Angelina Jolie was ‘hurt, upset’ that ‘Unbroken’ was overlooked at the Globes

wenn22051328

Do you think Angelina Jolie was genuinely disappointed that Unbroken wasn’t recognized for more awards at more major awards shows? I do. I don’t think that her disappointment was soul-crushing or anything, but I bet she had a glass of wine and complained to Brad about it. Of course, screening Unbroken for a papal audience probably helped. As did the box office – Unbroken has already made more than $100 million in the domestic box office. Still, she’s disappointed. Why is this a thing?

Sources at the Golden Globes were buzzing on Sunday night that Angelina Jolie was pained that she and her film “Unbroken” were snubbed.

“Angelina’s hurt,” said one source. “She’s been upset that the film was overlooked.”

Jolie’s movie, as well as Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper,” were surprisingly shut out of the Globes.

When asked why Jolie was left out, one Hollywood Foreign Press Association member told us, “A few years ago, she would have been in,” meaning that the Globes would then have been wowed by star power alone. But he said the voters this year felt that the film didn’t measure up.

Then again, “Unbroken” has gained some steam with other organizations heading into the Oscars, including being named the AFI Awards’ movie of the year. The National Board of Review also gave the film’s Jack O’Connell some love.

It remains to be seen if Jolie will get her revenge when Oscar nominations are announced on Thursday.

[From Page Six]

Sure. A few years ago, Angelina did get invited to the Globes for no reason when she was nominated for The Tourist (a film I still defend, although it did bomb). I really don’t understand how the Globes could recognize her performance in The Tourist… but not Maleficent? Anyway, I think it’s pretty standard for people to feel “hurt” or “upset” that they didn’t get nominated for something. Michael Fassbender was hurt that his performance in Shame didn’t get recognized with an Oscar nomination, and he declared afterwards that he would never campaign again. I hope we don’t hear similar proclamations from Angelina if the Oscar nominations don’t go her way. Which I’m thinking they won’t. If anything, I think Ava DuVernay and Selma are going to hijack the Oscar nominations on Thursday.

In the bottom pic she doesn’t look like herself.

    • leeshin says:

She looks like Vivienne, her youngest daughter.

    • mayamae says:

I think she always looks different with a big genuine smile. It really warms her up and makes her so much more approachable.

    • Katherine says:

Maybe she’s disappointed that Jack O’Connell and crew were not recognized but I can’t even imagine she cares about herself at this point when it comes to awards. She has tons of them including THREE Golden Globes. It’s only the second feature film she’s directed and she’ll have plenty of chances in the future.

And, of course, no one she would confide in would be talking to others about it.

  2. Toot says:

Ok Page Six, I really don’t think Angelina is telling anyone, besides those who she’s close too, about how she feels about the GG and that person or persons, wouldn’t be talking.

Angelina was out this weekend for Gena Rowlands. Love the way Gena is looking at her.

I think that it’s all due to it being “Jennifer’s paid-for year.” I hate that they pick certain actors to recognize, no matter what they’ve done for the year, while other really good roles are overlooked. Di’Caprio definitely comes to mind.

Hopefully, the Oscars will be more objective and will give the movie the recognition it deserves.

    • SpookySpooks says:

I don’t think it will get a nomination. It’s a decent movie, but not Oscar-worthy.

      • Scarlet says:

I thought it was horribly directed and a terrible interpretation of a wonderful book. It was s-l-o-w and too long and just, pedestrian. No she left out such crucial parts from the book.

      • DJ says:

        Scarlet, I agree 100%!

      • Becky says:

Soooo glad it wasn’t nominated for an oscar best picture or director. She is so overrated

    • jessia says:

Huh? Unbroken wasn’t that great nor was AJ as the director. Sorry but which directors should be pass over for her this year? I think movies like Birdman, Boyhood, Whiplash, Selma, Gone Girl, Theory or Evyerthing being nominated this year are very well made, have talented and skilled diretcors behind them and those are the people who deserve their awards. Sorry but to say a movie that wasn’t great should be recognized for an Oscar is stupid.

      • mimif says:

Am I the only person in the world that thinks that Gone Girl is totally overrated? I watched it twice and I still think it….sucks.

      • Kiddo says:

You are either a glutton for punishment or have little access to other entertainment. That cracked me up. “This is a terrible movie, let me watch it again”, lol

      • Renee says:

        @Kiddo and Mimif,

That’s like when people say, this stinks!!! Here, smell it!!! 🙂

      • @mimif
I like the idea of Amy’s character, but the film itself seems kinda…boring. Maybe because I don’t like Ben Affleck in anything that doesn’t require a Boston accent….but I was not interested in seeing the movie at all. I also wasn’t all that into Birdman or Nightcrawler. I have like a limited attention span when it comes to movies–meaning that if I get bored, I get bored REAL quick, and then I usually suffer through the movie (only if I’m watching w/other people), or I skip. My mom says I watch tv like a man–I love holding the remote, lol.

      • Kiddo says:

@Renee, Haha! I do that to people!

      • mimif says:

Both of you, to your balloon! No seriously, sometimes I loathe things without warrant, quick to judge (cough) or something. I have to be careful and make sure I really hate it, because frequently I will deeeespise something, and then end up loving it. Which is why I live in fear of Adam Levine.

      • lucy2 says:

I haven’t seen Unbroken yet, but that’s the impression I’m getting with it in regards to awards – good not great, especially in comparison to those that are being consistently recognized with nominations and awards.
Which isn’t a bad thing – it’s only her 2nd film, it’s done well at the box office, and Louis’ family and the author of the book are pleased with it. She should be happy with that success.

      • Kiddo says:

        mimif, TEARS in my eyes.

      • littlestar says:

Yes, Unbroken was a good movie, but not a masterpiece by any means. Good acting and a moving storyline, but it was a bit too “family friendly”.

I thought Gone Girl was a decent movie too, but it was hard to not compare it to the book (which I thought was VERY enjoyable).

      • eva says:

        ………….

      • Amcn says:

I’m reading Gone Girl now and the book is excellent. I didn’t love the movie but I did watch the entire thing, and I almost never sit through an entire movie. I wish I had read the book first though.

      • Jog it says:

@mimif: I also thought Gone Girl was a boring and manipulative movie and book. Trashy and overrated.

    • noway says:

I think it is possible that the picture gets nominated as they can nominate up to 10, and she doesn’t for Director. That is probably the best bet, and maybe some other technical awards or even some acting nominations although that might be hard. I wonder about American Sniper as that looks incredible, and it is getting no love.

      • jessia says:

I think American Sniper will take that spot. Its got better reviews then Unbroken does so far. Or Grand Budapest Hotel.
These are the films from Awards Daily website and I think these are the ones will defeninalty take the 10 spots.
        Boyhood
        The Grand Budapest Hotel
        The Imitation Game
        Birdman
        Gone Girl
        Selma
        Whiplash
        The Theory of Everything
        Foxcatcher
        American Sniper

      • Meaghan says:

I’ve watched both Unbroken and American Sniper, and enjoyed both! However I liked American Sniper more, and hope that it gets the recognition is deserves because it was such a great movie. I wasn’t bored watching either of them, which is pretty rare because I have a short attention span for movies.

      • Thinker says:

Grand Budapest Hotel was awful. So BAD!

      • Arlene says:

I watched, or tried to watch, American Sniper on the weekend and turned it off about 40 mins in, it was incredibly dull. I have yet to see Unbroken, but hopefully will rectify that soon.

      • Sim says:

Arlene… Turned it off .. It’s only at the movies and only at 4 locations.. Really curious to know where you watched it… because it’s only 1 theatre in LA and 2 in New York. And I think 1 in Dallas.

