Patty Duke, actress and activist, has passed away at the age of 69

Child prodigy and political activist Patty Duke, née Anna Marie Duke, has died at the age of 69. Ms. Duke was known for her outstanding portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker on Broadway at age 12 with Anne Bancroft. Both went on to reprise their roles in the 1962 film adaptation, which earned Ms. Duke an Academy Award, making her the youngest recipient to win it at that time. Following on that success, she went on to star in The Patty Duke Show in which she played “twin” cousins Patty and Cathy Lane. In addition to her Oscar, Ms. Duke would win three Emmys and two Golden Globes during the span of her career.

Patty Duke, an Oscar-winning actress renowned at midcentury as a child star of stage, film and television, who, amid public struggles with bipolar disorder, went on to cultivate a respected screen career in adulthood, died on Tuesday at a hospital near her home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She was 69.

Her husband, Michael Pearce, said the cause was complications of a ruptured intestine that Ms. Duke suffered on Thursday.

Ms. Duke came to wide public notice in 1959, when, at 12, she starred as Helen Keller in the original Broadway production of William Gibson’s drama “The Miracle Worker.” Anne Bancroft played Helen’s teacher, Annie Sullivan.

For her work in the 1962 Hollywood film adaptation, in which she and Ms. Bancroft reprised their roles, Ms. Duke won the Academy Award for best supporting actress.

She came to even wider attention the next year, with the debut of “The Patty Duke Show,” the popular ABC sitcom in which Ms. Duke played the dual roles of Patty Lane, an unaffected Brooklyn girl, and her worldly, British-accented “identical cousin,” Cathy Lane.

[From New York Times]

Ms. Duke’s, childhood was marred by tragedy, mostly at the hands of John and Ethel Ross. The Ross’ were New York theatrical managers who became Ms. Duke’s guardians after they seized control of her career and who subjected her to years of torment and abuse. When they changed her name to Patty, they told her “Anna Marie is dead. You are Patty now”. During the investigation of quiz shows in 1959, Ms. Duke, at the behest of the Ross’ perjured herself before a New York grand jury about receiving the answers in advance when she appeared on The $64,000 Challenge. When she had finished her testimony, one of the congressmen pressed her on whether she was telling the truth. The scared 12 year-old Ms. Duke said, “No, sir. Everything I just told you was a lie” and proceeded to give the accurate account.

Breaking free from them, Ms. Duke, who preferred to be called Anna Marie outside of Hollywood, was diagnosed bi-polar disorder in 1982, married four times and became mother to three sons, including actors Sean and MacKenzie Astin. She went on to have a lengthy career both on film and within the industry. In 1985 she succeeded Ed Asner in the role of Screen Actors Guild President. She was a tireless educator and advocate for the fight against AIDS, once telling a crowd in West Hollywood, “I have two sons who are about to become sexually active, and I think they should be educated about the dangers of AIDS, just as they are educated about birth control.” In addition to AIDS, gay rights and mental health, Ms. Duke fought for a nuclear freeze and to resurrect the ailing ERA.

God speed Anna Marie, may you rest in peace.

    RIP

  2. LAK says:

When you hear aboutbthe managers of child performers, it makes you wonder why anyone would willingly subject their child to the industry.

    RIP Anne Marie

    • Christin says:

My father didn’t like the idea of pushing a child/children into show business, and now I see why. He commented in the 1970s (about a well liked sibling band) that it is just a way for parents to make an easy living at children’s expense. In most cases, that seems to be very true.

And Patty’s only seen the sights a girl can see from Brooklyn Heights, what a crazy pair…RIP Ms. Duke

I started watching The Patty Duke Show when Antenna TV was airing it. I was pleasantly surprised at how well she played Patty and Cathy. I knew her from The Miracle Worker and I remember when she disclosed her manic depression back in the 80s. It was a very risky move, since HW has less tolerance for women with ‘issues’.

I just saw her on some commercials, either for insurance or phones, with some of the Patty Duke Show cast.

      May she RIP.

