Reese Witherspoon covers Vogue: ‘I’m a complex human being’

reese vogue

It took forever and a day for Vogue to release their October cover! Reese Witherspoon is October’s cover girl, and she’s supporting her many projects coming out over the next few months. There’s Good Girl, which she produced. Then there’s The Good Lie, Inherent Vice and Wild, all of which could conceivably be awards contenders. I think Reese and her team are going to make the biggest push for Wild, for a Best Actress nomination. I’m not sure how I feel about that other than… lord, I hope Amy Adams or Julianne Moore win this year. Anyway, you can read the Vogue piece online here and you can see the photoshoot here. Some highlights:

Why she didn’t play Amy in Gone Girl: Two years ago, Witherspoon snapped up the rights to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, initially thinking of herself for the lead, but after she found out that director David Fincher wanted someone “cool and unapproachable” for the part—it eventually went to Brit Rosamund Pike—she was happy to step aside. “Whatever I am, I’m not that,” she says with a cackle.

Her two-year-old son Tennessee: “He’s like a blond version of my husband. He’s so pretty. The older he gets, the more and more he looks like him. So cute.”

Being included on a Forbes list of actors who weren’t worth their paychecks: “And there I was thinking I was reading about Ben Stiller! Thank God their articles are so long. I was on page six. Nobody can have got that far.”

Rebooting her career: “It’s not that the roles dried up. They just weren’t as dynamic or as interesting as anything I felt I could do.” One A-list director she won’t name refused to see her for a part because he said she was too “‘Southern and sweet and huge.’ I was like, ‘All right, back to the drawing board.’ ” If the roles she wanted were not coming to her, she would create them for herself. “When people underestimate me, it’s actually a comfortable place for me. ‘Oh, that’s what you think I am; well, no, I’m not.’ I’m a complex human being. I have many different shades.”

[From Vogue]

She spends most of the time talking about and promoting Wild, but I was surprised to see some quotes from Paul Thomas Anderson (who directed her in Inherent Vice) in the piece as well. I think with all of this shilling – and with Reese’s husband Jim Toth, who is a power player at CAA – Reese will definitely get an Oscar nomination this year. But I personally hope she doesn’t win.

Also – Vogue didn’t ask her about her drunk, backtalking, AMERICAN CITIZEN arrest at all. Weird, right? I mean, Vogue would have been the perfect venue to discuss the arrest and what she learned and put it into some kind of perspective. But they didn’t even ask her.

    I’M A COMPLEX AMERICAN CITIZEN!!!

    • shanaynay says:

      LOL!!!!!!

    • tracking says:

      LOL!

    • Christo says:

Exactly . “The Real Reese” as the article title suggests is not the one found in the carefully manipulated Vogue interview, but, rather…. the drunken, curbside slurs of an entitled pug with blond hair.

    • CTgirl says:

Seriously. She definitely has talent but she’s just so unlikable. It doesn’t help that every pap shot of her seems to occur while she’s shopping.

    • kennedy says:

      LOLOLOLOL.

Also did she shade Rosamund Pike? I love how the author includes “with a cackle.” SIT DOWN REESE. Please, take a stadium of seats. Pike is earning rave reviews for Gone Girl, and I personally can’t wait to see her nominated alongside COMPLEX HUMAN WITHERSPOON. God, I can’t stand Reese.

      • Ripley says:

She totally shaded Rosamund Pike and Ben Stiller (random). Plus the journalist really did not seem to like her at all… “Cackle” is not a pleasant or flattering description of a person’s laugh. Definitely elicits a negative connotation.

    • Green Is Good says:

      Ha ha ha!

  2. AG-UK says:

Yes I am a complex “American Citizen” human being. I just CANNOT with her I don’t care what she does how nice she could be I see her face and want to scream. I do think she is overrated.

  3. Abbott says:

Her blatant Oscar grabbing is kind of embarrassing. Even George and Amal are like “Yo Reese. Take it down a notch. The public has had enough.”

