Lupita Nyong’o in custom J.Crew at ‘The Jungle Book’ premiere: lovely or meh?

Here are some photos from last night’s LA premiere of The Jungle Book. If you’re anything like me, you keep getting confused about the cast, and that’s because there were two versions of The Jungle Book being shot simultaneously. This one, with voice work from Lupita Nyong’o, Idris Elba, Ben Kingsley and Bill Murray, will be out in a few weeks. The second one is called Jungle Book: Origins and it has voice work by Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch and Cate Blanchett, and it won’t be out until next year. Last night’s premiere was for the Lupita version, and she was the one I want to discuss (mostly because Idris wasn’t there).

Lupita wore this custom-made ensemble to the premiere. It was made for her by… J.Crew! Which is crazy to me. The top is sort of cute and I originally thought Lupita was just wearing a dress made of this clingy chartreuse fabric, so imagine my surprise when I scrolled down. I like the idea of a fun, sparkly skirt, especially on Lupita, but I’m not sure about this whole look. I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s just… not as cute as she seems to think it is. The skirt is sort of bulky around the waist. Now, all that being said, she’s nearly perfect from the neck up. I consistently love that she tries bold makeup looks, and last night she did some light, glittery eye makeup. From a distance, it makes her eyes look sleepy and heavy, but in closeup, it’s striking.

A few more things. Lupita chatted with Entertainment Tonight about how much she’s always loved the story of The Jungle Bookgo here to read. She also pranked her Eclipsed costars for April Fool’s Day – you can see the video here. She had chocolate-covered onions made to look like truffles, and her costars actually tried them. Lupita is good at pranks, I guess. Also, this Instagram happened and yes, PEAK NERD. I actually squealed a little.

That’s the worst she’s ever looked.

    • Zimmerman says:

Want to like everything she wears (because I really like her), but I don’t and this time I really don’t!!!!

    • tegteg says:

It’s so bad. I also don’t like the makeup. 🙁 A rare fail for her.

    • V4Real says:

That outfit is horrible and she needs to lay off the eye shadow. Her brother is cute.

I’m looking forward to seeing the Jungle Book.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I like the top but that’s all.

  3. Locke Lamora says:

This entire ensamble is hideous. It looks like she tucked a t-shirt into a sparkly curtain. The hair is cute, but the makeup is horrible, the jewellery is horrible, everything is horrible.

Did she change stylists? Because the only time she looked good was during her first award season. After that she’s been dressing very badly. Such a shame because she is so stunning.

    • Beth says:

I couldn’t agree more. The first few times she was on this site, she looked fantastic, and I was so excited about a fashion girl. Then she just stopped making good choices. I can’t remember liking anything she’s worn in the past year.

Also, she needs to blend her freaking eyeshadow.

    • Kate says:

I only remember one great look, the red cape dress. Everything before and after was just not quite right. Something’s always a little off, the fit, the detailing, the styling…

  4. AlmondJoy says:

Hate the eyeshadow but the rest is cute. Love the picked out fro. Her brother is so adorable!

  5. Becks says:

She looks terrible. The styling and hair are not good, and that makeup is just NO!
    What was she thinking?

  6. EEV says:

I wouldn’t say I love it, but I dig it – and I love that she’s giving some representation for the smaller-chested ladies!

  7. Mia4s says:

I actually love the outfit but big NO on the eye makeup.

That Instagram made my week! That’s a lot of adorable for one picture.

  8. Notafan says:

Really don’t like the look. She is so much more beautiful than this.

And there’s an all-white Jungle Book and a diverse Jungle Book? I really hope the latter does well so Hollywood gets the idea that diversity is not unbankable.

    • Chinoiserie says:

I doupt voice actors being succesfull really changes anything.

I like her necklace but that’s its. Wierd choice for a outfit.

  9. felixswan2 says:

I clicked on the article right away because I’ve always loved J-Crew (been a fan since the Dawson Creek era), but this outfit is not good. Lupita is stunning, and this does not highlight that.

  10. Kate says:

I actually love it in motion. But the beading and sequins on the skirt are so awful up close.

  11. Dorothy#1 says:

Love it!! She looks fun and comfortable 🙂 Jealous of her hugging Mark Hamil. :/

    • Tulip Garden says:

I adore the photo with Mark Hamill! He looks so much healthier here then he did in Star Wars red carpets and, also, genuinely happy which is always a good look!
I like Lupita and, thus, am refraining about commenting on the first photo except to say that skirt is super shiny/happy and she seems to feel good in it.

  12. ladyE says:

    i like it. It’s fun for a kid’s movie.

  13. nina says:

It’s cute and fun and I love that she isn’t afraid to experiment with her looks.

  14. Josefina says:

I like the hair and that would be it.

  15. Dani says:

She needs to fire her makeup artist. WTF is with the bronze eye shadow. And it’s so messily applied. Ugh.

  16. vilebody says:

Wow those skirt slits come up really high. She’s one swish short from a wardrobe malfunction. Love her, but hate the look.

  17. Magnoliarose says:

Not her best but I adore Lupita so I give her a pass. She has an infectious personality and refreshing beauty.

  18. InvaderTak says:

When I thought it was a pleated floral skirt that was all one piece I loved it. But what it is is actually really bad.

  19. Ramona Q. says:

Pea soup green is not flattering on anyone.

  20. I Choose Me says:

I love that she experiments and mix it up but this is NOT a win. I don’t like the skirt at all but that chartreuse top is so nice. I love that colour.

Sigh. Wish I could be the recipient of a hug from Mark and Oscar.

  21. Carol says:

I like her outfit but don’t love it. The only thing I truly dislike is her eye shadow. But I do appreciate how adventurous she is with her outfits and makeup. She’s young, its the perfect time to experiment and see what works and what doesn’t

  22. Purple Ivy says:

Loved the video of her pranking her CoStar’s. Haha What a great prank for April Fools!

  23. Marianne says:

I like the outfit, but not so much the make-up. The orange eyeshadow is really heavy looking.

  24. Bread and Circuses says:

    I actually, I actually, I-I-I…LIKE THAT SKIRT.

At least when it’s in motion. That’s crazy, and it’s sort of cool for being so nutty.

I don’t like pink and red toned eyeshadows on anyone, but she does look striking in it.

  25. KiddVicious says:

I like the outfit. It does look a bit bulky around the waist but I’m wondering if it’s an odd photo angle. It’s a fun outfit and looks great on her. Her makeup is OK.
