Mark Ruffalo: ‘It’s a patriarchal system across the board. Literally.’

Here are some photos of Mark Ruffalo at the premiere of his new film, Infinitely Polar Bear, a few nights ago. I keep calling this film Infinity Polar Bear, which I tend to think is a better name than Infinitely Polar Bear. Anyway, Ruffalo gave a rather epic interview to the Daily Beast to promote his new film – you can read the full piece here. He talks about his new movie (which is kind of boring and I’m not excerpting from that part), sexism, Marvel films and more. Some highlights:

On women taking their husbands’ names: “Where do they come from? It’s a patriarchal system across the board. Literally. Women have long said, “We’ve got to get this under control,” and they’ve been fighting that ever since. We’re having these conversations now in a real way and becoming aware of sexism; it’s so embedded in us. I grew up in an Italian family where the woman stayed home and the father went to work, and that stuff is still inside me. I have to make a conscious evaluation of my own. I have two girls. Even the way I talk to them, and what I expect of them, still has a sexism inside it that I have to be vigilant against. You become aware of it in bits and pieces. It’s so firmly ingrained because we’ve been doing it for so long.

The backlash against The Hulk & Black Widow’s romance: “I was trying to make a greater point than that. My wife turned me on to that, and I was like, “Yeah, right!” and then that turned into a much larger conversation—the whole thing with Joss Whedon, and the Bruce and Natasha relationship that pissed off so many people. I was like, “Come on, guys! You’re talking about a guy in Joss who does write some pretty strong women. I mean, Buffy. Come on dude! Come on!” So let’s reflect on that. Maybe it’s because we don’t have enough women playing these kinds of roles that you’re taking Joss to task for this.

There aren’t enough good roles for women: “That’s exactly what it is. So a man can be weak and no one says anything, but if a woman’s weak everyone’s like, “What the f–k is this?! You misogynist a–hole!” And you’re like, “What are you talking about? Go watch Buffy!” And I see Bruce Banner as the one who’s constantly being saved! He’s the one who’s emasculated. You don’t say anything about the fact that Scarlett is the one protecting him all the time, and the one time he goes around and does something for her, all of a sudden people are like, “What the F–K!” There’s just nowhere to hide with this s–t anymore.

Whether we could have a female president: “There could be. Unless Bernie Sanders comes in. I don’t know!

On the concerns that Bernie Sanders’ supporters won’t come out: “I don’t know, man! I remember the same thing was being said about Barack Obama. I think Sanders has a message. Hillary’s going to have to adopt Bernie’s message, and I think we’re going to be hearing a lot more from Bernie.

The Republicans: “It’s already a clown show. It’s incredible, the sh-t that comes out of their mouths. They’re going to drive off the cliff! They are, man. It’s out of control. There’s no even censoring it anymore. Americans don’t want billionaires running our government. They just don’t. And they’re sick of it. And they’re aware of it.

Working for Marvel versus doing indie films: “I want to be an indie actor, and want to keep doing these types of movies—Infinitely Polar Bear and Spotlight. They feed me. And Marvel feeds me and my kids, you know?”

[From The Daily Beast]

That’s interesting… I didn’t know that he was into Bernie Sanders and not Hillary Clinton. Sanders’ campaign has surprised me, mostly because he’s already playing perfectly into the wing of the Democratic party that was primed for an Elizabeth Warren candidacy. I wonder how Ruffalo would feel about Warren running? He would probably be all for it. Anyway, I like what he says about sexism and needing to be conscious of patriarchy every day in the way he deals with his daughters. Sigh… so underrated.

Yep. Love him. Love Bernie, but of course would have loved Warren a bit more. Bernie is a little old, but SOMEONE has to say what he’s saying.

X100000. This is everything I came here to say, but let’s just add a *swoooon*. I love me some Ruffalo.

      • *North*Star* says:

You and me both. Mark is smart AND hawt — deadly combination.

        *fans face*

    • laura in LA says:

      +1
My thoughts exactly, mkyarwood, everything you said pretty much sums it up.

To Kaiser, I’d also add that Ruffalo was in fact behind the big push for Warren to run, but she has steadfastly refused (and perhaps rightfully so).

      • Maria A. says:

I’m glad Warren is staying in the Senate. She can get a hell of a lot done there in the trenches. Look at how the Republicans have blocked Obama and the Democrats every chance they could find. We need more people like Warren fighting for us in Congress.

  2. Abbott says:

Dude really has a thing for Buffy.

  3. Azurea says:

It’s the billionaires BEHIND the scenes who are running the government.