      • @Arlene
Disappointed–I saw the trailer and I thought that this was the only time I’ve ever seen Bradley Cooper actually ACT.

      • Arlene says:

Watched it at home, had the oscar release copy, SIM. I was genuinely looking forward to it, but boy howdy was it ponderous. Foxcatcher a let down too, very disappointing, though Steve C and Mark R were wonderful in it.

      • lucy2 says:

jessia I think that list is probably right on – if they do the full 10 allowed.

      • Scarlet says:

        American Sniper was phenomenal.

      • DJ says:

American Sniper, another true story, certainly deserves to be in the Oscar category. It was outstanding! Reese’s movie was good, but dragged, and was nothing like the book. Hotel Budapest, just silly…. If you read Unbroken, don’t waste your money on the movie. Wait until it comes out on video.

    • I wouldn’t think it was undeserved if it was nominated–I think a big problem is that critics expected it to be this grand epic….with everything in the book covered…a big message film about war, PTSD, etc. I went in with lower expectations because I knew it had bad/mixed reviews. Now whether or not she should win–ehh…..I haven’t seen any of the other Oscar baity movies this year (because again, my theater is shitty), so I can’t say whether or not it’s better or worse than any of them.

And just me, personally, I feel like a lot of people (just the vibe I get from people who didn’t like the film from reading stuff online) didn’t like how….positive and unsentimental the film was. I don’t know if I’m explaining it right. I think a lot of detractors were expecting something like Saving Private Ryan, where it’s gritty, and they’re fighting back with all they’ve got. This story isn’t about that. It’s about making it to the end. Which I think is a good message for boys and girls–I feel like we’re always hit over the head with how a man should be/act. That to be a hero you have to punch the other guy in the face, instead of walking away.

I saw this movie twice–I don’t understand how anyone could say the film had no heart. If anything, the person who made the trailer should be shot, because they amplified all of the dramatic moments by a million. Like I went in expecting a hollow film with lots of tearjerker moments..nope. These men didn’t feel sorry for themselves. They just wanted to go home, and you could see that.

Last thing–after seeing it a second time….I can’t believe the Coen brothers wrote the script. I don’t think the script was BAD or anything, but I don’t think it was amazing either. Like if anyone’s getting nominated, it should be Jack O’C, Roger Deakins, etc….not the Coen bros.

I can’t really say if Angelina should be nominated though–on one hand, men get nominated for mediocre films ALL THE TIME. But I kinda don’t want her to be nominated, because of course it’d just be because she’s Angelina Jolie (because of mediocre reviews)…so I want her to get nominated when she knocks it out of the park–at least according to the critics. But I loved this movie, and can’t wait for the DVD.

      • GoOnGirl! says:

But Virginia, she’s never gonna get positive reviews on anything, just because she’s who she is. We all know that. From people who have seen the movie, they disagree with the critics. The movie may not be as good as expected, but it certainly isn’t that bad. But because she’s who she is, people wrote bad reviews and didn’t even bother to see the movie. Which is totally unfair. People like that Sasha Stone.

      • wolfpup says:

GoOn Girl! – Barbara Streisand had the same problem, well, at least the problem of being brilliant and talented in a man’s world – (although it can be said, that Jolie has problems with females, as well). However, Angelina has time to prove herself. Barbara left her mark on the world. If Angie truly is, what many people hope, she will prevail.

    • zinjojo says:

It’s just not that great of a film, so why should it be nominated for awards? It’s really kind of a snooze.

      • Bernice says:

I read the book by Hillenbrand and liked it very much. The movie, not so much. It was a big project for a director with very little experience and the lack of experience shows in the movie. The movie was flat and unrelentlessly dreary. And it didn’t have to be. It was just a mess. I hated the acting of the bird, didn’t like the casting of the bird either. Way too androgynous looking and again, flat. The Bird was not a one dimensional character, but that craziness and the switch up personality wise weren’t shown. All the way around, I was disappointed in the movie. And I am a fan of Angelina’s but I lay the fault in the movie on her and her casting and directing choices. It should have been a phenomenal movie with a universal message and the ability to be a Great War movie up there with the movies that stand the test of time. Instead flat, flat, flat…..

      • Scarlet says:

        100% spot on Bernice.

  4. Kiddo says:

That black and white photo has the contrast pushed to warp speed. You under-exposed it, couldn’t color correct, and so you desaturated and converted to B&W, Frazer Harrison. And you made her face and teeth look weird in the process. That is all.

    • mia girl says:

She’s so amazingly photogenic, but with those features unnaturally emphasized, I’m seeing shades of Janeane Garofalo (which I never connected to her ever).
Amazing how mistakes in a photo process can do something like that.

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah, along with the snap-on block of hair he created, Yeesh!

      • Renee says:

I am not saying this to be an *sshole but in the bottom b&w pic she kinda looks like Nadya Sulman…

      • Kiddo says:

Aw, come on, just admit you’re in the 60% like the rest of us, lol.

      • V4Real says:

OMG Renee Nadya Sulman actually took photos of herself dressed as AJ from Tombraider and Mr. and Ms. Smith. She thinks she looks like Angie. Google the pics, it’s hilarious.

      • mayamae says:

Nadya Sulman had surgeries to look like Angie, then claimed she didn’t even know who Angelina Jolie was. Then I read her stripper name when she was younger was ….. Angelina. She’s a little obsessed.

  5. lisa2 says:

She was asked about not getting a nomination.. and didn’t sound upset. I’m sure she like anyone would have liked the film to be acknowledged that way.. but it is doing very well at the box office.. over 100 million so that I’m sure will help with the “pain”..

    • jessia says:

Yeah but how much do you think the editing and all that campaigning for the movie cost? Its gonna have to make way more then 100 million to be a hit or even pay back that atrocious amount of money spent on that Oscar expensive campaign she had. No other director was so over zealous in their campaigning like she was.

      • The Original G says:

Directors don’t market the film. The studio and producers do. They used Ang in the marketing because she’s the famous one. That’s why HW makes people famous. To make them into marketing vehicles.

      • noway says:

Usually it is double the production cost and then they are making money. This movie is at 101 million with a production cost of 65 million. It will end up making a nice profit for the studio. She should be happy for that.

      • Kim1 says:

Unbroken has made $115M Worldwide so it will be in the black.I am sure Angie is pleased with the BO numbers. As for awards I don’t think she or Brad are obsessed with awards.Angie’s first Oscar was kept in a storage facility for years. They rarely even attend awards show unless they are nominated. She may have been disapponted but I doubt she is upset, hurt, etc.
This tabloid also lied about that other Unbroken story.

  6. vauvert says:

Oh I don’t know… She has gotten so much recognition this year, Maleficent did really well, Unbroken is making money and people are loving it… Ffs she just screened it at the Vatican. I think she is just fine, but of course that kind of non-story wouldn’t sell, right?

    • Say What!? says:

Angelina or someone at Universal offered to screen the film for the Pope. He declined, but agreed to a drive by photo-op. Lots of films offer to screen at the Vatican. Philomena was screened there, a film the Pope actually took the time to watch. Steve Coogan went. I don’t ever remember anyone making such a big deal about it as Angelina going there.

      • mia girl says:

This past weekend I watched The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.
        I really liked it.

      • jessia says:

Exactly . They made a big deal about the Pope going to see her movie but he or his people told her no. He only did a 5 second meet and greet with her and left. He did not have any interest in seeing the movie.
Had no idea the Pope went to see Philomenia, I don’t recall Steve Coogan or Dame Judi Dench making a big deal about it like Angie or Universal did. Unbroken barely had Louis faith told in the movie and she has said before she has no religion. How can she cater to the catholic/Christian demographic when that part of the movie was barely shown?

