Mischa Barton ‘completely out of her element’ on DWTS, making excuses

OC alum Mischa Barton, 30, seems to not be enjoying her stint on Dancing with the Stars. Last week, she and partner Artem Chigvintsev turned in a bland tango. This week, their interpretation of the cha-cha on the show’s Latin night received another lukewarm reception from the judges. Mischa could be seen holding back tears as judge Bruno Tonioli critiqued her performance, saying their cha-cha “didn’t fit to the music.”

In rehearsals, Mischa did nothing to hide her lack of enthusiasm, rolling her eyes and dismissing most everything Artem had to say with a disinterested “whatever.” Artem told the camera that “I feel like Mischa’s being her own enemy. If she’s not inspired…it’s very hard for me to make her do it.”

The couple received a combined score of 15 out of 30 from the judges, worse than last week’s score of 16 for their tango on the premiere episode. After they received their score, Mischa took a defensive stance and delivered a laundry list of excuses as to why their performance wasn’t up to snuff. She told the show’s host, Tom Bergeron, that “We’ve had a really rough day of me not being able to hear the song.” She then told hostess Erin Andrews, “It’s been a really rough week. Today was a really bad rehearsal…the live band, suddenly today I was being thrown by everything. It is what it is.” And, after the show, she told US Weekly that she was under the weather. Umm, yeah, okay. Mischa and Artem didn’t have to sashay away just yet as Geraldo Rivera and his partner Edyta Sliwinska were eliminated on Monday’s episode.

A source close to Mischa told PEOPLE that the actress was “trying really hard, but she’s completely out of her element” and added that Mischa “didn’t really have any sort of deep desire to learn to dance, and she hadn’t really watched the show before she was cast.” That could probably describe most of the contestants on this show, right?

Mischa is blogging about her DTWS experience for PEOPLE. Prior to Monday’s show she wrote “I’m excited for Latin week tonight because we are doing a cha-cha-cha. It’s a bright, fun dance and I’m excited to get to show off that side of my personality.” If that personality is cardboard cut-out, she certainly showed that off. Will she survive to dance another week?

She is acting weird as f*ck on the show, and her attitude is even worse. She is acting like a spoiled brat that was asked to complete community service or something. She is an embarrassment to her whole generation and she should have gone home instead of Geraldo.

    • Froggy says:

Was going to say all that. Agree completely. At least Geraldo was having fun.

    • Naya says:

She clearly thinks herself too good for it which means she was probably “forced” to do it by her reps for 1) the money and 2) improve her very poor job prospects.

      • KB says:

I think it may be a defense mechanism. She’s not good at it or afraid to fail, so she acts like she’s above it. The fact that she was about to cry when confronted with harsh criticism tells me she does care.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree with KB. That’s the first thing I thought of. When I was young, I was terrified of failing in front of people or appearing foolish, and if I thought I was failing I would get angry and try to pretend that I didn’t care because whatever, this is so stupid. It wasn’t conscious behavior, and as soon as I was alone, I would cry my heart out and be mad at myself for not trying harder. Therapy, Mischa.

      • Kitten says:

I don’t watch the show but isn’t a lot of this stuff just clever editing a la reality TV? I mean, is Mischa really that bad or are the producers just trying to generate ratings by making her the villain?

As GNAT said the fact that she cried shows a level of sensitivity that belies this idea of her being an awful person.

Or am I just giving her too much credit?

      • Christin says:

Some people just cannot handle any perceived criticism, however constructive.

      • cleveland girl says:

There is no “editing” here to make her look bad. She is doing that all on her own.

      • Kelly says:

        She’s 30. Not that young.

      • Birdix says:

Yes, there is clever editing–and there have been complaints before that contestants were thrown off by the “package” that they show before their dance, thinking it wasn’t representative of them or their experience, even upsetting. Mischa has so little energy in her movement, no sense of rhythm and an odd way of holding her body in the torso, it makes her seem a little off. perhaps the editors are playing off that. In any case, she won’t last long, voters hate lack of enthusiasm, and there are some amazing movers this season (football players and a female boxer) who are much more interesting.

      • Birdix says:

It’s also clear that Erin Andrews feels sorry for her and is worried she’s having a bad experience, which is telling. There is an element of her being thrown under the bus, an easy person for viewers to dislike.

