Michael Phelps apologizes to America for smoking the bong

Olympic champion Michael Phelps wants everyone to know that he’s sorry for the pot-smoking pictures, and for pot-smoking in general. The swimmer sat down with Today’s Matt Lauer, in an interview that was shown Friday morning, to discuss Phelps’ acknowledgment that he had “bad judgment” and that he “hurt a lot of people”.

Okay, I totally realize that some people were offended by the Olympic God’s mortal pot-smoking, but seriously, it’s not like he beat up old people while wigged out on smack. He smoked a bong, for the love of God. The worst thing that happened was the munchies. Let him smoke! OK! has more from the interview:

Michael Phelps is speaking up about that infamous photo of him “allegedly” smoking marijuana.

In an interview with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer airing March 13 and March 15, Phelps admits that what he did was “bad judgement” and “a mistake.”

“It was– really, you know, the people I hurt, you know, is my family, clearly. My friends,” he says. “The close people around me. And most importantly, the fans. And– and, you know, I realize that that hurt a lot of people.”

When asked to recall the events leading up to the photo being taken Phelps says, “I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. And– you know, there was probably two or three people there I didn’t know. It was a very small group. Six or seven people probably total in the whole house. Like nothing major. You know, not like a giant college house party. It was nothing like that. It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating.”

Phelps says he found out about the photo around the same time that the rest of America did. But he explains that while he knows he made a mistake, it wasn’t the handful of lost endorsements that first caused him the biggest worry.

“It’s not about money to me. So, you know, the– the contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed,” he says. “But, you know, I think the biggest thing is– is who I hurt the most. Like, if I lost money, okay. It’s not an issue with me.”

In the age of camera phones and the readily accessible internet, did Michael ever think that maybe someone at the party might snap a picture and take advantage of the situation?

“I trusted my friends who were there about who they were,” he says. “And clearly they weren’t trusted people… Sometimes you learn the hard way.”

From OK! Magazine

The quote “Like, if I lost money, okay. It’s not an issue with me” has earned Phelps my eternal respect. It’s like he said, “Hey, Kellogs, you want to fire me? Whatever, kids still want to be me. Don’t bogart the blunt, dude.”

I really believe that the true villains are the people who took the pictures and released them. Can’t we live in a society where the biggest Olympian in the world can chill out for a few days without his every move and mistake being documented? And here’s another point: the people who took the pictures and released them were most likely right there smokin’ the bong too. They are nobody’s heroes.

DD: I think he kind of HAD to, and most people realize that it’s a PR thing and weren’t offended in the first place. Kaiser, I totally agree: whoever the douche is that released those photos, karma is a b***h.

MP had to apologize in order to move forward. It’s lame and I fully believe he should be able to smoke all the sticky icky his heart desires.
If he wants to compete in the future and not have this weigh over his head, he had to make amends.

If anything came out of this, it’s just further proof that we need to legalize it and tax it. At least we got the world talking about our ridiculous drug policies!

His last quote in the article pretty much sums it up; sometimes you learn the hard way. Sure he may not feel being a celebrity and smoking pot isn’t a big deal, but it is a big deal to corporate sponsors and to the parents of the kids who look up to him. When you become famous, it is just a whole different ballgame of what’s acceptable to you and what’s acceptable to the public and the people who shell out endorsement money to you.

If he didn’t know this before, he definitely knows it now … the hard way. Its almost like having golden handcuffs.

He’ll survive though. People will move on to something else because unfortunately there is always be some celebrity making news due to thinking they are above it all. And we will be around to snark on them. I like that arrangement. 😉

all this guy’s life…he has trained and and walked the walk…schedules, workouts, regiments…for what? For the USA…we got GOLD! He’s young…young people can do wild things. Frankly he should of just said:
Look I won GOLD for my country, get out of my life- in order to do that I sacrificed for you….so what… i tried a little pot? I got wild one nite, I let it all hang out!”
    What college student hasn’t?!
Very few indeed- call it Reality 101.

Poor kid. You would think he was Chris Brown or something. He didn’t hurt anyone.

  7. L says:

Seriously. He had to say he was sorry for this? Our current and last president both are known to have used illegal drugs (and more than a simple hit off the bong) and also to have abused alcohol in their younger days, and even so they were voted president by the American public. It’s not fair to Phelps that he is held to this ridiculous standard because he was famous when this happened. It would be different if he was flaunting it. Public apologies for this? And it is still in the news? He is still having to give interviews to explain himself? This society is so screwed up. Like the author of the post points out, the real demon here is the photographer and/or whoever distributed the photo.

    I won’t Bogart and I won’t take or sell your pic’s. Pop a squat

  9. michellle says:

Too bad he doesn’t use that well earned celebrity & become an advocate for the legalization of herb.

  10. cakes says:

That’s funny. The next time someone says “pot smoking gets you no where” I hope someone stands up and says “it made Michael Phelps an 8 time gold medal olympian.” just sayin

  11. cakes says:

Besides its not like he was teaching kids how to shoot up on the Disney channel.

  12. Amy says:

Christ on a bike, the kid smoked a little weed at a party! He didn’t have a needle in his arm or an under-aged girl on his lap!

So silly he has to go around and apologize for a breach of HIS privacy. Yes, I realize marijuana is illegal, but it really shouldn’t be. I don’t even smoke, so this isn’t coming from some deluded pothead.

  13. Judy says:

Someone set him up ..so he smoked a little pot. Big damn deal. I dont smoke the crap and never have but from I understand it is no big deal. Maybe if they made it legal and taxed it and for sure give it to people with cancer we wouldnt be having all this illegal crap on the streets and there would be less pushers.
He is a kid. he may be a star but he is still a a kid and kids smoke pot if they can.

  14. Hieronymus Grex says:

    no apology needed.

  15. Jill says:

i think it is great that he seems to at least realize that he is a role model though. too many celebs seem whiny about having to be one, but he’s taking responsibility. now, go, michael, have fun and don’t let anyone else take your picture! =)

  16. Mark says:

…wishes he had used his one-hitter.