      • Say What!? says:

        @ Mia

I love Steve Coogan. He’s apparently a raging drug addict in real life, but he’s done some great work.
Sadly, using the Pope as part of an Oscar marketing strategy is a thing people do.

        @ Jessie

EXACTLY. It’s weird to watch Jolie turn into this “religious” person all of a sudden. I was wondering why she was suddenly saying things like how having someone to call a husband was so important and how she wanted to learn how to cook so she can be a better wife to Brad.

Apparently they figured out that the conservative demographic was where Unbroken was going to make it’s money. I heard she even went on the 700 Club to promote it as a faith based film. Ugh, I really hope that’s not true.

      • @jessica
So when I say that meeting and spending time with my 93 year old WWI vet neighbor has taught me not to take my family and friends for granted, because of the story (that he has told me NUMEROUS times) about how he, as a young man, fresh off the boat in Italy, found out that his best friend in the whole wide world had been killed by the Germans (in the same vicinity where he had arrived) two days before he arrived–and how he hadn’t even known that he was there. I’ve heard that story so many times, I almost want to cry, because I know how it affects him.

Or when I say that I (and the rest of America) am lucky that, for the most part, we get to fit college into our life plans, and plan what we’re going to do next, what job we’re going to get–and do it all at our own pace, instead of doing a Civil Engineering Bachelor’s degree in TWO years; doing school six days a week, 10-12 hours a day, so the military can ship you off overseas to find landmines in the roads and beaches, left behind by the Germans.

Am I being disingenuous in saying all of that? FFS, she met a man whose faith helped him heal, and FORGIVE. She didn’t just meet with him once or twice and then made a movie–she had a relationship with him for going on two years. More, if he would’ve lived. And all she said was that she now believed that there was *something* out there that was greater than us–it could be aliens for all we know. Nowhere did she say that she was going to become a church going Christian. And is Angelina in charge of marketing the movie all by herself? It’s a movie about a man FAMOUS for being an Olympic athlete, WWII Vet, and a Christian. It stands to reason that they’d cater to all three demographics…..which they did. Is that a horrible thing? Wow.

      • Louise177 says:

Angelina doesn’t have PR. If she did, she would be commenting on every rumor that comes out like other publicists do. The funny thing is Angelina has done less promo than most, especially compared to Benedict Cumberbatch and Jennifer Aniston. She’s only done a few interviews. It seems like more because the international magazine also get covered. Since the cast is unknown and Angelina is a big name, she’s obviously going to do most of the promo, even if she’s just the director. I also have to laugh at the haters for acting like the Vatican screens movies everyday. The screening got a lot of publicity because Angelina was involved. It would also be news if it was George Clooney or Sandra Bullock. A small film starring Judi Dench isn’t going generate the same frenzy. It’s funny and bizarre how the haters overreact to the smallest things just because it involves Angelina.

    • vauvert says:

Sure, the Vatican and the Holy See meet with actors/directors every day. All movies screen there (with the Pope present or not) so it was no big deal… (Rolling eyes).

All I said is that AJ, who seems to be doing a pretty good job with no PR agent, had a fabulous year and nomination or not, she is not likely to be crying in her Chardonnay. She is even less likely to share her feelings, whatever they may be, with people who run to spill the goods to the press. She and Brad have proven they run a tight ship by how no one knew about the wedding before hand. They’re both old hands at the fame game and know exactly who to trust and how much to share. That’s why when I see stuff that does not come directly from them, I don’t buy it. They have broken up and had affairs how many times now over the last ten years? Right….

      • Say What!? says:

I know we all love to think she has no PR person, as if this huge global brand just happened accidentally and made her more genuine or something, but she has media advisors who run things through her manager, which is basically the same thing as having publicist.

The rest gets doled out to a giant marketing team and PR group that works for the studios. They’re not there just to market the films. They help her market her personal brand in order to market the film. She does the same thing with the PR team that works for the U.N. She provides all of the quotes about herself and how much she helps people while not specifically releasing the press release.

She has more PR teams working to promote her brand than anyone else in Hollywood. She was just smart enough not to leave any fingerprints that lead directly back to her. And I give her a ton of props for that. It’s a genius move, but let’s not pretend she doesn’t have publicists.

      • GoOnGirl! says:

Virginia and Vauvert: Very well said.

      • wolfpup says:

Add on: and her children never seem to misbehave in public!!! She is a miracle, right?

  7. Aysla says:

Memories of the The Tourist make me cringe. It’s truly a blight on their resumes, but I can’t really blame Depp or Jolie for taking it. Any excuse to make residence in Venice for a while– hell yeah, I’d have taken it too.

As for why it’s a thing… uh, gossip? Why is anything a thing?

    • Say What!? says:

I think that’s what Oceans 12 and 13 were all about. How can we get someone to pay us a ton of money while we hang out at George’s house in Como? Adam Sandler once admitted he does that. It’s a great gig if you can get it.

    • Lol Aysla–that was Angelina’s EXACT reason for doing The Tourist. She was interviewed by Vanity Fair a few months before the movie came out. I can’t remember what movie Brad was going to do, but she wanted a nice location, with a short filming time before Brad had to go do a movie–and that’s what they came up with, lol.

  8. Talie says:

They seemed to want to be taken a bit more seriously this year. There were no weird nominations overall.

  9. Greata says:

This is just Page Six trying to start a “thing.” Disappointed sure she is..but please I doubt she is curled up in a fetal position in a closet at Chateau Miraval while making Brad cry.

  10. V4Real says:

I’m sure she was disappointed about not being nominated, though some people will probably say Angie couldn’t care less about a nomination because they know Angie better than she knows herself. I agree with what that member of the foerign press said about the Globes being wowed by star power.

I actually liked the Tourist but Angie performance was not that great to garner her a nom. Just like I still believe JLaw’s performance in SLPB wasn’t award worthy.

  11. Fran says:

I thought Unbroken was a great movie, much better than any blockbuster on WW2.
And I’m not a Brangeloonie, I genuinely enjoy it, so did my husband who usually doesn’t care for this sort of movies.
She should be respected for that, and be awarded, as there are many shitty films out there which don’t deserve half the recognition they get!

    • jessia says:

There were so many good movies this year. I think those ones deserve more recongzation because they did good work . Unbroken wasn’t that great of a film compared to the other Oscar contenders and directors. This is one of the best years for Best Picture and Best Directors Oscars I think.

  12. I’m of two minds on this–

First, she said this: “What was strange to me is: This is a film that took 60 years and wasn’t a hot property and didn’t have a known cast,” she added. “It was kind of the little film that could, and suddenly became the film of great expectation. I just wanted to make sure I didn’t fail. I wasn’t expecting anything.” –this was in early December.

But I’ve also read/heard that Universal put their Oscar person on this movie, and so I’m guessing that they’re hoping for some Oscars. I’m not very familiar with the whole process (Oscar campaigning)–not beyond the obvious stuff (premieres, interviews). And if Universal wants an Oscar for this movie, that’s really not Angelina’s decision. She’s just the director, and she has to roll with the punches–especially since she’s starting out. But I think that awards are a validation, no matter how silly. We all like getting nominated for an award that says we stood out from the pack, no matter who we are, I think.

But I can see why she would feel that way i.e. not worried about awards. I think I connected with this story a lot because of her relationship with Louis–it kinda mirrors my own friendship with my Mr. Caspary (of four years). And I can guarantee you that if I wrote a book about his life story (and at this point, I probably could, because he’s a little forgetful and tells me the same stories over and over again), the last thing I’d be worried about is whether or not I was gonna get nominated for a Pulitzer. I would want him to like it, and for his family to think that I did a great job. Because I love him, and that’s what’s important to me.