    • Luca76 says:

Totally loved that show watched it on Nick at Night during the 80s.
I also loved both versions of The Miracle Worker RIP

    • Liberty says:

RIP. Saw episodes on Antenna also. So talented, and the Miracle Worker was amazing.

May she rest in peace and may her sons take comfort in their happy memories with her.

    • cannibell says:

Yes, this. I remember watching “The Patty Duke Show” in reruns as a kid and loving it – and her. When she started advocating for stigma reduction around brain disorders, I fell in love all over again. May her memory be for a blessing. (Also, she was married to Gomez Addams….what’s not to love about that?)

  5. Belle Epoch says:

    Why did her intestines “rupture”?

    • Christin says:

I don’t think they indicated a specific cause. My guess would be along the lines of diverticulitis leading to infection/bursting, which can be sudden and highly life-threatening.

I saw some speculation that a colonoscopy gone wrong can have similar effects.

    • KB says:

It sounds incredibly painful. Hopefully it wasn’t.

    • Susan says:

I read somewhere else she died of septicemia, which is basically blood poisoning. I’m completely talking out of my butt here, but I wonder if it was a colonoscopy gone horribly wrong (ruptured intestines), a subsequent infection and ultimately, blood poisoning. So sad. She was young, so I can’t see this as an expected thing a la long term disease.

I’ve also heard lately there is talk of adjusting expectations for colonoscopies due to the increase in incidents as you mentioned.

Nonetheless RIP Anna Marie. We need more women in the world alive today like you.

      • holly hobby says:

Yes I read on another news article that she died of sepsis from complications of a burst intestine. So young, so soon. RIP AM.

      • KB says:

As if colonoscopies weren’t terrifying enough

      • Christin says:

During the past few years, I have known three people (one aged late 70s, two in their 40s) who have experienced a sudden, critical situation like this. Even the younger two were hospitalized for weeks, critically ill and each requiring at least one surgery to remove the damaged section that ruptured.

My aunt was the older one, and she described it as suddenly feeling as if she had the flu (doubled over in pain). She went to ER and was in surgery the same night to remove a portion of intestines. Bacteria/infection leaks into the system and can be out of control very quickly.

  6. Magnoliarose says:

    RIP Anna Marie.
Her granddaughter looks just like her. It’s a sweet photo.

  7. Brin says:

RIP along with your equally talented co-star, Anne Bancroft. Both well deserved Oscar winners for “The Miracle Worker”.

    • Christin says:

I remember the first time I watched them in TMW (movie). Absolutely stunning performances.

Anna was ‘Patty Duke Astin’ during my growing up years (very popular on TV shows, game shows, etc.). May she have peace now.

  8. Neelyo says:

    Sparkle Patty, Sparkle.

    RIP.

  9. DesertReal says:

I remember watching the Party Duke show on Nick at Night and enjoying the hell out of it. It wasn’t until later that i realized she was the child in one of my hall of fame favorite flicks- Hellen Keller. RIP Madam.
Also- i had NO idea she was Mikey from Goonies mom. Mind blown.

  10. mom2two says:

Rest in Peace, Anna. I always liked her and I respected her for the causes she spoke so passionately about.
Her son Sean, on his FB page, is raising funds to start a mental health initiative in her name. He said it is something she wanted to do before she died.

  11. Rhiley says:

I love The Patty Duke Show and The Addams Family and The Facts of Life, and of course, The Goonies so this family holds a special place in my heart. My mom and I were just talking about Patty Duke a couple of weeks ago while reminiscing about some of our favorite roles on television. I seriously hope she did not suffer any pain, and that her family can be comforted knowing that she has left an indelible mark from all of the good work she has done in the world. Her sons Mackenzie and Sean both look so much like her while looking very different from each other. She was a beautiful lady, inside and out.

    • Christin says:

John is 85 now. Haven’t seen him in years.

Regarding Sean, I just learned about his ‘four fathers’, which is fascinating. He seems to have a very positive take on things.

