Benedict Cumberbatch does 11 impressions in 60 seconds: did he nail them?

wenn21911944

Benedict Cumberbatch is still all over the place. We’re going to have new photos of him at tonight’s Hollywood Film Awards, and we’ll be covering that show over the weekend. I wonder if he’ll bring Sophie Hunter for the red carpet? Cough. Anyway, we have some moments of Cumbergoodness today. Here’s a video making the rounds – it’s a clip from a recent MTV interview Bendy had with Josh Horowitz. Josh gets him to do 11 impressions in 60 seconds. Some of the impressions suck (Christopher Walken, John Malkovich) but some of them are dead-on (Michael Caine, Matthew McConaughey, Alan Rickman). I kind of love Bendy doing Tom Hiddleston, and you can tell that’s the one Horowitz enjoyed the most too.

Very cute. Bendy as Taylor Swift? Ha.

Meanwhile, Bendy also has an interview with The Irish Times – go here to read the whole thing. Again, it’s mostly about Alan Turing, but there are some interesting details and quotes. Like, when Benedict needs sugar he starts gnawing on a huge dark chocolate Toblerone. Some highlights:

On winning all of the “sexiest” and “hottest” polls: “However lost in showbiz someone can get, I’ve never met anyone who really believes that that’s all there is. Can you imagine what a dead end that would be artistically? How could you feed your head like that?”

Deep thoughts: “I like to think that our atoms are made of stardust. I like to think that we’re revolving on this planet and revolving through the galaxy. I love having context that’s so much bigger than I can fathom. It’s fantastic to realise how insignificant you are. So much more exciting than what somebody is wearing, don’t you think?”

The criticism that TIG doesn’t make Alan Turing “gay enough”: “I asked people who knew him, if they knew he was gay. Was he camp? They all said no. It never occurred to them. People just didn’t think about those things. And he didn’t parade it. He didn’t want to be found out. His tragedy was that he had to keep it secret.”

His research: “People do say that I research a lot. And it’s true that I generally never stop researching. But I do have a home life that doesn’t involve being Alan Turing. And sometimes research can be counterproductive. Sometimes you have to rely on instinct. I’m doing Richard III now, and since we found his remains, we know how he died and what he ate. But that’s not Shakespeare’s anachronistic version, which is silly and wonderful and has a million possibilities. So many ways to do it.”

[From The Irish Times]

There’s no mention of his lover/fiancée in the piece, so it could be that this interview was conducted weeks ago, or even at TIFF for all we know. Anyway… MOAR BENDY!! We will never stop writing about Bendy. Ever.

Oh thank god!! My day can officially start now!

    • aly says:

      LOL …

    • Lilacflowers says:

I was worried; I really was. I also think he should leave the mimicry to others who do it much better. Somewhere, Kevin Spacey is partially lifting one eyebrow at that.

      • Lindy79 says:

I had no idea Spacey was so good at impressions!

        Mind. Blown.

      • Lucifer says:

spacey the GOD.. no comparison to anyone with KS

      • Ellen says:

No all this is good now. I’m getting more ideas for the planned Benedict The Movie©. Now he’s into impersonation so I’ll add all those people he does as the people he has already bumped off. Shame Kim and Kanye weren’t in there.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Wait, Ellen, you’re going to have him bump off John Malkovich, Christopher Walken, Michael Caine, Alan Rickman, and Tom in the film? What is there left to watch?

      • aly says:

@Lucifer: Spacey is a god in everything he does.

      • **sighs** says:

Don’t you bump off Rickman! Can he be the foil at the end that takes down Benny? He could be a good guy for once!

      • icerose says:

He managed the accents but not the nuances of speech delivery and inflections, Sean Connery’s was a good of accent with no specifics behind it.
Some were better than others but Tom’s was unrecognisable and his Owen was pathetic.

    • Catherine says:

Lindy, thank you my hangover is now starting to clear

    • jammypants says:

I knew something was missing in my day.

    • gracada says:

A CB Benedict thread is part of my daily diet. 🙂

  2. Abbott says:

Super talented, funny, kind, and a good sport to boot. Wonder what is making him such a happy, joyous otter lately?

    • Maya says:

Sorry Abbott – I don’t kiss and tell otherwise I can tell you exactly why he is looking happy lately 😜

  3. t.fanty says:

    Ummmmmm, no.

    • Lindy79 says:

      HAHA

(he got about 3 of them (one of Rickman shouldn’t even count as we all know he can do it), the rest were…not good)

      • Lilacflowers says:

And he really didn’t get Rickman here either Unless Rickman has lost all ability to form actual words.

      • aly says:

Caine, Nicholson…and ? Hiddles or Swift?

      • Lilacflowers says:

He got Hiddleston’s pacing but not the voice at all. And Swift, nowhere close.

      • lindy79 says:

        I think i was being generous…
Truth be told i think his Rickman could be way better..hes got the gist but he overdoes it.

Hiddles hes got the delivery but not the voice…em….Malkovich (maybe). He still sounds like himself in all of them
Honestly i don’t get why people are acting like he’s cured ebola with this clip. It ain’t great we’ve just been so starved of him showing an ounce of humour lately.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He doesn’t have Malkovich at all.

      • aly says:

I don’t care about the imitations, I’m not a big fan of imitations in general…but it was nice to see him relaxed, smiling, not stressed.

      • MountainRunner says:

ahhh, Hiddles. Long may he threadjack.

        Carry on…

      • **sighs** says:

He didn’t get the Hiddles voice at all. You’d think he’d do better with that one considering they’re besties and all.

      • icerose says:

the reaction to this has been very strange considering it is not that good. I cannot believe that theatre sights as well as Variety etc have been pausing this. I can only think that the theatre sights are gearing up to get as much click bait out of Hamlet that they can and Harvey bribes the rest.

      • icerose says:

      • Catherine says:

You mean in your opinion it’s not that good – that’s a subjective comment. Personally I thought it was good

      • TotallyBiased says:

I’m with the naysayers–he’s getting a lot of mileage out of mostly mediocre impressions. That said, it’s a fast-paced bit o’ fluff that gives both shills and cumberfans what they want–Bendy having a laugh! Plus several are rather good. His Tom impression is NOT one of the good ones, sadly.

    • Snazzy says:

@MountainRunner: thanks for sharing those links! soooo funny!!!

      • MountainRunner says:

Snazzy, you’re welcome. Watching those reminded me of the massive crush I had on Spacey back in the ’90s. I think it’s come back in full force. His smile makes my day.

      • Tippet says:

You guys need to see Peter Serafinowicz as Spacey. YouTube it.

Also, y’all are nuts, Benedict’s impressions are great; he captured McConaughey perfectly without even saying anything.

  4. OhHey says:

That was filmed a while ago, at the TIFF I think. You know, back when he was happy, and not acting like a trapped rat on a sinking ship.

    • aly says:

yeah, I think so…but he’s funny and a dork in his interview with Keira (damn, if they had pulled a showmance between them I would have fallen for it hook, line and sinker…)
      #youcantmanufacturechemistry

      • OhHey says:

It’s funny how all of these old interviews from TiFF and earlier are being circulated now, as if to change the perception that he’s acting like an insane person. I think that’s the genuine Ben, him attempting to act like a grownup and diss the fans, elevate himself above the fandom, is not genuine at all, which is why it looks so awkward. He and Keira are magic together, I agree, THAT is what I would expect to see if he was happily engaged to the love of his life.

    • aly says:

To quote Mycroft Holmes: what do we say about coincidences? The universe is rarely so lazy….

      • Lucifer says:

hehe. I made this quote a few hours ago and it never reached to u guys

      • MissMary says:

Funny how the video was “a surprise release” they’d been “sitting on for a while now”… Makes me think yeah, sure you were… it wasn’t going to be used until he needed some good PR.

      • Catherine says:

Or as publicity schedules usually work, when the film is about to be released?

      • gg says:

Hey now, somedays I feel like I am the conductor on the conspiracy train but I remember TIFF quite well. A lot of reporters were Tweeting about interviews and when they were asked about when they would be published or aired they answered that they wouldn’t until closer to the film’s release. We all knew that Benedict’s schedule would only become more crazy as the fall went on so he did a TON of interviews at TIFF that are only being released now. Nothing shadier than that.

      • aly says:

        Oh, good to know…thanks gg:)

      • Felice says:

Well even if it was planned back in September, you can’t deny that it still shows the contrast in his behaviour.

      • MissMary says:

@Catherine, gg: LOL–fine, fine, I’ll step off the conspiracy train for *THIS* video but that’s it. 😉

  5. Free Spirited Girl says:

Kristen Stewart must have had a heart attack watching someone doing 11 impressions in 60 seconds which is an alien concept to her.

  6. Aiofe says:

Someone needs to shift the focus of this thread back to his engagement, real or not, to this talentless, low level socialite who probably said yes after dating him briefly so she could leech off his fame and money. So here I am!

    • moodgirl says:

@Aoife – Are you here because the show is on downstream.

    • FLORC says:

He didn’t have to propose. Unless she got powers to control his mind. Good grief. The man out of his own free will proposed to his gf and she accepted. This doesn’t go easily with the fans so she must have tricked him and he’s held captive by her. Did I miss anything?

      • moodgirl says:

        Another site.

      • Sooth says:

Oh come on FLORC. That’s really silly. Nobody is saying that. You keep talking about things not being back and white? Well, think about that.

      • FLORC says:

        Sooth
Here. I’m talking about how things are phrased Here. Please understand that part. Not other threads. Here. How he’s either unhappy or happy. No he’s happy about his engagement, but unhappy about how the news is released. Or some variety of that. He’s not smiling so he’s unhappy. Black and white.
I hope I made my point clear. Stick to the thread.

  7. Aiofe says:

Nobody cares about the impressions. We do care about the talentless, low level socialite who said yes to him after briefly dating him so she could leech off his money and fame because she knows her career’s going nowhere. So here I am!

  8. Miss M says:

    NO, he did not.

What’s up with this “Bendy” thing? Is it a tumblr thing? No wonder we had a meltdown over here…

    • EscapedConvent says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one thinking WTH is up with “Bendy.” I cannot think of him that way.

And no, I think he can only do Alan Rickman.

      • j.eyre says:

EsCon, darling, you may want to rethink your choice of words because I, for a fact, know that you can think of Mr. C as all kinds of bendy. And I think many folks here would object to him only being allowed to “do” Mr. Rickman.

      • EscapedConvent says:

Harrumph! All right, Miss Eyre, you have kind of sort of busted me. It’s true I have attemped to bend him into other shapes and characters without hats or jorts, with limited success.

But now I’ve realized he must have got on bendy-ed knee last week, and I am inconsolable.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I must go and brush my tentacles.

      • Miss M says:

I agree with J.eyre… In my opinion, he can do Alan Rickman…lol

    • moodgirl says:

Bendy is PR to make him seem friendly and approachable.

  9. Cate says:

He was already spotted at Heathrow again today, so he’s probably flying out to NYC. No mention of company, but then again, it was just a man who was walking behind him on Twitter. I don’t think Sophie will be at the NYC premiere (at least not visible, on the red carpet, but what do I know? They’ll surely prove me wrong.) Anyway, his schedule IS kind of ridiculous, but that’s life I guess.

And the Irish Times interview says Tigger would be his totem animal. Well, besides for the fact that I think that’s totally unfair to otters everywhere, his Tigger has been a bit of a Shere Khan lately…

    • lindy79 says:

Didnt they give him that animal? He was too busy waxing lyrical about staring at the moon.
(Christ i know he used to talk about scotch in cardigans in front of a fire, which i could fully get on board with, but where the hell has this emo tortured, charcoal sketching, moon gazing failed art student sounding person come from?!?)

(I can say this with confidence as i went to art school)

      • aly says:

He’s always talked about stargazing, even in his GQ interview from a couple of years ago. That’s not new.

      • Aiofe says:

he’s always struck me as very liberal arts student like, tbh

      • Cate says:

LOL, Lindy, maybe they did give it as well, I read through it at record speed. I liked him Scotch drinking, wrapped in woolens (haha) better as well. All that staring at the moon makes me worry he’s maybe a weretigger. But your emo art student makes a bit more sense. Hope it’s not the influence of La Belle Sophie. He’s also using French expressions in the interview, so…

    • Aiofe says:

more like that tiger that took a chunk out of Roy

    • Renee says:

I thought he was going to the HFA tonight in LA? I doubt SH will show up but as you said,Cate, what do I know?

