Prince Harry, feminist: ‘It cannot just be women who speak up for girls…’

149722PCN_Prince25

Thank you for all the HONKS FOR HARRY earlier this week. I was genuinely worried that people were sort of losing interest in Prince Harry, just because the comments on his posts have been down lately. While it’s true that Harry hasn’t been that controversial lately, he’s still noteworthy and he’s so much more interesting and appealing than his brother. Unfortunately, I’ve heard that many major UK papers didn’t even bother sending journalists to Nepal for Harry’s trip. Which is awful, because his trip went really, really well. Harry did dozens of events, he was extremely respectful of the culture and the people, and he was very well-received.

One of the last parts of Harry’s trip was making a speech at the opening of the Nepal Girl Summit in Kathmandu. Harry joined Nepal’s first female president, Bidya Devi Bhandari, in calling for a focus on girls’ education and an end to child marriage. It’s basically Harry’s coming out party as an international, intersectional feminist, and I AM HERE FOR IT. Here’s part of his speech (you can read the full piece here):

“I am delighted to have the opportunity of opening this event alongside President Bhandari. Madam President, you have championed the opportunities for women and girls in Nepal for many years and it is a privilege to share this stage with you today. Over the last decade, I have been hugely inspired by working alongside those striving to help young people achieve their full potential, sometimes in very difficult circumstances. My charity Sentebale has helped thousands of children access education and healthcare in Lesotho, Southern Africa.

Closer to home, in Nottingham, England, I have seen first-hand the transformational effect of even the smallest opportunity in keeping a child away from gangs, keeping them in school, and on track to a more fulfilling and prosperous life. While the unique challenges faced by girls is not a topic I have spoken much about in the past, I think it’s important to acknowledge something that has become obvious to me and is already known to everyone in this room: there are way too many obstacles between girls and the opportunities they deserve. Whether it’s a girl in Lesotho living with HIV; or the talented young woman in Britain who doesn’t get taken seriously because of where she grew up; or the 14 year old girl forced out of school so she can get married here in Nepal; we need to acknowledge that so many countries and cultures are failing to protect the opportunities of young women and girls in the way they do for boys.

I believe it is vitally important for men like me to acknowledge this as loudly and openly as role models do like President Bhandari, the US First Lady Michelle Obama and activists like Malala. As the First Lady has said, change needs to come from the bottom up. We won’t unlock these opportunities for young women and girls unless we can change the mind-set of every family and community. To achieve this, it cannot just be women who speak up for girls.

So let’s be open about some of the challenges facing young women.Globally, 62 million girls are not getting the education they deserve. Two thirds of the nearly 800 million people who were never taught to read and write are women. Around the world, more than 700 million women alive today were married as children and nearly 250 million of them were married before the age of 15. Here in Nepal, nearly half of all women who are today in their twenties, thirties and forties were married before their eighteenth birthdays. And a little under half gave birth while still in their teens. It may be obvious to say it, but girls who marry young stay at home. They don’t finish school. And they soon become locked in a cycle of illiteracy, poverty, ill health and, ultimately, powerlessness.

How can this cycle be broken? We all know what the answer is – education. Improved access to education can transform lives, families, communities and ultimately entire countries. When girls finish their schooling, they gain skills, knowledge and confidence – in short; they are empowered to improve their lives and the lives of everyone around them.

[From The Daily Mail]

“It cannot just be women who speak up for girls…” I love you, Harry. If you want to get more involved with women’s issues, I would totally be down with that. Honk if you love Feminist Harry.

Swoon. Fetch my smelling salts you saucy ginger prince.

  2. lower-case deb says:

so… HRH Princess Emma ‘Hermione’ Wales (nee Watson)?

in that one picture, he’s completely swamped in scarves and flower garlands; i saw a picture of old women enthusiastically jostling to put flowers around him, and the enthusiastic one putting the red mark on his forehead. it got so deep and big!

    you’d think he’s a rockstar.

      YESSSS

    • Esther says:

yes lets give men standing ovations for basic lip service and even more importantly lets reward them with beautiful women for that!

    • notasugarhere says:

Royal matchmaking. Watson is fluent in French, which is the language of conversation at the BRF dinner table. Wealthy in her own right, knows how to function in the public eye. Of course she shut down speculation with her Little Princess allusion in the face of it.

‘Marrying a prince is not prerequisite to being a princess’. – Emma Watson

      • Esther says:

she is not fluent in french and she only dates lowkey guys anyway.

      • notasugarhere says:

She holds her own in interviews in French, I suspect she could handle HM and Philip’s French.

      • Esther says:

i dont know where you have that info from but its not true, she recently talked about having bought a rosetta stone packet for french, that does not sound like she knows more than a tourist.

      • TotallyBiased says:

Rosetta Stone has multiple levels in languages, they get pretty advanced. I speak several languages fairly well that I would consider getting Rosetta higher levels for if I could afford it.

      • TotallyBiased says:

        Oops..

      • notasugarhere says:

You can find her french interviews online. She admits she isn’t as good at it as she used to be, but keeps working at it to get back to her previous level and beyond.