      • Wren says:

I’m sure it’s a combination of bravado and attitude to hide how much this is bothering her and editing. I hate screwing up in front of people and putting on a “ugh this is dumb I don’t even care” face is the easiest way to hide that deep vulnerability. The producers are probably capitalizing on this to make her “the brat” and editing footage to make sure we see that side of her at all times.

    • JudyK says:

Geraldo was absolutely horrible, but at least he had a good attitude. (Let me add that I can’t stomach Geraldo, except to say that he was a good sport in this situation.)

I’ve never seen such an entitled, spoiled brat in my life as Mischa. If contestants could be fired from the show, she would certainly deserve to be in that category. Her attitude is DEPLORABLE.

    • Erica_V says:

Of course she’s acting weird she’s a total stoner right?

    • AG says:

The response of consciously or subconsciously pretending not to care totally reminds me of this great song from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend this week…it’s very apt!
      http://www.cwtv.com/shows/crazy-ex-girlfriend/i-could-if-i-wanted-to/?play=60dc6d41-3faf-4fa4-9070-77e29cf27573

    • holly hobby says:

Yes at least Geraldo had some enthusiasm. But they always vote out the older contestants before they eliminate the younger ones.

  2. Alix says:

“…a really rough day of me not being able to hear the song.” Unless there was a broken speaker somewhere, this statement makes little to no sense. Crybaby.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

Yeah, a dress rehearsal is not where it falls apart, it shows she didn’t put the work in before that I think.

    • Brittney says:

      She means hear it live.

I don’t even watch the show and I’m not a fan of hers… but I’ve seen it a couple times and based on her other statement about the band, I assume it means she didn’t get enough (or any?) rehearsal time with the live version of the piece.

I personally can’t imagine learning a routine to a recorded song and then having to perform it with a live band. I was a figure skater, and those live band ice show specials on TV always amazed me, because your mind and body learn to connect every spin, step, and jump with the exact rhythm of the music. Live music is never a 100% recreation of the beats and timing, and once you’re “off” by a little, you feel off the whole time.

      • Patty says:

Not being able to hear the music or having difficulties with the live band is a piss poor excuse. Especially during this season, where one of the Stars is deaf and is killing it.

      • Fanny says:

Actually I believe they spend most of their rehearsal week learning the routine without any music at all. They teach the celebrity to count out the beats, and then that routine can be put to lots of different music. (They have done that before with “instant dances” where they don’t even get the music until 20 minutes before they dance.)

There have been contestants (not even very good ones) who have gone out and performed routines correctly even though the band screwed up and the music was 8 bars ahead or behind where they were supposed to be.

In any event, Mischa is basically the only contestant in the history of DWTS to blame a poor performance on the live music being different…which is BS because she was complaining about the music even when they were rehearsing.

  3. serious says:

Wow, she has really lost her looks….but I cannot pin point what is different maybe just more weight on her face?

    • perplexed says:

Her teeth look a bit different too, I’m not sure. Although I think she mostly just gained a bit of wight in the face. Her cheekbones showed more before, like a model’s. I don’t think she looks terrible, but most of her beauty resided in looking like a model (good cheekbones, blank face) rather than in having a face that lights up a room (like some other actresses have).

    • Ji-Yun says:

For most of her time on the OC she was underweight. She admitted she was suffering from cycles of bulimia and anorexia. That can do a number on someone, especially if combined with other vices (alcohol, medications, etc.) and issues (anxiety). However, personally, I don’t think she’s “lost her looks”. She’s just at a more natural weight for her, one where she doesn’t have to starve to maintain as she did on the OC. I think she looks pretty.

      • GloWorm says:

“She admitted she was suffering from cycles of bulimia and anorexia.”

No she didn’t, because she never suffered from an ED. Seriously, go find me a single direct quote where she ever said what you are claiming she said.

What she did say however was that her metabolism as she got older was not the same as when she was 16/17. I don’t know why people keep mindlessly diagnosing this girl with an eating disorder that she never had. If you have seen any of the indie films she was in when she was younger, she was a super scrawny kid. Notice that there is no “before” picture of her being heavier prior to this so-called eating disorder. She had a massive growth spurt between preteen and teen years that would never have happened if she was malnourished. Seriously, she is not the first human to be a skinny teen whose metabolism slows down when they get older.

