Kate Hudson vs. Olivia Wilde: who wore the best Michael Kors at the Globes?

FFN_RIJ_GOLDEN_GLOBES_SET1_011016_51943503

I’m a long-time Kate Hudson Apologist. It’s not even that I like her that much or enjoy covering her, but I think she’s mostly fun and harmless. But at the Golden Globes last night, I had an awakening about Kate Hudson. There’s really something fundamentally THIRSTY about her, and that parched quality just comes across as… needlessly desperate. I think it’s also about the fact that she comes out to the opening of an envelope, and she’s done that for years. Her career is as a Fashion Girl/awards-show presenter. And that’s a little bit sad.

Anyway, Kate wore Michael Kors. Should I describe this as a two piece or a three piece? It’s literally three pieces – a skirt, a bandeau top and a matching fabric choker. I do not believe – and I have never believed – that an awards show is the place for a bandeau top. Even if you have the body for it (and Kate does have the body for it), the Golden Globes are not the place. And I do think the fabric choker just takes this next-level tragic too. Also: Kate got a beachy, piece-y lob. It just looks like she hasn’t washed her hair in a week.

Also in Michael Kors: Olivia Wilde. I… sort of like this? The dress, I mean. The dress is beautiful, the cut is great, it fits her beautifully and the color is amazing. I wish more women would fall in love with this rich maroon/burgundy color. My problem was with how she styled it. The necklace was too chunky for the dress, but I would have forgiven that if not for Olivia’s absolutely horrendous makeup. Why in the world did her makeup artist do this?!

I don’t like either. Half of these dresses could be from the Golden Globes in 1996.

    • tracking says:

Agreed. Though pretty much anything was better than Kate Hudson’s ridiculous dress.

      • V4Real says:

Kate dress is more Grammys, not Oscar.

      • joan says:

Kate looked hideous. I was shocked at how bad her hair looked, except so many had awful hair last night.

She was pulling up her dress while being interviewed — it was embarrassing.

She CAN look really great but not last night.

      • bluevelvet says:

Olivia hands down, not even close.

    • Rachel says:

I would’ve dated these two particular dresses two decades earlier than that. Although in Olivia’s case, I really think it’s the matching eye makeup that really throws it back to 70’s fug.

Kate’s dress(???) is just all kinds of I Dream of Genie formal wear.

I definitely agree with your 90’s assessment on a lot of the other dresses though. All that lace is definitely a 90’s throwback. Yikes.

    • Bridget says:

I didn’t even realize that Kate’s dress was a bandeau until I saw this picture. It was bad when I thought it was just a sequined column with that weird collar, but this?!? It’s BAD.

  2. minxx says:

Olivia, by a mile. Even with the horrendous makeup! The dress is one of my favorites at the Globes. The colour, the fit.. everything.

    • vauvert says:

Agreed, Olivia was far better. In fact if the dress had a tiny bit more fabric (I am so over the cut to the navel deep V) it would have been perfect. The makeup would have been fine if applied with a lighter hand.
I don’t care for Kate and never have. She hasn’t really done anything in what, ten years? All she does is make news for her “bod”, and showing up at every event. Oh and who she is dating…

      • Babalon says:

In the last ten years what Kate has done, is desperately vie for media attention.

        Because thirsty.

      • QQ says:

Welcome To the Club Vauvert, Ive never seen it for Kate or her “skills” or the ridiculousness of her doing Turkey after turkey and continuing to get invited to present things she’s never about to win on the strenght of “well she is petite blond and perky”

        Also That dress Is Hideous

So Is Olivia but she won this by a country Mile! i still think she reads OLD (she is still in her 20s People!!) but without makeup her features utterly dissapear so then This Happens!

    • Suzy from Ontario says:

I agree…that makeup! Whoever thought that would look good should be fired! Olivia is such a naturally beautiful woman, and this whole style just diminishes her look.

Ditto for Kate…She’s a pretty girl and yeah, great abs, but this dress looks tacky. Sometimes less is more!

