Benedict Cumberbatch is already back at work on ‘Sherlock’ Season 4

Here are more photos of Benedict Cumberbatch filming Doctor Strange over the weekend. Some of these photos came in later than I was expecting, which is how I missed the Sophie Hunter photos! Sophie stopped by the New York set and she and Benedict didn’t have any issues with the paparazzi taking a hand-holding photos. Which is sort of fine with me – I actually like the fact that neither Sophie or Benedict gets all neurotic or twitchy about being photographed together. Their son was also in New York with them, and there were some photos of baby Christopher floating around.

As it turns out, the New York City street filming was the last part of Doctor Strange, an epic journey which took the cast from Nepal to England to… New York, I guess. I’m sure there were some other locations too. To celebrate Doctor Strange’s wrap, Benedict also visited a comic book shop and happily posed with Strange fans – go here to see.

I’m making such a big deal about the timing because… apparently Benedict has already flown back to England and the shoot for Sherlock Season 4 has already begun. Seriously! Steven Moffat made a statement: “Sherlock series four—here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street, and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and terror and tragedy are looming. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.” Mark Gatiss also posted this:

Which… sure. I’m excited that Gatiss, Moffat, Cumberbatch and Freeman are still committed to carving out time for Sherlock. I do want to know what happened after the stupid cliffhanger of Season 3 and the too-clever-by-half Christmas special. But it does seem like Bendy could probably use more of a break, especially considering he JUST wrapped on Strange. But I guess this is just what his schedule is like these days – he’s probably going to be working back-to-back for the next year, at least. After Sherlock, he’s got The Current War and that WWII movie too. And he has to do a Marvel press tour. And he has to promote The Hollow Crown. Poor Bendy.

    Loooooovveeeee hiiiiiimmm!!!!

  2. Tiffany says:

You know, they are both growing on me. For awhile there, it was a tad chilly.

    • hermia says:

You are right: before it was just chilly, now judging by the expression on his face, I’d say stone cold verging on Barts-ready.

  3. InvaderTak says:

I just realized I either don’t remember or still haven’t seen the Christmas special. Huh.
Edit: Oh yeah. After a quick look at YT I remember it was bollocks (IMO)

    • jammypants says:

I was really enjoying it…until the second half. Awful!

      • InvaderTak says:

They really overdid the mind palace bit. The phrase itself irrationally irritates me too. The second half was just turn it off bad.

  4. Insomniac says:

Wow. I never believed Season 4 would ever happen given how busy the two stars are nowadays. But I can’t wait!

    • Green Girl says:

I am still SO MAD about the Christmas special, and season three left me feeling cold. I will likely see the fourth season when it’s released, but I have my reservations.

I’m also surprised it’s happening. For a while, it felt like it maybe wouldn’t happen at all, or at least not for a few years. It’s great that everyone wants to make time to come back, which is saying something – they don’t *need* to do it, they just want to.

And in response to Lindy’s comment below: I agree. I think he’s the sort of person who feels he has to keep working.

      • Lindy79 says:

Yep, and I don’t mean it as a criticism. He’s spoken a few times about his parents being jobbing actors and work drying up etc. Even in his down times, he’s still travelled and done promo work to keep his profile up.

  5. Lindy79 says:

Poor Bendy nothing, I’d bet anything he likes it this way.

  6. SHCircus says:

Did anyone see the crazy Sophie-fansite commenting on IMDB and DM? I wonder if there are actually peeps out there who’d be genuine fans of her – you know with her non mainstream, blink and you miss it art…

    • Dara says:

Of COURSE they are tried and true fans, and anyone who suggests otherwise is just a bitter old crone who wished they had half her beauty and talent. These fans have been carrying the Sophie banner since the very beginning of her career at mime school, don’t you know. It’s only a coincidence that they became more vocal AFTER it was announced the glorious theatre director Sophie had decided to enter into holy matrimony with some obscure British actor with a funny name.

      • SHCircus says:

Misogynist, don’t forget misogynist. And if you comment on SH less favorably you are a stalker while her “fan” post about ALL of her buddies and have whole archives of old social media photos that they got hold of God only knows how 😉

      • Dara says:

:: rolls eyes :: How could I forget that particular chestnut? It might just be my favorite of all the rants. My personal take on the Sophie Hunter fan sites? It’s either a Cumby fan who thinks fawning over his beloved will earn them his eternal affection and gratitude, or it’s someone with a vested interest (who may or may not be on the payroll) in making fetch happen for the newly minted Mrs. Cumberbatch.

