Charlize Theron on Sean Penn: ‘I’m a very, very, very lucky girl. He’s hot.’

charlize esquire

Real question: why did Esquire’s Photoshop Wizards go crazy on Charlize Theron’s cleavage on this cover? Charlize is not crazy-busty or anything, but she’s got more than this. They actually put in effort to make Charlize look really flat. That whole chest area just looks like a cartoon. Anyway, Charlize covers the May issue of Esquire because she’s promoting Mad Max: Fury Road, which looks really and truly bonkers. In the interview, Charlize talks about her reported on-set fights with Tom Hardy and how much she adores Sean Penn.

On her on-set fights with Tom Hardy: “We f–kin’ went at it, yeah. And on other days, he and George [Miller, the director] went at it. It was the isolation, and the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot. We shot a war movie on a moving truck — there’s very little green screen. It was like a family road trip that just never went anywhere. We never got anywhere. We just drove. We drove into nothingness, and that was maddening sometimes. It’s material that’s really frightening — we didn’t have a script. Tom and I are actors who take our jobs seriously. Both of us want to please the directors we work with, and when you don’t know if you can deliver on that, it’s a frightening place to be — and for Tom more than me, because he was stepping into big shoes.”

How her romance with Penn began: “We’ve been friends for twenty years. He was married, I was in a long-term relationship, our spouses—not regularly, but we were in each other’s lives. I think our friendship stemmed from mutual respect—more on my end, because I really didn’t have a body of work twenty years ago, but my love and passion for making films—that was our common ground. And also, Sean liked to have conversations outside of just making movies. That’s sometimes hard to find among friends here, and that’s where our friendship really blossomed.”

Friendship foundation: “It is nice to be in something where the friendship came first. I’ve never had that. There’s a weight to the relationship already that I don’t think you have when you just meet somebody and enter a relationship. There’s a foundation of 20 years that the two of us have shared with each other in all these different ways that is really the foundation of something that has brought a lot of beautiful things into my life. We get so stuck in wanting to predict the future that we forget the moment that we’re in. And the moment that we’re in is just really good.”

Life with Sean: “It’s really good, really nice. The marriage thing is always so strange to me anyway. I love the possibility of anything, but I’m really enjoying myself and the everyday moment and how that coincides with my son and my life and my friends. I’m a very, very, very lucky girl. Very lucky. He’s hot. He is hot. How do you say that in an interview? You’re a forty-year-old woman sounding like a sixteen-year-old. There’s something beautiful about that, but you lack the articulation of really saying what it’s like when somebody walks into your life and makes you see something that you really never thought you’d be able to see. If somebody had said to me, ‘This is what it will be,’ I would’ve said, ‘F— off.’ As you can see, it makes me smile.”

[From Yahoo & Us Weekly]

She says that at the end of the day, she respected Tom Hardy’s process because he didn’t “fake-smile” and go through the motions. She also says that Tom left her a gift in her trailer – a self-portrait he made with a red handprint on the back. This was what he wrote to her: “You are an absolute nightmare, BUT you are also f–king awesome. I’ll kind of miss you. Love, Tommy.” I feel like that’s probably high praise from Hardy.

As for the Penn stuff… I like it their relationship more when she’s describing it because it sounds real. When Sean talks about Charlize, it feels more like his midlife crisis or an attempt to one-up Robin Wright. Charlize also complimented Sean because he’s “not that guy” to think that he understands what happens in the world just because he watches CNN.

*shivers* Burnt bacon is hot too!

  2. Lara says:

Can I tell my Tom Hardy story here?? I’m gonna anyways. I’m walking down the street and see a hot guy so I text my friend about it. As I’m not paying attention to where I’m going I walk into said hot guy and fall over. He very nicely picks me up and asks if I’m ok. It was Tom Hardy. I ran in embarrassment.

  3. Maya says:

Love truly is blind for the only thing I see in Sean is that he is a gifted actor but looks like a man who has been on drugs for decades.

What happened to the Charlize who vehemently said that she would never discuss her personal live and especially her relationships? Now here she is talking about Sean a lot and Infact even subtle hinting a marriage.

