Megan Fox: ‘I’m not trying to take Cate Blanchett down’

Megan Fox was just named the runner-up of Maxim’s Sexiest Woman for 2009. She was Maxim’s 2008 Sexiest, so she sort of got dethroned. But the fanboys still love her. She’s got the Transformers sequel coming out soon, and so we’re going to be hearing a lot more about her in the coming months. Megan doesn’t really give the best interviews - it’s like she’s trying to be shocking, but she comes across as vapid. Maybe it’s just me.

Anyway, Megan gave an interview to USA Today (story via The Press Association) about working with Shia LeBeouf, and struggling to be a better actress. The Shia stuff is a little boring, because she’s trying to convince us that she’s not into Shia at all. Which she may not be, but it always helps to pretend. Plus, Shia is really cute, and her real boyfriend Brian Austin “David Silver” Green isn’t. The only good part of the interview is when Megan comes out with this line about her acting: “I mean, I’m not trying to take Cate Blanchett down. I just want to improve.” Yes, honey. You’re definitely not trying to take Blanchett down.

Megan Fox admits she felt a bit strange doing love scenes with co-star Shia Lebeouf in the forthcoming Transformers sequel.

“It’s always weird,” she told USA Today.

“That’s not something that’s ever romantic or sexy. Doing an on-set kiss is just strange, and knowing Shia so well makes it even more strange.”

Megan reprises her role as Mikaela Banes in Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen, out this June. But she is keen to take on more dramatic roles in the future.

“I’d like to develop my skills to where I can be recognised as a good actress,” she said.

“That’s my end goal. It has nothing to do with the box office. It’s about peer recognition and critical acclaim, even on a small level. I mean, I’m not trying to take Cate Blanchett down. I just want to improve.”

So will Megan Fox improve as an actress? She might. She’s still young, she’s getting more notice and better work, and she’s one of the few young actresses who has managed to keep the interest of the fickle fanboys for several years. Unlike, say, a Jessica Alba. In addition to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Megan got the lead role in Jennifer’s Body, Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody’s follow-up to Juno. Megan’s also got another four or five films in development, so we’ll be seeing the Anti-Blanchett a lot more in the years ahead.

  1. Trashy (Diablo Cody) meet Trashier (Megan Fox). What a meeting of the, ahem, minds.

    Because I Say So:

She’s talentless like the afore-mentioned Alba. If I hear her say she doesn’t use her body or sex to sell a movie, I think my head will explode

  7. I really like her nose. I think she has had some very subtle plastic surgery and did it right. She’s gorgeous.
At least she knows where she stands.

  8. I was watching Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen the other night, and Megan Fox looks NOTHING like she did in that movie… which was, what, 4 years ago?

I don’t think she’s that great of an actress but whatever. She’s faux-hot, so I guess that’s what matters.

Not that I am a fan of this lady, but it’s pretty clear to me based on her comments that she knows she isn’t THAT fantastic of an actress, she knows that Cate IS and she is saying she is aware that she isn’t in the same league.

Although I gotta say, I AM getting tired of hearing her knock on herself, too. Confidence is a lot sexier.

  13. I’m with you jess. I don’t get the fuss over Shia. He’s kind of creepy and arrogant. Brian AG has more manly appeal, a little rougher around the edges is fine by me.

  15. I’ve got the hots for Shia. Nice little ‘bad boy’ mixed with some emotions. We all know it’s true :P

I actually kind of like Megan but at the same time she doesn’t need to bash herself as it seems rather dull and annoying. Can’t wait for the new Transformers movie though.

  16. Yea, the self-deprecating schtick is getting old.

But at least she’s not delusional enough to think she’s a good actor.

    Persistent Cat:

I think this might be her first interview where she didn’t allude to a bisexual past or how she likes to have sex all the time or some other nonsense that gets plastered everywhere.

  18. She’s had major work on breasts, hips, thighs, tummy, nose, and she wears colored contacts. Beat off to that.

  20. I like Megan, I think she’s adorable. And its still early in her career, her acting can always get better.
Shia is a great actor..but Brian is hotter..sorry..hehe

  21. Please, Fox is in about the same place in her career as Alba was in 2005/6, and Alba hasn’t lost the fanboys at all. And sadly, like Alba, Fox has gotten herself slotted into the “sexy not good acting” space so now we can already see people tearing her down, diminishing her, taking her out of context. I feel sorry for Fox, I hope she knows what’s she in for as the sexy girl. (There is, of course, no worries for anyone about being slotted into the sexy boy space - boys can be bad at acting and no one gives a crap.)

  22. Not trying to take Cate Blanchett down? You are not a good enough actor to even use your name in the same sentence with hers honey.

Totally agree. I know people - especially women, of course - like to tear her down, but she’s a) acknowledging how talented Blanchett is, & b) saying she knows she is nowhere near that league. She is in NO way saying “One day I could be like Cate Blanchett!” Lot of knee jerk reactions going on here ;) I never liked her before, but I’m starting to feel for her because of all the (mostly) unfounded criticisms (though the “pie” comment prevents me from ever actually being able to LIKE her LOL)

P.S. I am a huuuuuuuuuuuge Cate Blanchett fan, so if I thought there was need I’d TOTALLY defend her honour…LOL ;)

  24. In like that she knows she’s not so good and wants to work on that, I also like that she seems to have chosen a good role model in Cate. I admit I haven’t actually seen her act, but she hangs on the wall over my eldest son’s bed, and has done for quite a while.

Oh, like she has a hope in hell of treading the same movie lot with Kate let alone the same movie set.

  26. This is unusual honesty for a successful actress. I’m actually impressed that she is not so narcissistic that she doesn’t know that she needs to keep working on her art.

  27. People are being way too harsh to this. The acknowledges she’s not too good, she’s not comparing herself to cate. This is a clear cut case of people being haters.
At least she wants to improve, and see’s she has improvements to make, unlike Jessica Alba who thinks she is good, but some kind of external force is holding her back.
I think it’s very humble what she said, good on her.

She is so beautiful - like, drop dead gorgeous. But that is pretty much thanks to some very nice surgeries she has had, which have all been done to a really high standard.

Also, I’m not really interested in anything she has to say or watching her in any films. I like what she wears a lot of the time and that’s about where my interest ends. That and envying her fab body!
