‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 premiere: ‘The Red Woman’

GOT1

SPOILERS for Game of Thrones Season 6 premiere episode “The Red Woman.”

I was promised Hodor and no Hodor came. It’s so depressing. It’s been nearly two years without any Hodor. It’s been nearly two years without Bran Stark. I guess we’ll get to see Bran in Episode 2, but still… this premiere could have done with one small dose of HODOR. And are we ever going to see Rickon again? What about Gendry? Gendry was one of my favorite people and he’s been in the wind for years. Anyway, Game of Thrones Season 6 premiered last night and… it was good. We were playing catchup on a lot of these characters, but some of the plots moved along and I have high hopes for this season. Here are some highlights.

The Dornish plot. I understand that book-readers loved a lot of the Dornish stuff and hated how it played out on the show. I can understand that, because last season the Dornish stuff didn’t make much sense. Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes just seemed impulsive and short-sighted, and it wouldn’t have taken a genius to figure out that the sh-t was going to hit the fan when Prince Dornan (the ruler of Dorne) found out that Ellaria and the Sand Snakes killed Marcella Lannister. But as it turned out, Ellaria had a plan. And it involved murdering Prince Dornan, his most trusted guard and the crown prince (Marcella’s fiancé Trystane). Ellaria is all, “You’re weak, you don’t do anything, we’re going to war.”

Jamie Lannister & Cersei. I stopped giving a crap about Cersei a few seasons ago. I like Lena Headey and everything but I just CAN’T with Cersei. I hate-watch her scenes. So I didn’t even feel sorry for her that Marcella died. I didn’t even care that Jamie gave some sort of rousing speech about how they’re the only people that mattered. Boring.

Margaery Tyrell. Queen Margaery is still in prison for… what’s the charge again? It’s basically like she’s being punished because she didn’t care that her brother is gay.

Daenerys & Khal Moro.
Was it just me or was this one of the funniest scenes in the history of Game of Thrones? I know we’re supposed to be worried about Dany’s safety, but the writers deserved a slow clap for how Dany & Khal Moro’s first meet-cute happened. She’s all “I’m the Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, etc, you get it,” and he’s all, “Girl, you’re the queen of jack sh-t.” And when she dropped Khal Drogo’s name, then Khal Moro is all, “Oh, I feel you, but why aren’t you at The Old Khaleesi Home for Retired Vajajays? No worries, I’ll take you there.” I also loved that when you got to see Khal Moro’s power structure, it involved sh-t talking dudes creating “top five” lists and bitchy mean-girl wives threatening to cut off Dany’s head. I’m just saying… it was great writing.

Tyrion & Varys. While I love Tyrion and Varys, I would have loved to have seen Grey Worm & Missandei during this little outing in Meereen. I like the language confusion of Tyrion trying to give the peasant woman money… to eat her baby. The point of showing Tyrion and Varys in Meereen together is to show that they’re very capable together, even when Meereen is descending into civil war.

Arya Stark. She’s still blind. And someone (Jaqen H’ghar?) is still overseeing her education as a fighter and assassin. Someone sent that other girl (the Waif) to beat the hell out of Arya, you know?

Sansa Stark and Reek. Or should I go back to calling him Theon now? What’s great about Alfie Allen in this role is that he actually is one of the best actors on the show, and he seems/looks/acts/speaks differently when he’s Theon versus when he’s Reek. I say he’s Theon now. He was Theon the minute he decided to save Sansa. He was Theon when he decided to protect her, whatever the cost. This ended up being a great payoff for the die-hard GoT fans and for those of us tired of Sansa being the one in the worst situation. Finally, Brienne came to her rescue. Finally, Sansa accepted help from the right people. Finally, Sansa is going to be safe… for a little bit. Also: Podrick! Pod isn’t completely terrible in a fight! But I like that Theon saved Pod. I also like that Sansa looked at Theon when Brienne offered her protection.

Ramsey & the Boltons. My God, Ramsey is so creepy. To go from mourning Myranda (killed by Theon last season) to telling that guy to feed her to the dogs? And then Bolton Senior is all, “You were a total psycho to Sansa and that’s why she left, right? Well, I’m glad my new wife is carrying a son!” Ramsey is (hopefully) about to kill all of his Bolton kin at Winterfell.

Jon Snow, Davos & Ghost. Jon Snow is dead, dead, dead. For now. I almost cried when Ghost was howling at the beginning and then I really did cry when Ghost was sniffing Jon’s body. I like that Jon’s Night Watch friends allied with Davos quickly, and Melisandre coming in and touching the body, saying: “I saw him in the flames, fighting at Winterfell” almost gutted me. But Davos has a plan. And it involves the Wildlings possibly launching an assault on Castle Black. This might get good. Ghost needs to sit on the Iron Throne!

The Red Woman. I’m not sure if I read this online or if it was already established within the show, but I’m pretty sure most of us knew that Melisandre was really old? Like, she’s been alive for hundreds of years. Her sorcery and magic keeps her ageless (if “ageless” means “somewhat Botoxed”), plus we found out last night that her crazy choker necklace helps camouflage her age. You too can take hundreds of years off your appearance if only you invest in a red amulet choker necklace! We’re supposed to believe that Melisandre is having a terrible crisis of faith. But I’d be willing to bet that Davos will be able to convince her to wear the necklace again. Also: Carice Van Houten chatted with People Magazine about making that last scene – go here to read.