    • Lee says:

      + 1

Love how more and more celebs are forgetting their former desire for privacy nowadays…so convenient and consistent.

    • Kiddo says:

I was getting a preliminary DX of Jada-Pinkett-Smith-itis.

    • Esmom says:

I think she’s pulling out all the stops to promote her movie, with nothing off limits.

Side note, she looks so different on the Esquire cover, I thought it was Maggie Grace at first.

    • KellyBee says:

      This +100000

So she doesn’t feel “rape” while talking about Pen in this interview?

    • FLORC says:

I’ve always given a side eye to those who gush too much about their relationships. Like their actions can’t speak for themselves.

To everything else. Good for her. She thinks he’s hot.

    • Nancy says:

And she’s all over the place. They had a “mutual respect,” but mostly on her part.

She talked to him about films, but he liked her because he liked to talk about stuff other than movies.

He walked into her life and made her see something she never thought she would be able to see but she’s known him for 20 years.

She needed a better editor. And a therapist, while we’re at it. Because anyone who dates a man with a very well known history of woman abuse isn’t emotionally healthy, no matter how much lipstick she tries to put on that pig.

  4. Jessica says:

Can I admit something? I find Sean Penn really hot in a lot of his film roles. Off-screen, no way, but on-screen there’s something about him.

    • xpreson says:

I found him hot in his younger years… not now though.

    • epiphany says:

Penn is a brilliant actor – maybe the best of his generation, apart from Gary Oldman. All that talent can make seem attractive when he’s acting. In real life, he just looks like he smells like a combination of dirty ashtray and sweaty, rented tuxedo.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I agree. He’s not conventionally handsome but very charismatic and a great actor. I can see why Charlize is into him!

    • Tara says:

I think he was hot until recently when he started looking orange and wrinkly.

  5. ANNE says:

People forget that Stuart Townsend isn’t really a heartthrob either. Obviously, she isn’t into metrosexuals.

  6. NewWester says:

Call me cynical, but didn’t Robin Wright just do a magazine interview where she talked in glowing terms about her relationship? Hmmmm

    • Tara says:

And Sean did an interview before her praising Charlize. I think they are all happy in their current relationships.

  7. alice says:

Robin told Vanity Fair that she’s never come so much in her life (with Ben Foster.) And now this… OY

    • truthSF says:

“…that she’s never (come) so much in her life…

Please tell me it’s not what I think it means?

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

      Classy.

    • FingerBinger says:

Still gross. She’s also never read more apparently.

      • santana says:

well, that’s probably true too, since she raised her kids alone, as Dylan Penn said in an interview with Vogue Italy. No6 too much time to read when you’re doing all the work without 24/7 nannies and your husband is whoring around

      • FingerBinger says:

So when Hopper used the n word it was Robin who taught him that? Since she raised the kids alone. Got it.

      • FLORC says:

        FingerBinger
        You know better.
Penn has used that word and its not like he wasn’t in the kids lives at all during their waking hours. You can raise kids alone, but still the other parents leave an impact.

      • FingerBinger says:

So she Robin didn’t raise them alone?

      • santana says:

that’s a very simple mind you have. She raised alone. The kids themselves are saying it and Penn himself admitted he wasn’t a very present. Of course that the kid, being a boy, will try to imitate his father when finally spending time with him just because he was forced to by the divorce. The kid said the n word when he was with his father, I highly doubt he would dare to do it while with his mother. He looked angry and raging when it happened: just like his father. Just seen recent pics of Hopper with his mother and he’s smiling and relaxed, hugging her in spite of the paps shooting.

    • Tara says:

I thought that was classless of her actually. TMI.

  8. Kaya says:

He’s a wife beater. Not even at normal levels of horrible, but tie-her-to-a-chair-and-beat-the-living-crap-out-of-her horrible.

    I don’t get it. I just don’t.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Right. But she has “admired him for decades.” ???

      • FLORC says:

        GNAT
I can only compare to when I dated a school yard crush. 3rd grade to 6th grade he was it for me. We met up as adults and dated for a summer. His looks didn’t really hold up, but was ok. It lasted a few months, but found I only did it to see how it would go. The image I created had to be tested. It didn’t hold up, but no regrets over it.

