Trace Cyrus posts photos of his torso, he’s almost entirely covered in tattoos

Trace Cyrus, 26, is a musician, like other members of his family although sometimes that word needs to be in quotation marks depending on whom we’re referring to. He has a lot of tattoos, obviously, with ink across the whole side of his face, along his entire neck and even on his hands, and that’s caused issues for him. Earlier this year, his little sister, Noah, posted a story about how Trace was denied entry into a restaurant in Kentucky because of all his tattoos. Then, this summer, his band canceled a scheduled gig in Toronto, Canada, with Trace claiming that it was too much stress for him to cross the border since he’s always detained. (Because of his tattoos.)

Now it appears that Trace has gotten even more ink. He posted photos of his full torso and the side of his face, along with announcements about his band, Metro Station’s, gigs. He’s pretty media savvy and he surely knew the press would pick these up.

I have a couple of small tattoos but they’re not really my thing anymore. This isn’t my taste but to each their own is how I feel about it. It’s his body, and as Kaiser pointed out to me it looks like he had good work done at least. It’s very rare for someone to have that many tattoos on their hands, neck and face especially, that’s about all I’ll say about it.

Like his younger sister, Miley, Trace is an animal lover. He Instagrams a lot of pics and videos of his sweet dogs. He’s also still with his longterm girlfriend, Brenda Song. They’ve had an on-off relationship since around 2011 but they’re together now and he gushes about her.

Here’s Trace before he got the majority of his tattoos:

God, the stench of douche is over-powering.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

Body tattoos are fine, but neck, and especially face tattos I just don’t like. To each their own, I guess.
Personally, I don’t think I’ll ever get a tattoo. I would probably not like it after a couple ofr months. I’m flaky like that.

For someone who looks like that, you’d expect the music of his band to be a bit “harder”.

  3. Size Does Matter says:

Seriously questioning my click choices right now.

  4. Bettyrose says:

I love tattoos, but I always question what they’ll look like in 30-40 plus years. Questioning that hard here.

    • Chaucer says:

I have a ton of tattoos. I make it a priority to get good work done, but if for some reason I end up regretting my ink or it ages badly, I figure in the next ten to fifteen years or so, removal will be cheap, easy, and very effective. How my work will look when i’m 50 or 60 doesn’t even cross my mind. I don’t place my personal value on my tattoos, and hope that by then others will value my life for what i’ve done, not the ink I have. Plus, the really terrible work you see done on folks, especially older folks, is due to the type of ink they used. Ink quality is so much better and doesn’t bleed now.

      • Birdix says:

have the colors improved too? In the past everything looked black or blue to me, now I can see more red and green. And how much would all those tattoos cost?

    • Zip says:

Old peoples skin does not look that good anymore anyway, no matter if they have tattoos or not.

    • funcakes says:

John Cougar Melloncamp said with age the tattoos sag along with the skin.

    • Tiny Martian says:

I always think about this when I see young women with belly tatts. Because if they ever decide to have kids? Those suckers are going to stretch and deflate with each pregnancy, they’ll just never look the same again.

    • Ange says:

There are plenty of pics of old people and their tattoos out there if you look. Generally they look pretty badass!

    • Bettyrose says:

To clarify, I specifically meant the neck/face tats. Tat covered bodies are practically mainstream at this point

    • Lauraq says:

When I got my first tattoo at 16 (that I still adore at 28, though it needs recolored), a lady in her 60s approached me and asked me my age and what I was getting done. When I told her I was 16 and getting a snake tattoo, she clapped her hands, and pulled down her shirt to show me a rose tattoo on her breast. “My first tattoo, which I got around your age,” she then chuckled, leaned closer, and said, “The stem has gotten a bit longer with the years, though.” Loved her, she got another tattoo on her back that day.

  5. Dani says:

Is that a tattoo of Billy Ray on his hand????

I actually really like tattoos on guys, even a lot of tattoos but this is overkill/screaming for attention.

*Didn’t Brenda claim she was pregnant and has a miscarriage when he broke up with her or am I mixing up stories?