Here’s the teaser for Episode 6.2.

  1. Nancy says:

Wow. Didn’t see that one coming……

  2. mytake says:

The Monty Python-esque skit was seriously funny!

Ive got an off-the-wall prediction: Gendry somehow hooked up with someone traveling east and somehow got involved with the Sons of the Harpy.

    • Lurker says:

Where is Gendry?? Is it too much to ask for for shirtless Gendry, workin’ in his forge, being all gorgeous? Why can’t I have nice things???

      • Chaucer says:

I’m thinking Gendry is going to pop up with Littlefinger. In one of the trailers, Littlefinger turns around and I have a feeling Gendry is the silhouette out of focus.

    • Jean Grey says:

I kinda always shipped Gendry and Arya together. She, as a faceless assassin and he has a SotH would make one kick ass couple!

      • kori says:

I did too–in a future sense as she was so young. I’d love to see him reappear.

      • chick b says:

Yes. Gendrya must happen. Or he could just walk thru a scene shirtless as Lurker mentioned. That would be fine.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

I love all of the Gendry love here! I’ve liked the actor ever since he was in Skins. I hope he returns too.

      • mary s says:

Gendry and Arya! I’ve always thought they’d be good together. I like blind Arya, it was neat how they “showed” her increased awareness of sound. The only thing I don’t like about her is she’s so whiny lately, always complaining about how long she been sweeping, cleaning dead bodies, blah blah blah. I hope she toughens up.

  3. Fee says:

Oh my, it was great n it left me wanting soooo much more. Bring Jon Snow Back asap!!!!

    • isabelle says:

Think he will be brought back in ep. 3 or 4. When they burn his body, think that dragon bast*rd will rise like Dany from the fire. OK it is what I’m hoping…or the Red Priest (the guy that raised the dead guy after the Hound killed him) will raise him from the dead.

  4. AnnieRUOk says:

Sansa’s plot is the most exciting for me right now. But I’m really hopeful that Job Snow will be revived by the Lord Of Light. Fire and ice!!!

  5. Betti says:

Am taking bets in the office that Sansa and Theon either end up together or get it on.

    • Jean Grey says:

But he’s like her older brother? And he has no wee wee.

    • HappyMom says:

He’s her half brother, plus the whole no penis thing.

      • lilacflowers says:

No, not her half-brother. Jon’s her half-brother or so she believes. Theon is not related at all. He was Ned’s ward; basically a hostage to keep his father Balon true to his word after Ned stopped his uprising against Robert. But Ned raised Theon with his own kids.

      • Ditto says:

No they’re not related, he was sent as a ward to the Starks after the Iron Islands failed to invade. They grew up like siblings but aren’t related.

      • mayamae says:

It may be confusing because Sansa yelled at Theon about “killing” Bran and Rickon who were his “brothers” – her words.

    • msd says:

In the books, if I remember rightly, Theon actually thinks about marrying Sansa, not because he has a big crush on her but because he so desperately wants to be a Stark. Alfie Allen is fantastic and Theon has turned into one of the most interesting characters on the show.

  6. Louise177 says:

I felt so bad for Ghost too. Glad I’m not the only one. I like that Brienne and Podrick saved Sansa. Overall I wish a little more happened. A lot yet so little happened this episode.

    • Lurker says:

speaking of direwolves, where the f is Nymeria?

Where is Gendry and where is Nymeria? Couldn’t give a fecking about stupid Dany, stupid Jon Snow, stupid everyone, I just want Gendry and also Nymeria.

      Also bring back Robb Stark.

      • lilacflowers says:

I need Nymeria. We haven’t seen her since Season Two. Not a mention of that wild, free assassin tearing up the Riverlands.

      • Size Does Matter says:

I was kind of hoping Nymeria would show up to save Sansa and Theon.

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

I don’t read the books but my husband does and Nymeria is sort of on the outskirts, running around in the woods, there is mention of her so hopefully they will bring her back at some point. I thought i was the only one who cared as much (sometimes more!) about the wolves as the humans!

    • Rachel says:

I was yelling at Ser Davos to go let Ghost out! Go let him out! Then he did tell Dolores Edd to go get Ghost and Melissandre shows up, and I’m GO GET GHOST! I was so afraid they’d have a Red Wedding repeat and shoot Ghost while he was confined. After reading some theories on here, I’m still scared for Ghost.

      • drnotknowitall says:

Don’t worry. I am one of the book readers and there is no way Ghost or Jon are dead or going to be dead (until old age). If that happens, the entire fandom will set the books on fire. We have all agreed that L + R = J. He can’t die or the entire Song makes no sense.

      • Liv says:

I had a horrible idea while watching the episode. Melisandre obviously doesn’t resurrect him right away, so maybe a Beric Dondarrion-resurrection is not possible anymore. What if she kills Ghost to “heal” Jon? :-O

    • Becks says:

I also cried during that scene. Ghost howling and crying broke my heart. I have a dog, so I know the bond between a human and their pet is strong 😢 Poor Ghost misses his dad. And yes, he should be on the Iron Throne!
What a great episode! I enjoyed every minute of it!

    • hogtowngooner says:

Yes! I actually cheered when Brienne and Pod rode in to save Sansa and Theon!

