Why is tonight’s Victoria’s Secret show already a huge, controversial mess?

wenn4165226

The annual Victoria’s Secret show is going down tonight and there’s already been a mountain of controversy about it. Just FYI… we likely won’t be covering many of the runway pics tomorrow, just because we’re not really the T&A kind of site, you know? Plus, it’s not like Taylor Swift is going to be performing in lingerie like in years past. But it’s sort of weird how the Vicky’s Secret show has become a “thing.” It airs on network TV, there’s an A-list red carpet and many of the big-name models work the show. This year might be the moment the tide begins to turn though. Here are some assorted scandals:

Rihanna backed out at the last minute. That was just announced a week ago, so producers scrambled to find a replacement. They got Ellie Goulding to fill in as the performer, which should bring an extra level of annoyance (Ellie’s voice plucks my last nerve). Why did Rihanna back out at the last minute? No one really knows. The official reason is that she wants to focus on her long-gestating album. There were some rumors that she simply didn’t have any new music to perform. And some said that she didn’t want to perform because of the low-quality models. Speaking of…

Kendall Jenner will model. As will Gigi Hadid. This is a bad thing, because in past years, Victoria’s Secret would hire the biggest name models out there, and now they’re just getting reality show people? Kendall was dropped from last year’s show too, so she’s obviously the “replacement” for bigger-name models who aren’t doing it this year.

Jourdan Dunn threw a fit. She pulled out of the show just after Rihanna and Jourdan did a tweet-and-delete, writing: “Feeling so much better about not doing BS… sorry I mean VS now that Rihanna isn’t doing it also.” No one really knows what Jourdan’s specific beef is at this point, but she’s walked the VS runway the past three years and she was one of the most prominent women of color on the runway.

The models aren’t getting paid the big bucks. Even though the VS show has become more and more lucrative for VS corporate, VS isn’t sharing the wealth with the models. Old contracts with models like Alessandra Ambrosio used to be worth “millions,” but these days, the contracts being offered are about $100,000. That’s probably why many of the biggest-name models aren’t showing up – there will be NO Karlie Kloss, Doutzen Kroes or Cara Delevingne.

So, will this year’s show be a hotbed of controversy and inanity? I miss the good old days when Miranda Kerr and Justin Bieber “hit it off” at the VS show and Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss decided they were going to be BFFs. What are we going to get this year? Blah.

Wait, I thought Ri bounced because Jourdan got bumped for Kendall?

ETA: I sound like I’m in high school. Smh

    • Kaiser says:

      That’s one theory!

    • QQ says:

That’s what i heard myself, that it was very last minutey

*Sigh* my heart hurts for Leonardo Di Caprio, and the Pussy Pose how will they pick their 2016 season Models with this crop of mediocrity

      • Sara says:

        Shipping Gigi and LEO!

      • Shambles says:

Missed you, QQ, and I hereby nominate you for Stage Manager/ Chairman of the Board of the P*ssy Posse, which would have you directly supervising the recruitment and training of thirsty, leggy blondes

      • mimif says:

I heard QQ eats leggy blondes for breakfast.

      • QQ says:

Shambles, Mimif : Picture me with a Kelly Cutrone board, headset, all black outfit, ungainly, barking at these substandard Models for not being Quality Control ready for The Doughy Beardo One and his cohorts

      • ISO says:

It’s shocking to me how -boring- Kendall Jenner appears particularly compared with any other models side X side. She has no “look”. I get face amnesia with this one. I wouldn’t recommend she stand next to another model.

    • Mia V. says:

Or those b****s didn’t had her money.

    • Abbott says:

I thought it was bc no one would get to smack Ariana Grande with angel wings?

    • tabasco says:

I want to know what kind of contracts VS books it talent under? Wouldn’t you think there’d be a clause put in when RiRi, or whomever, signs on, that if you ditch the week before, you’ll have to pay damages or something?

    • Diva says:

That’s what I heard too. They got rid of Jourdan for Kendall.

    • Linn says:

Pretty sure thats BS. They added several outfits last minute so they could have easily added another one for Jourdan. There was absolutely no need to fire one of the models to fit Kendall in.

And even if there was they just fired one of the newcomer no-names instead of a girl like Jordan who has walked several times before.

Several models who walked the show before or worked for VS heavily this year didn’t make the cut. They probably just didn’t like Jourdan this year for whatever reason.

