Kristen Stewart: ‘Dude, you would think I was cool if you got to know me’

KS3

Elle UK has released more photos from their September issue editorial with cover girl Kristen Stewart. While I liked the cover (we covered it yesterday), I’m not loving the rest of the shoot. The bright colors are nice, but why in the world would you style Kristen to look so dirty and greasy AGAIN? Like, that’s how she exists in the zeitgeist. She always looks dirty, her hair always looks unwashed and I just want to throw her in the shower and lock her in there for 30 minutes. Anyway, Elle UK has released some interview excerpts:

Whether she smiles: “The whole smiling thing is weird because I actually smile a lot. I literally want to be like, ‘Dude, you would think I was cool if you got to know me.’”

She’s not anti-social media: “I’m not anti-social media. I just haven’t decided to do it. The idea of addressing such a massive group… If I don’t know who I’m talking to it doesn’t make any f**king sense to me.”

Feminism, apologies: “I apologize constantly, incessantly…. There’s something so natural about saying ‘yes’, I think with women there’s a natural inclination to want to satisfy people.”

Her style: She prefers “comfort and practicality” over anything else. “I wear jeans and—I always say this and it’s so boring to do fashion interviews for magazines … I don’t really have a fashion icon. I’ve never tried to emulate someone’s thing.”

Toughness: “I like to make people think that I am.”

Dogs: “I have three. They make me feel safe.”

[From The Daily Mail]

I tend to believe her about all of this. I don’t think she’s trying to emulate anyone’s style, nor is she trying to be a stand-alone fashion icon. If anything, I think her interest in fashion has decreased in her years in the spotlight. I also think she only smiles in private, but she’s publicly grumpy and sullen and that’s her “thing.” If she came out as a super-smiley person at this point, we would be like, “Damn, what’s she trying to prove?” And “She’s such a try-hard nowadays!”

Kristen will also be traveling to Venice soon – her film with Nicholas Hoult, Equals, will be premiering at the Venice Film Festival. Hopefully we’ll be getting premiere photos for American Ultra soon too.

Here’s Elle’s video for Kristen’s shoot. They called it “How to be a Badass.”

    I DON’T CARE, KRISTEN.

  2. Snazzy says:

‘Dude, you would think I was cool if you got to know me.’ Umm NO

  3. aims says:

    She’s still a horrible actress.

    • G says:

still winning awards and working with A list directors though … 🙂

      • kay says:

        Still playing herself.

      • G says:

        Not true

      • Neah23 says:

Yes nothing says winner like work with a known pedophile and sexual predator.

        Working with Woddy Allen: Check

        Working with Uncle Terry: Check

        = Winner?

      • mädchen says:

She is 🙂 and it makes me happy for her and her fans and other people who like watching movies and enjoying her. She got so many genuine positive comments on her acting in the last two years. People pretending like it’s not the case is hilarious to watch. Also doesn’t change the fact, she is successful 🙂

    • OVWonKanoobi says:

I can’t with her. She’s so basic in every way.

    • Div says:

      @Neah23

It’s fair game to call out a celebrity for working with Woody Allen, but she was photographed by Uncle Terry for some magazine when she was doing The Runaways which was like five or six years ago. Back then, nearly every prominent magazine was hiring him to photograph tons of celebrities and it was before the allegations. He even photographed President Obama five or six years ago. So frankly, that’s unfair to slam her with.

  4. Jay says:

Wow, she really loves that wall!

I think she’s kinda cool, but too self aware to be really “cool”, if you know what I mean.

  5. Cat girl says:

Yeah, no I wouldn’t think you’re cool if I knew you.

  6. Helena says:

    Girl, you’re an awful actress

  7. G says:

She’s gorgeous, crazy rich, successful and Patti Smith is her bestie – yet people b*tch about her not smiling enough for their standards. zzzzzz

Yet another movie in competition at a major film festival, too! Bella who?

    • kay says:

Pretty much every actor has films at festivals. Try harder, stan!

      • G says:

        @kay Aw, bless!

