Carrie Underwood apologizes to Matthew McConaughey for joke

country music awards press room 060409

Carrie Underwood won Entertainer of the Year at the American Country music awards this past weekend. It was a big deal because she’s only the 7th woman to have received the award in the show’s 42 year history. Being that she was understandably in shock, Underwood admits she practically blacked out, and doesn’t remember what she said. She made the slightest, most inoffensive (in my opinion) dirty joke ever, relating to a story Matthew McConaughey told as he was presenting the award. Everyone laughed at the time, but apparently it caused enough of a scandal that Underwood had to apologize to McConaughey – and her family.

Carrie Underwood was overwhelmed to have won “Entertainer of the Year” at the American Country Music Awards on Sunday night, but the moment did turn a little mortifying when she made a sexual reference joke to wanting to see Matthew McConaughey’s “boots” in her acceptance speech.

The Texas-born actor presented Underwood with the big award, but before his official duties he entertained the audience with a story on how he and his brother once took a road trip thru Texas to see Dwight Yoakam perform. While there the brothers tried to “pick up” a few ladies by telling them that they made a livin’ exclusively custom-making George Strait’s boots.

“We’re like, ‘Oh yeah. Say, as I a matter of fact, out in the parking lot, in the trunk of our white Corvette, we have the next year’s new edition white ostrich quill George Strait signed series that he’s gonna wear on tour next year.’ And they got pretty excited about that and said, ‘Well, can we see? Can we see? Can we see?'” McConaughey told the audience. “And we obliged … Point of the story is, we got lucky that night. Thank you, George.”

After taking the trophy from McConaughey, a tearful Underwood caused jaws to drop when she said: “I don’t know what to say. I got nothin’ … I want to see those boots, Matthew.” (The audience erupted into laughter but somehow we don’t think his leading lady, Camila Alves, was so amused). And clearly, Carrie regretted the spur-of-the-moment sexual advance.

“I’m so embarrassed, I totally embarrassed myself. I just blanked,” Underwood told Tarts backstage, burying her head in her hands. “You want to say something eloquent in a moment like that and I embarrassed myself. I’m sorry Matthew, I’m sorry to my family. I’m totally embarrassed.” She even admitted that she “blacked out” after hearing her name called and couldn’t remember much between making it from her seat to the stage and then to the press room.

[From Fox News’ Pop Tarts]

Was that joke fairly benign or am I just jaded and disgusting? I wouldn’t bat an eyelash. While I don’t think any of it was out of line, if I were forced to call fault on someone here I’d say it was Matthew’s story, not Carrie’s little response to it. Country music fans must just have a better sense of propriety than I do. Not that it’d take much.

I understand Carrie’s near-blacking out from surprise. I do the same thing whenever I’m in shock. Or whenever someone kisses me. Probably because I’m in shock. I cannot imagine the stupid, useless crap that I would utter in that situation. Really, Underwood might be a little embarrassed, but it could have been a lot worse. Some vaguely dirty joke about sex and boots isn’t all that terrible.

Here’s Matthew presenting the award and telling his story. Carrie is shown before and after the Academy of Country Music Awards at the MGM Grand Hotel in Vegas on Sunday. Images thanks to WENN .

    Short dress=winner. Long dress=pass.

I still really don’t get why it was considered remotely offensive. LOL.

I reread it, and then opened it out of context and look at it from the side and tilted my head (lol) and I’m still like “Uh. What’s the big deal?”

I would’ve said something far worse to Mr. McConaughey. Along the lines of like naked and bongos.

    American Idol singer….aggggg

  3. Marianne says:

And now Carrie Underwood is “country music”. I miss the old days when country music meant Johnny Cash or Neil Young.
Anyway, the joke was just silly. If the guy was “available”, it’d be fine. But he’s got a girl. Carrie, some sense of decorum, please. I know the joke was somehow innocent, but even then, inappropriate.

  4. Pufft says:

I guess there’s not much to be pissed about in America if someone has to apologize for such a remark. I’m now convinced that everyone is trying to find benign things to moan about to keep their minds off the global credit crisis that is driving the world into recession

  5. Michelle B. says:

I don’t know, I thought that little speech was cute as hell. Not offensive in the least. MMc didn’t seem offended at all.

  6. flicketyflack says:

I don’t think anyone actually is offended. It was a hilarious story from Matthew McC, a hilarious comment from Carrie, and everybody in the audience was hooting and hollering about the whole thing. Her speech was great.

I think Carrie’s just saying she’s a little embarrassed and Fox News is sensationalizing it into a bigger story than it is.

  7. Dan says:

Not offensive at all… His story was funny and her quip was too. Viva la Tejas!

  8. waaaahh says:

What is the big deal? people are so damn sensitive. I can’t even believe she apologized.

  9. Richard says:

It was his cute story, and her reply was cute. Too bad she felt she needed to apologize!

  10. sarcra says:

I saw no reason for her to apologize… her fans a little sensitive or something?

  11. daisy424 says:

American Girl is a fabulous song, she is talented woman. The story is cute, I don’t think it is a big deal.

flicketyflack; Google this headline, Fox is not the only media outlet “sensationalizing it into a bigger story than it is”.

  12. Ceenitall says:

Matthew, I want to see thoes boots too, and I will not apologize fo saying that cuz I mean it!