      • aly says:

Yeah, he’s won the award there, so he’s probably headed there (expect more paparazzi pics)

      • MissMary says:

@Aly: TIG is nominated but I don’t think BC himself is up for anything.

      • aly says:

Nope, he’s won the award. Julianne Moore has won as best actress, TIG as best movie, Desplatt for the score of TIG, Duvall as best supporting actor, possibly Keira as supporting actress.

        (source: awards watch)

      • Cate says:

@Renee, you are right though, I just wasn’t up to date and had him at NYC right away. So it’s another awards thingy tonight? Yikes! Rather him than me. Although he might be out in full weretigger again because he’d rather not as well… 😉

      • MissMary says:

@Aly THanks! 🙂 I suck at googling this morning, lol.

      • aly says:

        @MissMary: you’re welcome 🙂

      • gracada says:

Ooooh let’s see if he thanks her…heck, let’s see if he uses her name!

      • moodgirl says:

If you say Beetlejuice three times he is banished to an ugly place. Maybe BC doesn’t want to mention her name alot because he will lose count.

    • EscapedConvent says:

It looks to me that he was Tigger, but is now morphing into Eeyore. I don’t mind, since I love Eeyore. But he was happier when he was Tigger.

    • MissMary says:

HFA tonight, head back to NYC, allegedly do the tumblr chat Sunday for Dreamworks (unless i’s a PR flack doing it in his name *cough*–and they’re taking questions already so yeah for sure they will be VERY vetted), do the talkies and premiere, back to London no later than Wednesday.

      • Cate says:

Yikes, I wasn’t up to date at all. Can’t imagine the Tumblr thing being very creative, like you said, all vetted.

      • Lucifer says:

someone else ll be answering with a dictionary. avoid the words nice, lovely. and say WILWIPT 😀

      • gracada says:

I know he has Today Show on Wednesday….that’s going to be interesting….depends who interviews him….

Looking forward to Jon Stewart….but who would be better? Charlie Rose. That would be amazing!

    • Green Eyes says:

What I don’t understand is where is the WILWIPT??? You’d think because he is soooo popular in the UK that some pesky British pap would get a picture. Is she being held hostage in some back lot somewhere?

  10. OhHey says:

Is Natalie Dormer single? Because I’m watching her on TV now and she’s stunning, and would make a nice match with Ben…someone in the biz who’s articulate, funny and personable, and accomplished. Let’s start rumors…

    • AG-UK says:

NO she isn’t single plus he seems to want someone with a lesser profile than him. They have worked together before though a few years ago

      • Lucifer says:

I dnt think he wants some doormat wife. His mum comes as a strong woman to me. He must like it. Thn again I dnt trust this man after 5.11 so who knows?

      • Felice says:

Ok here’s the thing. If he wanted a woman who wouldn’t “steal his spotlight,” why is he dating within the industry? He could at least go to the business sector of the industry where she wouldn’t be seen.

      • Lucifer says:

        @felice
whatever he is doing right now is outright stupid. He should date normal career woman (doctor, banker, CA, lawyer) but he does not seem to look outside the smelly pond he is IN. thats why i said few threads ago he should abandon london for sometime and live in LA for sometime. Life here is less caged and no one gives a shit abt class. But thn again wht do I know what goies inside his funny little brain?

      • gg says:

His sister said in that Daily Mail article a few years ago that he wanted a woman who could “hold down the fort” and take care of the kids while he went off and worked. To me that is clearly why he and OP broke up – she was not going to just drop her career for him. While SH is technically “within the industry” she hardly has a white-hot career.

      • Aiofe says:

Could anyone ever explain why his sister spoke to the DM about such private matters? i wondered if there was a motive to that

      • Lucifer says:

That was his sisters opinion about him, if u read between the lines. She is a 60+ woman. Even my mum wants someone like that for my bro. So that thing does not influence him. and if it does i ll not be surprised for the crackpot he is now. his life is full of such stupid dreams and decisions

      • Felice says:

I am very inclined to believe the subtle shade from his co-stars that he is indeed a huge idiot.

      • Lucifer says:

count me in in that society. IDIOT is an understatement

      • Maggie says:

        @ Felice

Can you please give me some specifics, links, articles, videos that show me this subtle shade from his co-stars?

I have only heard good things from colleagues and co-stars.

        Thanks in advance.

      • Pinky says:

I think that he wouldn’t even have to look outside the industry…
Let’s be honest, its completely normal to date within the industry (no matter if you’re an actor or behind the camera – simply because you understand the special sort of craziness that comes with it a bit better) – but there are millions of possibilities other than another actress.
What about a writer? Make up Artist? Costume Department? Someone who works in the industry but isn’t in the “spotlight” per se.

      • V.L.719 says:

@Pinky: Ben is meant for a “writer-type”. Someone not fully immersed in Hollywood, but a lady with a decent writing career who can do it all.

      • Felice says:

        @Maggie

Well I’m not going to put all the links because I’ll be marked for spam but there was the infamous Simon Pegg interview. I should mention that no one called him an idiot directly. It’s shade.

Patrick Stewart told the Ivy story where he took advantage of B
Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss, and Steven Moffat have all mentioned how gullible he is.
The STID cast have all railed him on neutron cream and things.
Now, this may be that this may not apply to his love life but it does speak volumes that he is very “easy”

      • Maggie says:

        @ Felice
You do realise Simon Pegg and Alice were joking don’t you? No one took that seriously.

Most of the STID cast were tricked with the neutron cream joke.

Yes he might be a bit gullible but from the stories his colleagues tell they obviously see it as a positive and rather endearing quality and certainly not “shade”. He is trusting.

I am not aware of the Patrick Stewart incident.

I have read and heard many, many wonderful things that colleagues and co-stars have said about him, about his work ethic, his dedication to his craft, his kindness and courtesy to crew and anyone involved in a film.

I found your blanket statement, about co-stars shading him, to be dishonest and not backed up by any solid evidence and it does him a disservice.

      • Felice says:

I don’t think an opinion such as that one can be considered a disservice. I just made observations and those jabs that Simon Pegg made stemmed from somewhere especially with Alice Eve laughing a little too much at it. I will retract making it seem like I was giving an accusation that he was being an idiot. I still love him as an actor and TIG is a very good film. I just want to make sure that he makes it to the Oscars in one piece, which would include not being an idiot.

I am aware that he is a very hard worker and makes friends but that doesn’t mean that someone can’t be naive.

      • Tangiers Eve says:

For some deep shade from Gatiss, Moffat and Virtue on BC, go to

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUq1lypgu2M

at about the 23:00 mark. That was the backstage Nerd HQ Q&A in July 2013, in answer to the question about how the red buttonhole on Sherlock’s coat came to be. I never had any problems imagining that his associates think of him as an increasingly difficult diva. They also accept that he ‘makes’ the show and that these sorts of changes are not unknown when an actor attracts the kind of overwhelming fame that “Sherlock” brought him. Gatiss says something similar (but milder) near the beginning of the actual SDCC panel that took place the same day.

    • HBIC says:

      @V.L.719
He’s meant for a writer? Interesting… I’m actually curious to know if she’s going to fit the “profile” of the woman he’s been saying that he wants…

      • V.L.719 says:

        @HBIC

According to my friend, and to echo what Isis76 said in a previous thread. Both are correct in their info and once this is engagement frenzy fizzles out she’ll come into the picture. She’s young right now, but is growing into her own. And she is deviating from her path right now, but once she stops trying to force the situation on her end, Benedict will begin to sense their connection. I had my friend double check what @Isis76 was talking about and it’s been checked out. Whoever this young lady is, she is aware but he doesn’t because of the vibes my friend got while doing the reading. It was VERY strong from the girl’s end. All my friend could find out about her other than an age difference (it’s not inappropriate or side-eye worthy) was that her education, while not private school/Oxford elite level, comes from her experiences in the world. She had no structure growing up BUT she has been exposed to many different cultures, books, languages, and has attended many different schools. Intellectually, they have a solid understanding and that she compliments him very well even though she comes from a different background. The sexual attraction is going to be a big part that unites the couple. Benedict will be more energetic, full of life and can work with her on a professional level and/or travel together for work, award season, regular vacations. They respect each others goals and ambitions, and don’t stand in the way of their attempts to achieve them. Sexually, their body vibrations match well, and they’ll have that physical bond that is hard to break for couples that are destined for one another. Overall, this girl and the passion they will have for each other is the real deal.

Now we just have to wait and see…it sounds like this could be an Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton 2.0 situation. I think with the way CB has gone haywire with all these BC posts is the warm up for when Ms. Exotic-Writer comes into the picture.

      • Funky says:

So the creepy thing about this is it describes me exactly, 100pc.

      • HBIC says:

        @V.L.719
Wow. I guess anyone is better than Octopussy at this point in time.

Hopefully Ben will ditch Octo and find this “exotic” person he’s meant for… good luck to the both of them!

      • Madly says:

I know some people are really into psychic readings, but I chalk them up to entertainment. I had a few done in my lifetime and nothing came of it.

I think he’ll wise up soon enough and find someone he wants to have a family with. I am not really worried about that part of it. I am just annoyed that I am being taken for an idiot.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @madly
A good psychic is hard to find. It’s difficult to predict the future, since we all have free will and that can change things day in and out.

Some things are fated to happen to us in our lifetimes… yes, fate does exist. But the road one takes to get there is their own.

For a good psychic, get a recommendation from a friend. Or do your research. And take things with a grain of salt (some things will happen, and some things won’t). In my experience, psychics are good at reading your personality. But unless something is fated or will happen to you in a short period of time, a lot of times they are speculating on your future path or are giving you an idea of where you are at in the present.

        @V.L.719
I will double the wow! in this post.

      • Name says:

This is interesting. A friend of mine who claims to have this sort of talent ( I take it w a grain of fun salt) said something VERY similar. 2016 or a tad after. The only difference she seemed to ” get was that she was/ will be a student, in healthcare BUT will be doing writing on the side related to that ( that will gain steam as like a parallel to her health care thing). And that the age diff is more than 5 months, but a few yrs and for sure under 10 ( meaning most people won’t consider it weird like a 21yo)

      • V.L.719 says:

        @Name
Do you know more details? Don’t mean to question like this, but someone on another thread who appears legit has come forward in her details about his “twin flame”. This woman claims to work in Holistic Healthcare.

    • moodgirl says:

@Felice – I think someone is on the payroll.

  11. Felice says:

Last night I dreamed that Sophie had a photoshoot with People to show her ring and BC wasn’t in the photos with her.

  12. tasha_nat says:

Love the Michael Caine impression, but I have overdosed on this man, so much so that I’m side eyeing everything he’s doing and I don’t find it enjoyable anymore. Sigh. I just don’t want to feel played, you know?

@ohhey I think the interspersed videos from tiff and his current behavior are highlighting the differences in personality.

Let’s see if he can put his game face back on.

    • EscapedConvent says:

Has anyone seen Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon having a “Michael Caine-off”? It’s in a trailer I saw for “The Trip.” They were both dead on.

  13. KMS1083 says:

When did he film that? His hair looks longer than what it does now. Was it during comic con? I know there is an interview he did with someone around that time that hasn’t come out yet. The reason I ask, is because he is his normal, goofy self there.

  14. Renee says:

Question: if this engagement is partially for PR, shouldn’t SH show up with him tonight, esp since he’s won an award? I really don’t know how PR works but wouldn’t that seem like a good idea? Or am I still out in left field and trying to apply logic to an effed-up situation?

    • aly says:

We’ll see if she’s with him, but I’m pretty sure she’ll be with him at NY premiere

    • Lindy79 says:

I genuinely don’t think its for PR. I think he connected with her and they got engaged (whatever your feelings are on their relationship). I think pride and ceremony made him to the Times thing, he thought he was being clever and it would die down but it backfired and the Weinstein PR are running with it, posting stuff about her, probably demanding she accompany him, he/she doesn’t want to and it’s pissing him off. He only has himself to blame, he lost any control over his personal life the minute he approved it for publication an especially right before this promo..WTF was he thinking??

Whether she arrives or not, lets just hope he sucks it up an stops acting like a stroppy git.

      • Lucifer says:

aww i thought u r on PR thing

      • **sighs** says:

I think it’s half pr and half “appropriate match” with a healthy dose of get the crazy fans off my back.

        My 2 cents.

