Black Keys disappointed after Steve Miller’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame rant

By now, you’ve probably heard about Steve Miller’s rant against the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If you haven’t, here are the details in a nutshell. Steve was inducted into the Hall for his body of work including hits like “Fly Like An Eagle,” “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run” – and a ton more.

At the induction ceremony last Friday night, Steve was introduced by the Black Keys, represented by lead singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Pat Carney. After playing a medley of his hits, Steve started his descent into full “grumpy cat” mode. During his acceptance speech, he called the event a “lazy night” attended by “a bunch of fat cats.” He then let the Hall have it backstage, noting that his band mates had to pay their way into the ceremony – and tickets were running as much as $10,000 a head. Over the attempts of a publicist to shut Steve up, he complained that the artists were treated poorly and added, “The whole process is unpleasant.”

He then went on an obscenity packed rant about the entire music industry during an interview with Rolling Stone on Monday. He said he only showed up for his fans and called the event an “amateur production.” He saved the best for last though:

This whole industry f—ing sucks and this little get-together you guys have here is like a private boys’ club and it’s a bunch of jackasses and jerks and f—ing gangsters and crooks who’ve f—ing stolen everything from a f—ing artist. Telling the artist to come out here and tap dance.

Gee, I hope he doesn’t kiss his mother with that mouth. Well, yesterday the Black Keys entered the fray, talking to Rolling Stone about their own unpleasant dealings with Mr. Miller. Dan Auerbach told the magazine he was “disappointed” about his experience, which started with Steve having no idea who the Black Keys were and saying upon meeting them, “I can’t wait to get out of here.” Auerbach had lots more to say about the evening:

Looking back on the experience: It was just a real eye-opener for us. Because as we get older, I hope that when I’m in my twilight years, I can look back and be grateful to the people who have appreciated me and to be able to give back. Because music is about sharing and passing on inspiration and that was his opportunity to do that; not just lashing out in a way that was just completely unfocused.

He regrets participating in the ceremony: It’s unfortunate. Of course there are problems in the music industry. Of course. But we were there, unpaid, on our own free will, to come celebrate his achievements and spread the joy of rock & roll. To inspire kids to pick up guitars. To play music. And it felt like we were doing the opposite.

On his experience with the Hall: It’s always so easy for a f–king artist to rag on a big institution. It really is. And a lot of times you have to do that and it’s necessary. But me personally, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has only ever really brought me joy since I was a teenager! I used to go there with my dad [when] they would do workshops. They’re responsible for a lot of really positive things in my life. So when they asked us to do this, as much as I wanted to do it for Steve Miller, I wanted to do it for the Rock Hall. Because it has been a form of inspiration for me.

[From Rolling Stone]

As a passionate music fan, I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a complete joke, mainly because my idol since childhood, Peter Frampton, isn’t in it – but look at all of the other bands who still aren’t in it either. I think Steve should have saved his comments for another time and served as an inspiration to the musicians coming up after him, like the Black Keys. It did stink that Steve’s band mates had to pony up the cash to attend the ceremony, but would it have hurt him to cover their admission himself? I think he’s got that kind of cash. Could this negative press mean an end to these induction ceremonies?

I have always loved Dan Auerbach because of his passion for music. I love him even more now.

  2. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Didn’t he also bash the Hall of Fame for not being more inclusive to women and minorities?

On the one hand I’m sorry the fancy party they envisioned wasn’t more awesome but I always tend to favor the side discussing important issues even if it’s not pleasant and fun for everyone.

    • Scotchy says:

He did take them to task for not being more inclusive to minorities and women. As someone in the industry he is right, it is disgusting and a joke. Particularly for women and minorities. Combine the two and you have a lot of walls you have to break….
I am glad he took them to town, and as for the Black Keys, ugh, I just can’t….

      Hear, hear!

