Kit Harington: ‘I’ve decided I’m going to be a good little hunk & shut up’

FFN_Harrington_Kit_GGFF_040815_51704461

Last week, Kit Harington gave an interview to Page Six which proved that much like his Game of Thrones character, Kit Harington Knows Nothing. Kit was discussing how he’s viewed as some kind of cute guy or heartthrob and instead of just wearing his cuteness lightly, with humor (after all, Kit is never going to light the world on fire with his acting talent), Kit decided to get sort of pissy about the whole thing:

“To always be put on a pedestal as a hunk is slightly demeaning. It really is and it’s in the same way as it is for women. When an actor is seen only for her physical beauty, it can be quite offensive. Well, it’s not just men that can be inappropriate sexually; women can be as well. I’m in a successful TV show in a kind of leading man way and it can sometimes feel like your art is being put to one side for your sex appeal. And I don’t like that. In this position you get asked a lot, ‘Do you like being a heartthrob? Do you like being a hunk?’ Well, my answer is, ‘That’s not what I got into it for.”

[From Previous CB story]

Many of us chuckled and some people even defended him. But for the most part, I think Kit needs to lighten up a bit about his image and celebrity. Looks like Kit got that message too – he sat down yesterday for an interview on Good Morning America, and he was asked about his “being a hunk is demeaning” statement – go here to see the video. Kit said:

“I’ve kind of decided I’m going to be a good little hunk and shut up…Yeah, I did get into trouble for that. It’s one of those–you say something and then didn’t realize people would jump on it.”

[From ABC News]

It doesn’t surprise me that he didn’t realize that his words had consequences. And that was one of the weird parts of his first statement – he acted like people were objectifying him at, like, Brad Pitt levels. Kit’s a cute guy on a hit TV show, and he only really makes news when he says something dumb. I guess he learned that lesson a little late.

Kit also told GMA that he’s starting to watch the show as a fan now, and he doesn’t want to know in advance what happens in other characters’ storylines. That’s a good way to approach it. I wish I could hang out with some of those actors and do a marathon of the past season. GAH. I can’t wait for Sunday.

      All the mimosas for Mimif.

This guy has a really distorted self-perception.

      • Anne says:

I don’t know, I’m inclined to think he just had people around him – maybe publicists, or agents, who made comments that MADE him feel that way. It’s possible. Maybe he had creative ambitions or ideas that were voiced down. Who knows? Unless it proves to be a pattern, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

    • mimif says:

Aw, I actually like Kit and Kit as Jon Snow, I was just being my usual jackass self.
QQ showed this to me the other day, a must for all GOT fans. (Sorry taterthot & Kitten).

Trigger warning mimif: A male with an opinion:

Why do people on this site love to rip on men for stuff they can’t help like being short but when someone makes fun of actress for being fat, people will be outraged? You know you can exercise and eat right to keep your weight down but you can’t help out tall you are?

Waiting for: Male tears, MRA responses and unfunny comebacks

Sorry for pointing out hypocrisy, you shouldn’t ‘height shame’ people.

      • mimif says:

I never said he was short, I said he was little. You know, like dainty. Teeny tiny. Itty bitty, catch my drift?
Also, will you marry me? Because I love you even when you’re being ridiculous, which is 99.9% of the time.

      • taterho says:

        She’s an eyebrow shamer too.

FTR, he referred to himself as “little”, Mark.

You’re always so offended by everyone and everything on this site, yet you’re always here, commenting.
        Explain please.

I was going to tell you that you were a hunk, but now I’m thinking better of it.

ETA: mimif is only about 3 inches high. Something about a waffling incident.

      • Kitten says:

^ Unfunny comebacks, just as Mark predicted.

        *They definitely drugged this cat.

Mark, I’m totally shipping you and mimif. She needs you to keep her in line. She’s a kale-eating, commercial-salmon-fishing, sake-drinking, crazy-assed lady in need of a BIG man. Do something good for humanity and help her, will you? There’s waffles in the deal.

      • mytbean says:

        mark –

Consider though, that the ferocity is mainly reserved for those who ask for it – the douches and the narcissists that put themselves out there like they’re a gift to the world. Ego is like blood in the water here. Or those who are just voluntarily stupid or drowning deep in self denial.

