Jennifer Lopez shills cleanses, ‘fat burning’ pills: does this make you like her less?

Jennifer Lopez is all over the place promoting her upcoming film, The Boy Next Door, which is out on January 23. Judging from the cheesy ads I’ve seen, it’s a thriller in which her older sexy character has an affair with a teen neighbor boy who turns obsessive. Also the 15th season of American Idol just premiered on Wednesday. I expect to see Lopez hustling hard in the coming weeks, which she’s always done.

In a new interview with E!, Lopez explains that she didn’t use a body double for the sex scenes and that “It was all me.” She also called those scenes “embarrassing” and “uncomfortable,” but her costar, Ryan Guzman, praised how well she kept him at ease.

Of course Lopez didn’t need a body double at all because she’s got an incredible figure which she surely busts her butt to maintain. So many of us would love to know how she does it. Well now Lopez is capitalizing on that. She’s launched a new “health and fitness program” called Bodylab in which she’s shilling protein shakes and supplements. Their tagline is “Be The Girl of Your Dreams.” Of course she’s couching all of this in empowerment language and she admits that she works hard, but it’s still disappointing to me that she’s doing this. Here’s how she explained it to Good Morning America:

Bodylab is a line of supplements and protein shakes and all kinds of things where you can enhance your workout. You know, you have to work hard. There’s no like, magic pill. I’m very much about women, women empowerment, being the best you. Different things about our metabolism that is totally different from men. A lot of the supplements out there are made for men. We just want to look good. We want to be hot.

[From Good Morning America, aired January 8, 2015]

After that she drank a protein shake from her new line and claimed it gave her energy. Food will do that for you. Protein shakes are one thing, but I checked out the Body Lab website and they’re selling week long “cleansing” shakes and “fat burning” pills with pseudoscientific claims. Here’s part of the description for “Thermodynamic TotalBurn,” “Total Burn is designed to switch a woman’s body into fat-breakdown mode in order to preferentially burn away her body fat ‘sinks’ and use them for fuel. This helps us lose weight in the form of actual fat mass.” So there’s no, like, magic pill but there is a pill that claims to “preferentially” burn fat and “switch a woman’s body into fat-breakdown mode.” Also, the “7-Day Ultra Fast Slim Kit,” which is the first product on the page incidentally, claims to be “the ultimate way to cleanse and detoxify the female body and kick-start the fat-burning process.” There are asterisks after many of the these claims which lead to a disclaimer that they have “not been evaluated by the FDA.

This system sounds very similar to Isagenix, a diet shake program that two of my friends have tried with no success. It bothers me that a celebrity is endorsing a diet shake, but of course many other celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow have endorsed cleanses and shakes. Goop just did it with a higher price point.

Heres a thought: Eat real, unprocessed food, ditch the white, refined carbs, sugar and junk. Voila! I dont take any supplements of any kind and never felt better.

    • LB says:

That’s likely her “secret” as well. That and her strict workout regimen/dance schedule. For her to imply otherwise is a joke.

    • Becks says:

Nur, exactly! I pretty much eat like that, however, I can’t give up my wine. I need to live a little 😜
Being active and eating well, that’s all it is. No magic pills. And, also those “cleanses” are rubbish! Why starve your body and mess up your metabolism?!?

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

It doesn’t surprise me. It doesn’t make me like her less, because I’ve never liked her, period.

    • Esmom says:

What utter BS, crap claims and junk “science.” Wasn’t she just recently extolling the virtues of a being a vegan?

And I know what you mean about it not surprising you. She’s not someone I’d seek out for any intelligent insights.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ha, exactly. She seems about as deep as a puddle.

      • Kitten says:

…can I just make the distinction between protein shake cleanses, which are full of additives and things none of us can pronounce, and REAL cleanses, which are based on eating clean and healthy foods?

I’m in the midst of a post-holiday cleanse now and I’m eating oatmeal, citrus fruits, kale, tuna, walnuts, flax seed oil, etc.–all real food.

        I feel fantastic.

Sort of related, a guy I dated a while back developed Gynecomastia when he was in his late teens/early twenties from drinking too many protein shakes.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right, my healthy Kitten, but those are all good, real foods full of nutrients. Nothing at all like what she’s pushing. I’m interested in your plan – did you make it up from your own research, or do you have a link for me? It sounds wonderful.