      • milietan says:

Hmmm I’ve read just about every bio on the BRF and never read anything about them conversing in French at the dinner table. You learn something new every day!

    • Seán says:

If anyone is interested in learning languages completely for free, Duolingo offers about 50 dynamic written, visual and audio lessons in the following languages: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Irish, Turkish, Danish, Russian, Norwegian, Esperanto, Ukrainian, Polish and Welsh. You just sign up to their website for free and can also download an app that works in conjunction with it.

      • AngelaH says:

Thanks! I’m going to check that out.

      • Abby says:

I love duolingo! I’ve done it for French… Mainly before I go on a trip over there. Did it this morning actually! It’s an addicting game sort of format that I find really fun. Do you think it really works? It seems too fun to work! Haha.

    • Jib says:

He is his mother’s son- he comes across as caring, personable, and big hearted. His brother comes across as cold, petulant and with a cruel streak.

      Honk for Harry!!!!!

  3. Lora says:

Ah Harry… I’ll honk all day

  4. AG says:

    A million zillion honks.

  5. HH says:

    HONK.

Admittedly, I’ve been commenting less on Harry threads, but it was out of self-preservation. There’s always that one photo of him with a child or animal that damn near explodes my ovaries. I can’t keep risking it. 😛 😉

  6. GreenBunny says:

Honk! I didn’t think he could get any hotter, but I’m on fire. His speech was phenomenal.

    • Original T.C. says:

      +100000

I’ve been saying this forever. Thanks Prince sexy Ginger for saying it to everyone: it cannot be just women who speak up for feminism. Equal rights for women is everyone’s problem just like it was for civil rights. Extra honk for the shout out to FLOTUS Michelle Obama. Sounds like they bonded!

I loved Harry’s list of STATISTICS on the disadvantages young girls face. I don’t care if it was written for him (just like it is for world leaders), reading it out loud is the key. I hope some US media cover his speech.

    • my3cents says:

This prince is on fire…(singing to the tune)

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

      Yes, I agree completely. HONK!!!

  7. Jess says:

Awesome! He just makes his brother look worse and worse.

    • Chris says:

I agree. Do you think William is aware of this or that he is so delusional that he doesn’t even see the difference between the two of them?

      • Zimmerman says:

He’s aware and can’t stand it.

      • Chris says:

        @zimmerman
It’s too bad William doesn’t rise to the occasion and use it as a bit of motivation. instead I think he wishes Harry would just do less and be less loved so he would look better.

      • Hudson Girl says:

Ohhh, his brother is aware. Today he allowed PR to release pics from a photographer who just so happened to capture him “comforting” a patient during a pickup for his helicopter hobby. (Daily Mail)

Hero Will to the rescue- to counteract Harry’s positive Nepal press.

      • The Original Mia says:

@Hudson Girl, poor Willie. Resorting to Tom Cruise PR tactics to improve his image. Not going to work, though. Harry is genuine, while William is a self-indulgent, spoiled, manchild.

      • Betti says:

@HudsonGirl – i just wish the press would out them as calling the paps for the HW inspired pap strolls.

      • paranormalgirl says:

too bad he’s the spare and not the heir.

      • pleaseicu says:

He’s totally aware. He hates it. Instead of changing or being inspired by Harry Normal Bill does what he can to undercut Harry. Even did his usual PR grab with the Normal Bill hero pics today trying to steal the newscycle. Without fail he always pulls a stunt to grab headlines whenever Harry is getting positive press for a speech or charity/activity he’s involved in or on one of his tours. And if that doesn’t work to his satisfaction, he’ll conveniently release a negative story (or stories) about Harry, the black sheep, the womanizer, the party prince.

What I don’t get is why the Queen, Charles, the courtiers, and/or whatever government department/agency helped arrange Harry’s tours don’t do more to shut Normal Bill down when he does this in the middle of these tours. It’s one thing to try and screw with positive pr or headlines after Harry gives a touching speech at Sentebale. Totally disrespectful and shady but it’s Harry’s private charity. It’s another thing entirely to screw Harry and his efforts over while he’s in the middle of a diplomatic tour on behalf of her majesty’s government.

    • Shambles says:

I know two brothers that come from a wealthy family. One is about to finish a degree in ecology and go on to be a research scientist. Amazingly intelligent. Really funny. Creative, you name it. The other is working for his parents–nothing wrong with that, but it’s clear that it’s because he has no other option. He’s pretty dim. He’s set parts of the house on fire multiple times and had no idea how to put them out. He’s gross and mysoginostic when it comes to the ladies. Funnily enough, he’s the older brother. Coincidence? You decide.

The point is that I truly believe, by accident of birth or upbringing or what have you, that sometimes the one sibling gets the majority of the great traits while the other is a toad. Privilege might have a lot to do with it.

    • Meggie says:

It does seem that William and Harry are a complete reversal of the usual royal pattern. If you look at the Queen and her sister, Elizabeth embraced the duties of here role, while Margaret tended toward purposeless self-indulgence (and many vacations *coughsoundlikeanyoneweknowcough*). Though he did some stupids in the past, Harry really has become a leader and a force for good. It appears that his older brother is not nearly the man that he is.