    • starrywonder says:

Ha! And true. She is gunning for an Oscar. Her last several movies have sucked though and I don’t see anyone falling all over themselves to see her two latest either.

      • JJ says:

She is on full campaign mode. Can’t stand her, she is phony as hell. Her Oscar for Walk the Line was completely undeserved.

      • gefeylich says:

Well, as Kaiser said, her husband is a player at CAA, so he’ll also throw whatever weight he has behind her Oscar campaign. If someone as unlikeable as AnnE Hathaway can finagle am undeserved SA Oscar just by campaigning hard, it will be a piece of cake for Laura Jeanne Poon, American Citizen.

  4. Rie526 says:

Those photos really don’t look like her.

  5. GlimmerBunny says:

I like Reese (life long Legally Blonde fan!) and I think she looks pretty in the shoot. And yes, she was rude in the arrest video, but it was quite a while ago, so I don’t see why Vogue (and everyone on this site) should bring it up again and again…

    • FingerBinger says:

I like her too. She was in this movie Freeway and it’s still the one of the funniest and weirdest movies I’ve ever seen.

    • Abbott says:

Because she and her hubby were driving drunk and could’ve killed someone. Because she was so belligerent and entitled while verbally assaulting an officer of the law who was doing his job. Because it goes against everything she’s been selling us. And last, because her AMERICAN CITIZEN ON AMERICAN SOIL argument was pretty hilarious.

      • InvaderTak says:

She was trashed yes, but if I remember right her husband was driving. That doesn’t excuse her behavior to the cop, but she wasn’t behind the wheel. And agree with whoever below said to let it go. One incident shouldn’t hang over anyone’s head like that.

      • Abbott says:

Sure, the husband was driving, but that doesn’t mean she’s not complicit, IMO. Maybe I think driving under an impairment so heavy it regularly turns vehicles into swerving murder machines is a bigger deal than most. I just don’t believe it should be shrugged off like it’s someone going through a rite of passage or a tweener getting in trouble for egging their neighbor’s garage.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree, GlimmerBunny. I think she made an ass of herself, but she apologized and I don’t know what more she can do. It’s not like she married her spouse’s adopted daughter, or took videos of herself urinating on underage girls, like some men I could mention who continue to be glorified by the public. Let’s move on.

      • Candy Love says:

But she didn’t apologize she spent that whole interview making excuses for her behavior.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

“I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said,” Witherspoon said. “It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”

Sounds like an apology to me. I guess I cut her some slack because I have said things I regretted before. All you can really do is say you’re sorry and learn from your mistake. It’s not my place to tell other people when to move on, but I’m moving on.

      • Kiddo says:

For a second there I thought you were apologizing to me for things you said yesterday during the rum diaries. Although you might have been rude, you were articulately rude and so no worries, GREAT comment.

I also forgive you for Amal’s dress and my shoes.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I agree. She did make an ass out of herself, but she has apologized. There are more serious crimes that would be worthy of holding against her for years, this isn’t one of them.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @kiddo
Putting the final touches on my potato gun…

      • Josefa says:

I agree completely. People act like she should start selling herself as an alcoholic with severe road rage based on one incident. Her behavior was awful, but making an ass of yourself while drunk is not something I’d consider someone bitchy or evil for.

      • Dolce crema says:

Ok but to be fair, though he’s a pedophile/predator/bad man, he ads something to the world in his films. Her, not so much. Tracy flick was good, not sure what else.

    • pwal says:

Well, Vogue asked Jolie and Aniston about the Triangle of Doom 1-2 years after the fact.