      • Luciana says:

Amen GoodNamesAllTaken…I’ve never liked her either so I don’t think I could like her less.

      • Kitten says:

@GNAT-It’s a combination of my BF’s trainer’s regimen and my own personal…stuff. Some of the stuff on the No-No list are things I refuse to give up, like greek yogurt (the cleanse mandates no dairy). She also says no fruit but f*ck that.

So for the first week no grains, beans, starches, dairy, or fruit, no alcohol, 70-80 ounces of water a day, black coffee or tea (1-2 cups), lean proteins and vegetables, healthy fats (avocado and almond butter, flax oil).
After that you can have grains but only barley and buckwheat.

Soy protein isolate is actually on her “toxic foods” list, so is non-organic canned soup because of the sodium content.

I’m also tracking my caloric intake which I hate doing so much but it really does force you be accountable for how much you consume. I’m using myfitnesspal.com.

I have a target of 1700-1800 calories a day because I usually burn 500-700 from running.

Sorry, that was probably way too much boring health stuff, but I really do feel 100% better than I did a week ago. I drank a lot of beer and ate too many cookies over the holidays 🙁

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thank you, Kitten! That sounds great. I have a post holiday sluggishness and it sounds perfect for that.

      • Kiddo says:

I have a nightly Dessert Hardy. It’s rich and delicious but also burns calories.

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

You beat me to it, Good Names…

    • Charlotte says:

I didn’t like her particularly until she publicly stood up for Leah Remini. She has family ties to Co$, so it was a big deal for her to be so public in her support. That gained her a lot of respect from me.

This is pushing it a bit, though.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t know about that story, but I respect your opinion, so I’m sure it was a good thing to do.

    • Kosmos says:

EXACTLY !! I cannot like her less because I have never liked her, not even for a minute !!

  3. clara says:

Is it me or do her boobs look fake in the second picture?

    • Jules says:

      It’s not you.

      • Frida_K says:

The abs looks kind of fake too. Generally, if one has such developed abs, there is a bit of evidence of a six-pack at least. She looks like she has a flat shelf of rectus abdominis muscle but there is no contour to it. That looks a little odd to my eye.

Definitely, I paused at the bosoms and wondered if she’d gotten a little something from Santa Claus this year. Like a trip to the surgeon’s office.

    • hadlyB says:

She’s had fake small boobs for a long time. See any of her really old movies and she really had ZIP on top. Nada and they were kinda saggy too for being so small.

In the pics looks like she also gets filler for her face but not as bad as some celebs, she’s been tweaking her face / body over the years like Christie Brinkley… so you don’t notice a huge over haul like Madonna did.

      • ana says:

I honestly don’t think her boobs are fake. Especially after looking at a picture like this one. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5OQMXACEAAe1JK.jpg

They don’t have that rounded look that comes with implants and they sag a bit like natural breasts do. She was never exactly flat chested and her boobs did get bigger after having twins.

  4. Josephine says:

Anyone shilling this crap to women is not pro-woman as far as I am concerned. Does she really need more money? Greedy, greedy.

    • Jag says:

      Exactly!

I would have more respect if she actually used the stuff, but we all know she has private chefs, dietitians, grocery shoppers, and fitness instructors to help her.

  5. Kiddo says:

“There’s no like, magic pill” is the best honest shilling for pills that I ever heard. She should add, “Like these supplements won’t do jack for you, I just want to make a chunk of change on a new endeavor” Next stop, Dr Oz…

    • LadyMTL says:

LOL Kiddo, you took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to post “How long before she’s on Dr Oz shilling her non-magic magic pills?” 😛

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lol. Buyer beware, these don’t work but buy them and you’ll have my body. Cause you’re stupid, that’s why.

    • Kitten says:

Ha ha…yeah the hypocrisy of her statement within the context of her shilling a diet pill is almost insulting.
It’s just amazing to me that there are still people out there who think a pill will magically make you thin. Sigh.

  6. Vee says:

Wraps, patches, shakes, cleanses, etc -DO NOT WORK! Eating healthy clean food and working out are the only answer, period. Shame on her for hawking this nonsense.

