Duchess Kate wears £325 Reiss coat & jeans for Wales events: cute or meh?

First of all, the children in these photos are absolutely adorable. You guys know I’m not even a kid-person (I prefer the company of the elderly to children) but some of the kids in these photos are so freaking cute, I got a little pang. These are photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Wales today. They are on an official day-trip to Caernarfon, where they scheduled back-to-back events, like a trip to a photography exhibit run by Mind.

Kate actually wore PANTS. For an official outing! And her bangs aren’t in her eyes! It’s a Thanksgiving miracle. Of course, the pants are skinny jeans and we can barely even see them. She tucked them into moderately-heeled knee-high boots (thank God she didn’t wear sky-high heels while meeting with children again). It looks like she’s wearing just a simple black turtleneck underneath her £325 green Reiss coat. The best surprise is that Kate wore a jaunty ponytail and we can’t see her bangs at all. Do I think the pony is too high and puffy? Sure. Do I think Kate has “helmet head”? Yes. But after the bangs catastrophe during Kate’s speech on Wednesday, I’m grateful for this small mercy.

If she wanted to really go casual, you know what would have looked great here? A peacoat! Kate owns millions of coats and some of them are double-breasted (extra buttons), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in a traditional, hip-length, fisherman-style peacoat.

    Coat is fabulous

    • Eleonor says:

      +1 !!!

    • Betti says:

The coat is lovely – Reiss do very nice coats but I refused to shop there because of their no in-store refund policy (you only get a refund if you buy online). Its a policy that I despise as I hate shop changing rooms as they are too small and I hate queuing for them. 🙁

      • boredblond says:

Strange policy..do they at least give store credit for returns?

Oh, and I think she looks great here.

      • Betti says:

^ yes you get a credit note but there are a few stores here in the UK that have that policy. Bennetton is another chain that does it.

      • Shirleygail says:

I also won’t change in a dressing room. Decades ago, at the Bay, in Montreal, when I was a very young woman a guy was caught with cameras in the fitting rooms. It scarred me for life…I cannot/will not try clothes on in stores. I purchase, bring home, try on at my leisure, and keep or return as needed. I’d never shop in a store without a solid return policy…or, I’d go to the manager, explain and ask for special circumstances before I purchased anything, and get a written guarantee I could return it for money back. I’ve done that successfully twice.

      • neutral says:

If what you buy in the uk is faulty they are obliged by law to give you a refund.

      • holly says:

We have much better consumer laws in Australia. All stores are obliged to accept returns. Some will offer a credit or exchange, but things are definitely weighed in the buyer’s favour.

      • Cricket says:

that return policy is crazy! here in the states, Nordstrom will take almost anything back! Worn shoes, out of the box, no receipt. if they sell it, they’ll return it no questions asked. I had purchased a pair of boots from there and after wearing for a few months, the bottom started coming apart. I was hoping they could fix it – glue the bottom but they said bring them in and they would swap out for a new pair. I was shocked!

    • seesittellsit says:

This . . . I’d kill to wear it. Love the boots, too. And I see she’s growing the bangs in rapidly – been there done that gone.

    • kaiko says:

      Nope, boob dart(s)…See below….

      • C-No says:

(Late to the party, didn’t read all the comments, sorry if this has been addressed already.) I don’t think it’s a dart. I think it’s stitching to allow a lapel to drape correctly. It goes past her waist. I think if that button was undone it would drape open along that line. I have coats with similar stitching – not exactly like that, but same idea.

Also those are definitely pants of some sort. They bunch up on her knees. The material of the boot’s shaft is stretchy (which I personally looks cheap as h*ll).

      • vava says:

I can see now that is not a dart really……………but it just looks really lame with that collar/lapel styled the way she is wearing it. I don’t care for the way she’s wearing this coat, although I don’t mind the color, it’s safe. The deal is though, it doesn’t fit her properly just now. Look at how everything is pulling in the bust area. Given my limited tailoring experience, I personally would not walk out the door in something like that —- especially if I was a high profile Duchess!

      • hazel says:

I took a good look at several photos–this isn’t a dart, but a continuation of the button placket. The coat is fitting Kate closer than before, so it’s pulling a bit.

      • kaiko says:

Hey thanks for your input ladies! I feel a bit silly dissecting Kate Middleton’s coat actually, it’s not life or death…it’s just, and I’m sure the majority of us here feel at least a tinge of it, the old “if I were Kate, what would I do (wear, say, feel, etc)” because let’s face it, she’s redefined being born under a lucky star, amiright?
And if I had thousands at my disposal for clothing, better believe I’d be looking a lot more like Letizia…simple but well executed cuts, rich fabrics, timeless sihouettes and pieces that can be put together for a variety of looks, ya know?
Then again Letizia didn’t dress so professionally when she was still princess and her kids were younger (not to mention Spain’s economic issues)
I’m sure Kate will learn with time? right? 😉 Yes, let’s say that.

      • Annie says:

Why is no one talking about her invisible/visable scar on her head? It’s back again and it looks so much like a weave.

    • khaveman says:

Nice tailoring on the coat and I like the subdued color. The back panels are a nice touch.

      • kaiko says:

really? am I the only one seeing that extra dart on the right side of her chest, which doesn’t match on the left…maybe bad pic angle? i always thought the sign of a good tailor was not being able to notice a garment was tailored….meh, bfd it’s a coat, right? 🙂 it’s friday, time for some wine! :0)

      • LAK says:

        Kaiko: not sure only one.

However, the coat’s collar is a drapped shawl type collar with the option to wear it the way she is doing.