    • Fran says:

      Agreed, such an amazing colour!!

    • JenniferJustice says:

Same here. Kate looks tacky, smeared and dissheveled.

    • FLORC says:

Olivia Of course! Not because I like her or the styling, but you put Rooney against Kate here and Rooney wins. It’s hardly a fair match.

And Kate looks… Unwell. Like she’s partied heavily or she’s tired. But her abs are so awesome the bloat goes all to her face. I want abs like that.

And Olivia’s everything looks laid on thick. Smile, hair, paint by numbers makeup.

    • Carol says:

yes, agreed. The dress was beautiful and so was the color. The make up was no bueno. And I would have preferred a less matronly looking necklace.

  3. Dani2 says:

Kate’s ensemble is actually a whole dress with a lot of cut out action happening, you can see that from the back.

And I much prefer Olivia’s look as well.

    • MB says:

Thank you! I think its actually pretty sloppy coverage to make a big thing about Kate wearing a three piece outfit when it is, in fact, a dress (one piece!) which can be easily seen with a quick look through the standard photos.

I dont mind it, but then again, I usually think Kate looks incredible so perhaps I am biased 🙂

  4. Div says:

Can someone explain to me how Kate keeps getting invited to things like this? She has bit parts in the occasional film and that’s about it. Even Jessica Alba makes more sense with her The Honest Company success.

    • Nancy says:

      Spot on Div.

    • pwal says:

She stays in shape… that’s about it. And nepotism.

And on another note, I was in the electronics section when the TVs started playing the Kung Fu Panda 3 trailer and strangely enough, the credits still listed Rebel Wilson, not Kate Hudson. It could’ve been an old disc, but if it was recent, that says plenty about the importance of KH to this flick.

Also that trailer during the arrivals ceremony buoyed me. JK Simmons is in it as the villain and hopefully, KH’s part, despite her bizarre showcase on ET, will be kept to a minimum.

    • agnes says:

      Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

    • SJO says:

She was the first in the long sad wave of nepotism that has taken over Hollywood since the 90s. Nowadays almost everyone is the offspring of someone famous.

    • JenniferJustice says:

I figured it’s because she’s Goldie’s daughter and Hawn and Russell have clout in Hollywood now, but I think her attendance is inappropriate and if it were me, I’d be embarrassed if my career were sagging like hers is. But then I guess all she’s got going on lately is being seen, so that’s her thing now. Just being there to be there and get photographed.

    • FLORC says:

She’s still in loads of stuff and still has strong connections. With her work out line also being heavily part of gift baskets last I knew.

Nepotism is true, but people forget she’s still working fairly steadily in that business if not high billed in current blockbuster films.
Things just look like she’s taken a step back on her own. If she was hungry for work she’s take nearly any part offered.
Plus! Let’s not forget how she is when single. Kate doesn’t work loads when single. She plays the field like a pro.

    • MB says:

She presented an award with her step-dad, I think.

  5. Kath says:

Kate makes me feel better about having skin breakouts in my 30s! I’ll hang onto that one flaw for inspiration…

  6. Lilo says:

Kate’s dress made me have 2000s fashion flashbacks. Not good.

  7. Nancy says:

Ricky made a comment about the people in the room who where there because of nepotism. The first person I thought of was Kate. I’m With The Band eons ago was her shine. Other than that, Nick Jonas’ fake cougar status is her claim to fame!???? Very generic.

  8. Naddie says:

Both are stunning and irrelevant. I was about to say I don’t understand Kate’s desperation, but I do.

  9. Granger says:

I’ve always thought Kate is the perfect example of someone who didn’t get into this business to *work*. She’s quite happy to spend three or four weeks a year on a set, filming a silly rom-com that doesn’t require any research or effort, but which garners her a very tasty pay cheque and the ability to spend most of her life working out, attending shows and events, and being seen. On the one hand, she appalls me. On the other, more power to her. She’s rich, she’s gorgeous, and she’s famous, and I think those three things are all she cares about.