Ramsay saying a mournful goodbye to Miranda and then in the next breath telling them to cut her up and feed her to the animals was so chilling.

      • kcarp says:

I so want Sansa to start taking charge of her life. I know she has had some bad circumstances but I want her to take charge and be a bad a**.

  7. Jean Grey says:

The show was too short! I wanted more! I waited almost a year for it lol. Anyway, I think Melissandra saying she saw Jon fighting at Winterfell is obviously foreshadowing, don’t ya think? Ghost’s howls made me want to cry too. Oh and when Brienne bent the knee and swore to protecting to Sansa using Oathkeeper, which is really Ned’s greatsword, Ice, melted down and ‘re-forged, I started choking up as well. And we’ll see Bran next week. Too much to cover in only an hour. HODOR!

    • Jenns says:

It was too short. I’m ruined by binge watching because I want the next episode NOW.

And why was there a 10 minute recap?!?

      • Diana B says:

My thoughts exactly! Why so much time wasted in recaping? Those precious minutes…

      • Rachel says:

7 minutes. 7 minutes, then that ridiculously long intro, AND the show ended at 9:54. That’s less than 45 minutes of actual substance. I say it every single time… NOT COOL HBO. We’ve been waiting a damn year! You did a season 5 marathon. Spare us the recap! We all know what’s going on!

They’re getting lazy. And I do not appreciate it.

      • kori says:

They should’ve done a 30 min recap (because it’s convoluted and a lot of time has passed) but either right before the premiere or the week before. It would’ve played right into the excitement of the show returning but without taking up precious time during the actual episode.

    • HappyMom says:

I assumed the first show would be 2 hours-I was so disappointed!

    • Magnoliarose says:

Yes it was too short. I am dying for more.

  8. lilacflowers says:

    No HODOR!
    No DROGON!
    No WUNWUN!
    CROQUEMBOUCHE!!!

    Brienne!
    Pod!
    Davos!
    Dolorous Edd!
    Ghost!

  9. Abbott says:

Something happened in Dorne!!!! Question: will the people of Dorne back Ellaria? Seems like a risky move.

    • booboocita says:

Well, it looks like the Dornish army will back Ellaria, as evidenced by the fact that none of the king’s guards came to Doran’s rescue when Ellaria and her daughter killed him and Areo Hotah (I think that’s his name). And in that universe, having an army at your back appears to matter more than the love of the people.

      • Rachel says:

She was smart. No one could defeat Hotah in a fair fight, so they stabbed him in the back. So sad.

      • Lilix40 says:

Oh, I only saw your comment after posting. Good point. Ugh, I liked Doran and Trystan and that kickass guard.

    • Lilix40 says:

Hm, I do not know much about GoT’s books, but isn’t Doran sort of respected in Dorne? Seems like a gross miscalculation on Ellaria’s part for me. I suppose she is like Cersei on that matter: short sighted, feeding a monster that will come back to bite her.

      • lilacflowers says:

In the books, yes, because he kept them out of the wars, despite the Sand Snakes really wanting wars. And the whole time, he was plotting an alliance with the Targaryens. Tristane was not his heir in the books; he was the youngest and he was engaged to Myrcella. He had other older kids. Arianne was the heir to Dorne and he planned to marry her to Viserys and his older son Quentyne to Danys. But he kept just about everyone, including Arianne, in the dark about what he was doing. He did tell Quentyne and sent him to Dany. Quentyne released Viserion and Rhaegal and died doing so.

      • Whatwhatnot says:

Looks like Tyrion will be releasing V&R in next week’s episode! Imagine he doesn’t burn and the theories are true?

      • msd says:

Yes and no. Doran kept the peace but there’s actually plenty in the books about people becoming frustrated with him for not doing anything, especially after Oberyn was killed. Areo Hotah notes that half the Dornish lords want to go to war. I have a feeling the show has just done a massive fast forward of the book’s Dorne plot (kind of necessary when they decided to skip the whole fAegon nonsense). They’re either going to unite with someone else against the Lannisters (join up with the Tyrells?) or go it alone, or support Dany if she ever gets to Westeros. I can’t see it ending well for the Martells either way.

      • lilacflowers says:

@msd, the Martells and Tyrells traditionally hate one another.

      • msd says:

@lilacflowers Yeah but they both hate the Lannisters even more.

(Actually, I mentioned the Tyrells because Lady Olenna was seen on the Dorne set in Spain last year.)

  10. mom2two says:

I thought it was a not bad but not great premiere, honestly.
What was the point of Dorne? What a waste of Alexander Siddig.
Jorah should have his own CSI show, with the ability to find small things in the grasslands.
I am pretty positive Drogon will save Dany and ensure the Dothraki give her their loyalty.
Gee, I wonder who is going to replace all of Dany’s burnt boats?
I think the most affecting scene was Brienne pledging her sword to Sansa. Good thing Sansa knows nothing about Brienne waiting for her candle and then once it came deciding to go off and kill Stannis.
Lena Headley is probably the best actor on this show. I think she’s been better than Dinklage the past couple of seasons. I am curious where the show goes with Melisandre, that was an interesting reveal about her.

    • Abbott says:

Wait. Who is going to replace Dany’s boats?

I also loved the scene with Brienne. That foursome will be fun to watch.