        And again, not true x

      • Riccardo says:

        @G
Yes festivals have bad movies all the time. Venice Festival had Madonna’s movie three years ago. A flop

      • Div says:

@kay Um, no. Why are you so bothered by that nothing comment? It’s not even a super stan type of comment even if she is a stan. Sure, some festivals have flops but it’s a good sign if a film makes it to TIFF, Venice, or Cannes. Most actors don’t have films that make it to the big three. She recently won a Cesar, is doing another Assayas film, is in a film with Michelle Williams and Laura Dern, and just wrapped an ensemble part in an Ang Lee film. You don’t have to like her or like her acting, but her career is solid and it’s weird to act like it’s not.

      • G says:

        @Div

It’s really funny to see Kristen haters try to dismiss, reduce and ignore how well Kristen’s career is going. It’s gonna be a long life for them!

    • Cynthia says:

Oh you’re always posting bad comments on JLaw?s articles. Now I see that you’re a jelous Stewart stan

    • mädchen says:

      Agree 100%

  8. Greta says:

Is she mad because people hate her? She sounds desperate

    • Anname says:

I don’t think Kristen is mad – I think her superfans are always mad that some people don’t like her, and never will.

      • mädchen says:

It goes both ways. There are indeed some fans who are OTT, but there are also some others on the opposite side, who are as strange in their way. I understand completely not liking someone. But I don’t get the obsession with hating on that person. Also don’t get their dismissal of other opinions, comments like “stop trying to make her/him…” or “stop calling her/ him…” just because they disagree. I simply don’t get the “stop liking what I don’t like” mentality, especially among adults.

      • Anname says:

I think the thing that annoys me the most is the superfan insistent that Kristen gets worse hate than any other celebrity, and the “it’s not fair” thing. Kristen caused her own scandal, she created her own bad press with her “f-off attitude” for years. You reap what you sow, right? She is no different than any other celebrity who cultivates a persona and gets love, hate, indifference. But her fans have put her on this insanely high pedestal, and anyone who doesn’t worship along with them is a miserable hater, rather than just “not a fan”.

  9. InvaderTak says:

Well….um no. Not knowing you however, I think you think way too much of your own coolness.

  10. carol says:

Lol! That headline cracked me up! She looks gorgeous on the cover and layout (although as much as I love those bright colors, Elle always falls short in the styling department IMO). She bugs me less and less as she gets older too.

  11. kay says:

She and Swifty aren’t much different. Both still think like 15 year olds.

  12. Neah23 says:

    Dead eyes: check
    Open mouth: check
= A Kristen Steward photo shoot

  13. Hawkeye says:

Modeling suits her better than acting. I don’t find her compelling as actress but I love the way she photographs. I also find her interviews really grating because she misuses words and speaks nonsensically; sometimes I have no idea what she’s talking about or what she’s trying to say.

    • belle de jour says:

Dude, I literally, like, think I’d agree with you about that whole word thing, actually… you know?

      • Hawkeye says:

        Hahahahaha, Kristen? Is that you?

      • belle de jour says:

Watch it, Hawkeye, or I will get sullen, bite my lip, roll my eyes and wax inarticulate. Then I will blow up my whole comment just to watch it burn. Because I’m a badass, and because that will show you how much I don’t care.

You only think you know who I am. I’m a work in progress. And really complex. Got it?

      • Hawkeye says:

Okay, I’ll only stick to questions about your Craft. I appreciate that you are an Artiste and Very Artistique.

      • belle de jour says:

Cool. Now I can hang with you. You get me.

Wanna dress alike, run out for some coffee and act annoyed at the paps? It f*ckin’ sucks they don’t they make simple coffee makers that complicated artists can make work in their own home. But that would be too easy. And I don’t do easy.

Come on (what’s the opposite of an exclamation point again?) Let’s go. It’ll be so un fun. And ironic.

      • Hawkeye says:

Yes, this is the business. What should I wear? I don’t own any tight pants and everything else is clean.

      • belle de jour says:

You still clean your clothes? You are so like double-reverse retro real, man. And I totally f*ckin’ respect that.

Don’t sweat it. I’ve got a greasy trucker hat you can wear backwards and nobody’ll notice that your jeans fit. Roll up the hipster hem over your ‘verse kicks and we’re cool.

(Does this mean we’re sort of serious enough to get meaningful, tortured art tattoos in the same general body places? No pressure, dude, just putting that out there.)

