Sarah Paulson rants about fandom & love on Twitter: weird or makes sense?

Sarah Paulson

Sarah Paulson has led an unusual career. She’s been a working actress for two decades and has mostly managed to fly under the radar. She’s sporadically hit upon a few successful tv shows like Deadwood and American Gothic but nothing major. Until American Horror Story, which has a huge following. I’m not knocking Sarah’s career record. I’m only pointing out that she hasn’t been hit with a massive following until now. AHS fans are very passionate, and they’re excited about the upcoming Freak Show season. The huge wave of excitement may be unsettling to her.

This season, Sarah shall play conjoined twins Bette and Dot. Ryan Murphy revealed that each scene with the twins took about 12 hours to film. The effects are supposed to be very realistic looking. People are really excited about this character (er, these characters), and the fandom got out of hand on Twitter. I guess some fans were proclaiming their love for Sarah and asking why she didn’t reciprocate. She went off on a bit of a rant about how “love” isn’t something that she says to strangers:

(1) Why is it so hard to understand that although I do LOVE having you as fans, and I REALLY do, I only say I love you to people with whom

(2) I share real intimacy. It’s not personal, nor is it an insult to your kindness or your deeply appreciated fondness for little ol’ me.

(3) So, no, I won’t tell you I love you, cause I don’t know you. But I do LOVE that you have passion for the show and for me as a performer.

(4) I am very grateful to each and every one of you. Without you all, there would be no show and I would be out of the job that has brought such

(5) Joy. Make sense?

[From Sarah Paulson on Twitter]

Strange, right? I feel like Sarah should have ignored the weirdoes. But she has a right to speak out if it makes her feel uncomfortable. It does sound a little pompous for her to lecture fans. I mean, most fans realize the difference between admiration for a celebrity and real love on a personal level. Not all fans get it, but most of them do.

That wasn’t the end of the story. People started calling Sarah out for a Vine video where she said, “I love every. single. one. of you American Horror Story fans! You guys are the best.” Sarah’s response to this video? She tweeted, “@DisorderedRose I was obviously drunk.” Hey, at least she admitted to being drunk. That’s pretty funny.

Speaking of a freak show …. aaargh, it’s the bedbug dress.

  1. Kiddo says:

Easy answer: She’s talking out of both sides of her heads.

  2. bns says:

Her characters on AHS always annoy the sh*t out of me. When Jessica leaves they’re going to make her the center of the show and I’m dreading it.

    • Stoner says:

      YES.

Can’t stand her. She is the worst part of every season.

    • Josefa says:

I can’t wait for that to happen, personally. I love Jessica Lange but they’ve written the exact same character for her in all 4 seasons.

      • bns says:

I agree about Jessica playing the same character, but I still don’t want Sarah to become the star of the show. I’d prefer Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, or Lily Rabe. Or maybe even a man, like Zachary Quinto.

    • mememe says:

I’ve only seen her in AHS and her face was so odd to me. Like she may have a natural plastic surgery face. Or just too much plastic surgery. I found her face too distracting and comical.

      • QQ says:

Yeeeaaah Is Like botox and Fake lips… I think you pinpointed what always zorta annoys me with her.. Her face looks like wax and all

      • Josefa says:

It’s the shape of her lips, but they really are natural. I personally think she’s stunning, but I wouldn’t call her a classical beauty exactly. There is an oddity to her face I personally find very beautiful.

  3. Annie says:

Hahahahahahaha! Bed bug dress. Love it.

  4. Jen says:

It makes sense and all, but it’s also a super weird thing to rant about.

Also her face confuses me. It looks like so much plastic surgery gone wrong.

  5. lucy2 says:

I like her, but you couldn’t pay me to waste my time on AHS again. That show always starts off great and falls apart by midseason. No thanks.
I get what she’s saying, but generally she probably would have been better off simply ignoring whatever it was that she was responding too. Someone who is demanding you reply a certain way and instantly pay back a compliment is not someone worth dealing with.

    • Kiddo says:

I never watched it before, but was drawn in by the first episode of Freaks. I guess I should have low expectations then? The clown scared the ever loving shit out of me. More so when he was tormenting the woman and boy in the cage, than during the murderous stabbings.

      • Josefa says:

I thought Asylum had a brilliantly written plot. Murder House was absolutely awful, and Coven was hilarious if you overlooked the plot holes.

Don’t give up on the show. Even if the plot starts making no sense, it’s still pretty entertaining.

