Ruby Rose and ex-fiancee Phoebe Dahl exhibit grace during breakup

Orange is the New Black actor Ruby Rose and fiancée fashion designer Phoebe Dahl have called off their engagement after almost 2 years. They released a statement telling fans about their breakup and wishing each other well.

Yesterday, Phoebe sent the following tweet:

Ruby immediately responded:

Hmmm. It’s hard to be snarky when everyone is being so pleasant. If these two are going to insist on being completely rational during their breakup, I am taking my toys and going home. Seriously, even their friends are being gracious about it.

In retrospect, you can see a few bumps in their road to the alter: Phoebe broke up with her girlfriend the day she met (and because of her feelings for) Ruby. The former couple had a whirlwind romance getting engaged after only three months and before they had even said “I love you.” Phoebe spoke to a few outlets about her excitement for the wedding and the challenges of planning it. Ruby wanted a small, low-key wedding and Phoebe, citing a large family, wanted a more lavish affair. Ruby, who identifies as gender neutral, discussed their eagerness to start a family. Following this, Ruby got the role of Stella on OITNB and with the success of the character, became far busier than anticipated, forcing the wedding to be postponed until 2106.  And now they have “parted ways.”

This is sad, they sounded very happy while together. Ruby ran into some Twitter hate with a tweet after the Paris bombings but they both seem generally well-liked and, so far, are handing this with dignity. Just to let you know, Phoebe, who is the granddaughter of Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal, created Faircloth & Supply that donates a school uniform to a girl in Nepal for every item sold. She also co-founded Scallywags with Ruby, with a portion of those sales going to non-profit animal rescue.

Maybe teh world’s collective crush on Ruby made her want to be single for a while? It’s happend to a lot of other stars in relationships when hitting it big in Hollywood.

I don’t know these people, but when did gushy Twitter messages once kept private become the norm? I must be old. I can’t help thinking everything on Twitter is meant for public viewing, in which case private feelings are then for others, not just the recipient. And that makes me question motives.

      • Aren says:

You’re not old. Twitter is a tool for narcissists to get attention, and actors are mostly always desperate for attention/validation.

Also Phaebe Dahl released a statement about her personal life/relationship status from her company’s account.
She could use her personal account (if she has) for this!
Kinda unprofessional if you ask me.

  2. fiona says:

Yeah, I could see this coming miles away. Ruby is arrogant and probably wants to social climb/ make the most of her new higher profile fame. She strikes me as the type.

    • SydneySnider says:

I used to like a Ruby a lot. When she was still here in Australia, her profile was quite low-key, even though she was well-known. I believe lots of people had a soft spot for her, given her mental health struggles. I don’t know…maybe it’s just me, but it feels like the new-found (and wider) fame has really gone to her head. I always thought she was more discerning and had more substance than to hang about with certain celebs she’s been keeping company with of late. Bieber, for example. Mmmmm….maybe she’s just playing the showbiz game, but I’ve gone right off her. It’s nice to hear all parties are dealing with the breakup with civility, respect and decorum.

I LOVED this couple!!! 🙁 :'( I’m so so sad that they dint make it 🙁

    • bellenola says:

Me tooooooo! They were my favorite celeb couple. Sads.

PS: Phoebe, go back to the dark hair. It suits you so much better.

  4. MonicaQ says:

Apparently they’re a DJ too now? I looked at my Miami Life in Color flyer and Ruby Rose listed as an act. /sigh.

    • Lucrezia says:

Uh, she’s been in the music biz about as long as she’s been an actress. Actually, here in Oz, she was mostly famous as a VJ on Aussie MTV. (DJ is a pretty natural extension of VJ.) She’d had a few tiny acting roles, but nothing anyone saw. So it was more the other way around: “she’s an actress now?!?”

  5. aligoat says:

I believe this is Ruby’s third or fourth broken engagement.

  6. Greenieweenie says:

I suspect Phoebe had her eyebrows tatted on but oh dear. Color.

  7. Patricia says:

I found Ruby unbearable on OITNB. I hope she isn’t anything like that arrogant, childish smacked ass in real life. But I’ve looked at her IG and she seems like she’s totally drinking her own koolaid. Not a fan.

But still it’s always nice to see people displaying civility in a breakup, maybe she’s not so bad.

    • Rhiley says:

Exactly on all the points you have made. I didn’t enjoy this past season of OITNB really at all, but her character in particular was most annoying, and I couldn’t help but imagine this is probably how RR is in real life. She has a Justin Bieber quality that gives me the skeeves.

    • platypus says:

I thought she was a terrible cast. Compared to the other women on the show, she has zero on screen charisma beyond being pretty (IMO). It’s not like all of the other characters are meant to be likeable in the traditional sense either, but they have that “something” that still makes them ejoyable to watch.

      • Fanny says:

+1 on “Stella” being the low point of last season. Subsequently I can’t stand Ruby Rose, not because she may or may not be like her character, I just think her acting was terrible. And I’m not a fan of her social-climbing hipster DJ persona.

      • Seapharris7 says:

RR was terrible… from the flat acting, forced character nobody really ever like, and the entire season was disjointed.

  8. Rainbow says:

Isn’t Ruby a serial engager? I think this is the 4th broken engagement for her and she’s only 29 yearls old. She’s pretty and seems cool, but i can’t take serously someone who wants to marry every person she is in a relationship with, after a couple of months. She’s always engaged.
I think she’s in love with the idea of love and gets bored after the honeymoon phase.

    • hogtowngooner says:

Agreed. I knew a girl like that once. Every new guy is “the one” until the inevitable breakup.

  9. UmamiMommy says:

Don’t know much about the private lives of either of them, but I actually found Ruby quite charismatic on OITNB. She stood out to me as having star quality even before I knew she was being fussed about. It’s also great to see everyone being so gracious and civil about a breakup. And I love Phoebe’s dress in that first pic. That’s all I’ve got.

  10. Blackwood says:

I really don’t get this massive crush on this girl. When I look at her, the only thing I see is her chin, even if her boobs are out. She seems fairy generic, style-wise, and not too bright. And if I remember correctly, she outed a previous gf who was in the closet and made some comment about allegedly sleeping with Demi Lovato. If it was a guy, we’d say he’s tacky for bragging about the women he slept with, but somehow it’s okay if it’s a woman doing it?

  11. Miss M says:

    They were a pretty couple.

  12. amilu says:

I’ve never seen OItNB, so I have no opinion of Ruby Rose. But Phoebe is quite the chameleon. She looks especially pretty with the red hair and more natural looking brows.