      • Felice says:

        @sighs +1

      • aly says:

Lindy…I don’t know, I wish I could believe it’s not PR, but the timing, Ben suddenly losing his mind and putting up an ad, knowing what would happen can’t convince me of the lack of an ulterior motive.
I tend to agree with **sighs**

      • Lindy79 says:

I think its being used for PR definitely and hell, maybe the actual engagement is pure PR, but I dunno. I never thought he’d go that far to completely fabricate something and involve his parents. I think it’s more settling to get what you want. We’ll never find out anyway.
All I know is, tiredness or not, he is acting as far from a man who is in love and is about to marry as I can imagine.
        #Jawseyes

      • Lucifer says:

The fact that parents are not involved directly says alot. hell again i was the one who was in the dec weddng n preggers train at first. Sowe dnt know n never gonna find out.

      • **sighs** says:

        #jawseyes

        Love it

      • FLORC says:

        Lindy
        Fully agree.

    • MissMary says:

@Renee: If they’re going to play the “I am serious private actor man” angle… no. I still smell PR all over this but who knows. Maybe this is how they get down and in 80 years they’ll be tottering around on their flying zimmer frames, ignoring one another and having their cephalopod based grand romance still. *side eyes ’em anyway*

      • Lucifer says:

That last line killed me 😀 😀 😀

      • Sooth says:

She had a strategic lone drop off right in front of fans at the LFF. The only other people arriving in cars were cast/crew and very few of them had the conspicuous lone ride, not to mention the umbrellaed escort all the way along the red carpet.
She has no problems with the spotlight at all and tbh I’m rather stunned that people don’t realise that.

      • MissMary says:

@Sooth: It’s mostly her stans that want to keep the narrative of BC’s “ladylove” *cough* being a delicate, shy flower who shuns publicity and would NEVER seek attention.

If that’s the case, she picked the wrong line of work going into experimental theatre.

      • Felice says:

Fans knew who she was and rolled their eyes at her at LFF.

MissMary, I know you avoid that certain website like the plague but the write-ups of events are good.

      • moodgirl says:

@MissMary – Observing their behavior they aren’t doing a whole lot of getting down.

      • MissMary says:

NGL, Felice… since I read two of the links posted here today, I’m dipping my toe in very gingerly, lol.

        @Moodgirl: *SNORT* True.

      • Felice says:

Read the write up of LFF. It’s so beautiful, it brought a tear to my eye.

to look through tags, add /tagged/LFF/page/9

      • FLORC says:

So, observing their behavior they’re not getting down. And if they were all over each other wouldn’t the comments be more towards try-hard behavior? I’m reading no shades of gray here. Couldn’t it be he just doesn’t like to be so showy in public? HW has total control over this and BC is feeling uncomfortable about it?

      • Catherine says:

I’ve only seen gifs of LFF, but at all the big screenings guests get dropped off at the same place. And in hindsight what would have happened if they engagement hadn’t been announced? The last BC thread on this site before the announcement, there were comments that they weren’t even serious. Maybe they both feel self-conscious and don’t want the attention, that would make more sense. And as he said announcing it was what he would have done if he wan’t well known.

      • Sooth says:

The footage of all the arrivals onto the red carpet, with the exception of people like weinstein (ergh) all the people who had a chauffeur driven lift directly onto the red carpet were cast and crew or partners of (who obviously travelled with the their partners, otherwise what’s the point) The cars dropped them off right in front of the barriers where the fans and press are. Every other guest (john hurt etc) walked onto the carpet. If she’d walked, carried her own umbrella, I bet nobody would’ve noticed her. To say she did this because she didn’t want the attention is beyond laughable. She couldn’t have got more attention if she tried. Arriving a few minutes before him? Please. And don’t get me started on the catwalk down the stairs of the hotel..

    • Cate says:

@Renee You’d think so, but I just think they might go the GOOP route. She never really did the red carpet thing with Chris Martin. But watch them prove me wrong. I am even questioning myself as I write this, because I can’t imagine him leaving her at home at things like the Golden Globes or Oscars. And she was at LFF too, at least she was visible, although flying solo of course. IDK, I’m still confused.

      • Renee says:

@Cate… That LFF nonsense was just weird. I couldn’t hazard a guess at what they’ll do but I know I’ll side-eye whatever they do because I don’t believe this is all genuine. I will prob never believe anything he says either.

      • Aiofe says:

Hmm yeah but that was a HW power couple. Hunter? She needs a generator to light up the home counties to match them. Gwyneth didn’t walk with him bc she had her own image and career to maintain. Hunter? Nah hahahaha. Unless she’s paranoid bc she knows her career is so small potato her man will overshadow her cv.

      • aly says:

@Cate: the Globes probably, but I can’t help thinking he’ll bring his mother to the Oscars. Real relationship or not.

      • Lindy79 says:

Based on her previous comments someone posted here, she doesn’t want to be seen as using his fame…how will not holding his hand on a red carpet prevent people thinking that? She’s with him regardless of whether she absails down the side of the building or walks up the carpet alone doing Diana eyes or goes in the side entrance with a group.
I found it VERY strange she walked up solo at LFF, and not with his friends and family…his future wife. Just STOP it and act normal ffs

        http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mbjaxkrJzi1roglxl.gif

      • MissMary says:

I keep coming back to all those “fame imbalance” couples who STILL manage a private relationship AND are seen in public AND who aren’t seen as “odious” and “coat tailing”. In fact, almost every H’wood couple except a small handful has one famous partner and not so famous or flat out “unknown” in terms of fame partner. And no one side eyes them (well…we may side eye Elsa Pataky…) because *gasp* they don’t act like twits about it and just live their lives. But then again… most of those aren’t PR *cough* *adds chinstrap to tin foil hat and goes to conspiracy train’s dining car*

      • Sooth says:

        @lindy

        “Diana eyes”

OMG yes!! That’s EXACTLY what she does!

      • Cate says:

@Renee, indeed, it was very weird, esp. with the engagement a few weeks later. It was like ‘SEE ME’ oh wait, ‘DON’T LOOK AT ME’. And she also wasn’t at the after party. Very tiresome. Me not understand, me too dumb to comprehend.

Agreeing with everyone, they should light up and just act a bit normal. It’s perfectly possible. You’re together or you’re not, come on. Famous, smamous…

      • lindy79 says:

Having seen the gif of her getting out of the car it was ALL i could see.

“There were three of us in this marriage…Cumby, me and the octopus”

      • Cate says:

        Hahahaha!

      • moodgirl says:

@ – lindy79 She sounds utterly foolish and selfish. She cannot celebrate the achievement of another without thinking of herself. I bet she makes an awful friend.

    • moodgirl says:

@Renee – Maybe he doesn’t want her to show up, he wants to do all the talking. Or saying nothing as it is. Maybe they have to get their stories straight. Maybe they feel by not talking about her or her absence will keep people watching, just part of the PR strategy. She is simply for show. Or she is pregnant.

  15. Aiofe says:

Hey, there’s a rumor on EB that Hunter didn’t even graduate from Oxford: she’s not on the alumni list. Can that get confirmed? LOL if true. Another thing off her PR driven profile you can cross off

    • Lucifer says:

i m pretty sure dint complete. else they would have portrayed her as Oxfrod graduate, not “went to oxford”

    • MissMary says:

She *attended* Oxford. She is not a graduate. At least, that’s how she was listed up until this late summer/early Autumn. Maybe that was an error and she really did graduate? WHo knows. I don’t buy it though.

      • Aiofe says:

damn, couldn’t even complete a degree where all she had to do was learn two languages, which many people can do without even attending university. #notsosmart

      • Felice says:

Literally everyone else in the world besides America can speak 2 languages or at least have a good understanding of a second language. (I’m British-American btw so before people think I’m bashing.)

      • Aiofe says:

Right, including in Octopussy’s beloved France, where you’re expected to learn several languages AU LYCEE

      • aly says:

I read somewhere, back when the clusterf*ck started, that she studied both French and Italian at Oxford…

      • Felice says:

I studied Spanish, French, and Latin and only stuck with Spanish since I live on the west coast now.

      • Aiofe says:

Yes but studying doesn’t mean you graduated.

      • aly says:

I’m graduated in both English and Spanish, it’s not a walk in the park, but it’s not astrophysics either, it can be done:)

      • OhDear says:

I wouldn’t say she’s not intelligent based on her not graduating. She still did get *into* Oxford, meaning that she had to get the requisite A-levels and such.

      • Sooth says:

I expect she went to a school were you were ‘favoured’ for Oxbridge. You get fast tracked when in private education. I didn’t care because I didn’t want to go there. Everyone I knew from Oxbridge was a dullard, a snob or as dumb as a bag of hammers.

      • aly says:

OhDear: Don’t know if it was an answer to my post, but I absolutely don’t think that a BA, MA, Ph.D = being smart. I apologize if it came out that way, it was not my intention.

      • moodgirl says:

@Felice – Isn’t it sad that a large percentage of Americans can barely speak English? If I hear one more person say “I SEEN a truck drive by…” I am going to scream.

      • Elysian says:

Sooth – She went to St Paul’s, didn’t she? They send a huge proportion of their pupils to Oxford.

In my experience (state school, graduated from Oxford this year), people from private schools aren’t so much fast tracked as better prepared for interview and more likely to apply in the first place. When I was taking A Levels we were told that we could apply if we really, really wanted to, but not to expect to get in. We weren’t prepared for the interviews either and had no idea what to expect. Two of us ended up with places and that was more than my school had ever sent before. However, once I got there and started meeting people who’d been to exclusive private schools, I found out that they’d had a completely different experience. The vast majority of their year groups had applied, they’d been encouraged and prepared and been told how to approach the interview to maximise their chances of getting an offer (that said, quite a few of them still whinged about ‘state school quotas’ and ‘private school being a disadvantage’). St Paul’s was one of those. Just looking at their website now, last year they got a THIRD of their pupils into Oxbridge!!

The tutors, who are ultimately the ones who decide who gets an offer, frankly don’t give a shit where you came from (at least the ones I knew). They’re going to be teaching you for three/four years, so they want students who are going to be keen to learn and able to handle the material. It’s a self-selecting and self-perpetuating process though – people who think (or are told) they have practically no chance of getting in aren’t going to apply in the first place and a lot of successful candidates go back to their schools to give advice to applicants in the following years, so the support and preparation is there for the next cohort.

I’d like to think I’m not a snob or dumb as a bag of hammers, but looking how much I’ve just rambled on, I could believe the dullard part. 😉

      • smara says:

@ Elysian. Congrats! May I ask, was your state school one of the few remaining grammars? I hope that you will go back and give students like yourself the encouragement and support to apply. I am both a snob and dumb as a box (?) of hammers (no oxbridge here) so I’m just going to burnish my feeble ego on your achievement! Deal?

      • **sighs** says:

        You sound lovely, Elysian.

      • Elysian says:

smara – Thank you! It was bloody hard!
My school wasn’t a grammar – I’m from the wrong part of the country for that. It wasn’t a bad school though, just your bog-standard comprehensive! I went back a couple of times while I was still studying and am doing my best to help a few applicants at the moment while they gear up for interviews. They’re all a lot smarter than me though!
And although you sound smart and completely non-snobbish, deal!

**sighs** – **blushes** So do you.

      • Lindy79 says:

Elysian, that’s so kind of you to help future applications prepare!
And huge congratulations on graduating! x

      • icerose says:

of course you do realise that there is another Oxford University called Oxford Brookes so saying you studied at Oxford does not necessarily mean you went to the Oxbridge.

      • Elysian says:

Thanks, Lindy! And I wish I could do more – they really deserve it. I just know how reassuring it would have been for me just to speak to someone who’d been through the whole thing before. And graduating is such a HUGE relief!

With regards to Sophie, I can’t really comment about her time at Oxford. Wiki says she graduated, but is that reliable enough, especially with the flurry of activity on her page? I know a few people who studied Modern Languages and the course seems very heavily focused on literature, but part of the course is to spend a year abroad in the relevant country.
Brookes is a very good university as well, but doesn’t carry anywhere near the same prestige (or have the same reputation for elitism!). Oxford and Cambridge are just a bit weird like that!

