Chris Pratt on his career: ‘I’m going to do only the best stuff or nothing’

Chris Pratt

The director of Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow, tweeted this photo yesterday. Yep, that’s Chris Pratt with a CGI velociraptor. According to the movie’s trailer, Pratt’s character enlists the raptors to hunt the really gigantic, evil dinosaur that was created in a lab. Maybe? That’s what I gathered from the trailer, which was an unholy mess (much like the other Jurassic movies). Anyway, I doubt this photo will give many of you the warm, fuzzy feelings that Pratt and a raccoon generated this summer. After the big GQ hunting conversation, Pratt’s gonna need to do some grovelling to win back da ladies.

Chris scored one of this week’s Hollywood Reporter covers. He posed with James Gunn on a bed with some comic books. They both talk about the big risk Guardians was to Marvel and how the risk paid off for everyone involved:

“Everyone wants to win big, but no one wants to gamble,” says Chris Pratt, star of Guardians of the Galaxy, the unlikely highest-grossing movie of the year. That sounds like 20/20 hindsight about what initially was predicted among industry insiders to be “Marvel’s first bomb.” Of course, a different type of explosion occurred when Guardians hit theaters Aug. 1 and brought in $771.8 million worldwide at the box office, launching a new franchise for the now-even-more-powerful Marvel brand.

“Every rule said, ‘You don’t make a movie with a talking tree,’ ‘You don’t spend this much money on a raccoon with a gun,'” says Pratt, 35. “For me, I was like, ‘Oh, so this movie is going to bomb. Done. This is the end of my career.’ ” Pratt points to director and co-writer James Gunn as the true risk-taker for spending two years on nothing but this movie. “I actually personally felt that people needed the color,” explains Gunn, 44, who previously directed low-budget indies such as Super and Slither. “They needed the humor and the fun — they just didn’t know it yet. But there were those nights at 3 a.m. when I would wake up and be like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing? If this goes wrong, my life is screwed. I’ll be a pariah.’ ”

With the opposite occurring, Gunn has signed on for the sequel, slated for release in 2017. Meanwhile, Pratt has been very choosy with his next move, turning down high-profile offers and only recently joining Denzel Washington on the remake of The Magnificent Seven. Pratt is quick to point out that his personal life — with his wife, actress Anna Faris, and their 2-year-old son, Jack — hasn’t changed, and he prefers it that way: “I don’t want my kid to be 10, and I’ve done 20 movies. Some people can do that, but I’m going to do only the best stuff or nothing.”

His Hollywood life, on the other hand? “Changed completely. I take meetings with people, and I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, you want to have a meeting with me? All right, we’ll sit down.’ “

[From Hollywood Reporter]

At the rate Chris is going, he’ll hit that 20 movie mark before Jack turns 10 years old. He wants to avoid that and keep plenty of time open for family. But the dude currently belongs to three franchises, so he’ll be really busy for a long time. His IMDb profile reveals a Lego Movie sequel, more Guardians (with possible MCU crossover), Cowboy Ninja Viking, and the Magnificent Seven remake (starring Denzel). Plus Vacation Friends. He’s an A-lister now, and he probably has a stack of scripts waiting on his doorstep. Chris shouldn’t have made the sweeping statement about only doing quality movies. Give it a few years, and one of his movies won’t be so awesome. Statistically speaking, he’s bound to have a dud or two.

I’m including some photos of Chris with Anna Faris and little Jack Pratt at LA’s Travel Town museum. Jack loves trains!

To some all these marvel and comic franchise movies even with their big budgets are not deemed ‘quality’.

  2. Dani2 says:

I love Chris Pratt and I’m so happy with all the success he’s getting.

  3. the original rachel says:

Is that a can opener strapped to his leg and covering his junk? What IS that?

  4. FLORC says:

By “quality” does he mean substance or box office gold? Because it could be argued he’s yet to make a movie of quality.
And JPW will be bad. It was cutting edge effects when it came out in the early 90’s and somehow that looks more realistic than special effects some 20 years later.

