Alex Pettyfer on Channing Tatum: ‘He was looking for an excuse to not like me’

alex2

I absolutely loved Magic Mike XXL. It was surprisingly fun and wonderfully sex-positive and woman-positive. It was a sweet relief after the original Magic Mike took itself too seriously and tried to be a “drama” about strippers. Another reason why I loved the sequel? Because there was no Alex Pettyfer. Pettyfer has a bad reputation around Hollywood for being a douchebag, a psycho, an unprofessional diva and a tantrum-prone “bad boy.” Like, I think the kid is physically attractive, but the personality is lacking, and has been lacking for as long as he’s had “buzz” (going on four years now). It was a poorly-kept secret that Pettyfer and Channing Tatum had some major boy-beefs with each other on and off the set of Magic Mike. And now Pettyfer is trying to set the record straight about the beef… by saying that yes, there was a beef and Channing bad-mouthed him because he was just so sensitive!

It’s no secret that Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer aren’t BFFs. In a new interview with Bret Easton Ellis, however, Pettyfer admits he’s partially to blame for their long-rumored feud.

“It’s true,” Pettyfer said when asked if the two Magic Mike costars butted heads on set of the 2012 flick. “Because Channing Tatum does not like me — and for many reasons [and] many being my own fault.”

“I was scared to speak,” he recalled during the podcast interview. “I actually did my work and I sat in the corner and listened to music because I had been told anything I did was wrong by my reps. I was very insecure as a human being. That also gave me a bad rep because everyone was like, ‘Alex doesn’t speak because he thinks he’s better than everyone else.’ That’s not true. I was just generally nervous and scared to be myself. I was in character.” (As previously reported by Us Weekly, sources told Us at the time that Tatum “thought Alex was a diva on set” and that he acted like a “jerk.”)

Things got worse between the two hunks when Pettyfer failed to pay rent to Tatum’s friend, whose place he was staying in at the time. According to Pettyfer, he “couldn’t breathe” in the apartment because he was allergic to what he believes was mold and dust. After moving out of the unit, Pettyfer said he “forgot” to pay rent due to his cousin’s death.

“All of a sudden,” Pettyfer claims, “I got a very negative email from Channing — rightfully so — saying, ‘Don’t f—k my friends. You owe money. Pay the f—king money. Don’t be a clown.’ And I really took that the wrong way, which I shouldn’t have, and emailed him back and said, ‘I’m in a real negative headspace and can you respect me for a moment and blah, blah, blah.’ And I got hounded through this time of grieving for money. By the end of it. I just said, ‘F—k them, what is money when life is so much more. I’m not paying.’ And I should have just paid. I think he was looking for an excuse to not like me.”

Things didn’t improve after that, either. During Magic Mike reshoots, Pettyfer claims that Tatum told everyone that he didn’t like him. “What Channing says goes,” he told Ellis. “He’s a movie star. I made the poor decisions….Channing was actually an incredible influence on me because after this whole situation happened — this was kind of the end of my immaturity and all my experiences put into one. It was an incredible experience making Magic Mike. I wouldn’t replace it for anything.”

[From Us Weekly]

Yeah, I don’t think Alex has changed that much. I don’t think there was an “end” to his poor decisions. The text of the interview reads like one big humblebrag and plea for sympathy. Like, Channing Tatum didn’t like me because I was too Method and took my job too seriously. Channing bad-mouthed me to other actors because I didn’t want to be buddy-buddy with him. Channing was looking for an excuse to not like me!!! Channing didn’t like me because I was too overwhelmed by grief to pay my bills! Whatever, dude. Trying to villainize Channing, a guy who is truly beloved and respected in Hollywood, won’t get you very far.

Good God, what a rain cloud. Pettyfer seems like he’d be a really unpleasant person to be around. All I see are excuses and self-pity, where as Charming Potato is a beautiful, positive little ray of sunshine. No wonder they didn’t get along.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Yeah, he seems like a sullen douche. There’s a reason Channing is beloved by lots of good directors and other people in the acting industry while Alex hasn’t been able to find prestige work for ages.

(I can’t believe he was my dream casting for Peeta in The Hunger Games once upon a time, yuck.)