The button to the inner collar (left side collar) is on the reverse side of that dart. At the point where the dart ends. It matches the button to the outer collar (right side collar) that you see.

      • vava says:

Kaiko, you’re not alone. The tailoring on this coat is not stellar.

    • noway says:

I generally don’t like her clothing, but I always have coat envy. Her stylist should specialize in coats only, with this outfit she looks good.

  2. tracking says:

    Very cute.

  3. InvaderTak says:

    OMG I want the coat

    • kaiko says:

With or without boob darts? 🙂

      • vava says:

As mentioned above, what you are referring to illustrates a distinct tailoring issue that Reiss has ignored in their design. I agree with you completely, this coat FAILS when it is worn the way the Duchess wore it. Perphaps if she unbuttoned that top button and let the lapels fall as designed – it might be perfect.

      • kaiko says:

thanks vava, i know i know, i just had a strong visceral reaction to the design+price tag….its been rough but im working through it with a team of talented and fantastically ripped male massage therapists.

        no…not really…oh but to be a cambridge for a day though…*le sigh*

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Thank god the bangs are gone. I couldn’t muster up the will to live if I had to look at those again today. I think she looks nice, like the coat, don’t personally care for jeans stuffed in boots, but she still looks nice.

      • HH says:

Are we sure that she’s wearing jeans/pants? And not opaque pantyhose? Her boots are very snug and that means her jeans/pants would have to be tight as a second skin. I know we talk about her jeggings, but even this seems like amother level of tight.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Well, no, I’m not sure. I thought I read that but you can’t see them.

      • Caroline says:

She is definitely wearing jeans. You see her in them later on that day when she is abseiling. See Daily Mail.

  5. Betti says:

Please stop praising her for ‘recycling’ clothes – if they were truly thrifty then they wouldn’t turn up to the event in The Queens helicopter which will have cost the taxpayer 3 figures.

Oh and Normal Bill – carrying a folder to the helicopter doesn’t make you look ‘interested and engaged’ about the event/cause. It makes you look like the twit you are.

    • Spugzbunny says:

3 figures? If that is correct, how much do you think it will cost them to drive or even get the train from London to North Wales? it would be a couple of hundred in petrol alone.

      • Betti says:

A return train ticket is about £70 each, petrol costs for the day for 2 cars travelling to the different locations would be about a couple of hundred.

The type of fuel for the helicopter is not cheap plus there are the pilots wages and various other costs i.e. insurance…. Travelling by helicopter is NOT cheap and thrifty.

      • Spugzbunny says:

Point being – I think 3 figures is highly unlikely and if it is – the difference of say £700 is the least of their overspending. I suspect it’s much more like 5k round trip. I know that’s the amount it costs to send an air ambulance up.

      • notasugarhere says:

A secured helo flight from London (or Anmer) to Wales for £5000? No where close. William’s recent “secret” jaunt to spy headquarters was £8000, and that was a shorter trip.

One of her trips (2013 to Grimsby) via helicopter was estimated at £25,000 each way. The press all took the train, she did the helicopter, and was late for the engagement due to the weather. Yes, those helicopter trips really are that expensive.

      • LAK says:

it’s four figures round trip. do you remember when William used the Queen’s flight to visit spy HQ in Gloucestershire for a private visit that became official after he was presented with the £8000 bill?

      • Betti says:

^NOTA – i meant to type 4/5 figures. Thanks for those figures – i thought it was something around that amount.

    • MinnFinn says:

Betti, Good point about their hideous carbon footprint. And she is absolutely not thrifty about clothes. Year-to-date she has debuted about $61,000 in new clothes and worked 37 days. A few days ago I found a blogger (katemiddletonreview) who is tracking this data if anyone wants to see the details and latest stats.

    • maeve says:

Lol. At least Normal Bill can’t be accused of wearing new clothes. His casual clothes look like Prince Charles’ hand-me-downs from the ’90’s.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

Well, Normal Bill’s vain wife burns up all of their clothes’ budget so there is nothing left to buy him something nice.

    • daisy says:

      So agree with your comments
I like the coat but she never looks regal her over the top
facial expressions are awful.. why cant she act like a grown up
but like she said she had a pampered upbringing……
she has been sheltered beyond belief not having a career..

      • kaiko says:

Yeah, she overdoes it big time with the fake bubbliness. It might be an over reaction to knowing she has to look engaged for the cameras combined with just not really knowing how to be herself anymore. Or she could just have some stellar pharmaceuticals on her side, um….you know to help with social anxiety… 😉

  6. Enn says:

I wear my ponytails “too high and puffy.” I want that coat.

    • Loulou says:

Why do we only talk about her hair when he has the worst hair ever?

      • Shambles says:

Why do we talk about JUST her hair? That bald spot though 😉

      • Merritt says:

Do you want him to shave his head? Or to spray on some fake hair so you can ridicule him more?

      • Scal says:

It’s genetic. He’s balding. It’s a man in his late 30’s. My dad was balding at that age. It’s not awful style. It would be worse if he tried to hide it via a combover ala. Donald Trump or wearing a hair piece.

Honestly. Other than a toupe or shaving his head-what are you looking for?

      • LAK says:

Scal: He may not look it, but William is 33yrs.

      • Natalie says:

Well, he could get rid of the comb over and just buzz his hair. It’s a bit unfair that we comment so much on Kate’s hair and here’s William walking around with his baby bird fuzz.

    • woodstock_schulz says:

I sooo want that coat. I just have to win the lottery first…

  7. zimmer says:

I agree about the pea coat.