  5. Anna B says:

I really like Chris Pratt and thought that he was excellent in Guardians, but signing on for remakes of Jurassic Park and the Magnificent Seven (itself a remake) calls into question his definition of ‘the best stuff’…

  6. Lucy2 says:

I think that’s an easier statement to make when you’re sitting on the biggest movie of the year, as he’s probably being offered everything right now. I hope he can do that, be choosy and pick only quality stuff, but everyone ends up with some stinkers on their resume.

  7. apsutter says:

Just watched Guardians and loved it but whenever I see or hear him all I can think of is Andy Dwyer and Emmet…”I can be dark and serious too…oh look a rainbow!” lmao

  8. Jules says:

I like Pratt but when he does the come hither look…like the one he’s giving in the photo with all the comic books, it turns me off. Dude tries waaay too hard at times.

Jurassic World looks cheesy…sorry, Pratt but nice to know he will only do the “best stuff”.

  9. SuePerb says:

Um, didn’t he do Movie 43 just last year? Ok, I am sure he is saying, Now I will only do the best. Let’s just hope he is luckier than almost every other actor out there who tries not to choose the duds

    • cr says:

Most of Movie 43 was filmed in 2010. And that movie is black mark for anyone who was involved in it.

  10. GingerCrunch says:

Sweet little guy they’ve got there. I doubt his life will be “screwed” by a clunker of a movie. Priorities, please!

  11. He sounds like an arrogant a-hole, maybe he isn’t, but he sounds like one. Especially since the only thing I’ve ever seen him in, before I saw the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, was that awful Bride Wars movie–he played the crappy fiancee of Anne Hathaway. So….basically he got lucky with Guardians?

    • Juliette says:

I kind of agree with the arrogant comment. He does come off as rather full of himself but that is not my main problem with him.

I read an interview with him a while ago where he talked about being a trophy hunter; so now I am done with him. I get that people hunt for food and survival, I have no issue with that. If you need to feed your family then do what you need to do.

However, when it comes to shooting a defenceless animal just so you can put their head on your wall? I find that really objectionable. Don’t everyone yell at me, because this is just my opinion. It will probably make zero difference to his bottom line but I will not give my money to someone that trophy hunts.

I mean the guy shoots squirrels, how much meat can you really get off an effing squirrel? Craziness.

    • lucy2 says:

So you haven’t seen Parks & Rec? If not, I’d really recommend it. He’s great in it, but it’s also just a sweet, funny show.

      Trophy hunting, ick.

Stuffed velociraptor head on Pratt’s wall in 3…2…

  13. Ashling says:

    They have a sweet family.

  14. ella says:

Ha! Well, I guess that means we’ve seen the last of him.

  15. Bobbi says:

He’s looking so cas about that dino ready to bite hiss ass. Strange poster. But he’s never looked better.

  16. Debutante says:

Oh good. That means he will fade into Obscurity ! Can’t wait.

  17. Becky1 says:

I was at a family gathering and the kids were watching “Guardians of the Galaxy” so I ended up seeing part of it-I thought it was lousy and I wasn’t impressed by Chris Pratt. If that fits his definition of “the best stuff” than I beg to differ. Of course, I’m a 42 year old woman so I’m definitely not the target audience.

He presents as someone who has become very impressed with himself now that he’s become more famous. He had a nice career going as a character actor and IMO a role like Andy on Parks and Recreation is much more interesting than the big action franchise leads. Then again, I can’t blame him for wanting bigger paychecks and greater exposure.

  18. Mia says:

I missed his GQ interview this summer and just now clicked on Bedhead’s link…..OOOOH I so wish I hadn’t!! I watched Guardian’s this last weekend (I know – where the hell have I been???) and had such a super-drooper crush on him….now – not so much. Such a shame…I thought Chris Pratt dancing to Come and Get Your Love was EPIC! But now, I’m not feelin it. 🙁