I wonder if Charlene did that. She built an image of this man and in doing so has ignored the faults. Sometimes it’s all about the image we’re attracted to and not the actual person. Good, bad, all of it.

    • Kara says:

considering her own family history it certainly gives up dangerous vibes.

      • Caz says:

Same here. I’m surprised she is with him, given both their different histories with violence.

  9. JJ McLay says:

Whenever I hear the name “Sean Penn”, all I can think of is that awful story of what he did to Madonna during their relationship. (Broke in to her house, tied her up, left her alone in the house, forced her to do ‘degrading sex acts’ etc.) He sounds like an abusive twat to me…

  10. **sighs** says:

He is a completely not hot abuser tool.

  11. Pip says:

Yeah I used to love Charlize but honestly after hearing all this glowing about the disgusting POS we know Penn to be it’s making me side-eye the crap out of her.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Yeah, suddenly I’m wondering if Charlize has been overindulging in the wacky weed.

      • Vampi says:

Nah…weed people like CALM. No hyper shennagians. Peen (typo but it stays!) is an abuser, and azz, and a lowlife. She will soon see who he “really” is. I feel bad for her son.

    • Wolf says:

      Same here, exactly.

  12. Rhiley says:

To each his own. To me, Sean Penn looks like he would smell of BO, cigs, whiskey, and some kind of yucky meat. He also looks like he would hack the most disgusting, moist, slippery loogies each morning and have nothing but coffee and a few Camels for breakfast. In other words, he grosses me out.

  13. MrsBPitt says:

Sean Penn is a disgusting pig, that should have spent time in jail, after that Madonna incident…and God only knows what Robin Wright sufferred through the years. Plus, all the crap he talked about Robin in interviews, the mother of his kids! Kids that are way old enough to read that stuff. I have totallly lost all respect for CT…I always thought of her as a kick-ass, independent, woman. But, if she is with this tool, then she has problems….

Oh, and as for Sean being hot….if she means hot as in hot tempered, then yes….hot looking? She needs the name of a good optometrist!!!!

  14. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

For the sake of balance I’ll remind you that he’s done a lot of humanitarian work.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, he has, and that’s admirable. I just wish he would do one more thing – join up with an advocacy group for victims of domestic abuse, and say he was wrong to do what he did, and how he got his anger under control. Assuming he did.

    • FLORC says:

That doesn’t balance the scales. If any of his abusive actions continued you can’t play on both sides. You can’t advocate for abuse victims while later creating them. Tht doesn’t balance anything.
And his charity work displayed 2 traits that didn’t belong. Temper that wasn’t frustration related at tthe sad situations and tooting his own horn. He tended to speak more about himself and what he was doing than what needed to be done and how that should happen.

    • Jag says:

Allegedly raping, and then beating and torturing Madonna for hours trumps any kind of humanitarian work he could ever do, imo.

      • FLORC says:

        Jag
Even worse he didn’t reform his behavior after Madonna. His anger is still visible. His threats of harming others, his actual harming others, and his attitude towards it all like we should all forget about it says enough.

His behavior wasn’t a mistake of youth and alcohol. He’s proven that time and time again.

  15. Nicolette says:

She needs to have her eyes checked.

  16. Nikki says:

Well, I find him unattractive, but Rliey’s comments kind of top any of my sentiments! It is SUCH a contrast, though: Kelly Clarkson’s picture glowing with joy and positive energy, and Charlene’s so guarded. I worry about her in this relationship, because a leopard doesn’t change his spots.

  17. SamiHami says:

“Charlize also complimented Sean because he’s “not that guy” to think that he understands what happens in the world just because he watches CNN.”

BwaahahhhahhhhahhhHHhaaaa!!!!! But that is EXACTLY what he is!

    • Tara says:

She means he actually gets out there and goes to those places and does something about it. He actually does. People focus on who he was 30 years ago, but the person he is today has saved lives and walks the walk.

      • FLORC says:

He’s been physically violent towards women out of anger far more recent than 30 years ago. Far more.

