Richard Madden shades ‘unprofessional, ungrateful’ Cara Delevingne

wenn22557149

In July, Cara Delevingne was on the last leg of the neverending promotional tour for Paper Towns, and she had gotten up early to do satellite interview with various local morning shows. One of those outlets was Good Day Sacramento. Maybe Cara had been up late partying, maybe she’s not a morning person, or maybe she’s just an unprofessional brat, but she was very rude and unpleasant during the brief morning interview, like she couldn’t believe that these perky morning show people dared to ask her simple questions about her film. After she was widely criticized (after the clip went viral), Cara tried to play it off as dumb Americans not understanding her dry British wit.

That’s the background for this absolutely hilarious #hottake on Cara from Richard Madden, also known as Robb Stark on Game of Thrones, also known as the Prince in the live-action version of Cinderella. Madden was asked about Cara’s Good Day Sacramento interview and he was amazingly candid:

“It was unprofessional. It made her seem ungrateful. She showed her age. For Cinderella, I did six weeks of those interviews, where you get asked the same eight questions. If you’re not capable of doing that gracefully, then don’t do it.”

[From Us Weekly]

None of which is a lie. All of which is just his opinion, just a guy mouthing off to a reporter, although I might feel that way because I agree with him. So here’s what happened next: Cara found him on Twitter and bitched at him.

“I have no idea who you are…” He’s the guy you just looked up on Twitter as soon as he bad-mouthed you. Also: I’m absolutely positive that Madden and Cara run in similar circles in London. It would be my guess that they have many friends in common. “I think it’s little desperate for a grown man to be bad mouthing someone they don’t know…” Almost like she’s assuming a child-like victim stance. She’s 23. She’s a dumb kid without actually being a “kid.” Anyway, Madden responded to her:

Horsesh-t. If you’re going to bad-mouth someone, stick to your guns.

He handled it the best way possible…apologized & diffused.

    • Franca says:

Yeah, and it just made her seem even worse.

She’s so immature and spoiled. I’m a year younger than her and can’t imagine acting like that. I know she had a rough childhood, but still.

Also, has anyone seen the Vogue video with her sister Poppy? She sounds liek a child and is almost 30. It must run in the family.

    • mom2two says:

This. I wish he stood behind his comments (I like what someone on here said, we need to know the difference between constructive criticism and bullying) too, but his response is the best one to give so this non-story can go away.

I am going to admit my bias. I love me some Richard Madden, he’s my Hiddleston/Cumberbatch and when I read his comments about her, I watched the interview to see what he was talking about. He was right. She starts off rude and dismissive and looking like she’d rather have a root canal. I don’t care if they got her name wrong, all she needed to do was politely correct them and move on. The chat show hosts were polite to her but when she kept with the attitude, they turned on her….and that is where they went wrong. She was unprofessional and by the end of it, so were the chat show folks.

Cara’s response to him (I don’t know who you are but let me seek you out on twitter) proved his point about her in spades.

      • Jenny says:

I agree with you completely, mom2two.

Also funny she wrote that she has no idea who he is, I have no idea who she is, but now I at least know I never want to support her by seeing any of her films.

    • khaveman says:

He wins, hands down. Even though his press agent probably told him to backpedal. He said it and we all know what he said is spot-on. Just DO the press stuff, Cara. It’s part of the process of doing a movie and being famous these days. It’s pretty simple.

    • polonoscopy says:

I don’t think he did. I’m pretty tired of celebrities acting like journalism works like that robot in Terminator 2… that they can just take on Richard Madden form and invent quotes for him live on the air. We all heard you. We all agreed with you. Stick to your guns and your integrity please.

  2. Evasmom says:

Ugh, no kidding Kaiser. Just f#&÷*£* own it. “Yes, I meant you are a spoiled twat, grow up.”

