Here are some photos of Robert Downey Jr. and Jeremy Renner ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange yesterday. I’ve been somewhat surprised by how Marvel has been pairing up the Avengers for some of their promotional duties – I mean, Downey and Renner? Which forgoes the pairing people want: Downey and Mark Ruffalo. Instead, Ruffalo has mostly been paired with the ladies, Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen. It’s odd.
Anyway, it’s worth noting that RDJ hasn’t made any statements or apologies for walking out of an interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy last week OR the incident where RDJ seemed racist towards Alejandro Inarritu. I didn’t expect RDJ to say anything about the Guru-Murthy interview, but I’m shocked that someone hasn’t gently suggested to RDJ that he “clarify” his Inarritu statement.
Meanwhile, it kind of seems like the knives are out for RDJ. This was an item in this morning’s Page Six:
Robert Downey Jr. had security fit for a king for his family at ABC Kitchen Sunday afternoon. Witnesses tell us the “Iron Man” star took his father and other family members to lunch.
“The security operation to get him and his entourage to the restaurant was insane,” described a source, who said Downey sent two SUVs to pick up family members. Meanwhile, two bodyguards loaded Downey into an SUV at his hotel.
“You would’ve thought it was the president,” snipped our source. “His security blocked cars coming into the garage until Downey was in his car.”
The guards also stood watch in the restaurant throughout the three- hour meal. Despite the ring of steel, Downey did sign autographs on the way out.
Downey’s rep told us: “Robert had brunch on Sunday at his father’s favorite restaurant, ABC Kitchen. Security was invited to attend as guests, along with other family members and friends.”
Basically, RDJ had a lot of unnecessary security? RDJ is very security-minded, for what it’s worth. We may like to think that RDJ is super-accessible, but he basically lives in a fortified castle in LA and he’s always got a lot of security around him.

I tried to meet him at TIFF and he was a huge diva. He was only nice to fans for the cameras. Even Oprah was more accessible than he was. He’s not a nice guy at all and he’s very fake.
Got that vibe just from interviews, why I don’t like him.
I’m not saying he’s not a diva, but in a scenario like that where absolutely everyone wants a piece of him, saying hello to one person in an uncontrolled environment could be catastrophic/he could get totally swarmed. I would feel really freaked out surrounded by a mob who wanted to talk to me, it has to be be controlled once they get to his level. Totally not discounting that he’s maybe an a**, I do get that vibe, but I don’t judge actors for not acting like best buddies with the 9,000 people they meet a day or whatever.
He is an **s. Due to work I attend TIFF (and not only), including the parties. So many of them are so undeserving any attention, it’s heartbreaking. I sometimes wonder why it’s necessary to be a jerk or to become one when it’s not about PR and getting good publicity. Haven’t found the answer yet.
@Mary-Alice That sucks. I only worked retail dealing with famous types in NY, so usually people were cool, but heard nightmare stories from waitress friends. They are only human, so of course not everyone is going to be a nice person, but you would think having so much would make them less inclined to be miserable prats somehow! RDJ clearly had major demons to have ended up rock bottom from drugs, some people are just nasty whether they are recovered addicts or not. Most male actors are pretty freaking fragile and egotistical in my own experience, he seems to fit the bill.

After the Sandra Bullock incident, I no longer criticize celebrities for having security around for themselves and their family. There are a lot of crazies out there.

Absolutely and sometimes you don’t know what crazies are doing to them until they are arrested. Kevin Spacey’s stalker didn’t make the news until she was imprisoned for threatening to torture, castrate and blow him up. He had added security from the threats till the imprisonment. Maybe RDJ has had threats. 2 security guards and drivers to pick up his family so they didn’t need to drive, hardly overkill
Totally agree – we have no idea what kind of threats he is dealing with on a daily basis. Better safe than sorry.

Talented actor who basically plays himself in his most famous role went and turned Mr. Hollywood. I bet he has his Birdman moment as soon as his part in the franchise is over.

Maybe that’s why he’s so (in)sensitive about Inarritu… the man’s movie struck a chord with him, like a crystal ball glimpse at his future.
I wonder if that has more to do with his sobriety than with security.

Those shoes are horrible. I’m a big Downey fan, love the man but I even said enough with the lifts. Then I thought why should we tell him to embrace his heights when a lot of us are similar. A lot of women wear heels because it makes them taller. I have a coworker who refuses to wear a heel lower than three inches because she’s short 5’1. A lot of women wear weaves because it gives them the appearance of having longer and a fuller head of hair. Should we say stop with the weaves, you’re not fooling anyone, embrace your natural hair. Should we say stop with the push up bras or spanks. Bottom line is a lot of people do something to alter the way they look. No one gives Prince any flack for his heels.
@V4real: Good point. Besides it’s not like he wears the shoes that are supposed to look normal on the outside with internal lifts. Those are obviously lifts, he isn’t hiding anything.
I think it’s because they want the appearance of longer legs, not because they actually want to be taller. Height has nothing to do with it, there are tall women with short legs after all.
I’m going to go with they want to be taller. Having the appearance of longer legs doesn’t differ much from wanting to appear taller. Still it’s Changing yourself to appear to be something you’re not.