  2. Mia4s says:

Oh no! Lower quality of models?? You mean Leo will have to go outside the catalogue for his next piece? That’s too much work! He has an Oscar to beg for! 😉

  3. missmerry says:

I think the ‘quality’ of these types of things goes downhill with the ‘quality’ of the people involved.

You have mediocre performers flanked by mediocre ‘models’ who are all mediocre people in general…you get a ‘fashion show’ that feels like an old, warm bath that you were expecting to be hot and steamy.

    • belle de jour says:

Question: is (or was) VS generally considered a ‘good’ or ‘quality’ or upper-level trendy lingerie brand? The only impression I had of it or its customers is skewed (because 34th St. store is probably not the norm), and I thought its catalogues were mostly considered sort of safe or acceptable soft-core eye fluff for dads and husbands and teenage sons?

      • Bread and Circuses says:

Literally about 20 years ago, VS sold the best underwear. It was still overpriced, but it was comfy and cute and well-made from good quality fabrics.

Now, the quality is nothing special, the price is still inflated, and it’s all about spectacle not substance.

And now even the spectacle is becoming half-rate.

      • belle de jour says:

        Thank you for explaining:)

      • tabasco says:

        Amen, Bread and Circuses.

  4. Leah says:

The rumour is that Rihanna pulled out because they replaced Jourdan with that kardashian girl.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

Yeah that’s what I heard. That VS decided to replace Jourdan (who I think is gorgeous) for Kendall because they want to appeal to the Instagram 15 year old kids. You know what I love Rihanna for this plus she doesnt need VS neither does Jourdan.

      • claire says:

If that is the reason she pulled out then good for her to support her friend. A few other VS models faved Jourdan’s tweet before it was deleted so it probably was some BS decision.

    • Wren says:

That seems a rather petty and un-business like reason to cancel the gig. Are she and Jourdan really tight or something?

My guess is that something went wrong in the contract negotiations and the people in charge of putting this thing together have their heads up their asses somehow. It sounds like they’ve pissed more than one person off and the whole current line-up is an exercise in mediocrity.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

@Wren I think they are, it’s Cara, Rih & Jourdan who are tight. What’s weird it’s that Cara is also tight with Kendall & Oliver from Balmain is also friends with both Jourdan & Kendall. Bad Blood anyone? I also don’t know how I know all of this which worries me more.

      • Leah says:

I was thinking that there was some racial aspect here? I don’t think thats petty. Jourdan has been pretty outspoken before about racism in the modelling industry.

      • mimif says:

Yeah they ax the only black model for Kendall Jenner? If it is true, props to Rihanna for bowing out.

      • Josephine says:

Not petty at all. It’s called business. If we’re stuck with all of these crappy models because someone is pulling strings or paying for them to get exposure, I see no reason for Rihanna to do the same, and pull strings for people she supports.

      • qwerty says:

mimif, there are other black models walking.

But these reality tv girls have no place in a vsfs.

      • mimif says:

I did not know that, qwerty, I swear I read that she was the only one. Thanks for the clarification.

      • COSquared says:

        There’s Jasmine Tookes.

      • Linn says:

There were several black models this year, just like in the past years.

        Jasmine Tookes (Angel)
        Lais Ribeiro (Angel)
        Gracie Carvalho
        Joan Smalls
        Leila Nda
        Leomie Anderson
        Maria Borges

    • Veronica says:

I don’t blame her. I was mad about that, too, and I don’t even mind Kendall that much as a model. They’re really limiting themselves by whitewashing the show so much. I’ve often commented to my coworkers at VS what a waste it was to have Dunn on contract because she’s SO beautiful and striking, but they utilize her hardly at all in their advertising.

  5. Pandy says:

I’m picturing Cara Delavigne trying to work a bra and panties with zero boobs and hips.

    • COSquared says:

That’s basically everyone except Adriana & Alessandra. There appears to be an outpouring of FW-type of models.

      • kay says:

Alessandra has no curves except for the new boobs. She’s painfully skinny.

      • Pablo says:

I’ll add Candice. Despite I usually like women with a little more meat I love her body. Her waist-hips ratio is amazing.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Adriana’s face is out of this world, but she isn’t curvy either. From the casting videos I have seen, Gigi has an amazing body.

