out. He doesn’t seem to realize he is marrying the whole family – and they will be watching him like a hawk.

      • Ava says:

Not in Italy they don’t that’s a pure American thing to comp rich people their sh*t, especially the venue and businesses they’ll be using most of their clients are rich and famous.

No way is this family paying for the wedding , just private plane to and from and hotel for guests will be a couple hundred thousand , then there’s the reception, another couple hundred thousand …..

Wedding are so expense in Italy that they have then on everyday of the week I’ve been to weeding on Monday , Wednesday and the keep the guests to that only immediate family ( first cousins) and close friends because it’s too expensive.
Middle class family nice reception at least $250 a head, that’s just for food for your guests.

    • Audrey says:

      Yup

In some cultures, a family would rather take out loans etc than not pay for the wedding

Though they may get discounts and freebies based on the couple getting hitched lol.

They may want to pay, but the Lebanese i know will also push hard for a great deal

      • K says:

Or what you said. (I just commented, literally above you, and said what you did so beautifully concisely in about 5 times more words!)

    • Etheldreda says:

In my experience of living in the Middle East, it is always the groom’s father who pay for the wedding. In fact, people were shocked when I told them that in most European countries, it’s usually the bride’s parents who pay. That said, it’s possible that the Lebanese, and/or the Druze, have different traditions.

      • Deniz says:

This is true. My parents are both Turkish and my Father still has trouble accepting that it’s the daughter’s side that pays for the wedding in American Culture. Guess it’s going to be a cheap wedding for me! Hah!

    • Tincy says:

In American cultures, the parents of the bride usually pay as well.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

What will they be serving us at the reception?

  3. Luca26 says:

I can’t do cheap tequila but high quality tequila is lovely in small doses.

    • CL says:

Don’t George and Rande own a tequila company? I’m sure it’s whatever fancy tequila they’re hawking. Gross tequila, fancy tequila – it’s all the same after several shots!

ETA: from the tequila’s website: “George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman bring you Casamigos, a small batch, ultra premium tequila made from the finest, hand-selected 100% Blue Weber agaves, grown in the rich red clay and cool climate of the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.”

    • Ange says:

It absolutely is. I happened completely by accident upon this tequila once that I took to my friend’s house for margaritas. It was so smooth you could drink it straight, just lovely.

  4. NewWester says:

Tequila ? I agree with you Kaiser. Just typing the word gives me the dry heaves. Too many bad memories from college

  5. Sixer says:

I think the Alamuddins are among the great and the good of Lebanese society. I should imagine they have PLENTY of money. They are upper class people, you know? (Not that I’m making any value judgement on wealth or pedigree – but it does exist in Lebanon. And you find that wealth and pedigree is commonly found among ex-pats. London is chock full of rich people from that region).

    • TX says:

Also, Im certain they are getting heavy discounts for everything. The hotels are happy to give away services/food/booze/whatever for the publicity this will bring them.

  6. MrsBPitt says:

I am so NOT into this wedding, for some reason….I always thought, if someone bagged this perpetual bachelor, my gossip tingly senses would be firing on all cylinders….but, yeah, not so much….yawn…

    • HH says:

I’m with you. I think it’s because it’s not “gossip” if it’s spoonfed to you. I wish George was more low key about it. You can’t get excited when someone is shoving it down your face. Also, in my case, I’m not the biggest Clooney fan, but finding out he was engaged was a big deal. Naturally, I wanted to know more about the lady that he was excited to marry. But, I’m not really feeling Amal. She’s accomplished, but personally, something about her is a turn off.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Exactly. It’s like every wedding detail is rolled out as a big PR announcement. It’s not fun or entertaining, it’s just annoying as hell.

    • Coco says:

      Yes MrsBpitt ITA.

If it was actually a n

    • Coco says:

      Yes MrsBpitt ITA.

If it was actually a normalish engagement
And not couch jumping it would be good.

Also why does she do that with her arms, elbows behind her back?

  7. Jen2 says:

I want to believe in Amalooney, and hope that all these “sources” are just made up like most tabloid stories. Why talk to the tabloids so much? US Weekly and before the blow up, the Daily Mail. Is it her family or his trying to one up the other? But I don’t doubt her family wants to pay, it could be a matter of pride, but to me, the bride and groom should pay, but it is their choice.

The same wedding singer as West/KK? And a paparazzi just happened to be at the airport to photograph the tequila shipment. A private plane for the booze just seems a bit much especially for a wedding in a country known for excellent wine. This is starting to look more like the “other Italian wedding” than it should. Mr. “all about my privacy” is so very public about this event. Hopefully, it all works out.

  8. als says:

I know some cultures where parents pay for the wedding, however, they generally get involved when the bride and groom are very young and don’t have enough resources. When we’re talking about two professionals, like George and Amal, this is a little bit exaggerated.

    • jane16 says:

      This ^

    • noway says:

Am I the only one who thinks this wedding rollout seems like it is two very young people and not a late thirties and a fifty year old man’s second wedding. Maybe that is part of it to make him seem younger.