While it would be nice to think that Vogue has risen above tabloid tactics, I think that Witherspoon may have used the full measure of her PR machine to prevent questions about the incident.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

They didn’t ask her because she didn’t approve of it. Just from what I learned about the Triangle of Doom–Jennifer Aniston has copy approval…she doesn’t do an interview without it. So Vogue, however tabloid-y they may be were not hitting her with any surprises. She was just pissed that she got *some* backlash. So I doubt that Reese Witherspoon, who’s married to a top CAA agent, would not have copy approval. Or at least make it known that she’s not going to answer questions about certain subjects.

      • Gail says:

So . . .”copy approval,” eh? My, that should be more widely known. It changes the way it all looks/reads, knowing that.

    • Penelope says:

She’s never been better than she was in Election and Legally Blonde.

And agree that the drunk DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM thing happened a while back, she addressed it, no need to re-hash.

    • K.B. says:

Had Ms. Perfect taken responsibility for her actions, people would probably be a little more willing to let it go. Instead, she wore a counterfit Atlanta Police Department hat and threw her husband under the bus. Also – it wasn’t that long ago.

Just because you like a stupid chick flick that was made 14 years ago doesn’t mean Reese has carte blanche to do whatever she wants. People still bring up the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie love triangle, and that was almost a decade ago.

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

And to Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitts Credit – they haven’t been seen out and about drinking and driving. This is a serious problem which should Not be swept under the rug because the person doing it looks pretty in a red dress. How much blood has been spilled by drunk drivers?

      • starrywonder says:

I agree. That’s the real issue. She did all of this mouth servicing after that video came out and threw her husband to the wolves since he went to rehab for drinking (eyeroll). They both suck as far as I am concerned.

      • Tiffany :) says:

See GoodNamesAllTaken’s post above, Reese DID take responsibility for her actions.

      • Gail says:

My guess is her husband, CAA “power player” and all that, threw himself under the bus – voluntarily, for her. They’re both interested in saving her image, after all.

    • Montrealise says:

Even before that incident, there were rumors that Reese’s sweet act was just that – an act – and that she was really quite rude and condescending to others, with a huge sense of entitlement. The incident just proved that all the rumors were true.

      • Dolce crema says:

Yes! & Even without rumours, her tone in the situation showed her true colors. No she doesn’t need to go to jail for being annoying and rude and fake, but since I never was a big fan, I now probably never will be. We don’t have to forget that she’s a stuck up weirdo

      • Gail says:

When I look at her, I always just see Tracey Flick.

  6. lucy2 says:

I doubt she’s expecting a win, but probably hoping for a nomination to get back into that level of actors.

  7. Greata says:

I’m a complex human being. I have many different shades.”…..Yes you do, …many, many different shades…..of bitchery.

    • Heather says:

I love that she is side saddling up to authenticity. She is “complex” and has at least “one edge” (as opposed to being edgy, because she’s not going that far she’s a Belle still, golly gee).

She pushed that debutante southern belle routine so hard, and now because of how public that ridiculous arrest was – she’s decided to admit she has an edge. Thanks doll, we the American citizens, think we figured out your edge when we saw that video.

  8. InvaderTak says:

Complex human beings need not say that out loud.

    • lower-case deb says:

well my life is a complex complex of complexness. nary a single day goes by without me having a complex about something.

eh weird how if i type ‘complex’ out enough times it becomes really foreign in my brain?

      • mimif says:

So are you saying: There are complex complexes. These are complexes we know that are complex. There are complex uncomplexes. That is to say, there are things that are complex that are not complex. But there are also uncomplex uncomplexes. There are things we don’t complex that we don’t complex.

      • Jaderu says:

I’m eating complex carbohydrates whilst reading this thread. My artisan flatbread thinks he’s friggin Nietzsche.
        I have snobby food.

      • mimf says:

And we have a LOL. 😀

      • Jaded says:

I live in a townhouse complex….does that count??

      • JustChristy says:

        Oh, the complexity!!

    • Kiddo says:

@mimif, do you have a complex complex?

@InvaderTak, I agree, lol. This is a desperate and non-subtle attempt to say, “I have more depth and am more interesting than you think I am”. Translation: “No, I don’t and I’m really not”.