    • Bassza says:

I have size A’s and pretty small hips, I still ‘work’ underwear and its definitely working for me. You dont have to have huge tits to look good. Some girls are fat, some average, some thin. Theyre all real women and can all wear whatever they want. Women with small chests have to put up with so much from the media/other women and often feel like we arent really ladies. If us size A’s can walk the catwalk, feel sexy and make money from it then go for it. For once the big chested girls can be jealous of us and our limbs.

      • Josephine says:

Women with no curves are featured on every single other runway. The norm in the modeling world is the A or B cup, because the women need to be painfully thin to model, and that usually means fewer curves. I think the point was that the VS show has typically included models with curvier shapes, some of whom wouldn’t be given jobs in other shows. As far as the fashion industry goes, your shape is the one designers design for. I actually found it nice when someone who looks more like me is represented once in awhile.

  6. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Am I the only one still remembering that Rihanna v. Kendall tweet from back in the day?

I’m not saying Rihanna would give up her coins strictly because she doesn’t like Kendall, but maybe everything put together was enough for her to say deuces and drop out.

As it is the ‘new’ line up isn’t (Goulding, Jenner, and Hadid) isn’t exactly intriguing enough to watch the show.

  7. Kitten says:

I’m just here to say that I don’t care. You’re welcome for my valuable contribution to the discussion.

But seriously, I wouldn’t watch Miss America so why would I watch this sh*t? “oh look pretty women being pretty. wow.”

You guys can let me know what happens while I’m getting stoned and watching Newsroom.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I didn’t even know it was today! I just remembered the Rihanna/Jourdan tweet & thought VS has a runway show?!

I’m with you, Kitten. No one bother me because I’ll be watching the flash…its my guilty pleasure, I have a thing with tight superhero suits (walks away)

      • swack says:

I’m still trying to catch up with this season of Flash. My go to Tues is NCIS and NCIS – NO. Love me some Gibbs and Pride (more my age – plus Scott Bakula is from my home town – St. Louis).

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

@swack Flash this season is so good! I actually haven’t watched NCIS any of them but I’ll add it to my list. I just started watching Grey’s anatomy since I discovered How to get away with murder so Shonda has my heart, my soul & my eyes right now.

      • swack says:

@Lizzie, if you can watch all seasons (the original NCIS) up to the current one on Netflix. I don’t get to sit down at night and always watch what I want as I have to drive grandchildren here and there and it usually is on the nights I want to watch my shows (I have very few). Have you watched Arrow? The Flash is a spinoff of it. My oldest grandson turned me on to that one. It’s also on Netflix, up to the current season. He also said to watch The 100.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

@swack no way! Ok I’m definitely adding them to my list. I started watching Arrow now on Netflix too I’m on season 2, Diggle is my forever crush. Have you watched Daredevil? So good!

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

See I wouldn’t watch Miss America but I did watch the VS show for like…2 years a long time ago.

Which is weird I admit. I guess because there’s no pretense of having girls try to parcel together some choreographed response about global warming and world peace while grinning maniacally. Just walk, turn, walk.

      I loved the costumes.

    • HH says:

I actually liked it when there were genuinely curvy women. Tyra, Heidi, Naomi, Doutzen, to name a few. But now, not so much. Size 0 women just doesn’t sell lingerie for me. I mean, most have the benefit of being able to go braless.

    • V4Real says:

@Kitten What time do you plan on getting stoned so we can light up simultaneously except I will most likely be watching DVR recordings of My Haunted House and The Hunted with all the lights out.

      • Kitten says:

What is My Haunted House? I’m looking for scary things to watch whilst stoned after I’m caught up on TWD. Is it on Hulu/Netflix?

      • V4Real says:

It’s on A&E. People tell real life stories of being hunted by ghost. The Hunted and When Ghost Attack comes on a station called Destination America.

    • Kelly says:

And yet you clicked and commented

    • MarcelMarcel says:

Omfg! I thought Newsroom had been cancelled. You’ve blown my mind, Kitten. I’m going to go smoke weed and watch it. I recommend Blunt Talk- it’s a more surreal take on broadcast journalism and stars Patrick Stewart.

    • MND says:

I’m just here to say that I don’t care if you get stoned while you watch Newsroom.

    • knower says:

I just read this comment and I love you.