    • lilacflowers says:

And I agree: a colossal waste of Alexander Siddig. What did he get; 3-4 small scenes total?

      • Eve says:

Indeed. Sidding was so underused it made me grind my teeth. I was like “what, that’s it?” .

And Ellaria may have reasons to loathe the Lannisters , almost everybody does, but she can’t claim revenge and, even worse, killing an innocent girl to get that (at least for now — I’m expecting a full bitch-off between them at some point).

Oberyn AGREED to the combat and even used poisoned spears — which I don’t know if the CBCW ( the Committee for Barbaric Combats of Westeros) allows or if they let everybody go “full Lance Armstrong”.

    • isabelle says:

Hate the Dorne story line. Hate the Sand Snakes with all of the GOT passion in my heart. They’re silly, too much like bratty kids and the storyline is yawn worthy.

      • Janet R says:

Yep. I feel the same way about the books – just plow through any mention of them. More Arya, More direwolves; More Tyrion, more Bran – Hordor!

    • mary s says:

Brienne never saw the candle. The Sand Snakes bug me to no end. I thought I’d love the tough girls kicking butt, but they’re just not cool. They’re cowards, stabbing people through the backs and using poison. Gives girl power a bad rap. Sansa needs to girl up and kick all their butts.

  11. Jenns says:

    So.Many.Thoughts.

F**k Olly and his stupid smug face.

Melisandre said she Jon Snow fighting a battle in Winterfell. Good moment of foreshadowing there since we know an epic battle is coming at Winterfell later in the season.

Roose’s voice sounded very delicious last night. Too bad his and Walda’s days are numbered because I believe Ramsey is going to kill them.

Sansa/Theon/Brienne/Pod need to form together and start a band. But seriously, I loved every moment of them together. I’m even warming up to Theon.

Who was spying on Tyrion & Varys? And the “She thinks you want to eat her baby” was funny.

    Something interesting happened in Dorne!

While the Dany scene was funny, I found it to be the least interesting part last night.

Davos is everything. His calm “Thanks, we’ll think over you offer” was the best.

And finally, I’m going to need one of those necklaces Melisandre is wearing, cause I’m not getting any younger. And I wonder if she does bring back Jon, if that will end up killing her. I remember when Stannis wanted to have another smoke baby and she said he was too weak to go through it again. But maybe she meant that *she* was too weak because of her age.

    • Nancy says:

Jenns: Lol….Melisandre looked like me the morning after! It was a shocker, I was thinking she would bring Jon back in the last scene, them wham…..good episode.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

@Jenns- that type of covert peering is in LittleFinger’s wheelhouse…

    • Rachel says:

Ditto on Olly. But you know when Jon is resurrected (into whoever), he will spare Olly.

If anything happens to Davos, I will cry real tears. So far, the only thing that has made me cry is when something bad happens to the wolves. Grey Wind and Lady. But if anything happens to Davos, I will be inconsolable.

Yeah, Ramsey is just about done having his father dangle the carrot in front of him. For a while, his sadistic nature battled with his need to win his father’s approval. But now I think he realizes he will never measure up in his father’s eyes.

    • Rose says:

Jenna: About Melisandre. I don’t remember her saying she was too week to have another smoke baby. Now I’m curious if that’s why we saw that sad final scene of her. Will she die if she brings Jon Snow back? Good question!

  12. Talie says:

I feel Sansa has had the most realistic evolution of any character…even if it was slower than people would hope for. But now she seems set to be The Lady in charge up in the north.

    • tracking says:

Yes, fantastic character arc and wonderful to see her coming into her own. The foursome is the best thing so far, imo. Adore Brienne of Tarth.

      • mary s says:

Yes! Seeing the character from the first episode, where all she wanted was to be queen to last night. I’m so excited to see her continue to evolve!

  13. Jen43 says:

I enjoyed the show so much last night. I am almost liking Theon. I loved that Brieene
and Pod saved them. Finally, Sansa has some help.

Ramsey is so creepy, but I love the sparkle in the eye of the actor who plays him. Whenever he is on screen, I am reminded of the Beatles. He kind of looks like George.

My assumption is that Melisandra’s choker is going to bring Jon Snow back. Also, whatever potion she had in that vile of hers.

The Dorne storyline is kind of boring to me. I wonder if that is the end of it.

It was so good to see all the characters, but I want more, more, more. One hour wasn’t enough.

    • Tash says:

“My assumption is that Melisandra’s choker is going to bring Jon Snow back.” Imagine Jon Snow strutting around the Wall, killing white walkers, etc. all the while wearing the choker in order to stay alive…LOL!

    • BunnyBabe says:

Yes! I have almost completely changed my mind about Theon! First, being willing to sacrifice himself for Sansa. Then saving Pod!

In November I got a French Bulldog and named him Podrick. I was sitting on the.edge.of.my.seat!! Like noooo don’t kill Pod!!! I would have been so sad.

You can follow my pup on IG @podricktheblue 💙

      • mayamae says:

I have a kitten named Arya. She’s crazy hyper and destructive, and I realized I should have named her Sansa instead.

      • ArtHistorian says:

ShowPod is adorbable. I’m kind of shipping him with Sansa. After all she’s been through, she deserves someone decent who can please a women in the bed.