  9. Jaderu says:

She looks like January Jones on the cover.
    #fiftyshadesofwitherspoon

    • mimif says:

Jaderu, this is OT but I’m afraid in your absence, you have started the War of The Potato.

And yes she totally looks like JJ here.

      • Jaderu says:

        War of the Potato?!?
        Make mashed potatoes, not war!

      • mimf says:

Seriously. There was no less than 100 references to potatoes here over the weekend on the Alamooney spectacle. Perhaps it could have been considered more of a movement, but KIDDO turned it into a WAR.

      • Jaderu says:

Dangit! I was power-washing the house and knee deep in gutter kleenin’ all weekend!(my evil husband made me do it while he just sat there watching while petting the hairless cat on his lap and sipping a martini!!!)
I missed the great Potato Skirmish of 2014!

  10. tracking says:

Like so many actors, she seems to mostly play herself. The Oscar bait roles are tiresome. Except “Elle Woods”—fabulous performance there!

  11. Talie says:

She won’t win. There’s too much of a push to reward Julianne or Amy… even Rosamund is getting a lot of killer notices.

    • K.B. says:

Rosamunde’s pregnant, too. She timed it to where she’ll be seconds away from giving birth when award season kicks in.

  12. Mean Hannah says:

The cover doesn’t really look like her, but the second photo – she looks gorgeous. Well, on my little screen, anyway. And I think she has great legs! My favorite movie of hers has to be the Man in the Moon and Election and I’ll always have a soft spot for her inspite of her recent troubles. I don’t really have issues with her drunken outbursts with the arresting officer, but I do have huge issues with her getting in a car with a drunk driver.

  13. Sugar says:

Her response to the question about that Forbes list of actors not worth their paychecks is pretty funny. She handled that question well.

    • Josefa says:

It was! And it was a pretty shady question.

    • I Choose Me says:

She handled it by shading Ben Stiller. Ben Stiller movies are up there with Adam Sandler movies for me so I can’t quite disagree but I’m still surprised she went there.

  14. Lucian says:

She looks beautiful. That’s all I got.

  15. Mischa Jane says:

I love the cover photo. It’s gorgeous.

I still like Reese. I know she’s a bitch, but I don’t care. It makes her more interesting to me.

  16. smcollins says:

I’m in agreement about the photos not really looking like her. I swear at first glance I thought she was Patricia Arquette (albeit heavily photoshopped). But the January Jones comparison is way more accurate.
I don’t really have an opinion about her one way or the other, aside from thinking she’s a pretty good actress and has cute kids.

  17. gurll says:

Vogue magazine covers are so catalog. Basic white chicks against floral or blank backdrops.

  18. K.B. says:

You should re-think your campaign strategy, Reese. Your fan base consists of women who are anything but complex.

  19. Blythe says:

“Country chic, city cool”? Really, American Vogue? Is that the best that you’ve got?

  20. Dawn says:

Oh she is just one of those actresses that I like sometimes and dislike others. I personally think that she was the best in Election. I love that movie and could watch it over and over again and come up with something I missed before. I hated her June Carter character and she won the Academy Award for it, that’s how much I know!

    • Luciana says:

IMO she’s one trick ponny. She was good in Election and I really enjoyed her in Legally Blonde but the rest of her movies were BAD. Walk the line was watchable thanks to Joaquin Phoenix.

    • I Choose Me says:

Best Reese Witherspoon movie is Freeway. All other opinions contrary to this are wrong. 😀

  21. Chinoiserie says:

Well unless I am mistaken Reese is supposedly good in Wild so I would not mind her getting nominated. as long as someone else (hopefully Amy) will win. I think Reese is better actress some think.