      • solanaceae (Nighty says:

Oh my, not British, never attended Oxbridge, but I do speak 6 languages and I have a degree in English/ German, a post-degree in Translation and a masters in English / Spanish (none of these languages are my mother tongue)… Why the idea that attending Oxbridge is just for bright people? Makes it sound like all other universities aren’t good…

        *eyerolling*

      • Isadora says:

Can we please stop bashing Humanities and Arts? I get it that you want to make a point about Sophie Hunter, but I don’t think it’s necessary to put language studies down in the process. As Elysian pointed out you don’t only learn the language when you study Modern Languages (where she specialised in French and Italian) because as Aiofe said, you’d hardly need a university for that. At my university you’d have to learn Latin too when you study a language as it comes in handy with grammar and in case of Romance language also regarding vocabulary and etymology. And then there wouldn’t only be courses to ensure that you are proficient in the language you study (meaning: C2 level = “mastery or proficiency”, which is the highest, in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), but also courses about linguistics, translation, culture and of course literature. Speaking a language is one thing, reading for example À la recherche du temps perdu and writing a scientific paper about it in French is another. I don’t want to pretend it’s harder than it is, it’s definitely doable with a certain amount of talent and effort. But so are nearly all other academic studies. For me studying mathematics would probably be impossible as I’m really not talented in that area, but I think there are plenty of mathematicians out there who truly suck at learning languages or interpreting literature. That doesn’t mean that anybody is smarter than the other. Likewise it also doesn’t mean that studying languages has less worth than studying astrophysics.

    • Ingrid says:

If she had a degree, they would have said it. “She has a BA (or something) from Oxford”.

I never say “I attended this and that university”, I say “I have a M.Sc.”

      • Aiofe says:

        same here 🙂

      • moodgirl says:

If she didn’t graduate we will hear about.

      • MissMary says:

@Moodgirl: Up until a month or so ago, her CV said “attended” and never graduated. And it was even discussed that she didn’t get her degree there so… grain of salt that maybe it was a mis-speak or mis-quote that got around, but I’d be interested in knowing if someone in PR is trying to pass her off as a graduate when she’s not. Speaking AS someone with an advanced degree, I don’t think not graduating means anything in terms of intelligence or ability. It just means you didn’t graduate for whatever reason (choice, circumstance, etc). But if someone is trying to plump up her image… *side eye*

      • moodgirl says:

@MissMary – I sorry but, intelligence aside, if she didn’t do the work she didn’t do the work.

  16. Aiofe says:

Hmmm….is his/her/Weinstein PR team using fake twitter accounts to make her sound all edumacated and like she has an IQ higher than a turnip?

    http://eggsbenedish.tumblr.com/post/102568511148/a-bit-of-pr-analysis

    • aly says:

Well….that *is* interesting. Definitely. I had no idea people thought Ben was gay, tbh. But yeah…PR

      • Aiofe says:

open a shill twitter account, mention the gay rumor, then use first shill account to refute. rinse and repeat. classic, basic move.

and as for the rumor, i don’t think it was ever serious. he acts effeminate at times, but some straight men are like that. also, the whole ‘sherlock is gay!!!’ thing probably influences that idea a lot (once again, going back to the fandom problem)

      • MissMary says:

The “gay” rumor came out because some dudebros were doing the “ha ha ha British guys all act gay” thing on some sites and when he played Guilliam in TTSS and the character was gay, more folks ran with it.

      • moodgirl says:

I love TTSS although I had to watch it several times to understand the story because I never read the book. I also love it when BC says “…now get off my back” while being reamed by the group because it appears that he has no teeth in his mouth.

    • MissMary says:

Hee hee, they said “to blave”. *ahem* Oh, PR firms and agencies alike can and do have twitter accts, just like they have interns and whomever to check out gossip sites, all to post info to spin in their client’s favor. Too many wtf tweets? Here come the “OH they are SO PERF” tweets. Too many posts about a weird rumor? Here come the “omg y’all… my cousin knows so and so and they said it’s total bull because they had drinks and so and so poured their hearts out to them.”

      • aly says:

LMAO MissMary how true…re: omg y’all
and the classic: you’re delusional/conspiracy theorist

      • Lindy79 says:

I’m not ashamed to say I got “to blave” immediately.

      • **sighs** says:

Ok. I’ll admit it. I dont get the “to blave”. Who wants to explain it to me?

      • MissMary says:

**sighs**: It’s from The Princess Bride. Miracle Max is trying to get out of healing Westley (who is mostly dead) and claims that Westley is groaning “to blave, which means to lie!” instead of “true love”.

      • Madly says:

True story here. There was an actor who accidentally shared a secret while drunk that was overheard by some others and it gets out there. Then a gossip blog beats up said actor for how stupid they were in both the secret and sharing it. I heard from someone who worked on film press who said that the blog was going to be paid off and show him in a more favorable light. The person telling me only did so because he actor’s people were super shady about the whole thing. Then just days later, this same blog posts nice things about the actor’s career. Other posts come that covers for his life and turns what could have been a career ending mistake into a lot of nothing by sweeping it under the rug. This is complete with making fun of the fans who were only saying what the blogger said in their first post. And this is a blogger that likes to talk about how they are both amused and above the celebrity stuff. Moral of the story, trust your gut and common sense than other printed opinions. This town is said to be built on smoke and mirrors for a reason.

      • Madly says:

Am attempting to tell a story about a gossip site, let’s see if it gets through.

      • Madly says:

Another story. I once was in a popular dog park in LA and in comes in an actor, a publicist, and a photographer, they chat for a few minutes and the actor plays with his dog while the publicist moves out of the way and the photographer takes some pictures. The actor and publicist leave and the photographer stays. Turns out he was a pap, and the photo was later seen in people magazine.
And a funny aside Shannon Elizabeth was there and the photographer ignored her. Ha!

      • Sooth says:

Is people a trash tabloidy thing then?

      • Madly says:

@sooth, people buys photos from paps and photo agencies just like anywhere else. They are just more aligned to publicists.

This campaign is picking up steam and gaining wider spread public knowledge, whic exactly what the announcement really intended.

      • MissMary says:

@Sooth: People is a “respectable” tab. Supermarket check out line type thing, top shelf, but pretty much everything in it is gossip or “encouraged” by PR to benefit their clients.

@Madly: 0_0 BRB, I need to get some tea and settle in… *interested*

I’ve seen stories about celebs doing the pap walk intentionally, or arranging “candid” shots. I think an infamous one was Pierce Brosnan at LAX going suuuuuuuuuuuuper sloooooooooooooooow with his luggage by the paps…

      • moodgirl says:

@sooth – In the US one can get into Ivy League or upper tier universities by being very bright and hard working, having a lot of money even though they are dumb as a box of rocks, legacy or being related to a previous graduate and having a big name, like celebrities, even though they again don’t have the qualifications it brings prestige to the school when the “star” brags that they attended the university.

A good example is George W. Bush. He was so dumb he couldn’t get into the University of Texas which is a mid – grade public school. So, he gets into Yale because his grandfather was alumni.

      • Felice says:

That really makes me wonder if Perez Hilton genuinely likes B or if someone paid him to not trash him. I’ve never seen Perez say anything really hurtful about him or he just thinks B is gay.

      • **sighs** says:

Interesting Madly. I’ve definitely heard stories like that. I will say that there were 2 different items on this one gossip site involving someone ahem in this thread. One that he liked escorts and one that he was into BDSM. I can’t remember which one, but soon after there was a “kindness” item about him (that very obviously couldn’t have *been*ahem* about him) but it was obvious it was pr sweeping in. And I always wondered if it was just pr not wanting that rumor out there, or if it was actually true and they were getting paid off. I wish I could remember which one it was. It may have been the first one.

      • MissMary says:

@**sighs** NGL, I’m prone to believe the escort rumor (and the BDSM one but that may just be me lol)–a LOT of men, esp men with high stress jobs, busy jobs where they have little free time or little time to “meet the one”, hire escorts for events to be a plus one (esp from very high class agencies that cater to the powerful/famous). And some dudes are just down with that and not having to deal with an LTR. I can see BC hiring company for events (Mystery blondes, anyone?) or just for a plus one (or to get some). But I did legit guffaw when I saw the kindness BIs show up soon after the BDSM ones… Not very subtle there.

      • Catherine says:

MissMary, your comment about twitter is reminding me about another internet meltdown in the summer.

      • Sandi says:

**sighs**: the site you’re talking about isn’t taken seriously by anyone. Madly speaks the truth but not all gossip outlets are addressed because, quite frankly, there’s too many out there. You worry about the ones that may spread to more ‘legitimate’ or well known places.

TL, DR you can’t pay off everyone and monitor the 1,000s of outlets, especially with someone who has a smaller PR team.

      • **sighs** says:

Sandi, I realize that one isn’t the most reliable, and I think half their stuff is made up, but the other half seem to come true. And other sites do reference that one a lot, so I think that one is fairly well monitored.

      • MissMary says:

@Catherine Is the meltdown one to do with a certain other British actor, lol?

      • Sandi says:

**sighs**: I can say that particular place generally makes up blinds based on what is already out there at the time. You’ll see stuff reused word for word and anyone can submit tips. It just doesn’t hit anything mainstream or popular enough to be concerned about. You’ve got to pick your battles, and an already publicly discredited niche place isn’t a priority.

Pretty much, when it comes to PR, it’s crazier than people think it is but also easy to over-think it too. There’s so much out there, you spend your time wisely.

      • gg says:

I legit squeed out loud at that kindness blind!! If everything else on that site is BS, please please please let that one be true. (Although for the record, I also believe the one about escorts although not the BDSM one because I don’t believe they ever even dated.)

And speaking of blinds, did you all see this one (second one) from Page Six, dated Oct 8? Hmmmmm
        http://pagesix.com/2014/10/07/which-music-exec-was-caught-with-an-intern-in-a-mens-room/

      • MissMary says:

@gg: Three guesses who the popular pick for that BI is, and the first two don’t count, lol. I’ve seen it talked about on a few sites over the past month and not all the sites are BC fans, but his name DOES come up every time.

    • k says:

How do you know she has a low IQ? Where is the evidence to indicate that? Not completing a degree doesn’t count (which I’m mentioning since you judged her for that in a previous comment). There are plenty of reasons why someone wouldn’t be able to finish a degree that have nothing to do with competence.

      • Isadora says:

I totally agree. Nobody should say that someone has low intelligence because they don’t have a degree. And in Hunter’s case we don’t even know if she does or doesn’t have a degree. On Wikipedia they say she has (and she is listed as Oxford alumni). No idea if it’s true… But I’m somewhat surprised that a few investigative souls haven’t already checked some directory or lists (if there is something like that) and found out her exact academic title or graduation year.

    • Sooth says:

OMG the article from the people. Wtaf.

I’ve just read it again..and I’ve come to add another wtaf.
      I’m literally speechless.

      • MissMary says:

People is actual PR, 24/7. Even the “negative” articles are spin control to help an image (like “okay, I admit x happened! Look, I’m owning it, being a mature grown up!” type spin). There’s a reason they’re also known as Knee Pads.

      • Sooth says:

I am so shocked. Do people not see through this? And what does knee pads mean?

      • Madly says:

Haven’t checked it out as it is all fiction. What does it make up this time.

      • Sooth says:

It’s the most overcooked and overdone gushing article about how incredible SH apparently is. So yeah..fiction. just baffling.

      • Lucifer says:

i dint read that. got terrified by the cmnts, thnk ya all

      • aga says:

People has helped to “make” Amal, now HW and Benedict are trying the same with Sophie.
        Unfortunately, they lack some subtlety.

      • Lucifer says:

Amal’s left 3rd toe has more accomplishments than the one whose name shall not be ottered. At the risk of ssounding shallow i ll say that toe looks better thn octopussy too

      • moodgirl says:

Now, close your eyes and imagine what the atmosphere would be like if BC had not announced his engagement in the Times. He would have very little publicity. Almost none. NOTHING. He is overshadowing more established actors who have a greater chance of being nominated and or winning. All for dating a two – bit theatre director that he has been dating five months.

Now, can anyone honestly say that this was not planned, probably five to six months ago. If you can’t add this together – the way they behaved while “dating”, the quicky engagement and public announcement for a man who claimed to want privacy. I have one word for it: FAKE. It’s bu$! Sh$×. No matter what we think about BC he planned and pulled off this BS, most likely with the help of HW. If you can’t see this then you just don’t want to. It is so obvious it’s sad. And he is angry because he sold every piece of himself for a trophy. Ugh. Double ugh. Just gross.