  9. Talie says:

Um, I think her family is loaded. Just because they don’t have high paying jobs doesn’t mean they didn’t inherit. I think they’re society people.

    • Hally says:

Yep. They have $. I’m sure they are insisting on paying for part of this wedding or celebrations before or after. In Amal’s culture the bride’s family hosts the engagement party, and then the wedding is paid for by both families, with the grooms family usually expected to pay more as nowadays they usually host a dinner party after all the daytime celebrations. But this isn’t a traditional wedding anyways, so anything is possible. But yeah, the alamuddins aren’t hurting for $.

  10. lisa says:

does her mother wear her feather visor and lace jogging pants when she interviews these heads of state? that would be way more interesting than this wedding

  11. DanaG says:

By paying they have ensured George married Amal fast and has no time to change his mind. Hope he knows he will be marrying Amal AND her family who will expect alot! So much for having the boys around at vacation time. It seems very important to the Alamuddins that people know that George is marrying up to a smart, rich well connected woman and George well he comes across as dumb, tight and low class. All the stories are coming from her side I love how they keep trying to make Amal into some sort of fashionista her and her sisters skipped the style gene unless it’s something simple and classic. I can’t wait for this wedding to be over then we will get all the they are on the rocks stories. I predict a very short honeymoon for them and the press.

  12. bettyrose says:

I think Clooney loves this. Deep down he truly believes in traditional gender roles. His wife’s family has the perfect blend of modern and traditional values to make him feel like the man he’s desperate to prove he is.

  13. Annika says:

    George.is.so.weird.
    Also, I love tequila.

  14. Maws says:

In most Arabic families, regardless of the couple’s age and financial status, the parents will fund the wedding celebrations. It’s a culture thing as combination of responsibility and pride and often budgeted for years in advance. It’s also seen as a sign that the family completely support the union. Amal’s family are very well off, I have no doubt that they have the resources for a huge Hollywood style affair regardless of who she would’ve married. I wonder if Clooney is interested in following traditional wedding customs to a degree– for all you jewelry lovers this means that the man gifts his bride with a complete jewellry set (shabka) complete with a necklace, matching earrings, and either a bracelet or a watch…and maybe another ring usually given the morning after the wedding celebrations

    • Chris2 says:

Amal, though Lebanese, is not identifiably ‘Arabic’ as far as her upbringing/culture’s concerned is she? (real question)
Whatever….I thought it was a general thing throughout Europe at least, that the bride’s family pay for the wedding.
(But sometimes one gets a feeling her family are suspected of nomadic tent-dwelling, with a fondess for unusual amuses-bouche. Cos they are from Foreignland (copyright:D. Fail)

    • Sixer says:

Chris – I do think there’s a degree of that going on with this wedding. As a Londoner for most of my life, and as an alumnus of a London public (we Brits mean private by that, American friends) school, I’m used to the idea of wealthy socialite ex-pats with ME heritage. There are LOADS here. Some even own Harrods, don’t they?!

  15. merski says:

And yet there is something about her that just looks cheap…. Maybe it’s the hair extensions….

  16. Sister Carrie says:

OT, but I appreciate the photo of the back of her dress. I like the design in the back, except for her odd my-elbows-are-connected-by-a-string pose. Seriously, her elbows are almost touching behind her back.

  17. George's Piggy says:

Wow, what a load of crap! This wedding is a costly farce. Its theatre. And soon, we’ll know WHY.

  18. Miss M says:

    *one more bucket, please* 🙂

  19. Jewbitch says:

I think she is unique looking.

  20. Tiffany27 says:

Last time I did tequila shots I woke up in a parking lot. No thank you!

    • mimif says:

Bahaha like on the pavement or in your car, or….?

      • Chris2 says:

        Hahaha!
Er…..in a town at least familiar to you, we hope…..

      • Tiffany27 says:

Pavement due to a series of poor choices. NEVER AGAIN. NEVER.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Last time I did tequila shots, I ended up throwing up on myself, and then out of the window of a friend’s car. I ruined my faux fur sparkly Tommy Hilfiger coat for good (tequila and burger puke is the hardest barf to remove).
        Please don’t judge…it was 2001….

    • mia girl says:

I once won a Tequila limbo contest.
And my prize?… a case of Tequila.
      Never again.

  21. Hello Catty says:

Let face it – bulk buying tequila for your wedding means you want a cost effective way to get your guests happily drunk – fast. Classy for an millionaire like Georgie boy…

    • Jen2 says:

Actually, he co-owns the brand with Garber, so it is REALLY CHEAP, as in free!! The cost is the fortune he spent on the private jet to transport it!

      • Emmet says:

and let’s not forget the free publicity TMZ gave the boys for their swill, showing the plane being loaded

OK, internet commentators, how are they allowed to import that much booze to a foreign country?

