Who was the best dressed lady at the NYC ‘Carol’ premiere: Cate or Rooney?

Here are some photos from last night’s NYC premiere of Carol. Did you know Kyle Chandler has a supporting role in this? It’s true. He plays Cate Blanchett’s estranged husband. Sarah Paulson also has a supporting role. So, everyone came out for the premiere and there were some interesting fashion moments, as you can see. Cate’s two-tone dress is Lanvin and I really don’t like it. To me, that color looks like bile/vomit. I like that Cate has been changing it up, but this dress is not the one.

I actually think my favorite look might be Rooney Mara’s leather-and-lace Chanel. She’s SO tiny and if this was on a curvier girl, it probably would have looked trashy. But on Rooney, she looks like a little doll.

The biggest WTF is probably Sarah Paulson in this Etro gown. It looks like it came from the 1970s! I mean, it’s WTF but I also think Paulson wears it well.

Meanwhile, Cate and Rooney have been doing the promotional rounds, and one of the most interesting interviews was this USA Today piece. Cate points out that in the 1950s, male homosexual relationships were against the law, but lesbian relationships weren’t even understood on a legal/illegal level. Cate said: “There wasn’t even an acceptance or an awareness of relationships between women — it was in the realm of the hysteric… [it] was just a female dysfunction. The fact that they’re women, they have an added layer of prejudice to push through and be heard. It doesn’t even warrant being a crime, what they feel for each other.” That’s interesting, isn’t it?

Cate has also been in talks to star in Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, a book I have not read. Is it any good? And it’s looking more and more like Cate will be playing Lucille Ball in a bio-pic. Aaron Sorkin is writing the script and Sorkin came out to this Carol premiere last night.

Nobody. None of them get me excited.

  2. Liz says:

Rooney has the nicer dress out of the pair.I’m not sure about the raccoon eye makeup but her skin looks flawless.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Cate always goes for the gimmick.

I want to take Rooney by the shoulders and tell her stop slouching, smile, get a grip.

    Sarah, no.

Nothing noteworthy in the fashion area, I just wanted to say omg Rooney looks so tiny! This reminded me of how shocked I was to see how Amanda Seyfried got so tiny during her “Les Mis” time, and it makes me sad to think all these actors need to keep this really, REALLY tiny figure to appear “normal-ish” (whatever that is) on tv. I know I don’t know if this is the case with Rooney, or with Amanda, but Amanda used to be a fuller girl, when she was younger. I know when people grow up they loose that baby look, but it strikes me as really .. sad . To live in an industry so focused on a weird concept of “beauty”.
And when I see JLaw I see what she means by being “normal” sized comparing to her peers. And she’s also a tiny girl.
Ahhh. I’m not trying to body-shame or concern-troll anyone, I don’t know if that’s the case with any of the aforementioned actresses. Maybe it’s not the case, maybe it is. Who knows…

Yes!!! Rooney was fuller in The Social Network and it made her look so much more youthful. Now she’s like an Olsen cousin.

    • Original T.C. says:

Rooney is still tiny and in goth mode because she’s staying in character as Lizbeth until she gets that sequel filmed. Even if it takes 20years darn it!!! LOL!

  5. Tiffany says:

Boy….they look really excited to be there. I mean, ecstatic.

  6. Pandy says:

Does Rooney ever not look like a sad-eyed waif with bad hair?? Seriously, Morticia, change it up. Such a severe look on a gaunt girl. Waste of her youthful beauty.

  7. InvaderTak says:

Rooney looks like she’s about to snap her leg in that one picture. It’s curved weirdly. It probably just the camera distortion but still.

  8. lenje says:

    KYLE CHANDLER!!!!!!!

Ok, ok, I’m calm, I’m calm. KYLEEEEEE!!!!!

  9. cr says:

I’m pretty sure that Sarah P is wearing the wallpaper from my friend’s 70’s era living room.

  10. smee says:

I love Cate’s dress – the draping, the nude optical illusion and the color. Age-appropriate sexiness.

Mara’s demeanor makes me think she should look-up KStew – so slouchy and rebellious.

Sarah’s dress is a straight-up 1970s “hostess dress” and it is in no way flattering.

    • teacakes says:

yeah, I love Cate’s dress too – the colour looks great on her,and it’s a colour that normally looks good on no one!

Rooney needs to stand up straighter, the whole ‘I slouch because I’m too cool’ thing gets played out by the age of 25, surely that’s long enough to figure out your posture! It ruins the dress.

  11. Carol says:

I didn’t love Bernadette, but I accept that I am probably in the minority.

    • BrandyAlexander says:

I didn’t really know what to think of it. It was… weird. But I just decided to enjoy the hilarity of many of the scenes, and it made it more enjoyable. I would totally see the movie, just to see what they do with it.

  12. Wendy says:

Cate’s dress rules! I love it so much! And I love the colour too. She can rock shades of green like nobodies business.

  13. lila fowler says:

Shocked that Rooney isn’t wearing a Native American headdress.

  14. CAD says:

My love for Cate is so strong, but I just can’t with this dress… Even on her amazing self, it looks like the draped dress has slipped down and she’s inadvertently showing the control knickers she has on underneath.

  15. SusanneToo says:

No, I did not know Kyle Chandler was in Carol, but I’m happy to find out. I’ve liked him ever since Early Edition.

  16. Kristen says:

I actually kind of like Sarah’s dress, but it’s both print heavy and shiny – it would look better if it were shorter and not maxi length.

  17. elicaroline says:

I do not like Cate’s dress. My thought when I saw the first photo was – why is she wearing her girdle/shapewear exposed? The nude/cut out combo is no good.

  18. Tig says:

All you can see of Rooney are those heavily made up eyes-the dress fades against that. I like Cate’s dress and esp her shoes. And Kyle Chandler- such a good actor! Hope he and Cate have many scenes together.

  19. tealily says:

    Smile, Rooney!

On second glance, smile everybody! Sheesh!