      • moodgirl says:

@sooth – How can you distinguish the Head Nurse from the rest of the staff? Because she has dirty knees. Get it? One needs knee pads for BJ’s.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @moodgirl
You know… as much as I do think Ben and Octopussy are actually an item… I can’t disagree with your post here. Your theory sounds on point.

And that’s pretty sad. I think the fandom is pretty shocked that he’s sold out this way. But what’s interesting is that you can see it on his face that he knows he shouldn’t have done this. I think that the longer this goes on, the more he’s going to regret it. That resting b*tch face of his is here to stay for now.

Too bad it’s not Ben’s year to win. He’ll get the nod, but not the Oscar. I still think his relationship with her will go poof before then, though.

PS – I also don’t think he’s bought her a ring yet. But if she does show up on Monday night… she’ll be flashing something. I hope it’s a cubic zirconia.

      • Sandi says:

@GeeMoney: he’s definitely miserable. He won’t make it all the way to the Oscars imo.

      • MissMary says:

@Geemoney: It’ll be a “Loaner” ring from a jeweler or something expensive-looking but CZ or just plain cheap so when this is all over, it’s a drop in the bucket. And I totally agree that he realizes what he’s done (probably had an idea going in)… It’s very hard to reconcile “this guy” with the same one who was worried about fans being cold while he gave an interview for NPR just a few weeks before this announcement was made.

@moodgirl: WORD. All this. Much as I love his acting (nine times out of ten anyway), I can admit we’d barely hear anything about him right now if not for this odd timed engagement.

      • aly says:

        @Moodgirl: totally agree with you

@GeeMoney: I think Benedict is a good man, I don’t think he is happy about this…as for winning, the race is long, anything might happen (even though I think Keaton will probably win)

      • Aiofe says:

Sandi what do you mean he won’t make it?

      • moodgirl says:

You cannot not see it. All the PR for SH has to come from the powers that be. It is is all part of the plan because it is TOO BIG not to be. And if they hadn’t put the announcement in the paper who would the press be talking about.

This woman is getting more hype than the actors and actresses who are in the actual movies. No Reece Witherspoon because there isn’t enough space due to SH. This is an ultra professional job well beyond what Karon could produce.

      • GeeMoney says:

        @aly
He is a good man, and that’s why it’s hard to see him go through this. He’s better than this – we all know it, and so does he. But I think this may be a life lesson he needs to learn, or something like that. I think once he goes through it, he’ll go back to being himself.

People should always remember: do what you love, and never be afraid to be anything less than who you are. You’ll live a much happier life if you always go this route.

But I’m telling you… it’s not his year to win. I’d bet that the Oscar will go to Keaton or Murray. Ben will get one someday… I think it’s in his future. Just not now. 😃

      • Victoria says:

        @Gee Money

Speaking of lessons, another person on another thread said that he’s goin through some kinda “karma challenge”. I think once he meets whoever this writer V.L.719 is talking about he’ll be back to the Benedict we all know he is.

I’m with HBIC with the “wow” factor. Just…wow is all I got for that lol.

      • blended says:

i fully believe he is good person who’s found himself in circumstances he can’t handle, and with people who he can’t say no to.

Spacey and Rickman are only pretending to be dead in Benedict The Movie © they’re getting tips from Sean Bean in the Boot in return for helping him stay alive till the end. Hiddles on the other hand dies, bunny informed the 3 Chris’s but they’re more concerned about the latest hottest man alive but is unaware that Benedict has hijacked That as well as part of his social media take over and has Rigged it so he’ll win instead.

We need a hero for this film any ideas?

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Ellen, dead like Captain Nichols dead, which is really most sincerely dead, or dead like Adam dead, which is undead, or dead like Loki dead?

      • Ellen says:

@liliacFlowers he’s dead like Captain Nicols. Yes he rode into battle with Benedict on his unicorn and face death in the eye.

I’ve finally got what what the octopus reference to Sophie was so now a character change; she’s still a hostage but now she’s like the blonde woman from Game of Thrones who like her dragons. Instead of “Stay away from my dragons” Sophie will cry to Benedict “stay away from my octopuses” of course he has them locked up somewhere so Sophie can’t escape

      • joe spider says:

But did you actually see Capt Nicholls’s body? Yes the look of terror, yes the empty saddle as the horse gallops on, but………………

@ Ellen. I was thinking of a Law and Order episode. There’s a murder! A publicist for up and coming actor Benbot Cumbersmoo has been killed. One of the cumberwives is suspected! Turns out Cucumber Squash himself was paying for a fanbase. Tumblr awash with cash BORROWED FROM THE MOB!! Crumplebum wanted to stop but…you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. The mob come after him. A frenetic car chase through the Hay festival. Books flying, elitist snobs ducking out of the way! Ben leaps from the car. And with a kung fu kick to the crotch, foils the bad guys! Full circle a movie is made from Bendly Cumbertron’s anguish. He finally wins that Oscar for John Malkovich-ing and playing himself. And he thanks…WILWIPT. And… scene.

    • Pinky says:

Is it just me, or are they bringing Hiddles up more often than usual?

      • icerose says:

no you are right.i think they are taking no chances with Bendy’s metamorphism and using Tom as a back up click bait. That’s why all the captions on the links to impressions include Hiddles’s name

      • Allegra says:

Maybe it happens because Tom and BC are friends, they are talented and the midia loves both them.

      • Allegra says:

        @icerose:

        You´re right!
They are doing this all the time, to get BC and Tom´s fans to click in their articles and videos.

      • Catherine says:

        And it works doesn’t it?

  20. Jsilly4 says:

That was funny. He did pretty good. I’m awful at impressions so anyone other than me is good.

And I think nobody knows what’s going on with BC because nobody on blogs or celeb sites actually knows him.

Isn’t it possible to like and even drool over celebs and have them on your Five Fantasy list and not get upset if they date someone or get engaged, get married or have a baby? It’s inevitably going to happen so why all the drama and hysterics? You don’t know these people personally. If there could be serial killers whose wives didn’t know or child molesters in the family, etc. how are you going to know intimate feelings of celebs? Seriously! Because you’ve seen every movie and interview? SMH. I crush on James McAvoy and Charlie Hunnam and Chiwetal Ejiofor (sp?) but I’m not going to drive myself crazy if they have a personal life that is none of my business or knowledge. Don’t you want them to be happy? Why is that so hard for people to accept?

    • MissMary says:

No one here is in a froth about it (*side eyes tumblr*) but a lot of us DO think he has been acting weird compared to his usual public persona, has been for a while now, and has been giving some very fan-shamey interviews.

    • HBIC says:

Comments like these are pointless. I love it how people like this get on blog sites to complain about people speculating about the lives of celebrities by saying that “OMG, I don’t pretend I know this person and you shouldn’t either” and act like they are better than everyone else.

You are on a blog site reading this crap too, you know? You are no better (and no less nosy) than anyone else on here. And putting in your lame 2 cents on how no one knows anything about Cumberbatch’s life is just as bad as everyone else here who speculates about it.

      Rant over.

      • gg says:

The only thing better is when people complain about “OMG another story about x…you only do so many of these because they get you clicks!” Well hello, genius, you just clicked on the BLEEPING STORY.

      • angela says:

Yet there’s something whinny and entitled in the way the Cumhards or whatever claim knowledge on this guy’s life, like he wasn’t a real person but a joint stock company of whom you own a share. It’s aggressive and it has made this site pretty unpleasant. Keep things lighter and get some detachment.

    • Sooth says:

Oh dear. Is this the same hard of thinking person under a different name? Every day there’s one person whining that there’s hysterics over someone getting engaged. That is nothing to do with it. How many more times does need to be said? Anyone with the most rudimentary cognitive skills can see that things are far from average here. No guesswork or ‘knowledge’ of him needed. It’s just weird. Nobody is claiming to know why this is, of course nobody knows that, they’re just speculating. So please take your unwarranted hysterics somewhere else.

      • angela says:

Oh boy, adulthood is really wasted on some of you ! What’s so “weird” about it? That dude got engaged and he did not hold a referendum, asking you about his betrothed and how to behave about it? He owes you zilch.
Honestly, Will Ferrell should make a video about you, the way he did it on that Twihard. I would not be surprised if Cumberbatch would like to dissociate himself from this fringe faction of his fandom. He will easily become a joke, instead of a character actor, he’ll be that guys over which Cumberbitches foam at the mouth. Nobody’s going to throw Oscars at him for that.

      • Sooth says:

Stop being so silly, Angela. Ironically, you’re clearly a crazy fan here, foaming at the mouth about things you’ve clearly not understood. Calm down.
He chose to announce his engagement very publicly and he’s acting very weird now. Fact. What’s so hard for you to understand about that. And what on earth does him ‘owing’ have anything to do with it? Grow up a little and read what’s in front of you. Maybe then you can come back for a chat.

      • angela says:

Nope, you still did not make a case for your entitlement. And haha I’m not a fan. Proceed to find a partner in real life, lock the bedroom for a couple of days – it’s going to do wonders for clearing your head. Post, your obsession with this guy will turn into something appropriate and endearing.

      • Old Enough says:

        “Do not feed the Trolls”

    • Tara says:

Yeah, I like BC in general but am flummoxed by the passionate opinions about his engagement. I can’t imagine caring. At all. I can’t even imagine caring if it was my boyfriend Clive Owen or Timothy olyphant dumping me for some chick… Unless I was really dating them in real life. Also, have been binge reading harmless Scottish fiction, and all the characters place ads in the newspaper announcing their marriage. Maybe that’s not really what most people do these days… Or celebrities don’t do it… But when he says, he was being traditional it makes sense to me.

  22. betsy says:

Of course you wont stop writing about Benedict because it brings you more hits than anyone.
Nice audio interview today with Kermode and Mayo . Mayo mentioned Hiddleston pathetically showing off his Shere Khan impression on his show before Benedict was announced. Benedict enjoyed saying his was better because he’d won the role. Good on him. I’m sick of Hiddleston trying to muscle in.

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Betsy, muscle in on what? Firstly, while you seem to have taken BC seriously, he clearly was joking. Secondly, Tom has not done any shows of any sort since Top Gear in February so, no, he didn’t do a Shere Kahn impression right before BC got the part or even recently. Third, while Tom is not shy about voicing his love of Disney’s Jungle Book, he has never expressed a desire to see it remade or a wish to participate in any remake. If he had, Disney, with whom he does have a contract, would have found a place for him in its new version. Finally, George Sanders is Shere Kahn, always. Accept no substitute.

      • icerose says:

Well Lilacflowers said Kermode plays games-he was the one who Benedict supposedly told of for insulting Kiera and it went viral but it was a just a publicity joke and Benedict new all along he did not mean it and never corrected the story.
Kermode probably said it to bring in publicity for the interview and Benedict probably new what he was doing after all it is the Benny fall back PR approach.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Idris Elba is Shere Kahn in the new Disney Version; how dare he muscle in?

      • Sandi says:

Why would he ‘correct’ the story? It’s been on Youtube for years and Kermode did right away when the media dug it back up because he loves mentioning it. (Plus Kermode is a jerk, so who knows how ‘joking’ it really was LOL).

Some of this is getting really convoluted.

      • icerose says:

@Sandi after it went viral he was getting abuse on twitter from some of Benny’s fansabout it and he came out and said he was all a joke and Benny new it but I never heard Benny say anything to set the story straight. I just thought Benny might have come out at the time and explain that it was a bit of a joke.

    • jammypants says:

LOL! You mean everyone else muscling him in while he’s completely MIA working in some far off place completely off-radar? Stay pressed Betsy.

    • icerose says:

I just listened to the interview and it I was interesting to me that Benny has watched three Derek Jacobi version because after watching the advert I recognised some of the facial expressions that Jacobi used.
It is funny that UK critics do not think the film is any good but people in the USA do. I think it is probably because they do not know the story as well.
His take on the politics feels like a defence to explain the inclusion of the scene where Turing is supposedly accused of spying during the war which in fact never happened. The Cambridge Spy event which lead to the increase prosecutions of the law happened after WW11 and did not exist to the same degree during the war.
I wonder if he works to a script or whether he is just not as intelligent as people think. I just wish the Tom bit had come first because I had to listen to all the PR stuff first.

      • aly says:

The UK critics don’t like TIG? Huh…the reviews I’ve read are good

      • Catherine says:

Yes the reviews have been good, the only negatives I’ve seen are the script/story, taking liberties with historical fact, which would be the writing and direction.

