Duchess Kate in Tabitha Webb for a daytime movie premiere: cute or basic?

I’m sorry, I totally forgot this was happening. It really was announced in advance, I just A) forgot about it and B) didn’t really understand what the event was/is. Today, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry attended the day-time London premiere of Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas. Obviously, it’s a kids’ movie and it was made by a British animated team.

For the event, Kate wore something new! SHOCKING! We haven’t had a repeat in a while, so we’re due for one, possibly at the big Spectre premiere tonight (we’ll have those photos tomorrow). Kate’s dress is by Tabitha Webb, and I believe this is the first time Kate has worn something from Webb. The dress costs £375 (approximately $575). Would you buy this dress for nearly $600? I would not. But I do appreciate the fact that she’s mixing it up a little bit with her style. And at the end of the day, I’m just grateful that she’s not wearing a miniskirt.

As for her hair… yeah. People are saying that she’s growing out the bangs and that she’s filled with regret for ever attempting them. I’m not so sure. Her hair/wiglets/etc are such a security blanket for her, it wouldn’t surprise me if she kept some shaggy fringe around her face for months to come.

Kate also got to play with some of the live-animation via a greenscreen. Kensington Palace posted this video on their Twitter.

  1. Deedee says:

Ugh, her posture is just so bad. Why is she hiding under all that hair?

    • candice says:

The constant hand clasping in front of her crotch makes it worse because it rounds her shoulders…

    • Franca says:

She seems very insecure, and that’s a very hard thing to change.

      • realitycheck says:

It can be changed with being hard working and having a more productive life. But I’m not sure if it’s in het nature to do any of that.

      • Franca says:

Eh, I’m not sure. I know people who are incredily hard working and competent in their life, but having to walk in front of a crowd would be a huge challenge because they are insecure about their looks.

      • moomoo says:

Maybe she doesn’t want to seem arrogant. She is subject to so much criticism that she may just want to show that she’s down to earth.

When I was a young adult I underwent a sudden transformation in both my face and body. I gained frequent attention from both classmates and older men for this but I was still the same geeky person inside. I didn’t want anyone to think I felt better than others due to my luck-of-the-draw appearance and my posture showed this.

A few people suggested I put my shoulders back to “look more confident,” but I felt like others (especially women) would see that as me being arrogant (or even just wanting to show off my breasts), which I definitely was not. So I stuck with the crappy posture and only later realized that it was a superficial indicator of deeper confidence issues AND it can lead to neck and shoulder pain later.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

If she would be more competent at the job she is supposed to do then she might gain confidence. But I think she thinks she can’t achieve anything with the work she does and therefore she doesn’t really deeply care.

      • notasugarhere says:

Pondering, do you think Harry has accomplished nothing with WWTW, Invictus Games, and Sentebale?

They have the ability to accomplish a great deal. She chooses not to.

      • Natalie says:

This is a woman who strutted her stuff for the photographers when she and William got back together in 2007, and she was in her element standing on the balcony on her wedding day . I think she’s always been insecure but Kate used to be so much better at hiding it.

I really don’t like the dress. Kate is a rail and yet that dress is somehow unflattering.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ notasugarhere

I agree, Royals could achieve things. But I didn’t write about Harry but solemly about Kate. Harry seems to have achieved some. But Kate didn’t nor does she achieve anything and it doesn’t look as if she is going to achieve anything because: no interest, no work, no passion, no clues …

      • Addison says:

I agree on that. My manager is really good at her job, she does well directing meetings and attending events. But if she is asked to speak she is a nervous wreck. She is in her late 50’s so I don’t think that is going to change for her. I think with more time Kate can improve on this the more appearances she has. This may be the reason she doesn’t go to many appearances. If you are scared to speak in public this is really hard.

Lord knows I would hate to be photographed all the time and have people stare at me would make me self conscious. Thank goodness a prince didn’t fall in love with me. Ha, ha, ha

I might pay $50.00 for this dress but not $575.00

    • Olenna says:

Her posture was the first thing I noticed. Then the *bump* of hair. Then the dress, which is has one of those off-the-rack patterns and looks sorta matronly on her because she has no swag and her posture is terrible. There are older women with a sense style and flare that could have worn it much better.

      • Fluff says:

The bump reminds me of the female Star Trek DS9 characters, there’s a running fandom in-joke regarding their use of bumpits.

      • MonicaQ says:

@fluff oh god yes, Jadzia’s hair enraged me forever. You don’t have a 900 year old symbiote let that happen.

