Keifer Sutherland used to babysit Gwyneth Paltrow

Keifer Sutherland

It’s no secret that Gwyneth “GOOP” Paltrow was born into Hollywood royalty with a silver spoon inserted in a very dark place. She never lets us forget how many famous and fabulous friends she has, how well she eats, how great her shoes are (some of her shoes are pretty amazing, I have to admit), and how generally better she is than all of us peasants. In case we forget, we can always literally sign up for the newsletter to read her smugness.

As it turns out, one of The Goop’s first famous connections came from her mother’s work in the annual Williamstown Theatre Festival. Her mother, Blythe Danner, hired a son of another famous actor to babysit The Goop. The actor? Donald Sutherland. The son? Keifer Sutherland. Keifer used to babysit The Goop. My head just exploded.

Kiefer Sutherland has admitted he struggles to believe that Gwyneth Paltrow is the same girl he used to babysit when she was young.

Speaking on the red carpet at the premiere of Monsters Vs Aliens, the 24 star spoke about the times he looked after Gwyneth when he worked with her mother.

He said: “I was working in a theatre with her mother in Williamstown Massachusetts, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and I believe on a couple of occasions I was asked to look after her for an hour or two. I think it was very funny because it’s unbelievable how fast someone goes from 13 to 18 and obviously they look so different that when Gwyneth started to work I thought ‘Well that must be another girl because I always remember her as being 11 or 12 years old.’”

Aw, that’s a cute story. Even though I think Keifer is probably a pretty screwed up guy, he’s a wonderful actor and his babysitting efforts towards The Goop are better than she deserved. I have to admit, whenever I see Keifer these days, I only see his dad. Their resemblance is so striking, I always do a double-take to make sure I’m actually looking at Keifer.

His name is Kiefer not Keifer. But poor him, did he have to babysit as a punishment?

Ok-here’s my secret celebrity confession: I dated Kiefer when I was 19. He thought I was 21…or well he pretended he thought that. We dated for a WHOLE month. He was a great, yet severely alcoholic, guy. Took me horse back riding and sent me flowers-then dumped me and broke my heart. I met him when he was taking a break from movies and on the USA Roping Team with his stunt double from The Cowboy Way. My mom’s best friend worked for the team. I was working for a deli and everyone nearly shit thier pants when he called me and then came and picked me up for a date. It was great!
Ok-that’s it people, back to our normally scheduled program….

Most people say he looks like Donald because many people aren’t familiar with his mother Shirley Douglas the theatre actress. The older Keifer gets, the stronger the resemblance with his mom.

Isn’t it funny how a parent and offspring can inspire such varied reactions in a person? Donald Sutherland is one of my favourites – all I want to do is snuggle with him on a couch and have him read to me, even when he’s playing a villain. However, when Keifer pops up, all I want to do is punch him in his nonexistent upper lip.

Yeah-good memories! Of course that was 1994. He was considered washed up at that time-things change quickly! But he was still broken up about his ex who dumped him at the alter for his best friend! You know who she is! He’d be drinking Jack Daniels straight with a Coke back by noon. Not good. But he was a good kisser!
    Ok-back to 2009…

Eileen, you’re my HERO, baby! So sad to hear about the alcohol though. He’s really talented and even though as Ling says (too funny) he has no upper lip, I still think he’s hot!

ok, weird story, but not NEARLY as cool as Eileen’s…

I was once on a small plane (like ten passenger puddle jumper) going from Portland to Seatle, and I was totally FREAKED (had some not-so-good experiences while flying) and Donald effing Sutherland was on the plane in the aisle across from me (I didn’t realize at the time) and I was, embarrassing as it is to say, practically hyperventillating and had my eyes squeezed shut because we hit some wicked turbulence and he unbuckled, and came and sat next to me and, I kid you not, held my sweaty hand. He didn’t say a word, he just held my hand.
He was so amazing and quiet about it and not at all creepy (I was in my late teens, so that would have been beyond disturbing. *Sigh*

It always makes me smile to see him playing the villian. He’s a damn good actor.

What a great story, Zoe. I’ve always adored both father and son. They both have those lovely sexy voices, and Kiefer has always had such a virile energy, while Donald always seemed very kind, as Zoe’s anecdote indicates. Loved your recollections too, Eileen.

Also? Brings a whole new meaning to wanting to screw your babysitter. Yum. He would have been a great babysitter for me: I would have sat perfectly still and just stared at him all night.

Zoe: that’s awesome! I love Donald Sutherland!! While I was dating Kiefer, I actually went to see The Puppet Masters with my friends and met up with him that night. I was giving him crap about how could his dad, who was so awesome, be in such a bad movie. He thought that was hilarious and kept saying it couldn’t be THAT bad! It was.