    • MonicaQ says:

Nah, that was correct, I remember it being a big thing on Livejournal.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

I remember that, too. And then it all just disappeared as it nothing ever happened. I thought I made that story up, in my head. Glad you brought up. Thanks for confirming my sanity.
Trace looks good. If I could get all those tattoos, I would. Girls just don’t carry a body full of tattoos the same way a guy does.
The one in the middle of his chest reminds me of Rihannas tattoo.
The white dog is so cute n fluffy. It looks like a Teddy bear.

      • Shambles says:

I thought I had imagined that too, Wentworth Miller. It crossed my mind once and I thought I was going crazy. Hm.

    • Dani says:

Oh good! I thought I was going crazy for a second haha that all just went away too quickly.

    • Sochan says:

IIRC Song’s mother actually came out and said “my daughter was never pregnant”. The whole thing was really weird.

    • Wellsie says:

If it is a tat of his dad on his hand, I guess he uses the other one for um, self-loving. Lol.

    • Rosalee says:

No..it’s Geronimo, who happens to look nothing like Billy Ray.

  6. Neelyo says:

When I clicked on this thread my first thought was of Rob Kardashian.

  7. Lydia says:

This is a sensitive subject for me. I am very very heavily tattooed but with long sleeves and jeans on nobody can tell.
People have sat and told me how trashy they think tattoos and the people who get them are. So, I’m nice and approachable with long sleeves but the second I bare some flesh I am trashy? Or hard or an inmate or what ever.
I think he looks fine. If he wants to be super heavily tattooed and make bad music more power to him. He doesn’t have to have some hardcore band just because he likes to decorate his body.

    • Bridget says:

If it helps, I don’t think he’s trashy because he has a bunch of tattoos. I think he’s trashy because he’s Trace Cyrus.

      • Blackcat says:

My thoughts exactly. He grosses me out tatooedless or tatoofull.
This whole family needs to take up residence in a water plant.

      • funcakes says:

Ditto. The whole clan just gives off goofy vibes.
I think tattoos are bad ass if you’re serious about them.

    • claire says:

Some people are weird about tattoos. I hope you can not let it get to you.
As far as his, I’m not a fan of the whole body tattooing at all (I like sleeves tho), but I think his looks good. I mean, it looks artistic. It looks like there’s a cohesive style that’s running through it. I think that looks cool. Sometimes whole body tattooing looks weird to me, I guess, because it just looks like a b/w and color mishmash of a thousand styles and something about it I’ll admit just looks wonky and I probably have a lot of biases built up from media representation. I like this guy’s though, despite the fact that I think as a person he’s a bit much.

      • Jag says:

Agreed, with the exception of the letters on his fingers. I really don’t like that at all.

Lydia, those people are obviously close-minded. How can they like you when you’re covered and not like you if you have your tattoos showing? That’s ridiculous of them!

    • Jay says:

I can’t stand people who are so judgey about tattoos. If you don’t like how they look, that’s your right, but whether someone has tattoos or not says NOTHING about his/her character.

If I were you I would roll up my sleeves as they were talking that nonsense and stare at them dead in the eyes.

    • Naya says:

I’m sorry for the negativity you experience over your tats. But even saying that makes me a bit of hypocrit because the honest truth is that when I meet a heavily tatted guy like this, I’m instantly scanning for gang, prison or racist affiliation tatoos. Had I not known that this is the pampered child of the guy who sang achy breaky heart, I would be googling for which unsavoury grouping tatoos crucifixes on their face – I believe the tear face-tatoos indicate number of prison stints or number of people killed depending on the gang. I cant justify it but this is why my mind automatically goes.

    • paranormalgirl says:

Yeah, I’ve got a bunch of tattoos too. Feel free to judge this successful psychiatrist mother of 2, wife of 1. My tattoos do not devaluate my medical license no matter how much the judgy mcjudgersons want them to.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

Lydia, I swear u must be so sexxy!I I loooooove tattoos. I don’t understand where the stigma of people with tattoos being dirty or whatever else kind of crappy stereotypes are out there, came from.