    • SKF says:

Why are her posture and self-confidence so bad?? Why does she wear hair pieces? How about because every single tiny aspect of her appearance and self is completely ripped apart every time she appears? Reading through these comments is awful. Every one is negative. FFS, this is an attractive, nice, well-meaning woman. She may not be the most attractive, the best dressed, the smartest or the hardest worker; but that’s an awfully tough standard to hold anyone too! She may not be Diana but that is a ridiculous comparison and one that is unfair because Diana was wonderful in many ways but she was also deeply flawed.

This isn’t my favourite dress; but Kate still looks nice and I appreciate that she’s at an event working when she has two children under three, and that she seems to be making an effort from the video I just watched. Good on her. The more events, the better.

  2. Betti says:

Like the colours and its appropriate for a children’s movie. But style is a bit meh.

As for the hair (and wiglets) – its not going anywhere so i guess we’ll just have to get used to it.

  3. CidySmiley says:

Her hair doesn’t look bad, just a little dated. It kind of fits her face though, she would look older with thinner hair. As for the dress, it’s pretty but I don’t think it’s 600$ pretty. Blue really is her color, but that shape isn’t really her shape, it cloaks her. I couldn’t imagine going to watch a movie in a dress and heels or a suit, just saying.

    • herewego says:

That swinging curtain hair looks so fake on the video one of the reporter’s posted.
I believe that back is partially a added piece somewhere in there

      • Citresse says:

And you can’t see the entire dress with such long, bulky hair. A ponytail would’ve been nice (and appropriate considering it was a children’s event) with blue accessories.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

      @ CidySmiley

How does she manage to make a 600$ dress look so frumpy as if she had bought it in some cheap teenager’s clothes store?
Would have been a lot better with some knitted jacket/jumper.

And are such sky-high heels really appropriate for watching a daytime child movie? She is dressed for an evening event or a cocktail party.

  4. Sara says:

Most women I know treat their hair like they’re Samson or something, and a cut will deprive them of their powers. Whenever I watch reality tv, the long-haired ladies pet their hair like some animal-very disturbing. Hiding Behind the Hair: can we make a documentary?

  5. Franca says:

Her style is so matronly. My grandma would rock this dress.

  6. Zinjojo says:

Meh. She has her own version of a uniform: dress, clutch, pumps (occasionally boots), and of course, hair.

I’d like to see her mix it up with some separates, well tailored pants, skirt, jacket. Take a look at other royals and they seem to have a much broader style spectrum. And chop at least four inches off that security blanket of hair.

    • Chrissy says:

This would have been the perfect occasion for a nice pant suit but alas, she knows better. The dress is very matronly and her hair is just UGH. She’s so boring and predictable.

@Deedee. IKR, her posture is the worst. Maybe, back pain?

  7. Antipodean says:

It suddenly became perfectly, touchingly clear that the hair is a major security blanket in these photos.

    • Betti says:

And combined with the bad posture – hunching over, it indicates that she’s trying to hide. From what who knows. Am sure there are posters who have studied these things who could shed light.

      • Senaber says:

I think she’s just trying desperately to not overshadow big baby Willy.

        Harry tho umpf

      • MinnFinn says:

Here’s my theory. She forgets to stand up straight. Case in point was when the microphones picked up Willy whispering “stand up straight” to her when they presented newborn George to the media as they left the hospital.

And also, since very high heels throw the body forward, standing up straight requires constant mindfulness to counter that effect. Wear them enough and standing up straight will become an ingrained habit. Because she only wears high heels for work and she works so little, she hasn’t had enough practice for the basics (such as standing up straight) of her pap walks to become ingrained habit.

And I doubt that she uses her hair or slouching to hide. This is because the preponderance of other evidence indicates the opposite of hiding. She apparently loves attention. For example she constantly makes deliberate choices to reveal as much leg as she can get away with. Also after the first photo of her dress flying up to reveal her nekked bum any rational person who did not want that type of attention would take the necessary steps to ensure that did not happen again. She did not. Therefore I am forced to conclude that she wants and likes attention.

  8. Lucky Charm says:

I’ll give her a couple of points in her favor for the dress. At least it has bright color to it and isn’t solid black this time. And it seems long enough to not flash the children when she bends or crouches down.

  9. savu says:

I wouldn’t pay that much for that dress either, but it does fit her perfectly. Love the length.

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Really? I think where the hemline hits right below her knee is awkward and distracting. To each their own I guess.

  10. Gail says:

Is it just the photo angle or does Harry appear to be avoiding eye contact with her?

    • BooBooLaRue says:

@Gail – was thinking something along those lines

    • melior says:

Conspiracy theorist over here but maybe they are hitting it nd trying to hide from the world?