All of these award ceremonies are ridiculous, really. It’s so stupid to make creativity a contest. Not to mention that so many awards shows are a sick display of excess in a world full of poverty. The disconnect between the two is utterly appalling.

    • tealily says:

As has been pointed out elsewhere, the Hall of Fame is more inclusive that Miller’s band.

  3. meme says:

I don’t understand what’s so great about Steve Miller that he’s even in the Hall of Fame.

    • SusanneToo says:

Ditto. I always switched stations when his crappy music came on. Congrats to Auerbach for his classy statement.

    • Esmom says:

My 15 year old musician son and his bandmates have him on their playlists. They love a mix of old and newer musicians. I always turn his songs up when I hear them, they take me back to a simpler time.

    • JustJen says:

Me neither. Way to bite the hand that feeds you.

    • Sadezilla says:

Agree! Steve Miller makes me change the station!

    • Stacy Dresden says:

What do you mean? With lyrics like this:
Aa-aa-bracadabra I wanna reach out and grab ya…abracadabra…
I feel the magic in your caress
I feel magic when I touch your dress
Silk and satin, leather and lace
Black panties with an angel’s face

      Derp! Just kidding

  4. OTHER RENEE says:

If the band was performing with him, they shouldn’t have had to pay anything. Still, he could have paid their way and kept his mouth shut. I had to be in Cleveland last year and right off the plane I headed for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it was absolutely amazing.

  5. dawn says:

I think his rant was right on and made more sense than some people who get attention for their totally wrong rants. But that’s just me.

  6. Mia4s says:

The Hall IS basically a joke; but his rant would have had more impact had he refused the induction and not shown up. Showing up and then ranting crosses the line from legit beef to just rude.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, that was kind of a mixed message, wasn’t it? Sounds like he was trying to do the right thing (“for the fans”) but then couldn’t refrain from complaining.

I’m not sure about the shade the Black Keys threw on him either, I think I would have just kept my mouth shut. I guess they probably felt caught in the middle.

    • tealily says:

Exactly. If he’s that against it, why accept the nomination?

  7. peanut says:

“”it’s a bunch of jackasses and jerks and f—ing gangsters and crooks “””
    YASSS. ^^^ ALL of this.

I’m only 29 and I’d attend a SMB concert over any rag tag artist out there now a days. Good for him. I have no objection to him speaking his mind.

  8. Beatrice says:

Lots of musicians and groups have always ragged on the music industry as a bunch of “suits” that exploit them. They even write songs about it–Pink Floyd’s “Welcome to the Machine”and Joanie Mitchell’s “Free Man in Paris” come to mind–there are others out there.

  9. Frosty says:

I love this kind of thing. Miller had the opportunity to publicly lambast the business and he went hard. LOVE IT. Auerbach comes off a bit teacher’s pet here. No wonder Jack White couldn’t stand him.

  10. gwen says:

Bitter, party for one….why did he bother to show up if he’s so disgusted by the whole process?

  11. Carol says:

That kind of sucks that Steve Miller’s band mates had to pay for their own tickets. That’s quite absurd actually. What if they aren’t rich? $10,000 is a lot jeez. So good for Steve Miller for ranting about that.

  12. Stella in NH says:

The whole rock and roll hall of fame is nothing but a joke. Alice Cooper just got in last year and some of his stuff was inducted years earlier. I will never go there.

  13. Tough Cookie says:

    Team Steve

  14. Dizzybenny says:

    I’m with team Steve!!
10 000$ a head for the band mates, even if your rich it’s ridiculous.
Sounds like Olympic committee type money if you ask me.
They (Black Keys) feel bad because he don’t know them?!? Bitch please he doesn’t have too.
I barely know of them much less know a song of there’s.
When I listened to the radio and hear there coming up next I get them mixed up with the Black eye peas for some reason.

  15. Bread and Circuses says:

Okay, rude as it was, I think Steve Miller was kind of awesome and definitely “Rock and Roll”! Yeeeah, stick it to da man! 😀