    • Kori says:

I’m not going to criticize him for just diffusing the situation but at the same time that response would’ve been hysterical. (And pretty spot-on)

      • sofia says:

He should’ve said “This nobody was asked a question and gave his opinion. Why do you care? Goodbye.”

  3. paola says:

Robb I really liked you in GoT but how is this any of your business?
The hosts on that tv program were condescending vile bullies towards Cara and as professionals, tbey should be ashamed of themselves.
I’m not a fan of hers but it seems like they were judging her on her spoilt little brat status while how she arrived where she is, whcih is none of their business to judge.

    • Luca76 says:

      Exactly this!

    • mom2two says:

He was asked about it in an interview. Why an interviewer would ask him is beyond me.

    • Hannah says:

Well her reaction showed she’ IS a spoilt little brat, quite a bitchy tantrum there. She could have just ignored it.
The whole you want attention and especially ” focus on your “work is ridiculous considering he’s a way more seasoned actor than her. She hangs around with kardashian and other celebrities and she’s acted for about 5 minutes. And she calls him desperate for attention? Her whole social circle is desperate for attention. The irony is off the charts!

      • bellenola says:

        YES.

      • sofia says:

If he is a nobody why did she lose her time finding him on twitter and message him? Maybe he should not have given an answer but it must be annoying seeing someone doing the same job, knowing the challenge and embracing it while another one just gets all precious about it and then complains.

      • JennaR says:

This! Thank you!! Plus, if you look at their Wikipedia pages, his is filled with information about his studies like graduating from Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and his career accomplishments. Hers is filled with the names of her rich relatives. Ugh.

    • Bridget says:

Eh. They asked and he answered. He’s allowed to have an opinion.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Thank you. Everyone is so PC and easily offended anymore, as if we can’t have an opinion on anything.

      • sofia says:

What’s beyond me is why should she care if he is a nobody to her? Maybe Cara should come to celebitchy and get mad at us too.

      • FLORC says:

        Sofia
        This all day.

All her reaction displays is a bratty nature.
And “Madden” made me think of those awful shoes that I love the styling, but never fail to be impossible to walk in.

  4. Not Sorry says:

She ‘doesnt know who he is’ but speaks about watching GoT’s – keep it consistent kid. Her film career hasnt taken off and shes fallen out with the model world, the desperate is starting to show through. Money can only buy you so much, talent isnt one of them.

  5. celine says:

I can’t stand her and honestly, I don’t know what the big fuss about her is about. Nowadays you’re considered “it” if you have x amount of instagram followers. Entitled brat.

  6. Watcher says:

Ugh. I’m not defending Cara in general, she does come across as a brat most of the time, this tantrum over Richard’s comments a case in point. However, I’ll defend her all day over that Good Morning Sacramento interview. The journalist got her name wrong and they were all very pass-agg throughout. THEY were the rude, unprofessional ones.

    • Nude says:

I watched only the first few minutes and I thought they were kowtowing to her like crazy. She seemed really jetlagged or something. This twitter thing is immature (Cara), but they’re both getting a good deal of PR from it.

    • Allie says:

I have to disagree. Sure, those journalists got her name wrong, but the correct thing to do was to act graciously, even in the face of rudeness. I can’t believe people are still defending her. When my customers/clients are rude and nasty, I don’t act the same. I’ll pout about it
afterwards. They were her customers. We are her customers. They asked her boring questions, yes. But they ask everybody boring questions. It was a morning talk show, not a hard hitting news show.

Also, now I don’t like him. This shows he doesn’t have balls to stand up for himself.

      • Lulu says:

I guess you missed the part where they trashtalked her after the live connection was cut off?

      • Allie says:

@LuLu Nope, I saw it. They were jerks. But that was after the interview, as you said. So, what was her excuse prior? I’m not saying the interviewers were anything but rude and unprofessional but come on. Sometimes you just have to be gracious and professional, even when you don’t want to be. So they said her name wrong and asked her if she even read the book. Hard stuff, it’s called being an adult.