    • bluhare says:

Me too. I don’t like this one. The collar looks like it isn’t supposed to be buttoned over there, but you can when it’s cold out and you want to cover up more.

      • kaiko says:

ugh, I’m offended by this coat actually. at first glance it’s ok but once you look closer, it’s very budget looking trying to be trendy with pieced together cheap material, like something a teen would wear from a mall chain store. the darts along her breast area are distracting but then again, i have an extreme hatred of darts, just ask my mom (she was a seamstress/designer).

    • MinnFinn says:

If she wore a pea coat she would style it in a traditional theme-y way which necessitates pairing it with white wide leg sailor pants, stripey shirt and a Popeye hat.

      • Caroline says:

        Oh, would she? What knowledge!

      • notasugarhere says:

She’s merely commenting on Kate Middleton’s well-known theme dressing. If this had been related to yachting, we would have seen a navy pea coat and blue and white striped shirt.

      • Caroline says:

Well todays outfit was her theme dressing for pre-abseiling because that was what she did next.

      • notasugarhere says:

If she’d been going with her usual theme dressing, who knows? We might have seen a shirt with little birds or kites on it.

      • kaiko says:

Spandex superhero suit with matching Burberry Kate-cape? Perfect for abseiling!
You know, she could have some fun with her children’s charities showing up in costume! The kids would love it, she’d get spectacular photo coverage of smiling Kate/laughing, happy peasant children and major “children’s princess” points from the press and public. No written public speeches, she can make clowny faces and say silly things and be loved by all. Total win.
No thanks is needed Mr. Knauf, this one is free… but the next one might cost ya!

  8. DarkSparkle says:

Part of me feels she’s finally getting her poop in a group, regarding work and expectations. The more cynical part of me wonders what holidays and skeletons are around the bend.

    • Betti says:

Holidays yes, skeletons probably not as the press won’t run anything about Willy Boy (‘the protected one’). They will be saving it all up for when the time is ripe.

    • bluhare says:

Poop in a group? LOL!!! 😀

    • MinnFinn says:

This is her flurry of activity before she begins her annual 2 month winter hibernation which starts in November. She re-emerges every year in Mustique around the first week of February.

      • Liberty says:

        This.

Plus—– so far all I see anyway are a dinner, and a movie premiere, new dress for remembrance cocktails, and they picked a “concern” for her that allows her to

        (a) suggest that Billy had a difficult upbringing so sympathize with his laziness and truculence, lest we forget! (because seeing Harry solider on charmingly would make us wonder about Billy). Poor kids! their parents did it all. (Chuck! who buys her clothes. Diana! No longer around, Mama Carole will heal Billy! so give her a title!)

        (b) keep pointing to “me, kids, I have kids, pay our fees, we have kids, kids, so even if we vacay constantly, and do squat all but read prepped speeches poorly though we have a degree and every sort of assistance known to mankind and are 33, we are at unskilled teen level — kids! We had kids. See? See the nannies raising our kids? Kids. Where is my clothing allowance? I’ll be in the gym. Kids.”

      • Olenna says:

Liberty, you have summed up this farce so well. I was just starting to give her the benefit of the doubt all over again until I reluctantly watched that video. What I saw and heard was a *Me, it’s all about Me* message, little research and preparation, and glaring immaturity. And, it confirmed, at least for me, that the media was prepping the battlefield by writing about her fear of public speaking so that we’d all cut her some slack after the latest “speeches” (actually readings) were made. My goodness, Jason is definitely on a roll.

      • Caroline says:

BRF all take long winter break. Queen goes to Sandringham just after mid-December and stays there until after the anniversary of her father’s death which was on 6th February. He actually died at Sandringham. I think she sometimes now stays on a few days past 6 February. I think Philip and Charles shoot quite a lot at Sandringham in January. Apart from the Queen now sometimes staying at Sandringham for a few days after 6 February, this has always been her pattern.

The Queen goes to Windsor for Easter and I think the whole court moves to Windsor for a whole month shortly after this. I think she also stays at Windsor for a week when Ascot is on.

Some of the Royal Family have a week in Scotland in July doing engagements.

The Queen moves to Scotland, to Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, towards the end of July. For the first couple of weeks she stays in a big farmhouse or similar on the estate (Charles and Diana used this farmhouse) because Balmoral is open to the public until end of July and then it requires sorting. She stays in Balmoral until beginning of October. During this time she will do the odd engagement in Scotland or go back to London for a night if something important but nothing more. It is tradition for rich/country families to move to Scotland late summer for the grouse shooting etc. This has always been her pattern throughout her reign. In the days when she had Britannia she used to start the Scottish holiday with a cruise round the British coastline. The Queen Mother would be in residence for a shortish holiday in the Castle of Mey at the beginning of August and the royals would arrange to be there for the 4th when the QM had her birthday. Prince Charles goes to Castle of Mey that particular week now.

      • Tina says:

The Queen is 89 and still did 393 engagements last year. Prince Charles did 533. As far as I’m concerned, they can take all of the holidays they want if they’re going to keep up that work ethic. Kate, with her padded 91, needs to do some hard graft before she can take two winter months off.

      • wolfie says:

Carolyn, that was a great essay – I find royal snobbery so interesting.

      • FLORC says:

        Liberty wins!

      • notasugarhere says:

The others work to earn their vacation, and continue to do work behind the scenes wherever they are.

HM did 393 engagements plus all the royal boxes work. Prince Philip (94) did 273 after hospitalization and serious abdominal surgery. He also continues as second-in-command with active land management of Sandringham, Balmoral, and Windsor (handing off to Charles). Charles (66) did 533 PLUS all the work with Princes Trust, The Duchy, and taking over land management from his father. Anne (64), 528 PLUS running Gatcomb and the all the horse trials, etc.

