Mamie Gummer is delightfully bitchy about LA: ‘Homogenous & stagnating’

Mamie Gummer

Did you ever think you’d see the day when Meryl Streep would star in a Diablo Cody-written film? Meryl plays a rock star trying to make amends with her children in Ricki and the Flash. The movie has an interesting cast, including Sebastian Stan and Rick Springfield. Meryl’s real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer, plays her daughter in the movie. They also both appeared in Evening but played the same character in different phases of life. It must be hard coming into the business as Meryl’s daughter, but Mamie handles her own career (including a role on The Good Wife) pretty well .

Mamie has a new interview with Backstage to promote Ricki. Some excerpts:

: “I think weather is how stories start. It’s, like, the rains come, you’ve got to make a choice. You’ve got to find shelter. It activates. There’s conflict, and the group comes together. My favorite thing ever is the beginning of spring, when everyone sort of collectively emerges from this hibernation of ‘That was rough, huh? But we made it through.’ I have a good coat. And I like the camaraderie that’s bred in the face of that, even though it’s a low level of adversity. I like walking into a crowded, warm restaurant and everyone’s in there seeking the same warmth and consolation. I dig that.”

She prefers New York City to Los Angeles: She quotes Mark Twain — “Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company” — in comparing the two cities. “I’d rather be in hell and in good company,” she says, adding that Hollywood’s high society is unbearable for similar reasons. “It’s homogenous. It’s the sameness that starts to feel stultifying and stagnating, like everyone’s running on empty. It’s like SoulCycle, a whole city of SoulCycling. Spinning, spinning, spinning, going nowhere.”

She also can’t find work in LA: She moved there for a change of scene, she says, after her marriage to actor Benjamin Walker ended, and suddenly she “just couldn’t get a job. I didn’t work, really, for over a year. And it wasn’t for lack of trying. So I started really doing that thing that everybody tells you to do. Just treat an audition like an opportunity. This is your chance to just try stuff, try something. Have fun. That’s what got me out the door.”

She yells at Meryl in this movie: “That was fun. But it was hard to come down so furiously on the person that I actually love the most in the world.” She and Streep would communicate wordlessly, as only parents and children can, keeping each other’s performances truthful between takes of particularly fraught scenes. “It was a mirror thing, like, ‘You weren’t buying that, were you? Me neither.’ She’s one of the very few people who knows when I’m lying.”

[From Backstage]

Mamie’s career downswing in LA correlates with the period following her surprise divorce in 2013. She didn’t enjoy LA at all for that reason and more. I think she’ll be just fine. Mamie has serious talent. She’s not one of those bubbly “it” girls, but that will work to her advantage in the long term. Girl’s got longevity in her veins. Here’s the Ricki and the Flash trailer again. It looks really good.

I just played that ‘left face / right face’ game with her first photo – you know, where you pop a mirror in the middle of the person’s nose to see how they’d look if their face was a perfect match on both sides … and wow! … it’s quite different.

She looks like a Meryl Streep-Uma Thurman hybrid – I love her style 🙂

  2. Lilacflowers says:

I hope she gets more work. I think she brings a lot of personality to a role.

  3. Dinah says:

Mamie sounds a lot like Meryl. I remember being shocked Meryl married Don Gummer so soon after the loss of her fiance, the late John Cazale, famous for playing Sal in DOG DAY AFTERNOON, and for other great films. John died of brain cancer and was a gifted actor. He was like the late James Broderick, who was also superb in DDA. Mamie sounds well educated for sure.

    • Franca says:

Cazale was such an amazing actor.

      • Dinah says:

I agree. By all accounts, a lovely man to be around and work with. He brought out the best in Al Pacino.

    • Tiffany says:

When Fredo was looking at Michael when he told he knew of his batrayal and when he ran away from Michael in Cuba. The fear on his face, I still get chills when I watch that scenes.
The man had skills, that’s for sure.

      • Dinah says:

So much expression for a “hangdog face.” Even Sidney Lumet, not one to praise actors, was amazed by the emotional intensity of John’s silence and facial expression alone. I laugh until I cry at the scene in DDG where, in the middle of a media circus of a Brooklyn bank robbery, surrounded by hundreds of cops and their lives on the line, Sal’s upset that the news is reporting two homosexuals are robbing the bank. Sal keeps telling Sonny: “But I’m not homosexual!” And, of course, the remarkably ad-libbed line about Wyoming being the “country” he wants to flee to from the police.

    • Michelle says:

Cazale was incredible. For anyone interested, “I Knew it Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale” was a great documentary. He was such an underrated actor.

      • belle de jour says:

Thank you! One of my favorite actors lurking in the back of my mind, yet I was unaware of this doc. You have just made my weekend much more interesting.