  8. TT says:

I was thinking yesterday that Harry and Elizabeth Olsen would be a hot couple. What do you all think?

    • Magnoliarose says:

No way! The sexy ginger is all mine.

    • milietan says:

Hmmm. That would make a great story. Prince Harry and a beautiful blonde American actress. Kind of like a Grace Kelly story, except of course Harry isn’t the reigning regent. Any of you Brits care to chime in? How would an American actress as Harry’s wife go over?

  9. Mia4s says:

He had a rough start in adult public life but has redeemed himself 100 fold. Bravo!

And on a shallow note…damn he is handsome. Now that is a prince! 😉

  10. Jules says:

How about making him King now?

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I am totally 100% fine with that. Long live Harry!

    • Amelia says:

      Totally up for that.
A beardy king to take the role seriously after Charles.

HONK, HONK, HONK for more pictures of Harry covered in flower garlands and powder paint!

    • michelleb says:

Since I am French Canadian – Vive le roi Henri!

    • Betsy says:

Isn’t that where this is all headed? Who really think Will wants to the work of a king?

      • notasugarhere says:

He wants the adulation and the income from the Duchy of Cornwall and eventually Duchy of Lancaster. If William leaves, it isn’t going to be voluntarily.

      • LAK says:

Seriously people, that No 10 petition…..

        Sixer, will this wording do….

‘petition to remove the William MountBatten Windsor, commonly known as HRH Duke of Cambridge, and all his heirs, currently George Cambridge and Charlotte Cambridge, from the line of succession to the British Crown and all it’s realms, by right of Parliament and the people of united Kingdom and the realms, effective immediately.

      • Sixer says:

        Perfecto! (Its not it’s.)

        What are our reasons?

      • LAK says:

        Sixer: autocorrect is a b!!!!

Reasons have to be worded carefully so that it doesn’t look like a frivolous petition.

        1. His frequently stated aversion to his future role as King of the United Kingdom and its realms as stated publicly to Katie Couric, (have to google date and proper name of interview, but it was interview for Jubilee celebrations), his #whateverworkmeans interview last summer, date and programme, his long forgotten interview with Johnny Hari and the Independent interview (have to google exact date).

        2. His statement that he can be a part time royal and part time King ( #whateverworkmeans interview last summer). The UK and the realms deserve better.

Rather than point out work ethic, we should find as many interviews as possible where he directly says he is putting off royal work and is reluctant.

        3. We should also point out that despite his clear reluctance to take on and prepare for his future role, he has been provided with an official residence at KP, an official Bentley and an official helo, all of which are sitting around gathering dust despite more than £5M of taxpayers’ funds being allocated to provide him with these tools as incentive.

      • Sixer says:

        Me likey!

At some point, we will have to get some proper sources together.

A petition would be the funniest thing ever!

  11. Snazzy says:

A bazillion honks for feminist Harry!!

  12. Katy says:

LOVE every aspect of Harry! Major honking going on here!

  13. savu says:

    brb ovaries on fire

  14. Ivy says:

*honking even louder than on the previous post*

This is a really lovely speech and watching Harry doing do well recently makes me feel like a very proud mother (which is weird considering the fact I’m 8 years younger than him).
And now he even talks on feminist issues. If I were British I’d try to set up a coup d’état to overthrow Normal Bill and his dull wife and get Harry closer to the throne.

    • Melly says:

Compare his speech to any of Kate’s speeches. I thought Harry was supposed to be the “dumb” one lol

  15. mytake says:

He is the business! Honk, for certain!!

  16. Christin says:

He is succeeding, in spite of his throw-anyone-under-the-bus brother.

I hope he stays on track with his causes, and does not dial it down to make Normal Bill and Culinary Catherine look better.

  17. Sushi says:

    Honk, great embassador for England.

    • Redgrl says:

Absolutely! Love him. Well spoken, personable, compassionate & eager to learn. Wonderful qualities. Oh – and hot….

  18. Maum says:

Ironically that is the kind of speech that Kate Middleton should be making.

    Good on him.

    • am85 says:

Can you imagine The Buckets trying to speak about child brides in India, which has a higher rate than Nepal? Or gang rapes? Or acid victims? There’s a cafe in Agra near the Taj Mahal that is run by victims of acid attacks (http://www.sheroeshangout.com). After they’re finished recreating Diana’s lonely bench pose, they should stop by. Well…maybe not. Those poor girls and women have been through enough.

And major HONK for Harry! Always read his articles, but rarely comment. Can’t help but give him heart eyes after reading his speech.

    • K says:

Except no it’s not. It wouldn’t be nearly as impactful as with Harry because of exactly what he said it can’t just be women standing up for girls! Everyone has to for it to changes

I love him and this was so beautifully said. He really does take his role as public figure seriously it is honorable.

    • Melly says:

Kate is keen on feminism *hair twirl*

    • Yea, no–totally agree. We shouldn’t praise people for speaking out for the disadvantaged. Especially when they come from privilege….

