Helena Bonham Carter: Not all successful relationships have a ‘forever after’

helena red

Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton announced their split last Christmas Eve. It was depressing, because if Tim Burton and HBC can’t make it work, there really is no hope left in the world. As it turned out, Burton might have been going through a mid-life crisis thing where he already had a younger jumpoff (a production assistant) on the side. It was messy, but HBC and Burton didn’t air their laundry publicly so the stories died after a few weeks. Now, months later, Helena is talking about the split a little bit with Red Magazine (she’s promoting Suffragette).

Her split with Tim Burton: “I could write a thesis on what’s happened and it is all-absorbing when a relationship breaks down, but I think we’re coming through it. I think we’ll have something very precious still. Our relationship was always somewhat special, and I think it’ll always remain special. We did find each other. And really, the mark of a successful relationship shouldn’t be whether you’re there forever after. Sometimes you’re not meant to be forever together. Sometimes you’re not meant to be forever together. Sometimes you have to come to terms with the fact that that was it. But that was a gift, a massive gift.”

Whether they lived together: “We gave each other children and a lot more else. And we might be better, and still be able to give to each other, but not necessarily living together. Everyone seemed to think we didn’t, but that was a load of myth.”

Turning 50 next year: “We’re getting dilapidated, but you can’t control that, so why worry? I’m more conscious of the kids’ childhood going, because that goes so fast, it’s a bit like watching one of those time lapses. There’s no pressing pause. You’ve just got to say goodbye all the time, but also say hello. You must remember to say hello. So I’m going to say hello to my 5-0 – because otherwise when I’m 60 I’ll be going, “Oh, you should’ve enjoyed your fifties.”’

[From The Daily Mail & People]

I believe her and I believe that she doesn’t have many hard feelings about what went down with Burton. I think the “I could write a thesis” is probably a reference to Burton’s jumpoff thing and perhaps she does have thoughts about him being such a mid-life crisis cliché, although to be fair to Burton, it’s not like he bought a hot rod and went on a nanny-banging binge with Ben Affleck. I agree with her sentiment about “the mark of a successful relationship shouldn’t be whether you’re there forever after.” Sometimes you can have a successful, fulfilling relationship and it just ends and that’s fine. Anyway, it doesn’t sound like she’s wallowing or throwing pity parties. She’s fine. She’s Helena Bonham Carter, for goodness sake.

That blue dress is everything on her.

    • zinjojo says:

Best she’s looked in ages, maybe ever.

    • Lama Bean says:

      Indeed it is.

      She looks great here.

    • frisbee says:

How refreshing not to hear a celebrity do the ‘poor ickle me’ thing for more press. She looks great and sounds remarkably sane, Tim Burton must be an idiot to walk away, I doubt he’ll find another one like her.

    • minx says:

She looks gorgeous and has a great attitude.

      • LA Juice says:

+!1 has always been a favorite of mine, since her turn in the mel gibson Hamlet as Ophelia. Definitely sad that Tim Burton turned out to be an AFFLECK (say it like the duck says AFLAC) I would choose Team HCB anyway. Burton seems to have lost his mojo when he lost her.

  2. lila fowler says:

Do we know for sure that Burton didn’t go on some PYT banging excursion? I don’t think he gets the same amount of press that Affleck does.

  3. Tash says:

    Wow, she never looked better!

  4. Sarah says:

She looks gorgeous. I love her.

  5. Lilacflowers says:

    Such a gorgeous woman

  6. HK9 says:

    Wow~she looks amazing!!

  7. Sarah01 says:

    She is classically beautiful.
I completely agree that some relationships have their time and it might not be forever after, i like her a lot she doesn’t try to be something’s she’s not. When I see pics of her picking or dropping off her kids to school she looks just like me and every other mom, I love that!

  8. mkyarwood says:

Wow, I want the number of her ‘dermatologist’.

    • Trashaddict says:

Um, yeah. Had a little work done there, dear? She may not be crying about her 50s but I think it’s because the plastic surgeon is laughing all the way to the bank.
      (I still like her though)

  9. Jag says:

    She’s terrific!

  10. tealily says:

So refreshing to hear something like this. It may not be good gossip, but it does make me feel like perhaps love is not completely dead after all.

  11. Εlle says:

Yeah, she’s amazing, she looks great but also… karma is a bitch, huh?

    • Kim says:

      Hi Elle ,
I was curious who you were referring to about karma. It was a while ago now, so I can’t remember the story correctly. Did you write that because he left his previous relationship to be with Helena?
Not a big Burton fan. I have this irrational dislike towards him for casting Depp in some of his stinkers. Well, I do have a soft spot for sleepy hollow..

    • trilby227 says:

Are you referring to the earlier situation with her and Kenneth Branagh?

    • frisbee says:

Emma Thompson, who was married to Kenneth Brannagha has long moved on from the whole business.
‘Miss Thompson said the break-up was ‘all blood under the bridge’, adding: ‘You can’t hold on to anything like that.
‘It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.”