      • She’s still in the nursing home, and not doing much better. Two of my mom’s friends work where she’s at and they say that she acts a monkey i.e. throws a FIT when he has to leave–he has to calm her down. Her memory’s to the point to where she doesn’t really understand anything for more than a few minutes. She doesn’t understand why she has to stay there, and he has to go home–without her. And the weather’s been so bad lately (we’ve been getting snow up the whazoo every day for the past two weeks), I’m afraid he hasn’t been able to safely drive and see her.

    • EM says:

I read that the film studio were not impressed with her original cut, viewed it as not marketable, and put together their own cut to market/screen. Now whether that’s true or not is anyone’s guess, but that also leaked out to the media.

      • Except 90% of the time that’s what studios do. Harvey Weinstein is famous for that–dumbing down films to play for his vision of “Middle America”…no matter what movie it is. I think very few directors have a say on the final cut–like Spielberg, Scorcesse, etc……..that’s why a lot of times there’s the director’s cut on the dvd.

I like her, but some of her scenes, supposed to be cathartic, felt cheesy and forceful instead. Also there’s a swamp of biopics this year.

    • jessia says:

Or it just wasn’t that good or worthy of awards. Some fans of hers blindly like whatever she does and think just because awards aren’t thrown at her, it means those awards must have no meaning then. See how some ppl are commenting about the GG not being important because they didn’t nominate her or Unbroken for awards? A case of sour grapes.

      • Gena says:

Well said. If it was just a case of being overlooked by the GG’s, that would be one thing. This film was also not worthy of any the guild award nominations either – SAG, Writer’s guild, Producer’s guild, ACE (editor’s guild). And no BAFTA noms. Maybe Unbroken gets Oscar noms, but it will be tough to win any of the big Oscar categories without any guild noms. The movie was released in plenty of time to be in award contention. Everybody and their brother got a screener for this movie.

Also – she was a producer AS WELL AS director of this movie – so she still wins in the end because this movie is making $$$$$$$$$.

      • kim says:

        I know.
I understand the fascination with her, but please, she’s not a stand out director. Good intention doesn’t always cover all the flaws of actual movie. Especially in year like this.

Will you guys give it a rest and please stop talking about Jennifer Aniston? This thread is about Angelina Jolie. Now, about “Unbroken” … I think an award from the American Film Institute speaks volumes. Say what you will and diss all you want. The truth is that the majority of critics and people who actually saw the film didn’t find it appalling. I just think expectations were so high that the actual film paled in comparison.

Oh and I really don’t think Jolie-Pitt fans are dissing the Golden Globes because of Angelina Jolie. You must be new here.

Did you see this week’s alleged news “rehashing of Angelina’s suicide attempt in 2009”? I was shocked to read headline at first and then realized it’s old gossip. She was a cutter when she teenager, very emotional.

HFPA wanted to be taken seriously and they nominated Jennifer for an award, yeah right.

  19. jessia says:

There were better films this year then Unbroken was. Better directors then she was. Sorry but this is the game of awards. You can’t be butthurt after directing 2 film and expect awards thrown at your feet just because she is a big movie star. Those other directors are properly trained, have paid their dues and have actual talent and skills to make great movies. She does not. I think Angelina only directed Unbroken because she thought it would get her Oscars, there was no heart in the movie at all. The movie honesty wasn’t that great and I enjoyed films like Boyhood, Gone Girl, Theory of Everything, Birdman and think those directors should be rewarded for their good work.

    • Paige says:

      @Jessia
“I think Angelina only directed Unbroken because she thought it would get her Oscars, there was no heart in the movie at all”. I really don’t think we watched the same movie. Unbroken was good, it wasn’t fantastic and to say she made a film to just get an Oscar sounds like a weird assumption. Maybe you should go read some of the things she’s said about Louie and his family. I’m sure sure she was disappointed but I really don’t think she was crying a bath tub of tears like some want to believe.

    • I think it’s disgusting and insulting to say something like that (directing the film just to get an Oscar nom)….she clearly formed a bond with him and his family. You don’t have to like her OR the movie, but you don’t need to insult their friendship like that.

      • G&T says:

She’s not insulting their friendship at all. She said that AJ wanted to direct this Oscar-baity movie to receive an Oscar, which is very plausible.

She never even met him until after she was signed on to direct the film.

      • jessia says:

@ Paige and Virgillia, Please tell me how was my saying she only directed the film to get Oscars as being disgusting? Did I insult Angelina personally? You need to learn how to read.
It was pretty obvious she was only interested in the material because it screamed Oscar. There is nothing wrong with saying that.
BTW, she has never even heard of the man until 2-3 years , when she started directing it.
I remember a post a long time ago about Benedicit Cumberbatch playing Alan Turing for the Imitation Game last year and everyone was accusing him of only playing the role because its was Oscar baity. So when others act/direct its okay to claim they are doing it for the Oscars, but when Angie does it, we are not allowed to say that? Even its true?
I just can’t with the fanaticism with this woman. She was gunning for the big awards at the Oscars whether you admit it or not.

    • Katherine says:

It’s a rather uninformed notion to disregard an actor’s experiences as training for directing. That experience alone gives many actors a real leg up on many new directors out of film school where they were “properly trained.”

As reviews by a good number of hardened and excellent film critics have noted with Unbroken and Jolie’s first venture into feature films, she has great potential as a director and is already showing talent in directorial skills such as getting wonderful performances out of her actors. There are various aspects to directing and as she progresses and matures I’m sure Jolie will strengthen other directorial skills.

I am thrilled to see another woman step behind the camera and I am happy to see how she has handled Unbroken as imperfect as it may be.

  20. Christin says:

Some of the most engaging movies I have ever watched never received any type of award. Sometimes overlooked little gems end up being cult favorites that stand the test of time.

I don’t know if Unbroken will fall into that category, but if it does, that is better than a GG nomination.

    • truthSF says:

I think it being only her second film and making over $100 million at the domestic plus whatever extra $ it will make overseas is rewarding enough. Because making a hit movie would absolutely guarantee her more future directorial work over any nomination(s).

A nomination would be nice, but as it’s only her second feature film she’s directed, Jolie has a lot of time to pave her way to a much more deserving nomination for a better work. Give her time, she can only improve.

I just wish Selma was better received by the public to make more money at the BO. Hopefully MLK weekend would give it a nice increase at the box office.

      • Camille (The Original) says:

Agree with you about AJ completely truthSF. She’s still just a beginner director.
If the movie had flopped badly that would have been more hurtful I imagine.

    • Anne tommy says:

Christina, I Agree somewhat, but one film that was totally overlooked a few Years ago was the great Take Shelter, with Michael Shannon outstanding in the lead. There is a man who never gets any coverage here, I think he’s much more interesting that the generic pretty boys. Angie’s expectations may have been a bit high.

    • Jessica says:

It’s definitely not an overlooked gem or a future cult favourite. It’s by the numbers Oscars bait that turned out extremely mediocre.

  21. The Original G says:

She probably is a bit disappointed, along with Clint Eastwood, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott. She’s in pretty good company and her box office isn’t too shabby either. But she’s got momentum in her career moving forward.

  22. delorb says:

Yeah right. The GG would like to think that, but I doubt it. If she were able to ‘buy’ a nomination in the past (which became a running joke that even the general public recognized), why would getting snubbed by them this year matter?

She knows how the game is played. If the GG wants to be taken seriously, then they should stop nominating people for movies like ‘The Tourist’. A movie that I liked, BTW. It wasn’t trying to be anything other than an amusing time-waster.