    • Liv says:

Haha, what an idiot! How hard is it to be likable on set? Oh, but it’s totally the fault of his reps, because they mad him insecure. And he didn’t pay the rent! Can’t get over that. Team Channing!

  2. Loulou says:

Ugh. I didn’t know what to think of him and then I read his account of the rent story. Hate those kind of people. The apartment wasn’t even Tatum’s, it was his friend’s. So basically he decided to screw over someone innocent to punish Tatum. Sounds like a real killjoy.

    • Shaunna says:

Sounds like a cheap mooch who did not pay his rent!!

    • funcakes says:

Well he’s going to need that money he never paid for rent because it sounds as though he killed his own career. When will these people learn from the mistake of others. Hollywood can pull any douche off the streets to replace you.

  3. Jade says:

Wow that was exhausting to read. He looks like Ryan Phillipe.

    • Cupcake says:

No way! Alex is way hotter!! He just smoulders in pictures and in movies. He may be a douche but he’s got the “it” factor for sure.

      • Manjit says:

He’s got the tw-it factor for sure. He’s a spoilt little boy who needs to be sent to bed without any supper.

      • reed says:

Not nearly hot enough to excuse his BS

      • cr says:

But if he really had the ‘it’ factor for more audiences and movie studios he’d be getting more work, even if he’s a douche. But looking at his IMDB page he’s not getting a lot of work, and what he’s getting isn’t quality.

  4. grabbyhands says:

“He was looking for a reason not to like me”. Oh honey, it doesn’t seem like it would be hard at all.

  5. Esmom says:

Yeah, wow. He had me almost feeling sorry for him when he talked about staying quiet on the set but then immediately lost me with the unpaid rent tale. Typical “sorry not sorry,” playing the victim. What an utter douche.

    • Birdix says:

It was fine until he was called out for it, then reacted by getting mad, turning the blame away from himself, and digging his heels in. How do you look in the water, Narcy?

    • Naya says:

The entire podcast is filled with his victimhood. I presume that the Channing story is getting traction because it seems “recent”. But he talks about his other two big lead movies prior to Magic Mike and how he had beef on both sets ….but it wasnt really his fault.

On one set he admitted to having a screaming session because he discovered his co-star (Timothy Olyphant) was earning more – but it wasnt his fault because “everybody” had lied to him that he had the biggest check. He admitted to stalking his ex gf Dianne Agron into some hotel where he proceded to fight her date – but it wasnt his fault because he was young and he suspects that she had a bf overlap. The story about how he demanded a private plane to jet him around to promote a film was not his fault either, the poor baby just has a fear of flying you see. And all the trouble he had on some other set was because the real producers, Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, were never on set. Thats just a small sample btw.

If you can stomach Bret Easton Ellis for more than ten minutes, its worth playing to in the background as you do whatever. The victimhood is strong in this young man.

      • Mia4s says:

Does this guy have a manager or publicist? Or a parent? Can he really be so clueless? The full story about the paycheck was supposedly his big rebellion was to refuse to cash it……huh? Isn’t that a bit like your three year old holding their breath to try and punish you? Or refusing to eat?

He was a bit of a child actor (I guess) as his first credit looks to be from when he was about 15. The self-sabotage is reaching Lohan levels. He’s almost 26 now and I can name at least a dozen British actors age 25-33 who are good looking, can act, and are not blatant douches. Bye Alex.

      • lucy2 says:

Since you mentioned Olyphant, I’m going to drop this little Raylan Givens quote from Justified here, as it seems rather appropriate for Pettyfer:
“If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole.”

      • FLORC says:

        Lucy2
That quote sums it up. How does he not realize he’s the problem? Is the victim complex that deep?
I miss Justified. Such a good show!

        Naya
I could only handle so much of his reasoning. He couldn’t swallow his pride and actually admit anything was his fault. It was 1 big speech like “I’m sorry, but” and imo if “But” follows sorry it’s negates it entirely.

      • funcakes says:

Lucy, you made my day. I’m going to miss Raylan and his home spun wisdom.
He reminded me of my pop pop who always had his rifle nearby in case of trouble.(Never had to use it).

    • Turtle says:

THIS. I was riding with him for a second there and then he said he came up with another reason not to pay the rent????

It sounds like he couldn’t pay the rent and then made up a story to go with it.