      • MrsB says:

I agree @allie. It showed her privilege. Somebody who fought tooth and nail to have a career in Hollywood, to get any part in a movie, would NEVER act the way she did in the same situation. She just doesn’t appreciate her position as much as she should.

      • Hannah says:

        Spot on MrsB

      • sofia says:

Independently of the questions, actors are responsible by their own reactions and answers. If anything happens they are the ones who will look bad and there are ways to stand up for yourself with a smile. She pretty much made it worse. She could’ve made a joke out of it when they asked if she read the book. Even with her name, she could’ve corrected them with a joke. She is young but she needs to understand that she is working.

  7. Maya says:

Got nothing to say except he has gorgeous blue eyes and would have made a brilliant Beast in the live animation of Beauty & The Beast.

    • Nude says:

He also has extremely white teeth from what I saw in Cinderella. He was the perfect Prince Charming.

      • mom2two says:

He was. I think he would have made a good Beast too. I can’t wait to see what Dan Stevens does with the role.

  8. Seszie says:

    He’s really really hot. Wow.

  9. Norman Bates' Mother says:

Even though I don’t like her, I was on her side after that interview incident, because those interviewers were acting like obnoxious morons (and I still think they were worse than her), but she lost me with this reply. She sounds exactly what I expected her to sound like – a spoiled, entitled, out-of-touch brat. The “I have no idea who you are…” part implies that a peasant like him shall not dare to talk publicly about her “famous and accomplished” self and it’s only one step before bringing up the “Don’t you know who I am?!” card. Pretty high on the entitlement scale. I’m surprised she didn’t make the entire TS-friend -collection jump on Madden just yet. I don’t know why he even felt like commenting about her in the first place (was he asked about her specifically?), but she only proved his point with that reply.

Annie Clarke, what are you doing with that forever-child?

    • Kori says:

The interesting thing is that, depending on who you’re talking to, more people may know his name (or at least his face) then hers. I know my husband and 20 yr old daughter both know the actor who played Robb Stark and my 13 yr old knows who he is from Cinderella (and has a huge crush) and have no idea who Cara is–and my 13 yr old saw Paper Towns. (She loves John Green) People who follow gossip sites like this one or are into fashion or reading the Daily Mail may know her but I doubt Joe Shmo out there does whereas Game of Thrones is huge in one (worldwide) audience and Cinderella was a big hit with another. Richard Madden could comfortably attend conventions the rest of his life, way past Cara’s ‘sell by’ date.

    • Kitty says:

He was flat out asked about her specificly, yes

  10. InvaderTak says:

Well they both came across as lame. She proved his point, and then he backed down like a fool. Useless people are useless.

  11. lisa2 says:

people don’t like her.. fine.. but why is he even talking about it. It had nothing to do with him. If they were in a film together or on the show.. then fine.. but mind your own business. I saw that interview and maybe she didn’t handle it well; but the interviews on the show had an agenda. They started it by being unprofessional and shady. They thought they were being cleaver about it but it was clear they were trying to be snarky.

He should handle his own business and stay out things that don’t apply to him. His reply shows that he was trying to get attention by riding the wave of someone else’s drama

    • Kitty says:

He was asked in an interview his opinion. He’s allowed to have one

      • lisa2 says:

        Obviously; :/

but now he’s backtracking. I guess he is allowed to do that too. And here’s the kicker.. maybe he and others should say that it’s none of my business and has nothing to do with me.

  12. dr mantis toboggan says:

There’s a difference between bullying and constructive criticism. I think a lot of kids these days would be wise to learn that

  13. Betti says:

Have never liked her – she’s an attention seeking brat and her 5 mins are over. I agree with him that she was unprofessional but he should have stuck to his guns are called her out on it but i guess he didn’t want the press backlash and inevitable twitter war with this twat. She would have milked it for all it was worth.

He was calling a spade a spade. Cara get over yourself your ‘acting’ career is going nowhere as u can’t act. Stick to modelling for Topshop.