    • Melanie says:

Yes it is. Burton had a fiancé, Lisa Marie, at the time he hooked up with Helena. Both Lisa Marie & Helena were cast in Planet of the Apes, and reports at the time said they were quite friendly with one another. Fast forward to the red carpet premiere of the movie, and Burton tells Lisa Marie to not show up. That’s basically how he broke up with her after 10 plus years together. Nice guy. I don’t think Helena is any better than him. She apparently likes unavailable men. I’m not surprised by the demise of this relationship.

  12. JenniferJustice says:

She is a truly beautiful woman. She makes me proud to age gracefully. It’s all about how we feel, 50 is just a number.

  13. A.Key says:

She’s so wise and intelligent, a real role model.

  14. daisyfly says:

    Man, she’s beautiful.

  15. Jayna says:

“Although to be fair, it’s not like he bought a hot rod and went on a nanny-banging binge like Ben Affleck.”

Banging your assistant, who has obviously been around the kids and Helena, and who apparently was a long-term affair, and caught out kissing here while still with the mother of your children? Oh, no, he’s much better than Ben. Why, again, is that?

    • karen2 says:

…plus as everyone is saying…once upon a time she was the jump-off…maybe he promised her to continue casting her in his movies…still with children involved one should always be civil…

  16. Nev says:

Lots of photo shop but great cover.

  17. Caitlin Bruce says:

Wow she looks absolutely stunning!! Love what she has to say aswell. Wonder if they will work together again?

  18. Polhillian says:

Will always adore her, she’s a brilliant actress.

My uncle briefly dated her in the 90s. Can I just say that in the flesh, no make up, unshowered in scruffy clothes she was (is) absolutey fucking gorgeous. And hilarious and sweet and lovely.

  19. Green Is Good says:

    Love is dead.;)
Thank GAWD she dumped Tim Burton. Don’t get me wrong, I watch “Ed wood” every other week, but Tim comes off a a total narcissist. Can you imagine living with that dick for 10 years?

  20. Green Is Good says:

Ps: her performance as Bellatrix LeStrange kills me! She made me root for that bad woman!

    • LAK says:

She was the stand out performance for me in entire HP series. Her ‘Bellatrix’ was exactly how bat shit crazy I imagined Bellatrix to be whilst reading the books.

Professor McGonagall (sp?) ) Hagrid were also beautifully realised. Everybody else was masterpiece theatre. It became annoying after awhile.

    • I Choose Me says:

Yes. I got chills in the movie when she started singing, I killed Sirius Black. She made the character of Bellatrix LeStrange a fully realised one.

  21. Jade says:

I love her and I adore the name Helena! Beautiful.

  22. Jaded says:

She’s utterly wonderful. I think I’ll go watch “A Room With a View” for the hundredth time now.

  23. alice says:

I guess her philosophy on relationships has to be on tune with the way she sees relationships in general: Kenneth Branagh cheated on Emma Thompson with Helena, so yeah I guess that she has to see the whole cheating thing with a little grain of salt. I like that she’s not playing the victim and not being an hypocrite after she was on the other end of the story some years ago.

    • Jayna says:

And Tim Burton left his long-time girlfriend and fiancee at the time that he was living with, Lisa Marie, for Helena. They had been together ten years and she had been in his movies. It was messy in that while she and Burton were together she and Helena were both in the Planet of the Apes movie, and she was friendly with Helena. She had no idea anything was going on between them. He dumped Lisa Marie after the movie was finished for Helena.

  24. Lindy says:

She’s been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. She’s so articulate and smart in addition to being a brilliant actor. I can’t love her more and the dresses in this shoot are perfection on her.

  25. raincoaster says:

I still have an old copy of Vogue with a photoshoot of her, one of her first big ones. It’s interesting to see how the stylists didn’t know what to do with her back then, nobody knew what to do with her hair, and the editors didn’t think she was beautiful; they put her in the magazine because she was socially well-connected and getting lots of buzz as an actress.

  26. Stephanie says:

She looks incredible. I so prefer it when she is styled like this. Beautiful, beautiful woman.

  27. Mary-Alice says:

Love her, always have. We share the same relationship philosophy. Life is change. People change, feelings change, sometimes the paths separate. It’all well, a journey. It’s still a precious part of life that has passed to be appreciated but there is also much to come to be anticipated. And I feel for the kids part and all the goodbyes and hallos we say each day. I watch the kids to school and wonder how many more goodbyes and hallos I will be lucky to say.

    • EN says:

Very true. Relationships are a journey. Plus, we don’t own anyone and can’t hold anyone against their will. What is gone is gone. No point to cry over it.

  28. Alice says:

Echoing what most everyone has said, she looks incredible! And she sounds so sensible.

  29. Granger says:

I love HBC and she is a beautiful woman, but those photos disturb me. They’ve made her look 30. In real life, she has wrinkles on her forehead and under-eye circles and lines around her mouth, like any woman her age.

  30. S says:

You lose ’em like you get ’em…..ever heard of Lisa Marie?

  31. kate says:

What a beautiful woman. In the Potter films especially, I find her stunning.