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Did Harry get told to scale back his charity work in order to not over-shadow his brother? William looks really bad in comparison to Harry.
Especially the Invictus games gave Harry a lot of status. Aren’t the Cambridges involved in the Invictus games, too by now?

      • LAK says:

nope and nope. Harry is doing many events – see twitter sightings, and he is off to USA in the next few days to start on Invictus 2016. WK only show up after the work is done. not just with Harry’s efforts, but also with their charities.

      • FLORC says:

        LAK
But doesn’t Harry have some of his work listed as private time where if that was William it would be listed as an event? To keep his work count down.

      • LAK says:

        Florc: yep.

at the end of year count, Harry always has the lowest tally because much of his work is classed as private of non royal duty. WK have perfected the knack of getting most, if not all their, work/ ‘work’ credited as royal duty even if it doesn’t apply to other royals.

    • Zombie Shortcake says:

I was thinking it looks like mutual eye contact avoidance and minimal interaction. She isn’t even looking at him.

    • someone says:

It’s just these photos. If you check out the whole series on the Daily Mail, Harry and Kate were interacting and laughing.

      • Lauren II says:

Kate looks happier when Harry is around – who wouldn’t? William is Mr. Grumpy Pants – his demeanor reminds me of his father at this age. I wonder sometimes about the state of their marriage.

  11. elisabeth says:

    what an ugly dress!

    • Citresse says:

I thought maybe it needed a blazer or a light coat to the rescue but probably nothing could save it.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ Citresse

I agree: blazer, light coat, knitted jumper! Just remember how radiant and sporty Michelle Obama looked (white trousers, yellow knitted jumper) at some basketball game when Samantha Cameron visited her.

Btw. I don’t think anybody or anything can save Waity Katie.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

@ Pondering – I would not reference Michelle O as a fashion inspiration for anyone, let alone Kate. MO has had many MANY super frumpy mishaps over the years. Jessica Simpson would even be a better guiding light than Michelle.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ WinnieCoopersMom

        I ment this one:
        http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/david-cameron-samantha-official-visit-michelle-obama-313772

And yes, I would refer to Michelle Obama as stylish. Just look at the pic in the link above. It is casual and sporty and colourful and brilliant. Many women would wear that. The woman in pink top/black trousers standing next to her is the wife of the British Prime minister. And honestly the British woman looks like a cheap woman or some plastic doll of no substance especially in those heels for a sports event!

And trust me, Michelle O. is quite stylish. She just isn’t always the twinset and pearls type which applies to so many conservative women.

  12. Gossip is Great says:

Her dress is okay … just ‘okay’ though – nothing to write home about.

But this would’ve been way more suitable to wear than that horrible CK shirt dress on her recent solo engagement, or even that trip to the prison (where she wore too fancy an outfit). She should get several dresses made up in this style – plain colours would be good – the style isn’t likely to offend many and is smart.

Her hair, on the other hand … where is the real Kate? I’d like to see her natural hair, her natural eyes (sans fake eyelashes), more natural make-up … she looks like an overprocessed barbie doll currently.

    • Charlotte15 says:

That CK black + white houndstooth shirt dress she wore a month or so ago is, I think, my absolute least favorite thing that she has ever worn. It was so heinous and it was the one *relatively* affordable piece that she wore that didn’t sell out immediately. It was still in stock in many sizes weeks later. I think even the eBay “Kate” sellers who usually buy everything up to resell at a huge markup knew how unpopular that one was. Hideous!

  13. Em' says:

Ugh… her shoe choice is, once again, Oh so boring.

  14. Saywhatwhen says:

She looks nice and rested. The hair obviously cannot be helped. Appropriate length.

But that looks like H&M and they would have to boot my car when I leave 24.99 at the cash register with my thank you and head for the exit.

  15. Tash says:

The whole look from head to toe is so dated for a woman in her 30s. It’s one big yawn. And I never noticed this before but her posture is terrible.

  16. LAK says:

poor Normal Bill doesn’t get a mention even though he is walking behind her, and as president of Bafta, this is a work event for him whilst it is merely a fun event for her.

I like this dress and shoes. Per my comment in the previous thread, it’s reminiscent of Michelle Obama.

    • Betti says:

Its telling that its her and Harry who get the press attention – poor normal bill, looks like he’s finally getting that normal, quiet life he wanted.

      • herewego says:

Harry is the only one of the three with any real charisma though.

I think eventually William will just send Kate or Harry out to things if it’s not mandatory that he be there.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

I think Harry got told to scale back, recently, which is why he is in such a splendid mood.

      • Charlotte15 says:

Harry’s smiles all just look more genuine. As do the happy faces of the children with whom Harry interacts. I think William probably means well at events like this, but he’s more…awkward, or something. Harry got Diana’s charisma.