      • SHCircus says:

Doubt it’s a Cumby fan because this SH-fan photoshops her into focus by blurring his face out and coloring him grey. Also that old explanation *oh no no no. SHC is just a crazy obsessive from ages ago* seems like a lame excuse because with this many profiles everywhere always pushing SH hard it all seems fishy. And then they have pics and info no one else has.

  7. PunkyMomma says:

    I’m ready for some Sherlock.

  8. NL says:

All else is a distraction. #Sherlock

  9. SloaneY says:

He looks like he would literally rather be anywhere else than holding her hand, and she just looks pleased as punch to be getting her picture taken. Lol!
So much entertainment value, I have to give them that.

    • April says:

I hope it’s ok for me to mention that he looks as if he is facing his own execution in the pics where he is looking down.

    • Boston Green Eyes says:

I would really like to see the true dynamic of their relationship. He always looks so peevish in photos with SH but maybe in reality he dotes on her? TBH, tho, I think Lord Cumby only dotes on Lord Cumby.

  10. JenB says:

Wow at first glance I thought I was looking at Ethan Hawke in one of those pictures! Never noticed that resemblance before!

  11. Joanie says:

His visit into the comic book store while in full costume was very cute.

  12. Lucy says:

The photo assumption about Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter never fails to make me cackle. I’m imagining people assuming the state of my marriage based on me, I don’t know, checking my phone instead of engaging in intense conversation or smiling adoringly at my husband in public at all times. It’s absurd. But hilarious, so please continue.

    • Libba says:

Well, you know what else to expect on a gossip sites where one gets to see mostly pics of couples. I mean people comment on other celebs too. But with Benedict I don’t know. See he has this dead eyes stare or pursed lips thing going on most of pap pics I’ve seen from last week (there were other run-ins with the paps you know). And she always smiles at the paps. You’d think as a couple they’d look equally annoyed. She comes off famewhorish.

      • Lucy says:

Trust me, I’m not above gossip, hah. I just literally have never understood the things people read into this particular relationship based on pictures of them. I have no idea what their marriage is like, but almost every photo I’ve seen is pretty innocuous and bland. They seem like a regular late 30s, reserved, posh couple, one of whom happens to be very famous.

      • Libba says:

Well I guess everyone projects different ideas into images and story. But you are right SH comes off as bland. She hasn’t got a stunning personality which is why her neck craning and odd smiles are misinterpreted. Maybe she lives in her own world who knows. He has been papped in previous years and looked less deathly but then fame hadn’t worn him out yet perhaps?

  13. nlikey says:

Let’s face it, Sophie has a lot to do with the public turning against him. Since she’s appeared, nothing more is enjoyable about him. It’s just as if he has to put a lot of effort to appear at least moderately nice. You have always the feeling he’s only pretending to be the guy he used to be, and for the rest he’d rather send you f… off.

    • Andrea says:

I’ve noticed that he’s gotten cranky with giving interviews. All seems pre approved and nothing spontaneous as if he dreads getting caught off guard on questions about his private life. Why? He used to give anecdotes about his family, friends and girlfriends, but now? People used to be taken by his charm and charisma. Is he maybe embarrassed by her lack of charisma?

      • nlikey says:

I don’t know. But before you could see he was enjoying himself surrounded by people. And now he still can pull off some enthusiasm, but you can be sure that he goes ‘f… the florals’ the very moment he’s out of the picture.

      • Andrea says:

I think what can also be noticed is (regardless of their state of their marriage because HOW would an outsider know, right?) that the public is not really that impressed by Sophie. People either don’t care and see no charm or passion here and are turned off by lifeless Cumberbatch, or if they follow the story closer they don’t really like her. It has to do with her being numb, bland and smug. She gets out shined so easily, doesn’t she? And posing next to him at she always seems like an asset. Plus the few times she got some articles, it was quite disillusioning how she credits other people’s work for herself.

  14. Boston Green Eyes says:

Wow. A Lord Cumby thread with only 20-something replies. How far the mighty have fallen on CB!

    • platospopcorn says:

I was just scrolling down to post “Look at all the enthusiasm!!!! Look at all the excitement!!!!”

Textbook story of how to squander all the good will for an actor and the iconic role that made him famous.

    • NUTBALLS says:

I totally forgot seeing this post this morning. I’m comment #34. Can’t hardly believe this is the same dude that inspired nearly 1,000 comments back during the Shotgun-Engagement-Marriage-Oscar-Campaign-Coupling. I guess he’s boring now that he’s all domesticated?

I’m looking forward to Dr Strange. Sherlock, not so much. It’s gone down the tubes since Season 2.

  15. browniecakes says:

Lainey is right, he was born to be Dr. Strange, looks just like the comic character. Sherlock 4 – yes!