      /sarcasm

    • Linn says:

Sorry, but the main point of your articles is that men that PRETEND to care about women rights but secretly don’t give a f*ck and only do it to get laid or look good to the media or men that claim to be feminists and than turn out to be rapists are nasty, horrible people.

Yes, James Dean is not a feminist and nobody should support him.
Yes, a man who calls himself a feminist and than calls women whores or sluts because the enjoy sex is a nasty person.
But not all men that support feminism are like that

No, we shoudn’t automatically worship every men (and women) who claims to be a feminist and I certainly don’t do so, but that doesn’t mean we cannot appreciate men who truly (seem to) care about the matter.

    • als says:

Please don’t put that idiot on the same page with Harry. The difference is obvious even if you don’t know any of them personally.
You have to develop the ability to spot idiots not to call all men idiots.

    • Alarmjaguar says:

Just because some men are pigs, doesn’t mean they all are. Look, Harry is correct, we need make allies and male voices and I will celebrate that because they are few and far between. I’ll celebrate anyone calling themselves a feminist because it is still something many people are scared of doing. Should that overshadow the hard work that many I acknowledged women do, no, but we should celebrate them, too, not tear down allies.

    • Esther says:

James Deen was only the most recent and extreme case, no need to focus on him to argue against it. the point still stands. this celebration only attracts sociopaths.

there is also a funny tumblr:
      http://malefeministsoftinder.tumblr.com/

      • The Original Mia says:

Instead of looking for examples of men behaving badly, I’ll check out the twitter accounts of Matt McGorry of HTGAWM, Mark Ruffalo, President Obama, VP Biden, and other men who understand that they can and should stand with women to fight for equal rights and opportunities for girls and women.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

The fact is that when someone like Prince Harry speaks, a great many people pay attention. When one considers that he was born a royal, grew up in a very privileged environment where male heirs *always* took precedence over female heirs, has decent personal wealth such that full-time employment is not required, and does not have a wife or daughters who could potentially influence him on feminist issues, this speech becomes even more powerful. While I realize that it was likely written by a PR person, his references to Michelle Obama and Malala Yousafzai as well as the work his charity Sentabale does in southern Africa strongly suggest that Harry contributed to the text and approved of everything he said. It would have been VERY easy for him to have spouted a few rah rah platitudes about improving the lives of Nepal’s women and girls, but he did not do that here.

My suspicion is that his Army service likely played a big role in shaping his beliefs. He saw women and men serving in the same roles and working together to achieve common goals. He saw women and men die for their countries and injured soldiers of both genders struggle to rebuild their lives. In Afghanistan he also undoubtedly saw how differently men and women are treated and learned that female soldiers had very different wartime experiences. I am glad he has chosen to use his privilege and platform to encourage men to be feminist allies.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

This. I do think there are some instances of men unfairly being put on a pedestal for being feminists (and worse, women being dismissed for doing the same thing, but I think people are just happy to see someone like Prince Harry using his privilege to promote equality.

      • Tina says:

Great comment! I also hope he was influenced by his grandmother.

      • Redgrl says:

        Well said bearcatlawyer!

      • Cricket says:

This speech was awesome! Regardless of whether he wrote it, he presented it and in an authentic way! HONK HONK HNK!!!!

Can anyone imagine Katie Laze Quitter presenting such a speech? way too many words and all those statistics. :/

  19. I am meh on getting pregnant…..but man I want to have his ginger babies!

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I cannot even get pregnant, but I would pursue every assisted reproductive technology under the sun to have his kids.

  20. Meg says:

    Love Harry!

  21. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    He is so adorable.

  22. Sixer says:

I’m less enamoured of Harry than most of you guys, what with being a dyed-in-the-wool British republican an’ all. But if these anachronistic royal beings are going to continue to exist, I will HONK for Harry on the basis he’s doing the job as it is (anachronistically) supposed to be done. With the added bonus of charisma.

I’ll also HONK for Michelle Obama, since I feel pretty much the same about her role. We should have moved past the point where a presidential spouse has to go about being a decoration for worthiness, but Michelle Obama is allowed because she’s awesome and manages to make the role interesting and inspirational instead of a ridiculous throwback. I love Michelle Obama (more than I love Harry).

    • GlitterTears says:

Yes! A honk for Prince Harry and a honk for first lady Obama! She is such a good role model.

    • lilacflowers says:

Ah, Michelle. I couldn’t help but notice Sunday that, as President Obama became the first sitting US President to set foot on Cuban soil in 88 years, he was holding an umbrella over Michelle. Forevermore, when that historic moment is viewed, it will be evident that Barack had his priorities straight and covered Michelle from the pouring rain. Michelle rocks.

      • Kitten says:

You guys are making me sad. She was the best FLOTUS we ever had.
I’m really going to miss her….

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Kitten, she may not run for office but I don’t think Michelle will disappear. They may take some time off but I wouldn’t be surprised if Michelle turns up as Secretary of Health & Human services or some other cabinet level position at some point in the next decade.

      • Magnoliarose says:

Me too Kitten. She is incredible and elegant not to mention smart and…sniff sniff.

      • Lady D says:

I’m going to miss her too. She has been the best, and I adore her. I plan on following her after the White House, I think she is going to continue to do wonderful things.