      • Laura-j says:

Gomez is still alive? I thought he had passed away. This is the best news I’ve heard all day!

I loved Patty Duke in everything and they were kinda my 70s dream couple! Gomez and Neely! She was Ana making woman.

    • KB says:

      OBSESSED with Addams Family!

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I loved The Patty Duke Show as a child, and still remember all of the words to the theme song. It’s so sad to think of it now and know how desperately unhappy she was then. She had many struggles, but seemed such a decent person. Rest in peace.

  13. She was a wonderfully talented actress and a caring soul who used her fame to make a positive difference in the world. RIP.

    • KB says:

She really did. Not everyone with that kind of childhood can overcome it. She did so much with the platform she was given.

  14. Jen43 says:

She had a terrible childhood and a rough life despite her success. It was very brave of her to discuss her mental health issues. I hope she is at peace.

  15. swak says:

Grew up watching The Patty Duke Show also. Also remember her in Valley of the Dolls. RIP Patty!

  16. JudyK says:

I LOVED Patty Duke…she was an incredible dramatic actress (and I am speaking of her adult years). What a loss.

  17. Darlene says:

RIP, you were much beloved. <3

  18. OrigialTessa says:

Loved her. Reruns of the Patty Duke show on Nick@Night are a highlight of my childhood. “Cousins, identical cousins…”

  19. lucy2 says:

I had no idea those guys were her sons, and then I just saw a photo and they looks so much alike.
After such a trouble childhood and many struggles in her life, I hope she is at great peace.

  20. K says:

This is sad. I use to love watching reruns of Patry Duke when I was home sick from school. Sounds like she lived an incredible life.

  21. Neelyo says:

I took my screen name from her iconic performance as Neely O’Hara in VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.

    • Katenotkatie says:

Neely! <3 When she first appears onscreen, wearing a man's shirt and tights and singing on a platform, is pure magic. She'll always be a legend.

  22. KB says:

So talented. I didn’t know all that about her childhood.

    • Christin says:

I had no idea about it, either. She seemed to be on TV throughout my childhood and teen years, when she went public with her mental health issues (very groundbreaking for a celebrity in the early 1980s).

It was only yesterday that I read about her childhood mistreatment, which is horrible.

  23. kri says:

I was not born when the show was on air, but of course I had an idea who she was, and her boys. I had no clue about what happened to her as a kid. good god, the things people do to children. I admire her for her advocacy, and I wish her peace.

  24. islandwalker says:

    RIP Patty.

  25. EscapedConvent says:

Hecate, thank you for this lovely post. The Miracle Worker was shattering, and I can still remember it. But I think my favorite memory of her is in Valley of the Dolls. Etched in my mind permanently—-“I’m Neely O’Hara!!”

    • pwal says:

I remember this TV movie from the early 90s where she played a grieving mother of a murdered teenaged girl. Tiffany Amber Theissen was the daughter, and her so-called best friends killed her because they were jealous of her looks and her family. One of the girls even moved into her house and Patty assumed a sort of surrogate mother role. When Patty found out the truth… man.

  26. KB says:

    She aged really well too

  27. Spike says:

She just celebrated the 30th anniversary of her marriage. She posted or was interviewed about it. She seemed to be extremely happy.

    • kori says:

She went by Anna Pearce in her private life. She had so much turmoil, it’s lovely that her last half of her life was filled with love and happiness. RIP

  28. Kathy Willett says:

I loved everything about Patty (Anna Duke) she was an amazing actress. I’ve watched a lot of her movies and tv programs. I loved “The Patty Duke show” She was in another movie called “Billie” I saw that on tv. She was about 16 years old and a runner in track. Everything I’ve ever watched she was great. I’m going to miss her a lot. RIP Patty Duke. No more suffering for her. She was way too young. She was a spokeswoman for a lot of causes. Just an amazing woman. So sorry! Prayers to her family.

  29. Finally Fr33 says:

Please don’t forget Valley of the Dolls…she will forever be Nealy O’Hara to me 🙁
