I agree that Jan deserved more recognition and roles. Some describe her as a very private person, so I thought perhaps she had mostly shunned acting.

  2. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I don’t get the writer’s comment on Tina Fey and Rob Schneider…….does Tina not like Rob because of his anti-vaccine views?

    • Christin says:

She is probably just comparing their comedic talent and how Rob (arguably of lesser talent) ended up with a movie career and Jan did not.

      • deehunny says:

this is what I thought, but it also sounds like she did the comparison too bc she just straight doesn’t like him. i wonder what dirt she knows about him

    • delphi says:

It’s kind of a “stage-whispered” secret in the comedy world (especially in the relatively small circle of comedians that wind up on SNL) that the comedians who write material (theirs or anyone else’s) have a bit of a superiority complex over those that don’t. And it’s usually for a reason. David Spade, anyone? How that yutz has had ANY kind of a career is beyond me. Being mean is funny if you can use it as a method to encourage self-improvement. But just being sh!##y for the sake of being sh!##y is not cool, homes.

That being said, Jan Hooks was also all kinds of brilliant during her short stint on “Designing Women”. Tina, as usual is spot-on. Jan should’ve had a HUGE career. Nora Dunn, too. A lot of the mid-80s/early 90s SNL ladies were super funny in an understated way. Except for Victoria “Helium Goddess of the Tea Party” Jackson. Ugh.

      • Kiddo says:

I always heard that David Spade, the real person, not his characters, was actually a nice guy. Is that wrong?

I don’t really remember Jan Hooks, but I know of her, maybe from SNL special look-backs or something like that.

      • Christin says:

The other day I watched the white trash bed and breakfast skit and realized nearly half of the performers in that hilarious skit are gone — Swayze (SNL guest), Hartman, Farley and Hooks. Victoria is pretty good in it (though I always thought she was the weakest female cast member).

So many memorable moments from that era. Jan was an incredible Tammy Faye, too.

      • Jag says:

Kiddo, it’s interesting because everything I ever heard about him in private life was that he was a womanizing jerk.

      • delphi says:

@Kiddo: And see, I’ve always heard the opposite regarding Spade, from both people in the industry and gossip grist. My understanding from cohorts who’ve crossed paths with him is that he acts all chill and nice-y until vaginas get involved..then he goes all caveman douche-canoe in some feeble attempt to attract women. I mean, he’s got to be bad if Heather Locklear dumped him…she’s proven herself to be incredibly forgiving of douche-canoery in the past (Tommy Lee, Richie Sambora, et al).

And OT, re: the Parliament Hill shootings, a family friend is a former teacher of Cpl. Cirillo and the entire city of Hamilton is just apoplectic with grief. But there should be a major surge of pride in the aftermath of such a tragedy, the Sgt At Arms still being a crack shot after retirement. Don’t mess with a Mountie, would-be terrorists…they always, ALWAYS get their man.

      • Kiddo says:

Hmm, oh well, not a humungous disappointment since I wasn’t really a fan of his work.

      • Tiffany :) says:

When I was a small child, my family would regularly watch the oldest Saturday Night Live episodes on Nick at Night and we’d also watch the current versions. I got used to women being a strong part of the ensemble. Jan Hooks was so funny and talented, but I had honestly forgotten about her until she passed away. Delphi, thanks for reminding me about Nora Dunn, she was great as well!

Tina makes a great point. Why didn’t we see more breakout female starts from SNL, as we have with the men? It certainly wasn’t because of talent.

    • Bridget says:

Its because he’s not particularly funny and owes most of his career to being buddies with Adam Sandler.

      • Trillion says:

He’s from my little town so lots of business have signed posters of his stupid movies. Maybe they were popular. I don’t know. But I do know that the only way women are going to be in popcorn-movies like that can only do it one way: By appearing “f*ckable”. Jan Hooks was merely talented and hilarious.

  3. minx says:

Jan Hooks was perfection in every role she performed.

  4. Kiddo says:

The breaking Bad figures are fantastic, but only for kids like mimif. She already has a dollhouse and plenty of land to bury tiny money.

  5. Sayrah says:

Jan Hooks was really talented. I forgot she was in the Coneheads movie too!

I just had a flashback to Tina Fey doing that SNL sketch with Molly Shannon and women wearing slutty halloween costumes. That was funny.