When you look at what is really going on, W&K’s workload looks even worse. Bill doesn’t appear to really work at EAAA anymore, and twitter and photo sightings show she isn’t home 24/7 with the kids.

    • zinjojo says:

I think Poor Jason has started reading the comments here, and is using them as a how-to guide. Either that, or they’re just trying to get their numbers up before vacation time.

      • antipodean says:

Ha ha, zinjojo, I was thinking the same thing. I am sure part of poorJason’s brief is to peruse a lot of internet sites, so he can gauge the prevailing mood of opinion. He could do much worse than to use CB for such a purpose. In all the sites I have read, none seem to have such a varied and informed agenda as CB. Despite its nomenclature there is always a high standard of opinion, and rarely the low brow ignorant writing you find on lesser sites, IMO.
Having said that, poor Billy is really getting thin on top, the comb over is tragic, he should just get a buzz cut and be done with it. Also, can they not find better fitting trousers for him to wear. I really do not want to see which side he dresses!

      • Cricket says:

I think for Christmas, William should just go for it and steal Jason Statham’s style. That includes donating that tragic navy suit of his which I loathe. Does this man child ever wear anything but blue? even his casual cashmere sweaters are all blue! Was that his mummy’s favorite color?

      • Deedee says:

He even showed up in a blue cashmere sweater to paint the day he sneaked in on Harry’s charity appearance. So, he’s now down to 49 of those blue sweaters after he got a little paint drip on that one.

    • aaa says:

William and Kate are not the only royals who take multiple and lengthy vacations/stay-cations, it is a BRF tradition. Given her age and lengthy service I certainly don’t begrudge Queen Elizabeth her lengthy stay-cations at Balmoral or Sandringham but this was a pattern she established when she was much younger.

I also don’t begrudge William and Kate taking off for Mustique and/or going skiing, again typical royal behavior. I don’t consider them workhorses nor deserving of rapturous praise, but considering that William has another job, they have two small children, they carried out several engagements during this fall season and will undertake a tour to India early next year, I don’t have a grievance with them at the present time.

      • anne_000 says:

Taking that argument to the next step, anytime any BRF member goes on vacation, then W&K should too.

The main goal should always be to equalize the number of vacations the rest of the BRF members take in total and have W&K match that.

But of course, work events should not have to be matched, because that’s not fun. Never mind that QE2 has worked much and steadily since early adulthood. We should begrudge her for taking vacations.

      • wolfie says:

Their tour of India sounds like a wonderful, wonderful vacation. New clothes, presents (jewels?), and lots of attention and opportunities for photo PR. I’m sure they will have Diana comparisons and lots of people showing up on the site to say what a fantastic job they did, smiling and greeting.

      • Natalie says:

The Red boxes follow the Queen wherever she is so she’s always working in a way. And she has people up to stay at Balmoral. I think she’s part of the old style where you only stayed in London for a few months out of the year rather than being away from London counting as a vacation.

      • notasugarhere says:

Not a peep about William being at EAAA for awhile, so him still working there “part-time as time allows” is probably moot at this point. Their multiple household staff, plus two dozen office staff, mean they are supposed to be able to work much more than they are.

When W&K work as hard as 89-year-old HM, and as hard as she did when she had small children, THEN they can take as much vacation as HM does.

      • aaa says:

        @anne_000,
I specifically stated that given her age and lengthy service I do not begrudge the Queen taking her Balmoral and Sandringham stay-cations.

I don’t think that “the next step” of my comment is that anytime a member of the BRF goes on vacation that means Will and Kate can too.

I think well of Queen Elizabeth but I noticed that she either increases her workload or does more “photo op” type work as the time approaches for her, Philip and the corgis to decamp to Balmoral, so William and Kate are neither the first nor only royals to increase their visible royal work prior to vacationing.

I don’t assume that the Cambridges vacation significantly more than other royals just that their actions get more attention. Princess Anne has a yacht, Prince Andrew has a home in Switzerland, and dribs and drabs have gotten out about Charles and Camilla’s vacationing habits such as painting trips to Italy, Mediterranean yacht trips and spa stays in India.

I don’t remember the exact words but there is an expression that preceded William and Kate along the lines of royals have a knack for working a few months a year and making it look like they are hard workers.

        @wolfie,
I think going to India will be fun and wonderful in many ways, but India is a world power and a royal visit there is important to “The Firm” and Britain in general.

Usually there are gifts from these kinds of visits like gifts for kids and gifts that are unique to the country being visited but I don’t think that visiting royals are lavished with jewels like in the good ol’ days. It still happens because Camilla has gotten some jewels but I think those came from Saudi Arabia and one or two other Middle Eastern countries.

      • Olenna says:

Regarding the EAAA, my favorite DM commenter (harriet from Toronto) says, “The only thing Bill Middleton regularly flies are kites, paper airplanes and remote control helicopters on the grounds of Anmer Hall until Carole calls him in for his cheese on toast and afternoon nap.” 🙂

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3327680/Kate-Wills-looking-forward-Christmas-family-four-Duchess-reveals-Princess-Charlotte-getting-used-noisy-big-brother-George.html#ixzz3s5CYy6NK

      • wolfie says:

Olenna – thanks for the link. I probably shouldn’t say a thing – but the duchess looks like she is either taking drugs, is a VERY happy mother, or just got laid.