      • Hawkeye says:

I’ll bring a jar of coconut oil to the tattoo parlour so we can match appropriately for the pap photos we try to avoid. I can call them if you give me the number; I assume you don’t have a phone.

I have a good idea for a tattoo! Someone read me this quote “I think, therefore” said by some Des Cart guy. He is deep.

      • belle de jour says:

I DO have a phone prop, smartass, to pull out when I wanna say FU or shoot a bird to paps and look like I’m doing something more important instead. Avoidance ninja here. Agent’s idea.

Wait… WTF… do the buttons on it actually, like, work? What is ‘speed dial’? What is TMZ? Why is my phone buzzing and shit right now? Is this social media? It sucks. F*ck that.

Oh, yeah, the ink. Cogito ergo scowl. Already there right under my scalp, because I’m pretty upfront about thinking deep stuff and want everybody else to back off of what’s on my mind. Acting has to be really honest to be real, you know?

We can think up another one to do together, though. I think.

      • Hawkeye says:

@belle du jour I think your comment is the perfect place to say “and scene.” 🙂

    • Tiny Martian says:

It’s okay for KStew to be incoherent now that Emma Watson was labeled “the voice of her generation” on the Sept. Vogue UK. So now Emma can speak for Kristen!

  14. Jules says:

No, Stewie…STILL don’t think you’re cool and STILL DO think you’re a lousy actress.

  15. Ms. Turtle says:

On the Taylor swift thread today someone pointed out that she’s a twenty something who desperately cares what others think while trying to seem confident in her own skin. This is SO true of Kristen too.

  16. Tig says:

Pls God, no to anything American Ultra- unless it involves Connie Britton and Topher Grace. I guess the decision has been made somewhere that any and all photoshoots of her have to involve 55 lbs of eyemakeup. Agree- it is pretty standard for her shoots.

  17. Josephine says:

I wish that she and the media would stop trying to put the “bad-*ss” label on her. What the heck is hard-edged about a privileged kid of the industry who has led a sheltered life?

I think for a child star, she’s avoided the common pitfalls, and that’s great. But to label her as particularly unique or tough is unwarranted.

  18. belle de jour says:

It usually takes a really skilled, well-trained and gifted journalist to coax something original or complex or more thoughtful or better stated out of many celebs – especially when the celebs are understandably weary & leery of the process. But I’ll never understand why more managers and agents don’t take training for this part of the job more seriously – and arm their clients with creative ways to make the interview newsworthy and useful – no matter the nature of the questions.

  19. Lu says:

She kind of looks keanu reeves in that first pic circa 1985.

  20. imou says:

Same expression on the photos. Waoh she is soooo a good actress!
Please stop articles about her! She is so boring.
Ans On the video, we can see the bags under the eyes! Thank you Photoshop !

  21. Angelica says:

She looks like Matt Bellamy with a wig in the first pic. I been trying to figure it out all morning!

  22. PI says:

Love this girl. She takes a great photo. And yes, she can act. I am not familiar with Twilight but have seen her in other things.

  23. AntiSocialButterfly says:

    So, so very much meh.

  24. Sasha says:

    She’s very beautiful.

  25. Corrie says:

I feel like they’re run out of acronyms for her so Badass is overused. out of the box, individual, unique, self accessed. But badass… maybe but not this much. And i find it lazy-speak. Anyway – I don’t like this shoot. I agree Kaiser, she looks messy and dirty as a look is again over done and she’s prettier than this and stop putting her in old 30-something work clothes dressed in the woods. Sorry, this is tired.

  26. Div says:

Terrible photo shoot. She’s a pretty girl, but this is not a great photo shoot and that “meh” factor is amplified by the fact that she just did a great photo shoot for Marie Claire. The comment about being cool if you know her was in response to a question about her bitch face, so I think people are over-analyzing it just a tad. Just seems like a throwaway sentence to say “I’m not really that grumpy.” To be honest, I wish women would stop feeling like they had to apologize or defend themselves for not smiling because men never get called out for having resting bitchface. I hope she ups her fashion game for the Venice film festival red carpet, and I’d like premiere photos for American Ultra to see both her and Connie. There needs to be more Connie Britton always 🙂
