Liam Hemsworth: ‘I put in more work & that’s what separates me from others’

Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth covers the October/November issue of Nylon Guys in full beardy fashion. He’s promoting his role in Mockingjay: Part I as the grumpy, self-righteous Gale. I kid, sort of. Gale is so judgy of Katniss (telling her the “correct” way to think and act) that I’m Team Peeta by default when it comes to The Hunger Games. Liam seems like a nice guy outside of his Gale character. He’s definitely imposing on a physical level. His acting career hasn’t gone far outside of this franchise, but there’s still plenty of time to work that out.

Liam has been offically single for a year and it’s hard to believe that he ever dated (let alone got engaged to) Miley Cyrus. They were together for years but were probably too young. It happens. One person evolves or devolves as the other stays the same. Sad. I think it worked out for the best though. Liam briefly rebounded with a random and made out with Nina Dobrev, but he’s solo now. Liam tells Nylon that he bears no ill will towards Miley:

On Miley: “There’s not much to say; there’s no bad blood there.”

On his success: “If you put the work in, and you show that you’re willing to work hard, you’ll succeed. I feel that I often put in more work, and that is what separates me from the other people.”

Playing with rifles & bows as a child: “For some reason, my grandpa thought they would be good to give to us–we would just do stupid sh-t out in the bush. I think everyone agrees that I was the naughtiest as a kid. My uncles used to call me ‘Devil Child,’ or ‘Triple’ for triple six. They used to tell my brother Chris that they were going to get the demons out of him because he was also a little crazy. But to me, they’d just be like, ‘You’re too far gone. There’s no exorcising you anymore.'”

On his Hunger Games buds: “I’ve been friends with all these people for so many years now …. I’m so lucky to have Jennifer [Lawrence] and Josh [Hutcherson] and Woody [Harrelson] and all these other great people. We;ve created really strong bonds. It’s like high school because we’ll mess around for half the day and then we’ll do a little bit of work. Everyone’s goofing around and trying to mess each other up.”

On JLaw specifically: “Jen was hands down the biggest joker, but any time you had Liam in a scene with some combination of Jen, Josh, or Woody, there were going to be a lot of laughs.”

Liam on Woody: “Woody’s [Harrelson] like a little kid. Me and Jen always call him a Labrador because you throw something and he’ll fetch it. When he does turn it on, he’s got the most intense, crazy look in his eyes. He’s such a great actor, yet he can be so free and just have fun with the whole thing.”

Advice from Harrison Ford: “When we were on set [of Paranoia], I asked Harrison if he ever doubted what he was doing or why he was doing it. He kind of stopped for a second and was like, ‘No. Not for a second. This is the best job in the world'”

[From Nylon Guys]

See? Liam knows how to make nice with Miley in the press. I’m sure there’s some bad blood as with every breakup, yet he’s being classy. He may still be genuinely perplexed at how his sweet girlfriend turned into a twerking symbol of Disney rebellion. For what it’s worth, Miley hasn’t badmouthed Liam either.

I hope Liam doesn’t end up being Taylor Lautner of The Hunger Games. Most of his indie projects have skipped theaters and done direct-to-internet. He needs to pick better films. He may work hard, but hard work will get him nowhere without a decent agent.

“If you put the work in, and you show that you’re willing to work hard, you’ll succeed.”

I think that’s a nice idea but I don’t really believe it. Many people work their asses off and still never make it and in the movie industry there are only so many roles to cast not everybody can make it. Especially if you don’t fall into the young (at least for woman), attractive, white category.

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t work hard, but there’s a big luck part to it as well.

I do like Liam though and it’s great to see that neigher he nor Miley feel the need to wash their dirty laundry in public.

    • Sabrina says:

I agree with that. I think in the entertainment industry it’s really all about luck & timing. You can work hard for years yet never become a household name.

I don’t think hard work is solely due to the success he’s had so far.

      • Brrrrr says:

Its not just the Entertainment Industry, its life as a whole. I know nobody wants to acknowledge how little we actually influence our fates and so we all go around claiming that its all hard work etc. But in reality, its a hundred thousand factors that conspire to make one person a success and another struggle. Even work ethic can be a factor of where you were born, who raised you and even actual access to challenging but fulfilling work that then allows you to cultivate that ethic.

And with Liam, I dont even have to be a genius to know that something in his background (or that of his brothers) unlocked afew doors early on. Hardworking doll-like men are a dime a dozen kid. Your stars aligned/ your gods poured favor/ you got lucky << take your pick.