    • isabelle says:

She has matured the most. The girl has survived living with two Psychopaths. She psychologically is probably stronger than most of the characters. A steal spine at this point. Bet when an army gathers around her she will be relentless, tactile, non-emotional, and more sensible than Dany. Can’t wait to see her as a leader.

      • mayamae says:

Sansa seems to have a lot of haters because she’s nothing like Arya. People like to say that Sansa would never have survived what Arya went through. But they miss the fact that the opposite it true as well. Arya would never have been able to play meek, call Ned a traitor, or marry strangers who then make you a political hostage. Arya would have killed and then been killed long ago.

  14. Nona says:

Ghost doesn’t think Jon Snow is dead. He kept nudging his hand, trying to wake him up. If Ghost thinks there’s hope, so do I. I trust the wolf.

    • mia girl says:

In the immortal words of Miracle Max:
“It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive.”

      • Rachel says:

I hope they have some chocolate to coat the miracle pill.

      • mayamae says:

But the cause is true love. Who’s Jon’s true love? Ghost?

      • mia girl says:

        Rachel – yes!~

mayamae – Well in TPB the reason to live was “true love” (aka “to blathe” ha ha). In GOT it would also be a noble cause – to lead, to free, to get vengeance!

  15. Jenns says:

Was there something going on with Jon’s blood in the snow? It almost looked like it was ash. Even Davos was giving it the side-eye.

    • Abbott says:

I’m waiting for Reddit to CSI that blood stain at the crime scene.

    • mia girl says:

Yes it did almost look like ash or definitely darker. Could it have to do with Jon coming from the blood of the dragon?

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I thought from the earliest camera angles it was the shape of an ascending DRAGON!!!!!!!!!
Isn’t his Targaryean (?sp) lineage widely rumored?

    • Pamela says:

I wondered that too. They showed it, then they showed Davos looking at it like there was something worth looking at, but I couldn’t tell what was so special. But yes, there was black sootiness to it– like ash.

    • Becks says:

Omg, I noticed the blood too. It definitely was kind of ashy, and I swear I thought I saw the shape of a dragon. I saw the episode twice!
Davos looked at it strangely, and did a double take. I think it will be a couple of episodes until they bring Jon back.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Could be. After all, Dany was sooty after her fire “re-birth”. It could be a similar situation for Jon.

  16. Lucky says:

Unpopular opinion but I dislike Arya’s story. A lot (I hate it in the books too). Was surprised at the stuff in Dorne, I hope they don’t spend much time there, it’s a snoozefest. I guess I’m happiest when they are concentrating on the North, especially The Wall. Jon Snow lives!

    • mia girl says:

Arya’s story bores me so much. It just seems to go on and on. Yawn…

      • tracking says:

Agree, even though I loved her character before this dumb plot.

      • hogtowngooner says:

I agree. She wandered around with various people from Seasons 2-5 until settling in Bradvos! It got so boring, and she’s a cool character and Maisie Williams is really good. I can only hope it’s leading something good, otherwise it sticks out like a sore thumb.

  17. baloney1 says:

    *Prince Doran *Myrcella *Ramsay

  18. Abbott says:

I know I’m the lone Theon fan here, but he was such a baller last night. And his hair game is so underrated.

    Few questions:
Will Cersei and Margaery call a truce to take out Dorne?
So both the Wildlings and the Boltons are heading to Castle Black?
Where will Brienne take Sansa? To The Wall or Riverrun?
Who is the person in charge of the Sons of Harpy that Tyrion and Varys alluded to? It has to be someone we already know…
Roose has to know that his psycho son has it out for Walda? And just when we see a bit of humanity in Ramsay, he decides to feed his lover to the dogs.

    Davos is everything.

    • Jenns says:

I really liked Theon last night. I hope this is the beginning of him redeeming himself.

    • Betti says:

Re: the Sons of Harpy – from memory in the books its hinted at being a character we know and someone, who i think, is or has been close to her.

      • lilacflowers says:

For the show, I’m suspecting Littlefinger. Cersei never paid attention to Robert’s rantings or Tywin’s concern about Dany; Doran was a Targaryen supporter; the Queen of Thorns is a possibility if she has the foresight but more likely she’s too focused on the Lannisters and getting Margaery and Loras out of the clunches of the Sparrows. Stannis isn’t funding anyone now. That leaves Littlefinger.

      • Betti says:

@Lilac. Interesting theory, as the leader is trying to keep her from returning to Westeros and i think the attack at the end of last season was aim at capturing her. I don’t think they intend to kill her, just create problems to keep her where she is.

I think we will be shocked at who it is – saying that it could a new character i.e. her nephew from the books who survived being murdered by the Mountain after he was switched at birth.

      • Chaucer says:

Re: sons of the harpy, it’s totally Daario, right? He’s sketchy as hell, and he’s just a sell sword. It might not have started as him, but he’s definitely the leader now.

    • mayamae says:

I really like Theon, too. It helps that I started watching in season four, so I initially missed the dastardly deeds of Theon and Jaime. Once I liked them I was forgiving of their back stories.

Here’s my question – We know the importance of preserving Jon’s body, but what’s motivating Davos? As far as the others know, Jon needs to be burned ASAP before he turns. Yet they hold up and are willing to die to protect a dead body. Why?

      • Jenns says:

Davos is a man who stands by what he thinks is right and just. He believed Stannis was the one true king of Westros, which is why he stood by his side even after being mutilated by him and watching him burn people all over Westros.

