First look at Michael Fassbender in ‘Steve Jobs’: Oscar-baity or ridiculous?

Michael Fassbender has arrived in France, although we don’t have any photos of him yet. I’m just using some older photos of Fassy in this post, because I really wanted to talk about him ahead of the Cannes premiere of Macbeth, which will be happening this week. First of all, this week’s Star Magazine has a really strange story about Fassy and Marion Cotillard maybe getting together during filming?

She’s been involved with 42-year-old director Guillaume Canet for eight years, but that hasn’t stopped Marion Cotillard from getting cozy with her ‘Macbeth’ leading man, Michael Fassbender, 38. Insiders say Michael and Marion were so affectionate between takes, you’d think they were a couple in real life.

“Their chemistry is evident,” says a source. Michael has been dating Alicia Vikander since 2014, but has been spotted cuddling with Marion and calling her his “bella” on set. Marion and Guillaume have a 6-year-old son, but the source says their careers have been keeping them apart for months, and she’s finding comfort in Michael’s company.

Yeah, but they make it sound like this is an ongoing thing. They filmed Macbeth in early 2014. Then Fassy went and filmed The Light Between Oceans with Alicia Vikander and now they’re together. My guess is that nothing really happened between Marion and Michael, but if it did, it was a brief, on-set affair that didn’t last. I can’t wait to see Michael and Marion’s chemistry during the Macbeth press though – we should be able to figure some stuff out then.

Meanwhile, the first trailer for Steve Jobs has been released. This is the one written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle, both Oscar winners. So, this has Oscar-bait prestige pic written all over. Here’s the trailer:

Initial thoughts… Kate Winslet seems to be the weak link. It’s just like… why her? Why cast her in this role? Seth Rogen is playing Steve Wozniak and that fits so well, I kind of wonder if Seth isn’t going to end up with an Oscar nomination. As for Fassy… he looks more like Steve Jobs than I was expecting. Just goes to show you that if you put any random white guy in wire-frame glasses and a black turtleneck, they’ll probably have a passing resemblance to Steve Jobs.

    Middle aged Harry Potter lookalike

  2. perplexed says:

    They couldn’t dye his hair?

  3. aims says:

How many more films will be mad regarding Steve Jobs?

  4. M.A.F. says:

The only thing that stood out was his acceent.

    • Ethelreda says:

      He sounds like Bono!

Fassy is a great actor, but he can’t do American accents to save his life. Didn’t they have to make his character in ”Shame” into an ”Irish American” to excuse his accent?

    • korra says:

      His accent work is horrendous.

      • Andrea says:

I love Fassbender but his accent is again horrendous. He needs to stick to European/irish/English roles.

  5. Bridget says:

Calling her “bella”? Blech. I hope that’s not true.

And all I can think about with this Steve Jobs mess is “come join this movie Leo and we can finally get you that Oscar!”

  6. FingerBinger says:

There needs to be a better trailer.

  7. Catelina says:

Hard to really get a feel from that clip. But Fassy is a good actor, so if this brings him more recognition, I guess that’s a nice thing.

  8. perplexed says:

The dialogue seems lame. If this was the movie Leo turned down, I can see why.

Was that Kate Winslet’s or Marion Cottilard’s voice in the trailer?

  9. dr mantis toboggan says:

I feel my stocks rising … I dunno, that’s the best I can do. My other one was too vulgar

  10. Rhiley says:

After Jobs, starring Kutcher, do we really need another Steve Jobs biopic?

  11. NUTBALLS says:

That trailer wasn’t much to go on, but Fassy could nail the role. Is this movie based on the Isaacson bio?

  12. Lindy79 says:

Acting wise Fassy has the chops but honestly Kutcher looked SO like him, it made his film easier to watch. He doesnt look even remotely like him, his bloody hair is the same as it always is.

  13. Mindy says:

Oscar-baity, no doubt and very VERY… meh. Still, no matter how good or bad it is, Fassy will do 1,000 times better in the role than Ashton Kutcher did (but possibly no better than Noah Wylie did in ‘Pirates of Silicon Valley’).

And sorry, Seth Rogen as Woz? … REALLY?!?! Not saying that Seth is ‘cool’.. but Woz is just one step above Sheldon Cooper on the normal scale.

  14. Peach says:

I know there was a lot of skepticism about Fassy taking on this role especially after all the controversy over the email leaks, etc. but I think he will pull this off. I think with both Hamlet and Jobs, this will be a good year for him.

And he can rock the black turtleneck along with the best of them. 😉

  15. Cheryl says:

The Kate Winslet role was Natalie Portman’s but for whatever reason she gave up.

  16. perplexed says:

“Initial thoughts… Kate Winslet seems to be the weak link. It’s just like… why her? Why cast her in this role?”

    Why not?

  17. Abigail says:

Actually, Fassbender has captured Jobs’ expression and manner really well–look at the product introductions on youtube.
    And his accent is fine.

  18. K. says:

That story about him and Marion is completely fabricated. Gossip Cop has also denied it.
The teaser is fine. That’s the last launch, and IMO there’s a resemblance. Above all I’m sure Fassbender has studied his mannerism very well.
Anyway,Fassy seems to enjoy his time at Cannes 🙂

I think Michael Fassbender is a great actor and this may give him another Oscar nomination for playing Steve Jobs, and I will believe this thouh, I bel he will take a lot of hype. And ran with it. With that being said this movie is a snooze fest. I Think the director was so desperate and eager to work with him, and everyone loves him. Especially Kate Winslet who has nothing but ” high praises ” for him. Everyone loves him. Don’t get me wrong I st love MFassy with a passion, I think when you think people love you too much, is where you need to look over your shoulder and turn west.
As for his ” friends ” the only friends he’s got in that circle is Zoe. Also, the rumors with Marion Cottiliar, star to surface, and of course this is not a thing, but who’s to say they will be more rumors when he is in the other films to come.