      • Kiddo says:

        @Brrrrr, truth.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree. Plus, I have observed over the years – almost everybody thinks they work harder than the people they work with.

      • Cheryl says:

So true. people tend to ascribe success to their own (superior) efforts or qualities. Conveniently. The danger here is it makes it easy to blame others who share those work ethics or qualities but do not will dot can not get traction.

      • Wilma says:

Studies actually show that children of parents who raise them with the idea that hard work will get you places are more succesful than children of parents who raise them with the idea that you need luck to succeed. So maybe not everyone will be very succesful through sheer hard work, but as a group the hard working people do better.

Did he just refer to himself in the third person?

    • Esmom says:

Ha, I wondered about that, too. I was also struck by how he says he works so hard yet on the set they goofed around most of the time then put a little work in. Dude needs to refine his message a bit.

  3. Leah says:

I think he is a nice guy and i am sure he works hard. But there are much better actors that am sure work equally hard that aren’t given leads in big budget movies, or even the opportunity to be in one.
He has got a lot of opportunities because he fits the mould.

  4. Nene says:

Hardwork pays but I believe some people are luckier than others.
Take a look at A.Jolie who is a mega star. This isn’t because she is a best actress cos there are some – Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchet- who are better actresses than her.
Yes A.J’s background played a role, hardwork too but imo she is among the extraordinarily lucky ones.
Bottomline is, some people are favoured more than others, they have that extra luck where anything they touch turns to gold.
Even in real life(outside hollywood), you see some of the average students back in the university turn out being much more successful than the best in their set. That’s life.

    • Esmom says:

Not just luck but connections, too. In HW and in the real world. Who you know can be huge.

    • Icarus says:

Yes, connections play a big role as well in any career. AJ father is a pretty well known actor, and I know her mother was a model or actress…can’t remember which, but thankfully AJ is a decent actress.

Heck, a guy my dad works with barely has any work history, is about the same age as me, just got a huge promotion into management. The guy is related through marriage to one of the head hunchos. I’d go into more detail, but I’m sure no one’s interested in more. Just stating a point.

  5. Jen says:

He won’t have any career after Hunger Games. He’s a crappy actor and looks like a caveman.

  6. serena says:

And why would he ever bear ill will toward Miley? It’s not like it’s exclusively her fault (as far as we know), they grew up and changed -well, she did (for the worst). They were so young, and to be engaged and stuff at that age when everything could change one minute or another.. not really savy.
And in the end he’s the one who rebounded right after breaking up with her.. so why blame just her?

  7. Koala says:

I don’t know…. I heard there was some unfaithfulness on his part and that’s what played at part in miley wanting to “act out” (though I do think she really is just becoming her crazy, quirky self). But it always bothered me that in pictures she looked at him so adoringly in almost every one, and yet he was staring off looking super distant. I feel for miley because when you get your heart broken that young, especially by someone older who you think holds the universe in their hands, it can make you go a little crazy. Crazy enough to twerk on everything that moves. Point is– don’t know that I can think of him as a a “nice guy.”

  8. Jag says:

Am I the only one who remembers that he cheated on Miley just before their breakup? His nice guy persona just seems like an act to me.

  9. Eli says:

The thing is as soon as he and Miley stopped dating…he kind of fell off the radar.

  10. shayne says:

His sweet little gf can change and become anything she wants to be. He is a cheater so he can go find another sweet little one.

  11. 'P'enny says:

i hope his role is bigger in Mockinjay because blink and you miss him in the last two films and i prefer him to Peter. But, i prefer Finnick to both, god that actor Sam Claifin has charisma in spades.

  12. LAK says:

I guess I’m the only person who remembers all the trouble Miley used to get into before and during their relationship. The videos/behind the scenes interviews with various entertainment channels that pointed to someone completely different, and somewhat wild, to their public image. Hello oops semi nude pic for VF when she was underage which was swept under the rug whilst blaming the photographer, the p*nis birthday cake or how about Jonas brother interview where he talked about a 14yr old Miley turning him onto weed and goodness knows what.

Their engagement was always bound to fail per the normal course of life given their ages, but Miley has never been the ‘sweet girl’ that her image portrayed her to be. The current incarnation is more in line with all the stuff that leaked during her teen years.

And Liam always defended her publicly when the leaks happened and everyone lost it. I guess he just grew tired of it.

  13. Anne tommy says:

If it’s compulsory to have a Hemsworth I’ll go with Chris, he has more of a twinkle…

  14. Fan says:

He is sending mixed signal to Miley that is why she can not get over him. He is not being honest.