  10. GiGi says:

Kate’s look was awful. Ill fitting, messy, blah.

    • Lauren II says:

Kate’s face looks puffy and broken out with acne. Not exactly the perfect picture of health. Where is Nick Jonas?

    • Carol says:

Although she has a fantastic body, that dress was just awful. And i hate the word “thirsty” but I have to use it here cuz girl looks THIRSTY.

  11. Snowpea says:

I just came here to say that Hudson has hideous skin, spotty and broken out around her chin/cheeks area. Well I’ll be! I even zoomed in to have a good look and I was amazed because her skin usually looks so fresh and clear.

Adult acne maybe? I had terrible adult acne when I was about her age.

    • Karen says:

Could also be the new makeup. She’s be wearing this extra-glow gunk at the lastfew events. Could have broke her out?

Her lip injections are wonky. She’s so beautiful, I hope she doesn’t tweak her face more… one bad nip and it’s a lifetime mistake.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Michael Kors needs to just retire.

    • FingerBinger says:

Kors should stop designing clothes ,he’s bad at it. However he does make good bags. I like his watches as well.

  13. Ankhel says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Revlon were to blame for Olivia’s, um, colourful look – she’s done some commercials with very similar looks for them.

And has she had some work done, or is it just that awful makeup which makes her eyes and brows look odd?

    • littlemissnaughty says:

It’s the makeup. Red shades around the eyes are super hard to do right and pull off. I would never pair a reddish eye with brightly colored clothes either. And she needs some lashes with it. The dress is gorgeous though.

    • Esmom says:

I also thought she had work done until I looked closer at her makeup. I can’t believe how terrible it is.

  14. Mandy says:

I’m an apologist too when it comes to Kate, but I hated this look. I hate everything about it, from the choker, to the cheap material, to the bland color.

  15. Barrett says:

with her step dad Kurt Russell as a presenter it seemed awkward bc she looked slutty. It took away from what could have been a sweet moment!

  16. kri says:

OL looks a billion times better. Kate Hudson’s color is too putty, or something.

  17. here's Wilson says:

Showing off your abs at an awards show? Oh no. This is not the beach! Some commenters might disagree but I wholehearted believe in dressing for the occasion. Next.

  18. Tiffany says:

Am I the only one who thinks Sedekis should have his backside kicked for wearing tennis shoes on the RC.

A woman would havr been crucified.

  19. Neelyo says:

Hate Hudson’s dress but I disagree about it not being appropriate for the Globes. It’s a tacky awards show and I miss the days of people having fun when they showed up there.

Bring back the 90s Lara Flynn Boyle! From cracked out ballerina to bedazzled rocker tee to Louise Brooks manqué with boa, she made the Globes fun. Now everyone treats it like it’s an Oscar rehearsal. So dull.

  20. Mellie says:

Kate Hudson looks like Kate Moss with this particular hairstyle. She aged herself tonight, she normally looks very young and fresh.

  21. Esmom says:

I have an irrational dislike of Kate and this look doesn’t do anything to change that.

    • smcollins says:

Lol. As do I, Esmom. Never been much of a fan. There’s just something so irritating and, yes, thirsty try-hard about her. If her parents weren’t Goldie & Kurt she wouldn’t be anywhere near the level of fame that she has. Nepotism at its finest.

  22. InvaderTak says:

That cranberry colored eye shadow I think only works on brown eyes, and you have to make it kinda dark. Use peach, not pink, as the highlight on pale skin. And make her eyebrows more noticeable and viola.

  23. Argirl says:

It seemed obvious to me that Kate Hudson was aiming for the worst dressed list. I liked Olivia’s look.

  24. lucy2 says:

I hate Kate’s dress. I know she’s all about showing off her figure, but enough already.
I like Olivia’s, but agree that necklace and makeup were a mistake.