  17. Bethany says:

Maybe she needs a security blanket as she’s aware the witches will be out in force slagging off every single thing about her and please get your own opinions rather than quoting the celebitchy writers pathetic

    • Olenna says:

I really don’t think she reads or cares about what the masses comment on in celebrity gossip websites. Maybe you shouldn’t either; IMO it’s not worth the personal energy some people put into *slagging* other readers unless one is getting paid.

    • notasugarhere says:

It appears to me that there are far more people who praise her endlessly for shallow things (hair, makeup, buying expensive clothing). She showed up to work, ergo people praise her just for that. For doing what she should have been doing at least three days a week for the last four years.

    • bluhare says:

Personally I think calling us all witches is a bit over the top, but I guess it is Halloween. I’m posing as someone who can make a cogent argument for my point of view. What about you?

  18. Fifee says:

The dress is something that I would expect to see Camilla in, it just seems a bit too old for a young 30 something.

The hair is beyond ridiculous now; im just wondering if she suffered from some hair loss during her pregnancy and had extensions put in to thicken her hair out and she now cant used to the idea of being without them.

    • Cricket says:

Totally agree! The dress is nice and appropriate but just seems old. Maybe if she styled it with different shoes/booties? If she is at this event to interact with children and knows she will be bending down, etc to their level, why doesn’t she consider weari lower heels? Does she have to try to be as tall as William all the time?

There is definitely something going on with her hair. As mentioned numerous times, I think she totally uses it as a security blanket and is uncomfortable in the spotlight. Is it possible for her to have hair loss bc of not only pregnancy change but also bc of over use of extensions?

She just looks so unhappy lately, I feel sorry for her. I know she chased her prize for ten years but it does seem as though she has regret and is not comfortable in her position.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Cricket – on these Kate threads, I seem to always agree with you..as I do here. Yes, I concur that she seems to be regretful and uncomfortable in her position. Robotic and somber, with slight hints of sadness and medication.

    • LAK says:

she first started wearing them for her wedding. to hold the tiara in place. if you dont have thick hair and you have to wear a tiara, it’s advisable to wear some sort of hair attachment so that the tiara sits right. sometimes even with thick hair, you need to have that attachment.

that said, if you’ve never had thick hair or lose your hair for any given reason, extensions can be very addictive. that instant thickness, fullness, length especially when they are well done.

      • Fifee says:

Ahh ok, I didnt realise that she used them initially for the wedding, at least at that time they definitely didnt look OTT.

I know all about thin hair, lost about a 1/4 – 1/3 of an already reasonably thin covering overall since taking some magical medication but I dont have the cash for nice extensions hah!

  19. Citresse says:

Tabitha Webb is listed at DM as Kate’s “designer friend.” One look at the dress and it’s “with friends like that…

    • Pondering thoughts says:

The dress is probably better than it looks on Kate – if that makes any sense.

      • Citresse says:

Pondering thoughts: the other thing I notice about the dress is it fits tight above the waist and then loose and flowy below the waist contributing to a kind of tilted look when you add the busy pattern. I don’t know. I don’t think it’s a good look. Plus I think her hair looked better at Dundee.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Citresse: how is A-line weird? Are you saying when you pair that cut with a busy pattern it is? Bc otherwise, A-line is considered to be universally flattering.

      • Citresse says:

WinnieCoopersMom I usually like A-line, but in this case it needed more balance- such a busy pattern with plain hair and no accessories in blue. I think her hair worn up or in the half-up half-down style with blue accessories in her hair, a bolero jacket and a different pair of shoes would’ve looked better imo. She does tend to repeat her shoes.

  20. Fluff says:

It’s really cute. I’d wear it.

  21. Patty says:

Harry looks good. He should keep the facial hair. That’s all I got.

  22. benchwarmer says:

I think it’s fine for her to have long hair and the long bangs but it does seem like she is hiding in it as it shields her face on the sides. As someone who has hidden in her hair, it takes one to know one. I’d like to see it half pulled back or with a headband so you can feel like she is more present. I’m not a fan of prints or jersey but she wore this well and the print is fresh and unusual. I could see why this was chosen to attend a children’s event. I am more of a blazer/pencil skirt kind of girl and love a good tailored piece so I love when she wears the coat dresses but that would have been too stuffy for this setting.

    • Charlotte15 says:

@Benchwarmer I think she is gun-shy about wearing her hair back as frequently ever since the night of the reception at Clarence House that she attended in place of Charles a few years back and ALL of the press was about that mark on the side of her head which they announced later was a scar from a childhood surgery.