      Sounds Bipolar to me.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, it started off okay enough…and then, yowza…he revealed too much of who he really is as a person.

  6. Kaye says:

I don’t think he had to look very far. I don’t even know him and *I* don’t like him.

Ever since I read that he had “you’re welcome” or some such phrase tattooed above his d*ck, I thought, okay, let’s give this one a pass. (And of course that may not even be true, but it stuck with me.)

  7. Mia4s says:

Ugh. When I go to pick up my car from the mechanic this afternoon and they give me the bill I guess I will let them know I won’t be paying because I’m in a “negative headspace”.

Grow up little boy. Seriously this is the most likeable you can be?!

  8. Littlebowbee says:

    Lookin rough!

  9. Miss M says:

    My douchemeter is working again!!!!
Well, not paying rent is/was wrong. But, at least, he is saying he was wrong. There are always 2 sides of the story and i dont buy that charming potato is a Saint and super nice.

  10. Talie says:

I listened to the interview and Bret basically just walks him right into hanging himself, which of course he does with bells on. The reason it sounds bad is because he is full of excuses, even when he talks about creating drama with I Am Four or whatever it was called. He actually admits to throwing a fit over his pay.

  11. mom2two says:

He’s a douche. Anything I have heard is that Tatum is a nice guy. Alex is not owning up to all his misdeeds. It was very telling, when even Tatum was trying to deny any beef with Alex, that Alex was barely part of MM promotion and Tatum, Matthew, Bomer and Joe M were cover boys for EW and Alex was nowhere to be found. Alex did a lot more than not pay rent to be virtually shut out of promotion for the first movie and not brought back for second one.

    • Grace says:

Exactly, if this part is what he would admit, which does not make him look good, I wonder what else he did to piss off Tatum.

  12. tracking says:

God, what a tool for not paying the rent. He seems, in a circular, inarticulate way, to be owning up to some of his mistakes though (eg saying in hindsight he should have paid and that his nasty e-mail to CT was a bad idea).

    • paranormalgirl says:

But if you read the subtext, he’s not REALLY owning up to anything. “Sure. I made mistakes, but it was Channing’s fault I made them.” “I should have paid the rent, but it was because Channing was hounding me for money I rightfully owed that I decided to not pay the rent.” None of the “mistakes” he made were his fault, according to his logic.

  13. Loo says:

I never liked Alex Pettyfer because he is a bad actor and has always came across as a douche. Furthermore, he isn’t that attractive to me, he looks like a run of the mill guy that you can see in any mall or college campus.

  14. Scal says:

Even now-he hasn’t paid that rent. He still owes that friend of tatum’s money. Screw my friends over and that’s reason enough for me not to like someone. Tatum is totally in the right here

    • Miss M says:

He does need to pay the Rent + a percentage for the delay like anyone would if we owe the landlord, etc.

  15. OhDear says:

My impression of Tatum is that he’s a pretty laid back but hard-working guy. Judging from the interview, Pettyfer sounds like a whiny douche (is he serious about the not-paying rent part?!).

(Also, Pettyfer’s attitude in this interview actually reminds me a lot of someone I dislike, lol)

  16. Kattttt says:

Slightly off topic but Magic Mike XXL was one of the worst films I’ve seen in ages, it just totally lacked any real story line and was unbelievably cringe inducing in places. I much preferred Magic Mike. And Alex, shhhh. No one feels sorry for you but you.

    • Kasia says:

+100000. It was so boring. Lacking any substance, any real emotions. And it wasn’t even funny or sexy. The stripper scenes were overly long and try-hard.

      • Kattttt says:

I honestly almost got up and walked out which I never do. The only tolerable part was the bit where Joe Manganiello danced to the Backstreet Boys…

      • FLORC says:

Glad i’m not the only 1. It was a terrible movie with good production value. It was bad. The dancing was about all I could handle.

    • jugil1 says:

Could not agree more! Magic Mike XXL was terrible. The “plot” was a joke. I praised the heavens when it was over for putting me out of my misery. The only way the movie could’ve been worse is if Alex Pettyfer were in it!

  17. Kasia says:

God, I hated Magic Mike XXL. It was boring, there was basically no plot whatsoever, the “celebration of women” was too obvious and clearly a marketing catch. And Amber Heard’s acting was awful, she had absolutely no chemistry with Channing. This movie seemed so fake to me. And I like Tatum and I liked the first installment.