    • woodstock_schulz says:

totally agree with your comments Sixer.
Honk for Harry and Michelle Obama!!

    • bluhare says:

I agree. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to get some republican thoughts. I swat them away, but they pop up. If William was like Harry I don’t think I’d have any. But he’s not.

I saw the Irish Guards were at BP yesterday. The twitter comments were pretty funny . . . he was there looking for Kate because she never gave him his shamrock, and Palmer said that when he asked him how he was feeling because of that, he said “rough”. Stupid but I thought it was funny!

    • notasugarhere says:

If they’re staying in D.C., I hope it is her turn to shine. Maybe she can keep working with Harry, only on Sentebale in the future instead of Invictus.

      • Meggie says:

She’s certainly welcome to come to Canada, where I’m sure our avowedly feminist Prime Minister would be happy to work with her. And she can bring President Hottie.

    • Sadezilla says:

Agree! Harry and Michelle are two of the good ones!

    • K says:

Sixer Michelle hasn’t been ceremonial she has actually had huge impact on policy. Her let’s get up and move campaign while most media focus has been on the PR part has had huge monumental policy impact that has changed our schools and will change our labeling and food companies. She is quiet about it but she might have been one of the most policy impactful First Ladies ever. She is so much what we should encourage our daughters to strive to be.

And honestly when I think about the Obama family leaving the White House I get sick.

      • Sixer says:

That was kinda my point, you know?

(Although I still maintain that a person should not be expected to do good works on the basis of a position held by their spouse or a position conferred merely by being born. Or that unelected spouses shouldn’t be policy makers. We have ballot boxes for policy. I don’t approve of a First Lady role any more than I approve of a constitutional monarchy. This does not diminish my huge admiration of Michelle Obama, however. If we must have backwards-ass roles like princes and First Ladies, then these two are making good fists of them.)

    • Sixer says:

By the way chaps – he’s staying an extra week with a charity that’s rebuilding a rural school. And for once, he’s being covered all over BBC rolling news. Which is good, considering we have Brussels and the disaster budget taking up almost all the space.

      • bluhare says:

He’s really coming into his own, isn’t he. I think whoever said that the army was the making of Harry was right.

      • Sixer says:

There is an ease about him. And it’s a quality this benighted family is in desperate need of.

    • Poisonous Lookalike says:

I’m a small-gov type (not a conservative, though) myself, so I think I understand your point, Sixer. What appeals to me most about Harry is that his care and his efforts to help are so genuine. He has a wealth (pun intended) of resources to bring to issues he cares about, and he does so, along with a lot of his own personal energy. He’s a wonderful example of being the change one wants to see in the world.

      • Sixer says:

Exactly, I object to the position, not necessarily the person. I may object to both position and person (Normal Bill) or to the position but not the person (Harry, Michelle Obama).

    • Alarmjaguar says:

So many honks for Michelle Obama, I adore her!

  23. Ada says:

I love you harry. You guys will not believe what women go through in my country Nigeria. Just last week, our corrupt senators threw out the bill that would have encouraged equality. Siting that it is against sharia law. One even made an ignorant comment encouraging men to marry more than one wife in the name of “taking care of women” on international women’s day. Such a shame. This is why I get upset with new generation “feminists” that make statements by walking around without sanitary pads or tampons during menstruation. Women have real problem in the 3rd world countries. Some are married off ones they are 8. Some are humiliated, hair forcefully shaved off and made homeless after the death of their husbands while some are kidnapped forced into islam and forced to marry men old enough to be their grandfathers. Let me stop here. Have a nice day.

    • Kitten says:

This (and many other reasons) is why we still need feminism.

Also, walking around without a tampon just seems like a dumb idea.

      • From what I’ve read, some are doing it to protest the taxes on tampons/feminine products…as a “luxury” item. Ugh. I know a senator in my state is trying to pass a law that gives girls free tampons in schools (which I think is an amazing idea)…….and she says that she can’t even get guys to talk about the bill without making faces and acting like juveniles. Grown ass men who are supposed to help make our laws.

    • Sadezilla says:

This is a great comment. Thanks for sharing it.

    • ladysussex says:

Good point Ada, and I’m so sorry for what is happening in your country. I’d heard of that “free flow menstruation” or whatever it’s called, but I really thought it was a parody of radical feminism. I had no idea it was a real thing!

    • Cricket says:

great comment Ada! thanks for sharing it.

  24. cindyp says:

I love him! Please keep the posts coming. He puts his William & Kate to shame

  25. jb says:

Honk BUT why is he not covered by British press? Is it his number in line to the throne? (5th after the kids, right?) is it because he doesn’t wear fancy dresses? I feel like he’d get more coverage if he had a girlfriend. Or something.

    • bluhare says:

He’s being covered in the Daily Mail and Telegraph, and the reporters are retweeting on Twitter, but you’re right. Kate opening a charity shop got more front page news it looks like from here.

  26. MizFabulous says:

Lord, have mercy, he is PERFECT!

  27. Jaded says:

Look at all Harry has accomplished while his indolent, spoiled and seemingly uncaring brother and sister-in-law faff around pretending to do something meaningful with their lives.