Celebitchy is that friend that will not let you lie to yourself or let your head get so big that you fall over. A person can be short, tall, fat, skinny – but as soon as they start that mess, cue the Jaws Theme.

      • mimif says:

So many lolz taterthot. And Kitten, pretty purrease put your kitties on IG!

      • MtnRunner says:

mimif, you’re too much woman for Mark.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

For one thing, Mark, he’s self-identifying as a hunk. Hunks aren’t short. And petit. With pouty little faces. I have a feeling a woman who described herself as a “babe” or whatever the current terminology is, when she wasn’t one, would be just as ripped apart, whether she could “help it” or not. HE’s the one crying about how we all see him as this paragon of masculinity. But we don’t. So it leaves him open to snorts and derision.
I usually don’t answer you because I just want you to go away, but you seemed to honestly want to know, so…

        Just saw the responses now.

I didn’t response because I already predicted what you’d do band together and make terrible jokes by way of ignoring my questions to you

@TOK Why can’t I come here to complain the whole point of the site is to bitch right? Why can’t I you all spend your days trashing people you’ve never met or spoken, why I can’t I voice an opinion of my own? But you’re not reasonable obviously you’re an anonymous commenter on the internet

    • MtnRunner says:

      He’s precious.

      • mimif says:

Took the words right out of my gob. 😉

        Hehe…gob almost rhymes with blog…hehehe.

      • MtnRunner says:

        mimif, yes, you did… apparently.

It’s never final until it’s posted!

taterho, we are family, I got all my sistahs and me! This thread is tame compared to what gets written on the Hiddles posts. He and I are having a super, secret torrid love affair y’know and I like to overshare.

Don’t mention it to lilacflowers tho’, she’s rather sensitive about huz #2.

      • taterho says:

Eh don’t sweat it Mtn…I been involved in some raunchy threads…kiddo called me a couch fu**er once.
I just wanted to say gob.
        Gob
        teehee
        Annnnnd I’m totally telling lilacflowers.

      • MtnRunner says:

taters — if you’re a couch fu**er, you are my SOUL SISTER. So.Many.Options.

lilac knows about me, I just try not to rub it in since Tom started telling her details about our dalliances. As a long distance runner, I have stamina FOR DAYS.

  2. stormyshay says:

I like him on GOT. But I have never understood people trying to sell him like he is a sex symbol. I do not find him attractive at all.

    • lem says:

he basically looks like he’s about to cry all the time. everyone i know who has read the books said he was like some sort of alpha male and then on the show i just want to tell him not to cry.

    • Franca says:

when I read the books I imagined Jon as really tall, skinny, with sharper features. Kit doesn’t look like that at all. And his acting is pretty bad too.

      • fritanga says:

Thank you. Harrington is a terrible actor, clearly the one big glaring casting mistake ever made on GoT. The rest of the cast is impeccable, but this lox is who they chose to play the pivotal role of Jon Snow when there are legions of much better actors in the UK? The show actually grinds to a halt whenever he’s onscreen. And as you said, he doesn’t even come close physically to the character in the books.

And it’s obvious he thinks very highly of himself – has any other GoT actor referred to himself as a “hunk?” It’s my theory that the reason he’s on the show is that he’s “important” to someone fairly high up in the GoT/HBO PTB. There’s no other explanation. He has no talent.

      • mom2two says:

Same here. Oddly enough, I think Harry Lloyd (who played Viserys in the first season) fits the description of Jon Snow better than Harington does. And Harry Lloyd is a MUCH better actor too.
Kit seems like a pleasant enough guy but he is not a good actor.
@fritanga, it boggles my mind too. I do know that Alfie Allen (Theon). Joe Dempsey (Gendry) and Iwan Rheon (Ramsey) all tried out for Jon Snow. All three would have been an upgrade in the role. The producers said that Iwan Rheon was their second choice after Harington.

      • Franca says:

I’m glad Alfie and Iwan didn’t get the role because they are amazing as the characters they play.

Kit, Emilia and Sophie are by far the worst actors. They should have cast better actors in such huge roles.