      • Kiddo says:

That clown. Holy crap, I thought I was actually going to have nightmares.

      • FingerBinger says:

I thought the first season was the best season. Asylum was good. I think they should have done more with Chloe Sevigny’s character. Coven was really good ,but again they underutilized the characters. They should have used Gabby Sidibe,Frances Conroy,Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett more.

      • MediaMaven says:

I’ve watched the first two seasons (NetFlix). I started watching Season 4 on Sunday (via FXX app). I watched deliberately during the day because, clowns. They scare the freaking holy crap out of me. I took an afternoon nap after watching (I’m a slug on the weekends) – and I had a DAYTIME nightmare! Because, clowns.

      • Josefa says:

Oh God, Twisty. I’ve never been afraid of clowns and AHS truly is awful at the parts meant to be scary, but that guy. That guy really is creepy.

The reason I hated Murder House was because of the actors playing the Harmon family. All 3 of them were so wooden, especially Taissa. God knows I wasn’t excited to see her pudgy cheeks again on Coven.

    • Tiffany27 says:

So true Lucy2. The only season I really liked all the way through was the first season.

  6. vv007 says:

That was a weird rant and I was not excited at all about the latest season of AHS. I think I am done with it.

  7. Other Kitty says:

That bedbug dress is all shades of awesome.

  8. whatsmyname? says:

It makes sense what she is saying but I don’t understand why she had to go on a rant about it.

  9. Lori says:

She’s friends/lovers with Paedro Pascal so she probably just says I love you to him. And I don’t lame her.

  10. Josefa says:

I love Sarah and I think she makes a lot of sense here. Why she said it? Probably because people were speculating about how she’s an ungrateful bitch for not reciprocating her love for fans.

Sarah’s pretty… divisive. Every AHS follower I know either dreads her or loves her to death.

  11. eribra says:

Still love that dress, oh, to be tall and thin! Also, half of the time I see this girl I’m only clicking the links cause I think it’s the actress who played Anya on Buffy. I can’t say I have seen her in any thing.

  12. Dany says:

I always mistake her for Emily Blunt. They could be sisters

  13. Indira says:

I really kind of agree with her. Some of these people on Twitter really take it too far. They get really involved in ‘ship wars’ and tweet the actors playing their ships to take their sides. And the most disturbing is that they tweet suggestive fan art at them (which I find strange because more often than not those actors are in real life relationships with other people and it must really get weird for them)
So I guess I can see where she’s coming from. It must really take a lot of mental strength to not be affected by that.

  14. Gypsy says:

She’s right, people should save that word for those “near and dear to them”, keep throwing around “love” and pretty soon you will have to invent a new word for your husband/your lover/your child/your parents and your dog.

I have never loved/said I love anyone I have not spent some time getting to know.

  15. happymama says:

Good for her for setting some healthy boundaries. People are weird and obsessive. I hope people respect her and realize she’s a person, not just a character on the show. She deserves to feel safe too.

  16. SamiHami says:

I only know her from AHS. I like her and her characters on the show. I’m looking forward to seeing her as a two-headed woman (I’m recording them so I can binge watch the entire season. It’s killing me to wait, but I will!)

I thought season one was campy and fun. Season two was excellent. I really, really enjoyed it. I haven’t seen season three yet (come on, Netflix!)

  17. TOK says:

Do we call it a rant just because it’s long and must be meted out in multiple tweets? Because she sounds totally reasonable and pleasant and not rant-y at all.

    • Gypsy says:

I think “rant” has lost it’s true meaning, because as soon as someone gives a lengthy speech/statement people want to call it a rant, in smarter times it was called being “wordy/making a lengthy statement/”, but now long statements are considered being all pejorative

      • Gypsy says:

Dictionary definition of rant – To talk in a wild or vehement way, to rave. – Dictators and mad people rant, most people just talk too long, they tend to be too “wordy.

    • Josefa says:

True. She doesn’t sound mad at all. It reminds me when people wrote Pamela Anderson “slammed” the ALS bucket challenge when she was simply like “sorry guys, I don’t want to do this”.

    • Jessica says:

Seems like when a celebrity says anything negative about anything on Twitter, it becomes a rant. I’ve seen one tweet be called a rant.

  18. taxi says:

That dress would be miserably uncomfortable! Net edges are very scratchy on skin. I’d have a rash anywhere my arms or legs touched it.

  19. ramona says:

That “bedbug” dress is amazing, I must have it, it WILL be mine, oh yes it will be mine.