I know that many here didn’t believe that story and think that she was being defensive about having her extensions “outed,” but I believe there is a scar there because it is visible in other photos, such as when the wind is blowing her hair pre-engagement. (If I had more time I would try to find the one I’m thinking of but I have to go pick my kids up from school soon!) She very well may wear extensions — I sure would if I could afford it! – but I think that hers would be done better than that; no decent palace stylist would leave a thick line of glue or whatever so blatantly visible IMHO.

There are also countless reports that she’s had veneers, fillers, etc. and she never denies any of that. I think it was probably mortifying to have the eyes of the world scrutinizing her scar and they wanted to set the record straight. Obviously I could be wrong but that’s my take on it.

I do think that overall she would look much better if she let herself be more natural. I always think she looks better off-duty (like in the photo from last week of her with George at the Natural History Museum) and casual. But with high-def photos and zoom lenses (not to mention countless people like us worldwide commenting on sites like this! 😉) she probably feels the need for a metric ton of makeup for official engagements. *shrug*

      • FLORC says:

        Charlotte
The “scar from major childhood surgery” came immediately after the pictures. It was instant. If this was something to be uncomfortable about why admit this info? Extensions are common and many believed it so. Why make it directly about omething she’s not comfortable about? That seems backwards logic.

And the Veneers fillers, etc where never confirmed or denied like the scar was.

And Kate frequently has worn her hair back. Mostly in her downtime, but still often in appearances.

I think the “scar photo” was a last minute job done wrong.
And extremely doubtful she reads these comments. That reads lke wishful thinking on the parts of some. Not you! Just generallly speaking.
And heavy makeup? It’s a look that some people favor. Not to conceal, but to apply simply a desired look. Reading into that seems like too much assumption.

      • benchwarmer says:

I do recall that picture of the scar. I’m a longtime Celebitchy reader. I never considered that. LOL at metric ton of makeup. It’s the too perfect unsmudged bottom eyeliner that’s the offense. I am not a make-up fan so I’m no critic, it’s all too much for my liking. I only like the JCrew catalog make-up approach. I think if her hair were just a bit more tamed and less bouncy that might even help. Maybe chop a couple of inches off and wear it straighter or a more rugged beachy wave in lieu of the barbie/pagent look. A lot of models these days wear those curls that don’t curl under, it’s like an ‘undone’ wave. I myself don’t know how to do it.

  23. mazzie says:

Standard basic royal. Boring – which is what you want from your royals.

    • benchwarmer says:

I feel with the royals it’s a case of damned if you do and damned if you don’t. They do dress more conservatively = boring, bec. if they were flashy they’d be criticized for it. However, there is a happy medium that can be reached and she really should have a stylist who can give her more guidance, ie. how to wear her hair so it’s more mature, select shoes styles that don’t compromise the conservative look appropriate and expected of royals with out looking so blah and basic. To me pairing black or nude shoes with things is having the mindset that shoes don’t count and they just exist to walk in. Shoes count and it’s points off lol for negligence of that fashion region. It’s like the people that think black pants or a black skirt goes with everything. It doesn’t, often times pairing two colors together is a far better alternative than just black and whatever hue you have in your closet. Just ask Trinny and Susannah (remember those stylists circa Oprah early 2000’s), they wrote a book on all the color combinations, and were explicit in their reprimand of black plus every color.

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

I don’t think so. Yes, the dress code is more conservative than most people would choose for work, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s boring. The queen herself demonstrates that regularly, with bright colors and interesting textures and patterns. Sophie is another example of a royal who stays within the conservative dress code but manages to look stunning quite frequently. Bea and Eugenie have gotten better at the game in recent years, too.

Kate just can’t be bothered. And since her body language almost constantly screams insecurity, I’m not holding out for her to get more adventurous with shoes or any other aspect of her style anytime soon.

      • benchwarmer says:

You’re right about the Queen, she is quite daring with color. And I think Bea and Eugenie dress more on trend as well. It sure is puzzling why she doesn’t like shoes lol. What girl has no interest in shoes but it definitely seems the case as if her shoes are an afterthought. Like she selects a dress and then goes to her closet and says, the beige or the black? lol With her resources she could be slamming it in the shoe department! There are plenty of insanely beautiful pointy shoe closed pumps or even ones with a slight platform like she favors.

  24. khaveman says:

I wish she would change up her shoe game. I like the dress.

    • benchwarmer says:

I agree, her shoes are an outfit killer. A colored shoe would have given it more zing. The black shoes are too severe and conservative in contrast with the dress. I know that she can’t wear open toes and I get it, I don’t wear them either, but a blue shoe with an ankle strap would have added interest.