  7. Obsidian says:

She looks soooo good that a lot of women will probably buy what she’s shilling.

    • lirko says:

Right. I’m sure that’s exactly the point. You have to wonder how how much they’re paying her.

  8. Lucy2 says:

I’ve admired her hustle in the past, but this is just a plain old cash grab. I don’t believe for a second she uses the stuff herself- she looks grear, but probably has a very controlled diet and very strict trainers.
It’s amazing to me that products like this are still in the marketplace, when the “science” behind their claims is so clearly bogus.

    • Esmom says:

And she didn’t even sound convinced herself, ugh.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Yup.

    • Zip says:

There are people who are stupid, lazy or desperate enough to buy them. That’s why this weight loss stuff is still being sold and new products are created.
It also blows my mind that a lot of people do not know how to eat healthy. Seriously, by now I think that healthy nutrition / cooking should be taught in school (mandatory!) since many parents are obviously not capable of doing it at home.

      • Nk868 says:

@zip couldn’t agree more! The crap kids eat and lack of parents understanding of nutrition is deeply upsetting. No, lucky charms does not count as a healthy breakfast!

  9. Granger says:

“Be the girl of your dreams”? “We want to be hot”? Wow. What a message to send to your daughter, Lopez.

  10. INeedANap says:

It doesn’t make me like her less because unlike Goopy, JLo has never been out to prove that she has the secret to life figured out and will deign to share it with you. That is some serious naked ambition coming from her; she knows it, we know it, everyone knows it. Get ’em girl.

(Note: I personally have and would never take any kind of fake supplements. I only consume what I recognize, thankyouverymuch.)

  11. I Choose Me says:

Whatever Lopez. She stays fabulous but it’s not because of protein shakes and supplements. Good genes are absolutely a factor and she’s got the money for the best skin care and a personal trainer that keeps her looking so great.

Also I’m loving the side-eye from the blond in the background of the first pic. Not quite sure who it’s directed to but I’m here for it.

    • Kitten says:

Absolutely, but no one in the diet industry will ever talk about the genetic component, because they want the average Sue to believe that they can get a body like J Lo’s just by taking a pill.

    • MsGoblin says:

The side-eye was the first thing I noticed, too! Ha! She’s not having any of it.

  12. scout says:

She is slowly turning to ….GOOP…..!!! Screams…..

  13. Jaded says:

I have a shake too J-Lo. It’s made with low-fat soy milk, unsweetened yogurt, a banana, a handful of mixed berries and a splash of vanilla extract. It’s called real food, not some powdered protein extract crap full of preservatives and fake flavours.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Yum.

    • Kitten says:

My boyfriend is big on the smoothies (he does something sort of similar to you but uses kale and almond butter, almond milk) but I just can’t get into shakes.
There’s something about liquid food that feels so unsatisfying to me. Like if I’m not chewing, it feels like I’m not eating?

I wish I could though because if you use REAL FOOD, it’s really good for you.

      • Esmom says:

I’m with you, Kitten, I’ve found I definitely need something to chew on. Occasionally I’ll throw a bunch of fruits and veggies in the blender for a smoothie if I’m too lazy to make anything but it actual doesn’t save much labor because then there’s an effing messy blender to clean!

    • daughterofjean says:

You should cut out the soy. It can affect your thyroid.

  14. Jayna says:

That doesn’t make me sick. Her body is her temple, and she is a business woman.

What makes me sick is her self-love tour while out schilling her book, all about looking within herself on why she can’t be alone, to taking responsibility for part of why Ben and Marc ended, her huge entourage always around, to now it’s reported she is back with transsexual-loving Casper. Of course, we knew she still secretly hooked up with him while proclaiming they were over after he humiliated her. But now she is stating she was an awesome girlfriend/wife, just picked the wrong men. And she is back with Casper, if reports are true.

    Nothing ever changes with J-Lo.