I think Davos believes in the vows Night’s Watch and Jon Snow is their leader. And killing their leader is wrong. So being that he is a just man, he is standing by Jon Snow.

      • mayamae says:

I get that, but what is the goal of keeping the body? If Thorne wanted to desecrate it they would have done it when they killed him. Obviously most of us know why, but what is the thinking of Davos and Jon’s friends? They know he will turn any minute.

      • Jenns says:

Once they took the body inside, they were stuck. They know if they open that door, they are dead men. I think they are just waiting for the wildlings at this point and hoping for the best.

And it is interesting that the body hasn’t turned yet.

      • mia girl says:

Re: body hasn’t turned yet, see the quote I posted up thread. He’s dead, but only mostly. The weird blood in the snow must be some kind of clue.

      • mayamae says:

@mia girl – But Davos and Jon’s friends don’t seem to think it’s strange that Jon hasn’t turned yet. Davos didn’t seem to think Melisandre would be able to do anything when she saw Jon. He commented on Mel, but it seemed in reference to possibly helping them protect Jon’s body. I find the sentiment beautiful and moving, but don’t get why they’re willing to die for what they think is a corpse. Of course most of the audience believes Jon will somehow be resurrected, but I get no impression that those guarding him think that’s even a chance. It’s counterintuitive to what they know happens to the dead at the wall.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I might posit that the SotH manipulator is Little Finger. He is so damn devious and EVERYWHERE.

    • JustCrimmles says:

I find myself a Theon fan, too. He’s made bad choices, he’s been manipulated. But he saved Sansa, and now they have Brienne and Pod, can’t wait to see how this goes. I yelled “POD!!!!” at the tv when he showed up.

I’m excited for Bran’s return. Annoyed with the sand snakes and their useless thirst for war. Theorizing that maybe Cersei and Margaery will grudgingly team up (a long shot, but I kind of want to see that.) More direwolves! DW4EVA. So many interesting, plausible theories everywhere.

This must have been how my dad felt every time he watched the Saints or Raiders playing. Especially the Saints. Lots of yelling at the tv. 😂

  19. Zeinab_M says:

I just can’t get with the Game of Thrones hysteria, much as I’ve tried. It just rubs me up the wrong way. All I get from it was, this is a hell of a lot of awful storytelling, neck-beard fanboy pandering and overt white supremacy bullshit (poor white, blue-eyed blonde princess in the land of the savages, but look! She speaks their ignoble tongue! Enigmatic sorceress! etc.) and a side helping of misogyny-lite. I just don’t get it. At all. I’m probably not the audience for it, though.

Also EL James is an awful writer and, rightfully, gets dragged for it. George R.R. Martin is equally awful (i’ve read one of those books a few years ago, once again, to try and catch this cultural fever) yet doesn’t get dragged for his equally terrible sex scenes and purple prose. About time he should be, imho.

    • Jay says:

Are you really comparing the writing in 50 Shades to the writing in A Song of Ice and Fire? It’s fine to not like the writing, but come ON.

    • Jenns says:

Yeah. I get not liking the show or the story. But in no way can you compare EL James to GRRM. That’s batsh*t crazy.

      • Whatwhatnot says:

Just. NO. There is no comparison to EL James and GRRM. I see people complain about the lack of ethnic characters and I’m like, I guess you haven’t watched the show? Xaro Xhoan Daxos , Khal Drogo, Grey Worm, Missandei, Oberyn, Doran Martell and the Dornish who are supposed to theoretically be the GoT version of Latin Americans, as well as the Yunquai and Mereenese who are supposed to be the GoT version of the Middle East. I see a lot of ethnic faces on the show.
In reference to the misogyny, it is what it is. It runs rampant around the world even in today’s age. But we get strong kick ass women like Brienne, Arya, Catelyn, Dany, even Cersei wields her power even if it’s misguided, to combat the misogyny.. Cersei even makes mention of being a woman in that world and how she has to be smarter than the men to stay one step ahead. But I’m just a show apologist so what do I know lol

      • Whatwhatnot says:

Sorry Jenns, I hit the wrong reply button. That was intended for Zainab.

    • drnotknowitall says:

Sorry to say this, but once you compared it to 50 Shades, I lost all interest in trying to explain why it is indeed very good.

  20. Sayrah says:

It was good but my goodness there were so many story lines going it felt like we barely got anywhere. But when I think about it, a lot happened, what am I complaining about?

I love brienne. Thanks pp but I didn’t even think about how her sword is really Ned’s sword remade. How touching that he is somehow protecting her again.

  21. Gardenia says:

Several names are misspelled in this post. It’s Prince Doran, Myrcella, Jaime, Ramsay.

As for the episode, it was probably my least favorite premiere ep. Everything about Dorne is just awful. I can’t stand the Sand Snakes. And has Ellaria hit her head on the journey back from King’s Landing? Oberyn volunteered for the fight against The Mountain. The Lannisters DID NOT murder him. There’s nothing to avenge. But yeah, go ahead and kill Oberyn’s brother and nephew. I’m sure it’s what he would have wanted.

And Tyrion’s line to Varys made me cringe (you’re not a boy anymore, ’cause you don’t have a c*ck). The total lack of subtlety has me worried. I hope it’s not a preview of things to come.