  8. teatimeiscoming says:

If you have such anxiety over traveling with the amount of tattoos you had previously, why would you get more? I don’t get it.
I like tattoos; I have a few myself. But if I was a touring musician, and I had anxiety about border patrol, and getting into places I had to go in order to perform, I probably wouldn’t voluntarily get more of the thing that contributed to my anxiety.

    • Tiny Martian says:

I can’t help but think that this is one of those “rich person’s problems”. That much quality ink is very expensive! Some people have things so easy they just need to create problems for themselves, I guess? Fine if he likes his ink, but crying about being detained at another country’s border when you’ve gone out of your way to make yourself look like a gangster is just silly.

      • Lady D says:

Knew a guy with very long, unkempt hair. He let the mess fly while he sat around bitching that nobody would hire him because of his hair. He was more than happy to spend his days on welfare complaining he was discriminated against. This went on for years.

    • JenniferJustice says:

Because he likes drama more than he dislikes anxiety.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

People are instantly judged by their appearance, and naturally his looks would cause him to be detained. My son who is for the most part, an innocent, is judged continually because of his waist length dreads. It makes me mad, because I know my son has good character, but I understand why people rush to judgement based on his looks. Of course judgement based on skin color has happened since the beginning of time. I think we are further along in the process of not rushing to judgement based on how someone looks than ever before, but we also have a really, really long way to go to get past that. However, having said all this, my immediate reaction to seeing someone with his amount of tattoos in a public place would be fear of him-like I want to avoid him, because he may be a dangerous person. I guess this exposes my prejudices. Crazy I can see both sides but can’t seem to help my initial reaction to his looks.

      • CrazyMary says:

Zwella, you sound like an awesome mom, and I agree that, in a perfect world, we wouldn’t judge anyone on appearances. But being that we aren’t there yet, I do think most people would benefit themselves if they avoided elective features that would limit their potential. I ranted a bit about it below, but after reading your response, my heart has softened. Can you help me understand how your son’s dreads are so important to him that he is willing to miss opportunities to protect them? I can see the importance of doing that in non-elective situations, like skin color, cultural heritage, religious values and gender … but I guess I feel like your son should find a different hairstyle he likes so as not to suffer unnecessarily. Is it possible that those who gravitate toward elective features (tats, hairstyles, clothes, plastic surgery, etc.) that aren’t accepted widely are also a bit “lost” in general? Because I can’t imagine losing my freedom to travel or the ability to land a great job over something optional.

      • Kiyoshigirl says:

I know a lot of people with full sleeves who cover them for work, fine dining, court, etc., and they do so because they expect they’ll be judged for their motivation to do so. Those same people know when to say “enough”. I don’t worry heavily tattooed people (I’m talking full chests, arms, hands, etc) are dangerous creatures, but I am quick to assume they have an addiction. I’ve had multiple people tell me they crave their tattoo endorphin highs. It happens.

  9. Bridget says:

What’s interesting to me is that he’s intentionally covered his entire torso and arms. It looks like he choose a couple of big pieces and had entire sleeves put on (as opposed to a collection of images). To each their own, but it feels like he’s taking a short cut to show how hard core he is.

    • Bridget says:

Also, is it just me or does this seem odd? He’s intentionally covering every inch of skin in a way that makes me think he’s hiding himself.

      • littlestar says:

That is a really insightful comment, Bridget. I think you are on to something there.

When I looked at the pictures and saw that he was so heavily tattooed and only 26, it made me think maybe he has an addiction to it as well? Maybe he enjoys the pain? I wonder if the rest of his body (legs, feet) are also covered? And if so, how will he feel when he’s literally run out of space on his body for anymore tattoos?

      • platypus says:

littlestar, I’d say that’s definitely a possibility. People react differently to being tattooed, mine wasn’t painful in the slightest, only very euphoric. I wished I’d gone for something huge and intricate that would have taken longer, and wanted to go back the next day for another one! Of course I didn’t, but it’s not hard to see how people with more spontaneous and addictive personalities end up like this.