  15. vauvert says:

Can’t stand her. Another celebrity who is all about hair, makeup, skirts up to here… Her tweaking video was unbearable, I stopped watching before a minute was up. It smacks of desperation to stay “hot’ and relevant. When you have that much money, why do you need to sell crap to other women? Make music or movies, provide guidance to young artists, get involved in a good cause (empowering women is about much more than wearing cutout dresses…)
Not sure who will buy those products? Not only is she working out a lot with private trainers, she can afford chefs, cosmetic surgeons, etc. It’s not the pills and shakes and cleanses, it is the lifestyle. And for those of us who don’t have maids, nannies, chefs, private gyms etc. finding the time to work out, cook real food from scratch in addition to holding a job and raising kids and doing the house chores… Well, we won’t look like that, will we? There are only so many hours in the day, and her sitting there looking smug and shilling crap as if that would make us look like her, it just makes me nauseous.
Curious about one thing – I don’t believe I ever read about charity initiatives or giving back when it comes to her. Does anyone know?

    • Renee says:

Oddly enough, she does do some charity work. She is involved with the Boys and Girls Club of America, and I think one or two other things. I remember the B&G club because I was shocked when I found out, she seems like someone who wouldn’t give back.

  16. Jackson says:

Isn’t she an incredibly wealthy woman? Why would she shill for something like this? Wanting and working for more money is certainly not a bad thing, but I would think at this point in her life she’d be more choosy.

    • MsGoblin says:

      Indeed

    • Hautie says:

Actually I suspect she has a HUGE monthly overhead cost. Which requires constant working.

And lets be honest… women over 40 in the entertainment business better hustle while they can. Because there is going to be a good four decades that a girl will only make a fraction of what she can still make now.

I tend to suspect she paid all the financial costs while married to Marc. And he has issues with not wanting to spend his cash on anything but him.

      • Jayna says:

She is getting ready to sign a huge deal in Vegas for an in-house residency for several years.

      • Anony says:

Yeah but Hautie you have to keep in mind how much money she can make OFF HER MONEY! Even if she hasn’t invested in stocks/real estate/whatever, she has so many millions that just her money sitting there, in an account, doing nothing, earns her thousands upon thousands a week in interest…just from sitting there. She could easily live the high life just off her interest and not even need to touch her money. But I guarantee you she has financial advisors working for her investing her money so that it is earning far more than that. There is no way she has any need to keep working.

    • kai says:

That’s what I thought as well. How much money does she need?

  17. aenflex says:

I tend to agree with most of you. But on the other side of the coin, if someone is foolish enough to fall for the hype, well, that’s kinda their own fault. 25 years ago, fine.. Victims. But today, with information just a click away for most people who can both read and think, I find no excuses.

  18. Sheila says:

Beautiful woman, but never been a huge fan, her looks are what have gotten her this far and her dancing, but otherwise, she hustles but nothing she does WOWs me. But JLO likely does need another source of income I imagine. Her Idol gig is iffy at best, her movies don’t usually do well and her music rarely produces a good, solid mega-hit despite her promoting it everywhere and dancing her booty off. People admire her for her body and her dance moves, but admiration doesn’t pay the bills. Seems to me her career is at a standstill and she likely knows it. At 45, her body/face will still age, no matter what she does (the next generations likely already thinking of her as their Mom, a hot Mom, but their Moms age nevertheless). We will likely see more and more endorsements from her. Her expensive lifestyle has to be supported somehow and at her Hollywood “dinosaur” age, the music/acting/hosting offers will be less and less. It must be killing JLO to age.

  19. Laura.e says:

    Her “abs” look … Strange.

  20. samanthalous says:

JLo does follows the Ducan diet and has those good genes going for her.

  21. Hautie says:

Did anyone else watch Jennifer’s special on HBO? It was filmed while she was out on her World Tour. It was not a bad way to spend 90 minutes.

And I suspect her boob boost in these pictures… were done with a great bra or the cutlets. When she is roaming around in casual wear… it is obvious she has not had any work done to them. But she does know how to dress the girls up when working.

I also never realize until I watch the HBO show… was that Marc had left her. And basically did not see his children (with her) for months. I don’t want to spoil it for you. But I didn’t come away with a negative impression of her.

(Like I did after I watched that HBO special that Beyonce did…)

    • Jayna says:

Marc didn’t leave her. She said she realized one day she couldn’t do it anymore and the marriage was over. I watched the special. It was boring. Her routines all looked the same.
I think Marc saw the kids on her downtime on the tour. Otherwise, they were both touring at the same time and no way to ship little ones back and forth. She had little breaks off the road. But he didn’t see them whie she was off for months touring, it doesn’t sound like. I found the special boring, because I found her songs and perfomances samey and vocals bland and mostly lip-syncing. I still love On The Floor, though.