  25. potatopie says:

If you look at the pictures that are on dailymail.com – she looks miserable. I am starting to “buy into” the depression theory. Something is “off” with her or she’s just needing to go on the annual vacation and continue to “do nothing”. She and hubby have that down pat. Give me Harry any day – he is definitely a worker.

    • herewego says:

      Harry yes.

    • notasugarhere says:

I don’t think she’s miserable in her everyday life. She has everything she wanted (status, money, The Prince). I think she’s miserable when she shows up for work, because she doesn’t want to be there when there isn’t a Hollywood star or Ben Ainslie there to greet her.

    • Christin says:

She looks engaged and even downright ecstatic during sports or celebrity meetings. I just don’t think she is a good actress when it comes to most other appearances.

    • Charlotte15 says:

@PotatoPie I agree. Just because she got the life she chased and wanted for all those years doesn’t mean she doesn’t regret it now that she’s actually living it.

We’ll never know but I don’t think she would allow herself to look so glum at the fact of having to merely show up to “work” — she’s a better actress than that IMO. Something seems not right with her lately.

  26. Hazel says:

Pippa wears Tabitha Webb. Like Beulah London, it’s one pattern with variations on sleeve length & fabric, and way over-priced.

    • LAK says:

Beulah London send a portion of their profits to help victims of human trafficking in India, so i don’t feel bad about the cost of the clothing especially since their target market is ladies who lunch.

However, you are right, it is overpriced.

  27. India says:

What’s up with her calf muscle in the 4th and 5th photos?

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

Nothing, really. I’m a massage therapist, and to me it looks like normal musculature, but most of us a) aren’t thin enough and b) don’t wear high enough heels to get that kind of muscle definition in that area.

I tried to come up with something else interesting to add to the conversation, but it’s impossible with a subject so dull and vacant.

    • FLORC says:

Wearing heels with no fat to cover them. She might have just wworked out and they’re engorged.

Of all the things to pkke at this shouldn’t register.

  28. iseepinkelefants says:

She looks so old. I don’t know if it’s the stooped posture or the fact that she looks like she stepped out of the 70’s or what but in that pic with hairy, she’s giving me Queen vibes (little old lady posture). Hideous dress. Maybe if it was shorter? It’s so matronly.

  29. Christin says:

Her bangs (fringe) are growing at rapid speed.

  30. Cee says:

I believe “basic” is the way to define Kate.

    • Senaber says:

Yep she is very simply an incredibly ordinary person in an incredibly extraordinary role so everyone is incredibly underwhelmed.

      • Cee says:

That and the fact she has done less than the minimum to fulfill her role. When concerning Kate, the only topic of conversation regarding the Duchess of Cambridge is her physical appearance, bland fashion choices and dubious hair styles and colours. If she did something worthwhile, we could all move on and take her more seriously.

      • Ally.M says:

She’s exactly what the royals wanted, the complete opposite to Diana, good and bad.

  31. neutral says:

Wonder if it might have occurred to some of the snipers on her that she had been suffering from post natal depression?

    • notasugarhere says:

This is a discussion that comes up every few threads. Some very interesting conversation, particularly from professionals in the field most of whom think the answer is, “No.” This is mainly down to the fact that she shows no signs in other aspect in her life, only when she shows up for an everyday bread-and-butter royal assignment. Vacation, shopping, playing, or with Ben Ainslie she is fine.

      • neutral says:

But what other aspects of her life do we see?

      • FLORC says:

        Neutral
Shopping, vacation. And here and there a shopkeeper will speak to the press about how engaging she was.
PPD is SERIOUS! Kate carries on as she always has only now she appears more engaged. That she doesn’t have outside friends and doesn’t work more does not equal PPD. And it’s imo a major insult to use such a serious illness to excuse known behavior a woman has had long before her 1st pregnancy.

It’s a pet peeve of mine to start tossing out real and horrible illnesses to excuse her lack of action. Kate makes time and energy for what she wants. If she cancelled on celebs or premieres you’d have something to go on, but she does not.

    • anne_000 says:

Funny enough that nobody accuses her of PPD when she attends fun events at which she’s hobnobbing with the rich and famous. Is this the upper crust version of PPD therapy?

People who say she has PPD seem to base their diagnosis on her disinterest and glum looks at events that deal with real people having real problems. Can we just compare that to her exuberance at the fun events where she and celebrities are at the center of adoring attention?

Maybe it’s not PPD, but just the same type of reaction a little girl has when she has to sit through a grown-up event versus playing around at a kiddie party?

Maybe her alleged PPD emotions is just her being bored by other people at the more serious charity visits? Same with the alleged HG.

      • neutral says:

Yeah, sure that’s why she ended up in hospital. I don’t know whether she had pnd but neither does anyone else.