  14. Nude says:

She looks good in photos when she’s glammed up but on film, she’s the kookiest looking person ever. I saw her in the Michael Winterbottom film with Kate Beckinsale and she’s very, very weird looking. Reminds me of the Rugrats cartoon.

  15. Size Does Matter says:

Why would they ask him about that incident directly? Weird.

He’s so hot, but from what I recall Sacramento got her name wrong. I’d be hard pressed to be gracious under the circumstances.

    • Betti says:

Others have – Benedict Cumbercatch handled it all quite well when people have struggled to pronounce his name correctly. Its called professionalism.

  16. Crocuta says:

Eh. Loved his first response, think it’s OK for her to stand up for herself, hated his second response. Chicken. Also, misquoted? The most overused word in Hollywood by celebrities who regret not keeping their mouth shut.

  17. MonicaQ says:

This is why I could never be in Hollywood. I’d be like, “Yeah I said it. I was asked about it and gave my opinion. What now?”

    • sofia says:

That’s what he should’ve said. “If you don’t know who I am, why do you care?” Or “You just proved my point. Bye” She needs to face her own attitude, she will only attract interview drama if she keeps like this.

    • I Choose Me says:

Right? I hate back pedaling. Own your sh*t.

  18. Hazel says:

    Dear Caterpillarbrows Lady,
Your recent tweet just proves my quote was not taken out of context. Also, Winter is Coming.
    Yours Truly,
    Robb Stark

  19. mia girl says:

“I have no idea who you are…”

What most people will be saying to Cara in a few years.

  20. Talie says:

Oh, please… she absolutely knows who he is. But I do think she’s right. Just cause someone asks, doesn’t mean you have to answer.

    • mom2two says:

Someone linked a tweet of hers from April 2013 saying how good the latest episode of GoT was. Guess who was still on the show at that time?

    • Kitty says:

Unless you have an opinion, then you have the right to answer

    • sofia says:

Why shouldn’t he answer? There are ways and ways to answer, but he was not disrespectful. She can’t handle criticism? He had a point and I think we can all agree that press tours are work. Is she goung to tweet film critics whenever she doesn’t like a critic from them too?

  21. Ronda says:

The King in the North should not trouble his mind with lowborn women.

  22. Jenns says:

Instead of bitching him out, she should’ve tweeted him a picture of Roose Bolten.

  23. It'sJustBlanche says:

She seems like a brat and the live action version of Cinderella is fantastic. It’s a classic and kids we watching it for years. He’s almost too pretty, though.

  24. enya says:

By the time I clicked “play” on that video, I expected to find Cara a screechy hot mess, but after watching, I gotta say, I feel the exact opposite. The white male host was a complete jackass. “You seemed so much more excited [in an earlier interview] than you do now”???? I can understand why Cara’s repeated joke answers before her real answers (“no, I didn’t read the book or the script,” “no, I’m nothing like the character” –I’m paraphrasing) could be offputting, but I don’t think anything Cara said or did warranted the hosts’ attitudes. The HOSTS were unprofessional and rude. And the way they all piled on afterward was unbelievable. “Go take a nap and get a Red Bull”? After she responded to a direct insult with a laugh and a serious answer? No. I’m totally Team Cara here.

    • lisa2 says:

I’m glad you brought up how the host had an attitude. I don’t think some of the people posting even saw the video or viewed it objectively. They don’t like her so of course they go with the negative take.

I don’t understand why he was asked about her and why he even responded. You don’t have to give an opinion on everyone you are asked about.

  25. Greenieweenie says:

Eh, I watched the videos and thought the news anchors needled her. I think the man was especially patronizing–he was going for a reaction. She was being professional about it and he was all, “you seem low energy.” That would piss me off. I hate strangers who feel qualified to comment on your state of mind like they know you. Never understood the fuss over this but I don’t have an impression of Cara one way or another.

