Tom Hardy on his wild days: ‘I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack’

For months, if not years, Tom Hardy has been telling us that he’s really not the big, tough badass that he projects on-screen. He’s said versions of “I’m just a little bourgeois boy” so many times. So when will we believe him? I don’t know. I guess we’ll believe him when we collectively stop fantasizing about Tom having his way with all of us. Since Mad Max: Fury Road comes out this week, Tom has some assorted new interviews and quotes making the rounds. He spoke to a UK outlet and here was the stand-out quote:

“People didn’t sit up and take any notice of me until I started putting on weight, kicking people and being aggressive! The trouble with Hollywood is they want you to be something, then they think you’re who they wanted you to be. I’m not a fighter. I’m a petite little bourgeois boy from London. I was told very clearly, “You go down that road, Tom, you won’t come back.” That message stayed with me clearly for the rest of my days. I am f***ing lucky to be here. I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack.’

Tom has been in recovery for years now, but I always thought his addictions were more about cocaine and alcohol. I didn’t know he was smoking crack as well. That does make me see him differently. And to me, that sounds HARD. Like, being wild and smoking crack is a pretty hard life.

Tom also has a new interview with Vulture – you can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

He’s always covered up on-screen: “No one recognizes me for sh-t. I can’t get a free Coca-Cola in this city! Which is a good thing — I don’t deserve a free Coke, I’m just an actor. But maybe things will change.”

Off the set, Hardy hangs out with the crew: “And I’m another very small part of that machine. I’m a bit shy in that sense, and I like to keep to myself. I think, innately, that’s always going to be more of a characteristic to me than the need to be anything more. When push comes to shove and the bottom falls out and there’s no money left — and we do end up in an apocalyptic world — no fame’s gonna save me from being eaten!”

On fame: “Nothing really lasts forever, does it? Today’s news is tomorrow’s toilet roll, and I’m in the business of humiliation. It’s key. If you’re not failing, you’re not f–king doing your job properly. To find characters, one has to always play. You have to be open to rejection, failure, and humiliation, and one has to be brave in that sense. There’s two kinds of acting: There’s convincing and not convincing. And I’m guilty of both!”

[From Vulture]

Where are these magical places where Tom Hardy is never recognized? Are they the same places where Idris Elba goes unrecognized? I’d like to think that Tom – and Idris, for goodness sake – would be recognized everywhere. Sigh… I would give Tom a free Coke. I would give him a free meal. He could live in my pants for free too.

I loved him as Bane, and that crazy Sean Connery voice he did.

  2. mimif says:

I totally met Tom Hardy last night, he signed my beer bottle cap!!

    • mimif says:

And then I woke up. #truestory

    • Darkladi says:

You must be mistaken. Me & Tommy were snogging in my cabin in the woods. He was with me all night.

    • Kitten says:

Oh god he looks so good in that hoodie. I have such a weakness for guys in hoodies, especially with the hood up. I might need therapy.

He’s looking scuffalicious in these photos.

  3. GlimmerBunny says:

OMG I saw Mad Max today and he is so incredibly good and sexy in it! The movie in general is great, but I’m not gonna deny that Tom being the hottest I have EVER seen him helped make it my favorite movie of the year (so far).

    • mimif says:

I can’t wait to see it! Also, anybody catch the not-so-subtle shade Lainey threw at Hardy yesterday?

      • kri says:

Yes, caught the shade from Lainey. I think she frowns on his friendship with the O.G. Cap’n Dadbod, aka Leo. She is the one who had the hot tub photos with Tom and Leo and some model types. I adore him, though. And his acting is first rate. I’m excited to see MM.

      • coffeeandtea says:

What was the shade? Not sure I caught it.

      • Kitten says:

I wish we lived near each other Mimif and we could go see it together…sneak some beerskis into the theater..maybe hot box my car beforehand….

What shade? Not my Hardy!! How dare she.

      • Marty says:

Well Lainey had that cheating blind on him a couple of months ago, so maybe that was her way of dropping “hints”.

      • mimif says:

I’m late responding, but basically she threw him in the same corner as Leo and Batfleck, and she made it pretty obvious in the way she likes to do without incriminating herself.
        @Kitten, LESSDOIT!

  4. Don't kill me I'm French says:

It’s funny to read he says to be shy because on set he is not known like shy.

  5. Naddie says:

Damn, I’m starting to like this guy.

  6. OSTONE says:

He can live in my pants, too. With his roommates Matt Bomer and Channing Tatum.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

Kicking a crack addiction is damn near impossible, especially when you work in an industry where it’s in abundance. Stay strong, Tom.

    • Elisa the I. says:

yep. And is it just me or does he look rough in the pics with the hoodie?

  8. Shijel says:

I like his eloquence. Guy can definitely string a sentence together in a way that makes it flow and interesting to read.

Eh, I like him. I don’t find him sexy, but I like him. Sure, he has his demons, but unless something vile comes out… well, let’s just say that being generally likable can take some tint off the darker spots.

    • Jane says:

He’s a very intelligent guy; don’t be fooled by his ‘just an ordinairy guy’ look.

  9. Mia4S says:

I remember hearing about the crack and I believe heroin as well. He’s a really really troubled guy but so far no credible reports of him not being clean. Good luck to him because damn those are some heavy addictions.

  10. MtnRunner says:

I like it when he opens his mouth and spills… his interviews are so interesting.

  11. Lucy says:

What’s hard (for me) is not to like him. And damn, he’s been through some serious sh*t. Stay strong and be safe, Tom!!

  12. betsy says:

He’s great friends with Cumberbatch. He must be one of the only co stars Hardy gets on with . Him and Oldman. I must admit I didnt understand a word he said in his recent interview on a DC project.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

He hangs out with Dicaprio,Cillian Murphy ,Nomi Rapace,Vincent Cassell.
According to SHH forum, during TDKR,the lead actors lunched together (Hathaway,JGL,Oldman,Hardy,Bale and Caine) on set (excepted Cotillard because she was rarely on set and when she was there, she spent times with her new born son)

  13. Patricia says:

He has a small penis. I vote him though, I hope he will know how to handle success, but I’m afraid he’s already failing at it (see the pics of him a Leo and some “models” in a jacuzzi. poor Charlotte. Are we sure they’re actually married? He never wears a wedding band…

    • Patricia says:

Vote? Love him, I mean love him….

      • Britt says:

Tom is someone to love and respect. He’s honest, pure and besides that a gifted actor. He speaks with love about Charlotte (don’t believe all rumors) and yes, he married her last year. He does wear a wedding band (the one with the blue stone).
I hope he always stay ‘Tommy’.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

They probably have an agreement between them because they don’t spend many times together ….She works much in GB and he works much in USA/ Canada (8 months at Calgary last year)