      • Olenna says:

@wolfie, LOL! In another article, a commenter said something to the effect that Katie has only two expressions, manic and resting b*tch face. Personally, I’m going with the *got laid* scenario!

      • Cricket says:

Olenna: Harriet from Toronto is a treasure! The DM should hire her for her pithy, lol comments. I admit, I browse WK DM stories just for her input. It never disappoints, especially when she takes Stephen Kandy on (I think that’s his name.. aka Carole Midds).

      • Olenna says:

Cricket, I love Harriet’s responses to Stephen, too! He (or she) is such a nasty, mean-spirited little b*tch and it’s hilarious when Harriet serves him with a sugar-coated put-down.

    • AtlLady says:

I find it interesting that William and Catherine are cramming in so many appearances while Charles and Camilla are in Australia – far, far away. Being in the US, this just looks like more crap from Charles. I honestly think he is jealous of William and Catherine’s popularity, much the same way he was jealous of Diana. Since Charles’ office is the one that assigns royal events and appearances, maybe he intentionally keeps the Cambridge’s off the radar. In his mind, once Charles is King, everyone will be watching him and not paying attention to William and Catherine or their children. Yes, I do think Charles is that petty. Anne has a bigger pair than Charles.

It’s been said many times that W&K make their own work schedules. So they need to take accountability for their own decisions.

      • JulieM says:

anne_000: You can shout it from the rooftop seven ways from Sunday that Bill and Cathy make their own schedule, but some people simply do not want to believe it. There is always an external reason for the Cambridge duo not carrying their weight; Charles is a very popular one.

      • wolfie says:

If it were possible to say something very warm and cuddly to Prince Charles, it would be that *he doesn’t need to worry* about these two overshadowing him in any way, other than youth. Charles, although I didn’t previously like him because of Diana’s problems, has shown his true colors throughout the years, and they are bright.

      • Cricket says:

the only thing I agree with is that Anne definitely has bigger ones than Charles. I would never want to get on her bad side.

      • FLORC says:

        Atlady
Wk make their own schedules and are reportedly happy with it.
How do we know they are the ones in charge of their work with exceptions to national holidays? Well, Buckingham palace has gone on the record with proof to this. Kensington palace too. And wk themselves have released this info. No one outside of themselves and mandatory duties makes them do anything of service to others.
If you can’t believe what has been stated time after time with sourced info to prove it you do not want to see the truth IMO.

      • Tina says:

Can anyone post a link to a news article indicating that they set their own schedules? I’m trying to explain it (on a different board) and Google isn’t helping me.

      • notasugarhere says:

Various members of the BRF have stated it through the years. All you have to do is look at those silly days when two or more accidentally end up in the same town to see it. For confirmation, back to 2012. Richard Palmer’s twitter. Still love the dig at the end.

        Spring 2012

        Richard Palmer @RoyalReporter
@sofia09870 Kate’s office says she is dictating her own pace and is happy with it.

        Richard Palmer @RoyalReporter
@HMtheRedQueen She is dicatating the pace and her office says this how she wants to do it.

        Richard Palmer
        @HMtheRedQueen
One Sunday broadsheet claimed llast weekend there was concern Kate was doing too much. But there is no concern on that score.

      • Tina says:

        Thanks nota, that’s really helpful.

      • AtlLady says:

I stand corrected on William and Catherine making their own schedules. This sort of information is not given any press in the US. Don’t get me wrong either. I like Charles. He seems like a nice enough fellow but I still think he is a twit. The even numbered Windsor kids, Anne and Edward, turned out quite well, while the odd numbered ones, Charles and Andrew, seem to be odd in more ways than one.

  9. UESider says:

I think she looks great today. That coat is gorgeous and the color is beautiful!

  10. Anon says:

Did she color her hair recently? It looks like she literally dyed it last night or something, the color has a bit too much red in it and its just very fresh looking. No?

  11. PHD gossip says:

On the third photo – one can see the outline of the netting for her extensions. Look carefully.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Is that what that is? I thought it looked like a longer version of that infamous “scar”.

Aside from possible extensions, behold the containment of the hair! I like it.

    • Merritt says:

The scar is always in that exact same spot. She might wear extensions, but I don’t think that line is the extensions. I think it would be a little odd for them to always hit the same spot every single time.

    • Skye says:

Oh for petesake….it’s her scar. Everyone knows about that.

    • Scal says:

It’s the scar. Same spot over the ear as always.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Perhaps that scar is from a facelift / front lift. It seems to run from her ear up to her front head. I don’t believe it is from that alleged childhood injury. Why I think it is a facelift scar? Her puffy upper lids did leave short before the marriage and her cheek bones suddenly grew bigger and higher up…

      • Merritt says:

It is in the wrong place for a facelift scar.

      • wolfie says:

In my opinion, Kate’s face is falling. I am 60, and her face is worse than mine. Sunscreen ladies – always, then retin-A, exercise, and healthy food are working for me:

        http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3309621/The-doctor-says-look-young-60-won-t-need-facelift-just-lot-dedication.html

Perhaps the younger ladies reading this will take necessary precautions to enjoy their own good looks for decades. (Not to say that getting old isn’t strange – but after a bit of thought, when the time comes to accept the future, it is embraceable)

      • endodoc says:

wolfie – it’s not just the sun exposure, poor diet and extreme weight loss play a role too. you may be 60, but your bones are probably in better shape than kate’s too.

      • Ughhhhhh says:

Comments on the way she is aging are rude and sexist. There are plenty of negative things you can say about her and flattering things you can say about yourself without attacking her for something that every person goes through. Her wrinkles are her own business and it is not part of her royal duty to get a facelift or go back in time and wear more sunscreen. It’s body shaming which uses sexist standards to get women to feel like they don’t measure up and it is out of bounds.

