Chris Rock announced to host the Oscars: will he offend Sean Penn again?

Yesterday, Chris Rock announced on Twitter that he would be hosting the Oscars again. He’s back! The last time this went down, it was 2005, and Rock’s humor in the show was considered offensive. Actually, it was just one joke that riled people up. Oh, scratch that too. Rock mainly irritated the heck out of Sean Penn, which is fine. More people should make a point of offending Penn. The joke revolved around Jude Law, who was the toast of Hollywood in 2005. He was all over the place in esteemed movies like I Heart Huckabees, Cold Mountain, and The Aviator. Plus stuff like Alfie. Rock decided to play clueless during his opening monologue:

“Who is Jude Law? Why is he in every movie I have seen in the last four years? Even if he’s not acting in it, if you look at the credits he makes the cupcakes or something … You want Tom Cruise and all you can get is Jude Law? Wait.”

Clearly, Rock was joking, and many hosts have told similar jokes at award shows since then. Remember when Ricky Gervais — right in front of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp — flat-out said that no one watched the The Tourist at the 2012 Golden Globes? That was much harsher joke. Yet Penn got onstage later on to present an award, and he said, “Forgive my lack of humor, Jude Law is one of our most talented actors.” At least he knows he’s humorless.

Well, I look forward to seeing Chris Rock host the heck out of the Oscars again. He’s sure to make the evening an eventful one, which is nice when you’re watching an awards show that runs far too long. Check out this Twitter exchange! I bet we’re going to hear a Sean Penn joke. Hahaha.

Chris Rock announced to host the Oscars: will he offend Sean Penn again?

    I hope so

  2. Franca says:

Chris Rock and Jon Stewart were my favourite Oscar hosts. I hope he makes it very politicall and offends every celebrity. We need a bit of entertainment after the fiasco that was Ellen or the boring sing-and-damce hosts.

    • Bae says:

Ellen was so awful. One of the worst hosts ever.

    • Esmom says:

Yes they speak the truth no matter how uncomfortable. It seems like Ellen should also be able to do that but at some point she decided just to play it safe. Always.

    • Neah23 says:

Ellen was not the last host that was Neil Patrick Harris so why are you talking about her? And why do you hope he offereds everyone?

      • Franca says:

Right, I forgot aboit NPH, he was that memorable.
I’m talking aboit Ellen because she was so awful. Painful to watch awful.
And it’s fun when sppiled celebrities get butthurt over tje slightest joke at their expense.

    • KaleIt says:

David Letterman was very dull but I don’t really get Chris Rock’s jokes. I think he IS very political, but Ricky Gervais would be funnier because he tells hollywood and not specifically political jokes.

  3. alice says:

I’m ok with Chris hosting and whomever is about nor being politically correct without being offensive. That’s the talent of a comedian: finding that balance.
About Penn: it seems to me that whenever he goes to the Oscars he NEEDS to do or say something controversial. This idiot LOVES the attention, more than any other poor attention seeker in Hollywood while on the other hand selling himself as a paparazzi hater and press shy.
Remember when he made the racist joke about Iñarritu last year? Remember when he got banned from the Governors Ball for making a jealousy ragging scene to Robin Wright’s producer boyfriend? And so and so….

  4. Elizabeth says:

Yes, please do offend Sean Penn. We should all offend Sean Penn every chance we get.

  5. Sara says:

Chris Rock is so, so sharp. He’s one of the brightest comedians around, even if I’m not a fan of his movies.

    • jugstorecowboy says:

But Down to Earth was so awesome! I watched it twice IN A ROW on TBS once!

I love Chris Rock, and no one should ever go easy on Sean Penn…

    • Msmlnp says:

I couldn’t agree with you more. He is a comedic genius but it is baffling to me how bad his movies are.

  6. MND says:

Nuts. I was hoping Lena Dunham was gonna host.

  7. littlemissnaughty says:

Well, they’re desperate, aren’t they? I mean they should be, the last few years were gruesome. I love Chris Rock and I hope he doesn’t dial it down one bit. Sean Penn is a crusty old raisin but by now everyone knows and I don’t think Rock is going to do what people expect anyway. He’s moved on from that joke, it was 2005 after all.

  8. mindydopple says:

TOP FIVE! if you haven’t watched it, please give it a chance, one of the more original comedies I’ve seen lately. I laughed out loud several times and I love Chris Rock. That is all.

  9. Viv says:

I love Chris Rock, he’s hilarious. He’ll make it irrevent, entertaining and interesting without any stomach churning ass kissing. As it should be. Chris is pure talent.

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I didn’t think that joke was offensive at all. I thought it was a backhanded compliment. Am I missing something?