  22. Bubulle says:

Please they are not gonna pay much for the wedding, most of it is gonna get sponsored Kardashian’s style, from Gerber/Clooney’s tequilla to George’s Armani suit and Amal’s Alexander Mac Queen wedding dress and of course the whole thing is gonna get cover by Vogue to get even more publicity.

  23. Dari says:

I thought the tequila was for George, so he can forget this marriage. I’m tired of hearing the full story will come out soon, soon is here

  24. maddelina says:

I have a hard time believing he’s 53. He appears much older to me.

  25. Veronica says:

I suspect this is more of a class pride/cultural issue. This woman is an international human rights lawyer. Even retired, her family probably has a fair amount of money to bat around. This is more about Keeping Up with the Jones to me – i.e. “we’re so rich that we don’t need the celebrity to pay.” Whether it’s entirely true or not is a different issue.

Tequila is…a weird choice, but I get that it’s a hate it or love it drink. I can’t stand it, but it’s my best friend’s liquor of choice.

  26. emma says:

margaritas are nice though—especially hanging out on a lake/yacht

  27. jane16 says:

George should have eloped like in that commercial he did for a Scandinavian bank (love that commercial). Its hard to imagine him being into all this folderol. Amal looks very pretty in these pix but her arms are really awkward, and not just the one with her arms glued to her back. I don’t know if I believe that her parents are paying for everything. There has been a lot of false rumors about this wedding. People keep saying that her parents are rich…how do we know that?

  28. Layla says:

This story the Alamuddins were not paying for this wedding, followed extensive post by people saying George Clooney could not walk out or cancel this wedding, because of the huge financial input from his inlaws to be. Fine, they (The Alamuddins) had no problem with the story of paying for it all, when that story first circulated 5 or so weeks ago. Only this week the posts about a possible change of heart by George, and a run out on the expensively paid for wedding, was countered by a celebrity site reporting he is definitely paying for the LOT. George, if he does decide to walk away will have lost a great deal of money, but garnered much respect. He jumped in too quick, too deep, and this was encouraged by the family. No shame in saying “Sorry I made a mistake”.
Much kudos has been afforded Rory Mcilroy, who did exactly the same earlier this year, and went on to have a very good summer career wise. Strangely, Rory and George though born many years apart share birthdays within a day or so of each other. The Bull can charge, at a moments notice.

  29. Anon says:

Actually that flight with Randy went to Arizona…. Also this morning PR came out and said George is paying for the wedding totally

  30. siri says:

George WILL pay anyway- for the rest of his life 🙂

  31. Side-eye says:

I like George and Amal seems lovely and accomplished. The issue I keep coming back to related to all of these stories is this: I believe that often celebrity gossip serves as a form of advertising–my opinion. Every time a person, business, product or idea is name-checked in stories from unnamed “sources”, they/it are receiving publicity, whether the story itself is true or not. Nothing new, I know, and not all advertising is “bad”. For example, George used the coverage by the Daily Mail to make a case against provocation of religious differences and the danger of acceptance of gossip as fact when it’s repeated out of context by mainstream media. I agree with his statements on those points.

My hope is that the public will retain those more positive messages and also maybe a bit more skepticism in that a gossip item could sometimes just be a commercial in another form. Does it mean I’ll stop reading it? Probably not, but hopefully I’ll do so from a more objective viewpoint.

  32. aqua says:

Gossip Cop is reporting that this story is untrue and that George is more than willing to pay for his own wedding and is not burdening his future mother in law or future father in law with the expense.

  33. Melanie says:

George’s behaviour and attention seeking for this engagement and wedding is really out of character and an obvious PR stunt akin to Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah’s couch. He hardly knows this woman – anyone can see it is a PR move. And old George is going to increasingly bizarre lengths to try and convince the world that he really is into her – his latest public declaration that he can’t wait to get married and be her husband are his latest attempt to persuade a skeptical public. No surprises that his PR people recorded this little speech and released it to all the media outlets. This after he has spent the last 16 years denigrating and slamming marriage in the media. His sudden desperation to get married is like a religious conversion. If she were better looking and they had been going out for longer it would be believable, as it is no one is buying this sudden “love story” with all the leaked photos along the way including those close ups of the engagement ring and the laughable safari photos. Sad that old George has had to resort to this desperate stuff just because he was the butt of jokes at last years Golden Globes and wants to reshape his image.

    • siri says:

To be fair, George never ‘slammed’ marriage. He just said it wasn’t for him, that he wasn’t good at it. However, I agree that this whole PR craze is meant to convince the public that he’s a changed man. If he WAS, he wouldn’t need all those leaked pics, all the constantly repeated details about Amals ‘achievements’ ,and how much she was his equal. He also wouldn’t engage in a sort of showbiz wedding. All these seemingly controversial informations about who is gonna pay for the wedding, what designer is doing the outfits etc. are simply meant to keep them in the news. And it’s quite obvious, how much Amal, and even more so her mother, enjoy the attention. People in love don’t walk around telling everybody how in love they are. They simply ARE, and nobody would doubt it.