  8. Claudia says:

Nepotism. I read somewhere that 500 girls auditioned, 300 were shortlisted, and something like 43 are picked for the show. Out of the 43 spots, nearly two dozen or so were already allocated to current and new ‘Angels’, other big name models, etc.– which whittles down the actual number of spots to offer those who audition to peanuts. People like Kendall and Gigi got in because of their reality star status and nepotism– any so-called auditions were just a formality (although I admit Gigi makes a perfect VS model, Kendall definitely not). It’s a very unfair process. More than likely, the ‘Angels’ walking down the runway will primarily be praying mantis-thin, with little actual curves.

In the end, the whole thing is a superficial farce. Kudos to Rihanna and Jourdan Dunn for pulling out though, if rumors are true.

    • Monica says:

What nepotism? Who is Kendall related to at VS? Or Gigi for that matter? I don’t know why people have a such a hard time accepting that a large corporation wants to make money. Each one of these girls has tens of millions of followers. They instagram some outfit they wore on the show and literally millions of young girls storm the website or stores to get it. It’s as simple as that. VS is allowed to make money, right?

This Dunn or Jourdan girl, I don’t even know the name (and that alone should tell you everything) might be a high fashion model, but I certainly couldn’t match up the name to face. I think I’ve heard of her, but I think she’s the one that was on the cover of some magazine with Karlie Kloss – and that’s why I’ve seen this name before. NO. OTHER. REASON. Granted, I don’t keep up with models, but the big names I know. I guess hers wasn’t big enough for now. And I bet she doesn’t even come close in Insta followers to Kendall Jenner. Jenner had over 40 million the last time I checked, that’s twice the population of Australia..

There are some other girls on this show with names I’ve actually never heard of, but they’re usually from other countries. They include them to appeal to an international audience. It’s a big deal in smaller countries when one of their native models is doing the show, they have interviews all over the place with them in their home countries. I’m from one of them.. (although live in US)

      • hmph says:

        @Mary-Alic What a disgusting comment.
Some of the most successful supermodels are those with darker skin. In the golden years of VSF we had Naomi Campbell, Oluchi, Tyra Banks, Liya Kebede, and Jourdan is said to be the new/young Naomi and models for Burberry.
If anything, VS is sinking like the damn Titanic so clearly these models aren’t selling like they did pre 2005 when VS was worth something. And btw, Jourdan is very well known and has modeled for VS and walked their shows before so IDK what you are talking about.
Every year the ratings for the show keeps sinking and you should know by know that instagram followers does not indicate any number of sales, if anything, they are less likely to buy shit they can see for free. They’re not running out and buying chanel because teenage girls cannot afford it. These girls rather are living through these kendalls and gigi’s in a fantasy world.
The jenner’s/kardashians/hadid’s are being sponsored by their arab pimps in the UAE and it has been revealed that kim and her family PAYS magazines to put them on the cover. The vogue cover with kanye they bought 10000 + of copies themselves to cover the major loss.
The highest selling vogue US cover was Lupita’s so put that in your “non existing style” and smoke it.
Also the special vogue italia edition with all black models sold like crazy and was the highes selling vogue magazine ever.

      • Sorisun says:

        @Monica

Jourdan is not just some random model, she is one of the money girls in the Industry. She unlike Candle does not have to pay for Magazine Covers. The difference between Jourdan and Candle is huge. Jourdan is High Fashion and Candle is just a regular Instagram Model. Nothing special about her. Many Instagram Models have a lot of followers, that does not mean that they should walk a runway. Followers don’t say anything about the quality of a model, the fact that you believe that shows me you have no knowledge of the model/fashion Industry. Her Followers are not important, especially since most of them can’t afford the clothes she models.

      • Wolf says:

@Monica, you’re correct except that VS is not making as much money, these shows aren’t bringing in the viewers SPECIFICALLY because they’re pandering to the marketing base and forgetting that the people who tune in to these shows do so SPECIFICALLY for supermodels. Not Jenners or Hadids who are indeed where they are because of nepotism. You’d have to be blind to see that.

  9. InvaderTak says:

I don’t see ri being all that invested in who walks. I think it’s more about the fact that she doesn’t have music. If she did this woudld be a good time to drop a new single and get a bunch of publicity for it. I guess her new stuff must suck.

    • Jegede says:

      This.

I doubt she parlays her musical promo decisions, based on stuff like that.