      • wolfie says:

I’m sorry, Ughhhh – a poor comparison indeed.

      • Feeshalori says:

And, Wolfie, drinking plenty of water also helps for fresh hydrated skin.

And I do like the coat and the pulled-back hairstyle sans bangs. But a pea coat would have been great. And I can understand the jeggings since Kate went abseiling afterward, but normally don’t care for the look.

      • FLORC says:

Regarding aging. It’s only speculation and discussions in reason. Her touch ups and photo edits. It’s not so much her wrinkles, but how they vanish frame to frame. She has deep wrinkles, lower lid bags and double bags. She’s toxed and wears a lot of makeup. These are observations. Not intrusions into her business.
Or that’s how I approach it. Especially when her appearance appears to have drastically altered itself in the same day. My only major issue is who pays for it because you know she has no private money or income that hasn’t been filtered through tax.

      • vava says:

You really can’t depend on photos these days. If you happen to see the news posts early in the day, the photos tend to be real, not Photoshopped. Same with regard to the videos with all the filtering that can be applied. Kate and William are not aging well. And they are only in their early 30s! That’s what astounds me.

Ugggghh…. I think you are misinterpreting the situation. People are not being sexist when they bring up the aging thing. Kate and William BOTH are looking much older than their years. That is not sexist.

  12. Freebunny says:

    This coat is great.

    • Like the coat, the fit is great…even the strange boob dart doesn’t bother me all that much, but the color makes me need an antidepressant. Seriously, like there isn’t enough dark, murky gloom in the UK in the wintertime…..we need to wear it on our bodies now too?i this is a color I call wet bracken.

  13. Lora says:

For once, she looks really good!

  14. Shasta says:

    Nice coat!

  15. MinnFinn says:

With leggings and T-neck I prefer the silhouette of this coat over a pea coat. Betcha she doesn’t wear pea coats because she is a freeze baby. Many of us freeze babies (all of my female relatives and me anyway) require a wool coat to be at least knee length otherwise we freeze.

  16. Deedee says:

She gets points for having her hair back in a ponytail. The bar is set so low, it’s scraping the ground.

    • Olenna says:

ITA. Hair up or pulled back is always a good thing for Katie. I wish she’d trash those boots, though.

      • wolfie says:

She really needs to face the problem of her hair. I was embarrassed for her as she gave her last speech. It was bad enough that the world had been told that she was frightened – (so she couldn’t fake it) – and all that hair in her eyes could not disguise the fear we were told to recognize. (Vava?) counted scores of times during that speech that she had to toss her hair just to see…

Honestly, she was more likable when she was ordinary.

      • Cricket says:

I would take those boots over the wedges of doom any time, any day…

  17. Skye says:

I absolutely LOVE that coat. Must have!!!!

  18. Maum says:

Those boots are so sloaney c. early 90s…. She’s worn them before- I bet she had those at school.

    She looks really cold.

  19. anna2222222 says:

She looks great. Her husband’s camel toe is cramping her a style a little though, yes?

    • Citresse says:

LOL … don’t worry, the interesting contrast between the colourful flowers and the grey coat rescues the situation!
Kate looks great, but then she’s wearing her hair back, away from her face. I like the plum highlights in her hair. The coat is beautiful.

    • Jen says:

For a man, we’ve always called that a “moose knuckle”. Sorry for the visual 🙂

  20. kaiko says:

What’s it with all the boob darts in her coats?!! The fabric is too thick for them to ever look right. Fitted button up shirts, yes, sheath dresses, yes…An expensive coat should be cut/ lay a lot better against the chest area. This one is very piecey as well. Wondering if maybe she gets seconds from designers in bulk (hence the same design only in different colors and sheer overall volume of coats) and she just does damage control with an amateur cutsy tailor. I’m no fashion slouch (ignoring my paint spattered yoga pants presently) , heck my mom was a small scale clothing designer back in the day, and she would’ve had a field day with this ‘royal’ woman’s outerwear. Badly done, Emma….and for tlog, are those skinnies or tights? My crotch is hurting just looking at these two, and not in a good way.

    • jb says:

I really think she had a bob job of some sort and hence the coats not fitting quite right – that one looks oddly stretched in the boob area. Same as the gray dress the other day. It’s possible she’s still got her baby boobs but seems like that phase should be over….I think she had work done this summer when she utterly (as in no shopping photos) disappeared.

      • The Original Mia says:

I’m beginning to think the same. At first, I chalked it up to pregnancy boobs, but something seems artificial about them.

      • LAK says:

        she wears e-x-t-r-a padded bras.

don’t you guys remember how flat chested she was at the BOND premiere?

      • vava says:

LAK is right. Kate has small boobs, as we saw at the Bond premiere. She’s back to the padded bras whenever she can work them in. LOL. The bodice of the coat doesn’t fit properly AT ALL.

      • maeve says:

I’m with you LAK – she wears heavily padded bras and is quite flat without them.

      • The Original Mia says:

@LAK, that’s right. I forgot (purposely put it out of my mind) the Bond premiere look.

      • wolfie says:

I wondered about a boob job too. If it’s padded bra’s that she is wearing, they look real enough – not too over the top. Boobs shrink after nursing and many women feel they need “touch-ups”. Catherine was small to begin with, so she would need something, She wore that light blue number without a bra last week…

    • wolfie says:

One additional thing on the boob situation. She is too tiny to have such big ones. Boobs also shrink with dieting, duh.