  10. leigh says:

It’s his body he can do what he wants with. I like tattoos personally, so I have no problem with them. Face tattoos though, are not my jam. He must get harassed by cops A LOT.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

There is a girl that comes in where I work with a huge face tattoo. She has talked to me numerous times about how no one will hire her because of her face tattoo. I feel sorry for her. She seems like an intelligent, nice girl, but she is rejected continually because of it.

      • Delta Juliet says:

Unless someone forced her to get that face tattoo I wouldn’t feel too badly. Most professional places are not going to hire someone with a tat on their face and it’s not like that’s some huge secret.

      • Jag says:

Why doesn’t she use tattoo covering makeup? Men can use it as well, so if Trace really wanted to get through customs easily, he could cover the tattoos and have less of a problem – unless he has to be uncovered for his passport.

I have an internet friend who got a swastika while in prison and he was recently fired from his job due to it. My question to him was why he got it in the first place – “sometimes you have to do things to survive in prison that you don’t want to do” – and then I asked why he didn’t use makeup to cover it. He didn’t realize that he could have. (He is an addict and doesn’t go to court like he’s supposed to, so he ended up in prison for a while. I’m hoping he turns himself around because jail and prison aren’t deterrents for him.)

  11. Sayrah says:

Not my thing, but seriously not as shocking as what his sister was “wearing” on another site yesterday. It looked like a concert and I don’t know how she wasn’t arrested for indecency.

  12. sills says:

Aaaawwww at those pups! I love a man who loves his dogs.

RE: his tats, I’m sympathetic to the fact that he wants to stand out from the crowd with his body art. But for good or for ill, a lot of people still associate face tattoos with gang membership. That may be why he’s getting stopped at border? If you do extreme body modification, you’ve got to be mature enough to realize that it can elicit some negative reactions–but always remember that it was your choice. Lots of people get stopped at the border for looking a certain way but through no choice of their own.

    • Sam says:

Some tattoos are used as identifiers among gang members. Law enforcement agencies do maintain databases of images that have been linked to gangs and criminals, and sometimes innocent images do get co-opted by them. It is totally possible that Trace has some images that are in the databases and he is being detained for further investigation on that basis. It sucks, but I also understand that police need to do their jobs and try to prevent criminals from moving between countries. It’s part of the world we live in.

      • Mayamae says:

I read that the Aryan Brotherhood likes to use green shamrocks. That irritates me. If you’re going to be a professional hate-monger have the bal*s to wear your symbols instead of hiding behind innocuous ones.

  13. kri says:

Something nice…the dogs look happy and healthy. Something not so nice-wtf did the Cyrus “parents” do to these kids?!

  14. Sarah B says:

Dude, those are some seriously cute dogs.

  15. Sam says:

I just look at it and think about how much it must have HURT to get some of those very sensitive areas done.

Torsos are one thing, since you can always cover them up. I do tend to judge facial tattoos on people other than artists themselves, since those are inherently going to limit your life options. But let’s face it, he’s a Cyrus and he knows the money will probably always exist, so it’s not like he’s concerned about his life options.

  16. Evyn says:

I was kinda grossed out, until I read the posts about the dogs. Too cute!!!

    • Elle says:

I agree that the love of dogs is cute. And I dunno..The Cyrus family has never bothered me too much. Admittedly, I often cringe at the things Miley chooses to do, however I don’t feel dislike for her or her fam. It seems to me like their attention seeking attitudes are perhaps a result of eccentricity, mixed w naivety and identity issue rather than utter narcissism. And exhibitionisim is clearly a part of that for Miley. I just hope she doesn’t end up having substance abuse issues to temper her extreme behaviours.

  17. Matcha Green says:

Does he know that he has a labia tattoo behind his right ear? Those puppies are just asking to be cuddled, way too cute. Also too cute, grown men who openly profess love of puppies.

  18. CK says:

Oddly, I’m not put of by the body tattoos. It’s the facial tattoos that get me. I’d seriously break down crying if my future daughter/son comes home with a face covered in tattoos. That being said, I find his antics more bearable that his sisters so yay for him.