      • santana says:

As far as December 2013 he was still smashing fans phones for taking a pic of him in a public place. He admitted he still keeps drinking heavily. The racist joke at the Oscars and the continuos badmouthing of the mother of his children doesn’t help either. He’s in his best behavior now, because if he loses Charlize he knows he will end like Charlie Sheen, but I don’t think he truly cares about her and her child. It’s more about him and his needs, like it has always been.

  18. serena says:

It’s really true the saying ‘love is blind’.. he’s hot just in your eyes Charlize (and very very few others).

  19. Gosh it must be at least a month since that Robin Wright Vanity Fair interview implying how disappointing Sean was in the sack . . . what took Theron so long?

  20. Lama Bean says:

I’ll say something nice here. I LOVE her hair on the cover.

    • Kitten says:

She looks f*cking amazing on the cover and her hair is on point!
      That’s all I got.

    • Maya says:

Charlize is one of the most stunning and talented actresses in Hollywood. But that’s all there is – her personality, her friendship with racist Chelsea Handler and get relationship with women beater Sean, shows her inner ugliness.

      • Tara says:

Inner ugliness. Do you know her? Chelsea Handler is no racist. She loves black men. She’s a comedian. Lighten up. She is also friends with half of Hollywood actresses, so you might as well judge nearly everyone,

      • Jag says:

@ Tara, she’s racist against other races, and being a comedian doesn’t excuse it.

      • Maya says:

@Tara: umm so she is not a racist because she sleeps with black men? Seriously using that?

That’s like saying “I am not a male chauvinist because I sleep with women”

Btw – I stopped watching Sandra Bullock, Charlize and Jane Fonda movies since I found out that they are friends with Chelsea. I will never support anyone who are friends with racists – end off.

    • Esmom says:

I love it, too, but I’m thinking it’s extensions. Didn’t she have a pixie like six months ago? Even if it was a year ago it wouldn’t grow out that much/that nicely by now.

      • evasmom says:

Ummm. She dated one and for the record just because you date outside your race you b can still be a racist. I know a few people who are married to and have children by AA and the things they have said about black people is atrocious. They think that their significant other is “different.” So please don’t be fooled.

  21. santana says:

The flat chest is the result of aggressive photoshop trying to ease the saggy boobs, just that they ended erasing it all. She lacks of body tone, no matter all that photo ops to the gym where she probably spends all the time ragging against the Tia Mowrys instead of actually working out.

    • applapoom says:

Trur, she has never been toned, simply long limbed. She does not look amazing in a bikini but she has the face of an angel. And she is and has always been rather small chested (see devil’s advocate).

      • FLORC says:

She has. She was a toned dancer before that hip injury.

Agree on the chest. She’s on the flat side. I think we see cutlets in the outfits, but the topless scenes prove it.
If anything in this cover there’s no added contouring to the chest and the lights are just hitting as they do to wash out imperfections.
There should be an edit. Her chest bare is realistic to this cover.

    • perplexed says:

I don’t get the Sean Penn stuff at all, but I think she has a good physique. I wouldn’t mind having one like hers.

  22. Tara says:

I like her honesty about the Tom Hardy thing. So many actors would be all fake about it. He does seem to respect her from what he said in an interview too. I think they are both intense people who clashed. Hardy admits he’s difficult and Charlize doesn’t take any crap. She’s a throwback to a time when leading ladies like Bette Davis and Ava Gardner were intimidating and told it like it was.

The Sean Penn stuff is just love talking. He was kind of hot until recently when he started looking orange and all the years of smoking and drinking caught up to him. I do think she is good for him. They say good friends make the best lovers. If he does something stupid to mess this up then he truly is a moron.

    • meme says:

Comparing her to the legends that are Davis and Gardner. I don’t think anyone is intimidated by Charlize.

      • Tara says:

Oh yes they are. So many have said it. Even Thor Chris Hemsworth said she is intimidating to him. She has such a strong presence when she walks in a room. She is a throwback to those old Hollywood actresses in beauty and presence. These days we expect stars to be all warm and fuzzy.