      • V says:

She was definitely still slim in her early 20’s, it was after she ended up at the psych hospital back in 2009 that everything went downhill and she started looking not only bigger but not right, as in, bloated, face looked off, hair was a mess…

Medication can do this, alter hormones, make weight super difficult to shift etc.

I think that’s what happened with her, because most starlets (especially ones riding on their “high fashion” appeal) will just not let themselves get that big tbh and she doesn’t carry the weight well like a Beyonce or Jlo. Early twenties is your prime, it’s too early for your metabolism to become super sluggish.

Mischa was slim but had filled out already while on the OC (pear/hourglass type figure), it’s not like she looked prepubescent and exploded with all these curves/t&a afterwards.

The weight she gained looked unhealthy/partly water retention, not like her finally settling in to her true figure.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

She hasn’t lost her looks, she just isn’t a teenager anymore. I would think that after the Wentworth Miller post yesterday, people would be a bit nicer about what they post regarding people’s weight or looks in general. It’s well known that she had issues.

      • Lora says:

” I would think that after the Wentworth Miller post yesterday, people would be a bit nicer about what they post regarding people’s weight or looks in general. ”

Hahahahhaahhagahahahaha is this the first time you’ve been on this site?

      • Kitten says:

@Lora- This site is usually far kinder than others. I think Littlemissnaughty makes a great point.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

@ Lora: No, it’s not. Which was the reason for my post. Most people here aren’t as cruel as you make it sound and there are many many regular posters who don’t appreciate these comments. I don’t pretend to not sh*t on someone’s outfit once in a while, I’m no saint. But this girl has been through some stuff and people have been directing cruel comments at her body for a decade now. Enough is enough.

      • Grant says:

littlemissnaughty has apparently never sifted through the comments on a Jennifer Aniston post…

      • littlemissnaughty says:

@Grant: “She” hasn’t because JA is not that exciting to “her”.

      • Pandy says:

Agree. I think she looks lovely and healthy but she is not a dancer. She can BS excuses all she wants but ultimately, she gets voted off early.

      • Naya says:

Well, I said yesterday on the Wentoworth post that men get a far kinder gentler ride with regards to their body image struggles and their mental health. And now look, two posts today illustrating my point perfectly. Commenters here are not as “woke” as you claim. Cruelty directed at other women still gets a pass when it wouldnt were the subject a man.

    • Kimbers says:

She had a big drug and drinking problem ater she left the OC. Plusses said she suffered from eating disorders since she was younger and modeling. It took itso toll. Obviously she is insecure and does care, but the pressure and critism of the competition might be too much. It must be overwhelming. Jodie is also a recovering addict, but with probably a better support system and danced when she was little so knows the structure of how to learn knew routines.

    • Adrien says:

I think whe was badly affected by that cellulite pic. It was just one of those mean Daily Mail pap that we forget about the next day but her publicists decided to make a huge issue out of it, something like a Streisand effect and it became a topic of debate in showbiz and fitness world. She became worse after that.

    • Bridget says:

It’s the drugs and alcohol. She partied hard and it showed on her face long before she gained weight. I’ll never shade her for gaining weight (it’s a completely unrealistic expectation that women have the same body at 25 as they do when they’re 15) and prefer not to comment on her figure at all. But I’ll absolutely shade her for being an a-hole, which she’s always been. DWTS is honest work and an opportunity for her to get back out there with a smile on her face and a good attitude, and she still can’t even do it.

      • Kim says:

Drugs/alcohol most likely — Micha isn’t engaged, present; she’s dialing it in. Very sad to see.
As commented earlier: therapy Micha. Please girl.

      • Bridget says:

Her face started changing years ago, unfortunately. She was utterly gorgeous when she started out, but you could see it written across her face as she started parting harder and harder.

    • Dani says:

      She’s aging very badly.

  4. Mrs. Darcy says:

I mean…not everyone can be made into a dancer, just because someone is young and pretty doesn’t automatically mean they will have rhythm. Mischa did look ungainly and slow, I do think the pace of the song was too fast for the dance, but it seems like maybe she just couldn’t keep up and is blaming everyone but herself.