  25. Bree says:

Unfortunately I have to say Kates dress is the style right now… I took my daughter prom dress shopping and this is what we found all over… Ugh

  26. felixswan2 says:

I think Kate usually hits it out of the park style wise, but this was a big no. I like Olivia’s dress, but her eye makeup is awful.

  27. K says:

Care Blanchett should kiss Kate Hudson’s feet because she saved her from the worst dressed of the night. Kate Hudson looks terrible that “dress” is horrible and really why I mean just why?!?!?

  28. Wentworth Miller says:

Kate dress would be cute on someone else at a different event. The color is awful. It’s too close to her skin color and the beach hair didn’t help.
13’s dress looks like a dress for someone older.
I don’t mind the J’s with the tuxedo.

  29. Beatrice says:

    Hated Kate’s three-piece suit–desperate, tacky and inappropriate!

  30. Sarah B says:

I’m going to call Olivia’s dress color Oxblood.

  31. NorthernGirl_20 says:

I love Olivia’s dress, the colour is beautiful.. Kate’s dress is awful but she has nice abs.

  32. Pants says:

I loved Olivia’s dress, but yes, that makeup was awful. I always hate that weird reddish eye shadow, it’s sickly looking.

  33. AlmondJoy says:

I feel like I’ve seen Kate wear something like this a million times before. She looks nice but because I hate pale/baby pink I’ll have to go with Olivia I guess.

  34. Rockin Robin says:

Kate…WTF!!!! That is dreadful and looks cheap.

  35. Another Anna says:

Hot take alert, you guys, but I don’t think Michael Kors is a very good designer. His stuff is basic and really only looks good on one particularly easy to design for body type. I honestly think that if a Project Runway contestant had shown Kate Hudson’s look it would have been ripped to shreds. Nina would have said this should have taken an hour to sew and looked boring. I get simplicity as a concept in fashion. But Kate Hudson’s dress is just lazy. I could have sewn that and I’ve only been sewing off and on for a year.

    • Bridget says:

I like Kors’ basics done well, it can really be a knock out when it’s right. But this looks like Hudson requested that the dress be cut into two (which actually happens sometimes). Is it possible Hudson wanted to show off her body to sell a few more Fabletics subscriptions and requested the chop?

      • Another Anna says:

It’s possible, I suppose. But the fabric still looks cheap and tacky. I think I had a bathing suit made out of a similar fabric when I was six or seven.

  36. Michelle DD says:

Well, she has a great body. And that’s about it.

  37. KBeth says:

    Kate’s dress is absurd.
I like Olivia’s look, great color & I don’t mind the makeup…not crazy about the hair.

  38. Carmen says:

Wilde’s dress would look great in another color. That color looks too much like dried blood.

  39. Grant says:

To me, Kate Hudson is like the female Matthew McConaughey. She has some talent and charisma, she’s just mired by the same shitty rom com roles that McC took up until the McConaussaince.

  40. Tallia says:

What did Kate do to her face? And when did she turn into the blonde Olivia Munn?

  41. me says:

It was a bad look. But just to let you know, that choker is actually attached to her top. When she turns around you can see how it’s all connected. It really looked as if she wore the top backwards. It would have looked much better had she worn it back to front !

  42. idsmith says:

That dress is exactly what I expected from Kate. She shows up to every single awards show – always in something VERY revealing designed to show off her awesome body. That’s all she does.

  43. Tredd says:

Kate is starting to actually LOOK rode hard and put away wet (vs. US all just KNOWING about it behind the scenes). Stand by. We’re about to see some crazy plastics.

  44. BJ says:

Olivia was in my Top 3 best dressed for the night. I found her flawless head to toe. Simply stunning.

  45. Mrs. Darcy says:

I would have been thrilled to put Kate Hudson’s ensemble on my Barbies, that is some gloriously tacky three tiers of trash. Olivia looks stunning, I would have refused to leave the house if my partner was wearing idiot shoes like that to the freaking Golden Globes though!

  46. What's inside says:

Olive Wilde has this locked down. Kate not so much.