  26. Esteph says:

IMO, I think you are right Kaiser about someone sticking to their guns. He said what he felt, she acted like a woman-child, it shows via her tweets, and so she should own that.

  27. Ickythump says:

So she once tweeted “ugh the new game of thrones is soooooo good” but has no idea who he is? Sure Cara.

  28. Hannah says:

Madden is from a small town in Scotland his dad is a fireman, his mum is classroom assistant. He studied acting at the royal Scottish academy of drama. A very good school. He Comes from a normal family and has proffesional acting training. In other words he couldn’t be more different from Cara. i can totally see why he would call her out he’s just saying what many actors would be thinking.
She does her first press tour, and is already getting pissed off. She’s not the first one to encounter irritating or condescending talk show hosts. So many actors with better pedigree would kill to get the chances she has gotten.

  29. leah says:

Her response was very unpleasant. She shades him as unimportant because he isn’t as famous as she and her friends ( Taylor swift and kardashians). As if the only reason people would object to her behaviour is if they are jealous of her fame.
It shows where she is coming from. Fame equals importance to her. She doesnt respect people just for their work.

  30. pleaseicu says:

Smack talking fellow industry members on a matter that has nothing to do with them and months after it’s over isn’t exactly the height of class and professionalism either. And does he have an issue with male celebrities that act like spoiled brats in interviews? Because there have been some fine examples of big male celebs showing their behinds in interviews this year.

Used to love him. But I’m a bit disappointed in him lately given his some of his answers during the Lady Chatterley’s Lover press rounds. He came across like a bit of a haughty judgey jerk speaking from (and oblivious to) his own privilege. He was apparently the only actor at a recent con demanding special treatment and demanded his own private room. So it seems he’s kind of become a spoiled brat himself lately. Richard and Cara probably cancel each other out in the spoiled, privileged brat race.

    • mom2two says:

I don’t know what else he said during Lady Chatterley press that was jerky, can’t say I read it all. But I do know the con you are talking about and he was not the only one to have a private room. So did Jenna Coleman and the assumption was since they were the two biggest guests there, it was done for space (as they would have more people for their autos and pics). And people who worked with him at the con said he was nice as did fans who met him.

      • Kori says:

He and Jenna Coleman are a long time couple as well–though I think they may have broken up. She was with him at the Cinderella photocalls (and her former coworker Matt Smith is the boyfriend of Cinderella herself, Lily James so it was a Dr Who/Game of Thrones/Downton Abbey mashup)

      • mom2two says:

@kori, yes they are/were a long time couple. I think they got back together. They were spotted on a couple of London dates not too long ago. The con was at Blackpool, which is her hometown.

    • Hannah says:

What privilege? He’s a son of a fireman. He worked to get where he is. You cannot compare him to Cara. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth.
Either way I don’t think it counts as smack talking, it’s calling a spade a spade when asked.

  31. A.Key says:

I may be biased because he’s so gorgeous, but she just sounds like a conceited spoiled bitch.

  32. jammypants says:

    can this broad disappear already?

  33. thaisajs says:

Oh please. He wasn’t misquoted. He said something perfectly reasonable, she got her knickers in a knot and he lied to try to diffuse the situation. Lame.

  34. j.eyre says:

Did anyone else get a little sleepy reading their interaction?

  35. Penelope says:

The hosts of that Sacramento program were condescending, snotty, and unbelievably rude to Cara. Did this guy even watch the interview he’s slamming her for?

  36. emma says:

meh… he’s right. If she wants to give up the modeling game and be an actress, she’s going to have to answer many many dumber questions than that.

  37. babyb says:

found the only person who -despite being “famous”- been living in a bubble under a rock. rob stark. “no idea who you are?” then why respond? please…… spoiled brat

  38. Heat says:

SHE doesn’t know who HE is? Come down off your high horse, honey…that’s Robb Prince-Charming Effing Stark you’re talking about!