Step it up you two…you’re being totally eclipsed by a man who could easily have fallen into the trap of rich layabout but who understands the value of hard work and being in a position where they can make a difference in the world.

    • GiGi says:

Yes! He makes William (I’m sure unintentionally) look so uptight and rigid by comparison!

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Granted, it does not take much to look better than Normal Bill and Kate Laze Quitter, but Harry really is putting forth the effort to do good in the world.

  28. INeedANap says:

    HONK for Feminist Harry!

And he’s right. The ladies, we can make all the progress we want but will hit a wall (or a glass ceiling…) without the support — or at least lack of obstruction — of men.

He seems like he gives great hugs.

  29. kri says:

I need a whole flock of geese cause I want ALL of the honks I can get for Harry. Oh, yes. I don’t care what gender, background or income bracket you are from-if a person feels this way and speaks their mind, I’m all in. Go, Ginger, go!

  30. notasugarhere says:

This the first time he’s stood up for this.

    Telegraph
    9 male feminists of 2013
To tie in with Anne Dickson’s book launch: Teaching Men to Be Feminist, Emma Pearce has compiled a list of men who spoke up for women’s rights or ‘came out’ as feminists this year

    1. Prince Harry

The Chime for Change concert saw countless celebrities coming together in support for Women’s Rights and our Prince didn’t want to be left out. In a video link that aired during the concert he said: “Thank you for showing your support for women’s rights…We all need to focus on the issue that effect women around the world and we need to do it now. We know that when women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them – their families, their communities, and their countries.” Prince Harry kicks off our list and shows how empowering women is good for everyone.

  31. Karen says:

Education for all is not an automatic given in many countries around the world. Men and women both need to speak up together, to give all the right to a basic education and end child marriages (for girls and boys) and early pregnancies which leave the girls at home and boys at low paying work to support a family too young.

  32. Christina says:

Honk Honk!! Never enough Hot Harry

  33. Anon says:

HOOONKKKK! I actually am not even remotely attracted to Harry, but THIS is what I like to see out of the royal family.

  34. vava says:

    Honk, honk, honk!
I’ve been following his trip with great interest, too. He certainly is at ease with people and they love him. Very cool to see. As I read his speech, I was trying to imagine Kate saying it, and all I could envision was a lot of hair flipping, awkward pauses, and odd facial expressions. It’s difficult not to bring the stilted Cambridges into the picture because they are just so much different than Harry. I’d like to see them get less press, and see Harry continue to move ahead and away from them!

  35. lilacflowers says:

Honking for the fact that Nepal has a woman president.

  36. Crumpet says:

    HONK!!!!!

  37. VC says:

Yes! Love him. So much more mature than his brother

  38. Sunnyside says:

I always read Harry stories but rarely comment. HONK, just so you know I’m here.

  39. Fan says:

    HONK!! What a wonderful speech

  40. Betsy says:

    Nicely done, Harry.

And, truly, when is Shallow Bill going to abdicate his spot?

  41. Jennifer says:

    FEMINIST HARRY!!!!

  42. Tina says:

Between Harry and Andy Murray, I am honking for feminist blokes all day today.

  43. Kitten says:

I just find him so incredibly sexy. Sigh.

  44. QQ says:

I’ma Have to add my Honks for Harry coverage AND Feminist Harry, that sh!t got me hot!

  45. Alexa de Vere says:

Good for him. This is not a neat, cut and dry issue- it’s littered with potential miss steps, cultural faux pas and very political. So it’s brave, gutsy stuff and Harry is showing real balls here. i love Harry- honk!

  46. Alexa de Vere says:

It’s galling though that his sister in law is arguably one of the worlds luckiest girls in that she has been afforded every possible educational opportunity any girl could aspire to. And has arguably done next to nothing with it 😔

  47. Lainey says:

    HONK!!! X100
Just when you think you can’t love this ginger prince anymore he goes and does something like this! This is how you give a speech- passionate and full of proven facts. Loved it

  48. mimi says:

    HONK FOR FEMINIST HARRY

  49. nicole says:

love harry. it’s a shame his brother cannot have this compassion and charisma.

  50. Tris says:

Had completely age-inappropriate dream about his majesty last night. Yummy feminist!!!

  51. Angelica says:

Mentally cheating on my husband with Harry right now….swoon!

  52. The Original Mia says:

Harry’s trip has been a resounding success. I’m so proud of him. There’s been coverage. I’ve seen pictures on other UK sites. W&K’s personal photographer, who dates Waity’s assistant, went on the trip as well.

That was a powerful speech. I mean…wow. Informed. Wasn’t patronizing. Didn’t mansplain. Well done, Harry. Your mother would be so proud of you.

Honk for Harry! Bring on the age of the Ginger King!

  53. sjs says:

HONK for Feminist Harry! This is how you royal.

  54. kibbles says:

Bravo to Prince Harry! He is already more of a feminist than his sister-in-law (who have set women back a century with making chutney for the Queen as one of her few major accomplishments in life) will ever be. I’m very happy to see Harry discussing women’s rights. I think he is the perfect royal spokesperson for this issue and all of us women will love him even more. He needs to become King!