      • candice says:

breastfeeding really does a number on them too! in her case, you can tell the size is not natural (and due to a heavily padded bra) due to the fact that the rest of her has shrunk but the bust – in certain clothes, not all – has grown and there is not the least bit of movement in the breasts when she moves.

      • vava says:

        @ Candice………..yes – I completely agree with you.

  21. AJ says:

I love this look on her.

  22. hazel says:

She wore jeans & a turtleneck, with hair in a pony tail, only because she went absailing later in the day.

  23. Claire says:

I like her outfit. Sue me.

  24. vava says:

I think when you see subsequent photos of her rappelling, you’ll understand why she is wearing her jeggings and her hair in a pony tail. (In some of those photos, she looks downright emaciated).

This coat – not a big fan. I don’t care for the way that collar looks buttoned up. Some of the darting looks awful, too. Whatever. There are some photos on the Daily Fail that are terribly unflattering for both Will and Kate and they look at least a decade older than they are. The dieting, sun exposure, genes, and Will’s hair loss have taken their toll. As much as I don’t care for them, and William is the one I dislike the most – something is amiss and it’s showing physically.

    • Jan says:

I like the coat and thank goodness her hair is under control but looking at the photos of her rappelling she looks really unhealthy. Her legs are so skinny and she’s so narrow throughout that she looks like a bobblehead and even anorexic. I guess life with William is not all sunshine and roses like she thought it would be. No wonder no one else was interested in marrying him – he’s a spoiled, boring man-child without ambition or work ethic who probably stamps his feet when he doesn’t get his way. I wonder if she has any regrets.

      • maeve says:

Why oh why oh why doesn’t William or anyone in the family address the “elephant in the room” – i.e. her emaciated conditon, weight obsession and the effect on her health. Didn’t they learn anything from Diana’s experience? Kate too was a vibrant, healthy girl and presently she’s a shadow of her former self. How is she expected to give 100% to her royal duties if she is not in top form?

      • vava says:

Remember too, that photos tend to add 10 pounds.

Kate has starved herself right back down to Honeymoon Weight.

      • Hana says:

I’m sure people with actual eatin disorders love hearing people like you use the term bobblehead. That’s so kind and classy of you…

      • wolfie says:

Hana, people with eating disorders can’t see themselves truly.

    • The Original Mia says:

Okay, now the jeggings make sense. I was wondering why she was opting for something so casual.

  25. Green Is Good says:

Kate looks SO much better with this hair style. Very flattering. Zero bangs trauma in the eyes. The whole look wins.

This hair should have been her speech look.

  26. Kate says:

I don’t like the look of pea coats on women and don’t own one, so I don’t think that would improve her look here (also, she would get vilified again for showing her thigh gap in skinny jeans if she wore a short coat or jacket), but to each his own. Anyway, they’re doing their duty and are on an official engagement, with no (known) Mustique vacation in sight, so I’ve got no complaints. Again, I don’t think KM is a fashion icon, regardless if the media, her fans or even KM herself want her to be, so I’m indifferent to what she wears. If she’s supporting her causes and helping people, great. It’s enough for me if she looks presentable and appropriate.

  27. hmmm says:

That is one ugly coat because the colour does not suit her; and it’s *another* new coat. It bunches in weird places too. And she’s not wearing pants, she’s wearing the old standbys- jeggings. Not much has changed, IMO.

  28. wolfie says:

Just for fun – here’s a link from the Huffington showing what scientists think George & Charlotte will look like growing up and as adults:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/11/12/prince-george-grown-up_n_8545032.html?utm_hp_ref=canada-parents

  29. Caroline says:

Tons of photos on the Daily Mail site of William and Kate abseiling in Wales. This was presumably the reason for the tight jeans earlier on. Must say she looks radiantly happy here.

    • vava says:

My husband was looking at some of the photos of her at that abseiling thing and he said she looked like a Wind Up Toy. LOLOL. I thought she looked rather manic. Couldn’t keep her mouth closed, making crazy faces.

    • Caroline says:

Yes, but Kate could hardly have worn this for abseiling.

If she wore anything like what Rania has on in this photo she would be called everything bad under the sun on this site. If she wore what Letizia is wearing she would be called too boring for words.

It seems that no matter what Kate does she cannot win. I don’t understand how people follow what she is doing if they detest her so much. People like the Karashidins (? sp) bore me rigid so I take absolutely no heed of what they do. I don’t know why they are in the press, what their names are and would not recognise any of them in the street – truth!

      • vava says:

Kate is funded by the public dole, and of course the wealth of the BRF. She is in line to be a queen consort someday and so that’s why she’s scrutinized.

      • wolfie says:

For me, Caroline, it’s about snobbery, and it is very interesting to note how the world reacts to the royal family and their PR. It’s not personal, but political.

      • notasugarhere says:

I personally think Letizia has great style, which is very budget constrained. If KM dressed like Letizia, she’d be showing up in appropriate, stylish, budget-friendly clothing. Nothing wrong with that.

      • FLORC says:

For what it’s worth a person can carry themselves in awful clothes like a figure of importance.
An aura in a sense. From simple observations of numerous royals it’s not the clothes of designers or prices, but what type of person wears them.
Rania, Mozah, Letizia, Maxima, etc… all have outfits that vary drastically in price, names, and styles. A common factor is is the women who wear the clothes. It’s in how they carry themselves. Kate carried herself in a way that seemed confident in the early dating or uni years. Then things changed. She appears to be dressing in a way that isn’t natural. It appears just false in a way. Not sure how to phrase it.