    Neil Young = county music????

  13. Lucinda says:

I think she apologized because she was embarrassed. It’s not a big deal and it was funny. But she’s young and I think it’s classy that she apologized even if she didn’t need to.

  14. Marianne says:

Well, Neil changed his style many times during his career, but he had his way in country music for some time. Especially in the CSNY period.

  15. TinaWithPom says:

Carrie shouldn’t have apologized. Why does anyone not call out Matthew for going on stage and telling everyone about he and his brother getting lucky with some women one night in a car even though Matthew has a son with a woman he is living with. Carrie’s joke was harmless; Matthew’s public vignette, his little trip down memory lane, on the other hand, was skirting along the lines of disrespect to his son’s mother.

  16. Hieronymus Grex says:

So when is she going to apologize for calling her Top 40 pablum country music ?

  17. lrm says:

I actually thought she wanted to see the ostrich boots—you know? Just a silly continuation of the original joke. Still,I’d prob. be apologizing, too,if my main words uttered after winning a big award, were about MMC’s joke. I’d seriously doubt M or Camilla were remotely offended.
And Camilla’s brasialian….they appear to take things, especially sexuality,in a little bit more stride than we americans do.

  18. orion70 says:

I am SO not a fan of country music, so I don’t know much over squat about Carrie Underwood….but give me a break. This was so far from requiring an apology. Especially to Matthew Mc…he seems pretty easy going.

It was funny for cripes sake.

Also: what is up with her leg in that third picture? It looks like that time I popped my Barbie’s leg out.

  19. Judy says:

Oh come on what is there to say I am sorry for. He told a story and she made a crack BFD.

  20. Nicole says:

If you saw earlier, Reba McIntyre was flirting away with the male country starts, even said Brad Paisley was a good kisser.
    She was hilarious.
Carrie, don’t worry about it, I didn’t even think it as sexual really.

  21. elisha says:

Carrie deserved it. She has total cross-over appeal. This, coming from someone who KNOWS country… Merle, Hank, Willie, and George. I’m no “Cash is King” poser.

  22. claudia says:

I loved that comment! It was so funny and one of the most entertaining moments of the night. No apology necessary.

  23. raunnie says:

Just as Michael Phelps does not have to apologize for smoking ganja; Carrie Underwood need not apologize for her comments. Matthew was the one telling the bawdy story; that said, it was a good yarn.

  24. Mia says:

^^^yeah, really Matthew M. told the story, he was prepared for people to make jokes about it. Relax Carrie; I didn’t think anything about it after she said it. She didn’t apologize for the subject matter of “before he cheats” or “last name.” I think one prude complained and “her people” though it best to have her apologize. And what was she apologizing to her family for? that made no sense.

  25. Ali says:

There really wasn’t any need for Carrie to apologize. I don’t think it was a big deal to anyone- it took me rereading it fifty times to even see the offensive side of the comment. If Camila really felt uncomfortable by that comment, how would she react to the thoughts of everyone who would like a piece of Matthew?

  26. Aspen says:

If Camila was insecure about THAT…I feel sorry for Matthew.

She had nothing to apologize for.

  27. Your Friend says:

folks, you gotta remember that this is country music. she probably thought the bible-belt, big-money sponsers would crack down on her … its a shame she had to apologize. it was harmless. sign of the times, though.

  28. PunkCountryFan says:

Here in the bible belt, no one I know has cared. If she thinks we’re that easily offended, she needs to spend some more time down on the ranch. We are not all a bunch of prudes. I can’t speak for her sponsors, though. And real country music pretty off color at times. People are worried about all the wrong things.

  29. PunkCountryFan says:

you’ll notice no one is upset with Matthew M for telling the story. I think this was Carrie’s people worried she looked too much like a real grown up woman than a virginal barbie doll.

  30. brieline says:

i think it was funny actually i started laughing and so did the audience and matt and reba…everyone was enjoying that comment!…i think that when artist act like people and cut the conservative act out it makes them more relatable…carrie always acts like a lady at the award shows but its nice to see this other side of her..i like this side better!…she is still a classy lady in my opinion and she doesnt need to apologize to matthew he seems like he has a sense of humor and im sure reba would have said it if carrie didnt she’s funny too. i think its nice to apologize just in case there are some robots without a sense of humor who got offended.

  31. sauvage says:

Good Lord, this is a SCANDAL? If I really HAD to be offended, it’d be because of the story McConaughey told, and even THAT would cost me a whole lotta effort. Jeeez…!

  32. dar says:

He’s the one who told the racy story in the first place. Why isn’t he apologizing for telling a story about lying to girl to get them to sleep with him?

It’s absurd for her to feel any need to apologize.

  33. Allywags says:

Wow… someone told me about “the incident” that some media outlets were making a big deal over and after I watched it, I was like, really?? WOW… get a grip people. So dumb. Wasn’t the least bit offensive. CARRIE ROCKS!!

  34. Blah blah blah says:

This is such a load of crap. To whom is this actually a big deal?

It’s ok for HIM to tell some trashy story about manipulating women to get in their pants, but it’s not ok for her to tell a very clear joke.

Anyway, there’s no point in criticizing Carrie for apologizing–the whole reason she did it is probably because either her publicist told her to, and/or somebody actually DID complain to them about it.