It was likely the music is not yet ready.

    • Naya says:

Wouldnt she have known that she has nothing new before the week of the actual show? Besides, cancelling a booked show days to the event because you dont have a new single is incredibly silly. Its not like you would be the first performer to grace a stage with your older material. Theres something else behind this.

    • hmph says:

She sounds like a yodeling donkey anyway and she probably knows her music sucks or sounds the same as her last album, again, her yodeling over a repetitive beat. Yawn.

  10. Kimmy says:

I don’t know….Gigi was made to be a VS model. She probably worked Kendall into her contract.

  11. claire says:

I hope Gigi has improved her runway walk. Recently saw a compilation of her bumbling lumbering tripping over her feet runway walk. It was atrocious. Pretty girl that should probably stick to print.

  12. notthatgirl says:

I watched the show last year and was quite surprised at how underwhelming it all was. The show felt subdued and even the big models were nervous wrecks.

  13. Dani says:

I don’t know about money being the issue. Lily Aldridge is booked to wear the million dollar bra or whatever and she’s from the original VS crew with Adriana, Alessandra, Doutzen etc.

    • Hannah says:

No she’s not. She started in 2009, but she’s one of the most veterans left. Angels come and go, women age, have babies, move on to different aspects of their modeling careers. Idk why people are trying to make this drama.

  14. hmph says:

VS fashion shows used to be huge. After 2005 it all went down hill.
Even the pink section in 2005 looked luxurious, in fact, all their lingerie looked sexy and expensive and you wanted to buy them all! Now even their underwear looks cheap and tacky.
The production used to be huge and exciting and you felt magic! Back in 2001 they shut down times square due to the show and the traffic.
I mean, they used to have cabaret dancers, marching bands, a live choir, and great A list performers. I remember Sting, Destiny’s child (they were huge back then), and they were memorable models and sections. The “bang bang you shot me down” in 2005 with Dita Von Tease in the background stripping, Naomi Campbell’s walks, Tyra Banks dancing flamenco (lmao), and you had all these amazing models like Adriana Lima in her prime.
Models had different haircuts and hair colors and were of different sizes.
Now everyone looks the same, same long slightly waved hair with a mid parting, most are blond, and have the same straight up and down shape.
    No variations = boring show.
Everything looks cheap now, it’s like they hardly make any effort anymore to make their shows unique and exciting.
I feel like VSFS is pretty much done, I really don’t think the shows are going to exist anymore in the near future. I think they will keep selling their cheap material bra’s and underwear to teens and use instagram and other social media, but the shows…I think they’re done.

    • Josephine says:

I’ve been wondering if the store is done, too. The seems to have a perpetual sale and I’ve heard the quality has decreased dramatically. The one in our mall is always empty.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

From last I read VS sales have been declining year after year. Ironically that pretty perfect body blonde angel crap is what did them in with many of the younger groups they’re trying to appeal to considering them uncool and older customers are tired of them not accommodating larger sizes.

        @hmph

Those were around the years I watched, which might explain why it seemed so much more exciting and fun than all the watered down crap I’ve been seeing from them the last couple years.

      • Veronica says:

It really depends on the region. The store I work at does extremely well and is above LY sales this year. And for retail, they treatment their employees fairly well. Some of the women I work with make serious bank on commission, and even non-commission employees have sales incentives that result in higher pay if store performance is up.

I do think they’re going to have to start expanding their market at some point. Sexy women make lingerie look good, but the male gaze is not what attracts women personally. They’d do better to pull in some bigger models in the future.

  15. Liz says:

In that photo with the three of them, it’s obvious Jourdan looks like a seasoned model. She has a regal bearing. Gigi doesn’t have that yet but she is undoubtedly gorgeous. Actually her sister, Bella does have a regal way about her. Also think she’s much more interesting looking and more beautiful. The third girl looks NOTHING like a model.

    • Josephine says:

My take-away as well. I thought it the perfect example picture to provide to people who keep arguing that she’s model-material. Pretty for sure, but not a model.

  16. AG-UK says:

I think their budget is about $20m-30m and they work on this show all year. I never got the appeal although I did go to the one last year but all the models look the same blink and I couldn’t tell the difference. My husband kept saying who are these people???

    • Tulsa says:

      20 – 30 million?!….Amazing – All that money and it still looks like a High School pageant/play.