To sum.. The clothes shouldn’t matter. The substance should. Like Sofia’s awful shirt dress. I hated it for the cut and pattern, but she showed herself to be more than a clothes horse. And suddenlt th shirt dress wasn’t so bad.

  30. Tina says:

Does anyone else think there are a lot of new Kate supporters whose written English is not perfect? Jason, are you outsourcing positive commentary?

  31. FLORC says:

So, what I’m taking away from this is… What Kate wore… Not what impact they had for a cause, but rather what they received of good PR.
Her “pants” appear like those tight boots… Tailored pant suit is apparently asking for the moon and stars.

    • wolfie says:

Florc, your are such a good soul. So often your commentary inspires me. But the desire for tailored pants is still a dream of good taste.

      • FLORC says:

        Vava/Wolfie
What I love about pantsuits or tailored slacks is how they make legs and bottoms look better than ever. It’s more attractive and respetful to cover and not expose yourself, but have room to flaunt. tailored pants do this perfectly.
How she can only wear pants that she’s poured into or dresses without undergarments makes no sense.

        Wolfie
Love your comments too 😀 Even if we don’t always agree it’s from a good place.

      • wolfie says:

Florc, you have changed my mind about two things, Prince Charles, and who could be a *great and loving* mother! (my mind went into a total reverse with your comments – so there!)

      • FLORC says:

        Wolfie
Haha! Awww, thanks for the smile that gave me!

    • vava says:

Hi FLORC! Maybe some day we’ll see some gorgeous trousers on Kate! Don’t give up hope.

    • Nic919 says:

Has she ever worn trousers than aren’t those god awful jeggings? Most women in their 30s only wear those things for clubbing and not as actual pants for work related events.

If the excuse is because she went sailing later on that day, I seriously doubt there wouldn’t have been time for her to change in more athletic attire for that event. Besides jeggings aren’t exactly sporting wear. Her casual attire is either 80s nautical style or TOWIE.

She has access to a stylist so I just can’t understand the poor style.

      • FLORC says:

To my knowledge she has yet to wear pants she’s not poured into. Speaking to married life. Her style has evolved the longer she was with William to health and fit to think and tight.

      • vava says:

@ FLORC, think ‘shrink to fit”. That’s what Kate’s style has been since her engagement.

  32. Cricket says:

I think Kate looked great here! This is the best she has looked in years – the outfit was appropriate – with exception to big blue and those earrings for a repelling adventure. She even seemed genuinely happy.. I’m smelling a holiday very soon!

  33. Chrissy says:

These are some photoshopped pics! Early this morning, The Daily Mail had pics of her at the same event and she looked rough! Tired, really lined forehead, puffier eyes. She looks great here!

    • vava says:

This is very true. The unphotoshopped photos this morning were very rough. They have since been edited. The videos have also been filtered to try to make Kate look luminous. It just isn’t the case, unfortunately.

      • confused says:

Pardon my ignorance, but who is behind the photoshopping and what’s their motivation? I don’t get how the DM would publish one set and then edit and re-publish…

      • FLORC says:

The better someone looks the more favor they could win. As in poor Jason approving of the better narratives from improved appearance.
He could toss more treats/ stories their way.
It’s simple logic. Dishonest, but simple and extremely common.
Had a more realistic image been published it’s back to the portrait scandal. The image presented being accurate and the image previously seen being what is retouched. From many who have seen her in person and posted themselves she looks fine IMO, but nothing close to how the Photoshop changes her.

  34. Amy M. says:

She wore pants for a change because she went rappeling later in the day (she seemed to really enjoy it for what it’s worth). Not sure she would have worn them otherwise. Also in one picture on What kate Wore I thought I could see “the scar” on her scalp or whatever it is.

And her ponytail is not high, it’s her hair that is teased high which is kind of a weird look but it’s out of her face. Thank God for small favors haha.

  35. I always wonder why she keeps her coat on and buttoned to the neck when she’s indoors for these visits. Does anyone have a guess?

    • Liberty says:

If you want to look realllllly slim for the cameras, maybe you wear only a Spanx slip under the coat?

If you button all the way up, the coat acts as a sort of giant exterior body-cincher?

When the body isn’t getting the proper nutrients, it is prone to feeling chilled?

When one wears a dress made entirely of glued-together taxpayer money, one is only allowed to indulge the thrill by keeping the money dress entirely covered until one gets home?

  36. notasugarhere says:

What does having fun absailing have to do with working hard for improving children’s mental health? I’m putting this down as another of their fluff appearances (movie premieres, sailing, absailing).

    • wolfie says:

I wish that they would stop complaining about George – children know when they are considered a problem – noisy, etc. They should be saying things that will make him feel good about himself, especially as they are using children’s mental health as an issue to promote themselves.

  37. Artsygirl says:

On the 3rd photo, if look at it close up, does anyone know what that thin line around hair hairline is? It’s faintly showing and I though it was a scar at first but it goes up to around her hairline..strange.

    • FLORC says:

It’s the infamous scar that was only said to be from a serious childhood surgery.. Rather make a vague and loaded statement than have the public think her hair isn’t all rooted in her scalp. It was noted as a major fumble of quick reaction to a minor press inquiry. I appreaciate BP’s approach to the press more because of the KP mistakes.

  38. Minxx says:

I like the hair and the coat (though this is not the most flattering colour on her) but I hate the boots, very dated. Also, if you are a royal lady on an official outing, tight pants tucked into the boots are not elegant. She should try tailored, wide pants like CP Mary of Denmark or Queen Letizia of Spain. Far more elegant, grown up look. She seems to be stuck in her college years, IMO.