  22. anne_000 says:

I think the word is ‘contradicting,’ not ‘complex.’ She’s throwing all sorts of shade at others at the same time she’s says she’s too ‘sweet’ for her own good. I didn’t like her shading Rosamund Pike Ben Stiller, the writer, and readers who aren’t capable of getting to page six of an article. Why is she going after Rosamund as ‘cool and unapproachable’ when RP is working for RW’s project? Why is she going after Ben Stiller? He’s ‘huge’ and getting parts while though she thinks she’s ‘huge’ as him, she’s not getting parts. Why? Because she’s not as popular and not as ‘approachable’ as he is.

RW IS the one who is ‘cool and unapproachable.’ She’s not ‘Southern and sweet and huge.’ Why is she saying she can’t play ‘cool and unapproachable’ at the same time she says she’s soooooo ‘complex’ she can play other ‘shades’ of a character? She says she’s against getting stereotyped yet she let her project’s director stereotype her out of a role at the same time she says she’ll create a role for herself against a stereotype she thinks she has?

    • Lou says:

yeeeeah, tht’s some bull from her! “Ooh, I’m complex! But I can’t play cool or unapproachable, even though no one buys me as sweet and innocent anymore!” Fail, Reese. You let me down, I used to love you.

    • I Choose Me says:

Nice analysis of her double speak. You make some damn good points.

  23. allheavens says:

Gurl who do you think you’re fooling, alcohol only brings out the truth.

  24. Joh says:

I saw that wedding video a few months ago of her dancing,
    (The pointing fingers dance)
    She is not that complex.

  25. luana says:

I swear if this bitch wins another Oscar while amazing actresses like Glenn Close, Robin Wright, Julianne Moore , Annette Bening didn’t I’ll stop going to the cinema. Hell!

  26. kimbers says:

    HAHAHAHA !

She’s just a dumbass and there’s nothing complex about that.

  27. Veronica says:

That is some serious photoshop at work. Reese is beautiful, but she’s not that young and fresh-faced. Not that I think Vogue wouldn’t be less than superficial, but it still makes me roll my eyes.

As for her complexity…layered, I’d say more. Good at playing a role despite being a completely different person.

  28. Josefa says:

Sheesh people. We’re just finished with September. Can we save the oscar predictions for when these films actually premiere?

  29. Cupcake says:

    Photoshopped to hell!!

  30. Cheryl says:

The legs and hips on the second photo look very disturbing to me..I guess an enthusiastic treatment of woman’s body + photo shop.

  31. LAK says:

And so the oscar campaigning begins…..

  32. HA says:

“he’s a blonde version of my husband”

    BAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

insiders know this isn’t jimmy joes swimmy fellow..

    • Inside the Weird says:

      You are correct HA!

That will come to surface in time, just like her self entitlement, drinking ways!

HAHA! and everyone blamed Phillippe as the cheater, problem in that marriage!

As Nanci Ryder is crashing and burning for all the lies over the years, Witherspoon will go down in flames also!

      Karma!

  33. MisJes says:

She looks absolutely gorgeous in this shoot! I know she’s unpopular here, but I couldn’t care less, I like her. Also, her children are just beautiful.

  34. jesusmaryandjoseph says:

Love her. Let she who has never driven impaired or while texting, or ridden with someone who was, or loved someone who was, cast the first stone.

  35. norah says:

what i see in election seems to be who reese w really is. she will do anything or say anything to win regardless of how many pple she has to step up over. reminds me of anne hathaway – she was so fake throughout the season campaigning for her oscar it put me off her for good. and reese annoys me on so many levels – the drunk driving was the cultimattion – it was dangerous for her and her hubby and for the others on the road – it wasnt so long ago either – mel gibson was drunk as well and no one in hw has forgotten that at all what makes reese so special? she didnt need to say anything about rosamund pike – but she went there – i pray that julianne moore wins the oscar and that reese is not even nominated

  36. Dany says:

The second pic is very beautiful.
The cover not so much… too much photoshop on her face. She looks like a computergeneriert robot and not like a real person. They made her lips look strange