Now they want us to think that they actually mean something to someone like Jolie to the point that she’s ‘upset’ or ‘sad’? Not happening.

  23. Anny says:

I saw it and it’s just not that good. It didn’t get positive reviews. Only 49 % on RT. I get she is hurt or upset (I would be too, frankly) but she just didn’t do a good enough job to get this kind of recognition despite numerous PR efforts and serious campaigning. Maybe next time, her career as a director is just beginning and obviously she has some pull when it comes to great source material/good scripts.

    • jessia says:

This is got to be one of the lowest ratings for a supposedly Oscar conetndor then. I know the Academy nominated Extremely Loud and Close or whatever despite a very low score, but I think they have learned from that mistake. I don’t even think Unbroken will get the 10th spot for Best Picture. Its out the window for Oscars I think. Jolie’s directing wasn’t praised all that well either. She is out of the Best Director category.

      • McKitten says:

Not trying to perpetuate Triangleness, but I believe Cake scored lower on RT and metacritic.

Anyway, I haven’t seen the movie but from what I’ve heard it’s a bit overwrought and cloying at times. The most positive reviews I’ve read were regarding O’Connell’s performance and not Angie’s direction.

That being said, I can’t be the only one that doubts Angie is that upset that she didn’t get award recognition?

I just don’t see her as someone who is seeking validation from the Hollywood community. She strikes me as a person who pursues projects that she’s interested in, without considering whether that project will garner accolades from the public or not.

      • Krystal says:

@Jessia While IF it’s nominated I would love to see your response lol

      • lisa2 says:

Unbroken is at 63% with the Top critics

too bad that the naysayers are still upset the film is doing well. And if Unbroken is a failure based on BO then Into the Woods is one too.

      • Anny says:

Actually, 63 % is not what I would call a success or a sign of a good movie. I really don’t care that much how it is doing…
I believe she is upset – she strikes me as an ambitious and determined person. Also, she campaigned pretty hard and worked quite hard on creating the buzz around this movie. Too bad it kind of backfired.
If it is nominated, it would be a sign that Academy Awards decided to give Angelina Jolie a nod based on her “celebrity status” rather than talent or accomplishment. For some it might be enough but I hope AJ is a better person than that.

      • Anny says:

I don’t really see what Cake ratings got to do with Unbroken? It scored pretty low. Jennifer Aniston getting a nom based on her acting is different that Angelina Jolie not getting a nom for directing. Nomination for acting is based around one role and not a whole movie.

      • G&T says:

Except it’s not at 63% with top critics according to RT, it’s at 42%, I just checked. Unless you mean on some other site?

It’s Oscar chances are very slim, especially after getting shut out of the Baftas.

      • Say What!? says:

Unbroken has a 49% rating and is being pushed for Best Picture and Best Director which is pretty ludicrous. The Oscar strategist they hired to push Unbroken for the oscars was hired before they even finished the film. The reality is it just didn’t live up to the expectations they set themselves.

Not sure what Cake has to do with any of this, but it’s not being pushed for Director or Picture. Aniston’s performance is what stands out. If Jolie’s directing had stood out she would have been nominated.

I do think it’s kind of weird that now that she has missed out on a bunch of nominations and Aniston hasn’t suddenly these awards are a joke and they can be bought. I never heard that once in the years when Jolie and Pitt were nominated for their work. If these nominations are for sale that means they were for sale then too. That is not something that conveniently happened the second Aniston showed up.

Aniston hustled like everyone else. The difference is she didn’t spend an entire year campaigning. She didn’t have a major studio behind her and she didn’t have a $20 million plus tv ad campaign touting her efforts.

I know if it were Jolie who’d managed all of the nominations Aniston has gotten so far and she did it without the help from a big studio and a mega million dollar ad campaign we’d be claiming the Jolie’s work stood on its own without all that help and we’d be praising the shit out of her for her tenacity.

      • KittenMcMuffin says:

“This is got to be one of the lowest ratings for a supposedly Oscar conetndor then. ”

This is what I was responding to.
Aniston is an Oscar contender for a film that by most people’s standards, got very poor reviews.

“The difference is she didn’t spend an entire year campaigning.”

Except she did though. Ok, maybe not a year, but 8 months since the first time we saw her brave makeup-free candids from the set and heard the O-word being bounced around.

Look, I’m happy to see Aniston breaking out of her box, but let’s not pretend that she wasn’t the only thing that saved Cake from being completely and totally panned.

      • Say What!? says:

        @mckitten

Come on now. A few photos from a film set is NOT an Oscar campaign. No one said one word about any oscars until it was screened in Toronto at the end of September when people had actually seen her performance and gave her a huge standing ovation.

That’s a fraction of the time and money Jolie and Universal spent. The problem with Unbroken is that they spent so much time campaigning before even one person not associated with the film actually saw it. Once people started seeing it the entire campaign fell apart.

      • Jessica says:

Kitten, Cake isn’t a contender for Best Picture, it didn’t even attempt to go there. Jennifer Aniston is an Oscar contender, the film itself isn’t.

Actors get nominated and even win for great performances in average films all the time, especially in the Best Actress catgeory. Nothing unusual about that.

Unbroken was gunning for the big awards for filmmaking (Best Film, Director), and you can’t get nominated for those when the general consensus is that the filmmaking was at best mediocre.

      • Tarsha says:

Say What!? everyone at Toronto gets a huge standing ovation. Making out she is special, is not sticking to the facts when every movie gets an ovation.

      • KittenMcMuffin says:

“Actors get nominated and even win for great performances in average films all the time, especially in the Best Actress catgeory.”

What are some of the films where an actress won as Oscar for a film that was critically panned?

Also, is 46% on Metacritic considered “average”? If so, then why didn’t I pass 10th grade Geometry?

        …so many questions…

      • G&T says:

Glenn Close was nominated for Albert Noobs, Jodie Foster was for Nell, and Bette Midler was for For the Boys.

Sandra Bullock won for The Blind Side which had mixed-to-good reviews and Elizabeth Taylor famously/unfairly won for Butterfield 8.

@Janet, I did check and it still says 42%.
        Average Rating: 5.6/10
        Reviews Counted: 36
        Fresh: 15
        Rotten: 21

        Weird.

      • Say What!? says:

Name a film where an actress won for a critically panned film? This one is super easy.

Meryl Streep in the almost unwatchable Iron Lady and Jessica Lange in Blue Sky

@tarsha your comment is not true. Lots of people can’t even get people to attend screenings at most of these festivals let alone get a standing ovation. Aniston got one in a sold out theater with 1500 people. Even Julianne Moore admitted in an interview a few weeks ago that no one came to see Still Alice in Toronto because they were all at the Cake screening. Look it up.

      • Charlie says:

I read some pretty bad reviews of La Vie en and Marion won an Oscar.

      • KittenMcMuffin says:

Fair enough but I need to point out that all the movies you guys mentioned still scored better than Cake:

        Iron Lady= 54%
        Blue Sky= 53%
        The Blind Side = 54%
        Nell= 65%
        Albert Noobs = 57%
La Vie En Rose = 66%

Also, I like Aniston and everything but let’s not get crazy and start comparing her to Jessica Lange, Glenn Close or Helen Mirren. I mean, come on now. The aforementioned are all stellar actresses—some of the best of our time.
You’re allowed to compare her to Sandy though–they’re definitely in the same acting caliber.

It’s just hard for me to believe that Aniston gives a strong enough performance in Cake to drag a dud of a movie out of the water.
Then again, as G&T said, the Academy Awards gave Bullock a statue for The Blind Side and a nom for Gravity so anything is possible.