  5. cat says:

What is so shocking? She isn’t the first “star” to find out dancing is difficult. She probably won’t make it pass next cut, but at least she took the chance to compete.

    • cleveland girl says:

It is not her sub par dancing that people are criticizing…It is her whole bad attitude. If she didn’t want to do the show she should have declined.

  6. Sixer says:

On Strictly, our bad dancers just camp it out with gusto. Then the judges give them a slagging. Then the public votes them back the next week because the worse you are and the camper you are about it, the more we love you. Mischa should just do that. Would it work stateside? Do others with two left feet do that?

    • Lindy79 says:

Haha yeah and the judges get increasingly peeved at the bad ones being kept in week after week

    • KB says:

It would completely work, I think. I don’t actually watch the show, but people would like a lovable and charming klutz. I doubt they’d win, but I think they’d hang around until all the competitors were clearly in another league.

      • Sixer says:

That’s exactly how it works. The court jesters are kept in until all the average competitors are gone and only the contenders are left. But of course, one contender gets knocked out by a klutz and then there are endless column inches of outrage and the klutzes get knocked out after that!

    • Locke Lamora says:

That’s how it worked on our version of Dancing with the Stars. The horrible ones usually hung in until the semi-finals because the public loved them. One year the “klutz” made it into the final, and it was so funny to see a young dancer-singer type against a 6’7 aging water polo player.

  7. Senaber says:

Ugh I love DWTS but wouldn’t watch again until Geraldo was out because he grates on my nerves so bad. I didn’t peg Mischa to be the Kate Gosselin of this season. That’s really unfortunate given this was a good opportunity for a career reboot for her.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Ooh, come sit by me. Geraldo is the evil cat with nine lives. Why, why, why is he a thing and how has his career survived everything from gerbils to TELLING THE ENEMY WHERE ARE TROOPS WERE because “fog of war? He grates on every fiber of my last nerve.

      • Sixer says:

I have no idea who he is, but I clicked on the recent link here to an eye bleach picture of him. And now I KNOW there is no need for me to find out who he is!

      • JudyK says:

I am totally with you GNAT, plus I can’t stand to look at his ridiculous chicklet teeth and that absurd, stupid, hideous, outlandish, attention-seeking, gross, nasty, filthy mustache.

      • Christin says:

I lost two hours of my life in 1986 due to the highly hyped Capone vault mystery special.

      • OrigialTessa says:

His daughter was in Paris during the bombings, and you’d think he was promoting a summer blockbuster with how much press he was doing. Total douche.

      • Birdix says:

I had to boycott last season until that awful racist chef from the south was voted off, Paula whoever. Couldn’t believe they let her on.

  8. Jenna says:

She was always the odd one out with those trainwreck girls of 2006-2007. Britney and Lindsay had their impressive histories as pop star and movie actress to cling on to, there was still a lot of money to be made from Britney in particular, while Paris and Nicole both came from money and notoriety which kept them afloat long after their wild days ended.

Mischa couldn’t really act, she didn’t have a decent or independently wealthy support system, and she burned all her professional bridges at The O.C. and beyond. She tried a comeback on that CW model show but that bombed.

She doesn’t seem well either. She probably has anxiety and a lot of regret and bitterness at how things turned out. She was HUGE for a bit back in the day, like the Blake Lively of 2003/2004.

    • Naya says:

I missed that period, was she really Britney/Paris level of messed up? I thought her career just faded as it does for all those teen soap girls, Blake included.

      • Samtha says:

She had a complete breakdown, IIRC, and is also a recovering addict.

      • Merritt says:

Mischa had to be put on an involuntary psych hold in 2009. I think she she needs counseling, but is resistant to it.

      • Bridget says:

YES. Mischa hit the party scene HARD during her OC and post-OC days. And she was incredibly beautiful, but ruined her face with all the drugs. She could have carved out a nice niche for herself and worked consistently, but Mischa has always been such an a-hole that it didn’t work out.

      • holly hobby says:

I think she was dating Brandon Davis. He was a hard partier and his grandfather was this very wealthy man. I think the grandfather had a charity that Hollywood attended (the name escapes me). I remember the internet calling Brandon “Greasy Bear.” His bro wasn’t any better.

Yeah you can trace the slippery path from that relationship.