      • icerose says:

Try the Independent ,Guardian and Telegraph -they have been pretty like warm about it. And the BBC were as well.
They are not saying it is bad just not anything special.

      • icerose says:

some review excerpts from UK papers
“”Post-Sherlock, the star’s natural intelligence is a gift but no longer a surprise, and his work here, entirely committed and clever though it is, feels so customised for awards voters to coo over, it may inspire rebellious thoughts””It’s the lack of risk here that grates most. Turing was homosexual, got convicted for gross indecency in 1952, and committed suicide because of his persecution and loneliness. Cumberbatch can suggest all this, but only in outline, because the film backs away in embarrassment from showing a single encounter between him and another man. This project inches around the private life of a genius: though he gets to narrate, it adopts an extremely proper attitude towards what should stay private, which might strike some viewers as closer to 1952’s prudishness than 2014’s relative open-mindedness. It shouldn’t matter in the slightest that Turing was gay. It shouldn’t have ended his career in disgrace the way it did. But one can be forgiven, surely, for wondering, and wanting to see, if it mattered to him.”The Imitation Game has one or two war-movie cliches and all the business about Soviet spying is cumbersome and unconvincing; the film creates a problem for itself with that. It is a problem for which Cumberbatch’s performance is an almost complete solution.””So The Imitation Game is a good film, yes, but I’m not going to say it’s a great film. It’s engaging at time but too often it’s boring, drama is crowbarred in to try and make it more exciting and most of the characters are caricatures – flat and unbelievable – with little character development.”

    • icerose says:

@Betsy you do realise that the interview they were talking about was a year ago when tom was promoting Thor 11 not a few months ago as they say so either he is telling a porky when he says a few months ago. he casting was only announced a few months ago so it sounds to me that he was using it as lead in to create a little bit of a moment for Ben to show his Turing.

      • Catherine says:

*Sighs* I think what Betsy meant was that she was fed up of Hiddles name being brought up again, not his fault….it’s obviously the media.

Having listened to that radio 5 interview, after BC talks at length about the persecution of homosexuals, Turing’s story, the tone of the film – or “pr stuff” as you call it Icerose – they both make the classic British jibe, that’s teasing which is WHAT WE DO, then he says “I don’t like competing with Tom he’s too much of a dear friend”.

      • icerose says:

@Catherine you are being very kind but Betsy has made similar type comments on Tom’s threads before.
I think was a set up for a jibe which Benny plays along with and then slides out of it at the end. Finishing a jibe with the classis he is my friend is also a classic British throw away to insure you do not give enough offence to cause a problem.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, and I’m sure BC wants a BAFTA for TIG. It wouldn’t do to be heard bashing a fellow actor over a voice part, especially if that actor has a BAFTA vote of his own and other friends likely to be in the same category, and, even if he doesn’t have a vote, he is well-liked and respected within the community that will be casting votes and it is a tight race this year. And, since everybody is worried about HW, HW wouldn’t appreciate controversy being stirred about insulting other actors.

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Betsy, Hiddleston’s was on Mayo’s show on October 25, 2013 during the TDW promotion, over a year ago and a good nine or ten months before Cumberbatch or Elba were cast as Shere Kahn. They ASKED him to do the voice of George Sanders in the part of Shere Kahn. There was absolutely no discussion of any new Jungle Book movie. Here is what he was impersonating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuFZNqI8mc8 And they praised his impersonation. The bulk of BC’s interview is about Turing and homosexuality when the topic of Shere Kahn is raised, instead of bashing Tom, as you claim, BC says he doesn’t want to be put into competition with Tom and that, while Tom was doing an impersonation of Sanders, he won’t be. None of them say Tom’s impersonation was pathetic. The statements that you pulled out of it were clearly jokes.

    • TotallyBiased says:

@Betsy–Please tell me you’re kidding! BendyBot has taken Tom as a blueprint for the last year. Tom did a famous childhood character in an animated movie, then BC. Tom is dancing and singing promote a movie ‘circus-bear’ style, suddenly so is BC. Even the Beyonce bit–in Return to Cranford behind the scenes, Michelle from Downtown Abbey and the other actress were teaching TH how to do the Single Ladies dance when they had waiting around time.
Tom famously does impressions in multiple interviews (mostly of different actors being ‘low-key’), then so does BC. Tom did Hollow Crown first, Tom just did a major Shakespeare production on the London stage where ticket sales were dominated by his fan girls and National TheatreLive broadcast was a lock….huh…guess who followed suit there.
Tom has talked about Jungle Book for years, as well.
My point here is that any male Brit actor can be set up to look as if they are imitating or competing with any other. You’ve got no call to slam TH because the shills are using his name to generate more attention.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well said, TotallyBiased. My post on the content of both podcasts, which differs greatly from what Betsy presented, seems to be sitting in long-term moderation.

      • jammypants says:

You forgot Comic Con. How could you? 😉

      • Josa says:

        Don’t forget Sesame Street.

      • Ellen says:

Is there a video of Hiddles doing the single ladies dance?

      • TotallyBiased says:

        @jammypants and Josa–
I DEEPLY apologise to both of you. How COULD I neglect to list BendyBot’s following TheHidds to both SDCC and the Cookie Monster’s environs. Just a couple more classic examples!

@Ellen, sadly, not that I’ve ever found. 🙁

    • Josa says:

Tom also said when he was applying for RADA, he had to sing for the audition, and he sang Bare Necessities. This is one of the song he loves most since childhood.

  23. 'P'enny says:

since Betsy beat me to it…. i just have to mention, Betsy please tell me your joking about Hiddles trying to muscle in!!!

  24. Madly says:

@madly, got several of those stories. I just think we have to remember that at the end of the day, he is hardly an innocent victim when it comes to his PR, he is probably participating in ways we are not even aware of.

    • Madly says:

Lol, meant missmary, not trying to talk to myself.

      • MissMary says:

LOL I was momentarily worried I’d accidentally signed in as you somehow and you were being polite and responding but not calling me out on the name change or something. *G* I think it’s the narrative that he’s somehow an innocent bystander in his PR that irks me more than almost anything some days in gossip-ville. He’s not a shy, innocent little lamb being led astray–he’s very ambitious and has spoken often of how important his career is to him. Maybe he’s making some bonehead decisions but he’s not unaware of what’s going on and he’s definitely participating at least in some respects.

      • Sandi says:

@MissMary: Just to clarify just in case, IA he’s not a shy lamb or a complete victim, just that I can’t see the WC putting this in Karon’s hands and Harvey is dirty, so it’s complicated.

And if Felice’s post above is accurate and he’s gullible, that’s a bad combination.

    • MissMary says:

He’s been called gullible by many co-stars and friends over the years, usually in a teasing way, but I’m wondering just how far his gullibility goes, esp when mixed with ambition. Maybe enough to convince him some wtf choices are good for his career?

      • Sandi says:

That’s what made Felice’s info interesting to me. I don’t know.

If he’s gullible, that would leave his management as more of a buffer than they should be. I’m not knocking Karon, she can’t compete with Harvey and doesn’t appear to have any experience in something like this.

      • MissMary says:

I absolutely think Karon is out of her league when it comes to this game, at least under Weinstein. She’s repped famous/big name folks in the past (Eddie Izzard, Bill Bailey) but that’s *nothing* like the rigors of an Oscar campaign, not definitely not a dirty one like HW is known to run.

      • Felice says:

I’m sure he has a little more help along with Karon.

      • icerose says:

On the BBC interview he said he found the Oscar red carpet uncomfortable to deal with or something similar which implied he was shy. Then he stated a sentence about the photo bomb and cut it off, To my mind he probably realised that it contradicted his first statement.
You are not shy and retiring if you can photo bomb with at a semi serious event with the world watching.

    • Gracada says:

@madly I’ve thought about that but he didn’t take into consideration the fans when he agreed.

@MissMary I think he’s a really smart man, but not high in the common sense thing. He doesn’t believe in “think before you speak”. It’s going to bite him, if his people don’t hear the teeth chomping.

I don’t think Karon is out of her league, but HW’s team is telling her what to do and what I think is “take a backseat”.

      • MissMary says:

@Gracada: I don’t think Karon is incompetent in the least but I do think she’s not an HW-style/level “player” in the PR game and if the rights had gone to anyone else, we’d be seeing a very different, Karon-helmed, PR campaign for BC right now, one that wasn’t so wtf.

      • lola says:

I think he agreed to some things in campaign (and perhaps thought that would be it), but it went further down the road. And he didn’t anticipate it would get so dirty.

      • aly says:

@lola….and the thing is that it’s likely to get dirtier. Campaigns can get pretty brutal

      • aly says:

        He looks good…but smile a little, Ben….:)

  25. Kazlock 1307 says:

Just to check the PR thing.(Please Weinstein let it be this!)
If this for PR shouldn’t they be seen together more?

    • MissMary says:

Sometimes just the word is enough. Stateside, it hit the “acceptable” tabs (People and InStyle) which are basically on earth solely to promote celebs at the behest of their PR. His name pops up more here now (it’s not ubiquitous but it’s definitely “in the air” more) and he’s about to do some talkies here and it gives them not only a new talking point (since he’s already done the goofy Ben one and the “aware of his sex appeal and laughing about it” one), but it lays the foundation for his “middle america” friendly image–a stable, engaged man who is Serious!Actor. She only needs to be trotted out once or twice to prove she exists and it feeds the narrative (again for middle america) that she’s a demure shy flower (why they’re trying to make her into the next Amal) and he’s a manly stud but a gentleman.

  26. blended says:

i think you guys complaining about his impressions are taking this waaaay too seriously. it’s just a fun exercise. he wasn’t going for a masterclass in impressions. plus they were quite good actually.
this is when celebrity gossip jumps the shark for me. when it gets into irrational bitching. his weird behaviour, and the slagging off of the fandom, some of his dumb comments are fair game, and he should get called out on those. but now if it’s just gonna be a hatefest, i’m not not on board.

    • MissMary says:

IDK… I thought his impressions were kind of funny. He was being “goofy Ben” which I kind of missed and it’s not like he was trying to sell the impressions as perfect or pass himself off for a role as any of the people. I think it was goofy and funny.

      • aly says:

Agreed. My best friend, who is a casual fan, sent me a text earlier saying, “wth is wrong with Ben? Is he alright? Shouldn’t he be happy right now?”

      • blended says:

yes that’s what i’m saying. he was being goofy, but people upthread are making serious critiques of his impression techniques or something.

      • Gracada says:

Even the pic with the Paddington Bear….I got all happy “Pointy!Batch is back!!!”

      • Pinky says:

Though.. let’s not forget that that picture was taken quite a while ago 😛

    • jammypants says:

I thought his impressions were really cute.

    • Catherine says:

Blended, I’m with you on this, I’ve noticed a backlash on this site with Benedict since the announcement, constant criticism as if there’s something wrong with him.

      • Sooth says:

Don’t be silly. Celebitchy has always been super snarky to everyone, BC included. There’s no malice here. Most people posting here have a real affection for him and don’t feel the need to bestow constant praise on him. I think most people thought this video was adorable and would like to see him return to that mood.

      • Lucifer says:

if you’re his PR tell him best of luck for his Christmas wedding. TO keep him the venue seaside 😉

  27. Pinky says:

Since I am just rewatching Legally Blonde… all I can think of is Warner Huntington III’s engagement..

“If I want to candidate to be a senator I need someone serious.. You have no idea of the pressure I am under. I have to think of my future… and what my family expects of me.”

*cough cough* well we know what happened to that engagement.. except that I hope Benny is not such an idiot…

    • Felice says:

BC couldn’t get an Elle Woods even when he was just fooling around.

(Elle and Amal are my muses)

  28. Maggie says:

Reading through some of these comments I am wondering if some of the people commenting could be in danger of going blind. All this “side-eyeing” and “eye-rolling” can’t be good for your eyes. Perhaps if y’all just looked at the facts from the right perspective you might see that all this furor is about a good man getting engaged, nothing more nothing less.

    • Sooth says:

Maggie, go back to IMDB. Being somewhere that doesn’t worship his every move and not question anything he does isn’t working for you.

    • aly says:

@Maggie, hmm…it’s simplistic. I see some overreacting, but also questioning of weird things. However you want to slice it, the announcment is giving Ben’s name more exposure and that’s a fact.

    • lola says:

Maggie you got lost AGAIN. I’d say that the right perspective for you is on IMdB not here. I can’t read stuff there because it feels most of you have severe cases of diabetes mellitus (which is more dangerous for loosing eyesight). So worry about your health not ours.