      • Veronica says:

They play the show year round in the higher tier level stores, so it serves as visual marketing for the designer level stuff we get in. When you look at it from that perspective, it makes more sense budget-wise.

  17. dana says:

Yes, I heard Jourdan was pulled after being the most popular and experienced, then Rihanna pulled out. Funny no one is covering this.

  18. Tippi says:

Of course the quality of the models will plummet when the earnings are reduced to only a fraction of what they used to be. The industry has changed with social media and reality TV, that’s where all the marketing campaigns are now.

Kendall and Gigi though… Ugh…. I remember the old VS shows with beauties like Naomi Cambell, now it’s girls who look like you or your next door neighbour, ordinary girls, nothing wrong with their looks but nothing eye catching, beautiful or appealing about them. You’d walk past them in the street without a second glance. The VS shows should just stop now, they used to be impressive, now they’re an example of how the modelling industry has collapsed.

  19. Veronica says:

Yeah, I’m not surprised about the pay issue. I work for VS, and we all heard the fairly blunt reasons for why Kloss left. Express nabbed her after she left us, and from what I heard, she made BANK with them. (This being said, I was always surprised by her presence on the VS runway. She’s not what I picture as a lingerie body.)

Also lol at $100,000 being considered bad pay for what is essentially a slightly elevated form of stripping.

Jourdan’s the real loss, IMO. Stunning woman, and she brings a lot of personality to the runway.

  20. tabasco says:

Vicky desperately needs a mercy killing at this point. Once upon a time, they had real lingerie, some nice clothes, a good catalog, models like Frederique, Yasmin Ghauri, Stephanie Seymour. Now? They’ve discontinued the entire clothing line, which was sucking anyway, the only “lingerie” left really is all that PINK crap and super-padded bras for teenagers. And they’re using two “models” who are born of reality TV shows. And this godawful annual trainwreck of a “fashion show.” VS started going downhill years ago. It’s time to put the whole thing out of its misery. Leo will just have to order his girlfriends elsewhere.

    • saywhatwhen says:

Yes. On their website they used to carry some really nice sweaters and sweater dresses. Used to be my “go to” place for chunky knits. No more. I have no idea what’s happened to VS.

      • tabasco says:

Yep. Same here. They used to carry unlined, non-padded proper satin bras in all sorts of pretty colors. You could get a proper bridal trousseau there. Cute dresses. This was in the 90s. At one point they started (very briefly) carrying some other brands like Alice and Olivia-ish stuff and their price points jumped up, then that went away and things started to slide towards the trashy, PINK took off. I think they saw the success of PINK and basically re-branded without changing names. Every time I see someone wearing that PINK crap, I cringe and want my non-padded satin bras back!

  21. MND says:

It’s like a celebrity episode of the Bachelor with Leo pondering which model to select as his new girlfriend. Hopefully he’ll part of the commentary team provinding his valuable insights.

How’s Victoria’s Secret doing businesswise? At one point they were having problems because their insistence on concentrating on the high school/college demographic of shoppers was actually turning off older shoppers (who would buy pricier items) who didn’t want the word PINK written across their butt. But with this lineup it looks like they’ve gone all in with younger shoppers – why else would they hire and feature Kendall Jenner so prominently? I wonder how that’s working out for them.

    • tabasco says:

they’ve gone all in. they recently stopped all production on their basically their entire clothing line. I thought I read that the clothing was profitable, but I guess they want to put all their chips on the teen/padded bra/PINK crowd, which I agree would explain Kendall. it used to be a hell of a lot more sophisticated brand.

Businesswise, VS is rumored to be on its last legs. VS used to be part of the The Limited Brands company that owned, at various points, The Limited, Structure, Express, Lane Bryant, VS, Bath and Body Works, Land Bryant, Abercrombie & Fitch, NY & Company. Now, after various spin-offs, I think (somebody correct this if I’ve got outdated info!) VS is part of a company that still owns VS, Bath and Body Works, and Bendel. That sounds like a lot, but Bendel is one store and Bath & Body Works is meh. VS going Full Teenager might turn out to be a move that makes them money on the current large market of tweens, but kills them in the not-too-distant future.

      • Veronica says:

VS is part of the Limited Brands corporation, so it’s linked to Bath and Body, UGG, and a few others. Not sure about Bendel, I’d have to check.