(He was nothing short of astonishing in DDA… and it was probably my favorite – or at least, the sweetest – Pacino role ever… but not a surprise, because Sidney Lumet) 🙂

    • Jib says:

Well, Meryl and Mamie’s older and younger sisters all went to Vassar, although I don’t think she did. My son was friendly with the younger daughter, Louisa, there, and met the other two sisters at a party. He said Mamie is a doll, but the older sister is a nasty piece of work.

  4. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Her story sums the nepotism angle very well – it’s easier for the children of famous people to get a break, but it doesn’t mean they will have great careers. She is the daughter of Meryl Streep, it can’t get better than that in terms of connections in the movie business, yet she was unemployed for a year and she’s now in a movie with her mother or maybe she’d still be unemployed. She’s working hard, but is not even close to a star status, because people in the business don’t care, even if Meryl Streep asks, if the person doesn’t have the special something they are looking for. If she will have a longevity in the business, it will be due to her talent and I’m actually rooting for her, because she’s way more talented than many of the more popular actresses. But yes, she’s doesn’t have “it” girl qualities and it seems to be the most important “special something” one can possess these days.

    • Twinkle says:

      +1000

Also – and I don’t mean for this to sound negative – she doesn’t have the cookie-cutter looks that a lot of actresses do nowadays. She looks like an individual and kind of artsy. #Like.

      • CK says:

Yeah, it’s terrible, but if Mamie had a better face, the fact that she is Meryl Streep’s daughter would work out a hell of a lot more for her. If her younger sister, Louisa, who models, ever decides to go into acting the difference will be like night and day. I do think Mamie will probably have a career renaissance when she’s older though unless Grace hits is big or Louisa overshadows them both a la Elizabeth Olsen.

    • Luca76 says:

Yeah she’s definitely been given chances because of being Meryl’s daughter but it also limits her because she doesn’t have ‘it’. It also must suck to be compared to the greatest actress of modern times.

  5. INeedANap says:

Mamie Gummer and Eva Amurri are both talented women who seem to have a realistic and disciplined view of their careers — longevity through well-acted parts in interesting ensembles. They’re both a delight to watch. Seriously, if you haven’t seen Saved!, go do that now.

    • Betsy says:

Amurri was also briefly in New Girl and she was such a (bitchy) delight to watch.

  6. Felice. says:

She was good enough in AHS as disturbing as her story was. And I agree about LA. If I go the west again, I’ll live in Las Vegas.

    • CK says:

That was Grace Gummer, her younger sister, as Penny in AHS.

    • N2 says:

I completely disagree with her comments about L.A., having lived here on off since the 90s. If you’re living on the Westside of L.A. or a trendy part of the city on the other side of town, you’re likely to run into people obsessed with Soul Cycle and the like, but the majority of folks here aren’t living that lifestyle. Plenty of people here have no association with Hollywood and aren’t living the plastic, vapid sort of L.A. existence shown in movies. Most of my neighbors wouldn’t even know what Soul Cycle was, but I live in a mostly working class Latino community in Northeast L.A. On the flip side, I doubt people in Manhattan are any less image conscious than people in Hollywood, so I don’t buy her comments at all.

      • Jib says:

Yeah, but she lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn. My kids live there and it’s awesome! Family neighborhood, street fairs every weekend, great restaurants and bodegas, but not pretentious even though the brownstones go for 2 million and up. If I ever moved back to NYC, I’d live here.

      • korra says:

Yeah I take issue with these people saying that. LA is home to a great arts scene as well as a phenomenal scientific community. Just because these people hang out with bimbos doesn’t mean all of LA is like that. But NorCal all the way bitches.

  7. Izzy says:

    This movie actually looks good.

  8. NewWester says:

After reading Mamie’s interview she has a good attitude about working. Also it sounds like she has a sarcastic edge which would work great in a satire sitcom or movie about the LA high society from a struggling actress’s point of view.

  9. Kiddo says:

I don’t remember her in The Good Wife, at all.

  10. zzzz says:

I find her voice really soothing, and she has a very pretty smile. that’s all I’ve got.

  11. Tig says:

Her ex-hubbie flamed out pretty fast- he was the toast of B’way for a while, and then Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter was supposed to make him a star- and nope. Didn’t he get engaged to another girl right after their divorce? I liked the trailer to her movie, but will be there primarily for Sebastian Stan- he is so cute!!

  12. Ellecommelejour says:

Her character on Extant is sooooooo annoying ! I could slap her every time I see her!

    • Rice says:

Really? I thought she was one of the stand-outs. To each his own, I guess.

    • N2 says:

The “Extant” character is her sister, Grace. I can’t stand that sister either, but I found Mamie annoying on “The Good Wife.” I think that has more to do with how her character is written, a Michigan lawyer who tries to use her small-town charm to win over judges/juries, than Mamie as an actress.