  6. GingerCrunch says:

    All Hail, Tina Fey!

  7. Erinn says:

The Ottawa shooter situation was pretty sketchy – but I guess as horrible as it is, it’s a reminder that we’ve got it pretty good and peaceful in Canada.

A portion of our province’s city -Halifax – was on lockdown this morning because some idiot was on the loose with a rifle – http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/police-arrest-man-in-downtown-halifax-after-gun-report-1.2067364

Thankfully it went peacefully. I’m about 3 hours away from there, but I have friends/family living in Halifax – this kind of stuff is never a good thing to hear about.

The Ottawa incident was only a couple of days after another one in Quebec- http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/martin-rouleau-quebec-driver-shot-by-police-radicalized-rcmp-1.2806104

The whole thing is horrible, and mainly, I’m just happy that there haven’t been mass casualties. My heart goes out to the families of those killed by these monsters.

    • Bunny says:

Anytime an act of terrorism occurs the media is quick to label it an act perpetrated by radical Islam. This man was seriously disturbed as evidenced by his long history of run ins with the law. My mom works in downtown Ottawa, it’s a scary situation, one that we are not used to in Canada. My heart goes out to the family of the fallen soldier.

  8. Eugenie says:

When is this woman not shading someone?

I don’t get the love for her : she comes across as smug and slelf important and it;’s interesting that she pushes this feminist thing and the whole anit “mean girl” whereas she seems incredibly cliquey and spiteful.

    Most of all she’s unfunny.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I think she is very funny. If she was a man, she wouldn’t be called “smug” or “self important”. She would be called “confident” and “capable”. She is an intelligent woman and has accomplished so much. She has a lot to be confident about. I don’t think its wrong for her to wonder why someone who was as funny as Jan Hooks didn’t have the career that her male counterparts did.

      • joan says:

        Perfectly said, Tiffany!

Tina Fey was HEAD WRITER, not just some nobody. So she’s entitled to an opinion. And she’s a lovely, sociable person. A grownup, unlike some of the male comedians, who mostly act like teenage boys.

Who is she supposed to have shaded I wonder.

It’s so pathetic when a woman slams feminism, which other women worked toward so she’d have the amount of freedom as a woman she does have.

    • Bridget says:

Tina Fey is funny as hell, and for the most part the people that she has actually shaded (as in, not poked fun as part of an awards show) have been terrible people.

  9. Norman Bates' Mother says:

For some reason you seem to mention Joanna Krupa a lot. Up until now, whenever I read about her and watched her pictures, mostly here, I thought of her as another fame-whore with violent and exhibitionist tendencies – the typical Real Housewife but I ‘ve recently hate-watched Poland’s Next Top Model where Krupa is a judge and a host (like a Polish Tyra Banks) and I was shocked how likable she seems to be there – nice, funny and caring. I can no longer dislike her.

  10. Mrs. Darcy says:

Jan Hooks was a really unique, underused talent. I remember her vaguely from SNL as I was a bit young for her era, but only recently was watching her 3rd Rock From the Sun repeats and she was just brilliant in that too. I don’t see why Molly Shannon or Kristen Wiig did better than she did, but they did come slightly after her, maybe there wasn’t as much room for funny women back then. I think it’s sad she didn’t work more but at least Tina recognized her (Haven’t seen that ep of 30 Rock). It is strange how some of the really annoying lesser talented SNL men did go on to ridiculous film careers. Rob must have been a big time tool to work with for Tina to throw shade at him like that

  11. Dorky says:

I’m sorry, but Rob Schneider is HILARIOUS!!! I love everything he’s done. 🙂 WAY funnier than the irritating, one-note Adam Sandler. Sorry. Jan Hooks was AWESOME, and I love her work.

  12. JustChristy says:

I teared up during the playing of “Love is a Dream” on the episode that followed her passing. So bittersweet. She’s gone much too soon.

    • Lucy2 says:

Me too- I didn’t remember that from before and kept waiting for the “joke”, but then there wasn’t one, it was just lovely. And it became a beautiful tribute to her.

  13. OTHER RENEE says:

I loved Jan. Never understood Molly Shannon’s appeal. Her characters were unappealing and similar and she just was not funny. At all.