The decision to pare down the line happened right around the time the new CEO came in. They wanted to focus the brand and cut down on the costs associated with diverse marketing. You can still buy a decent amount of clothing on the online store, but most of the in-store stuff is related to lounge and night wear. I do think there’s a definite shift toward the younger demographic with PINK, which is fine in cases where they keep in separate. My store sells enough that it could afford to split PINK into its own store and keep VS separate, which I think is the wiser business approach because there’s a definite gap in the age demographics.

I actually like Gigi Haddid. I think she fits in well with VS–she has more of a voluptuous figure than the stick-straight Kendall Jenner and actually seems more of a throwback to the old models rather than the newer VS walkers like Karlie Kloss who seem more fashion runway. I was actually surprised to see her doing more fashion runways because I always saw her as a Victoria Secret/Sports Illustrated type ala Christie Brinkley and Heidi Klum rather than a Gisele who moved between the 2. She has a pretty face and a good body so I think this is a good niche for her. And I don’t think of her as a ‘reality girl’. Her mom is on Real Housewives of BH and Gigi was on there briefly a handful of times–she wasn’t a regular by any means like Kendall. But I really liked her in the few glimpses we got–she seemed shy and sweet and was always polite to everyone. So I root for her. 🙂

    • tabasco says:

Gigi is not a reality girl in the same sense as Kendall, but neither of them would be getting the contracts they are without their connections. Gigi comes from serious money and connections. So, while not a Kardashian, she’s seen, as Kendall is, as someone who didn’t really “earn” her career. Both have pretty much had it handed to them.

I think it will be interesting to see, if Kaia Gerber eventually goes fully into modeling, if she will get the same “you didn’t earn it” disdain as a Kendall or Gigi, or if she gets a pass b/c she’s Cindy Crawford’s daughter and that’s all the modeling cred you need?

The show is for teenage boys & some lesbians. So – well. No.

  25. M.A.F. says:

Why is this even a “thing”? No reason why this should even be on the air.

  26. Barbara says:

VS has lowered their image to be by hiring that spoiled brat Kendull

    • fiona says:

couldn’t agree more. Not buying any more of their crap because of her. I’ve had enough with that family,

  27. Myst says:

    What basic looking ‘models’…yuck!

  28. Naddie says:

They’re all a bunch of overpaid people anyway. I’m not gonna waste my electric energy watching this shit, and judging by the comments, I’m not the only one.

  29. Alarmjaguar says:

Wait, but isn’t America going to be watching the Republican debate tonight?

  30. 7-11's Hostage says:

“The models aren’t getting paid the big bucks. Even though the VS show has become more and more lucrative for VS corporate, VS isn’t sharing the wealth with the models. ” That’s pretty standard, isn’t it? Someone can correct me if I’m wrong about that. Anyway, I think what’s more concerning is that they give their ad money to some highly questionable, though very lucrative, projects. Pretty typical for corporations, I guess. ETA: RiRi is too pretty, does not need to be on this mess.

  31. Liz says:

I just had to share this. I think Bella Hadid is drop dead gorgeous. She also has an elegance about her. I thought she might have had a nose job, but really who cares with her results. What I didn’t realize is the nose with her new lips completely transformed her from a cute girl to gorgeous. Just found these old photos:
    http://beautyeditor.ca/2015/10/09/bella-hadid-before-and-after
I am stunned at the dramatic results. Not trying to shame her at all, but just WOW!

    • Naddie says:

Shocked here. I’d like to know how these people would look like if they had no money, or how we peasants would look like if we had their “resources” (and I ain’t talking about the surgery, just the professional/expensive make up and clothes). I agree about the elegance, she doesn’t look cheap like her sister.

  32. Lillylizard says:

They don’t care about the low pay because being a VS model ups their fee during yatch season.

  33. Nibbi says:

    no beautiful amazing doutzen??
VS YOU ARE DEAD TO ME

  34. SKF says:

Actually I think Gigi is perfect for VS and I’m happy that she’s bringing boobs back to their catwalk!!

  35. EM says:

All this hoo-haa over overpriced lingerie, modelled by underweight models, made in sweat shops.

  36. Wolf says:

The inclusion of Kendall Jenner in any runway-type show immediately degrades the production or brand. They’ll learn soon enough.
