Gina Rodriguez: ‘I don’t look like a skinny mini and that’s OK’

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez’s CW series was just renewed for its third season. This fall she appears in Deepwater Horizon (the trailer just dropped) and will soon work with Ex-Machina director Alex Garland on Annihilation. Gina was recently interviewed by Yahoo Style for their I Yahoo’d Myself series. She kicks off the video by saying, “It was going to be very difficult to fit into what Hollywood’s perception of what an ingénue is or a leading lady because if we want to talk about real life, I slay, okay?” What comes across in the interview is Gina’s zest, her playfulness and her confidence that no matter what Hollywood says, she is exactly how she is supposed to be.

She found fame on CW’s hit show Jane The Virgin just two years ago.

And 31-year-old Gina Rodriguez reflects on her rising stardom in a new interview with Yahoo! Style as well looking gorgeous in an accompanying sultry photoshoot.

Talking to Joe Zee for its I Yahoo’d Myself feature, Gina was asked how she deals with the ever-present showbiz pressure to stay thin.

‘Of course I’ve fallen into the pressure, 100% I’ve fallen into the culture.’ she said.

‘If you look like the swimsuit model then everyone’s gonna want you and the money’s going to flow through and everything’s going to be grand and dandy.
‘That’s bulls**t’ the Chicago-born beauty added.

‘You go to television and film and it does add 10lbs,

I don’t look like a skinny mini and that’s OK too. That is beautiful also’

[From Daily Mail]

Gina has long credited her parents for her confidence. She told E! News last year, “I grew up with two amazing people in my life. My parents were so phenomenal when it came to body image and to beauty and being very comfortable in your own skin.” She reinforced this to People, “[My dad] prepared us to be able to look at billboards and magazines and say, ‘This is not the only body type that is beautiful

You can see the Yahoo Style photoshoot here; it’s gorgeous and was inspired by Gina having co-founded the lingerie line Naja, which employs single mothers from Colombia working from home. Gina still has her I Can and I Will production company and is working on a memoir. When I look at any famous person I wonder if they are somebody I can hold up as a role model for my children. In Gina’s case, the answer is yes.

Feeling her oats. 🙆🏽🙃 #ohImSorrymyDressIsUndone #ohThatShoulderStrapDarn

I love Gina Rodriguez. She seems like a really warm, caring person and I wish her all the success in the world.
Although I’m no longer as amazed by Jane the Virgin as I was with the first season, it’s still a great and progressive show to watch. Last episode they managed to feature the Bechdel Test playfully into the plot of Jane’s writing career and it was lovely to see it presented to a big audience. Go Gina!

  2. Lucy2 says:

I really like her, she seems smart and determined. I’m glad to see her getting many opportunities and taking them, but a memoir already?

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. She seems lovely, and has accomplished a lot for her age, but it always makes me smile when someone that young writes a memoir.

      • Pepper says:

I don’t really see the issue? Many memoirs are about a few days in a person’s life, a few weeks, a few months, a few select years. I’ve read memoirs from 80yr olds that were entirely focused on one year of childhood, one summer in their 20’s, a few interesting weeks at their job etc.

Somewhere along the way we started associating the term memoir purely with full accounts of an older person’s life. Really a memoir is just a collection of memories. It might be memories of an entire life, it might be memories of a day, or memories drawn from a specific theme. Some of the greatest memoirs were written by young people.

  3. tracking says:

She has such a great smile, love her on Jane the Virgin. Such a silly, implausible (and funny and heartwarming show)–she carries it. Along with the darling actor who plays Rogelio.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Agree. Love that her zest for life in the program mirrors her reality. She is so spunky & upbeat.
I also agree 100% about the actor who plays Rogelio. Perfectly cast, unbelievably hilarious.

    • Malificent says:

I was just telling a friend of mine that they have to watch JtV. All of the actors are really solid, but the actor who plays Rogelio is brilliant. It takes a true comedic gift to play a character that vapid and clueless and still allow him to have layers. And Rogelio in the lavender Braveheart kilt with the purple war paint on this face from a couple of weeks ago….

      • Pansy says:

Rogelio is vapid and clueless, but lovable and funny and caring. I love that character and the actor! “Matelio” kills me!!

      • vilebody says:

If you like Jaime Camil (Rogelio), both El Cielo en tu Mirado and Pulling Strings are on Netflix and are adorable! He’s also apparently in the Telenovela version of Ugly Betty, but as a serial binge-watcher who has already used up a fair number of sick/vacation days, I deemed it best not to start watching.

      • sanders says:

        l looove that baby…so cute!!

  4. Breakfast Margaritas says:

Wondering how long it will take for someone to say she looks “unhealthy” because she’s ok with her weight…

    • Crumpet says:

But she pretty clearly is a healthy weight, so I don’t think that is going to happen. She has a gorgeous figure and is pretty clearly a healthy BMI, waist to height ratio, etc.

    • perplexed says:

She’s not plus-size though. She’s in that middle category that’s hard to define. Agents probably do, but I don’t see how regular people could. She looks like the type of person who works out, but has a naturally bigger build (i.e bones?).

  5. manda says:

I really like her and LOVE that she used the term “skinny mini”!

  6. Oli says:

Can this finally be a post were the comments aren’t rude about someone else’s body, please no more I’m concerned/care bs.