  13. Jayna says:

Hate on me all you want. She has small close-set eyes and a big, crooked nose in between. This is one girl that really needs a nose job. I’m not saying get a Barbie nose job, but a nose job to make it better at some angles but keep the character of her nose and face. Just shave off milimeters here and there. It’s just bad at certain angles. And you are on camera and it’s important how your face is captured on camera. It would also open up her eyes more if her nose wasn’t that prominent on her face and seems to overpower it. Do a nose job like Gisele did, which she still kept her strong nose, just tweaked a little. I’m just being honest. When you are on camera in so many close-ups , I think it would make a difference. I’m sure I’m going to be bashed for stating my honest opinion that’s not politically correct. LOL But I’m truly only talking just millimeters, a slight tweaking, keeping the character of her nose.

    • ummmm says:

Whats hilarious is this is exactly what Mamie meant by “homogeneous and stagnating.” Hah.

Everyone runs to the same plastic surgeon, pays for the same face, and prays that it’ll make people like them and give the more screen time. Anything to make it (besides actual hard work/ dedication to their craft).

I’d take Mamie’s face 1000000x over before I’d have a hollowed-out, plastic-filled and silicone-stuffed Megan Fox, Mickey Rourke, Courtney Stodden etc. etc.

      • Jayna says:

I guess you missed the point I made twice, not a Barbie nose, but keeping the same character of her nose, like Gisele did, which is a strong nose and far from perfect or small.

Disagree with me. I have no problem with that.,, but don’t twist my words by inferring that I said she should get a perfect little nose to get the same face as everyone else. I never once said she just lose the character of her nose if you read my post.

Bringing Courtney Stodden or Megan Fox into what I said makes zero sense. But that’s because you read what you wanted to read in my post.

      • ummmm says:

I was simply replying to the irony of it. Sorry if it seems like I put words in your mouth. That ‘everyone runs to same doc’ thing was all me.

It’s not hard to get what you were saying. You think Mamie “needs to” fix the bump in her nose, her defining feature, because it would help to make her nose look better/more normal.

It would homogenize her. It wouldn’t be Mamie’s unique nose anymore. It would be an off-the-rack, doctor-ordered $6k and change special. Big, small, straight, Barbie or not. It would be bought.

  14. moomoo says:

I loved her in a really bad medical drama (forget the name). Didn’t know who she was at all but was always impressed by her acting.

  15. Jayla says:

Emily owens, md was the name of that show. Am I the only one that thinks mamie and grace can pass as twins? I cant tell the two apart sometimes.

  16. lila fowler says:

    She sounds pretentious as hell.

  17. Ashley says:

She bothered the HELL out of me in Newsroom, but I couldn’t figure out if it was her or her character. Horrible character, that’s for sure. Can’t believe I didn’t realize she was Meryl’s daughter until recently!

  18. serena says:

Aww I’ll watch that movie! Mamie is really talented, I discovered her on a medical drama that got cancelled after just a season.. (too bad), hope she’ll find more amazing projects in the future.

  19. Falula says:

My years at Northwestern overlapped Gummer’a and I’m irrationally excited about that.

  20. Jillian says:

Maybe if she went outside of “Hollywood high society” she’d realize that Los Angeles is a huge, vibrant, multicultural city and nothing about it is homogenous or stagnant. >:(

I moved to LA from San Diego for college and stayed, and while I’ll always prefer SD, I gotta stand up for my city when people who only live in a teeny tiny exclusive world tar all of it with that same brush.

    • N2 says:

Jillian, I totally agree and made a similar point up thread. Sick of elite people painting L.A. with a broad brush.

  21. Stephanie says:

I don’t watch cable so I have never seen her before. When I saw the trailer for Ricki, I thought, WOW how did they find that girl who looks like like Meryl? I don’t follow Meryl gossip and didn’t know she had daughters. Cool story, Hansel. Lol

  22. Sunshine Gold says:

It’s so cliche & annoying for celebrities to bash LA. I guess if you don’t leave Brentwood you wouldn’t know that it’s a huge city and there’s plenty of places to live, eat and hang that do not involve Soul Cycle enthusiasts.

  23. S says:

    Meryl Streep’s daughter. Hmmmm.

  24. LA Juice says:

” It must be hard coming into the business as Meryl’s daughter, ”

um, what? Are you nuts? She had a tv pilot HANDED to her before anyone had ever seen her on TV or filmor ANYTHING, and it went for like a half a season despite being universally rejected quicker than CopRock or Bad Judge… As far as I can see, the only reason this girl gets work is because of who her mother happens to be…. she’s TERRIBLE at the acting thing.

I seriously thought- Why the hell did Meryl Streep do a Diablo Cody movie, then I saw her daughter was in it, and realized my answer.