    • CoKatie says:

Yeah, this poor girl has always had more than an average persons share of problems. If I remember correctly, her Mom is meant to be a really awful person too. Ripping her off, total stage mom and not giving a crap about her daughter’s emotional problems. Just give me the money. There’s a younger sister who is not in much better shape. It’s actually very sad.

    • Bridget says:

Mischa was all-in with that crowd. She even dated Brandon Davis and Cisco Adler for goodness sake!

    • Boston Green Eyes says:

Wasn’t there a rumor that she was an escort for drugs (a la Lindsay Lohan) in Europe a while back?

    • perplexed says:

She was never really that likeable, even at the height of her fame. I think she got by on being considered so beautiful — but her personality was kind of …both conceited and bland? She’s definitely never seemed especially warm or charismatic, especially when she speaks. I guess I’m not that surprised she wouldn’t come off well on DWTS. Though if she had a crappy homager, that makes me feel bad for her, and probably explains how she came off.

    • amilu says:

She blew my mind as a child actor in the 1997 film Lawn Dogs. I had such high hopes for her — she was SO good in the movie. 🙁

  9. Azreen says:

DWTS is really competitive, demanding, and exhausting.
Mischa’s more known for her modelling and acting than her athleticism. Isn’t the whole point of DWTS just the exposure anyway? She may have a bad attitude about the show, but just being on the show keeps her relevant. After all her legal troubles, I say good on her for at least taking the chance to compete.

  10. LookyLoo says:

“Cardboard cutout” – Bwah ha ha ha! 😂 I needed the laugh this morning.

  11. Size Does Matter says:

On the next episode of Desperate for a Paycheck, Mischa discovers to her dismay that the Hokey Pokey is not in fact all about her.

  12. Renee says:

She’s probably embarrassed this is what her career has come to. Being on DWTS is bad enough but to do poorly has to be disheartening.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, I’m shocked to hear she’s on the show. I didn’t think she would deign to be on it. I know people can change, but she didn’t seem like the type to consider this show, and almost seemed like the type to be snooty about it.

    • lucy2 says:

I would think so. She probably could have had a decent enough career, but seemed to have many issues to deal with.
That said, it sounds like she isn’t putting forth much effort here. If she wants a comeback, she needs to fight for it, even if it’s on something as cheesy as this show.

  13. Crumpet says:

She looks healthier here than she has in a long time.

  14. Magnoliarose says:

Strange to see her again. She disappeared and was well forgotten but her pouty attitude maybe shows why she has no career.

  15. Ninks says:

She has a bad attitude and probably doesn’t care. But I feel sorry for her being with Artem. He used to be on strictly and he’s horrible, especially with partners who don’t have natural talent. This is just a bad partnership.

    • Birdix says:

I agree, he has no patience and doesn’t seem to inspire her at all. I wonder what the spin would be if she had been paired with Derek. Artem looks like a jockey, not sure why. it’s not the height, but every time I see him I flash to the Kentucky derby.

  16. Merritt says:

She just doesn’t feel like she should be doing the show. But she is in desperate need for money since she was sued by VW for not making payments on her car.

  17. Jenn4037 says:

I find the Judge’s kicking the dead horse into pulp. She is a recovering addict and was just there to have fun. This show is t “So You Think You Can Dance.” They don’t audition to be on. It is supposed to be fun. Awful Len has brought the meanness back. Bring back Julianne!

    • OrigialTessa says:

Just there to have fun? Not. She’s there because she’s being forced to by her agents to resurrect whatever scraps of a career she has left, and she’s failing, again.

      • Fanny says:

There to have fun – ha! There have been plenty of terrible dancers on DWTS who have endeared themselves to the judges and the audience by having a good attitude and working hard. Mischa is doing the exact opposite.

I don’t even think she’s essentially a bad dancer, she’s just not trying at all and clearly doesn’t want to be there. Some of the shit she was pulling in rehearsal was straight-up childish.

    • Merritt says:

Julianne is a terrible judge. I honestly think the judges would go easier on Mischa, if she was at least trying to do a good job. Artem’s last partner Patti LaBelle was not a great dancer, but she gave it her all and had a good time while she was on the show.

