Julianne Hough covers Cosmo: ‘I want to be respected as a singer & an actress’

JH1

I was never really a fan of Julianne Hough when it felt like everyone was trying to make her into a thing several years back. She left Dancing with the Stars and tried to become a movie star and professional pop star (I guess?). It did not stick. And so she spent a few years being more low-key and rejiggering her career strategy. She kept her head down. She got a cute haircut. She got engaged to a hottie. And soon she’ll be promoting her role in Dirty Grandpa, plus she’s going to be playing Sandy in Fox’s Grease: Live event on January 31. So… that’s why she’s on the cover of Cosmopolitan’s February issue. For those projects. And it feels like she’s creeping back to that place where she’s trying to be a major celebrity/name again. Some highlights from Cosmo:

On not wanting to be known for the very thing that propelled her to superstardom: “If someone told me they hadn’t seen Dancing With the Stars, I would say, ‘Oh, good!’ Everything I was getting was amazing, but I felt like, I’m so much more than this. I want to be respected as a singer and an actress.”

On how she met fiancé Brooks Laich through her friend Teddy Sears: “I did a horror movie that never got released. I’m convinced the only reason I was meant to do that movie was to meet my fiancé. Six years prior, Teddy Sears, my costar, tried to invite Brooks—who was a good friend of his—to visit him in L.A. Brooks, who knows nothing about pop culture, joked, ‘What are you going to do—hook me up with that Juicy Fruit starlet?’ He’d seen the commercial and was like, ‘Where do I meet a girl like that?’ I was the girl in the commercial! Teddy remembered that comment and texted Brooks, ‘You’re never going to guess who I’m doing a movie with.’”

On her long distance relationship and whether she and her fiancé have phone sex: “Oh, for sure. But I’m really bad at it…I’ll get halfway through and start laughing. It’s an art. I applaud people who are good at it. They need to come and help me keep a straight face!”

On going through a break-up in the public eye (with Ryan Seacrest): “I definitely hated that everyone had an opinion about what I was going through. At the time, I was constantly running and touring, which sometimes looked like I was totally fine and couldn’t care less, which wasn’t the truth. But it was my form of being able to deal.”

Oh, Julianne. You had been doing so well for so long and now I think I’m back to disliking you. She certainly thinks she’s already some huge star and that we were obsessed with her breakup and that we’re all just waiting to accept her as a movie star and singer, right? Not so much. She’ll always be the chick from Dancing with the Stars who showmanced Ryan Seacrest. IF THAT. As for her story about meeting Brooks… have you guys ever seen Teddy Sears? He’s incredibly handsome and a very talented actor. I can’t believe Teddy Sears was the one to set up Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich.

I hate Cosmo. They always have titles on the front like “Unbelievably Hot Sex Tips” and then you read the tips and they’re like “be yourself” and other very unhot nontips. Lol

Anyway, never heard of this girl.

    • Loulou says:

Did you ever see the infamous tip “put a donut on his d**k and eat it off”!? Thanks Cosmo.

      • Lurker says:

My husband nearly died laughing reading that one in line at the grocery store.

      • I Choose Me says:

OMG. I remember that. Yeah, no. My husband does not like sugary treats on his dick. Not that I tried it or anything. . . *shifty eyes*

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        Must be a big donut?

      • MoochieMom says:

My husband would eat the donut and go to sleep. I’d be fine with it.

      • Whitney says:

I REMEMBER THAT TOO!!! That was like a decade ago or more, but I still remember reading it, and even at like 15 thinking it was ridiculous. Speaking of outdated, anyone ironically or unironically ever read “Having it All”by Helen Gurley Brown? It was depressing and so backwards.

  2. Eggland's worst says:

Maybe, and I’m just putting this out there, she should show some talent in those departments before she is respected? I can think of a slew of actresses and singers much more talented that her. Of course, that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

    • Lama Bean says:

Ha. I was coming to say the same thing. I respect her as a dancer. Full stop. I didn’t even know she was trying to sing.

    • Betti says:

She’s a good actress and a pretty good singer, i saw her in Rock of Ages and she was good. She has a lot more talent than some of the more successful starlets out there.

  3. Erinn says:

Stop parading around your relationships, get some more acting classes or something, show you’re serious, and stop posting dumb stuff on social media.

You can’t expect the audience to assume you’re more talented and serious than you are when you’re doing nothing to prove it. So entitled. She did well as a professional dancer- but not everyone is good at everything. Maybe she needs to think about the possibility that MAYBE she’s just not as talented at singing and acting as she was at dancing.

  4. QQ says:

No Julianne, we neither care, nor are obligated to make you continue to happen now that Seacrest moved to a new Beard, BYE

  5. Nancy says:

Oh yes the talented Julianne. Is it true she’s dating Derek Hough? Oops……surprised she hasn’t disappeared by now.

  6. Birdix says:

I don’t understand the dislike–she seems fine. Why does everyone hate dancers so much here and want them (Benjamin Milkepied) to stay in their place?

    • Nancy says:

I love dance, particularly ballet. I don’t like Julianne or her brother. I don’t know if that show is still on the air but it has to be on its last legs, like American Idol. I think finally reality tv is dying a slow death, just in time for some good television to return. Fingers crossed.

  7. ADC says:

Yet another magazine putting a third-rate celebrity in its cover in Oscar-February when they should have any potential nominee, even if tis Vikander yet again.

  8. kri says:

Why is she pooping on dance? It’s her only real talent as far as I can tell. I cannot take her.

  9. Cate says:

I didn’t know she sang. Look up the music video for Is That So Wrong… There is hairography and twang and um “dancing” she really is going for being taken seriously.

  10. Pandy says:

She’s hustling! But if you gave to return to dwts as a judge because nobody else thinks you’re a singer and actress …. Well maybe concentrate on your dancing talents. Chica thinks she’s Ann Margaret. She’s not. She’s an irritating judge to boot.

  11. Sunshine Gold says:

She doesn’t have the chops as a serious actress or singer, so if she’s making a great living being a TV dancer then why not just go with that? (And I saw Safe Haven. It was dreadful.)

Love this with Cosmo. When I was in my 20th I couldn’t wait for the next issue because that was the only thing around that wasn’t 100 percent clothes and makeup and there was no other magazine format with women changing their lives except Ms.Magazine which obviously was a whole different level. Then some time back Harvard Lampoon do a Cosmo and it was hilarious. Going after their theme of what you can do to get who you want with your feminine wiles and a little makeup and mystery. Somehow it seemed to translate into you are not enough and here is how to fix it so the lampoon featured titles like “He yells at you, sleeps with your best friend and hates your family what are YOU doing wrong.” Maybe sad but still but remember the times.

“I want to be respected as an actress!” Poses in a bathing suit on Cosmo.

She’s probably harmless, but when she was “with” Seacrest and they were trying to make her happen, it was super annoying. I think she’s someone who would benefit from minimizing her publicity and focusing more on her work, if she wants to be a legit actress.