    • Birdix says:

While I’m inclined to believe you, if this were absolutely true, they would have saved Lehman bros (Bank of Evil).

      • goofpuff says:

they saved it up until they couldn’t anymore. all that should have gone bust long ago. look how they keep pumping government money and contracts to save American companies that should have gone bust because of their horrible business decisions.

  4. Birdix says:

I’m picturing the patriarchy literally across a board. Walking over the board? Sprawled across it? Great points he makes otherwise though.

  5. Dhavynia says:

The older he gets the better he gets, sigh.

He’s right about how different cultures and backgrounds have these views on how women should be but it takes a strong man to step back and check himself before unconsciously implementing the same old school tradition

  6. Jayna says:

Thank you, thank you for doing a Mark Ruffalo story. I adore him and never can get enough of him. His interviews are always great and interesting. His story getting into acting and what happened to him when he had the benign brain tumor, etc. His brother also was murdered in 2008, whom he was very close to, a hairdresser in California.

He gives interviews on a lot of but still has a self-deprecating sense of humor that comes through also. I think he’s very thoughtful about his role as a father. He’s very political, so his comments here don’t surprise me. He’s got a lot to say on twitter regarding issues, so always interesting to read his tweets.

  7. Jenns says:

He’s a big supporter of Warren. He would Tweet and Re-Tweet anything on Twitter that supported her run for presidency.

  8. poppy says:

Well the Bruce Banner/Black Widow romance was pretty lame and ScarJo, who is supposed to be a badass superhero all of a sudden cooing and purring up to Banner felt all wrong. The romance was like a cheesy TV subplot, terrible. Whedon just doesn’t have the talent to direct interesting character scenes, wasn’t Ruffalo’s fault though.

    • goofpuff says:

I’m annoyed she has to be linked to anyone at all. Can she just do an avengers movie where she doesn’t have to be romanced and just kick ass, have a storyline not involving a man, and lead a really good subplot of her own?

      • poppy says:

It is a lame and lazy story device and also maybe Marvel wanting to save some money in not paying for another actress to come in and play the real live love interest to these superheroes. AoU was a complete mess of a movie.

      • Jessica Fletcher says:

…but she hasn’t had a romantic plot before!

Can she just do an avengers movie where she doesn’t have to be romanced and just kick ass, have a storyline not involving a man, and lead a really good subplot of her own?

That’s literally every Marvel movie Black Widow has been in! I understand that you did’nt personally enjoy that plot, but it’s done, and over now, and Nat will go back to being kick-@ss and snarky now.

Seriously, if BW never had a romantic story line then people would complain that her character wasn’t being served, she was being ignored in favour of male characters, women on screen can’t be romantic/sexual and a hero…

Sorry, I don’t mean to attack you personally, but this kind of over-reaction to gives feminism a bad name, I see it all the time, as a movie and comic nerd online. When people react so hatefully (as Ruffalo described in the interview, with the tweets and overreactions) it means that that’s where the focus is, instead of legitimate concerns about the amount of women or PoC. The conversation is about BrucexNatasha, and not about Natasha as a character, or Wanda, or the fact that the Avengers now have 2 female and 2 MoC members.

Sorry to take my frustrations out on you, goofpuff. That had been building for a while.

      • Lilacflowers says:

She was not romanced in Iron Man 2. She was not romanced in Avengers. She was not romanced in Captain America: Winter Soldier. She initiated a fake flirtation for the purpose of a decoy so they could escape people who were chasing them.

  9. Tuffluckcowgirl says:

Dear Mark Ruffalo – thank you for saying refreshing, truthful, and awesome things. I’m sure you’re a fantastic dad. Thanks again, Me

  10. Miss Jupitero says:

    My boyfriend! 🙂

  11. Lilacflowers says:

Really looking forward to the release of Spotlight, though, as always, worried about the accents.

  12. Falula says:

If I could just forget he was a 9/11 truth we he would be perfect.

    • Falula says:

      *truther

    • j says:

i don’t understand how a reasonable, intelligent person can be a 9/11 truther, which makes me think he’s got out whacked-out views that just haven’t come out yet

  13. Crumpet says:

Ha! I was just telling my 18 year old step-son that we live in a society that is white male dominated. His response? “Oh please, I am so tired of hearing excuses.” As I head off to work to support his butt while he goes to college online.

    Bah!

(Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I admire Mark’s glorious bulge in that last photo)!)