  55. Carol Hill says:

    Honk! Honk! Honk! Love him.

  56. Magnoliarose says:

Harry is so much more than his insufferable brother and his side kick. I love how he left his rascally ways behind and has become a worthy man with substance.

  57. TeamAwesome says:

I follow Kensington Palace on Instagram and have loved seeing my feed blow up with all these beautiful, colorful pictures. Harry manages to make all of the scarves and flowers work, but can you imagine how much of an absolute TOOL Normal Bill would look like instead?

How long before they find a PR bus to push Harry under?

  58. Lucy says:

    *Heart eyes intensify*

  59. Lainey says:

Just when you think he can’t get any better he’s staying on a further 6 days to help with the aftermath of the earthquake. 😍

    • vava says:

I just read that as well. AWESOME!

    • hogtowngooner says:

Yes! I came here to post that but you beat me to it 🙂

Couldn’t see Bill and Wastey doing that! They’d say they want to “get home to their children,” which may be true if they’re gone for a couple of weeks, but Kate used that excuse to get out of doing the St. Patrick’s Day thing so I think she’s burned that bridge with the public now.

      • Lainey says:

Yup a lot of people have copped on to the fact that they use their children as an excuse when they don’t want to work. And even without them I don’t see them staying onto help especially with something as labour intensive as building a school.

      • vava says:

Workshy Will and Keen Kate would never in a million years stay on to help rebuild a school, much less stay at the worker’s camp. They’d get dirty! Who would do Kate’s hair? The whole notion is quite laughable. Harry, keep up the good work and leave those losers behind. Harry needs his own staff, he needs to distance himself from the lazy louts.

    • Jib says:

So he’s not going to Kenya to Jecca’s wedding with Worksy Willie??

  60. Tiffany says:

So is Jason with him on this trip. Harry really seems to be listening to his people.

  61. SKF says:

    Love him.

  62. Pants says:

Just give him all the honks!

  63. CoKatie says:

Always read but never comment on your Royal postings, but will definitely do so for this one! HONK, HONK, HONK for Harry!

Come out from behind your brother’s shadow, kid. He doesn’t deserve your protection. Especially when it seems to be in his interest to bury your achievements.

The brighter bulb will shine brightly!

  64. NeoCleo says:

I didn’t think it was possible for me to crush more on this man than I already do. I always read every Harry article although I do not comment that often.

Harry is definitely more like his mother than is his big brother. I’m thrilled that he is taking on her mantle for charitable works.

  65. Betti says:

As much as the Cambridges are turning me in a Republican – Harry, I will be your Princess!!!! Call me.

  66. harry is a testament to being yourself and thus that may be flawed and not the most polished but its human and that will win you the heart of the people…. this is what his mother Diana solidified and owned, rip

  67. TotallyBiased says:

    HONK!
    #HeforShe!

  68. Liberty says:

Honk! And easy to see why Mrs O likes him so much.

Poor Billy. Time to run a baby picture of Charlotte!

  69. Jen says:

    honk forever

  70. ClaireB says:

I wonder if BP has started to look at Harry seriously or if they’re still holding out hope that they can make the Cambridges toe the line. I know Harry is on record saying he’s happy he’s not the heir, but he’d make a much better modern, ceremonial head of state than the Lazy Lamebridges.

  71. blairski says:

GREAT speech! Thanks for sharing. I love coverage of Harry!

  72. bluerunning says:

    Honk!

I don’t even know that Harry’s the type “celeb” guy I go for, but it’s something about him that draws you in. I’m not even sure I’m attracted to him, so much as I’m just kind of… proud of him? Like, I want him to do well and I’m just so strangely proud of him when he goes out and does good in the world… does his duty, and does it well!

    • LAK says:

And that’s what emotional investment in the monarchy keeps them in place. Something the cambridges are yet to understand. I bet in another generation, Estelle of Sweden will have devoted fans who’ve watched her grow and are emotionally invested in her.

      • vava says:

        HI LAK,
I completely agree with you on all counts. Estelle will have a fond and beloved group behind her, not only in Sweden but world-wide.

Harry had some troubles a few years back, but it seems to me as if he’s found his “mojo”. And that is awesome. William, on the other hand is so uptight, I just can’t quite picture him getting the sort of ultra warm response by the public that Harry has. I do believe it’s because of his personality traits. I can relate to that too, I am not especially extroverted myself. This is why someone like Harry is going to be very beloved by the public, whereas William will not be – unless he works hard to get the love. William’s choice in a spouse didn’t help the cause, either. She’s not exactly WARM.

      • mee says:

Honking for hot harry! Amazing, because he seems to have really grown up and into his own from the frat-boy he seemed to be.

But I do feel a little sympathy for William bc I think he’s just not naturally extroverted, while Harry is. We introverts just aren’t as natural with people – especially strangers – as the extroverts. That said, I don’t follow all the news about W &K and how they are shirk their duties so maybe there are greater character flaws that William has beyond natural reserve.

  73. eatingpie says:

HONK. Honestly, take all my honks. What a lovely, lovely man. A complete breath of fresh air compared to his brother.