I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but I don’t like RDJ. The way he reacted to Ricky Gervais at the Emmys (?) really made me think he can’t take a joke about himself. He made a lot of mistakes, but he should be proud he overcame them and be able to laugh off his youth. Being able to laugh at yourself is the most attractive quality to me and now I just find him annoying.
I’ve never been a fan either, he has a smugness that I’ve found off putting, even as I give him credit for overcoming his addiction problems. And his shoes always kill me, they’re such a cheesy look!
I realized I have giving him the benefit of the doubt because he overcame his drug issues.I heard about how he mistreated SJP and thought , “It was the drugs”.Now I am realizing he may be just a jerk.
God yes! That Golden Globe moment was what cemented my dislike for him as well. He comes across as such an unpleasant person. I don’t know how anyone could find him charming.

Not unpopular at all Allie – I find him altogether too smug, sarcastic and self-important by half and not that good an actor either. He’s lucked out doing the big franchises, more or less like Johnny Depp, but win an Oscar? Doubt it.

I believe that was The Golden Globes. And if that’s what you’re referring to, you must not be aware that it was all a part of the act. What Gervais said and Rob’s response was already prepared. Gervais said so himself. I think you forgot that the media accused Gervais of cracking mean jokes on the likes of Tim Allen and Tom Hanks and Downey. Gervais revealed it was planned and he had drinks with Hanks and Allen after the show.
A short time off Downey and Gervais did a promo skit together.
@Schnee How was he outed. That’s been talked about and around for years. Maybe you’re just one of the few that never heard it before. What he said was something like you can’t go from a two thousand a night suite to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal.
He didn’t say he was a Republican. BTW why do a lot of people think you must be Satan if you’re a,Republican. I’m a Democrat but I have Republican friends. If RDJ is a Rep, what’s the big deal? It’s his choice.
We sometimes forget that there are nice, decent, reasonable, accessible Republicans still out there. They’re the quiet ones, unlike the walking, talking firecrackers who dominate the internet and politics these days.
There are some starts that really come off as rude and unfriendly and he is one of them to name a few Bruce Willis,Sean Penn and Christian Bale don’t seem friendly at all. I could name a million more but my brain just froze.
Apart from that incident on ser, I think Bale us usually very nice to fans.

Yeah, I think Renner might actually be taller. Those shoes also make RDJ look like he has really small feet along with being silly looking. His entire outfit once again does not fit and looks cheap. Renner at least looks pulled together and he really knows how to look tailored with his clothes fitting his height.
There is a website called celebrity heights whose mission is to try and figure out how tall everyone really is. They have Downey and Ruffalo at 5’8″ and Renner just a bit taller. Ruffalo and Renner don’t wear lifts so it is always funny seeing them together.
Downey doesn’t seem to mind at all that people know and he happily stood on stage at the Oscars whilst the others joked about his height, even though two of them looked shorter. Maybe he is in on the joke and enjoys it.

Well RDJ’s co workers seem to like him quite a bit. He seems like a Diva but a caring person.
I worked with a VERY well known female musician once -but I was on of the lowly ‘local’ staffers rather than her own entourage.
She was without a doubt an utter bitch to my team – she refused to make eye contact or talk to us atall ( including me who was in charge) despite the fact that we had to engage with her at points as part of our work – to her entourage? ive rarely seen such a friendly sweet natured lady in that line of business.
It doesn’t make him nice it just makes him 2 faced.

Well, we don’t know what threats have been made against him. Taylor Swift has a similar security detail because she’s had stalkers and with what happened to Sandra Bullock, i din’t think we can judge them for wanting to feel safe in a world full of psychos. Kristen Stewart has also been sent death threats just before Twilight premieres by Rpattz fans which resulted in them being found in the crowd and removed. I would totally have all the security that i needed to feel safe. He still stopped for fans. There’s no issue here

I love Joss Whedon, really enjoyed the first Avengers, and have been into the entire Marvel universe lately…BUT I am getting so sick of these Avenger guys, especially Robert Downey Jr. and Renner. Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett are the only ones I want to see or hear about and I can’t wait until the Avengers push is over.

Omg his shoes are insane! I’m not particulary shocked by any of this, he’s an A-lister and as such he lives 24/7 with a security entourage. What puzzles me are the two recent incidents .. I like RDJ a lot, but this seriously let me down, I’m seeing him in a different light now. I still like him though, can’t help it, I’m just hoping he doesn’t do/say anything SO stupid anymore.