  18. Nev says:

    I can’t deal.

  19. Armenthrowup says:

The douche is strong in this one – although I just can’t with Chanel Tattershobbits either 😛

  20. MrsBPitt says:

Alex, who???? Some advice….you don’t become a diva until you’ve earned it! This guy is a total turn off, and very average and unforgettable in the looks department! With his attitude, I see celebrity big brother in his future!!!!

  21. JenniferJustice says:

Doesn’t do any good to start by saying it was his own fault but in the next breath say Tatum was looking for an excuse not to like him. No dude, you were a douche by not paying rent. Don’t beleive you ever forgot and you still didn’t make good when you were harshly reminded, which nobody should have to tell you to pay your rent. Own it!

  22. Insomniac says:

Yeah, I bet Channing had to look *real hard* for reasons not to like this stand-up guy. Whatever. Team Charming Potato.

  23. CornyBlue says:

I have updated all my statuses from facebbok to Whatsapp with ‘F—k them, what is money when life is so much more. I’m not paying’. What a beautufil thought specially for someone who gets wads of cash for getting up in the morning and looking pretty in front of a camera. Also this dude had very serious rumours about him assaulting Dianna Agron and the like. i cannot believe he was supposed to be “the Young British Actor” . What a bag of steaming dicks .

  24. Steph O says:

CALL THE WHAAAAAAAMBULANCE! This f***ing guy. What a douche.

  25. AlmondJoy says:

Wow. What a peach. I’m sure Channing isn’t the only person that doesn’t like him. Seems like Alex was basically being his real self in that awful movie Beastly.

  26. kri says:

Very passive aggressive, with lots of special pleading sauce thrown in. Seriously, I am nnoyed and I just read his word babbles. Cannot imagine what its like to work with him.

  27. Lbliss says:

Right. Let me try that excuse on my landlord now. Let’s see how that goes. I’m sick with allergies, and it’s from the mold and dust from your apartment so I moved out. But don’t bother me about such things as rent – Im in a bad headspace right now. Wow what an entitled whiny tool.

  28. I Choose Me says:

I used to defend him when he first hit the scene but there are enough stories out about him now that certify his douchitude. Can’t stand people who won’t own their shit and are constantly making excuses. I now dislike him so much that I can no longer see the hot.

Oh and Timothy Olyphant has been in the business for decades and deserves every penny he earns. PETTYfer needs to have a seat.

  29. FLORC says:

But he’s such a terrible person. He’s almost in the golden ratio for his face, but his features are not of greek relation in blood or in relatable appearance for what we see and associate.

Unless you mean that greek gods were said to be attractive and you also find him attractive. Then disregard 😀

  30. Reece says:

In other words, Channing Tatertot merely “joined the club” a little later than some of us.

  31. Holmes says:

Too bad he has the personality of a wet fart. What a knob.

  32. Josefina says:

Ugh. I hate bringing this up but if Alex were an Alexandra, her career would’ve been over before it even started. He’s a wooden actor, his films all flop, and he’s a pain to work with. Why does he still have a career? Nobody wants to work with him and nobody wants to watch his work.

  33. sauvage says:

Yeah, yeah, Channing Tatum was just threatened by your beauty and success. *yawn*

    STFU, Petty.

  34. funcakes says:

    Bitch better have my money!
Y’all should know me well enough
    Bitch better have my money!
Please don’t call me on my bluff
Pay me what you owe me
    Bitch, give me your money
Who y’all think y’all frontin’ on?

  35. Slushie says:

I think he sounds genuinely sorry. His career’s not really happening so he’s coming out with it. He looks 40 but is still pretty immature.

    • FLORC says:

If his moments of sorry weren’t directly followed with passing blame or justifications to excuse his errors i’d agree. Too bad he kept talking.

  36. BobaFelt says:

But this douche-bro makes it so easy to hate him

  37. Debutante says:

How does this guy even have a career?? He sucked so bad in Magic Mike he almost ruined the movie.
I remember watching it thinking, why is this guy in this movie ?? He’s a terrible actor with not one iota of charisma or screen presence.
He’s as dull as a butter knife. And not good looking either. IMO