      • Birdix says:

I didn’t think she was terrible, but it was odd when she was judging her brother. And Len brings a better balance to the judging although he does seem a little too cranky for the beginning of the season.

    • Patty says:

It’s fun but it’s also a competition. It’s also been on there air for what seems like an eternity so Barton should have known what she was getting into it.

I agree that her problem is her bad attitude and the constant excuse making. I’m assuming her drug issues are behind her, so I find it baffling that she is supposed to get some sort of a pass or break because of it.

    • Bridget says:

      It’s a job.

  18. Mia4s says:

I don’t watch the show (or any reality TV) but I feel a bit badly for her because of the situation with her parents. She never had a chance.

Was that lawsuit against her mother ever resolved?

    • Lady D says:

TMZ reported about 2 weeks ago that she is suing her mother for snookering ownership of M’s house from her. This one is different from the money theft lawsuit, right?

  19. kri says:

I admit, I will watch anything that has dance in it. I actually watch while I’m on the treadmill-makes my hour go fast. I actually thought Mischa looked alot healthier, and I was hoping that after all the stuff she had gone through, she would do well on the show. But the problem is her attitude SUCKS. I mean, major suckage. You cannot learn and improve with the mindset she has. I would love to see her focus, because she could look great in dance. Lovely long limbs I would kill for. I dunno..maybe she will wake up and really work.

  20. Josefina says:

Celebrity dance shows are still a thing in the USA? Jealous. Ultimate guilty pleasure of mine.

  21. MoochieMom says:

My husband’s comment was (and he would know this from his much younger days), “She is so so so stoned,” during rehearsals.

  22. latetoparty says:

Did anyone see the recent blind about her being on drugs during th show?

  23. Dizzy says:

Been watching DWTS for years and I’ve never seen someone with such a bad attitude! If played well this show can really boost a career. Fake it till you make it!

    • Lady D says:

Did you miss Kate Gosselin? Miss, I don’t have to practice and you better make me the winner because I’m so super and a single mom, blah, blah, blah. Her attitude sucked large, and her paparazzi dance, oh my god she looked terrifying stomping down the dance floor.

  24. OhDear says:

Her attitude is not helping things. (Though I may be biased because I work with someone with the same exact attitude and it is irritating and frustrating as all hell.)

  25. Miss Ann Thropic says:

She just can’t dance. She can’t move, she’s got no rhythm and she looks like an uncoordinated cow out there. Plus her career is in the toilet, her store in the UK was a failure, she had to sell her family house at a discount and now she’s on DWTS to get a paycheck. And she can’t dance and she’s humiliated by the whole thing. Probably.

  26. Montréalaise says:

If DWTS is supposed to be her chance at a comeback, she is blowing it, big time. The show has had loads of untalented contestants over the years – not everyone has dance ability – but enthusiasm and a willingness to try your best go a long way towards winning over the audience. I haven’t seen anyone with this bad an attitude since Kate Gosselin.

I’m not a good dancer, so good dancers can maybe answer this question for me if they feel like it. Can anyone (provided they don’t have any physical barriers) learn to dance well with this intensive training, or can some people just improve but will never really dance well? Is it like drawing (technical, where anyone can become a fairly decent drawer) or painting (where you have to have artistic ability)?

I’m not a professional dancer (altho it was always my secret dream), but I am a professional musician with some dance/sports background. I think someone with no dance experience can get pretty good IF they have an instinctive musicality and good knowledge of their bodies and how to move them. Being able to find rhythm with your body and IN your body is the absolute key–if you have someone who has no rhythm, they’re doomed. Dance also takes an immense amount of fearlessness and lack of insecurity–the ones that are afraid of embarassing themselves will always be limited. I’m absolutely amazed by Nile–he is entirely deaf, has never heard music in his life, but because of his innate physicality he is an amazing dancer! He FEELS it. (He was always a really nice guy on ANTM.)

      • Fanny says:

Nyle and Peta are bugging me. First Peta said on twitter that Nyle is “the first deaf contestant” on DWTS and insisted that because Marlee Matlin has 20% hearing in one ear, she doesn’t count as deaf.

And then they both acted bratty about their scores last night. Nyle is good, but he seems to think he’s the best dancer and he’s pwning the competition and that’s not the case.