      • jessia says:

@ Jolie fans. I don’t know where Aniston came into this debate because I wasn’t talking about her or her movie. I was talking about Unbroken, which has a pretty low score on RT and a boatload of negatives, being touted as an awards contender and that its one of the most badly reviewed movie to be up for Best Picture and Best Director this year.
I didn’t see majority of the critics raving about the film overall or Angie’s directing. Some said she even completely missed the point of Louis story, which was true. How can you still rally for an Oscar if people are criticinzing your directing skills this badly?
Angie did hustled big time for the awards this year and lost badly. Unbroken really wasn’t that great of a film compared to the other ones which are also competing for Best Picture and Best Director. She already lost out on the DGA this morning, so what are the film’s chances of getting Best Picture or Best Director for Oscars at this point? Some fans of Angie need to get their heads out of the sand. She didn’t do a good job with this movie and she isn’t a talented director so far. I have seen the movie and I don’t think many of her fans have seen it. They are just defending her and her movie because they like her. Lots of people weren’t impressed with this movie overall.

      • G&T says:

I wouldn’t dream of suggesting that Meryl Streep has anything to worry about, but JA could definitely get a nom. Even if she doesn’t, this is the first time her name has even been mentioned in the same breath as Oscar, so I’m sure she’s happy.

And don’t forget that Cake hasn’t been released yet and has barely any reviews. I can’t believe I’m defending it, as I will probably never see it, but it just seems silly to call it a dud before it even hits theaters.

        Butterfield 8 = 48%
        For the Boys = 38%

      • Jessica says:

As others have said, Bullock, Liz Taylor, Glenn Close, Jodie Foster, Meryl in The Iron Lady and Julie & Julia (it got ok reviews but nearly all of them made a point of saying Meryl and to a lesser extent Stanley Tucci were the only reason it was getting a decent score). Cate Blanchett was nominated for the Elizabeth sequel which scored just 35% on RT (and she wasn’t even very good in it). I could give you a ton of examples from the 30’s-60’s, but those movies come up with barely any reviews on RT and Metactritic so not really relevant here.

There’s also all the films that are re-evaluated soon after awards season. Crash for example scores 75% on RT. Ask the same reviewers to review it today and it would be lucky to get 30%. A lot of Best Actress winners and nominees films haven’t held up as ‘great films’ (Erin Brokovich, Monsters Ball, North Country, Silver Linings Playbook, The Reader, La Vie En Rose, Something’s Gotta Give…I could go on for a while).

Anyway, yes Cake is getting average scores. A film getting a score smack bang in the middle doesn’t mean it’s a terrible or even bad film, just that it’s not a really good or great film. There’s a lot of perfectly enjoyable, quite well made films that sit at around 40%-60%. A true dud scores more like 10%-25%.

BTW the Cake screener is out there for anyone curious. I watched it yesterday. The movies fine, not anything amazing but not bad either. There’s a few gimmicks I could have done without (didn’t need to actually see Anna Kendricks character) and it drifts a bit in the last third before bouncing back, but there’s some really great choices too. Aniston is honestly excellent in the role, she nails the dark comedy but also the raw, dramatic scenes. There’s one scene in particular where I think she showed she has real acting chops, but it’s a bit of a spoiler. Anyway, this year I’d say she’s earned a nomination. Not a win though.

BTW, for people wondering why the other actors aren’t promoting it, Felicity Huffman and Chris Messina are in it for about 3 mins, William H. Macy for just over one minute, Anna Kendrick for maybe about 5 minutes. Sam Worthington has a small-ish supporting role and the only other actor with any real screen-time is Adriana Barraza, who’s great in it but who obviously isn’t going to front a publicity campaign when you have Aniston willing to put in the time.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

    • Janet says:

G&T, you checked the wrong movie. Unbroken is at 49% with all critics, and 63% with top critics.

Cake is at 44% with all critics and 40% with top critics.

Check rottentomatoes yourself if you don’t believe me.

    • Krystal says:

@ Say What Did she run over your cat or something?

    • Paige says:

@ Say What It seems like you are completely overlooking how hard Jennifer Aniston is hustling for this film. Her hustle game is very strong, and to deny the fact and say she isn’t hustling just as hard as Angelina or on the level of Cumberbatch and Hathaway is just ridiculous. I haven’t seen any of the other actors in her film do anything. It’s been only talk about her role and all the others have been completely forgotten. It’s a strategy her publicist has used. She isn’t the only actress to hustle for an award and she won’t be the last. Btw where are the fantastic reviews about her performance in Cake? It seems like the reviews for her film are pretty average and for her performance. I’m happy to see her do a dramatic role. I loved her in Good Girl, however if she deserves the credit for her role she earns it. If if her role is just okay and she has all these nominations with actresses like Julianne Moore that are more worthy is based on her hustle and not her talent.

      • Say What!? says:

I made a point of saying Aniston was hustling like all the others. She just hustled with a lot less money than some of the others. But of course she hustled. They ALL hustle.

As for your other points…where are the fabulous reviews for Angie’s directing? What about all of the people who starred in the film? I feel like we could go around and around on this, no?

Perhaps neither one of them is worthy. It’s a matter of opinion. Sandra Bullock wasn’t worthy when she actually won. And she hustled so hard she started her acceptance speech with how hard she hustled.

      • Paige says:

I didn’t say Angelina directing had praise.. I even stated in an earlier post the reviews were average, good, but not great for the film and her directing. I brought up Aniston acting because that seems like the main focus here, her acting not the movie. I’ve read a few reviews for her acting and as I said before they have been average. I’ve yet to read one that said she did an outstanding job, and she deserved all these nominations. People can be frank on here and complain about Unbroken being disappointing and Angelina hustling but when some says Jennifer has hustled just as much and she’s receiving nominations not because of her talent it’s an attack on her character. Plenty of people on here have said the same and they aren’t fans of either women. They said both women hustled and both really don’t deserve nominations because her film was average and her acting was average in Cake. There are way more worthy actress, directors, and films. To wander your question about the other actors, I’ve seen Miyavi and Jack O Connell more than Anna Kendrick and Sam Worthington promoting their films.

  24. c'est la vie says:

I doubt that she really minded. Well, maybe just a little bit…

God, I’ve got to see the Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman.

    • Gena says:

I saw Grand Budapest months and months ago – I think when it first came to iTunes…???- only because my hubby wanted to see it…. I loved it so much! I was pleasantly surprised. I’m really happy to see it get recognition 🙂
I’m dying to see Birdman because I ADORE Michael Keaton! Just haven’t had a chance – but after seeing his sweet speech at GG’s – I MUST see it this weekend!

    • mia girl says:

Yes see them both. My two favorites films of this award season
(although I haven’t seen Whiplash or The Immitation Game yet).

    • Say What!? says:

I loved Grand Budapest Hotel, a lot more than I liked Boyhood actually.

    • Esmom says:

I thought Grand Budapest was great, although I have liked a few of Wes Anderson’s films more (Rushmore, Moonlight Kingdom). But Ralph Fiennes was sublime in it, definitely earned all the recognition he’s gotten so far.

  25. EM says:

If she is upset, she shouldn’t be. The film made a profit. If it was another bomb, like her first effort, then yes, but that wasn’t the case.

  26. insomniac says:

I’m sure she’s disappointed, but I doubt like hell she will ever throw a public “As God is my witness, I shall NEVER campaign again” fit should she miss out on the Oscar nominations too. She’s way too savvy for that.

    • Renee says:

I don’t think that she would either. She is VERY well behaved in public.