  7. sigghh says:

If she’s fine with it, nothing else matters I guess

  8. Goldie says:

Well Gina isn’t remotely overweight. She’s like what… a size 6? So I doubt that even the concern trolls would have much to say.

    *meant to reply to Oli

    • Oli says:

No they will, people don’t care about talking about what other people might be insecure about because they don’t feel anything (hurtful) when they bring someone else down.

It’s interesting some many people want to jump on someone for something they don’t even know, but if it was the other way around, I know they would be devastated.

Maybe some of you out their don’t have to worry about weight and aren’t insecure about it, but what if someone was talking about your acne and they made comments like “she’s looks like she got stung by ten thousand bees, wish she’d put a paper bag over her face so I don’t connect the dots”. Acne and weight and anything psychical related and sometimes mental and emotional are things people don’t have control over sometimes.

I’m typically a pessimist but I know that the world can and will be a better place when there is more love then hate. Those sayings like “don’t say anything if you don’t have anything nice to say” shouldn’t be taken as a suggestion it should be a rule.

      • Crumpet says:

I think you may have taken some past comments personally (I know I have). But I have to remind myself that it’s not about me – they are the ones with the problem. If they want someone to put a bag over their head, that reflects on THEM, not the person they are criticizing.

    • Josefina says:

It shocks me how the media makes people lose touch with reality. Gina’s shape is so common and… Normal.

    • Kitten says:

She doesn’t have to be overweight. If she was a “skinny Minnie” then everybody would be accusing her of having an eating disorder.

I’m guessing she’ll be ok though because she’s what people like to refer to as “normal” weight (whatever that means).

ETA: Sorry, I just saw your comment Josefina. I like the word “common” better.

      • Oli says:

@crumpet I’ve never taken that personal, I was trying to speak for the people who might have. My point I was making with the acne is you might not be insecure about a particular thing but someone else might be. The overall point I was just trying to make is there is no need to comment on someone else’s health. That’s not anybody’s job except their doctors.

  9. Sarah01 says:

She is gorgeous and I’m glad she isn’t skeletol skinny and look like lollipop. She is so gorgeous, love her hair and smile.

  10. Incognito says:

I adore Gina. She comes across as such a warm, caring and positive person. She’s also very committed to giving back to those who are less fortunate, don’t have opportunities or are struggling. She’s a great role model. I also think she is beautiful. Physically, yes, but also her spirit comes through in her eyes and her smile. I wish her continued success.

  11. Lambda says:

Jane the Virgin: my absolutely not-guilty pleasure.
    #TeamRogelio

    • Nur says:

Same here! Rogelio my brogelio! My husband loves it too and aint ashamed to say so. lol!
I also love Gina, she absolutely carries the show, which is such a rare incidence for me wrt most of the leading ladies I have seen (Im especially looking at you, Catriona from Outlander)…

    • Lambda says:

I’ve only seen an episode and a half of Outlander, and I was so ready to like it (kilts! time travel! oh yeah), but the main actress seems a little… stiff?

  12. Kitten says:

She is a total knockout. That pic of her in the black dress is GORGEOUS.

Love what she said about her parents.

  13. kri says:

I really like her. So much talent and seems like an awesome woman. And I love her body.

  14. JenniferJustice says:

She is a beautiful woman and good for her for not conforming to the Hollyweird beauty standard. She talks like she’s obese but she has a great body. She’s just not bony. I Hope she maintains her stance and doesn’t succumb to the pressures later.

  15. Alex says:

She’s lovely. Strong personality and conviction. In the short amount of time she’s said a lot about body confidence and Latino issues. She’s a gem.
Side note: I also love that she gave her GG dress to a girl for prom. And the girl suggested paying it forward to another girl after. Looks like Gina’s dress will be traveling such a sweetheart

    • imqrious2 says:

I’m all for a “Sisterhood of the Traveling Dress”! Hmm… sounds like a movie, doesn’t it *wink wink* 🙂

  16. QQ says:

GAh! I Really find her adorable! i hope her career continues to do well!

  17. Psu Doh Nihm says:

We actually saw the Deepwater Horizon explosion. We were on a cruise coming back from the western Caribbeans and we were standing on the deck and a flash of light appeared then a huge plum of smoke. We watched the smoked for the longest as we passed it. We are from Louisiana as were many passengers on the ship. The entire mood shifted to one of worry and terror as panic stricken passengers tried to get in touch with family members who were known to work on off shore rigs. It was a sad, sad time. Not to mention how our economy is still feeling the effects of the oil spill. Our seafood took a major hit, putting many fishermen out of business and frankly I don’t feel like the taste of raw oysters has ever recovered.

  18. HoustonGrl says:

Ok, this is the problem with Hollywood, that someone like her has to apologize or defend her weight in some way, even though she’s completely thin.

  19. word says:

She is beautiful. Regarding her size, she looks just below the average size of an American woman.

  20. INeedANap says:

I’ve seen her in person (was in Chicago for a conference and saw her on the street, I think she was with her parents?) and she is gorgeous. Electric mega-watt smile. And she is fairly petite — clearly someone who is strong and healthy and enjoys cake, but still quite slender. It was insane to me, looking at her in person, that an entire industry would deem her “unacceptably heavy”. What are the rest of us supposed to do with our organs?

  21. Cupcake says:

But she IS a skinny mini, just not by hollywood standards.

  22. bliss says:

    I Love Her.