    • Pamela says:

“And has Ellaria hit her head on the journey back from King’s Landing? Oberyn volunteered for the fight against The Mountain. The Lannisters DID NOT murder him. There’s nothing to avenge. But yeah, go ahead and kill Oberyn’s brother and nephew. I’m sure it’s what he would have wanted.”

Agree 100%. I have trouble following the plot on the show sometimes, (I haven’t read the books). So when something doesn’t make perfect sense to me, I always assume there is something I missed. But even *I* caught that part about Oberyn not having been murdered, so much as he lost a fight he volunteered for.

    • Jen43 says:

Yes, but their sister Elia and her two children were killed by the Mountain when Tywin Lannister took King’s Landing. So there is a lot of hatred for the Lannisters.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

      • wrinkled says:

Yeah, for the Martells it’s been injustice after injustice with no recourse. Everyone has waged war in this world, it’s their turn now.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Wrinkled, but all that is left of them now are Oberyn’s illegitimate daughters. Ellaria isn’t even a Martell.

      • Linn says:

True, but considering that Ellaria just murdered Oberyn’s beloved brother and nephew, I somehow doubt she gave a sh*t about his sister and her children.

Oberyn is turning in his grave.

House Martell is my favorite in the books, but they have ruined everything about it last season. The only thing I still liked was Doran, but it was obvious he had to die fast, because thats what happens to nice, decent people living in that universe.

I loved Sansa, Brienne/Pod as well as Davos and Melissandre this episode and I’m interest to see when Dany get’s out of her current position.
Arya on the other hand doesn’t hold my attention that much since she’s in Braavos.

    • Olenna says:

Ditto about the Sand Snakes. Terrible writing for their roles (not to mention they can’t act), the whole Dorne piece is even more uninteresting watching it than it was reading it.

  22. lizzie says:

Carice Van Houten is so beautiful!

  23. Diana B says:

It was too short damn it! At the end I was like, it’s already been an hour???? I need MOAR! Dis you guys see the satisfaction on Brienne’s face when Sansa finally accepted her pledge? My god, that woman finally has purpose in her life again. I really hope Sansa gets better this season so I can hate her a little less. And Ramsey better get his because he’s really getting on my nerves. I too missed Bran and kept hoping for something to happen with Jon. I mean, they can’t keep him dead right. I was shocked the red woman was old af, I guess not all of us knew about it.

  24. Size Does Matter says:

The writing felt very different last night. Not in a bad way. Just different from GRRM. I guess because they’ve moved past the books.

  25. Zut alors! says:

So Sansa now knows Bran and Rickon are still alive and next week, she’ll find out that Arya is as well. She thinks Jon Snow is at Castle Black. Do you think that’s where she’ll be headed?

    • Jenns says:

Possibly. Going by the previews, it does appear that she and Davos meet up sometimes during the season. If she doesn’t head for the wall, she could go to one of the other houses in the North.

I really want to see some Starks reunite this season. They’ve been split since season 1.

      • mayamae says:

Liam Cunningham has been talking a lot about Sansa and praising Sophie, so many are guessing their characters interact quite heavily this season.

    • Whatwhatnot says:

From what Ramsey mentioned about going to Castle Black to attack, it seems they may all be headed that way. I hope they meet the Wildlings and a resurrected Jon Snow, hand Ramsey his ass and then march on to take back Winterfell from Roose!

    • hogtowngooner says:

Isn’t that where Theon told her to go (right before Brienne and Pod showed up)?

  26. familard says:

Dornish story is to bring a usurper to to Westeros but it has been boring as-F. Glad to have the Dothraki back, now with sense of humor.

  27. QQ says:

IDK yall This shizz seems to me like this season women are gonna step in in all this power Vacuum and go Toe to Toe be it by Proxy/scheming/physically in some cases and i for one am TOTALLY HERE FOR IT!

The YELP i let out when I could see Melisandre’s Reflection Change Before they showed her I was like JESUS JESUS!!, It makes more sense she wouldn’t care about Shireen like that or killing randos, this one has seen a Lot, I also wonder if she is gonna give the magic necklace to Davos for Jon or what!!?!? She is Vulnerable at the moment!!!

Also a quick cc: to Nicotero, we did about 5-6 different plots in SEVERAL countries here, and we didn’t have to wait til the end of the season to figure where was Jon Snow etc, so Like don’t compare these super different things in span and quality again , Kind Sir

    • Rachel says:

My husband yelped too. Then he started yelling “Don’t pull back any farther, don’t pull back any farther!” I told him to get used to it. That’ll be me in another 30 years.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Ha!!! I said nearly the same to my husband.
His trolly retort? “That’s sexy.” A big eye roll with a laugh was all I could do.

  28. Eve says:

Somewhere out there Nicole Kidman is desperately trying to find that necklace (before Madonna — who quite possibly already has one but bought in the black market, made from shoddy material).

  29. Amelie says:

I really do not care about the Dorne storyline. I don’t mind when the show diverges from the book but they messed it up so badly last season that I do not care about Ellaria’a quest for vengeance. The Martells were the only people I cared about in Dorne and now they are all dead. I don’t care about the Sand Snakes or Ellaria. So I guess this season’s big storyline is Dorne waging war against King’s Landing and the Lannisters?