  3. Esteph says:

I’m not sure if I want him to shut up. Keep talking Kit!

    • bettyrose says:

I know. Even his dumb comments are adorable. I don’t consider him a “hunk,” but hunk isn’t my thing. Dark adorable and brooding are what weakens my knees. Hey Kit(ty kitty kitty). Keep talking!

  4. The Original G says:

    Exactly Kit.

It’s a hard lesson for celebs to learn that even though they are real people with real thoughts, feelings and problems, no one want to hear about them.

  5. Christo says:

Wow, somebody had his coffee and woke up on the right side of the bed this morning—and with the perfect hair to boot. I actually see a smile and some expressive…dare I say….happy eyes.

  6. Abbott says:

Is his fly open? Anyone want to volunteer to zoom in and check?

  7. Brittaki says:

I’m glad his PR person scolded him for that statement. Arrogance can kill a career real fast. See: Justin Bieber.

  8. Dubois says:

I’m going to try and hold out. I hate watching shows week-to-week. I have HBOGo and will hold out for 5 weeks so that I can binge then hold out for another 5 weeks!!! It’s going to be so hard not to watch though.

  9. zappy says:

I dont see the appeal. he looks like about to cry and sad..

  10. Mike says:

Aaahhh to be this self-confident… Love it. Now we are to pretend he is some Paul Newman 2015 edition? Ok…

Does he own a mirror? He is a budget version of Orlando Bloom who is already the budget version of himself.

How is he attractive? I really can’t see it.

  11. Lilacflowers says:

That bottom picture, is that a smile?

  12. meme says:

whatever so long as you stop whining.

  13. Kimberly says:

He needs to have all the seats. There are a lot of people who have not even seen Game of Thrones, and have no idea who Kit Harrington even is (I’ve been calling him Jon Snow until recently), let alone would think he is some sexy beast to objectify. No dude. Just no.

  14. InvaderTak says:

And yet, you still sound clueless. I see that cologne ad he’s in at work everyday and it cracks me up. Can’t remember what brand it is, but he looks so overwhelmed at having the model’s leg anywhere near him it makes me smile.
Edit: It’s man by Jimmy Choo.

  15. Kim says:

Not surprised that he retracted. I am, however, surprised that he’s started watching the show. Isn’t it a thing for actors not to watch their own shows? If I acted, I don’t think I’d be able to watch my show. I’d constantly be critiquing my performance (even if it were a show with an ensemble cast).

  16. Jag says:

To me, he’s one of those actors who looks better – and I like better – on film or television than in “real life.” Whichever fan told him that she was putting him on a pedestal needs to shut up. His arrogance has completely turned me off from him.

  17. frisbeejada says:

Two words. Aidan. Turner. No three words. Aidan. Turner. Mine. I have nothing else to say.

  18. KB says:

He was SO funny on Seth Meyers. The skit was hilarious and his segment was too. I don’t get why people were so hard on him for his Page Six comments. Some of the same people that supported the #AskHerMore movement too, I’m sure.

  19. original kay says:

I much prefer his interviews, opposed to the girl who plays Arya.
I like he ‘fessed up and admitted it was a dumb remark to make.

  20. M.A.F. says:

Now if only others would follow his example and hush up. Looking forward to Sunday.

  21. Argirl says:

He’s not cute enough for that attitude.

  22. ‘Little hunk’ =oxymoron have a seat, Kit..

  23. jammypants says:

He’s cute. And young. Sometimes says dumb things. That’s all I got.

  24. tyson says:

The hypocrisy of feminists is laughable and exasperating at the same time. Hundreds of actresses have said the same thing and women crawl out of the woodwork to say, “yeah! damn right! you tell them!” but when a man says it those same feminists make fun of him. The hyper-PC world we live in is ruining America. Ok, i’m going to stop shaking my fist in the air now.

  25. krtmom says:

    He’s hot!

  26. Tig says:

Still being pissy I see. Of course, “tone” is everything in a comment like this, but still seems a bit miffed that his prior comments were laughed at. I have yet to have coffee, but the comments up thread to Mark’s comments were hysterical. Happy weekend to all.