      • santana says:

Any presence she could have due mainly to her height, is overshadowed by the minute she opens her mouth. She always comes off as rather dumb and not really bright

      • Tara says:

She is known to be a very smart woman which also makes her intimidating. Great beauty, brains, strength, talent, and quick-witted. That’s a woman. Keep hating.

      • VirgiliaCoriolanus says:

I still remember how she was hanging off of Michael Fassbender’s jock. Uber embarrassing. I hope he let her down gently, because she hung on his every word like she wanted to f-ck him to the high heavens.

      • Tara says:

Can you blame her? I’ve seen him being flirty with her too. I think something did go down between those two during Prometheus. Although Charlize can’t be that way now because Sean seems like the jealous type.

  23. Ann says:

I always thought he was super unattractive when he was younger and even more so now. Never underestimate how low a woman’s self esteem can go.

  24. meme says:

Tom Hardy is awesome. The promo tour should be interesting since they can’t stand each other and have let everyone know it.

    • Tara says:

He’s an arrogant jerk though. It’s kind of annoying that these male actors get away with so much and people are hypercritical of actresses. If Charlize were saying the things Tom Hardy said in his Esquire interview people would rip her to shreds. Tom Hardy is so cool and edgy though.

  25. kri says:

    1) I would love to” go at it” with Tom Hardy. 2) Charlize is a damn fool.

  26. gilmore says:

Sean Penn hot? It’s okay girl, you’re in a safe place you don’t have to lie.

  27. Ellie says:

Yeah and her sons so lucky to have a mother who brings a vicious wife beater into his life…. I hope age has mellowed his temper and violent tendencies for the child’s sake because character doesn’t change unless people recognise their problems and actively change themselves. In recent interviews he ‘s blamed his abused ex wife for not loving him enough as a reason why he was not happy. No recognition that he was an abusive shit. When he decides Charlize doesn’t love him enough/gets sick of her, his true nature will emerge. At least she’s bigger than him.

    • santana says:

…and don’t forget Gerda. Bitch is there waiting and loaded.

    • Tara says:

There’s no evidence that Robin Wright was ever abused. Their daughter makes it seem like both Robin and Charlize shut Sean up.

I seriously doubt he is the exact same guy he was in the 1980s when he was married to Madonna and out of control. He’s saving lives, sleeping in tents in Haiti and doing more good for the world than these people who want to forever judge him for who he might have been 30 years ago.

      • siri says:

Right. And the kids love their father, and have constant contact with him. Even Madonna is on good terms with him now, having visited Sean’s project in Haiti with her son. If SHE can forgive him, and supports him, why do people still need to bring this up, and judge his new relationship by it? They seem happy with each other, and he definitely isn’t phony. In HW, that might be an exception.

  28. Kelly says:

I agree with her, they’re a cute couple

  29. Crumpet says:

Yeah, good luck with that wife beater, Charlize. I’m sorry for your son that you don’t have better sense.

  30. Vampi says:

Only read the headline and I can honestly say…… NO, he is NOT…and NO, you are not! *shudders at all the grossness*

  31. LaurieH says:

There are a litany of words I would use to describe Sean Penn. “Hot” is not one of them.

  32. RaRaRasputin says:

I just hope Charlize is okay. Given hers and his respective backgrounds, it sounds as though it could be a volatile mix. Charlize has always struck me as independent, confident and ‘no nonsense’ but it is often these types of personalities who are at heart the most insecure.

There also could be something of the psychological in her choice; Freud said that people often repeat their childhoods to gain mastery. Charlize had no control over her abusive father and no say in how that situation played out. Perhaps this is her attempt at mastering those emotions or reforming the bad boy to find some sort of conclusion?

All I wish for Charlize is that she went into this with her eyes open. I hope Stewart is keeping watch.

  33. Flower says:

He’ hot?….. so is just discarded cigarette butt.

  34. mootwo says:

weird, the area of her chest that’s exposed by the V of her top has been blurred.

  35. Angelalala says:

Grown women who call themselves “girl” (outside the arena of humor) make me throw up in my mouth a little.

  36. elle says:

I would not have recognized that as Charlize… even with her name emblazoned across it, I’m still not 100% sure that’s her.