    • Felice says:

Maggie, I think it’s a “disservice” to criticize people’s opinions on a free celebrity gossip blog :p

  29. Linz says:

Loo Brealey talks about Benedict’s engagement.
“When asked how Molly and Sherlock shippers reacted to Cumberbatch’s engagement to Sophie Hunter, Brealey replied: “They were really sweet. I had a few heartbroken ‘I wanted it to be you’s,’ but on the whole they are just delighted for him.”

That is all she said. Didn’t say she was happy for him/them, didn’t congratulate him/them. So weird!!

    • gg says:

Exactly!!!! Everybody seems to be obsessed with what the fans think. What about the poor Johnlock shippers??? Jesus they think he’s a gay virgin…..

      (I kid, I kid…..I am a Johnlock shipper)

      • MissMary says:

@gg: LOL I’ve thought of them as a “couple” since reading ACD canon in my teens so J/S 5evah! (but unlike some tumblerites, I can differentiate between fantasy, reality, fact, and fiction, and also don’t get up in arms when what I think doesn’t match the reality of the actors portraying the characters, lol).

@Linz: She’s another one that’s been very mum. All of his friends who usually engage in social media have been schtum about the whole thing unless approached about fans. If they’d been asked about their feelings and said no comment, we’d get a no comment quote.

      • aly says:

        Me too @gg 🙂
If Ben appeared beaming with happiness, I would still think the relationship is used for PR, but I’d be happy for him…I think we all would.

    • Felice says:

That is so weird that she wouldn’t say anything about him. He gave her a big kiss on the cheek at that one convention.

  30. Felice says:

She’s not at the Hollywood Awards and someone said that B gave a weird interview. The hair looks great though, guys. Ace Ventura would be proud.

  31. OhHey says:

So here is his highness arriving at the Hollywood awards. Forgot to pack his smile, apparently, it must have fallen off at home because he’s so happy.
    http://newzcard.com/celebrities/xeFtD/benedict-cumberbatch

  32. Pinky says:

Well doesn’t he look happy at the awards..

    Twitter.com/jarettsays/status/533421389465115008

  33. OhHey says:

Are we sure they didn’t send Wax Benny?

  34. Roisin says:

Wow…if he wants to ditch fans, he should keep doing interviews like the one he just did on the HFAs. He just came across as quite an unpleasant, humorless fellow. 🙁
I miss the goofy, biting the head off cake decorations Benedict.

    • Old Enough says:

Just saw Eddie Redmayne, not sure if it’s his fiance or costar next to him.

    • aly says:

      What did he say?

    • OhHey says:

I didn’t see it live, they didn’t show it here in the US that I know of, I’m sure there must be film of it. He certainly never smiled, looks like thunder. Jesus, he needs to get a grip.

      • aly says:

I was thinking about how happy he looked at LFF…*sigh*

      • MissMary says:

They’re airing the awards here Stateside next weekend, iirc. But I’m sure footage of interviews will “accidentally” leak soon.

      • OhHey says:

They’re airing right now on CBS but thanks to the local station and some Patriots crap they didn’t show the red carpet interviews.

      • MissMary says:

Whaaaa? WOW my info sucks, lol. Why the hell did I think there’d be a delay in airing?

      • Linz says:

Wow! Look at the top photos. What is going on with him?
(At least he was able to crack a little smile in the other pics.)

        http://londonphile.tumblr.com/

      • Old Enough says:

MissMary, I think it was the Silicon Valley awards that are on delay. We here in Boston got screwed because the red carpet was on a different channel. By time I found it, Benedict’s interview was over.

      • OhHey says:

Aly I thought he looked the best ever at LFF, SO HAPPY, joyous, respectful of the fans, overjoyed to be there and he looked amazing, just like he had hit his stride that night and was invincible. Now? He looks like crap, sullen, unhappy, and the “tired” excuse doesn’t cut it for me. Something’s wrong.

      • aly says:

        @OhHey: yeah…I’m worried about him:(

      • MissMary says:

@Linz: Oy… he looks like he’s about to sock someone in the face. Not a good look for red carpet pics unless you’re Russell Crow, and even then it’s iffy.

      • aly says:

        Sandi, I wonder why…

      • Aiofe says:

So then…what changed between LFF and now?

    • Renee says:

I didn’t see it. I’m afraid to watch any more of his interviews. What did he say? I don’t think I saw one pic of him where he was smiling.

      • aly says:

I saw one where he was sort of beginning to smile. WTAF?

      • Roisin says:

He was uber-serious about the Turing story, which wasn’t so bad…but got quite snippy with Mo Rocca about Dr. Strange. And no smiles at all. Just acted bothered by the whole thing.

      • MissMary says:

Aw, hell naw. You do NOT get snippy with Mo Rocca (yes, I’m still nursing an old crush on him, gay or not, lol).

      • Cate says:

Most fans on Twitter clearly noticed he was pissed off. Even some real gushy ones. I refuse to watch it, too depressing and annoying. Standing by my ‘theory’ that the real Ben is locked up in Madame T’s in London. Yep. *Nods*

        I just don’t know anymore.

      • OhHey says:

First smile he cracked all night was when Kiera thanked him. Someone forgot to remove the stick from his butt before he left.

      • moodgirl says:

He looked like he was just bothered about something. Just irritated. Miserable.

      • Renee says:

Honestly he looks a bit ridiculous, never cracking a smile. I much preferred the old version of himself. This is not flattering. I’m not watching. Not sure I can take hearing his acceptance speech.

      • Sandi says:

Something’s wrong, the broken record that I am, and he can’t hide it.

      • aly says:

Sandi, I’ll be a broken record with you….

      • gg says:

I hope that he’s with Keira a lot as they do the promo rounds. She seems to do wonders for his mood. I keep thinking of this passage in her Harpers Bazaar Man of the Year piece about him. I hope she can return the favor now.

“There have been moments in our friendship when I have been going through tough times and he has been right there, taking me out to dinner, coming round to the house, being the one who listened. I appreciate that hugely..”.

      • Sandi says:

        @gg and aly:

Yes. I just can’t get past the dead eye thing myself.

    • gg says:

Oh no, they have not shown it here yet. Have you seen the Buzzfeed word-association thing? Quite delightful!

      http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/benedict-cumberbatch-has-a-lot-of-feelings-about-tumblr

    • Green Eyes says:

There was a shot of him while KK accepted her award. Not even a crack of a smile while she thanked him.

I feel sad at seeing him like this – especially if he is cracking under the pressure.

  35. MissMary says:

Oop, looks like Buzzfeed is helping with the PR when it comes to Penguins of Madagascar. And yeah I am probably reading too much into it but he looks less than thrilled to take part.

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/benedict-cumberbatch-has-a-lot-of-feelings-about-tumblr

  36. OhHey says:

Uh oh, pressure’s on – Eddie Redmayne just thanked his beautiful fiancee…….

  37. tasha_nat says:

Oh for the love of god…even Kristen Stewart cracked a smile on the red carpet.

    http://twitter.com/Variety/status/533427981343928320/photo/1

Get it together, Batch. SNAP OUT OF IT!

  38. OhHey says:

Anyone remember him at the LFF premiere? Joyful, happy, grateful, bundle of energy, boy, do I miss that guy. Can’t wait for his speech, and I hope to God he’s not drunk again.

  39. TotallyBiased says:

If anyone feels like showing the Dragonfly King a little love, he’s facing a hecka tough battle this round against David Tennant.
In other news, BendyBot’s fans are bravely supporting him against the dastardly upstart Colin Morgan. 😉

    http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/fan-favorites/men-2014/round-3/match-3/

  40. Old Enough says:

embarrassment of riches for the win, and no mention of the fiancee.

  41. OhHey says:

RUH ROH………all business. Well, good for him. Alan Turing deserves far more credit than Octopussy anyway.

  42. Gracada says:

And no thank you to Sophie…or anyone (not even HW).

    • Felice says:

Remember when Steven Moffat thanked his Sexy Producer at the Emmys? (his wife irl)

    • **sighs** says:

He better watch out for horse heads…

    • Aiofe says:

I’m starting to wonder if this relationship is real, even if it’s nuts and naive he proposed after such a short time, and he’s just pissed off the engagement had so much legs in the media or HW is using it for his advantage.

Did he not see this coming considering she was already in HW’s pretentious snob circles? Well, as we’ve been discussing, he IS gullible…

      Get a real woman, Ben.

      • moodgirl says:

@Aoife – Don’t you think too much has gone on to be that simple? He had to know what would happen when he put the announcement in the paper. Too much crap has gone on for them not to know the consequences.

      • Aiofe says:

I know, moodgirl, I know. That’s exactly what hangs me up.

      • Aiofe says:

I am wondering if his strange behaviour began around this time and is just another example of it. Question then is what caused it?

    • aly says:

he didn’t even thank his parents…and he always does that.

  43. OhHey says:

Jeez, the nannies are going mental, “HE WON! HE WON!” Which he did before he showed up….No mention of not thanking Octopussy.

  44. CoCo says:

Is it possible SH not thanked and he focused on Turing in his speech as attempt to keep focus on movie not engagement? Not that I am suggesting this is normal behavior but I think we are not observing a normal situation. Trying to apply logic where it might not exist.

Or perhaps SH is the modern day Harvey-the fiancé bunny that only BC can see?

    • OhHey says:

He’s very committed to/protective of/passionate about Turing, so under any other circumstances I would have found that speech normal. But to do what he did being so ‘in love’ and then not mention something that make him so happy (although happy was nowhere in his zip code tonight), yes, it’s very weird. His way of saying “business is business and my private life is not business”, even though he kind of shoved it out there. I think he’s gullible, maybe convinced himself he was in love, and isn’t. Who knows….

      • Felice says:

He didn’t thank Keira or even Weinstein either though.

      • Aiofe says:

Or, knowing how intense the coming months would be like, he proposed because he freaked out because he might lose her, what with his mood and all. Not that she’s Miss Sunshine herself…

I still find it amazing he SEEMS to have thought his private business would remain private while dating a woman in Harvey Weinstein’s trust fund Barbie circles. WEINSTEIN: the guy promoting your film! He mixed his private life with his business just by merely dating someone connected to him.

        THINK BEN THINK

      • Gracada says:

Everyone else thanked the cast/crew or family. Benedict didn’t (even newly engaged….come on)

      • MissMary says:

IDK–other actors up there with intense movies to promote managed to think SOs and co-workers…

      • moodgirl says:

And since his award was next to last he was well aware what everyone else was saying. Maybe he is having a Oh Shit moment and it finally hit him what he has done. I just posted down thread what on earth could possibly keep her away from supporting him. It’s baffling.

      • aly says:

one would think that if someone is so in love, so in the midst of a whirlwind romance , wouldn’t forget to thank his fiancee…oh, well…*shrugs*

    • Aiofe says:

You know i’ve been trying to wrap my head around the idea he sincerely thought that announcement was for his friends only and not the public.

But if he is so paranoid about keeping his private life private that he wouldn’t even be seen touching her in public prior to the engagement, I don’t think he would have put that announcement in the paper and if his parents wanted it for tradition, they would have waited until a few weeks prior to the wedding.

The other option is of course…he’s a bit funny in the head.

      • blended says:

ben or his parents didn’t put that announcement in the paper. his name was missing an initial. his side would never make a mistake like that. it was all pr.

      • Aiofe says:

Let’s not get grassy knoll here. It could be formatting, allowing for only one middle initial, or space constraints. And if HW’s people googled his name to find out his first middle name they’d have seen his second one.

      • blended says:

um no i doubt it was formatting. posh people are pros at this kind of thing. but if it’s easier for you to believe he’s just ‘funny in the head’, who am i to stop you.

      • moodgirl says:

Hasn’t he admitted that he did it?

      • Felice says:

        @moodgirl

that’s what he wants you to think :p I kid idk who did it

      • lola says:

        @blended
I was also thinking about the initials. Maybe BC was made to do it and left out one initial on purpose?

    • Ellen says:

Oh come on even David Tennant thanks his wife when he wins awards and he’s the king of keeping his private life separate

  45. tsmiv says:

She was put in BC’s path by HW’s circle. I mean her BFF is the girlfriend of HW’s brother-in-law. From all the pics of them together she looked like she was chasing him. I think she was given instructions to ensnare him and she followed thru. Then announcement 2 days before LA press tour. His co-stars say he is gullible. I don’t believe they mean it in a mean way, just that he wants to believe people are genuine. I can’t believe more people haven’t picked up on the connections, it’s just so obvious to me. “The universe is rarely so lazy.”

