Lupita Nyong’o covers Lucky, wasn’t allowed to wear makeup as a teenager

I’ve been missing Lupita Nyong’o something fierce this awards season. She’s been around, of course, because she presented at the SAGs and the Globes, and she’ll be a presenter at the Oscars too. But I think I’m missing Lupita so much because all of the younger starlets and would-be Fashion Girls are not bringing it this awards season. Keira Knightley’s pregnancy stole her style mojo. Felicity Jones is kind of boring. Marion Cotillard wears too much bad Dior. So, we need more Lupita in our lives. And here she is! She covers the March issue of Lucky Magazine and I love the cover and the inside shot (at the end of the post). She just looks so pretty and fresh and joyful. Lupita is like a breath of fresh air, isn’t she? Some highlights from the interview:

The negative part of fame: “The not-so-fun part of all this is that when I don’t feel like being famous, I still am. When you’re in the middle of Manhattan and you have to pop into Starbucks to use the restroom and everyone recognizes you when you’re waiting in line, it’s awkward.”

She wasn’t allowed to wear makeup as a teenager: “My mother has never ever worn a drop of makeup in her life, not even at a wedding. Honestly, my mother’s outlook was hard for me to take when I was a teenager and wanted to experiment. But in the end I appreciated it, because today I can look in a mirror with no makeup on and love myself.”

Her social media presence: “I’m governed by things that made me smile, laugh and think. And if they do that to me, then I ask myself, would anybody else care to see this? If I can think of one person, I post it.”

[From E! News]

Regarding the makeup situation… the thing about it is, Lupita doesn’t need makeup. I doubt her mom needs it either. No one really NEEDS it, but you know what I’m saying? Lupita doesn’t look any different when she spends an hour getting made up versus zero minutes getting made up. She has beautiful skin and a gorgeous face. The only thing that makeup gives her is an opportunity to match her eye shadow to her dress, and I’m actually sort of tired of that look!

    Lovely, as usual.

I really like these photos. The yellow and blue dress looks so amazing on her!

She is just radiant. Her smile beams with joy.

  2. Liz says:

She looks very pretty in both pictures but not a very interesting interview.

      +1

I’ve realized that in terms of interviews, she’s just not that interesting. Maybe it’s because the interview itself limits what she can/wants to talk about. She’s interesting as a fashion girl mainly.

The eyeshadow matching makes much more sense now that we know she didn’t wear makeup as a teenager. I feel like matching your shadow to your clothes was a rite of passage as an awkward 15 year old.

And I know she’s going to be in “Star Wars,” but does she have anything else coming up?? I really hope her career can have real longevity. She is amazing.

    Loving her hair lately.

She is so beautiful. Her, Emma Stone and Keira Knightley are probably the most beautiful young actresses around. And she’s so talented. But there is just something about her I don’t like. She struck me as stuck up in the last Baftas and I jus can’t warm up to her. Plus the few problematic things she said didn’t make it better.

    • Allie says:

There’s something I don’t like about her either. She does seem stuck up to me, and in sure last season didn’t help with her ego.

That said, her skin is so damn beautiful I wouldn’t wear any makeup either. My skin is the complete opposite. I’m so pasty and you can see any blemish and dry area on my face. So jealous.

    • SpookySpooks says:

      I don’t like her either.

    • Kim1 says:

That’s funny I don’t think she is stuck up.She seems very humble and grateful to me.I also don’t think she is a stunning beauty. She does have flawless skin.

    Gorgeous face and hair

  8. jenny says:

I am so nauseated with her. Yeah she’s a fashion girl, so gorgeous and all. But it’s not like I’ve seen her in another work since 12YS.

  9. Aww says:

Whom I’d really like to see on the cover of a fashion mag is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: her interview would probably be interesting AND she has fierce style. Enough of the actresses, give us women who are successful in different fields!

  10. Tiffany27 says:

She is so stunning. I can’t.

  11. scout says:

She is a natural beauty, don’t need to add anything more to mess it up.

  12. OhDear says:

I need to know her skin care routine.

  13. AlmondJoy says:

She looks beautiful! However, I find it interesting that her confidence and pride in herself causes many to see her as stuck-up. Not understanding that at all.

    • Hannah says:

      I think in general, you can’t win as a woman. If you’re confident, you’re arrogant, if you’re insecure, you’re annoying. If you’re a little assertive, you’re just a b*tch.

    • SpookySpooks says:

There are many young women who have confidence, yet they don’t strike me as stuck up. Emma Stone, Keira, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Felicity Jones, Taylor, even JLaw. Lupita does.

    • oneshot says:

@SpookySpooks – still not seeing where you get the ‘stuck-up’ impression from. She comes off as very poised and gracious, almost old-world in a way, which is very different from today’s trend of “relatable” stars whose schtick is “I eat pizza and cupcakes! I’m so normal!”.

But I agree with AlmondJoy, she can’t win on this site since no woman can.

      • SpookySpooks says:

I think women like Felicity or Gugu also appear gracious rather than “I eat pizza and cupcakes”.
She simply comes of as stuck up to ME. Jesus, not everyone has to like her.