Everything else was good though apart from Dorne. And Jon Snow really is dead. He died at the end of the last book. And I don’t think he gets resurrected by Melisandre, her magic does have its limits.

  30. BunnyBabe says:

Omg this episode was epic!! Hodor! And it reminded me of a thought I had the other day… Are Lifestyle Blogs the Vaes Dothrak of the acting world?

And small note about spelling: it’s Princess Myrcella not Marcella.

  31. Eve says:

And somebody — ANYONE — please kill that Bolton kid. I find annoying that he has one psycopathic expression: chin down, eyes up. I’d rather see him being killed by Theon Greyjoy’s badass sister but, at this point, anyone would do.

It made perfect sense that he gave his lover to feed the dogs. She failed at her only job, didn’t she? Seriously, were any of you expecting that little sh*t to have any positive feelings? Even his father shows some fear when he’s in his presence.

Upside: recycling. I mean, if you kill someone or find said person killed, you might as well feed her to the dogs. No burial, no remains, nothing to clean. Who knew Ramsay Bolton was so ahead of his time!?!!!

  32. The Original G says:

I’m on Emitations right now securing myself a ruby choker and I am NOT ever taking it off, even to sleep…..

  33. JustCrimmles says:

I think we all knew vagina shadow fighters came at a high price, but who knew how high?!

    • Susan says:

Her age is not actually a “price” she has paid. In fact, it’s sort of a gift. She has managed to live for hundreds and hundreds of years. She didn’t age fast because she did magic. It’s just that her magic has allowed her to hide her true age and looks from others.

      • JustCrimmles says:

I was only trying to be silly 😉 re: Melisandre.

Great points about the Done plot. I liked the sand snakes when they first showed up, but now they just seem violent for the sake of violence, or trying to show how bad ass they are. They’re just being stupid, because there is no way Cersei won’t retaliate the second she is able.

  34. Susan says:

    A couple of things:

–Margaery is in prison by the Faith for perjury. She was manipulated into testifying that she had absolutely no idea that her brother was gay and then Cersei/High Sparrow trotted in that Olyvar prostitute guy to tell about that time that Margaery found Loras and Olyvar in bed together.
–I agree 100% about Cersei. I get that the producers love Lena Headey (I think she’s great) and actors want to put “depth” into their characters. But that doesn’t mean we need to make Cersei likeable or sympathetic. It’s totally okay to have female characters that are weak or evil, because people are like that in real life. No one has problems when there are evil male characters and there is no reason we need to redeem Cersei. GRRM makes her a volatile, weak and evil character in the books who messes everything up in Kings Landing and boozes and goes crazy, and that’s great!
–I fully expect never to see Gendry again. He served his purpose of providing king’s blood to demonstrate Melisandre’s powers to the viewers and there really is no more storyline about rightful heirs to the various five kings, that’s played out. As for Rickon though, I think he might return this year (if a spoiler I read about a later episode is true, it will be *very* interesting too).
–I absolutely loathed the Dorne storyline. The plot rationale and writing were both atrocious. Ellaria and the Sand Snakes are supposedly avenging Oberyn who LOVED his family. He went to King’s Landing to avenge the death of his sister Elia and his niece/nephew. And Ellaria and her daughters think the way to avenge him is to kill MORE of his family??? Plus, they are committing kinslaying, probably the most serious crime in Westeros, because Doran is the uncle of the Sand Snakes and Trystane is their cousin. And what exactly is the justification for this? It all seems very weak and completely unbelievable that his personal guard would all turn a blind eye. And don’t get me started on the corny and cringeworthy dialogue, especially the line about being a “greedy bitch” after Trystane was killed. It’s all jokey and stupid and as bad as that dumb “bad pussy” line last year.
–The Wall plot is a small let down after all this waiting although it was very atmospheric and emotional. Basically, not much progressed on that front except the big reveal of Melisandre’s true form. Yes she is an old woman and has always been but they never really revealed that in the show so it should be a surprise for most (Carice van Houten let things slip mistakenly in her first couple of interviews though and book readers have long suspected). And people are confused that she is somehow giving up her youth. She is not young, she has always been this old since the show began. It’s just her magic (which is bound up into the ruby) has given the illusion that she is young..it’s just what other people see. Her crisis of faith is just being laid out for now..notice she suddenly feels the cold because she has to wear cloaks outdoors and get under the warm blanket? But I agree 100% that she will be bounce back.

    • mayamae says:

I think I’ve read the same spoiler regarding Rickon.

The Sand Snakes and Ellaria would be a little more interesting if they were blinded by vengeance. Instead, they’re showing off their boobs, and high-fiving each other after killing their uncle and cousin. They’re cardboard villains, and I don’t believe for a moment that these girls came from Oberyn. All of Dorne is now tainted in my eyes.

I agree on Melisandre. She’s having a temporary crisis of faith, and I’d like to think Shireen’s screams are echoing in her head.

  35. Magnoliarose says:

I loved it am waiting for more. Now that the show is beyond the books now it should be interesting. I read the books and now have no idea where it is headed.
I think Melissandre will have a hand in bringing Jon back because of the connection between fire, dragons and the Targaryen blood. Well we will see.

  36. Andrea says:

Am I the only one wondering where is Bronn (and he is oddly hot too!)?

    • lilacflowers says:

They try to avoid scenes between Cersei and Bronn. The actors have a history together and it didn’t end well.