I like Jen, though, and always will. She has a cute personality and is driven and is beautiful.

  22. lisa says:

she’s made millions singing for dictators, i couldnt possibly like her any less

  23. Dana says:

I’ve always had wide hips and thick thighs with a small waist and B cup breasts, making me seem a bit bottom heavy I guess. Like Jennifer in Selena but more muscle.

Sometimes I want to get implants just to proportion myself more and have a killer hourglass figure like Jennifer or Angelina do. An old friend once told me, “You have a body like Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider; if your boobs were bigger.”

My longterm boyfriend is against it, he loves my body and even though I know he could afford to “buy me boobs” he never would (at least not anytime soon) because he prefers natural. I’m a student so I don’t have nearly enough money and even if I did, I couldn’t justify paying for plastic surgery before my student loans are paid off.

But I feel like, with these celebrities getting surgery, they make women like myself feel… Unnatural. When really, they are the ones who aren’t natural!

Then I look at Instagram, magazine covers, etc. and see how big, round feminine breasts make women look and I feel inadequate because mine are sort of small and not as round as I’d like and my nipples are different sizes and on and on. Less womanly, maybe? But what is the definition of a “true woman”? That’s ridiculous. I know this; yet, I still have these pangs of envy.

I only have cleavage if I wear a good, tight push up bra. And yet, I don’t even feel comfortable with my tits pushed up for everyone to see; it makes me feel gross. So what the hell?

    This shit is complicated.

    • Zip says:

I only have a C-cup but for my frame they are quite big, and let me tell you I’d love to have smaller ones. Big boobs are quite unconfortable when you want to do sports like running (and I even have a very good sports bra) and you can’t wear anything that requires you to go braless. There are up and downsides to everything. Also, I think that natural small boobs always looks way better than bigger fake ones.

    • Kitten says:

I think everyone has moments where we feel envy of other women that have what we don’t, or wish that one of our body parts was shaped differently, was bigger/smaller, whatever.
      That’s completely normal.
Please bear with me while I sermonize 😉

Just remember that for every woman that you envy, there’s a woman out there who envies YOU. As someone with really narrow hips and not much of a waist, I’ve always admired women who have natural curves. On a superficial note, I find that huge fake boobs often make curvy women look heavier, and just bigger than they really are.
      See: Kardashians.

Your relationship with your body is a fluid one that with time, will hopefully change and evolve to a level of benign acceptance. What has helped me is to focus on the parts of myself that I like and take advantage of them.

For instance, I know that my body has a natural athletic look to it, so I play that up with weight training and running. I’ll never be voluptuous or curvy, but I have the ability to get really toned.

Also, avoid pinterest, thinspo and sites that show picture after picture of ripped torsos with big boobs. This is not the average woman! These pics are being pinned, or Instagrammed precisely because they are the “ideal” body.

And on that note, forget “ideal”. There is no ideal. Ideal is being healthy and strong, ideal is loving yourself and having a boyfriend who loves you how you are. What you call “disproportionate” is a much-envied body type. Be thankful for it.

    • Dotty says:

Even though “he could afford to buy you boobs”? Priorities, girl….and perspective. There are far worse things in the world than not having celebrity-styled (c) boobs, which are an illusion that have to be replaced and refilled regularly.

  24. perplexed says:

J-Lo and Gwyneth Paltrow appear to be in the same place in their careers although I don’t know if Gwyneth realizes this.

  25. GirlyGirl says:

“does this make you like her less?”

    that isn’t possible

  26. jferber says:

When a 46 year old woman looks like a 28 year old woman, that is 10 percent diet, 10 percent exercise and 80 percent medical intervention. Guaranteed.

  27. Caz says:

The greed, hypocrisy and shamelessness of some of these celebrities is staggering. When are mega millions $ not enough?

  28. Adrien says:

She ages well coz she’s Latina.

  29. ejai says:

This sounds no different than a lot of these “programs”..all they do is give you the sh*ts.you drink the shakes, take the suppliments, and the bathroom becomes your best friend

  30. Kacy says:

No because I couldn’t possibly like her less than I do now.