      • notasugarhere says:

neutral, the HG both times has been questioned by many. Frequently women with HG cannot stand any motion at all. She happily drove her car all over, drove herself to the hospital, and got on an airplane for a 10 hour flight. It is far more likely that she had morning sickness, regular old morning sickness.

      • FLORC says:

        Neutral
Carrying the heir is TOP priority. No other medical emergency tops that. Any little thing as a precautionary measure would land Kate in a private hospital bed. It’s not the same as if you or I went to the hospital. That’s a common misconception.

And regarding HG. There’s morning sickness, severe morning sickness, and what many people think of with HG of constantly not even being able to swallow saliva because of a gag reflux. Kate lost no weight or muscle mass. She appeared to have normal MS and checked herself out in time to present an award with David Beckham on camera.
IF she had it she showed no common effects from it and recovered swiftly. It only effected her late 1st trimester to early 2nd trimester. The rest she was seen eating out with William or on vacation being active.

It’s just extremely likely she had MS that was treated with preventative care. So if all there is against that is I can’t prove my point, but neither can you it’s not looking like a strong argument.

      • FLORC says:

        Nota
Technically HG is MS. And requrements to classify it as such have changed to make it easier.
        Neutral/Nota
Without charts and info we can’t know without some doubt, but we can all make educated guesses.

Severe MS means you’re going to be dehydrated, hormones *funky (*technical term) and will lose weight to a point you and your childs life could be in danger. At the VERY least Kate would have lost weight and muscle tone. She emerged early to mid 2nd trimester looking totally healthy with no weight loss. Her pregnancy and how she went on with motion sensetive activies like sledding and was around lots of scent products some find to irritate their gag reflux is another clue. Tossing in she was only out late 1st tri to early 2nd tri is a huge clue. She cancelled majority of enggements, but flew, vacationed, shopped, exercised, etc. All things women with severe MS/HG could not do.

As a side note I sort of hated how everyone became an expert on HG overnight via the medical school of Google.

    • Deedee says:

We’ll see how she looks at the movie premiere.

    • bluhare says:

HAHAHA!! You guys are getting predictable.

  32. Betti says:

I saw the video on the Fail of her taking part in the fun at the premiere – Welly throwing and the silly walk for an animation sequence. She looked like she was having fun and got involved – shame Normal Bill didn’t. Now if they were only to stick to it and carry on in this vein then they could really make a difference for the organisations that they are patron of – not to mention how much it would improve their image.

    • Cee says:

She should only be involved with things that interest her, because she seems unable to commit to anything else.
Sports should be one of her main causes. She loves them and they’re extremely important.

  33. PRINCESSDI says:

OMG — why is Kate wearing my grandmother’s dress?! Early Halloween?

That said, Kate would look good wearing anything. Even this.

  34. dawnchild says:

I think I’ve begun to accept that she really does not want the waving/working royal life. Her body language is always defensive with those arms crossed in front of her. She doesn’t want to play to fame, though she’s fine with the perks of riches and title.
William is probably so scarred by his parents’ shenanigans and his mother’s private crazies that he really did just pick someone who is never going to operate on that wattage…ever. As in, incapable of it.
I don’t think that’s Kate’s fault. It IS her fault for looking like she was going to represent a work ethic and then reneging.
    Also, a question:
If she is such a shopper (and not saying she is not) who and where does she wear her wardrobe for? It doesn’t seem as though she has friends or an active social life either. Or, is that not allowed to be photographed?

And, oh lord, the hair has taken a pathological turn…!

    • Betti says:

I disagree – she wants the celebrity status, always has. She spent 10 years mugging for the press, tipping paps off etc.. – now that she’s married she’s got to be more subtle about it. She knows she’ll get plastered all over the press for what she wears – hence why she takes great pride in her appearance. She wants to be known for her looks and what she wears – if she didn’t she would make more of an effort to make her PR narrative more about her causes than her. Given that she doesn’t – it tells you what’s important to her, her vanity.

      • dawnchild says:

But if she was so excited about being out there in her new clothes and hairdo, wouldn’t that at least impel her to be doing much more…if for nothing else, then to trot out another outfit? You know , a constant fashion parade sort of thing? I”m beginning to get the feel that she kind of goes out there hiding in her hair just to do the bare minimum, before vacay…

  35. perplexed says:

    She looks tired.

Did pregnancy change her nose? — her face looks different but I can’t put my finger on what.

I don’t really ever come away thinking that she’s dressed horribly (for the kind of role she has anyway), but she seems kind of…meh..about everything, and the photos turn out bland as a result. Maybe she really does hate this particular dress though and that’s why she’s stooping? I usually stoop when I’m uncomfortable in what I’m wearing.