    • Gracada says:

He’s blind to others motives….SH or HW

    • Aiofe says:

It’s impossible to tell from our POV who initiated what and to what purpose, but it’s all incestuous.

there is one story that really drove it home for me that he is gullible, and it wasn’t the Pegg or Freeman stories. It was his mother telling the press back in the 70s that her daughter, BC’s half sister, believed in Santa until 11. I bet she was a wonderful mother, but I can see how he became someone who didn’t question the motives of people around him who want him around for their interests and not his

    • lola says:

I had a feeling that she was sort of chasing him and trying to catch him (why would she be at Hay festival). I just hope that he hasn’t fallen in love and/or proposed for real and she was there just for alterier motives.

      • Felice says:

She read something. I was at both readings at Hay and I honestly do not remember her lol and there were some outstanding readings.

      • tsmiv says:

I have wondered if BC woke up last Wednesday morning as surprised as everybody else because HW or his minions put it in the paper without his knowledge. Probably not, but he’s done dirty stuff in the past. It just seems like the paper announcement could have waited. Why not do it over Christmas when he would get a bit of a break from press touring?

      • moodgirl says:

I wonder why she doesn’t show up to support him? Wild horses couldn’t keep me away. It is just so strange.

      • lola says:

        @Felice
Yes, I know she read something, but why – she is a director of fart art and seems to be disinterested in “normal” artistic things (Hay would be so beneath her).

      • Aiofe says:

it’s not that hay is normal. hay is a prestigious literary festival. she is neither prestigious nor literary.

having said that more plausible explanation is he gave her the gig

      • MissMary says:

Well, even at Hay were some wtf things like Cressida Bonas as a singing fox thing in a weird retelling of a faerie tale… So I have the feeling that, for some of the venues anyway, you can buy a spot to present your “piece”.

    • OhHey says:

What’s the Simon Pegg story? Haven’t heard that one.

      • Aiofe says:

something along the lines of they were shooting in a nuke facility, and he tricked him into thinking ions would cause radiation damage unless you wore a certain cream. Ben bought it and thought at one point the ions were actually affecting his health or ability to perform.

so wearing the cream, ok i can see some people buying it. but that it was affecting his health…tells me that people bullshitting him can affect him physiologically very easily. (what else is a physiological reaction? love.)

he’d be an easy hypnosis subject

      • aly says:

Uh…not necessarily. I’m gullible on an extent, especially with people I trust, but I’m a hard hypnosis subject.

      • OhHey says:

Oh, the neutron cream thing – that was hilarious, everyone was in on it and he went along no matter how silly it seemed. Apparently, he IS NO rocket scientist…. 😉

  46. tsmiv says:

He goes from talking about trysts and “enjoying his currency” in late August and 10 weeks later, he’s engaged? His friends and co-workers must be “Dude, WTF???”

  47. TotallyBiased says:

Reading up through the thread made me wonder if some of the unhappy BendyBot could stem from Dr. Strange. Perhaps it has been finalized that he CAN`T do it (probably due to schedule conflicts) and he REALLY wanted to (any ambitious actor at this point would) so he’s cranky and working out a lot of cognitive dissonance.
    Just a thought.

    • aly says:

I’m wondering what his recent behavior could be about…I doubt it’s due to the engagement, whether it’s PR or the real deal; he would be able to mask it, he acts for a living and he’s usually good at what he does!
I think Ben is burnt out, jet lagged and I honestly wonder how can he manage to juggle two and half months more of this stuff…plus all the crap Weinstein’s machine will pull to ensure he’s the frontrunner for the awards.
He’s looking like a cautionary tale for: “careful what you wish for”
IDK, to me the engagement, SH and all the cloak and dagger is looking less and less like an issue. I’m genuinely concerned about Ben.

      • Sooth says:

He’s also been able to mask tiredness before. All it takes is a smile and the same acting skills you mentioned. I don’t know what it is, but yeah he worries me too.

      • Claire says:

Yeah same here. Not just that he’s like this, but it doesn’t seem to be getting better. You’d think a few days off might make it better

      • aly says:

I’ve looked at the pictures from yesterday on tumblr, he smiles in some pictures with Keira and in some interviews post show, maybe he’s just *very* tired (I don’t believe it, but Occam’s razor and all that it entails…)

      • Claire says:

ok so what is he doing when he’s not at the awards shows? sleep on planes suck, but not so much you can’t crack a smile. i have a hard time believing he’s not getting at least 8 hours of sleep.

      • aly says:

Claire: Richard III, interviews…and Ben himself has said that he’s prone to insomnia when he’s stressed.

      • Sooth says:

        He’s been very tired before.

      • aly says:

I know Sooth, I’m trying to look at this mess from other perspectives too…

    • Gracada says:

He did the Britannia Awards last year…left filming TIG, flew to LA, got off the plane and right to the show.

He looked a BILLION times happier and relaxed then compared to now. It’s night and day from a year ago.

      • OhHey says:

It’s night and day from a couple of months ago at LFF, he was amazing there, pouring rain, but he was happy, outgoing, overjoyed, taking the mike from the reporter and making a speech and apologizing that he couldn’t get to all the fans who had stood in the rain waiting for him, saying ‘I love you all’ – I felt like this guy had just hit his stride and realized it, and was on top of the world. From that to this morose, humourless creature is just shocking to me, and something that should make him happier than he’s ever been he can barely talk about, and certainly does so with not a bit of joy. Wrong wrong wrongety wrong.

      • aly says:

OhHey, the sad thing is that LFF was last month…Graham Norton was three weeks ago; that’s why I’m worried. And to me it doesn’t make a lick of sense that the engagement or SH — whether it’s all PR, part PR, twu wuv or whatever — might be the cause. It

  48. Aiofe says:

Hey. I know of a detective who could take a look at Ben’s crazy weird suspicious behaviour and actions the past 10 days, and solve it pretty quickly…where is that guy?

    • lola says:

He wouldn’t need 10 days. But if he cared for BC half as much as he does for John … SH’d be in a bit of trouble.

  49. MissMary says:

Already tumblrites are posting “OMG he looked so happy on the red carpet!” 0_o Did I miss a different red carpet? because all the pics I’m seeing now look like a man who just was told he needs ten root canals and they’re out of anasthesia.

    • Aiofe says:

I don’t even bother with Tumblr outside of the more reasonable posters on EB. on there they are mostly teenage girls or women still with the teenage girl mentality.

    • aly says:

the hell…? In some of the pics he looks like he can barely keep his eyes open…

      • Claire says:

if that’s the case, i’m going to point to drugs. which one, i don’t know. i would say benzos, but having been on them it doesn’t make you angry (unless you’re taking a very high dose and are addicted to them). they calm you, and they can make you very tired and sleepy. they don’t prevent you from cracking a smile though.

any pharma people who can help shed some light?

      • aly says:

Being exhausted is not enough? 🙂

      • Claire says:

i made another post a few moments ago. he’s had a few days off. unless he has a busy schedule in the off hours, how can he not be getting 8 hours of sleep? And even if not, there’s caffeine to help you get through it. he’s behaving just like he was last week.

    • Gracada says:

@MissMary That comment made my morning

He looks miserable. The tumblrites need to look at his arrival on other red carpet events for the past year or two….it’s not hard to see something is wrong.

  50. Ellen says:

Benny has the whole world at his feet, he’s in a great movie tipped for awards, is getting work and is engaged to the woman he loves. I don’t expect him to go all Tom Cruise but you would expect him to look and sound happy at least, he can still be happy but have a sense of privacy at least. I’m wondering if he’s depressed because even happy things seem sad to people with it.

    • Claire says:

he doesn’t seem sad as much as resentful. most depressed people mask their illness. he’s not masking anything.

  51. Alex says:

I’ll try to articulate what bothers me most about the Weinstein connection with this woman, who is a mediocre nobody no matter how much PR tries to sexy up her CV, and it’s not what you might think it would be.

Let’s assume the relationship and engagement are 100% real.

Let’s assume what we suspect is true: Weinstein is running Benedict into the ground.

This broad has had VERY close friendships with those in Weinstein and his wife’s circle far longer than she has had any friendship, let alone LOVE, with Benedict. Worse comes to worst, she’s NEVER going to use her influence to get Weinstein to back off for the sake of the man’s sanity: she would jeopardize her personal and professional ties by doing that. Not just with Weinstein. Not just with his wife. But the wife’s brother and his partner, who is her best friend. It would be downright dangerous to her standing in that social circle.

I know many people in this business and I’ll tell you as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, many of these people, including lovers and so called close friends, put the safety of staying connected in the biz, especially with power players, above personal well being. Personal well being defined as personal sanity, staying free from addictions, men and women with ulterior motives, inflated egos and so on.

I have war stories and I have battle scars from this stuff.

  52. lindy79 says:

Hes not going to mention or thank she who shall not be named.
As great as the focus was on Turing, he should have thanked the cast and crew. Its basic politeness.

Sorry its a pet peeve of mine. Movies and tv cant be made without the folks behind the scenes who don’t get acknowledged or pampered at award shows.

    • Gracada says:

Because of this I think I am going to call her Voldemort from now on.

    • OhHey says:

There was some caption of a photo after the award that he was nervous and forgot half of what he was going to say, presumably thanking Kiera, Morten and the rest of the cast and crew. Still don’t see the Huntress (gag, as her friends call her) being named. Hope they call it off before she ever appears in public.

  53. Curioser says:

    http://eggsbenedish.tumblr.com/post/102681155647/lifted-from-sophies-fb-page-the-post-was-public

Just spotted this on EB – if this is legit, I don’t know what to think! When did that DL rumour come out, about SH friends being confused b/c she has a lover in NY?

This whole thing just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Gawd, this is like a really bad soapie!

    • Sooth says:

Matthew Siskin is friends with eloise whatsit and all that ridiculous eat your own kidney for ‘art’ lot. I think he’s dating some blonde woman anyway.

He was part of that Coney Island group that bc was with a couple of years ago.

    • Claire says:

So the rumored boyfriend Sophie Hunter has in NyC said he loved her a day after her engagement. From the guardian interview, he seems like a typical songwriter: needy and parasitic emotionally. I wonder if BC is also like this and takes advantage of that.

this isn’t a soap, it’s the Warren Commission.

Also, this from EB, more CV polishing:

This may be what they were trying to hide. The BBC pulled all copies of Steptoe and Son, a series she did. It was full of controversy? Also she was in a series with Andrew Scott, my life in film, why would you hide that? This stinks like last years fish.

      • Claire says:

just to clarify what i mean, i wonder if BC is emotionally needy (sounds like it if he’s so desperate for kids), and she’s a woman who pulls those kinds of men in and manipulates them to her advantage. I’ve known a few women like that.

      • MissMary says:

To be fair, I have platonic friends who will say things like that to me and our other friends but the timing is really wtf, esp if she was rumored to be with him as recently as late summer.

      • Claire says:

not to mention knowing it would be publicly seen, and that the public would likely find it considering what had happened one day before

      • Claire says:

and plus isn’t HE a friend of BC’s as well. yeah i wouldn’t be saying that to even a very close friend of the opp sex in a public forum the day after they were engaged.

all of these people seem to have really fucked up, constantly moving boundaries about what should be shared publicly and privately.

Occam’s Razor answer: he’s probably another desperate, talentless fame seeker like Hunter.

      • Alice says:

Speaking of cv polishing, has anyone looked at SH’s imdb site recently? Her little elves have been busy. Where once there were no pictures at all on that site, now there are about a dozen. Most from the FO, for god’s sake, making sure we know she’s connected to BC. Doesn’t seem to matter they look bored to death with each other. And at the “beginning” of their relationship. When will one of the elves post the music video she’s in? The one with the half naked guy running around London looking for love and she’s one of the women he ogles. I think B looks miserable because he’s embarrassed to be linked with this no talent climber.

    • Claire says:

the DL rumor came out a few days after the engagement was announced.

    • OhHey says:

She doesn’t look like a dog person to me so those hounds must be someone else’s….

  54. Kazlock 1307 says:

What do you think the chances oh her already being in NY?
She’s got connection’s there,so could have cut out LA and gone there to meet up with BC?