    • Tiffany says:

You did not. Host during that time were all ass kissy and the host were telling them they were great. I will watch Chris Rock talk to drying paint, so the Oscars are great.

    • Fanny says:

The whole bit was about how actors like Jude Law aren’t real movie stars, and that Jude kept getting cast in tons of movies because a real star like Tom Cruise was unavailable. His line was to Hollywood that if you are making a movie and “all you can get is Jude Law” then you should “wait”.

As standup, it was incredibly funny and spot on. At the Academy Awards with Jude sitting right there, it was really mean and it really hurt his career. It kind of put right out in the open that the push to make Jude Hollywood’s next leading man hadn’t worked.

I’m absolutely fine with Chris Rock going after someone who deserves ridicule, like Sean Penn. But I hope he doesn’t rip apart decent people he just doesn’t think are good enough. That’s not supposed to be the purpose of the Academy Awards.

    • Josefa says:

Nope, you’re not. Sean was just being a hypersensitive humorless dick. There’s nothing I find more annoying in this world that people who get offended by jokes that were not even directed at them.

    • korra says:

Well Penn’s been to Iraq so he knows what he’s talking about.

  11. mia girl says:

Chris Rock is good choice. Although I thought the new Oscar producers said there would be multiple hosts. Maybe more to come?

Can we add Ricky Gervais? I always loved him as the host of the Globes. He had zero f*cks to give about any of the celebrities in the room. Brilliant.

    • Louisa says:

I was so hoping for Ricky Gervais this year. He even hinted at it on his FB page so I’m really disappointed it’s not.

    • Josefa says:

Oh God no. Everyone but Ricky Gervais. I like offensive cut-throat humor, but he’s always just striked me as a douchebag with an inflated ego. He’s like a more adult version of a twitter troll who thinks he’s so clever and funny because he’s being offensive. I actually discovered him through twitter (my friends love him and retweeted him all the time) and I thought he was just a troll famous account. I later found out he’s an actual celeb.

We all have a celeb or 2 we just irrationally detest. Ricky Gervais is mine.

  12. OverFirstAve says:

I am in the minority I know but I just don’t find Chris Rock funny.

  13. Hannah says:

I love him! He’s so funny and intelligent!

  14. Lucy says:

    Oooooh, this will be fun!!

  15. I Choose Me says:

Chris Rock brings the funny in his stand up. His movies, not so much. But if he’s hosting the Oscars, I actually might watch.

  16. Josefa says:

Unpopular Opinion: I thought Ellen and NPH were decent. Not rofl-funny or sharp, but they made me giggle and weren’t annoying. They were dissapointing, but not bad.

Chris sounds like a good option and I hope he doesn’t dissapoint.

    • Lurker says:

NPH was awkward and the jokes were so lame. Not his fault the jokes sucked, though. I like NPH.

      • vavavoom says:

I found NPH to be inclusive. Pretentious .. only the people in the room really got the jokes .. He performed for the celebrities, not the viewers. I used to like him, but he really rubbed me the wrong way as host. I thought he was so arrogant.

  17. Mitchie says:

I really enjoyed Seth MacFarlane as host. His whole skit with William Shatner was hilarious, especially the sock puppet thing. And him trying to get it on with Sally Field backstage, was really cute. And say what you will, the man can sing!

    • Katija says:

Oh God, thank you. I thought I was the only one.

He has a sexy SPEAKING VOICE, too. He’s a fairly handsome man, not GORGEOUS, but that voice takes him to like, an 11.

    • vavavoom says:

I loved him too! I was surprised at the bad reviews afterwards!

    • GlimmerBunny says:

I liked Seth MacFarlane too! And NPH. Ellen was terrible tho.

  18. Tacos and TV says:

Sean Penn has a Sean Penn sized Stuck up his Sean Penn!

Chris Rock is gold. I just bought his Never Scared stand up and was in tears (the laughing induced kind. Not the sads kind) and Just adore this man. Hey! Now that he’s hosting, maybe I’ll actually watch it 🙂

  19. Katija says:

I like Sean Penn because he’s the one that conservatives and liberals can both come together and agree on. Like we can all find unity in the fact that we all think he’s a douche. He should be at the presidential debates. Like, “Dr. Carson, Senator Sanders, this is getting too heated. Let’s pause and talk about how much we all hate this douche for a minute so that we can find some common ground.” 🙂

  20. mire usted! says:

Yes! Chris Rock is hosting? Now I have a reason to watch the Oscars! I wonder if he’ll make a joke about the Finding Your Roots scandal. I hope so! BTW, Chris was on the show and I remember he cried about learning of his ancestor who was a former slave who served in the Colored Troops during the Civil War. Chris was shocked and proud. It was so touching.

I’m so glad the show is coming back. It’s unfortunate that episode is being removed. Ben Jealous is on it too.