    • FLORC says:

Ears and nose never stop growing. And pregnancy can change a face slightly. So it’s possible. I’ve seen nose angles pre and post Charlotte and there’s no change.

      • perplexed says:

I just think her face looks different in these sets of pictures — but maybe she’s just exhausted. (Or the tabloids have stopped photoshopping her face). It’s like the glow she had on her wedding day is gone.

  36. TotallyBiased says:

Okay, I have to ask–‘a British animation team’?
Y’all have never heard of Wallace & Grommit, and Aardman Animation? They RULE stop motion animation! They are the claymation Kings of this century. Shaun had a very successful movie, and now he’s getting the odd BBC Christmas special (which this is one.)
Big deal premiere, considering it’s only 30 minutes long and on TV. Did I miss something about it being connected to a charity function?

    • notasugarhere says:

      Wensleydale cheese, please.

      • TotallyBiased says:

To the moon, Gromit, to the moon!!
Okay, sorry, just crossed the streams.
        Have a cranberry.

    • Hazel says:

Have you not seen the Shaun the Sheep DVDs?! Get yourself to a store immediately. They are hilarious. And remember, he made his debut in A Close Shave.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Hazel, you ARE speaking to Kaiser and Co, right? Because that was my very point–my astonishment! that anyone could be unfamiliar with Aardman and their works. 😉

  37. Katie says:

    Sigh. Harry looks lovely.

  38. Betti says:

She’s wearing a sheer, pale blue, floor length Jenny Packham gown with the mop tied up. Very event appropriate and looked like she was loving it. And yes she was flirting with Daniel Craig. She does love mingling with those Hollywood celebs.

    • Citresse says:

      Especially when braless.

      • notasugarhere says:

Sheer back to the dress, very low cut all around, braless, and loads of side boob. Not a regal look.

      • Betti says:

        LOL i never noticed.

      • Citresse says:

notasugarhere Didn’t notice any side boob. Colour of gown washed out dull looking however it may not have photographed well. Didn’t like the wedge style shoes though I thought the earrings were ok. Many reported she looked stick thin.

      • Citresse says:

ps- The DM has several photos of Kate’s shoes. I thought “wow really high heels.” Then I wondered if Diana ever wore heels that high? I’m pretty sure the answer is no.

      • Christin says:

It looks like a 1970s (lingerie) gown set from the front. She could just call at a night and not even have to change clothes.

      • caitlin says:

I didn’t notice the braless part as much as the protruding shoulder blades, collar bones and rib cage. Her other outfits concealed this to a large extent, although the heavily padded bras played a part too.

      • bluhare says:

I thought it looked like a peignoir too.

    • wendi says:

Not the most flattering look – she has a very bony upper back and in some of the front & side shots, her ribs are visible.

    • Charlotte15 says:

I hate those Jimmy Choo shoes she’s wearing to the premiere tonight. She’s worn them for years and I would love to never ever see them again. I think they’re so tacky.

  39. What's inside says:

Does absolutely nothing for her. Reminds me of a housedress my mother used to wear in the early 70s.

    • Citresse says:

Kate seems to favour a prom or bridesmaid look for evening gown. I don’t think she’s ever worn a formfitting style? Maybe it’s because she doesn’t want to draw so much attention to her thinness. When you think about it, it’s amazing she gave birth to two babies over eight pounds.

      • notasugarhere says:

She has worn several fitted evening gowns. Green Burton for giving David Beckham an award. All-over disco ball glitter gown after PGTips was born. White Mouret with the high-thigh slit.

  40. maggie says:

A shoe with an ankle strap would have finished this look nicely and shown off her gorgeous legs!

  41. tomorrow says:

I am sorry but the Jenny Peckham gown was so inappropriate in all levels. Its like France part 2 but without actually taking her clothes off and it ages her. I could see Carole wearing this and looking good too. Whenever William spends time with her, her eyes dont looked that dead.

  42. Charlotte15 says:

Tonight’s dress is tragic IMO. Someone at WhatKateWore said it looked like something that Mrs. Roper on “Three’s Company” would have worn and I can’t stop laughing at that reference. There was also a Blanche Devareaux reference that made me burst out laughing.

I do think her hair looks gorgeous tonight though!

  43. Anare says:

Dress looks inexpensive, busy. It looks like something I’d flip past on a rack at Macys.

    • Christin says:

From the front, it looked like something out of the 1970s-80s Penney’s catalog (no offense there, as I enjoyed flipping through said catalog each season). Just not sure if it would have been in the nightgown or bridesmaid section. Maybe a dual use outfit?