  74. Jemimaleopard says:

    SWOON!!!!!!!

  75. Beckysuz says:

Oh my lord…yes! All the honks for Harry. So much goodness in that speech. I love it

  76. Sam says:

    God damn!!! Honk Honk HONK!!!!

  77. Smd says:

Honk!!! He is delightful to watch, read his comments and just observe his interactions. I can understand Will not being as at ease with the public, my younger sister can give speeches and work a room! Me not so much, but I’m incredibly proud of her and Harry too. Could forgive Wills his lackluster people skills if he focused on other areas or just spent more time and “effort.”

  78. ib says:

    HONKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  79. katy says:

Honking for Harry! What a great speech. And he seems so genuinely passionate and excited about the people and the causes.

  80. Gippy says:

HOOONK!!! There is no way Harry is less intelligent than Normal Bill – I’d like to see Normal Bill attempting a speech like this! Harry draws you in every time!

  81. Who ARE these people? says:

    honk

  82. Molly says:

    Oh honkin’ hell, yeah!

  83. India says:

Harry is the real thing. Unlike those other two. The laws of succession should be changed and Harry should be given the top job. Otherwise, the monarchy is doomed.

  84. Brandi says:

    Love Harry! 😀

  85. hogtowngooner says:

He’s SO much more relaxed with the public than W+K. William looks offended half the time and Kate grins like a fool.

  86. jammypants says:

so in love with this man

  87. Lady D says:

    Many, many HONKS.

  88. pleaseicu says:

    Honk! He’s wonderful.

  89. BostonLawyaGal says:

I love Feminist Harry! I also love photos of Harry playing sports and interacting with children.

  90. sauvage says:

    I don’t even care anymore that I don’t have a car.

    HOOOOONK!

  91. Birdix says:

His smile seems so genuine (while William seems to be stretching his mouth over his teeth to emulate a smile that looks like a grimace). honk for harry here too

  92. danae says:

Omg I didn’t think it was possible to find anything else to love about Harry, but yes, yes it soooooooooo is. So well spoken, and written 🙂

  93. Becks says:

Honk! More Harry please, he’s just awesome!

  94. MerlinsWife says:

    Love.

  95. Nanea says:

Late to the party, but here’s another…
    Honk for (feminist) Harry. ™

  96. Mary says:

All of the honks for feminist Harry!!!!!

  97. Fireweaver says:

This is a great example of what a modern royal should act like. Works on behalf of the monarch, and still has own interests and causes. Keeps private life fairly quiet (well, usually.unless he’s being thrown under the bus), actively engaging (or a fine faker!) With people he interacts with.

  98. Laura says:

HONK!!! Such a better royal ambassador than William

  99. Ella says:

HONK!!!!! I love feminist Harry so much.

  100. raincoaster says:

    “The Feminist Prince”

It sounds like the title of a modern fairy tale. And it ends with the two of us on a tropical island, alone.

  101. Goodnight says:

If People should be gushing about anyone following in Diana’s footsteps, it should be Harry.

He seems like an awesome person. He works hard and doesn’t seem resentful that he does triple the work of William and gets a third of the credit. He seems to understand that he’s been given an incredible platform to bring attention to different causes and it seems to me he knows that that’s what is important.

He could bring so much goodwill to the RF if he were the heir.

  102. Emma33 says:

Dhanya bad Harry! (Nepali for ‘thank you’)

I spent 4 months volunteering for a remote village school in Nepal last year and will be going back for another few months in May. I really wish the international media had covered Harry’s visit…Nepal is an amazing country, with incredibly strong and warm people, but the challenges facing it are immense. Arranged marriages of 18 or 19 year old women are still common practice in the village I was at. A fellow volunteer went to one wedding and said that it looked like the bride was crying during the ceremony (and not from happiness…she had just met her husband two days before).

    Anyway, more power to Harry!

  103. Kate says:

Take note, Cambridges. This is what being a royal adult looks like, not your idiotic whinging.

  104. rosiek says:

Wonderful press for Harry. Am convinced his heart is in the right place. Good deeds like this will not be forgotten.

But, be real. The press can turn on him in a heartbeat. If he becomes engaged, or gets married he will be picked apart. Favor with the press is short lived and a tenuous thing. Hope enjoys the good press while he has it.

  105. Donna says:

I always click on the Prince Harry posts first, please keep em comin’! They are my “feel good” posts!

  106. Therese says:

    Dear Celebitchy,

People, at least me, are not loosing interest in Harry. I think we just don’t comment on him because there is no controversy to comment on. Please don’t stop posting about him. This brought me near to tears. And WHO writes his speeches? If he does his own writing, I am super impressed. I am anyway. So just a note to you: please don’t stop posting about him.

I do think his brother is getting a bum rap. I wonder if his and Catherine’s lesser appearances is deliberate to lower their profile in view of the fact that she has, what did I read, 15 stalkers, or at any rate, threats to her security. Just wondering.

And a note to you: remember when you had Old Hollywood Monday way back when. Could you make an old girl happy and bring it back? Love you and your site. XXXOOO