    • saltandpepper says:

Agree with you, CK. I love tattoos, but I think it’s sad that he’s had his face tattooed. The Cyrus kids, and I’m not saying they’re bad people, are seriously messed up. I don’t care how much money they have, I feel sorry for them. They’re both acting out to attract attention, but acting out in the worst ways. They’re carrying some heavy baggage for some or other reason.

  19. Bobo says:

Did he get a nose job? His face isn’t so…horse-like.

  20. Shaunna says:

I am so glad I am done raising teenagers!

  21. yep says:

Idk..tattoos on a man are sexy. As long as its not done with a sewing needle, thread, india ink, and a modified cassette tape player.
On women too, Ive seen some absolutely works of art.
I have them..but my personal tastes stop at no tats on my boobies( that butterfly might turn into an unicorn at 89) my neck, face, and forearms. There are ladies who can rock them in those places. I cant.

  22. Dre dog says:

    Looks like rodney radke

  23. Lostara says:

Hm. I check the social media of make-up artist Jeffree Star, who is also covered in tattoos, almost on a daily basis. That man never mentions being denied access to any places, harassment at borders or airports etc. pp. So I guess those problems of Mr. Cyrus ARE directly linked to his behaviour. *shrugs*

    • platypus says:

IDK about being denied access, but it’s pretty easy to feel personally harassed at airports and border controls, at least. It might not be a tattoo issue, I look absolutely normal compared to him, but for whatever reason, I hardly ever get through customs without inspection if there’s a control… And customs officers tend to be very rude and threatening no matter how nicely you behave, so I wouldn’t assume it has anything to do with his behaviour in the way you’re implying either (though you might be right, I know nothing about the guy – just sayin’).

  24. iheartgossip says:

One Question: What in all whats? happened to the Cyrus children while growing up? Something is either mentally wrong, or they were horribly abused. It’s really sad and I just can’t snark. *face / neck tats: NO!*

    • CrazyMary says:

Seriously, I used to think Billy Ray was a decent dad, but now I’m questioning what went on behind closed doors.

  25. CrazyMary says:

Ugh, it’s been a rough day at our house, so I have no patience with this whole story. First, excessive tattooing like this is an addiction at best and body dsymorphia at worst. Second, elective procedures like this are not tops on my sympathy list. So many people are judged for appearances they have no control over. Tattoos are a choice, and anyone getting them knows that excessive tattoos are not widely accepted as professional or mature. In fact, excessive tattoos are usually associated with gangs/crime and or drug cultures. The people I personally know with more than a few discrete tattoos are generally people struggling with something, including the ability to grow up and be a responsible adult. I know, I know, I’m so judgey, but I have a funny feeling that Trace is pretty judgmental about boring blokes who wear suits and, you know, work for their money. If he was trying to stick it to the man, he should have spent all the money he blew on body art trying to make a difference.

  26. Yepisaidit says:

I’m kinda shocked that I like his tattoos and his dogs are cute.

  27. platypus says:

Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t mind his look. Even the face/neck/scalp tattoos – whatever is going on in those areas in the older photo is much more off-putting…

  28. wonderwoman21 says:

I can’t roll my eyes back far enough to express my exasperation that they claim to be Cherokee (a southern tribe) just like every other white celebrity and used the image of a Plains native to represent being “southern made” supposedly Cherokee descendants *insert eye roll*. They’re not descendants of the Cherokee, they’re descendants of the people who kicked the Cherokee off their ancestral lands so they could take it β˜•πŸΈ

  29. Cameron says:

    Dear Billy Ray and Trish,
You didn’t give your kids issues at all. And before the hate starts its not about his tattoos it just the hot mess their kids come across as in the media. Me me me me I
wonder if their parents had raised them out of Hollywood if their daughter would be licking and humping everything on stage and your son wouldn’t feel driven to cover every inch of his skin possible. I have no problem with heavy tats but I’m a mental health provider for young adults and that just screams at me