  14. Catelina says:

He’s extremely frank in interviews, which is a little uncomfortable at times but also refreshing. He’s also a classic ‘husband material’ celeb

  15. LAK says:

His comments about women taking their husbands’ names should be trumpeted from on high, sky written, sewn on pillows etc.

It’s such a subtle insidious thing that women accept and even celebrate and will actually defend when it’s completely and resolutely celebrates their lack of agency, but you know, tradition……

    • Crumpet says:

In Europe, couples often hyphen their last names to include both. The men and women.

    • Mila says:

it does not make any sense though.

i have my name from my father, my monther has her name from her father, those two fathers have their names from their fathers etc. its all men, true. but its impossible to change now. meaning; if a man takes his wifes name he is taking her fathers fathers fathers fathers name.
there is no way to change that in cultures where that is the norm, hypenated names are also two male names.

its just not practial to make this into a big issue. take what name you like.

      • LAK says:

Mila, do you know what else didn’t make sense and or was considered a non starter? Feminism. (And all types of movements like civil rights)

It’s always the default argument of the system-in-charge to say that change is difficult, doesn’t make sense and or a non starter. Their arguments can be very persuasive.

Everybody should have their own name. There are cultures in this world where that happens and no one is confused.

The idea that woman should change their names is indoctrinated from childhood. Even disney princess stories reinforce that message (amongst many other questionable messages) so that we grow thinking this is a cute tradition.

A line in the sand needs to be drawn, just like a line was drawn to kick start feminism itself.

      • Mila says:

how would you compare my comment to people saying fighting for equal rights doesnt make sense?

try to argue with the point i made. where would those “own” names for women come from? in the west lots of countries only have male names. your name isnt your name, it comes from a long line of men.

also “everyone should have their own names” is your personal choices, others, men and women, may want to have their partners name.

as i said pick what you like better but dont tell me it would make an actual difference if a man takes a womans name because her name is her fathers name anyway.

    • Luna says:

Women should do as they please, taking your husband name, is a choice as any other.

  16. PennyLane says:

I admit to being a huge, huge fan of mark Ruffalo, but I am a bit disappointed that he refused to comment for this article on systemic hiring barriers in Hollywood:

    http://www.laweekly.com/news/how-hollywood-keeps-out-women-5525034

It’s mind-boggling that we’ve gone from having 16% of studio films being directed by women in 1995 down to 2% women directors last year. And this happened during a time period when female enrollment in film schools went from women being one third to one half of graduating students, so they can’t talk about there being ‘no talent in the pipeline’ either. It’s just straight-up sexism.

    • Jessica Fletcher says:

I saw that article referenced on Lainey recently, and I too was disappointed to see he didn’t comment. However, perhaps he didn’t want to comment without giving it a lot of thought and it was a time issue?

I can justify a lot when I fancy someone! 😄

  17. Catelina says:

I will say that women taking their husbands names, if that’s what they want to do, doesn’t bother me. It should be up to everyone to make tht desicion for themselves.

  18. MAC says:

An interview with someone who has something interesting to say. Politics is all money here in the United States, so that I have to disagree with. Donald Trump simply said the truth about his net worth. He just confirmed its all about money. No one could even run for President now without being in a certain financial class.

Great what he said about watching what he says and making an effort not to repeat that with his children.

I enjoyed reading this interview and I enjoy his acting. He seems like a sweet guy with an awareness that is attractive all on its own

  19. Mila says:

good for him for also calling out the attacks on Joss, it was really sad to see feminists attack Whedon.

  20. kri says:

Oh, I love him. Please clone him, STAT.

  21. serena says:

I love him, he’s a great man! Please give us more Ruffalo! 🙂

  22. Irene says:

I’m really side-eyeing him for how he supposedly supports all these feminist causes but dismisses any argument against Whedon because they’re buddies, and thinks he should be able to dictate whether women should have found the characterization insulting. It’s not his call to make.

Also, “But… Buffy!” Is not a valid counter argument against Whedon’s current actions, creating one feminist icon 20 years ago doesn’t make him infallible.

    • poppy says:

Good point! BW is hardly a character, I as a woman look up to, and Whedon didn’t do an exceptional job making her an interesting character. Cobi Smulders character was reduced to being Tony Stark’s secretary. Meh!

  23. Kitten says:

Sigh. I am so hot for this guy.

    • MC2 says:

Me too- never saw it until now but I love it when he opens his mouth & speaks. He’s getting hotter by each interview.

  24. pirategirl says:

Love Mark! He’s from my town, and I have a couple friends that dateed him in high school. He was a fun & good guy back then too. Still funny to see him as the Hulk, he’s done a great job though.