    • Birdix says:

It’s so interesting to watch for that reason–the way people move can seem so revealing of personality. Training and innate ability have a lot to do with it, but some people can learn easily and some just can’t, some people have a sense of flair that transcends how well they do the steps and some are so introverted that it’s hard to watch. Some really feel the joy and exhilaration of moving, and others are more robotic, just getting through the steps. And it’s not always who you’d expect–some of the professional athletes, who you’d think would have such an ability to control and move their body, just can’t dance. It’s also revealing (although this is obviously manipulated) how easily people are rattled by the stress of trying something new, how crushed they are by not learning quickly enough, and how easily they are hurt by criticism.

I watched this and saw ZERO hip movement. Can’t chachacha without hip movement.

  29. Cladia says:

Well … Misha dances better than me … much better 🙁

  30. JenniferJustice says:

For the past decade, she appears to me to be excruciatingly insecure. Often times, that level of insecurity, especially in the entertainment industry, manifests as a pseudo superiority complex. Confusing and backward, I know, but simply put her attitude is just a front, IMO. I’m willing to bet that behind closed doors, she is a hard on herself and unable to accept failure. She’s a sad case to me. I see it in her eyes.

  31. KiddVicious says:

I haven’t read all of the comments yet so this may have already been said, but Misha is such a horrible dancer that she didn’t even do a full dance the first night. It seemed it was only for 20 seconds. She has no rhythm, no sense of the music, no control over her body. I’ve seen this happen before but they still work hard and it will all suddenly “click” and they become decent dancers. I can’t see this happening to Misha. She’ll be next to go.

And I can’t stand Geraldo. I’m glad to hear he was the first to go.

    • Fanny says:

Honestly, I think all of Mischa’s deficiencies as a dancer can be chalked up to being really stoned, extremely under-rehearsed, and so insecure that she doesn’t want to actually try to be good or LOOK like she’s trying.

      • KiddVicious says:

That does make sense. I know I couldn’t learn anything if I were stoned while trying. I’d be in the corner drooling like an idiot. I also wonder how much of her awkwardness is because her dance partner is so much smaller than she is. Her posture looks like she’s trying to look smaller.

  32. Potato says:

She needs to succeed at this though, doesn’t she? Financial issues.

  33. Justine says:

Ladies and gentlemen, most of you putting this girl down are transparently jealous. Its bad vibes all over the place – not to mention boring af with your pseudo-deconstruction of this person whom you don’t know. She at one time was hotter than any of you have ever or will ever be. Next. And at 30, she certainly can’t complain. Next time, put the fangs away before you comment, a lot of you are making me ill with your sour, withered hearts.

    • Potato says:

“She at one time was hotter than any of you have ever or will ever be. ”

This automatically makes her better than all of us and above all criticism because certainly it must be inspired by jealousy. Thanks for the intelligent contribution!

    • guilty pleasures says:

Sanctimony is not why anyone is here. Ms Barton is entered into a competition, so she is de facto inviting judgement. She is performing with a disinterest and a sour attitude, for which she has become known. People are simply commenting that if you are seeking to revitalize a dead career you should at the very least put your best foot forward.
Why would we feel jealous of a person who is so patently unhappy, unfulfilled, financially unstable and average looking?
So, please feel free to take YOUR judgement to a place where it is either expected or appreciated, it is just silly here.

  34. Colleen says:

I know nothing about this woman, I’ve never seen her in anything, but her performance reminded me of Kate Gosselin’s performances when she did this show.

I imagine this is exactly how I would look doing these dances, stiff and uncomfortable.

  35. Alex says:

I’ve never watched this show but have seen clips from a few dances but it’s just so staged – as if they’re actively working against some contestants.

This song is clearly too fast for Mischa to dance to – she isn’t great on her feet but they really did her no favours – she could be much better than this. With a song slightly slower she’d hit more of the steps and be able to put a bit more personality into it. When you feel like you’re catching up the whole time, there’s no room for anything else.

Anyhoo I can’t bitch out on her for this performance or for being on the show or for not being enthusiastic. She’s had a rough life and has been majorly screwed over by her own mother and sent spinning into financial ruin. Add to that her addiction and potential mental health issues with the side effect of weight issues – lay off. She’s doing her best. She isn’t hurting you so just clap for her and close your mouth