I can understand why Michael Fassbender was upset but I also think that he was ridiculous to be so bitter. The majority of the voting academy is apparently made up of older, very conservative types, it’s no wonder that the film didn’t get recognized by them. But that doesn’t mean that his later work wouldn’t, and now he’s kind of shot himself in the foot by making that public declaration. But maybe he was checking himself too for getting his expectations up like that and made himself realign his priorities.

  27. Josephine says:

I think the competition was just too great this year, and that the movie was fine but not outstanding. I did think the actor that played the main role might get a nod though.

She has her Oscar and this is just her second time directing, isn’t it? I honestly think it would be absurd to expect a nomination for any award, and I doubt she did. I think she loved the movie and was proud of bringing the story to life, and for a female director with no track record, she was entrusted with a huge budget. I hope more women get those kind of chances.

    • Renee says:

That would be ideal if more women were given opportunities to direct after both Salma and Unbroken. Fingers crossed…

  28. Jayna says:

Of course, she was disappointed. Any director who put time and effort into a movie and were passionate aboutttheir project and campaigned for it would be. This is their work. They get disappointed and then move on. She’s not wallowing in it. It’s been recognized elsewhere anyway.

  29. Elly says:

i think the Globes wanted to change their image a little bit this year. In the past they gave nominations and awards to everyone famous and that didn´t work that good. This year they were more serious and actually awarded talent and really good movies.
I hope the Oscars do the same, but i doubt that.

  30. Heather says:

It is ridiculous that stars think they can get an award for just being famous. There are a ton of gifted directors, actors, producers, etc out there that never get a chance because the HFP or whomever does not genuinely rate a performance or a film on its merits. That is not the way things should be, so I am glad the film got shut out if they felt it was not deserving. Awards do not mean anything if they can be easily “bought,” they must be earned.

Now the same applies to actresses, just to be fair, like Jennifer Aniston. God knows she is not a great actress but her “campaign” got her where she was this year. I thought I would also throw that out there to the haters that would flame me for daring to write something bad about the Jolie.

    • Say What!? says:

I always thought Sandra Bullock was kind of mediocre. I don’t really think she deserved to win for The Blind Side. I don’t think these awards are bought, but like anything they are voted on by people with different tastes, agendas etc.

      • Camille (The Original) says:

I felt the same way after seeing Jlaw in Silver Linings Playbook. So average.

      • Charlie says:

Penelope Cruz in Vicky Chritina Barcelona.

      • I couldn’t believe Sandra B. got an Oscar for The Blind Side. To me, the movie was really boring, and nothing special.

And OT–I wish I could muster up courage to watch Whiplash, but I’m really sensitive about bullies. Like I don’t think I can watch that movie without crying the whole way through. I could barely watch the trailer without flinching.

  31. Paloma says:

I don’t understand the buzz for Gone Girl. Completely mediocre film.
Unbroken is really good, in my opinion.

    • LIli says:

Totally. I hated Gone Girl, Rosamund whatever her name is was so robotic, so fake it was a waste of my money, such a dumb story. Haven’t watched Unbroken yet…

  32. Mellie says:

I’ve read the book and absolutely loved it. I’m scared to see the movie because so many people say it’s so-so and that would make me feel terribly bad for Louis Zamperini and all that he went through. Is it really that bad or are people just anti-Angelina?

    • Paige says:

It seems like most people that saw it said it was good but not great. However some really enjoyed it. It still don’t think its bad as some are making it out to be. It isn’t anywhere near a horrible film.

    • Maya says:

Well let me put it this way – the critics went in to watch this movie with their knives sharpen.

And sites such as RT are rigged and something is going on behind the scenes. There are atleast 20 reviews with the score of 2.4/4 – that’s a fresh score but for some personal reason RT scored it Rotten. Metacritic has it at 60% which is a lot more realistic.

But the most important thing is that this movie received a Cinemascore A- from the millions of people who actually saw it with any prejudice or dislike for Angelina. I have seen hundreds of tweet from normal people who loved the movie.

The question is – would you rather trust critics who are biased, prejudiced and mind already set or would you believe in the people and their words?

      • Gena says:

How do you know critics went to watch this movie w/ their knives sharpened? That seems so silly and paranoid. Movie critics wouldn’t jeopardize their creditability to partake in some “conspiracy to get Angelina.” Don’t forget, there were other HUGE name movie makers involved in this movie as well.

My personal opinion – it was a disappointing movie. But for me, that’s usually the case when I love a book then go see the movie (Gone Girl, Memoirs of a Geisha, Girl w/Dragon Tattoo…so many!).

We can agree to disagree on whether the critics “were out to get Angelina,” but none of her peers nominated this movie for most of the prestige awards either (I stated this up thread already). Unbroken didn’t get noms for WGA, PGA, ACE, SAG, BAFTA etc…

      • Say What!? says:

Wow, that’s quite the conspiracy theory Gena. But we should all remember your theory. That way the next time someone uses rottentomatoes to slam another actress we can let them all know the system is rigged.

Btw, critics don’t vote for SAGS or BAFTAS. Jolie’s peers do. And the DGA, which snubbed her this morning, also her peers. Ironically, I believe the Critics Choice Awards is one of the few place where Unbroken was actually nominated.

      • mayamae says:

Maya, you repeatedly bring up the comment about rotten tomatoes, but I think I’m missing your point. When I check RTs site, I never look to see if it’s been labelled “fresh” or “rotten”, I look at the score itself. But if I go by those words, RT has Unbroken at 49% – which I imagine could honestly be labelled “rotten”. What am I missing? I’m not being sarcastic, I’m trying to understand your point.

    • insomniac says:

My sister loved the book but thought the movie was underwhelming. As far as I know, she has no particular opinion on Angelina and the name never even came up while she was telling me about the movie, but she didn’t seem to enjoy it.

    • pleaseicu says:

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say it’s bad. Most of the comments that I’ve seen are that it’s a good effort and good film but they don’t think it’s great or awardsworthy, especially in a packed year like this year for best film and best director.

    • DJ says:

I went to see it because I had read the book, and was extremely disappointed!

    • Eh, if I had read the book, I’d probably be disappointed too. Louis’ life was so extraordinary. I think it’s hard to make it into a movie, because how do you put some of the stuff he did (like stealing the Nazi flag or shaking Hitler’s hand) in there, without it being cliche/feel like it was just thrown in there (and not true)??? And beyond that–movies are never as good as books. EVER. I read Jane Eyre at least twice a year, and the only version that I love of the book is the 2006 version w/Ruth Wilson. But it still PALES to the book. I’m still upset that Helen was a tagline in the movie, lol.

I’d say go to the movies (with books to movies adaptations) to be entertained, and to see a snapshot of the book.

  33. Thinker says:

I firmly believe this film was never poised to win awards, simply because the book itself was so phenomenal. The author, Laura Hillenbrand, is an uncommonly detailed and thorough story teller. She attributes part of this to her own illness, her own inability to go out in the world and live a life. Instead she truly enters the space and story she weaves. Unbroken, like Seabiscuit, is an exceptional book, and a beautiful story, and full of facts that are ALL TRUE! Hillenbrand also writes tersely, there is no sentimentality in the book. It’s fast paced and brimming to capacity with details.

How could any director capture all of those details in a 2 hour film? The story itself could be reduced, as Angelina did, she only took on the years up to and including the POW camp. But, something of the story’s heart is lost in that way. Inevitably.

Seabiscuit was not critically acclaimed either, and won very few awards. It’s still a great story, and a great movie. I just believe that when the book is so exceptional, the movie will always pale in comparison.

  34. kendra says:

OMG is Angelina life so perfect, every little blown up has to be a major loss. We all have jobs where we fill overlooked and unappreciated , it’s called life. I would be very disappointed in Angelina if she was upset because she did not get some award, when her movie is doing quite well. Angelina has said that she knows how truly blessed her life is, she has many things to be thankful for. If she gets an award for Unbroken great, if not I’m sure it will still be all good.