He should not have back-peddled; he wasn’t bashing her, just stating some constructive facts. Bratty-baby take note.

  39. Josefa says:

The other day I dared to reply to this awful bigot on facebook, who wrote something incredibly disrespectful and bigoted against lesbians. He replied with 3 paragraphs of nonsense. I replied back. He replied with other 3 paragraphs, using much more brass and insulting language. I gave up and said he was right about everything.

Cara’s fanbase consists of teenage girls, the most social-media happy segment of humanity. If you think Cara’s response was immature I don’t even wanna know what her fans wrote. So I really can’t blame Richard for telling her exactly what she wanted. I wouldn’t want to be involved in that kind of twitter drama either.

    • EM says:

But who is he, in the scheme of things to say something this late in the piece? Is he an actor with decades of experience? No. He is known for one TV show, was killed off a couple of seasons back and the world hasn’t heard from him since then and now, he speculates that by saying something, it’ll be picked up on Twitter and it will throw him some attention that his ego has been lacking.
In other countries in the world, her interviews didn’t have any issues. She wasn’t treated like a brat from the outset or anything similar and the interviews were quite pleasant.
To base her character on one interview – and a crappy one [on both sides, especially the journalists who didn’t factor in the time delay] – isn’t accurate.

  40. Marianne says:

I absolutely agreed with Richard and kind of hate that he backtracked.

She was being professional. i could understand shutting down the reporters if they were asking something really personal or saying something really racist, but weren’t they just asking her if she read the book beforehand. Like F off Cara.

  41. Doc says:

horses**t should make a grand comeback as a swearword. so suitable in this instance too.

  42. Mrs. Darcy says:

I agreed her interview was a car crash and she was ganged up on, but I also think she is an entitled brat who really doesn’t have much gratitude for being a film actress , in fact moaning about having to be a model for all of a few years to get where she is. She was awkward as f**k on Graham Norton, incapable of just acting like a normal human (a little…erm….spaced too). I would have respected Madden more if he stuck to his guns tbh. Her bratty little response does show her true colours I think.

  43. EM says:

It’s quite typical to return with ‘sorry I was misquoted’.
Yes that interview was a car crash, but there are other interviews that aren’t. I watched her being interviewed by the Project panel in Australia [where she appeared on the panel] and she wasn’t a brat at all. So people should consider the whole context before labelling someone.
If a celebrity is difficult in most interviews, then yes.
I’d say Harrison Ford has to be one of the worst celebrities to interview. He isn’t pleasant, he responds in a patronising manner – like it’s the interviewer’s fault for existing to interview him – when someone should tell him that he would not have had a career had it not been for publications publicising his work. He isn’t the greatest actor in the world, and many of these unpleasant celebrities [like Bruce Willis] aren’t.
But I’m with Cara on this one. It’s not about his identity per se, but who is he to come forth and make a judgment? Like coming out of nowhere, so late in the piece, to snipe.
Fact of the matter: His character got killed off early in the piece and that’s pretty much it. Work on your own career, mate.
It’s like he is relying on his Twitter comment to her, to be picked up [and it has] for additional attention, because he hasn’t been in the public eye since GoT – and that was ages ago in terms of actor time.

  44. Sarah says:

He looks so much better with facial hair

  45. moo moo says:

The interviewers on the sacramento morning show were the ones who were unprofessional.

  46. serena says:

She doesn’t know who he is? BS! Does she live under a rock or what? What an idiot, can’t even take criticism.

  47. GoLightly says:

Honestly, no one would know or care who SHE was outside of England if she hadn’t been rammed down our throats for over a year by her PR people. I have a vague memory of her in a story about accidentally dropping her little baggie of Coke in front of some London paps, a magazine layout she did with Tom Hiddleston, her eyebrows on Graham Norton, and stories from her publicity tour. I think that’s more than I need to know about yet another seemingly spoiled, shallow, and ungrateful celebutante.