  35. wolfpup says:

Jolie thinks that she deserves it all! She won’t stop trying –

  36. minime says:

I watched Maleficent last week and it was a quite cool Disney movie. Angelina was pretty cool on it and made it worth watching.
Now I was planning to watch Unbroken but I have only read bad to average reviews. Is there someone who watched it that would actually recommend it?

  37. RobN says:

It would only be natural to be disappointed. It would be weird not to be. Being married to Brad Pitt or being interested in lots of things beside making movies doesn’t change the natural human reaction of being upset that your work wasn’t appreciated.

  38. Lucky Charm says:

I saw Seabiscuit with my kids. And sobbed like a 13 year old girl who’s crush just started dating another girl, for half that movie. The scene where his parents decided to leave him with the trainer broke my heart; as a mom I would be devastated to have to make that choice. But I thought it was a great movie.

  39. L says:

Not everything you touch turns to gold, honey!

  40. Amcn says:

I loved Unbroken, the book and the movie. I saw it with my girlfriend and husband and they both loved it. My in laws loved it. And these are not gossip site AJ fans. I think I would rather it miss the oscars than just get one nom where it definitely won’t win.
I agree Gone Girl is not all that. And neither was Boyhood. I don’t get that movie. My husband really liked it but I call it the Seinfeld movie because it is a movie about nothing. And I expected more from Selma. It was 2 hours of excessive dialogue. Of course the subject matter is extremely important but the movie was not as spell binding as reviewed. I liked the grand Budapest hotel and Nightcrawler. Can’t bring myself to watch Birdman.
Anyway, it’s all very subjective. I think critics tend to fall in line with each other. Unbroken has done so well at the boxoffice and it shouldn’t have been hyped as the Oscar contender. I think she may be disappointed but I don’t think it will take her long to get over it.

    • Gena says:

Did you not like Boyhood? So funny – we’ve had the screener for Boyhood for weeks and I can’t muster the interest to watch it! Glad to hear from someone who’s seen it that my initial instinct was correct! Really want to see Nightcrawler.

Funny aside – we got the screener for Whiplash very early – before there was really any buzz about it – my hubby gave it to a colleague without either of us having seen it. I’m dying to see it after reading some of the reviews and of course my hubby won’t ask his colleague for the movie back. Guess he’ll have to take me on date to see it now!

  41. Tarsha says:

What a made up non-story. Any actor or actress or director whose film isn’t recognised would be disappointed, duh. So a tabloid ran with common human nature and created a story.

  42. Jacqueline says:

Obviously, I’m way, way down the thread, but I don’t think I saw any sentiment that maybe she has loved and crafted this film and was so enamored of the man himself, that she would certainly be upset if it wasn’t even recognized? It isn’t a stretch to imagine a HUGE project at work or in school that you just worked your ass off on, and the professor/boss says, “meh.” Well, you put your heart and soul into that bloody thing and WTF?! It’s crushing.
Whether or not this is good, bad or in between, it doesn’t change how she feels about her baby.

  43. Annie says:

I think any actor or director would feel a bit upset if a project they invested a lot of themselves in
    gets overlooked. It’s human nature.
Angie can still go on being her fabulous self!

  44. Janet says:

Whether or not the movie was snubbed by the GG nominating committee (and lets not forget these are the people who nominated Pia Zadora, FFS), Unbroken is a solid hit that will get Angie recognized as a director who can deliver and will get her hired by more studios. Unless she has a disaster of Michael Cimino proportions, I think her future as a director the studios want is assured. She has proven she can put butts in seats.

  45. daughterofjean says:

My girlfriend went to see Unbroken. She said she left part way through along with a number of other people. She said it was boring and the beatings went on and on and on. Too bad as I loved the book. Perhaps it should have been made as a television series on HBO?

  46. Tiffany says:

AJ was given 70 million dollars to direct which is essentially her first film ( I am an Agneloonie but I cannot count ITLOBH) and it is going to turn a profit.

I know Ava DuVernay by name and will be on the lookout for her films in the future.

Nominations or not, I would like to think that this is a step in the right direction for female directors.

If Ridley Scott, who has been making expensive, overblown flops for the last decade can still get work, so can women.

Award winning films will peak my interest but it will not be the sole reason that I see a film.

  47. HoustonGrl says:

I don’t know if she’s hurt or not, but does anyone really take these big awards seriously anymore? They seem like they are all about hype and self congratulating among the hollywood elites. Shame should have gotten a slew of awards for which it wasn’t even nominated. Actors like Jennifer Aniston thinking they actually have a shot just shows what a circus this has become. Clooney over Streep for a lifetime achievement award? Pass the sick bucket. I think if anything, Jolie should be FLATTERED. As a viewer, I’m much more inclined to select a movie based on festival placement and small critical success than some stupid trophy.

  48. GirlyGIrl says:

    From Rotten Tomatoes

“Unbroken is undoubtedly well-intentioned, but it hits a few too many of the expected prestige-pic beats to register as strongly as it should.”

When people make a movie specifically to win awards, the movie will often stink.

But I’m not sure I believe this story

  49. Lilo says:

What does Jen have to do with this? People also need to realize that Cake is not out yet and only 16 reviews are posted for it. Comparing it to Unbroken which already has over 100 reviews is pointless especially since her acting is what is getting praise and not directing or best picture. Again I want to like Angie, but some of this blind love for her baffles me. Lets give credit where credit is due. I watched Unbroken, because the previews were awesome and I had read the book. The movie is not that great and doesn’t deserve any huge nominations. It would be such a shame if Unbroken was nominated over Selma and other movies which were way greater than Unbroken. I am not being mean to Angie. Just stating the facts. It’s okay to accept that your favorite messed up in this and that. It means they are human. She has a lot of opportunities to make good movies and with her director friends, it should be no problem seeing her nominated for an oscar in the upcoming years. This is not the movie though.

  50. Carol says:

Unbroken doesn’t deserve to be in any best film list at all. I saw it and thought it was an OK film but certainly uneven and not a bit close to the quality of such films like Grand Budapest Hotel or Boyhood. Glad it did well in the box office so it may help Angelina get another directing opportunity by the studios.

    • Yog says:

Some people who’d seen it said it was a bit simplistic and shallow. She’s too way into the heroic individual thing. But kudos to her for trying. I doubt I could direct a two minute short or put together something that’s 1% of her films.

  51. India Andrews says:

Eastwood is a Republican so he’s going to be shut out of awards now that he’s politically out of the closet in that Democrat town. He’s going to have to go to bed at night knowing in his heart that he makes great movies because the powers in Hollywood aren’t going to acknowledge him anymore.

Angelina who knows. Maybe the powers don’t think she’s been a director for long enough to earn nominations.

  52. rudy says:

GRand Budapest Hotel was absolutely amazing. Gorgeous cinematography, very funny, wonderful characters, great story. You don’t even have to like Wes Anderson;s style to like the movie.

I did not see Unbroken and never will. Can;t deal with torture scenes. But after watching the Directors Roundtable with Angie, it is evident that she is NEW at directing and well aware of that fact. But she was able to sit at that table and hold her own with some of the most famous directors in the world. I can definitely see her turning into an amazing director, perhaps much better director than actress.

I am stunned that Ava DuVernay was NOT nominated for Directors Guild award.

My friends say AMerican Sniper is fantastic, just opened in a few theaters in NYC.

I was told Boyhood was disappointing. WAy too long but a real groundbreaking movie on many levels.

  53. Nicole says:

She is so attractive it’s unbelievable.
